DAAD Scholarships - An Overview

in the lobby

Would you like to study, carry out research or learn German in Germany and are you looking for funding? Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe – making it the world's largest funding organisation of its kind. Learn more about our scholarship options.

DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programmes, internships are also funded.

DAAD awards Research Grants – One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates for PhD students from almost all countries of origin. A grant for a full doctoral programme in Germany is offered primarily to applicants from developing and threshold countries (based on the OECD-DAC list ).

Scholarships for a Master's degree in Germany are available, in particular, for persons from industrial countries.

Students and doctoral candidates who are at risk of being denied educational or other rights in their country of origin have the chance to apply for a scholarship from the Hilde Domin Programme . Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the scholarship programme but are nominated by an institution or organisation that is a legal entity domiciled in Germany. Thereafter, suitable candidates will be contacted by the DAAD and invited to apply via the DAAD application portal.

Also available are so-called " Sur-place and Third Country Programmes " in which students and young scientists and researchers are offered DAAD funding for a graduate programme, doctoral programme or postdoc period in their home country or region.

If you wish to apply for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database , paying particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database will take you to the application portal. Scholarship applications are reviewed by independent and voluntary selection committees, which also decide on the allocation of scholarships. Selection is based on subject-related criteria.

DAAD scholarships do not have to be paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment (currently, for example,  € 934 for graduates and € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students) and a flat-rate travel allowance. In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance . Depending on scholarship programme, here are also additional benefits such as a one-off research allowance, family benefits or funds for language courses. The benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are described in the call for applications in the scholarship database .

This scholarship programme offers you the opportunity to complete your doctoral degree in Germany. The scholarships are funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you have above-average qualifications and you completed your Master's degree or Diplom, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor's degree, at the latest by the time the funding period begins.

What can be funded?

The programme provides funding for a doctoral project at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a non-university research institute in Germany. This can be either:

  • an individual project supervised by a university teacher (doctoral supervisor) or
  • participation in a structured doctoral study programme

Duration of the funding

  • Funding is provided for a maximum of four years; the length of the funding period is decided by a selection committee and depends on your project and study plan.
  • Grants are initially awarded for a maximum of one year. Extensions depend on whether the selection committee considers your previous award period to have been successfully completed.
  • Monthly payments of 1,300 euros
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover (see also our important information for scholarship applicants / section F, point 4)
  • Travel allowance
  • annual research allowance. If you come from a DAC country , you will receive a flat rate of € 460 (€ 230 in the fourth year); for all other countries the grant is € 260 (€ 130 in the fourth year).
  • monthly rent subsidy
  • monthly allowance for accompanying family members. Please also read our important information for scholarship applicants / section F, point 3.
  • In the case of a disability or chronic illness: subsidy for additional costs which result from the disability or chronic illness and are not covered by other funding providers: Further information
  • Payment of course fees for an online language course after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter
  • if necessary: Language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the research stay in Germany; the DAAD decides whether to fund the grant holder's participation and for how long depending on language skills and project. If a language course scholarship is granted and the working language at the host institute is German, participation is compulsory.
  • Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the grant period
  • Reimbursement of the fee for a TestDaF or DSH test, which you can take either in your home country after you have received your Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany during your funding period.

An independent selection committee consisting of specialist scientists reviews applications. The selection criteria are: 1. Qualification

  • Academic achievements (grade point average, development of grades)
  • Academic progress
  • Knowledge of the language(s) of instruction or working language(s)
  • If applicable, scholarly achievements after graduation, (e.g. publications, lectures, conference papers)
  • Quality of research proposal and preparation (originality, topicality and relevance of the project, choice of host institution and first contacts)
  • Feasibility and consistency of study plan and schedule
  • Incorporation of project within the overall doctorate (in terms of content and time), if relevant
  • Career prospects: significance of the research project and stay in Germany for further academic, professional and personal development
  • Motivation: academic and personal reasons for wanting to visit Germany, German language skills (if different from working language)

The German doctorate enjoys an outstanding reputation. Germany’s universities, research institutions and companies welcome international researchers and offer excellent opportunities for doctoral students. Structured PhD programmes, for example, often have a strong international orientation with English as the team language.

More than 28,000 graduate students complete a doctorate in Germany every year – far more than in any other member state of the European Union. Every year, roughly 5,800 international scholars are awarded a doctoral degree by a German university.

