With proper execution and a focus on customer satisfaction, you can run an eatery and thrive in the competitive market. However, starting and running a fast food restaurant requires careful planning, attention to detail, and dedication.

That said, the steps below will simplify everything you need to know to set up and profitably run a fast food restaurant business in Nigeria.

Carry out market research and analysis

When starting a fast food restaurant in Nigeria, conducting market research is the first step to take. Identify your target customers and what they like. Analyze the competition and find ways to stand out or ace the competition.

Research has shown that Tantalizers (a popular fast food chain in Nigeria) conduct market research to offer menu items that cater to local tastes. They understand that studying the competitive landscape gives them opportunities to set themselves apart. You should do the same to also single out your restaurant.

Moreover, careful market research and analysis can help you determine the ideal location for your eatery. Your chosen business location can greatly impact the success of your restaurant. Thus, market research helps you make informed decisions and create a unique fast-food experience for your target customers.

Develop a business plan

Developing a business plan is essential when starting a fast food restaurant in Nigeria. You need to define the vision, mission, and goals for your restaurant.

However, before preparing a plan for your business, you should conduct a feasibility study . It’s crucial and will help you determine if your venture is financially viable. For instance, Sweet Sensation , a successful fast-food chain in Nigeria, has a strong business plan. They conducted a feasibility study to expand their business and boom! They made it to the top.

Thus, it’s vital to create a comprehensive business plan that includes your concept, menu, pricing, and marketing strategy. By considering these aspects, you can align your restaurant’s offerings with customer expectations.

Address legal and regulatory considerations

No legal business exists on its own without a legal framework to back it up. Similarly, when starting a fast food restaurant in Nigeria, you must consider the legal and regulatory aspects.

First, you must register your business with the appropriate authorities and get the necessary licenses and permits to operate a food establishment. In Nigeria, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is the right place to start. After registering your name, you should also adhere to health and safety regulations/standards. Through this, you can maintain a safe environment for both customers and employees.

For example, Mr Bigg’s , a renowned fast food chain in Nigeria follows relevant regulations to ensure the quality and safety of their food. Likewise, you should learn about the legal obligations of your restaurant business and fulfil them. Only then can you create legally compliant fast-food restaurants that earn the public trust. To make things easier for you, you can seek the service of a legal practitioner(s).

Design the restaurant layout

This often goes hand in hand with finding a suitable location for your business. After finding a location that meets your target market’s needs, you want to give your restaurant a befitting design and layout. You should consider enough space as you plan for your restaurant’s physical facility which would include a kitchen, dining area, storage, and parking lot.

Consider the accessibility, visibility, and lease terms of your restaurant. Plan the interior layout of your fast food restaurant business including seating arrangements, kitchen space, and customer flow. Also, make sure your restaurant complies with health and safety regulations.

Setting up operations

Setting up effective and efficient operations is important when starting a fast food restaurant. Identify the necessary equipment, supplies, and ingredients for your restaurant. Establish relationships with reliable suppliers. Also, learn how to negotiate favourable terms to ensure a smooth supply chain.

For example, let’s consider Chicken Republic in Nigeria. They didn’t become a popular fast-food chain overnight. They’ve learned how to maintain strong partnerships with local suppliers for sourcing fresh ingredients. Hence, as part of your effort to set up operations for your fast food restaurant, consider human capital.

Train and assign qualified staff to tasks to ensure excellent customer service. That way, you can lay a solid foundation for a successful fast food restaurant.

Develop a perfect menu and pricing mechanism

If you are trying to start a fast food eatery in Nigeria, you should consider what your menus and pricing should be like. Make extensive research on menu development and pricing. Take your time to design a diverse menu that caters to the tastes and preferences of your target audience.

For instance, Domino’s Pizza in Nigeria offers a variety of pizza flavours tailored to local palates. They continue to source high-quality ingredients while keeping costs in mind to maintain profitability.

Determining competitive and profitable pricing strategies can help you attract customers while ensuring sustainable business growth. The bottom line is to carefully craft your menu and pricing effectively. Also, by offering delectable dishes to your customers, you can drive your fast-food business to success.

Map out engaging brand and marketing strategy

More often than not, you must have heard this popular phrase in business, “customer is king.” This is so true as no business can survive without customers. If you want to succeed in your journey to start and scale up your fast-food business in Nigeria, you must create an engaging brand and marketing strategy. For example, Tastee Fried Chicken has successfully established its brand as a reliable and tasty fast food option.

How did they achieve that? The answer is simple. They started by developing a unique brand identity that resonates with their target customers. Interestingly, that involves building an online presence through a website and active social media platforms to connect with customers and showcase their offerings.

You can make your fast food restaurant in Nigeria big by creating a strong brand and using smart marketing strategies. However, don’t forget that effective marketing strategies include online and offline advertising. The aim is to reach a wider audience.

Spell out how you want to settle your customers

As said earlier, it’s essential to have an effective and efficient operation to start a fast food restaurant in Nigeria. But beyond that, you want to be proactive in making your potential customers happy. To do this, there should be efficient ways to take orders, prepare food, and deliver it.

Take KFC in Nigeria for example, they work hard to quickly fulfil orders and make sure they’re delivered well. That’s because they understand that giving great customer service is a big deal too. Hence, create a mechanism for how you propose to listen to what your customers are saying to make things better. When you work efficiently and offer great service, you can build a good reputation and make lasting customer connections in Nigeria’s fast-food industry.

