The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) currently offers Ph.D admissions to students with a qualifying Master’s (M.Tech or M.E or MS) or Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech or B.E) in the relevant field. In order to attract fresh and talented students with bachelor’s degrees, many institutions, including IITs in the country, have started various Dual Degree programmes such as MS(R) + Ph.D and M.Tech + Ph.D, etc. Such Dual Degree programmes are well received by various industries and educational institutions in the recruitment of their faculty in comparison with a candidate having a Ph.D degree directly after a B.Tech or B.E degree. Many departments of IIT Guwahati have been successfully running the above Dual Degree programmes. In view of the various advantages of the above Dual Degree programmes, the department of mechanical engineering has introduced a Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme with five specialisations in M.Tech to students having a B.Tech or B.E as their qualifying degree. The proposed dual degree programme is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020), with a provision for exiting the programme with a M.Tech degree.

Rules and Regulations of Department of Mechanical Engineering

1) Department of Mechanical Engineering offers five specializations to the students of Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) to obtain their M.Tech degree in (a) Machine Design, (b) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, (c) Manufacturing Science and Engineering, (d) Aerodynamics and Propulsion, and (e) Computational Mechanics. This programme is offered only to students who have B. Tech or B.E in relevant branches of Mechanical Engineering and who would like to pursue both M.Tech and PhD degrees in the department of mechanical engineering at IIT Guwahati.

2) The Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme offered by the department (ME) shall be governed by the Master’s + Ph.D degree ordinance of the institute.

3) Students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme are admitted in ME department only in the Regular Category in every July session of the year. A student seeking admission to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme should have a valid GATE Score. Admissions for these students shall follow the admission rules of the institute for regular Ph.D candidates.

4) At the time of filing the application against the institute’s PhD admissions’ advertisement (July session), a candidate needs to opt for the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme. Candidates who have not opted for this programme and apply directly to the PhD programme are not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree. Similarly, candidates (with B.Tech or B.E as qualifying degree) who apply for PhD admissions in the December session are also not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree and hence they do not get the M.Tech degree. Such students then can have B.Tech or B. E + Ph.D degrees.

5) A student admitted to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) works on a full-time basis in the institute and receives an assistant-ship from the institute or any other recognized funding agency.

6) Admitted students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme shall follow the ordinances of the Ph.D programme and other rules of the institute.

7) The maximum duration of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme is seven years from the date of admission. After successful completion of the defence examination, the student will be awarded both the M Tech and Ph.D. degrees.

8) Students in the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme must do the prescribed course work for three semesters. The requirements for the course work will be a minimum of 12 PG-level courses with a minimum aggregate of 72 credits spanning over the three semesters. Please refer to Annexure-A for a detailed course structure of the department of mechanical engineering in various specializations. After successful completion of the prescribed course, the students are permitted to begin their Ph.D work as per the ordinance of the institute. After successful completion of the Ph.D, a student will also be awarded M.Tech degree in the specialization in which he/she does the prescribed course work as mentioned in the Annexure-B.

9) Exit Policy from the Dual degree programme and award of M.Tech degree. Awarding Master’s degree only: A student can discontinue the Dual degree program and leave the institute with M.Tech degree as per the Master’s + Ph.D ordinances which is as follows: After successful completion of the course work, comprehensive examination, and SOAS by the student, should the Doctoral Committee (DC) feel that the progress of the student is not satisfactory at the time of the first annual progress review, the DC may recommend the submission of a master's thesis, suggesting the volume of work to be completed for the master’s degree. The student will submit the suggested master's thesis and defend the same. The procedure for the submission of a master's thesis and the conduct of an oral examination are as per the relevant clauses of MTech/MDes/MS Ordinances. In that case, the student will receive only the master’s degree as per the enrollment. The department invokes this option only in the rarest of rare cases.

M Tech/ M Tech + PhD Dual Degree Program in Space Engineering

In today’s world, Space is not just about human curiosity in knowing what’s beyond. Space has turned out to be a frontier essential to address a plethora of current issues as well as future prosperity. It includes study and prediction of climate change, communication, navigation, defense, security, survey, agriculture, environment, ecology, and astronomy. It is essential to develop technology and trained human resources to meet the enormous requirement in this sector both in government and private sectors. The students trained in UG/PG degrees in other disciplines have the basic foundation but fall short of the specialized skills required to carry out research in the domain of Space Sciences and Engineering.