Background to the PhD Scholarships

In line with one of the founder’s wishes, a special focus of the Gerda Henkel Foundation is support for up-and-coming scholars. Special attention is made when approving grants to enable qualified young researchers of both sexes to conduct scientific work for a limited period of time and in order to improve their academic training. As part of its Ph.D. programme, the Foundation seeks to promote highly-qualified new academic talent. Only those candidates are considered whose study achievements and exam performances show them to be especially gifted and whose Ph.D. theses can be expected to yield well above-average results. At present, each year about 50 scholarships are awarded.

Application

Which documents do I have to submit for funding if I have already started my doctorate? Please submit the same documents as for a standard doctorate grant.

Can I apply for funding for the completion of my doctorate ("final scholarship")? No, the Foundation will not grant scholarships for the final completion of Ph.D. projects. Which certifications should be submitted when I am applying for a PhD scholarship? Please send in certificate(s) of the university degree qualifying for PhD studies (or seminar attendance certificates for direct doctorates). Please send us copies, references do not have to be attested. Can I apply with a 1.5 grade or does the grade have to be better than 1.5? We will check any applications with degrees obtained outside Germany before deciding whether to put them through into the next stage.

If you were 25 when you obtained your master degree, you could apply for doctoral funding at the age of 35, for example. Exceptions will be made to take the following situations into account: night school, bringing up children, military or civil service, work experience and other exceptional circumstances. If there are no extenuating circumstances, applications from those older than 28 cannot be accepted.

Are there any interviews? Can I present my subject to the Foundation in person? No, decisions are based solely on the application submitted.

Can I ask when the Foundation’s quarterly committee meetings are held? No, the Foundation does not provide any information about when the committees meet to assess applications. Once all necessary documents have been submitted (incl. reference), you should expect to wait approximately six months for our decision.

Can I reapply if my application has already been refused? Yes, a second application is possible. However, all the documents must be submitted again.

Questions regarding grants in general

What should I do once I have received the letter of approval? Please let us know by postmail whether you accept the grant and the terms of appropriation. If you do accept, please also supply your current bank details and include when you wish payments to start. Please note that all credit transfers and standing orders are being switched over to the pan-European SEPA system. Instead of a bank sort code and account number, the Foundation requires the IBAN and BIC details. You will find the corresponding information on your account statement and possibly on your bank card.

What are my obligations if I accept the funding? You must inform the Foundation of any changes which have a bearing on the payment of the grant or the amount paid. Teaching positions and other employment must be agreed with the Foundation if they exceed an average of 5 hours a week.

Can I work during the grant period? Yes, as long as the employment does not exceed an average of five hours a week.

How should references be made to the Foundation in my work? We ask that the Foundation be mentioned in any publications that arise from the funded project. The Foundation should also be included in the imprint of any publications for which publishing aid was supplied. For other media, such as conference posters or flyers, please use the logo available on our website. Please also mention the Foundation at events and in any contact with journalists (e.g. via your university’s press office), including in any press releases.

Can the grant or parts thereof be used for other purposes? No. The grant is only to be used for the purposes detailed in the letter of approval.

Can grants be transferred to overseas accounts? Yes. Please supply your SWIFT/BIC code and IBAN. We would however prefer to make transfers to a German account.

Do I have to take out insurance if I am awarded a grant or does the Foundation cover those costs? As grant recipients are not technically employed by the Foundation, national insurance contributions are not paid. The Foundation recommends that all grant recipients take out medical insurance. No additional funding is available for these costs.

What kind of information about my bank account do I have to submit? Please note that all credit transfers and standing orders are being switched over to the pan-European SEPA system. Instead of a bank sort code and account number, the Foundation requires the IBAN and BIC details. You will find the corresponding information on your account statement and possibly on your bank card. Please send us these details or submit them with your next invoice.

Do original receipts have to be sent? Generally yes. Should third parties need the originals for billing purposes (e.g. university offices), please submit copies and ensure that the originals are held for at least ten years in case they need to be checked.

Will my family’s costs be reimbursed for research trips? No. These must be covered by the grant recipient.

