Courtesy and pride is a word which has comprehensive meanings. Courtesy means ”use of excellent, gentle and politeness in his behavior while dealing with others and the person who shows such behavior, is called courteous man” A courteous person has tender feelings and good wishes. He is always polite and pleasant to others. He never behaves harshly and does not injure anyone,s feelings. Christian Nestell Bovee declares it’s uniqueness  in the following words;

Courtesy deals with manners. Good manners spread love, affection, and kindness and win others’hearts and make sincere friends. Courtesy brings decency and politeness. It nourishes good wishes for others. A courteous person bears good manners for others. He is pleasant and polite to everybody. Francis Bacon highlights this concept in the following words; ‘ ‘If a man is gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world” Ralph Waldo Emerson declares;

” LIFE IS SHORT, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS ENOUGH TIME FOR COURTESY”

There are golden words for this concept: ”Think good, wish good, speak good and do good” Courtesy is a sacred emotion. It is a great blessing and endowment of Allah Almighty. A courteous person is liked and loved by all. A courteous person remains very popular among his friends and relatives. The well- behaved courteous people are the foundation of a good society and nation.The Holy Prophet (SAW) says:

”THE BEST AMONGST YOU IS THE ONE WHOSE MANNERS ARE THE BEST”

The saying shows the importance of courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) himself showed a high degree of courtesy throughout his life. The Holy Prophet (SAW) gave great importance to courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) condemned irrational attitude in these words; ”Do not inflict injury, nor repay one’s injury” A courteous person always shuns bad ways and follows the right one. Men have been created for perfection. The Holy Quran exhorts in these words;

”YOU ARE THE BEST OF PEOPLE EVOLVED FOR MANKIND, ENJOINING WHAT IS RIGHT, FORBIDDING WHAT IS WRONG”

A courteous man is kind and polite to everyone. He adopts good and decent manners all the time. He always respects of feelings of others. He never teases or disturbs anybody. Hazrat Ali (R.A) says; ”Meet others with smiling face, It is the very first good to others . courtesy earns good social and mutual contacts. When we say to others ”salaam” it means ”May Allah keep you in safety” In fact, we pray for the safety of the other and get the same in return. If we have good wishes for others, naturally others will also regard our sentiments and feelings. A courteous person earns great fame, even without spending a penny.

It teaches us great values. It teaches us to be ready to help others. It encourages us to join hands with those who may be in trouble. They may be sick, old or depressed. Aristotle has said: ”The goodness of good man shines through his deeds” We should not bear malice and ill-will in our hearts. We should work for the betterment of others. We should develop friendly and cordial relations with others. This is possible only through soft and polite conversation. There is a French Proverb:

”TO SPEAK KINDLY DOES NOT HURT THE TONGUE”

The elders, the seniors, and parents should act as a role model of courtesy for the youngsters and children. Teachers can play an important role in making people courteous. The value of courtesy must be kept at the priority level in educational institutions and offices.

When you look up the meaning of courtesy in a dictionary it manifests a number of meanings, i.e., politeness, good manners, civility, respect, kindness, gallantry, etc. When you take courtesy as a term, then it means polite behavior with others. If we have a glance at every religion of the world, it teaches the same concept while dealing with people disregard of color, race, language, identity, economic status, etc. Besides this kindness, one has to be responsive as well.

The person who shows courtesy is loved by the people, which in turn, creates positivity and a pleasant social environment in his surroundings. Consequently, the effects of this positivity also prevail in his life and take him on the path of success. Everyone wants to help the polite person if it comes to the push.  The courteous person is actually the basis of a successful society.

In the ancient past especially in Stone Age, when man was not so much social, used to live in the caves, had no far relations with the other people was not aware of this act of kindness. Many wars were fought due the crudeness and rudeness. As time passes the man became civilized and came to know about ethics and manners, which lead him to a society of civilized persons.

Apart from such mannered persons of a civilized society, there are many among them who are still not courteous, they are impatient people with no tolerance which makes it difficult to add harmony in a society. Many conflicts arise on the family, neighborhood, or even of regional level due to such an unkind school of thought.

The following reasons can be considered for the deterioration of politeness and courtesy among societies.

• Detachment from religions :  The history of human evolution shows that with the passage of time the civilizations developed. They incorporate many customs, norms, and traditions based on the religion of the settlement as they grew. The teaching of every religion reveals almost the same approach towards the act of kindness, politeness, and courtesy.

The different eras of human civilizations showed the adaptation of any one religion in the past but with the passage of time and development now people are more inclined towards the worldly attitude rather than religion which deprived them of the basic teaching, how to live with humanity not cruelty of selfishness.