  • This program is designed to provide fundamental concepts and specialization in Space Systems Engineering, Operations and Techniques.
  • Applicants from basic engineering fields will gain expertise in the domain of space sciences and engineering.
  • This program is designed to cater for job aspirants in India’s emerging space industry, geo-spatial and defense sectors.

Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ): Four-year Bachelor’s degree or five-year integrated degree (with first division as defined by the awarding Institute/ University for Indian applicants and equivalent to International applicants, as assessed by the Institute) in Electronics and Communication/ Electronics/ Engineering Physics / Aerospace, or M.Sc. in Physics/ Electronics/ Atmospheric science . 

Relaxation as per GoI norms in qualifying degree is applicable for SC and ST category applicants.

Qualifying Examination (QE):

(a) International students: Valid score of TOEFL or IELTS.

(b) Indian students: Valid GATE qualification in Aerospace Engineering/Electronics and Communication Engineering/ Physics/ Engineering Sciences (Engineering Mathematics + Fluid Mechanics/Material Science/ Thermodynamics/ Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences)

Categories of Admission:

(a) International Students:  

  • International self-financed (ISF) students; 
  • International students sponsored by non-government organizations or by a reputed industry (ISW); 
  • International students sponsored by foreign government or its organizations or through mutual collaborative programs of India with other countries (GSW)

(b) Indian Students: 

  • TA: Teaching Assistantship (TA) under this category on Full Time basis.
  • SW: Excellent eligible applicants sponsored by a reputed Industry or R & D Organization with minimum work experience of two years, under Sponsored category (SW) as Full-Time.
  • DF: Applicants from the Defense Forces under this category.
  • IS: Institute staff members of IIT Indore on Part-time basis. 

Candidates of SW, DF and IS categories will not be provided any scholarship.

5 Year Integrated MTech+PhD Computer Science is a four-year degree in computer science engineering that enable students to understand the principles and practices of science and technology, attain problem-solving skills, and constantly learn multidisciplinary concepts. Curriculum Details

School of Computer Science Engineering and Technology has developed a comprehensive curriculum for the 5 Year Integrated MTech+PhD programmes that equips the students with skills on complex problem solving, design of computing systems, critical thinking, empirical and quantitative analysis, communication, teamwork, social & personal responsibility.

Program Core Courses: The core courses build a solid foundation of advanced concepts on data structures, algorithms, network systems, operating systems, software engineering, databases and their practical skills that are essential for technology building and implementation.

  • Life Skills: Life skills is offered in the 1st semester to cultivate the lifelong learning skills.
  • Humanity: It consists of research practices, seminar, and ethics course.
  • Entrepreneurship: A course on entrepreneurship is offered to inculcate the entrepreneurial skills amongst the students

Specialisations

Every Specialisation comprises two core courses and three elective courses. It also has a specialisation-oriented capstone Course and an Internship. Specialisations are chosen at the time of admissions.

  • Specialisation Core Courses: Students are offered two specialisation core courses.
  • Specialisation Electives: Students must choose three specialisation electives.

Internships/Thesis Dissertation (20 Credits)– Two internships are part of the curriculum. The first internship is available in the 3rd semester, which can be an alternative of the capstone project. Capstone Design, and Capstone Project are cutting edge courses to prepare the students for industry, and further research. The second internship is done in the final semester, the outcome of which is a thesis dissertation report. There is also one flexible option for the students to spend one full year in an Industry internship in the final year of study.

Apple iMac Design & Multi-Media Lab

It is a futuristic 32 node high-end lab with state-of-the-art Apple machines. As per international standards, the 27-inch monitors, using the best retina display, are useful for any visual effect with immersive experience. Processor Speed, Magic Mouse and Magic keyboard make the experience unforgettable.

The lab is used for running courses that require high-end graphics capabilities including 3D graphics and video editing capabilities. It is specifically used for activities and projects related to gaming, design, multimedia, modern art, and media production. High configuration of the machines help run resource-hungry applications related to research requiring large scale simulations and experimentation.