Plan financial management and sustainability

Setting up a strong financial management system is so vital when starting a fast-food cafeteria in Nigeria. That way, you can keep track of your income and expenses to understand how your business is doing. You can also manage costs and find ways to make more profit. For instance, brands like Sweet Sensation in Nigeria carefully manage costs to ensure profitability.

Make plans for the future by thinking about long-term sustainability and opportunities to grow your business. By spending wisely, you can run a fast-food restaurant successfully and set yourself up for future expansion.

Factors To Consider Before Setting Up Your Restaurant

Here are some of the factors most food entrepreneurs over look that makes them fail in the business venturing, carefully go through them and ensure you cross all your T’s and dots all your I’s; see below

Write A Business Plan – We’ve discussed why you need a food business plan sample PDF on this post, some of the things we said you needed to start up your restaurant business should be embedded in the business plan. A business plan helps the entrepreneur to plan for logistics , things that are required for the business to start, on the business plan your master plan on the services to be offered will as well be contained in it, It should as well have information on the number of works you should have and also have detailed description of staff uniforms and dress code, things menu, time of opening and closing business will as well be included etc.

Register Your Business Name – You must register your business name to be legally recognized, in fact when you register your business name, it becomes an infringement into your right if some other business uses the same name, in essence business registration protects your business from duplicates. In a city like Enugu where they have a whole lot of fast food joints and restaurant, I’ve never seen two fast food joint or two restaurant with the same name, for example you have the following just to mention a few (i) Open Sheraton (ii) Nta’Chi Osa (iii) Odi Oku… etc, all these fast food joints/ restaurant have their unique customers although they relatively have almost the same menu.

  • Administrative/ management sector
  • Their method of operation… etc

In fact, you are required to know every possible information about your competition in order to compete favorably. You can actually scout these restaurants yourself; this will enable you to have first hand information about them.

Location – Location in business can never be over emphasized, it is important that you carefully select the best spot for your business. Locating your business in the city center can be very strategic, people will get to know you restaurant easily, could be used in description. Other places where you can site your restaurant is at the Mall, serving continental as well as local dishes will make people consider your restaurant a top notch, setting up at the market place or around the market will definitely fetch you a large number of customers. You can take advantage of proper research before setting up.

Staff Employment – The implementation of your business plan is dependent on the capacity of staff you have employed, these days food venture has become a serious venture and some organisation tends to send their staff members to training, while other employ only those certified by an institution, there are institution where individuals are trained for hospitality business. Employing and subsequently training those individuals will greatly benefit your restaurant. In essence, you need qualified hands to handle the following;

How To Start Fast Food Restaurant Business In Nigeria

small fast food business plan in nigeria pdf

You will agree with me that the fast food restaurant business is one of the most lucrative businesses in any country. This is because, food is a necessity and at such no one can do without it. Fast food restaurant business have become very popular in Nigeria because of the quick nature of their services and varieties in food menu. A lot of local restaurants are upgrading to become fast food restaurants by the day.

Fast food restaurants, otherwise known as quick service restaurants (QSR) or eatery, are specific food outlets that specialize in the fast and efficient preparation of foods that are always ready for take out at an affordable price. They also provide seating arrangements for customers who want to eat their food in the restaurant.

Like the name implies, one of the benefits of fast food restaurants is that, it is fast and efficient. This means that people can get food on-the-go, without wasting time and the food can be packed and ready for takeout at any time. It is convenient and affordable. You don’t have to go through the stress of preparing your own meal if you don’t want to, all you need to do is locate the nearest fast food restaurant, and you can get varieties of food that you may not even be able to prepare by yourself at home.

People working at a far distance have to leave their homes very early in the morning and by this time they cannot do any cooking of their own, they resort to buying food from fast food restaurants, which is a plus for you as a business man or woman. Running a fast food restaurant business in a strategic location will boost patronage and grow your business exponentially.

The president of the association of fast food and confectioners of Nigeria told newsmen that fast foods contribute up to N200 billion in the growth of the economy annually and that all its members pay up to N1 billion in taxes and levies. This is proof that the business is vying. Let us take a close look at some of the popular brands of fast food restaurants in Nigeria and how they came to be.

In 1985, United African Company (UAC) launched a fast food restaurant chain in Nigeria popularly known as “Mr. Bigg’s” (one of Nigeria’s first and biggest fast food restaurant franchise). Prior to that time, the fast food industry was dominated by  multinational companies like Leventis, Kingsway and UTC, whose set-up was mainly for the elite and mostly located in big cities like Lagos, Ibadan and Port Harcourt. The majority of Nigerians who found the UTC snacks and Leventis stores too expensive had options of local restaurant settings commonly called, ‘mama put’ or ‘buka’.

Mr. Bigg’s brought a revolution into the fast food industry in Nigeria . It made cultural and local dishes as well as pastries available to the average Nigerian at an affordable price. So that, low income earners too can have the fast food restaurant experience as much as the rich do. So far, Mr. Biggs have up to 130 outlets across Nigeria controlling about 45% of the fast food industry in Nigeria and currently has two outlets in Ghana.

Kehinde Kamson, the founder of Sweet sensation confectionery limited, was a full time accountant when she established a confectionery business which she called “citicate-city caterers”. She would wake up early in the morning to make and distribute her pastries before heading to work. As the business grew, her pastries became very popular, especially in Unilag and her customer base increased tremendously. She had no choice than to quit her job as an accountant and run her confectionery business full time.