• Role of elders:  The other thing which matters a lot is the role of elders in the grooming of their Youngers. Most people are not spending time with their children and do not share any learning behaviors or meaningful stuff, moral stories, etc. which can help them to survive better in society. The tradition of storytelling and guiding kids is now diming, mostly people are tangled in the race to earn more and more, and they left their children in the daycare centers or push off them to schools, bypassing all other responsibilities regarding their children.  
• Role of teachers:  Teachers are the society makers. They build individual just like to construct a man from a dough with everything of his own school of thoughts, if a teacher is responsible towards his society, will be keener in the transferring of moral culture with the teachings of ethics and manners along with courtesy which is a basic thing in a group of humans which we called as a society. Unfortunately, this culture is dwindling now; the teachers are not fulfilling their duties regarding the basic needs of spending life with basic human behaviors.
• Lower standards of morals:   As stated earlier that in history with the passage of time the civilization became stronger with strong moral values. Regrettably, the modern era is not considering the strong moral values of courtesy and is considering it just a wastage of time, which in turn have many adverse effects but the man is unaware of it.
• Selfishness : With modernization, the culture of sympathy and kindness is diminishing. People are more inclined towards self-centering rather than thinking about others. 
• Media:  Media have many modes like electronic, print, web, and social. With the development of technology, the world is like a global village. Many cultures of the world are mixing now. People are more likely to adopt the imported or non-indigenous cultures through these media modes, which affect them negatively. Human behavior showed that the conservativeness of individual cultures made people bounded to their own way of living styles in their respective societies.
• No sensitivity towards human feelings:   Going towards entropy, man is no more sensitive, and not considering human feelings.  Every person is unaware of the other even he is living next door.
• Money is everything:  Money, Money, and Money is everything now.  When man was not developed he used to take care of human emotions but with the passage of time, this is now an unnecessary aspect which is nothing to do with.
• More towards expansion and have no time:  Man has to run and do worldly expansions. According to him the courtesy and politeness are now like a hurdle in his way to development. He considers it the full wastage of time and nothing else.
•   Lifestyle : The lifestyle of contemporary man does not allow him to stop for a while and behave in a courteous way. He is more like a machine with no feelings. The job structure and shortage of time have made him a robot than a human being.

Various businessman and successful people are achieving heights. This is because of their good manners and skills. If a boss does not speak properly with his employees then they will leave the job. Therefore good manners are essential in any field of life.

Our parents have always taught us to respect our elders . Because if we won’t respect our elders then our Youngers will not respect us. Respect also comes in good manners. Respect is one of the most essential needs of a person. Moreover, many people work really hard to earn respect. Since I was a child I have always heard from my parents that respect is the utmost thing you should aim for. Therefore everyone deserves respect in life.

Courtesy means gentle and polite behavior in dealing with people in our day to day life.

It is an act of civility and good manners. Courtesy is a great virtue in a man's life. Courtesy demands one to be modest, tasteful and decent in his talking to and behaving with others.   Courtesy is the gift of treating others with warmth and respect. It means according dignity to people by being considerate, responsive, and kind in our dealings with them.

Courtesy costs nothing but pays a lot in return. A Courteous person is liked and loved by all. This type of men remain s very popular among his friends and relatives. Everybody  have willingness to help him in the time of need .These well behaved courteous people are the foundation of good society and nation. But these days the number of these types of people is less. That is why our society is suffering a lot from ill antisocial activities. It is because Courtesy create great atmosphere of living with coherence. Most of the people whom we come across everyday are generally arrogant, impatient and self centered. They neither love other nor are loved by any of them.

The elders , seniors and parent have big role to make our society and nation courteous and well behaved by imparting and building the parameters of good behavior and courtesy in  younger, subordinate and children respectively. Teachers have also great role to model our students on right path of courtesy. The value of  courtesy must be kept at the priority level in the schools. It also has a monitoring process and regulation from government side to create healthy society.

Where to maintain courtesy:

*At the time of receiving relative we should use polite words. We must avoid any negative comments about the forefront ; which will drag him into uneasy state. We should showcase ourselves with cheers and with warm welcome.

*If we are having tea or food and somebody comes during this time, then we must ask him for having same thing which  are being eaten by us at that time.

*We must avoid rudeness while dealing with newcomers in our city. This sends a strong message of high ethics of our city to the newcomers.