Programming Lab

The Lab is used to impart skills of Programming/Coding to first-year students.

Information Management System Lab

The Lab takes care of the curricular requirements in the domain of Information Management, Data Base Management systems and Other Business processing applications.

Cloud Computing Lab

The Lab takes care of the curricular requirements for Cloud Computing and applications.

The Drone Laboratory facilitates the development of various drone technologies and sensing equipment which could be applied to the drones using DJI Mavic AIR QUADCOPTER DRONE, Veerobot F450 AIR QUADCOPTER DRONE and such other.

The laboratory is equipped with various drone platforms: from quad/hexacopters, to pipeline crawlers, to remotely operated underwater vehicles.

Computer Network and Cyber Security Lab

The Lab takes care of the curricular requirements in the domain of Computer Network and Cyber Security Lab on Simulator Tools, including hand on experience with Routers and latest CISCO Switches.

Students use different wireless network components and features to provide network security and to set Firewall Security in windows/ Linux OS.

AR and VR Gaming

The Lab takes care of the curricular requirements in the domain of AR and VR Gaming Labs.

Our Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Media Lab contain some of the most cutting-edge head-mounted displays available today. Students have access to the technology for the development of VR and AR software using the Oculus Go Standalone Virtual Reality Headset, and many others.

Big Data and Machine Learning Lab

The Lab takes care of the curricular requirements in the domain of Big Data Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to analyse large datasets, identify trends, and develop predictive models to solve problems.

Students build and train deep neural networks, build a CNN and apply it to detection and recognition tasks, train test sets, analyse variance for DL applications, use standard techniques and optimisation algorithms, and build neural networks in TensorFlow. Students also build and train RNNs, work with NLP and Word Embeddings, and use HuggingFace tokenisers and transformer models to perform NER.

What is an M.Tech Ph.D degree?

M.Tech Ph.D is an integrated dual degree academic programme that combines two progressive degree courses postgraduate level M.Tech. and doctoral degree Ph.D. M.Tech is the abbreviated name of Master of Technology. Candidates Who have completed 10+2+4 level of technical education such as B.E., B.Arch. and B.Tech. are eligible for enrolling in M.Tech. Ph.D stands for Doctor of Philosophy, it is a higher level degree programme that can be pursued after completion of 10+2+3+2 or 10+2+4 level of academic programmes.

In integrated M.Tech. Ph.D. course, M.Tech programme consists of four-semesters and Ph.D. programme after the completion of the M.Tech programme subject to the minimum grade required. What is M.Tech. Ph.D. full form?

M.Tech. Ph.D stands for Master of Technology Doctor of Philosophy. M.Tech. Ph.D. is an integrated dual degree. M.Tech. Ph.D. is an integrated course of Master of Technology with Doctorate of Philosophy designed for students with scientific vigour for research and theoretical knowledge. It can be pursued after completing B.Tech . M.Tech is a postgraduate engineering degree programme awarded to applicants after fulfilment of two years of education in the engineering field. This degree signifies a specific branch of engineering , Whereas Ph.D. is a doctoral degree with an educational focus. It is usually a three-year duration programme, and aspirants need to accomplish the course within a maximum of five to six years. Although, the course term may differ from one institute to the other.

M.Tech Ph.D Eligibility

Engineering Graduates under the 10+2+4 system are qualified to apply. A minimum of 6 point CGPA or 60 per cent is eligible to apply for the course For reserved category; change may vary in the percentage.

The Age limit should not be more than 28 years. As per govt rules age limit can vary for the reserved category students.

A valid GATE score will be an advantage.

Professional Society Examinations (similar to BE / B.Tech/ B.Arch .) approved by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE

Applicants whose final results are expected can also apply as per screening criteria.

Candidates shortlisted for the different positions are required to appear for an interview for selection at the assigned centres.

Final selection is based on the overall performance of the candidate along with his or academic performance in the interview.

An aspirant who pursues MTech. Ph.D needs to have a lot of concern and passion for the topic. The candidates should also be good with performing in-depth research and colluding the conclusions of research led by them. Provide details of all the marks/GPA of all examinations taken. If GPA is out of ten, multiply by ten.