After four years of supplying pastries to big companies like UTC and Mr. Bigg’s, she started Sweet Sensation at a backyard shed in her family home and since then, her company has moved up the ladder with a number of outlets in Victoria Island, Ogba, Opebi and other parts of Lagos. She drew inspiration from one of her big clients, as she said, “Mr. Biggs inspired me beyond Imagination”. Amidst the influx of new brands in the fast food industry, consumers still consider Sweet sensation as a market leader in African cuisine.

These and many more are success stories of fast food restaurants in Nigeria. The good news is; you can start your own fast food restaurant with your business name (small or large scale), you can also buy popular fast food franchises.

Fast food restaurant business, like any other business requires that you study the terrain before you start the business. The following are some of the things you need to do when setting up a fast food restaurant in Nigeria.

Draw Your Business Plan

Everyone knows that the first thing to do when starting any business is to plan, and fast food restaurant business is not an exception. A business plan is like a to-do-list, where you have all the steps you want to take in starting your business written down.

Your business plan will include where you want your business to be located, which should be somewhere open, easily accessible and spacious. You must also make the location accommodating and comfortable for your customers. Nobody wants to eat in an uncomfortable environment. Good sitting arrangements, entertainment facilities like flat screen TVs connected to cable networks, Air conditioners (AC) at all angles of the restaurant to keep the atmosphere conducive, these are some of the measures you can use in making your restaurant conducive for your customers.

When you have considered the cost of putting all the measures discussed above in place with estimates of how much you will be needing to start the business itself. This will bring you to the next question, which is; how much capital you will need for the business and how do you intend to get it? You are lucky if you already have enough money to cover the start-up costs, but it is always advisable to play it safe by sourcing for more funds, either by obtaining loans from banks or borrowing from friends and family. This is to ensure that whatever miscellaneous expenditures that may arise along the line are sufficiently covered for.

Let’s not forget the fact that you have to register your business, in line with the provisions of the Law in Nigeria. You can choose to register as a business enterprise or as a limited liability company with the corporate affairs commission (CAC). It is also important that you register your QSR with the association of fast food and confectioners of Nigeria (AFFCON).

Buy a Popular Fast Food Franchise

Buying a franchise is one of the best ways to become an entrepreneur. In Nigeria here, most of the successful fast food brands are franchises. You might want to ask what a franchise is, a franchise is a legally binding agreement between two independent parties (franchisor and franchisee), in which the franchisor authorizes the franchisee to market a product/service in the trade name and brand of the franchisor.

Buying a fast food franchise will make the business boom quickly, unlike when you are running the business with your own brand. This is because, the brand you are buying a franchise from is already renowned. So, customers do not need extra canvassing because they already know the brand name and can easily relate with it.

Some successful franchise fast food businesses in Nigeria are the United African Company of Nigeria PLC’s “Mr. Bigg’s”, KFC and so on.

Choose Your Style Of Service And Menu

If you are not buying a franchise, then it is important that you choose your style of service. What type of food will you specialize in? Will you be making continental or local dishes? Will it be a combination of local and continental dishes with pastries and confectioneries?

Whether you are buying a franchise or not, it is equally important that you make a list of foods (menu) that will always be available in your restaurant with their prices.

Employ Good Chefs And Staff

A good chef makes a great restaurant. It’s not enough to have a big brand name and a huge outlet, the cuisines have to be up to standard and more. Therefore, before employing a chef, make sure that he is a great one and that he or she has had training in the preparation of different types of food.

You also need to employ the service of attendants or waiters and waitresses, depending on the style of service you have chosen. Ensure that you make varieties of food available at all times.

Run a Take-out/Delivery Service

This is another way in which fast food restaurants in Nigeria are upping their game. You don’t have to wait until customers come to your outlet to purchase food, you can as well take it to them. This works well for bankers and corporate entities, all your customers need to do is make their order known to you and you can take the food to them wherever they are.

You can also run a mobile outlet, where you have your foods in a van that bears your brand name, going from one place to the other. It will help customers buy your foods anywhere they find your mobile outlet without necessarily having to come to where your business is located.

It is important to note that as much as the food business is lucrative in Nigeria, there are a lot of competition. Therefore, after you have put all of the measures I have discussed in place, you need continuous market research and development to keep your business going in the right direction.

How to Write a Business Plan for a Food Business

Samuel Moore

Do you own a food business in Nigeria or do you have a plan to own one? If your answer is yes, then you need a business plan. Many businesses underestimate the importance of business plans, this is one of the major reasons why so many businesses fail . As the owner or prospective owner of an SME in Nigeria under the food sector, it is imperative to have a business plan. Let’s show you how to write a simple business plan for your food business.

What is a Business Plan?

A business plan is a plan that shows how your business will work and succeed. It is also the road map that guides your business from conception to success. There are different kinds of business plans depending on the purpose and the kind of business. A small food business doesn’t need a complicated business plan. If you are an SME in Nigeria, then you can have a one-page business plan .

Steps to Writing a One-Page Business Plan for your Food Business

This type of business plan is also known as a one-pager. It pushes you to produce clear thoughts about your food business because of its framework. The whole idea revolves around putting all the essentials on a single page.

Here’s what your one-page food business plan should contain:

a.      One-line pitch

b.      Business Summary

c.       Management

d.      Customer Problem

e.      Product/Services

f.        Target Market

g.      Sales/Marketing Strategy

h.      Financials

Below is an outline of a sample business plan for food products or restaurants and bars.

a.      Company name – This is where you fill in the company name. We will make use of ZFT Foods in this post.

b.      Product name – What product are you selling to the public? You can have a range of products or a single product. Most food businesses have a range of products.

c.       Customer problem – What problems are you trying to fix? This gives you a clear picture of who your target market and your competitors will be.