Courtesy means showing politeness and gentleness in one’s behavior while dealing with people in our daily routine.  Dealing with proper manners and polite behavior is a social proper act.  For instance showing respect for others, apologizing when you do something wrong to someone, respecting the needs of others and being kind to someone are the best examples of courtesy.  In simple words courtesy is a polite remark or a considerate act.  It is a gesture of civility and good manner.  Courtesy is a great rectitude in life of a person.

Another word for courtesy is civility and the one who shows courtesy is known as courteous man.  Courtesy demands humbleness and decency in conversations and behaviors.  Courtesy can be defined as the aptitude of dealing others with affection and respect.  It is an act of dignity by being considerate, responsive and kind in our dealings with others.  The act of civility cost nothing but rewards a lot in return.  A civilized and courteous person is liked and bears a soft spot in everyone’s heart.  This kind and courteous person is always loved by family and friends.  Courtesy is the prominent trait of a person.  Courtesy is a two way behavior.  When you are kind to someone then you will also get kindness in return.  So courtesy is the most preferable trait for being popular among the society.  It can never be possible that one person is harsh and rude in his behavior while the other one is soft and kind.

One of the remarkable examples of courtesy is to forgive people for their mistakes.  A courteous person never minds the minor damages that someone does accidently.  Other forms of courtesy in our everyday life are admiring others efforts, showing respect to elders and affection to Youngers, sacrificing for others and giving warm welcome to others.  Courtesy and act of kindness not only enhance our personality in front of others but also owns a great noble mark on character.  The first and foremost thing that matters is our character.  A person with good moral character is always liked by others while an ill-mannered person is never liked and respected by anyone.  Act of courtesy is free of class and race.  It is a God gift to humanity.  Courtesy never lives in huge explanations and long conversation but it lives in good deeds and noble actions.  Courtesy adds charm to our behavior and conduct.  A cultured person is always characterized by his polite and courteous manners.

Islam is religion of ethical codes and moral values.  Muslims are always referred by good manners, truthfulness, respect and courtesy.  The most important equipment of traveler of right way is good manner and noble deed.  A person cannot be both kind and rude in his behavior at the same time.  Devil was punished from God not because of lack of information and knowledge but because of ill manners.  The subject of courtesy is to make people being conscious about their actions that are being watched by Divine.  So acts like courtesy, elegance and modesty become natural part of their livings.  The reason due to which human beings are superior to all creatures is good manners and civility.  Human being becomes respectable in presence of Allah Almighty because of courtesy and being kind to His creatures.  This is the reason behind the special place of good manners and courtesy in the hearts of friends of Allah Almighty.  Many close friends of Allah Almighty defined “Sufism” as “good manners and courtesy”. Jalal u Din Rumi very elegantly states this reality in following lines

“ Open your eyes and look carefully into the word of Allah from beginning to the end. The whole Qur’an, all of its verses, is but explanation of good manners.”

The friends of Allah Almighty got highest levels of spirituality just because of good manners and courtesy.  Imam Rabbani states

“ None can make progress towards union with Allah Almighty without complying with the measures of good manners. The way of great Sufis is composed of good manners from beginning to the end.”  

Our beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was always inclined to be gracious and kind hearted.  Some of the key notes of His personality are courtesy, tenderness, simplicity, sympathy and generosity.  Once he said to his wife: “0 ‘A’ishah! Never turn away any needy man from your door empty-handed. 0 ‘A’ishah! Love the poor; bring them near to you and God will bring you near to Him on the Day of Resurrection”. He also went much further on to say: “Seek me among your weak ones, for you are given provision, or you are given help only by reason of the presence of your weak ones”.  He took a great interest in welfare of poor and needy people.  He (PBUH) had great compassion for the people in trouble.  The Prophet said

“ One of the finest acts of kindness is for a man to treat his fathers’ friends in a kindly way after he has departed” 

Courtesy makes societies worth living and peaceful.  Numerous social evils, sense of individuality, quarrels and hatred are the outcomes of lack of courtesy in a society.  Courtesy bring peace and calm.  It welcomes smiles on faces of citizens.  It is the way of bringing people closer to each other.  We cannot live in smooth and social life without courtesy.  Courtesy adorns our personality and builds durable and long lasting relations.  Material wealth can be lost and stolen but an act of kindness will always stay with us.  In order to achieve this goal of peaceful environment we need to be in company of good mannered and righteous believers.

Courtesy meaning is showing politeness toward others through our attitude and behavior. The opposite of courtesy is tyranny. Courtesy is the most friendly virtue in society. As despotism is the root of all vices, courtesy is the spring of all merits. Courtesy means rehearsing good mores, refined habits, and polite gestures. 