Top M.Tech Ph.D Entrance Examinations

CSIR-UGC NET: CSIR UGC NET stands for Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Union Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. It is a national level examination conducted by NTA. It is conducted twice a year in online mode only. The examination is conducted to select eligible candidates for Junior Research Fellowship and provide them appointment as lecturers in universities and colleges in India.

GATE: GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is organised by IIT Kharagpur. Those who want to take the examination are required to check for notifications and send applications through the official website of the IIT Kharagpur. It is conducted for providing admissions in postgraduate level engineering and architectural programmes.

JEST: JEST stands for Joint Entrance Screening Test. The organising body of JEST is the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It is conducted to provide admissions in PhD or integrated PhD programmes in physics, theoretical computer science, computational biology or neuroscience. It is recognised by the Science and Engineering Research Board as the National Eligibility Test (NET).

GPAT: GPAT stands for Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test. It is a national level entrance examination conducted to provide admissions in M.Pharm. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency. The duration of the examination is three hours. The examination is conducted in online mode.

The other entrance examinations are DBT JRF and NBHM Screening Test.

M.Tech. Ph.D. Cut off

A cut-off is the minimum eligibility criteria set by academic authorities to provide admissions in colleges to eligible candidates who apply for enrolment in academic courses based on their performance in the previously passing examination or in the entrance examination. Those who score more or equivalent to the announced cut off are eligible for further enrolling in the academic programme by completing the further steps involved in the admission process.

M.Tech Ph.D Course Structure

M.Tech PhD is a two+three years full-time course divided into two parts. During the first three academic years, students must complete:

Ten lecture courses where each course lasts one semester.

A short course

A laboratory rotation course

Two short research projects

An extended research project

Research Methodology course programme ( This course programme is assessed with a Pass or Fail basis)

The research projects( Project A and Project B) last for seven-eight weeks. The two projects are carried out during the second semester of the first year. Both projects are done under different administrators. During the third semester, students start with the second project(Project C). The project must be completed by the third semester.

M.Tech. P.hD. students will receive course credits associated with the course structure. The credits may vary from one institution to another. However, the details of the credit for most institutions are as follows:

Credit for the ten lecture courses (40 credits)

Credit for the one short course (2 credits)

Credit for Lab rotation course (10 credits)

Credit for projects- project A and Projects B (24 credits)

Credit for M.Tech Project (24 credits)

The overall credit validation is calculated for 100 credit marks.

Hence, by completing these courses and the projects during the academic year and achieving 75 credits, excluding the M.Tech project credits, students are considered eligible to register for the Doctoral programme.

M.Tech Research Project:

The M.Tech project starts during the second semester of the second academic year. The M.tech Research project is a full-time research project. The M.Tech research project can either be a continuation of the short-term projects- Project A, Project B, or can be a completely new project.

The M.Tech project is done in consultation with M.Tech.-Ph.D. supervisors. Besides, students are expected to complete all their course requirements during the second and third year of their course programme. During the coursework various projects are done but there will be variation depending on the institute, the area or the stream of studies.

There are vast career options for the Mtech PhD Course. One can work as a Researcher in Government Research Institutes such as Indian institute of sciences and research, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre or DRDO. Aerospace Engineering Sciences & ME-EM Dual Degrees

Dual Degree Requirements

The dual degree consists of 45 total credit hours:

  • 21 credit hours from the Engineering Management Program (EMP)
  • 24 credit hours from the Aerospace Engineering Program*

*The 24 credits required are at the discretion of the Aerospace department and may not need to all come from ASEN coursework.  Please consult the Aerospace department to confirm requirements for the degree of interest.

The EMP requirements as part of the dual degree are:

Current Requirements (starting Fall 2022)

  • EMEN 5015: Engineering Communication (Previously EMEN 5830: Special Topics)
  • EMEN 5020: Finance for Engineering Managers
  • EMEN 5030: Project Management   OR EMEN 5405: Fundamentals of Systems Engineering
  • EMEN 5050: Leading Oneself
  • Three EMEN elective courses; EMEN 5000 does not count towards the Engineering Management degree requirements

When completing the ME Engineering Management degree candidacy application for graduation, in addition to the 21 EMEN credit hours, students will need to include 9 Aerospace Engineering credit hours to make the 30 total credit hours required to complete the ME Engineering Management degree.