One-page Business Plan for Food Business

One-line pitch.

The one-line pitch helps you to grab the attention of the person reading your business plan. Don’t mistake this for a slogan or catchphrase, it is a pitch. So you can go with something like:

Enjoy amazing local and continental dishes at an affordable rate at ZFT Foods. We focus on providing healthy and delicious meals to meet your daily needs.

Business Summary

The business summary provides a clear description of the business and its objectives. You can also mention the products briefly, even though there’s a whole section dedicated to product description.

a.      Business name – ZFT Foods

b.      Business location – No. 123, XYZ Street, City, and State.

c.       Business mission and vision statements.

d.      A brief description of what the business is about.

Management Structure

This section of the one-page business plan describes the leadership of the business, you will be answering questions such as:

a.      Who owns the business?

b.      Who runs the business?

c.       Who else is on the management team?

Give a comprehensive description of the individual, stating their qualifications for the job. If you have partners, state who they are and also their qualifications.

Customer Problem

This is the basis of your business and determines the structure, raw materials, capital required, etc. Here’s an example to make this point clearer.

Customers on XYZ Street and its environs need tasty affordable meals in a serene location. Many of them also desire to have access to take-away packages of different sizes.

Product/Service Offerings

This part of the business plan gives a clear picture of your product or service offerings. You don’t just describe the products, you describe how you want to deliver them to your customers. It requires you to create a list of all the products you plan to offer. Be careful not to reveal your trade secret here. Many SMEs in Nigeria make that mistake when writing business plans.

Target Market

This section answers the question, “Who needs your products?” While it is crucial to state your current market, you should also have projections. This means that you should highlight who you plan to sell to in the nearest future beyond your current market.

Based on our example above, ZFT has the following under this section:

a.      People staying on XYZ Street and environs.

b.      Workers

c.       Students, etc.

Sales/Marketing Strategy

How do you plan to reach out to your target market? This is the section where you provide the answer to this question and explain your strategies in clear terms. Will you employ marketers? Do you plan to make use of a physical marketing model or you will drive sales using social media? Are you going to build a website?.

This is one of the most important aspects of a business plan. Investors want to know the viability of the business. If it is a startup business, then you should provide projections for the next few years. An existing business may need to provide revenue, expenditure, and profit figures for previous years.

12 Essential Steps to Starting a Fast Food Business in Nigeria that Succeeds

How to start a fast food business in Nigeria

1. Research and Planning

Before starting a fast food restaurant in Nigeria, it is important to do your research and plan carefully. This will help you avoid wasting time and money.

Take into consideration factors like the local population, their income levels, and the competition in the area.

In addition, think about transportation logistics and choose a location where you can easily conduct your main cooking operations.

If your business location is too far from where you reside, then think about the cost of going to and fro.

2. Define Your Concept.

When starting a fast food restaurant in Nigeria, it is important to define your concept. Decide on the type of fast food you want to offer, whether it’s rice, beans, fried chicken, or a combination of dishes.

Consider the preferences of Nigerians and what they enjoy.

Think about the timing that would work best for your business. Many Nigerians find it convenient to have breakfast and lunch at work, so consider offering options that cater to these meal times.

To stand out from competitors, develop a unique selling proposition. Determine what sets your fast food restaurant apart from others in the market.

It could be a special recipe, a particular cooking technique, or a focus on locally sourced ingredients. Highlight this unique aspect to attract customers and differentiate yourself in the industry.

3. Create a Business Plan

For your business plan, start by outlining your goals for the restaurant. Think about what you want to achieve, both in the short-term and long-term. This will give you a clear sense of direction and purpose.

Create a budget and estimate your startup costs, including expenses like rent and equipment.

Consider different financing options, such as personal savings, bank loans, or partnerships with investors, to secure the necessary funds.

When starting a business for the first time, it’s advisable to use the funds you have at hand first. Taking on a loan may cause you to feel unnecessary pressure.

Take into account employee wages, utilities, supplies, and maintenance. By carefully estimating these costs, you can ensure proper financial planning and avoid surprises down the road.

A well-crafted business plan will serve as a roadmap for your fast-food restaurant’s success.

4. Register Your Business

Here are some necessary permits and licenses required to operate a food business.

It’s important to note that specific requirements and procedures may vary depending on your location and the type of food business you plan to operate.

Business Registration: Register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to obtain a Certificate of Incorporation. This establishes your business as a legal entity.

Food Business Permit: Obtain a Food Business Permit from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). This permit ensures that your food business meets health and safety standards.

Value Added Tax (VAT) Registration : Register for VAT with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) if your annual turnover exceeds the threshold set by the government. VAT is a consumption tax on goods and services.

Trade License : Obtain a Trade License from your local government authority. This license grants permission to operate a business within a specific jurisdiction.

Signage Permit: Obtain a Signage Permit from the appropriate authorities if you plan to display signs or advertising materials for your food business.

5. Find a Suitable Location.

When scouting for the perfect location for your fast food business, keep an eye out for high-traffic areas that offer good visibility and easy accessibility.

These factors are key to attracting customers and building a strong presence.

It’s also wise to consider areas near offices, residential neighborhoods, and schools since they tend to draw a steady stream of hungry customers.

This guide is your key to finding the perfect business location in Nigeria.

Once you’ve chosen your ideal location, it’s time to negotiate a lease or purchase agreement. But that’s not all—safety and regulations should be top priorities.

