The ability to deliver compelling presentations is increasingly important. Which tool you use to create, share and present your work may depend on a range of factors:

  • individual or group work — different tools offer collaborative functionality.
  • basic or advanced function — if you wish to incorporate complex data visualisations, or include special effects you may require a more advanced presentation tool.
  • availability of training — the availability of in-person training and online help varies between presentation tools.

UQ Masterbrand - what it means for SMI

The new UQ Brand officially rolled out on 1 October. The Vice-Chancellor flagged the coming changes and the reasoning in July (see this video for further explanation).

A master UQ brand ensures that everything done in the name of The University of Queensland supports and builds its reputation, and aligns to the One UQ principle. As the Institute is part of UQ, it's important we embrace the changes.

Key elements of the new brand are:

  • A simplified and modernised UQ logo, which sits separate from school, faculty and Institute names
  • A graphic device inspired by our coat of arms and the letter Q which will help build a visually recognisable identity for UQ
  • A revised colour palette - purple remains our primary colour, but is a slightly different purple

Detailed  brand guidelines  have been produced and a  suite of templates  can now been downloaded. Additional templates will be added in due course.

Changes for the Sustainable Minerals Institute:

  • SMI and its Centres will no longer have separate logos or colour palettes
  • The new UQ logo is to be used on all correspondence along with the correct colour palette
  • Only use two entity names in the badging of promotional materials – one of them must always be UQ. For presentations/ reports academics can include  centre affiliation along with name and title (if you wish to use the centre affiliation on branding please liaise with your centre director)
  • Acronyms are not to be used in headings – the institute and centre names need to be written in full in the first instance, the abbreviation may be used subsequently in text
  • All new promotional material needs to be approved by OMC until the new branding is bedded in. If you require brochures / flyers etc please let us know
  • Current branded materials such as pull up banners, signage, corporate gifts, conference giveaways will be phased out over time, there is no need to throw everything out immediately. Any new materials being ordered should follow the new guidelines

Action required

  • Update  email signatures using the email signature template .
  • Ensure  the new PowerPoint template is used for public presentations. Keynote templates are not yet available.
  • Use updated meeting agenda templates, reports and letterheads .
  • New business cards should be available very soon.

3MT competitor guide

Even the world’s best public speakers prepare before important presentations. To assist you with your preparations, please find a few suggestions below that will help you in writing your presentation, creating your slide and practising your presentation.

  • 3MT drafting
  • 3MT presentation
  • Examples of 3MT presentations

Write for your audience

  • Avoid jargon and academic language.
  • Explain concepts and people important to your research - you may know all about Professor Smith’s theories but your audience may not.
  • Highlight the outcomes of your research, and the desired outcome.
  • Imagine that you are explaining your research to a close friend or fellow student from another field.
  • Convey your excitement and enthusiasm for your subject.

Tell a story

  • You may like to present your 3MT as a narrative, with a beginning, middle and end.
  • It’s not easy to condense your research into three minutes, so you may find it easier to break your presentation down into smaller sections.
  • Try writing an opener to catch the attention of the audience, then highlight your different points, and finally have a summary to restate the importance of your work.

Have a clear outcome in mind

  • Know what you want your audience to take away from your presentation.
  • Try to leave the audience with an understanding of what you’re doing, why it is important, and what you hope to achieve.
  • Proof your 3MT presentation by reading it aloud, to yourself and to an audience of friends and family.
  • Ask for feedback.
  • Ask your audience if your presentation clearly highlights what your research is about and why it is important.

Before you start work on your slide, you should take the following rules into account:

  • One single static PowerPoint slide is permitted;
  • No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description are permitted;
  • Your slide is to be presented from the beginning of your oration; and
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.

Suggestions

You may like to consider some of the following suggestions.

  • Less is more: text and complicated graphics can distract your audience – you don’t want them to read your slide instead of listening to your 3MT.
  • Personal touches: personal touches can allow your audience to understand the impact of your research.
  • Creativity drives interest: do not rely on your slide to convey your message – it should simply complement your oration.
  • Work your message: think about how your slide might be able to assist with the format and delivery of your presentation – is there a metaphor that helps explain your research?
  • An engaging visual presentation can make or break any oration, so make sure your slide is  legible, clear and concise .

Practice, practice, practice

  • Feeling nervous before you present is natural, and a little nervousness can even be beneficial to your overall speech. Nonetheless, it is important to practice so you can present with confidence and clarity. Practicing will also help you gauge the timing of your 3MT so that you keep within the time limit.