Olga Bannova, PhD, Lic. Eng. Director, SICSA MS-Space Architecture Program Director Research Professor

Professor Bannova, an alumna of the University of Houston, conducts research and design studies that address a variety of topics, including: planning analyses for a broad range of space vehicles, habitats and systems; inflatable hydroponics laboratory and logistic modules; special design influences and requirements for different gravity conditions in space; and habitat concepts for extreme environments on Earth. She is a corresponding member of International Academy of Astronautics, IAC Space and Society Symposiums coordinator, senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Chair of the AIAA Space Architecture Technical Committee, and an elected member of the ASCE’s Executive Committee on Space Engineering and Construction. She recently received 2019 Outstanding Technical Contribution Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Aerospace Division. Bannova earned her PhD from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, in 2016, and Master in Architecture and M.S. in Space Architecture degrees from the University of Houston in 2001 and 2005. She is an author of books "Space Architecture Education for engineers and Architects (Springer,2016) and "Space Architecture: Human Habitats beyond Planet Earth" (DOM Publishers, 2021). Prior to arrival to Houston she worked as a professional architect in Moscow, Russia, on industrial, office, and healthcare projects. Several of her designs have been built in Moscow city, Moscow and Leningrad regions.

Larry Bell

Larry Bell, AIAA, ASCE Director Emeritus, SICSA Space Architecture Endowed Professor

Bell joined the UH faculty in 1978, founded the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) at the University of Houston in 1987, and served as the director of SICSA for almost 30 years. He took SICSA to new heights by both defining and leading the field of space architecture. Bell also established the world’s only master’s degree in space architecture at UH. Professor Bell co-founded Space Industries International (SII) in 1982. The company grew to employ more than 8,000 people as a result of various mergers and acquisitions and became Veridian, a diversified advanced technology company that serves aerospace, defense and automotive industries. Veridian was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (VNX), and was purchased by General Dynamics in 2003 for $1.5 billion. He is an Fellow Emeritus of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Fellow of the prestigious Explorers Club. He has received numerous awards, including the Space Pioneer Award from Kyushu Sanyo University in Japan and the two highest honors awarded by the Federation of Astronautics and Cosmonautics of the former Soviet Union for his contributions to international space development.

Bonnie J. Dunbar

Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, Ph.D., NAE Chair, SICSA External Advisory Committee and Adjunct Faculty Former NASA Astronaut

Professor Dunbar, an alumna of the University of Houston and former NASA astronaut, joined the faculty of the UH Cullen College of Engineering in 2013. Dunbar accepted her first corporate position in 1973 as a systems analyst at the Boeing Company. She then became a senior production operations research engineer with Rockwell International Space Division, where she helped develop equipment and processes for manufacturing the thermal protection system for the Space Shuttle. For her work, she was named Rockwell Engineer of the Year. As a NASA mission specialist astronaut and veteran of five space flights, Dunbar logged over 1,208 hours (50 days) in space. Following her flight career, Dunbar served as the president and CEO of the Museum of Flight in Seattle from 2005 to 2010. Since then, she has been devoted to inspiring young people all over the world to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers. Dunbar earned her B.S. and M.S. in ceramic engineering from the University of Washington in 1971 and 1975, respectively, as well as her Ph.D. in mechanical/biomedical engineering from the University of Houston in 1983. Dunbar is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow and Life member of the American Ceramic Society, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, an elected member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2002.

Larry Toups Adjunct Associate Professor Space Architecture Graduate Program

Larry Toups is currently in the Exploration Mission Planning Office at Johnson Space Center supporting the agency’s Evolvable Mars Campaign work. He joined NASA in 1994 and worked in the International Space Station (ISS) Program Office.  From 1998-2006 Mr. Toups assumed the role of Habitability Systems Lead in the ISS Vehicle Office. Prior joining NASA Larry was a Senior Engineer with Lockheed Engineering and Sciences Company at Johnson Space Center. In this role, he provided technical support for JSC’s New Initiatives Office in the area of Systems Engineering of habitats and planetary systems and contributed to numerous NASA studies.  Mr. Toups assumed the position of Adjunct Professor at Chalmers University, Sweden in addition to his NASA responsibilities.  In this role he has been involved with research related to sustainability of terrestrial homes of the future and the linkage of that research to deep space habitation. Larry Toups earned a BArch degree and after practicing architecture for 14 years, a Master’s Degree from the University of Houston.

