2019 O Level English Examination Question

I was the last speaker to deliver my speech in the room. Our school team sat just a meter or so away, so nervous I could physically feel anxiety radiating from them. Every painful hour of training we submitted ourselves to was for this moment. So far, it had gone well: we had trounced so many of the so-called elite debate teams, cementing our status as the underdog. No one expected a team of seemingly-quiet girls to have come this far, but here we were, in the finals, against a team that had won the championship for ten years in a row. 

Our coach held our hands tightly as we walked towards the lecture theatre where the results would be announced, reassuring us that we did well, and that accomplishing a guaranteed silver medal was still good enough. However, secretly in our heart of hearts, we hoped we would take the gold. Otherwise, what was all that training for?

I was so nervous I kept quiet, feeling the sweat trickle down the back of the school’s formal uniform that was set apart for only students who participate in the most prestigious competitions. My tie suddenly felt tight and uncomfortable, but I did not dare to loosen it and sully our image. Walking into the blessed air-conditioning of the lecture theatre, we sat down and awaited our fate. Unfortunately, we were seated next to our competitors, who kept pointing at us and laughing condescendingly, as if they were expecting the win.

“And the winner of the Singapore Debating Championships is…”

He trailed off into silence but I swore you could hear our collective hearts pounding in sheer anxiety. 

When he cried out our school name, I could not even react. It was like an absolute dream when everyone started bursting into tears of joy, while I stared, stunned, until I finally realised what happened. We won. The underdogs won. We, the quiet, unassuming team that had just barely made it to this high-level division via the qualifiers won. Our competitors looked disgusted and refused to shake our hands, choosing instead to cast us looks of disdain.

It was then my team and I stepped forward with courage we never knew we had, and turned around to face our opponents.

“You will display proper gentlemanly behaviour and sportsmanship, or you will forever be known as bad losers,”

I managed to say, as politely as I could, even though I wanted to scream inside me. Staring them directly in the eye even though I was at least a head shorter than them, I refused to break my gaze.  

Finally, they looked away, then embarrassedly stuck out their hands.

That was when I felt the proudest of myself and of my team. It was not the gold medal that went around our necks, not the championship trophy that we got to bring home, but the act of standing up against people who truly believed we would not make it. We had struggled through so much to make it this far and we deserved that respect. Even though we had to demand it, I still proudly reached out and shook their hands. From that day on, we would not just be known for our debating prowess, but for the fact that even though we seemed like pushovers, we were incredibly strong. Our gold medals shone brightly under the lights, but our faces and spirits shone ever brighter.

Teacher’s Commentary

• Building Tension We knew we were going to have fun with this question! We wanted to build up the tension and have it culminate at the point where we could describe where the writer was at her proudest.
• Championship Setting We picked a championship setting because it was the most relatable setting. We thought of setting it up so that it would seem that we were proudest because our hard work had won us the tournament.
• Competitor vs Home Team  It was important to show the build-up as to how and why we were so proud. So, we developed the contrast between the main team and the competitor’s team.
• The Twist  The climax was not the win as expected, but rather the moment where their characters were tested. Since the main team of the story was described as quiet and unassuming, speaking up against the more arrogant competitor’s team would be a surprise that no one would expect in the story.
• Reflection Finally, it was important to have some reflection as to why that was the proudest moment. This part would differentiate this writing from other students who chose the same 2019 O Level English examination topic. While other students would write about hard work paying off, we would talk about standing up for ourselves.

How to Write Great Essays: ‘O’ Level Model Essays

Do you always find yourself stuck when writing an essay? Does the assignment appear to be too daunting to overcome? Fear not! You possess the ability to tackle this challenge head-on. Read on for step-by-step advice to assist you. Write amazing essays with good grades, always.

Brainstorming

First, let’s start by brainstorming. Generate a plethora of ideas by jotting down your thoughts on the subject. Afterwards, carefully review your brainstormed material. Continue from here and identify the most compelling idea. Ask yourself which ideas captivate you the most and which ideas you can write about naturally. Which ideas allow you to insert a personal touch? In addition, keep in mind the essay’s objective. Do your points you have brainstormed align with the answer to the question posed? If so, you’re ready to proceed.

Thesis Statement

Next, compose a powerful thesis statement. This sentence serves as the core concept of your essay. It expresses your thoughts on the subject matter. Once again, consider the essay’s objective. In addition, regard the thesis statement as part of your engaging introduction. This statement informs your reader about the essay’s content.

Topic Sentences

Now it’s time to outline the ideas that you will be using in your body paragraphs. With solid topic sentences in hand, you must reinforce your main idea with in-depth information, facts, thoughts, and examples. In addition, these supporting points address the question: “Why?” This stage may involve research and further brainstorming. Finally, arrange these points in a logical sequence, according to their significance. Congratulations! You now possess an outline for your essay.

Organisation

On your mark, get set, write! Follow your outline diligently, dedicating each paragraph to a supporting point. Utilise vivid and descriptive words to effectively convey your ideas to the reader. In addition, delve into the details, employing specific information to narrate your story or emphasise your viewpoint. Further, ensure that every element you include remains closely tied to the essay’s main idea, thereby maintaining focus. Finally, seamlessly connect your ideas using appropriate transition words to enhance the flow of your writing.