Vocal range

  • Speak clearly and use variety in your voice (fast/slow, loud/ soft).
  • Do not rush – find your rhythm.
  • Remember to pause at key points as it gives the audience time to think about what you are saying.

Body language

  • Stand straight and confidently.
  • Hold your head up and make eye contact.
  • Never turn your back to the audience.
  • Practise how you will use your hands and move around the stage. It is okay to move around energetically if that is your personality, however it is also appropriate for a 3MT presentation to be delivered from a single spot on stage.
  • Do not make the common mistakes of rolling back and forth on your heels, pacing for no reason or playing with your hair as these habits are distracting for the audience.

Record yourself

  • Record and listen to your presentation to hear where you pause, speak too quickly or get it just right.
  • Then work on your weaknesses and exploit your strengths.

Look to the stars!

  • Watch your role models such as academics, politicians and journalists, and break down their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Analyse how they engage with their audience.
  • View presentations by previous 3MT finalists .
  • There is no dress code, if you are unsure of how to dress you may like to dress for a job interview or an important meeting. It is important that you feel comfortable so you can focus on your presentation.
  • If you are presenting on a stage that has a wooden floor, be aware of the noise your footwear might make.
  • Do not wear a costume of any kind as this is against the rules (as is the use of props).

For ideas and inspiration on how to develop your own 3MT presentation, there are many examples of previous 3MT finalists from a broad range of disciplines on our website:

  • Writing your confirmation document
  • Information and services
  • Higher Degree by Research
  • HDR candidature support

Your confirmation document must be well-written and provide strong evidence that the outcome of your research is valuable to your field of study.

A successful confirmation document acts as a research proposal that convinces the University that you and your project are worth supporting.

For help with writing your confirmation document, read our general advice below or attend our Writing a confirmation document workshop .

What to include in your confirmation document

When writing your confirmation document, make sure you include the following:

  • a well thought out, explained and justified timeline and budget for your project
  • a list of skills you need to acquire to complete your research and how you will acquire them
  • the necessary ethical clearances if your research involves people or animals
  • a progress report of any results you’ve already achieved in your research (if applicable).

You'll also need to provide specific evidence that both you and your project are worth supporting.

Evidence that you're worth supporting

You should ensure that your confirmation document reflects your knowledge, diligence and dedication to your work. Start by including a high quality literature review that proves that you’re on top of the field and capable of pursuing your stated research goals. See our literature review guide for more information.

You should clearly review your research methods . It’s not enough to describe your proposed methods. You also need to justify and explain them. You need to prove that you’ve given your proposed approach careful thought.

Provide a well-written document . The quality of your work provides evidence that you have, or are well on the way to developing, written communication skills of a publishable standard. Since one of the expected outcomes of a research degree is the ability to communicate your work effectively, your communication skills will be assessed in your confirmation document and presentation.

Evidence that your project is worth supporting

Clearly outline your research hypothesis, questions and goals . While these should flow out of your literature review, you should also explicitly state them to make it clear what you're trying to achieve. Make sure your questions or goals aren’t too broad, vague or ambitious. It’s important to narrow your research topic down so you can pursue manageable and achievable goals.

Your document should explain and support your motivation for doing your research. This proves that you're doing something important, interesting and worthwhile. You may express this by explaining:

  • the size and costs of the problem you’re addressing
  • outlining any negative effects or a problem for a significant number of people
  • showing the cultural significance of your research
  • demonstrating disciplinary significance in terms of aiding progress in the field.

Provide convincing evidence that your project will make an original contribution to your research area. This is done by critically reviewing existing literature on your topic. Consider what is known and what can be improved. The gaps or problems you identify can provide a niche for you to make an original contribution.