Ensure the space meets all health and safety standards, and don’t forget to check if it has the necessary facilities for food preparation, storage, and comfortable dining areas.

It’s also important to consider the neighborhood’s reputation when it comes to crime. Look for an area that prioritizes safety and doesn’t tolerate lawlessness.

A secure environment will give you and your customers peace of mind. Let’s make sure your fast food business thrives in a safe and conducive space.

7. Get Your Equipment and Supplies Ready

To start your fast food restaurant in Nigeria, make sure you have the right equipment and supplies. Here’s what to consider:

Kitchen Equipment: Get reliable stoves, ovens, grills, fryers, refrigerators, freezers, and food processors that meet safety standards.

Utensils and Cookware : Stock up on knives, cutting boards, pots, pans, baking sheets, and serving dishes made of durable materials.

Food Storage: Use containers, bins, and shelving units to keep ingredients fresh and organized.

Smallwares and Serving Equipment: Don’t forget spatulas, ladles, tongs, spoons, trays, plates, bowls, glasses, and cutlery based on customer volume.

Cleaning and Sanitation Supplies : Keep a clean environment with detergents, sanitizers, dishwashing equipment, mops, brooms, and trash bins.

Ingredients and Food Supplies : Source fresh, safe ingredients from reliable local vendors and store them properly.

Look for talented chefs, cooks, kitchen staff, cashiers, and servers who are passionate about what they do.

But it doesn’t stop there—once you have your team onboard, invest in their growth and success.

Provide thorough training on food safety, customer service, and your brand’s standards.

And here’s a little secret: get to know your employees on a personal level. This will create a strong connection and help you understand their needs and desires.

Plus, it’ll make it easier to identify who is the perfect fit for upholding your brand standards.

With a motivated and well-trained team by your side, your fast-food business will flourish beyond expectations.

Fast Food Restaurant Business Plan

Start your own fast food restaurant business plan

Fresin Fries

Executive summary executive summary is a brief introduction to your business plan. it describes your business, the problem that it solves, your target market, and financial highlights.">, opportunity.

There is  an increasing demand for snack-type fast food, to be consumed while window shopping and walking around inside a shopping mall.

Fresin Fries will entice youngsters to bring their friends and family with our innovative environment, fresh-cut Belgian fries, and selection of unique signature dipping sauces.

Fresin Fries intends to cater to the bulk of teenagers and youngsters in Singapore. We have chosen this group for several important reasons. It is our goal to be "the extraordinary fast food place" and we believe that the age group from 15 to 25 is the primary age where brand building efforts could take place. They are on limited or fixed incomes and seek a value/price relationship that will not stretch their budgets.

Our secondary target is between the ages of 25 and 37, which are a heavy lounge/restaurant user group. They are more flexible in budgets and seek more than a value/price relationship.

Competition

Our main competitors in this segment are any food outlets within the 300 meter radius along the Orchard Road. In our location, there are Tori-Q, Pizza Walker, Starbucks, Bread Talk, and Rotiboy.

Our customers will have the total experience when visiting our outlet(s) and website as they will learn about this fascinating new "pop culture." We will sell merchandise from pre-packaged sauces and t-shirts, to potato cutters, all with our official brand attached to them.

Expectations

This plan is prepared to obtain a location for the initial launch of this concept. We plan to finance the costs with two investments of $100,000 total, one at startup and the other at the beginning of the second year. We expect strong growth for all three years, and profitability beginning in the third year.

Financial Highlights by Year

Financing needed.

The company is owned by the original 4 founders, who each will contribute $25,000 for the same amount of share, 25%, and $100,000 in paid-in capital at the start. This will cover start-up requirements. We expect to contribute a second $100,000 at the beginning of the second year.

Problem & Solution

Problem worth solving.

There is an  increasing demand for snack-type fast food, to be consumed while window shopping and walking around inside a shopping mall.

Our Solution

Our main focus will be serving high-quality food at a great value. Fries will strive to be a premier local fast food brand in the local marketplace. We want our customers to have the total experience when visiting our outlet(s) and website as they will learn about this fascinating new “pop culture.” We will sell merchandise from pre-packaged sauces and t-shirts, to potato cutters, all with our official brand attached to them.

Target Market

Market size & segments.

We are targeting young Singaporeans as our primary market. Orchard Road is the place to meet and hang out after school. Due to heavy extra-curricular activities among Singapore’s youth, it is common for high schoolers to have lunch inside shopping malls, and not at home. They tend to flock to fast food joints inside shopping malls across Orchard Road.

Our secondary market segment is the "Working Singaporeans." With so many shopping malls in the vicinity, Orchard Road is the haven for shoppers and job seekers alike. In the new Paragon Shopping Centre, there are more than 8,000 workers currently working as sales persons and boutique staff. There are more than 10 major shopping malls across Orchard Road, including Ngee Ann City, the biggest shopping mall in the nation, employing more than 50,000 workers.

Lastly, Orchard Road is also the destination for tourists staying in the area. The Meritus Mandarin, Crown Prince Hotel, the Hilton, and Popular Hotel are a few of the biggest accommodations in Singapore. Tourists will stroll Orchard Road, hunting for the latest trend in fashion and have no time to stop for a full meal during shopping. Fresin Fries is the alternative for a quick bite while shopping the fancy boutiques in the area

Current Alternatives

More details on our competitors:

Tori-Q Tori-Q is locally owned franchise who sells Japanese BBQ skewers. Established in 1998, Tori-Q had expanded its operation into neighboring countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Tori-Q is popular among local teenagers as it offers fast service to its customers. Commonly, Tori-Q outlets are rather small, and can only serve a maximum of 6 guests. It is a choice for those who are in a hurry and would like to grab a quick lunch on the way.