Valery Aksamentov

Dr. Aksamentov received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering at the Moscow Aviation Institute with highest honors for academic work. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1987 he was hired as a Senior Research Fellow and faculty member in the College of Cosmonautics and Automatic Flight Vehicles. Dr. Aksamentov has a very distinguished career with both the former Soviet – now Russian and US space programs. Dr. Aksamentov has authored and co-authored more than 40 publications in the U.S. and Russia, including Russian Space Industry Standard for Calculations of Spacecraft External Heat Fluxes, and patented invention. He holds the Gagarin Diploma, one of the highest honors awarded by Russia's leading professional aeronautics and cosmonautics society, which he received for contributions to international cooperation in space. Dr. Aksamentov was a visiting professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Vittorio Netti

Vittorio Netti, MS-SA Adjunct Professor Axiom Space Space Architecture Graduate Program

Vittorio Netti is a Ph.D. candidate in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Bari, he also holds an M.Sc in Space Architecture, from SICSA, University of Houston. Where he teaches validation and testing of Space Habitats. He has published more than 30 scientific publications and books on the topics of Space Architecture, System Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering.  Vittorio is also a sub-committee chair for the Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC) for the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His fields of research are focused on Autonomous planetary construction with In Situ Resources (ISRU) and Human-robotic collaboration in space operations. Vittorio holds the role of Senior technical advisor at Astradyne, a company specializing in the development of deployable space structures, and project Engineer in Crew System at Axiom Space working on the first commercial Space Station. He filled the commander role at Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) during the Space Medicine OPerations mission (SMOPS) and participated in different analog and research field missions. He also worked as a consultant for different firms, research entities, and aerospace companies such as Search+, Hassell, Boeing, Roboze, and Sierra Space, and was part of space agency frameworks for NASA and ESA.

Get to know Michael Ferrer, MSIM student

After spending some time in the defense IT industry, Michael Ferrer decided to return to school for his MSIM degree to gain skills in areas such as data visualization and advance his career. Outside of his studies, Ferrer is a competitive ballroom dancer and member of the Illinois Army National Guard.

Why did you decide to pursue an IM degree?

Before entering the MSIM program, I worked for six years at a network operations center. I enjoyed my time there, but I felt a bit stagnant in my professional growth. I needed a significant change in my life to break that cycle, so when the opportunity to pursue an MSIM degree presented itself, I took the leap and applied.

Why did you choose the iSchool at Illinois?

I earned my bachelor's degree in computer science from Illinois State University in Bloomington, which is about an hour from Urbana-Champaign. Since I'm well acquainted with central Illinois, I welcomed the chance to pursue my graduate education in a familiar environment. I also chose the University of Illinois because of its amazing academic reputation nationally and abroad. I have found the faculty and staff at the iSchool to be very helpful, and while there are a lot of students on campus, my learning environment feels just right with classes that are not too empty or full.

What particular IM topics interest you the most?

I really like classes that leverage tools for data visualization. We get to use tools like Microsoft PowerBI and Salesforce Tableau, which are used in industry to interpret and visualize data into something that clients/customers will understand. I also enjoy classes that cover interdisciplinary concepts, touching on data analytics but also delving into business-related principles and lessons learned from case studies.

What do you do outside of class?

Outside of class, I am primarily a part of Illini DanceSport, which is the university's competitive ballroom dance student organization. I attend many social dance events too, such as salsa, bachata, swing dance, etc. I also serve part time in the military through the Illinois Army National Guard. The organization lets me fulfill my dream of being a soldier, while letting me pursue my civilian education.

What career plans or goals do you have?

As of right now, my plan is to return to St. Louis, Missouri, after completing the MSIM program to pursue a higher-level position at my old workplace. However, I am also open to other opportunities as they present themselves.