UQ Marketing

Transcript: To understand me...You must know my history During my Junior year, I entered into the Marketing program, DECA: a Marketing Competition, National Honor Society, two more jobs as a Barista in the High School Coffee Shop and a concession worker at a local pumpkin farm and pursuing college courses in my High School. In DECA, Hospitality Service Management was my specialty which led me to receive 4th place in the district as a Junior. The Marketing program brought out my creative side by forcing me to step outside of my element and explore new talents that I have not discovered yet about myself. Senior year was an exciting and scary time for me. I was learning new things to prepare myself for college and not wanting to live outside of my comfort zone. DECA again was my passion so Hospitality Service was a primary focus. In 2009-2010, I was ranked 1st in my district, 2nd in the State and 7th in the Nation for Hospitality Service Management. This accomplishment alone was one that I will never forget and It has also helped lead me to my career paths. I excelled immensely in all of my goals when I neared graduation in National Honor Society with over 400 service hours, maintaining three jobs, DECA, Marketing, and graduating with Magna Cum Laude. Costa Rica. An Island full of Adventure So Where Am I now? Ohio State has given me opportunities that only some people have been provided. Going into my Sophomore year at Ohio State, I was given the opportunity to study abroad again in the beautiful country of Ecuador. For over three months, I explored every aspect the country has to offer while studying the language and culture of the area. Being thrown into a situation of uncertainty is some what of a culture shock. You do not realize how different every place is until you get the opportunity to experience it. Being out of my element, I thrived to learn and experience new cultures and customs of the country. I definitely found out more about myself that I ever knew. What the Future has in store for me.... As an incoming junior in High School, traveling and studying abroad was not a top priority, but given the opportunity I was able to explore new surroundings and adventures. At first I am a quiet and reserved person, but traveling abroad has brought me to a new "Maria" that thrives on new experiences. Costa Rica brought out my passion of traveling and interacting with new people. Back into the rest of High School... In High School, I was actively involved in every aspect that I could be. As a freshman, I joined Spirit Club, Spanish Club, coached cheer leading and participated in Musicals. Sophomore year came along and I kept up with the same activities but added in a Customer Service Representative and telemarketer position at Nationwide Insurance and also hosted a foreign exchange student from Costa Rica. My passion for Ohio State as you know is overwhelming. The deciding factor to choose Ohio State as my school was a no brainier. Yes, I passed up a full ride to The University of Akron, but it wasn't my dream, nor my passion. I did not love Akron U as much as I loved Ohio State all of these years. I even named my puppy after Ohio State; Sophia Scarlet. And my second will be named Brutus Greyson. I have explored and experienced as much as I can at Ohio State since I moved to Columbus. I try to attend new events and join new clubs as often as possible. Plus the Ohio State Buckeye Football season isn't too bad either. Like I said, I was born to be a buckeye. Ohio State has provided me with more opportunities than I can imagine. All About Maria Nagel Junior at The Ohio State University. 20 years old. Degree in Humanitarian Services and Liberal Arts. Pursuing a duel degree in International Studies: World Economy and Business and Hospitality Service Management. Pursuing minors in Entrepreneurship and Spanish. Bubbly, infectious personality. Outgoing and determined. Creative and Innovative. Thrives on out-of-box experiences. Loves traveling. Family comes first. Meeting new people is a goal everyday. Craving to expand my knowledge and understanding of the world around me. Moving on to my later years Senior Year: Where new beginnings start From the beginning... Being a UQ Marketing Virtual Intern would be great honor for me. Marketing is my passion so given the opportunity to be able to work for a company that their goals align with mine is a spectacular feeling. The Ohio State University holds a major part of my heart. I put my all into my school and my school work to become one of the greatest alumni status I have always dreamed of. I am passionate about my school and my profession that I will do anything possible to achieve my dreams. I would put as much passion into the internship as I do with everything else that involves Ohio State. My dedication and determination has helped me persevere through financial struggles and set backs in life. As an intern, I will push and expand the company name to as many college students that

How To Get Free Access To Microsoft PowerPoint

E very time you need to present an overview of a plan or a report to a whole room of people, chances are you turn to Microsoft PowerPoint. And who doesn't? It's popular for its wide array of features that make creating effective presentations a walk in the park. PowerPoint comes with a host of keyboard shortcuts for easy navigation, subtitles and video recordings for your audience's benefit, and a variety of transitions, animations, and designs for better engagement.

But with these nifty features comes a hefty price tag. At the moment, the personal plan — which includes other Office apps — is at $69.99 a year. This might be the most budget-friendly option, especially if you plan to use the other Microsoft Office apps, too. Unfortunately, you can't buy PowerPoint alone, but there are a few workarounds you can use to get access to PowerPoint at no cost to you at all.

Read more: The 20 Best Mac Apps That Will Improve Your Apple Experience

Method #1: Sign Up For A Free Microsoft Account On The Office Website

Microsoft offers a web-based version of PowerPoint completely free of charge to all users. Here's how you can access it:

  • Visit the Microsoft 365 page .
  • If you already have a free account with Microsoft, click Sign in. Otherwise, press "Sign up for the free version of Microsoft 365" to create a new account at no cost.
  • On the Office home page, select PowerPoint from the side panel on the left.
  • Click on "Blank presentation" to create your presentation from scratch, or pick your preferred free PowerPoint template from the options at the top (there's also a host of editable templates you can find on the Microsoft 365 Create site ).
  • Create your presentation as normal. Your edits will be saved automatically to your Microsoft OneDrive as long as you're connected to the internet.