Pizza Walker Pizza Walker is a joint venture positioned as gourmet pizza joint in Singapore. Most of its retail outlets are decorated with welcoming ambience, such as flowers and see-through kitchens. Pizza Walker is a good place to hang out, and the place is always full during lunch hour. It has more than enough tables to serve a maximum of 55 guests. Its specialty is all-you-can-eat pizza!

Starbucks Starbucks’ strategy entering the lunch market had made some impact in Singapore. Usually, a lunch menu in Singapore consists of "fried and BBQ stuff" such as roast pork with rice or the Big Mac. Starbucks is one of the first food retailers that popularized "light and healthy" alternatives such as salad or lean sandwich as an options for Singapore’s lunch accommodations.

Bread Talk As the most successful franchiser in Singapore, Bread Talk is surely becoming a threat for most food retailers. Bread Talk not only rented most of the retail space along Orchard Road, but now they are doing delivery to offices and apartments nearby. Bread Talk outlets usually consist of a huge see-through kitchen, and bread trays ready for pick-up by customers, with three or four cashiers at front, to speed up the queue. Rumor has it that Bread Talk sold more than 35,000 breads each day in just one of their retail outlets.

Rotiboy A Malaysian franchise. Rotiboy is quite popular in the region as it is now expanding into several cities in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. Rotiboy offers simplicity for quick lunch franchiser, and often considered alternatives for its long queueing rivals.

Our Advantages

We will provide a combination of excellent food at value pricing, with fun packaging and atmosphere. Fresin Fries is the answer to an increasing demand for snack-type fast food, to be consumed while window shopping and walking around inside a shopping mall.

Keys to Success

This is what it will take to make us successful:

  • Create a unique, innovative, entertaining menu that will differentiate us from the rest of the competition.
  • Control costs at all times, in all areas and implement a conservative approach to growth policy. Although, we provide more than enough fund to open more than one outlet, we want to be on the safe side of the business.
  • Sell the products that are of the highest quality, as well as keeping the customers happy with all of our product categories from food to store merchandising.
  • Provide 100% satisfaction to our customers and maintaining the level of excellent services among other competitors.
  • Encourage the two most important values in fast food business: brand and image, as these two ingredients are a couple of main drivers in marketing communications.
  • Get access to high-traffic shopping malls near the target market.
  • Promote good values of company culture and business philosophy.

Marketing & Sales

Marketing plan.

Social media is critical, along with a combination of local media and local store marketing programs will be utilized at each location. We augment the social media with traditional launch media in the beginning, and point-of-sale promotion throughout. As soon as a concentration of stores is established in a market, then we may explore print media, but of course the best form of advertising is still "buzz" via social media. By providing a fun and energetic environment, with unbeatable quality at an acceptable price in a clean and friendly outlet, we will be the talk of the local social media. Therefore, the execution of our concept is the most critical element of our plan. We will actively build our brand, through the selling of supporting materials, such as merchandise, promotional items and other marketing gimmicks similar to those of other fast food franchises.

The sales strategy is to build and open new locations in order to increase revenue. However, this plan will be implemented when the one "market tester" outlet showed potential growth. As each individual location will continue to build its local customer base over the first three years of operation, the goal of each store is shown on the graph as well as annual sales of our flagship store

Locations & Facilities

Fresin Fries locations will range in size from 50 – 70 meter square and will seat from 15 – 25 guests. Our first location will be on the larger end of this range. The location will feature its own originality in merchandise display and other brand building attributes. We will equip the outlet with modern furniture and aim for cleanliness and an open feeling. We are currently looking at several possible sites in shopping malls along Orchard Road.

The space selection will be chosen based upon the following criteria:

  • Community size: minimum of 800,000 people within a radius of 8 kilometers.
  • Tourist destination.
  • Easy access.
  • Large percentage of teenagers in the community.

All of these qualities are consistent with Fresin Fries’ goal of providing a top quality fast food experience. We want "word-of-mouth" to be our best form of marketing, where our customers value our brand as something exciting and cannot wait to tell their friends and neighbors. And of course these days word of mouth is amplified word of mouth, via social media.

Milestones & Metrics

Milestones table, key metrics.

Our key metrics that will help us succeed are:

  • Detailed operational metrics for the flagship operations. We need to make the sales forecast and gross margin, plus sales per square foot. The original has to be running smoothly and be operationally solid before we go to second location.
  • Sales per employee. We need to watch this variable very closely. We can’t expand without making sure that this model works with the planned amount of employees.

Ownership & Structure

Fresin Fries is a privately held company. It will be registered as a Limited company, with ownership 25% – Guy Fry, 25% – Sam Sauce, 25% – Carl Cone, 25% – Harry Hip.

Management Team

Guy Fry and Sam Sauce have more than 10 years of experience in the food industry. Both are currently employed as Corporate Staff of Company A.

Personnel Table

Financial plan investor-ready personnel plan .">, key assumptions.

  • Status quo regarding regulation
  • No major change in macro-economic or political situation.
  • We assume our product, product quality, and social media marketing will generate healthy growth in buzz and steady increase in sales
  • We assume efficient management of multiple sites
  • We will make the first site work before moving to the second.
  • We will not add sites while any site is not working well
  • We expect expansion will cause a loss in our second year, but that it will be an acceptable loss and we will have working capital to finance it.