As you approach the conclusion, wrap it up with finesse. Summarise your entire essay and restate your main idea in a concise and impactful manner.

How to Overcome Common Challenges When Preparing For Your O-Level English: A Comprehensive Guide

Hello everyone! Whether you have just graduated primary school or are in the midst of your secondary school education, I am sure you already know that English is one of the most important subjects to score well in at the O Levels. After all, the grade you achieve for O Level English contributes to your L1R5 or L1R4 score as your first language (L1)—you cannot replace that L1 score with any other subject except for Higher Mother Tongue (and not everyone is skilled enough to excel in Higher MT). Hence, it is definitely essential to prioritise mastering O Level English as you prepare for your second national examination! Today, let’s go through three essential tips on how to overcome common challenges faced when you are preparing for—and later sitting for—your O Level English papers.

1. Be Familiar with the O Level English Syllabus

The O Level English Language paper as a whole can be overwhelming and challenging for most students because of the sheer number of components—as well as the large variety of possible question types that can be tested within each component—that you can end up being tested on. It is thus essential that you are very familiar with the four O Level English papers that you will need to sit for:

As seen from the above table, there are a lot of components you need to prepare for, and master, before sitting for your O Level English paper! In order to effectively master all these components, you must thus first be familiar with each of them, and what could be possibly tested.

In particular, Paper 1 and Paper 2 hold the highest weightage . Both also contain sections which can test you on a large variety of question types which you must be adequately prepared to answer, as it will be impossible to predict which question type will arise. For each of the components, we have listed down the possible question types as well as a link to a blogpost where you can read up more on these question types should you wish to do so:

It can take time to familiarise yourself with these components, so be patient with yourself and remember that consistency is key. Make time to constantly review each of the O Level English components—as well as what the variable question types that you can be tested on are—and you will be one step closer to mastering O Level English! 🙂

2. Manage Your Time Well — BEFORE and DURING the Exam Period!

It goes without saying that being a secondary school student is not easy. You have to juggle the revision of 7—10 subjects (depending on your subject combination), your extra-curricular responsibilities, making time for family and friends, as well as your own leisure so you do not burn out. This is a lot for anyone to have on their plate, and it is easy to become overwhelmed or experience a lack time for certain aspects of your life if you do not have proper time management.

So before any examination period , make sure you manage your time well. Here are some tips to consider:

• Get yourself a diary or scheduler to write down your existing commitments and plan out each week. You may also jot down what you wish to spend your remaining time on. For instance, I will jot down that I have Swimming CCA on Monday and Wednesday afternoons (3-6pm), and tuition classes on Thursday and Friday afternoons (3-6pm). In the remaining time I have in a week, I can schedule various revision sessions for my different subjects. Perhaps I will schedule an hour of English revision every Thursday night (8-9pm) to make sure I do not lose touch with the O Level English syllabus.
• Be realistic with your time management . It is natural to be ambitious when we are setting goals for ourselves. However, sometimes it is just not feasible that we can squeeze in the revision of the entire English syllabus in 3 hours on a weeknight—and we end up feeling overwhelmed and unable to revise properly as a result. A more realistic goal could be to plan to revise just two components of the English syllabus (e.g. perhaps Editing and Visual Text Comprehension) during that same time period instead!
• Set focused, specific goals as you plan your time . To add on to the previous point, keep your goals focused and specific so that they seem less daunting and more manageable for yourself. For instance, instead of simply jotting down “Revise English” for Tuesday night (8-10pm), jot down “Complete a Narrative Comprehension practise and mark it!” This will make your goals seem more doable and also provide you with a clear task to focus on. I promise you that if you do this, you’ll feel very accomplished every time you complete and tick off each specific goal on your to-do list! 🙂

Now, what should you do to manage your time during examinations ? Do consider the following tips:

• Before every exam , be aware of the time given and plan out how you wish to use the time . For instance, the O Level English Paper 1 (Writing) lasts 1 hour 50minutes and has three sections: Editing, Situational Writing, and Continuous Writing. If I know that I am strong and quick at completing Editing and Situational Writing, but require more planning and thinking time for Continuous Writing, I may plan to spend 10 minutes on Editing, 40 minutes on Situational Writing, 55 minutes on Continuous Writing, and the last 5 minutes on checking. Going in with a plan of how you want to use the given time in examinations will be extremely useful and makes sure you do not run out of time for each component!
• Don’t linger on components or questions which you feel very stuck on . For instance, the O Level English Paper 2 (Comprehension) has a large number of questions you need to tackle. When students feel stumped by a difficult question, they may end up wasting a lot of time on it. As such, they end up with reduced time to complete the other more manageable questions, and losing precious marks they could have easily obtained in the process. This is why some students end up being unable to finish the Comprehension paper at times. So remember to move on quickly if you find yourself stuck—you can always return to the challenging question when you have completed the other questions. A good guide is to move on from a hard question if you have been thinking about it for 5 minutes and are still unable to find an answer. If you are afraid that you might forget about these questions, you may want to circle or put a star next to the question number to remind yourself to come back to these questions when you have completed the rest.