Courtesy, in fact, springs from good parentage, nobility of mind, and a gentle heart. To be more precise, doing one’s duty in a consummate manner displays courtesy. Law of injustice is ruling the universe, misdeeds are punished and noble deeds are rewarded by a hidden power. It is not possible that If we sow seeds of corn, we cannot expect a crop of wheat. If we plant a lemon tree, we cannot expect it to yield sweet mangoes. This world is like a dome. Cry aloud and what you hear back is what you cry. The same is the case with courtesy. A courteous man is always respected by everyone. Someone has rightly said,

“As you sow, so shall you reap.” (Quotation)

Words have the power and magic to guide us. A little kind word can cheer, heal, console, elevate and enlighten man. The real beauty lies in the heart. The real grace lies in our attitude. It lies in the behavior that we show to everyone. It can create a peaceful and happy atmosphere. Our dealings should be equal to everyone i.e. with the rich, the poor, and the needy. We can please others through our kindness and well behave approach.

Our Holy Prophet(S.A.W) imposed great stress upon courtesy and kindness. He (S.A.W) himself lead a life, which was virtuous and polite. He (S.A.W) taught us all the basic manners we needed and he (S.A.W) preached his message to respect our fellow beings. Courtesy helps a man to become a true Muslim and a good citizen. Hazrat Ali (R.A) was a noble, kind-hearted, and righteous man. He (R.A) was also a man of brave humble and forgiving spirit. Gentle in behavior and affectionate in conduct, he (R.A) set the noblest example of the character to the world. Even during his khilafat, he remained simple in living and courteous to the poor. Our beloved and great leader Quaid-e-Azam was a great paragon of courtesy. He treated people with politeness. This quality not only endeared him to his own people but also won the respect and admiration of his opponents.

If courtesy is part of our character, we are always successful. A man who is courteous greets others smilingly with open arms. He respects the elders and loves the young people.

He loves mankind and prays for their safety and betterment. He is always ready to help the poor and needy. A courteous fellow is always ready to sacrifice his everything for the welfare of his fellow men. He lives in peace with his neighbors. His mission is to help the needy, protect the weak and be sympathetic to his fellow citizens. Indeed, more courtesy is all that mankind needs.

“Courtesy costs nothing but pays a huge dividend” is an apt maxim which has been guiding mankind through all the stages of civilization.” A man without a sense of courtesy” says the great essayist and moral teacher, Francis Bacon, “is an animal with human form.”

Courtesy is a term which can be explained and interpreted in various ways. Courtesy, as a matter of fact, is a term that embraces every walk of life and concerns all of us. Each of us is normally bound with one or other forms of curtest. We have to show courtesy, on one part to elders while they, on their part too, maintain certain principles of courtesy to be extended to their young ones. That is why the cult of courtesy is governed by the principle of “give and take”.

There are numerous instances of showing courtesy to others very simple and easy causing you absolutely no difficulty on strain. For example, if you are traveling in a bus which is packed with people and you have got seat but a lady is standing. It is the principle of courtesy that you should offer her your seat, no matter whether she accepts your invitation or not.

Another form of courtesy which is generally ignored by us is that of “thanking” and saying “Please” If someone offers you a cup of tea, before you accept it, you should say “thank you.” Even if you do not want to drink it, you should say.” Thank you, but I do not drink tea.” Similarly people also refuse to use the word “Please” which as a matter of fact costs nothing. It also has a tremendous impact on the other person.

Girls’ soccer Top 10: A trio of undefeated teams top midseason ranks

The Independence Tigers, defending Class 5 champions, led this year’s preseason rankings despite undergoing lots of roster turnover and having no seniors on the team this spring.

The Tigers haven’t missed a step early on during this season’s title defense, outscoring opponents 48-7 and storming to a 10-0 start. Independence has lost just once since the beginning of 2023, and its continued dominance this year keeps the Tigers at the top of The Post’s midseason rankings.

Lilli Lubic, one of three junior captains on the team, leads the way for Independence with a team-high 12 goals and 12 assists. The Tigers’ new group has quickly developed chemistry through occasional player-led training sessions, team breakfast trips and group celebrations after goals.

“We're always goofy. We do some celebrations and make sure everyone is included,” junior Jordan Turner said after Independence’s 6-1 win over Briar Woods on April 22. “I think just the chemistry is mostly built off of all of us feeling comfortable with each other and just knowing that we're going on the field to have fun, not just to win.”

Colgan, another reigning state champion, follows Independence at No. 2. The Sharks are also undefeated despite losing eight starters from last season. Freedom (South Riding), Battlefield and Madison round out the top five.