Expenses by Month

Net profit (or loss) by year, use of funds.

Our startup funding of $100,000 will cover both startup expenses and initial assets. specifically:

Startup expenses of $54,500 incurred before launch:

These pre-launch, pre-revenue expenses show up in our financials as negative retained earnings in the Balance Sheet at launch.

  • Legal: $3,000
  • Furniture and interior: 17,000 (We discussed calling these assets, but we think we can legitimately expense them instead; that’s better for tax treatment)
  • Rent: $15,000. We need five weeks in the location for fixup and such before we launch.
  • Branding: $3,500. Includes imagery, website, logo, social media accounts, etc.
  • Location fixup: $10,000
  • Other: $2,000
  • Total: $50,500

Current assets required:

  • Cash: $50,000 to cover early deficits, working capital, etc.
  • Inventory: $10,000
  • Plates, napkins, etc. $4,000 (other current assets in starting balance)

Long-term Assets

  • Kitchen and fixtures: $22,000

Total Startup Costs:

  • $54,500 in expenses incurred before launch
  • $86,000 in assets required at launch, including $50K cash reserve.
  • Total: $140,500 startup cost

Sources of Funds

Investment will be in equal parts from all four founders. We expect to invest $100,000 to start and an additional $100,000 at the beginning of the second year. We plan to avoid commercial borrowing.

It is now time to convert the food business ideas into a sustainable business. Beyond passion, you need a business model that allows you to creatively deliver value to your target audience. The following will guide you on the basic steps you need to take.

Research And Pick A Niche

The first step is to do thorough research and find out the market you want to serve. Asking questions like who do I want to target? Do I want to target students, elites, executives, or low-income earners? Will the market be able to afford the kind of meal I want to serve? Or should I create specific ethnic meals?

Develop A Business Plan

Everyone would want to skip this step in business feeling it is less important. But on the contrary, it is one of the most appropriate things to do even before you begin your business. A business plan is a written document that outlines the goals, vision, and objectives of the business. It is a road map that suggests the next line of action and the way to go.

A business plan is usually written from the result of business research. Beyond the paperwork, doing research will enable you to know the basics of the business and give you insights into what you’re getting into. It will enable you to ask questions like, what kind of food should I sell? Is there a demand for the type of food I want to sell? Who are the existing competitors? How do I stand out? How long will it take to break even in the business? Who are my consumers? And many others.

Start Up Capital

Food businesses demand money and time. It is capital intensive whether it is done on a small or large scale. Before you begin to make a profit, you must have created awareness for your brand and gain customers’ trust. But until then, you need to keep financing the business.

So, to start the business, have a source of income that caters to the startup and running cost at least for a period of time. Cost elements include rent and location set up, equipment purchase, employee salaries, marketing costs, logistics , and ingredient costs. Your business plan will list these costs and you will decide if you can finance it yourself or source for funding.

There are different ways to finance your business. We discussed the different ways to finance your business here. Go through it and choose the one that works best for you. It’s always best to start small, test the waters and scale gradually.

Register The Business

Registering your business is the first step to structuring it. And this requires registering with the Corporate Affairs Commission and other appropriate authorities. This way, customers can trust your services and you can enjoy benefits tailored to business owners.

Firstly, choose the perfect name that explains your business offering , secure the name at CAC, then register it. You can do it yourself or hire the service of experts like ReDahlia . Reach out to ReDahlia at 43B Emina Crescent off Toyin Street, Ikeja Lagos, or [email protected].

Thereafter, proceed to register with the National Agency for Food And Drug Administration Control, obtain the necessary permits and licenses relating to the food business and unique to your state of operation.

Location And Set Up

Your location can make or break your food business dream. It will determine the kind of menu to create, sales volume, and the kind of people that will patronise you.

You can start the business from your kitchen and take orders online. That way, you can expand at your pace. But if you are looking to have a physical location, consider access to the target market, hygiene, size and space, parking space, access to water, access to customers and suppliers, safety, future expansion, etc.

If you are renting a space, make sure the projected financial revenue will be enough to pay for the rent. Also, ensure to fashion out compartments like dining area, cooking area, serving area, store, and restroom layout. Then, get the right tools and equipment.

Equipment Needed For A Food Business

For any of the food business ideas mentioned, these are the basic equipment you need

  • Hand washing sinks
  • Refrigerator
  • Tables and chairs
  • Dust bin, broom, bucket, mop
  • Food cutter, Knifed
  • Bowls and buckets
  • Pot, fryer and cooking gas

Hire Employees

As earlier stated, the food business requires time and money. Beyond that, you need employees who will support the dreams and vision of the business. You can not possibly run the business on your own. So you should look to hire basic staff like cooks, waiter, and waitresses, servers, drivers, etc.

Also, for a more professional outlook, you may require your staff to wear uniforms. Aside from a uniform for the general staff, the chef and servers should wear aprons, hairnets, and other uniform items. You may choose a unique style or color that goes in line with your brand.

Marketing And Promotion

How you market your food business and get customers is highly important because this will determine if you will stay in the business for long. Hence, you must strive to create awareness and ensure your business is perceived in the right light.

Some of the ways to do this include;

Online Presence

Whatever business you are doing, if you want to stand out, then building an online presence is a must. Without an online presence, your food business will be limited only to walk-in customers and this can limit your profit. So, by taking your business online, you remove geographical barriers.