It's important to keep in mind, though, that while you're free to use this web version of PowerPoint to create your slides and edit templates, there are certain features it doesn't have that you can find on the paid version. For instance, you can access only a handful of font styles and stock elements like images, videos, icons, and stickers. Designer is also available for use on up to three presentations per month only (it's unlimited for premium subscribers). When presenting, you won't find the Present Live and Always Use Subtitles options present in the paid plans. The biggest caveat of the free version is that it won't get any newly released features, unlike its premium counterparts.

Method #2: Install Microsoft 365 (Office) To Your Windows

Don't fancy working on your presentation in a browser? If you have a Windows computer with the Office 365 apps pre-installed or downloaded from a previous Office 365 trial, you can use the Microsoft 365 (Office) app instead. Unlike the individual Microsoft apps that you need to buy from the Microsoft Store, this one is free to download and use. Here's how to get free PowerPoint on the Microsoft 365 (Office) app:

  • Search for Microsoft 365 (Office) on the Microsoft Store app.
  • Install and open it.
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account. Alternatively, press "Create free account" if you don't have one yet.
  • Click on Create on the left side panel.
  • Select Presentation.
  • In the PowerPoint window that opens, log in using your account.
  • Press Accept on the "Free 5-day pass" section. This lets you use PowerPoint (and Word and Excel) for five days — free of charge and without having to input any payment information.
  • Create your presentation as usual. As you're using the desktop version, you can access the full features of PowerPoint, including the ability to present in Teams, export the presentation as a video file, translate the slides' content to a different language, and even work offline.

The only downside of this method is the time limit. Once the five days are up, you can no longer open the PowerPoint desktop app. However, all your files will still be accessible to you. If you saved them to OneDrive, you can continue editing them on the web app. If you saved them to your computer, you can upload them to OneDrive and edit them from there.

Method #3: Download The Microsoft PowerPoint App On Your Android Or iOS Device

If you're always on the move and need the flexibility of creating and editing presentations on your Android or iOS device, you'll be glad to know that PowerPoint is free and available for offline use on your mobile phones. But — of course, there's a but — you can only access the free version if your device is under 10.1 inches. Anything bigger than that requires a premium subscription. If your phone fits the bill, then follow these steps to get free PowerPoint on your device:

  • Install Microsoft PowerPoint from the App Store or Google Play Store .
  • Log in using your existing Microsoft email or enter a new email address to create one if you don't already have an account.
  • On the "Get Microsoft 365 Personal Plan" screen, press Skip For Now.
  • If you're offered a free trial, select Try later (or enjoy the free 30-day trial if you're interested).
  • To make a new presentation, tap the plus sign in the upper right corner.
  • Change the "Create in" option from OneDrive - Personal to a folder on your device. This allows you to save the presentation to your local storage and make offline edits.
  • Press "Set as default" to set your local folder as the default file storage location.
  • Choose your template from the selection or use a blank presentation.
  • Edit your presentation as needed.

Do note that PowerPoint mobile comes with some restrictions. There's no option to insert stock elements, change the slide size to a custom size, use the Designer feature, or display the presentation in Immersive Reader mode. However, you can use font styles considered premium on the web app.

Method #4: Use Your School Email Address

Office 365 Education is free for students and teachers, provided they have an email address from an eligible school. To check for your eligibility, here's what you need to do:

  • Go to the Office 365 Education page .
  • Type in your school email address in the empty text field.
  • Press "Get Started."
  • On the next screen, verify your eligibility. If you're eligible, you'll be asked to select whether you're a student or a teacher. If your school isn't recognized, however, you'll get a message telling you so.
  • For those who are eligible, proceed with creating your Office 365 Education account. Make sure your school email can receive external mail, as Microsoft will send you a verification code for your account.
  • Once you're done filling out the form, press "Start." This will open your Office 365 account page.

You can then start making your PowerPoint presentation using the web app. If your school's plan supports it, you can also install the Office 365 apps to your computer by clicking the "Install Office" button on your Office 365 account page and running the downloaded installation file. What sets the Office 365 Education account apart from the regular free account is that you have unlimited personal cloud storage and access to other Office apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