3. Grow a Bank of Exam Strategies to Use!

Given that there are so many components to O Level English, develop a bank of exam strategies to use over your secondary school education. Here is just a list of a few that our english tutors Singapore teach at Lil’ but Mighty’s O Level English Tuition:

• In Paper 1: Writing (Section A: Editing), write down the acronym SPCA W ill S ave T he V ery P oor C ats so you can keep track of the different editing errors that may arise in the text. Have a look at this blogpost for an explanation of how you can use the SPCA acronym and other useful editing tips!
• In Paper 1: Writing (Section B: Situational Writing), always analyse the Situational Writing question, label the task requirements so you can keep track of them, and plan out an outline using these task requirements.
• In Paper 1: Writing (Section C: Continuous Writing), annotate on the essay question so you can identify the essay type and understand the key terms thoroughly. This will prevent you from writing out of point!
• In Paper 2: Comprehension, always label the question types for yourself before you attempt them. This will help you understand the question requirements and ensure you answer them accurately. For instance, a literal question tells you that the answer can be found directly in the passage, while an inferential question tells you that the answer must be deduced (and is not explicitly stated) in the passage. This list is in no way exhaustive, but just provides an overview of some of the most important exam strategies that can be used to tackle O Level English. Unlike the PSLE where students are exposed primarily to writing stories , the O Level / G3 English syllabus at secondary school expects students to be proficient in various text types or text genres. Text types refer to different styles of presenting information, classified based on the intent or purpose of the communicator. O Level / G3 English assesses a range of text types, including personal recounts, descriptive essays, expositions  ( argumentative and discursive essays), reflective essays, as well as hybrid or mixed genres.

2. Text Types Tested at O Level / G3 English Exam Essay Writing

2.1 personal recount.

A personal recount is a storytelling form where writers share real-life experiences they have personally lived through. It involves the chronological retelling of a series of events, adopting a first-person perspective and using past tense. Show not tell is also used to craft a vivid, sensory experience for the reader.

A personal recount also delves into the writer’s emotions, thoughts, and reflections throughout the experience. This introspective element adds depth to the storytelling, allowing readers to connect on a personal level and gain insights into the writer’s perspective. The primary aim is to create vivid mental images in the reader’s mind, transporting them to the depicted scene or experience.

A descriptive essay does not necessarily require a fixed structure. Instead, it focuses primarily on capturing the essence of the topic through a wide array of descriptive language techniques. Examples of descriptive language techniques include the use of adjectives, adverbs, metaphors, similes, personification, and other literary devices to evoke specific sensory experiences. These descriptions can be organised logically or chronologically, depending on the writer’s intent. The result is a vivid, immersive portrayal that captivates the reader’s imagination.

Descriptive essays in the O Level / G3 English exam also quite commonly come in the form of hybrids .

• What is your idea of a perfect afternoon? Describe what you like to do and how it makes you feel. [O Level 2023]
• Some people enjoy being in a crowded place, while others prefer somewhere quieter with fewer people. Describe your perfect place where you want to relax. [O Level 2022]
• Describe the sights and sounds at a busy shopping mall. Remember to describe some of the people there as well. [O Level 2021]

2.3 Exposition

An expository essay is a type of writing which explains, illustrates, or clarifies a topic such that it becomes clear for the readers. It requires the writer to explain an idea, evaluate evidence, or set forth an argument concerning an idea in a clear and concise manner.

There are two primary sub-types of expository texts: argumentative and discursive.

2.3.1 Argumentative

Argumentative essays are designed to persuade or convince the reader to adopt a specific viewpoint or take a particular course of action. They present a clear argument or thesis, supported by compelling evidence, reasoning, and persuasive language.

The structure of an argumentative essay typically includes an introduction that states the thesis, followed by a presentation of supporting evidence and a conclusion that reinforces the author’s position. It may also provide counter arguments and offer rebuttals to refute these opposing arguments.

• ‘Schools should teach practical skills such as cooking and managing our finances.’ Do you agree? Why or why not? [O Level 2023]
• ‘People today are far too easily persuaded to spend money on things they don’t need.’ Do you agree that advertising has made us wasteful? [O Level 2022]
• ‘A happy person is a healthy person.’ How far would you agree? [O Level 2021]

2.3.2 Discursive

Discursive essays are characterised by their neutral and balanced presentation of information. Unlike an argumentative essay, a discursive piece presents different perspectives on a given topic without necessarily taking a clear stance or arguing for a specific point of view. These texts aim to provide a comprehensive overview by presenting various arguments or ideas related to the subject.

Discursive essays use logical reasoning, evidence, and facts to support each perspective without any criticism or persuasion. They allow readers to develop their own opinions due to its objectivity.

• ‘Young people are changing the world for the better.’ What is your opinion? [O Level 2021]
• ‘People should always tell the truth.’ Do you think there are any situations in which this might not be the best thing to do? Explain your views. [O Level 2017]