An online presence involves building a website and leveraging social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram . With a website, the online audience can get full information about your service offerings, look through your menu list, and place orders.

Through social media , you can build a loyal community by sharing educational content about food. This will help generate traffic and increase sales.

Brand Your Business

Your branding defines what your business is all about and what you stand for. It gives the customers an idea of what you want them to think of and set the tone of your business. Therefore, it is important to design a logo, business card, flyers, and brand messages that give a clear illustration of your food business.

The message can be used across all social media platforms, on your delivery box, and as an awareness material for incoming customers. Basically, how you market yourself will create a good or bad impression of you and your business. So, you must be creative in creating brand messages.

If you love to make small chops and you are in need of a business, you need to stop your search. You already have a money spinner in your hands. The beauty of this business is that you can make money in almost any part of the country you are located.

Though there is a lot of competition, there is also a lot of opportunity in this business. We will look into how to start your own small chops business in Nigeria and also provide you with a sample small chops business plan in Nigeria.

What is small chops?

It is important that we define small chops before we continue this discussion. Many people confuse small chops for pastries. They are totally different from each other. It is very possible to be good at one and suck at making the other.

Small chops are also known as finger foods. Here is a list of the common small chops we have in Nigeria:

  • Asun (smoked spicy goat meat)
  • Banana Puff Puff
  • Gizdodo/Dodo Gizzards (Plantain & Gizzards)
  • Meat stuffed yam (potato) balls
  • Mini Grilled chicken
  • Mini Puff Puff
  • Mini Sausage Rolls
  • Nigerian Battered Plantain (Dodo Ikire)
  • Nigerian Mini Donuts
  • Peppered Ponmo (Cow leather)
  • Peppered snails
  • Spring rolls, etc.

How lucrative is the small chops business in Nigeria?

This is a very important question that you need to ask before diving into the waters of this business. You shouldn’t go into any business without answering this question. In Nigeria, you can make a lot of money in the small chops business.

To answer this question, you need to find out who needs your services first of all. So who needs small chops in Nigeria?

  • Weddings (traditional and white)
  • House warming
  • Business meetings, to mention a few.

As you will expect, the more guests you are catering to, the more money you will be making. Imagine you are catering to a thousand guests and you charge #400 for each plate. That is already #400,000 for one event. By the time you take out your running cost, you should still have about #300,000 left.

If you have to run these gigs thrice a month, can you guess how much you’d be making? This is just a picture of how lucrative this sector is. Many people make far more than this monthly from the small chops business. This money doesn’t come immediately you begin this business, it comes as a result of hard work and strategizing.

Equipment you need to start your small chops business in Nigeria

Before we mention the equipment you need to start your small chops business, note that you don’t need all of them at once. You can begin small and then work your way up the ladder. Here is a basic list of equipment you need:

  • Big frying pans
  • Flat wooden spatula
  • Measuring cups
  • Turning stick (omorogun)

While many people argue that you should get a shop, it isn’t so advisable. A shop is an extra cost which will cause you some extra headaches. Instead of this, you should channel that money into running the business. The best idea is to run the business from your home or compound.

This business is a delivery-based business. Push more funds into getting equipment and publicizing your business. Let’s take a look at how you can start your small chops business in Nigeria.

Things to Consider When Starting a Small Chops Business

Here are a few tips to help you start your small chops business to ensure that you enjoy success.

Learn the ropes

This business requires some level of expertise. You cannot begin if you don’t know how to make the small chops. Every person operating in this business today, learned the ropes before they started.

You can learn from another person who is an expert in the business. Another way to brush up your skills is by watching tutorials on YouTube. You can also download or purchase recipe materials and use them to practice.

It takes a lot of practice to get better with making your small chops. Beyond learning to make small chops, learn how to package your products and market them efficiently. It is also important to learn how to serve your products at events.

Purchase your equipment

After learning the trade, the next line of action is investing in your equipment. Like we said earlier, you don’t have to buy all the equipment at once. You can buy a few you need at first and buy others as time goes by.

Some people may recommend that you rent equipment but this isn’t so good for your business in the long run. Try to raise about #50,000 and use this to get your equipment. Develop a savings plan to help you make the most of your profits as you grow in the business. From your savings, you can purchase more sophisticated equipment.

Advertise your business

This is where the major work is. If you have everything else in place and you are not able to market your business, it won’t grow. You can make use of two major forms of marketing, online and offline marketing. We advise that you employ both marketing strategies.

Make use of social media, especially Instagram and Facebook to market your services. Post pictures and videos of your work to attract your target market. You can also run sponsored adverts to gain more followership.

For offline marketing, you can produce a few fliers and some catchy business cards to attract clients. You can also design customized t-shirts which you will wear at events. These unique steps can help you grow your client base very easily.

Customer service

From your adverts, you are bound to attract a few clients at least. The way you treat these customers will determine how well they will speak about you. Word-of-mouth has proven to be one of the most powerful ways of growing brands.

For you to get such referrals, you have to treat your customers right. This means your customer service has to be top-notch. Provide complimentary services and discounts to customers and treat every impending issue with tact. This way, you can be sure they will come back and refer others to your business.

Register the business

We are mentioning this last because it is not completely necessary to register in the beginning. However, as your business begins to grow, it is important that you register the business. This helps to grow your reputation and makes customers perceive you as trustworthy. By the way, a registered business will find it easier to get loans or investors when the need arises.

The small chops business is not one tailored to suit women alone, men can also run this business. It is a matter of interest rather than gender. Putting your effort and time into this business will be very rewarding as we have shown above.