Graduate School Marshal Takes Community-Engaged Approach to Scholarship

Graduate School marshal Andrew Ridgeway , a doctoral student and graduate teaching assistant in the College of Arts and Sciences’ composition and cultural rhetoric program (CCR), is no stranger to academic honors. In 2022, he won the prestigious Mary Hatch Marshall Essay Award and was one of nine graduate students to receive the Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work .

Ridgeway has also served as graduate research assistant for the Engaged Humanities Network (EHN) and received a $10,000 grant from Humanities New York to help high school students at the North Side Learning Center create a speech and debate team. Those students went on to successfully compete in public forum debate tournaments, Model United Nations and New York State History Day .

A native of Boise, Idaho, Ridgeway received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Boise State University and a master’s degree in literature from the University of Vermont. He says he chose Syracuse University for doctoral studies because of the unique community engagement emphasis of the composition and cultural rhetoric program.

Ridgeway recently discussed his experiences here, his passion for community-engaged scholarship and his plans after graduation.

Syracuse has one of the best composition programs in the country and it has a really unique record of students and faculty do ing public – facing research work . When I visited, every faculty member I spoke to could draw a line from their research to a project in the community. I was really impressed at the extent to which research and scholarship is tie d to practical application s . Public humanities projects appeal to me and I wanted to be part of t he work people in my depa rtment do to serve the ir communit ies . The CCR program really put s that community -facing work front and center.

The intellectual freedom and the extent of support that I’ve received for the kind of work I’ve wanted to do. I’ve had full support and encouragement for my ideas and that has opened doors for me, truly enriching my experience.

My focus blends digital rhetoric and classical rhetoric to examine how misinformation and conspiracy theories circulate on social media. That’s not a combination most people would think of but I’m really fortunate that I found a community of people who have encouraged me to pursue that.

What I love about rhetoric more generally is that it’s so open-ended and there is so much room to explore, yet it also incorporates ideas from 2,000 years ago. Anything can be rhetorical, so I’m always finding new things to write about.

person smiling

Andrew Ridgeway

Brice Nordquist [ associate professor of writing studies, rhetoric and composition, Dean’s Professor of Community Engagement and EHN founder and director] works very hard to create connections and opportunities for graduate students, faculty and members of the Syracuse community. Brice taught me the importance of having a participatory model of community-driven humanities engagement. The emphasis always has to be on creating a mutually beneficial partnership between the community and the University, where both are bringing different resources and knowledge to the table.

My EHN work with the speech and debate team at the North Side Learning Center was an incredible learning experience for me because the students set the agenda, ran the meetings and made the hiring decisions. They did a lot of the recruiting, too. I handled the administrative stuff and helped them with their speeches, but it was their team from the beginning. I’m really honored they approached me and invited me to be part of that project.

I know that I want my career to be in academia. I’m applying for a range of positions, including postdoctoral roles, assistant professor positions and director of writing center positions. There are lots of different avenues for this type of degree. I’m a person who has always been interested in everything, so the hard part will be choosing.

It’s hard to put it into words.

I think of Syracuse as a community that I’m part of, that I care about and am invested in, and I want it to succeed. I’m so honored that my work is being recognized by the community in this way, and I’m also humbled because there are so many graduate students who are doing incredible work at Syracuse. I’m just blown away by their projects and the quality of their research. The things my colleagues are doing are going to make a huge difference in the world. So, when I see all the incredible work they’re doing, being selected class marshal is a huge and unexpected honor.

Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael today welcomed four new awardees to a PhD scholarship program funded by the State Government through the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA).

The recipients recognised by Minister Michael join a cohort of talented research students working across WA’s universities to support the future of the State’s mining industry.

Emad Al-Hemyari has been awarded the 2024 MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship, named in honour of pioneering Western Australian mining educator Professor Odwyn Jones AO.

Emad is investigating how sound waves and AI can visualise geology below the surface in real-time, making it easier for miners to discover and target hidden ore bodies.

Yamini Kannappan has been awarded the 2024 MRIWA PhD Scholarship for Women to support her work on developing cost-effective and environmentally friendly methods for extracting rare earth elements from low-grade host rocks.

Due to the exceptional quality of applications received this year, MRIWA has awarded additional PhD Scholarships to Sistine Sun , for her work on the impact of CO 2 emissions reduction targets on the WA mining industry, and to Muzammil Khan for his research into technologies supporting low-carbon steel production.
