KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review: Yash’s ‘Rocky’ Transitions From ‘Bhai’ To ‘Bhagwan’, But The Atheist In Me Is Also A Critic!

Prashanth neel's 'ambition' overrides his 'story-telling' and that's the biggest issue of his script..

kgf 2 movie review in english essay

Star Cast: Yash, Srinidhi Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj

Director: Prashanth Neel

KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review!

What’s Good: Yash. Yash’s style. Yash’s action. And the thread that joins them all!

What’s Bad: Makers don’t ‘narrate’ the (half-baked) story, they howl in your eardrums!

Loo Break: The tracking rate of decibel/scene is so high that you’ll be forced to take one

Watch or Not?: Did you watch Chapter 1 and loved it? Give this a try as well, you may not love it as much but you’ll live through it

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 168 Minutes

Author Anand Vasiraju’s son Vijayendra (Prakash Raj) continues to tell the infamous Rocky’s ( Yash ) tale to a news-channel editor starting from where it all ended in the first chapter. In his story, we see how Rocky, from ‘bhai’, has now transitioned into ‘bhagwan’ for people around him. Now that he has killed Garuda, it’s Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) and his army who returns to find and kill Rocky.

Adheera isn’t the only obstacle for Rocky to cross but he now is on the radar of India’s Prime Minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon). While Rocky somehow dodges Adheera, it’s the Government that comes in his way of becoming the ‘CEO of India’ (in his own words). In this triple threat match, will there be just one winner? Well, put some cotton in your ears and sit back to know!

K.G.F: Chapter 2 Review

KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

Prashanth Neel’s ‘ambition’ overrides his ‘story-telling’ and that’s the biggest issue of his script. Everything looks extremely cool visually, but the whole argument behind making things cool is weak. It comes with some similar issues as chapter 1 like why is everyone talking so loud with everyone? I wanted to keep a track of how long any scene could be silent but it was so loud, I couldn’t concentrate.

Just to clarify, I don’t mind loudness in films, I’ve loved movies like Master, Rowdy Rathore, Dabangg and likes. But, this one doesn’t just leave your mind numb, but it does the same thing with your ears as well.

Side Bar: A scene censors the word ‘democracy’ changing it to ‘demography’, and I couldn’t help but wonder about the irony of what a democratic society we’re living in.

Bhuvan Gowda’s camerawork elevates the already monumentally mounted action sequences, to a level that’s almost unseen in the Indian film industry. Yash’s car chase sequence with ‘play & pause’ transitions remains the best highlight of the film owing to its breathtaking cinematography and well-synchronised background score by Ravi Basrur.

But the same Class-A cinematography goes against the feel of the film when it rushes from one place to another in Yash & Sanjay’s combat scenes because as the film’s story, nothing is clear enough to understand anything.

KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Chapter 1 was enough to register why there could be no one else apart from Yash to get the machismo of Rocky with such accuracy & swag. Chapter 2 just strengthens the similar thought further by transitioning him from ‘bhai to bhagwan’. Makers make sure to keep Rocky bhai on the pedestal boasting his high-octane presence in every alternate scene. The way he delivers his self-written dialogues, one can’t help but listen to him (even if that doesn’t interest you).

Srinidhi Shetty gets too little to contribute to the narrative, plus she gets a song (Mehbooba) that clutters the second half without any solid explanation. Sanjay Dutt was expected to repeat Kancha Cheena from Agneepath but due to the story’s myopic treatment, he doesn’t get a single chance (apart from his introduction sequence) to register any intrigue.

Raveena Tandon’s PM remains one-dimensional throughout the film without creating any major impact. Prakash Raj is reduced down to be a mere narrator, adding nothing apart from his voice.

K.G.F: Chapter 2 Review

KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Prashanth Neel, like every other director working with ‘worshipped by fans’ star, gives in to the fan service losing his focus from what should’ve been a raw & earthy treatment of the story. The film celebrates Yash not once or twice but in every scene, he is in, it’s just Prashanth fails to find equally interesting reasons to do so for most of such instances.

Ravi Basrur’s background score serves in a huge spectrum from too loud to too trippy. Just like every other thing, even the BGM of this film is on steroids complimenting a few sequences, burdening others. Not a single song is going to remain in my playlist after the film, but the problem is they aren’t even situational.

KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, this jumps from ‘larger than life’ to ‘larger than god’ treatment, and gives Yash fans another reason to celebrate his heroism. But beneath all the screams and boisterous BGM, one important thing gets suppressed and rarely gets a chance to flourish – intriguing storytelling.

Two and a half stars!

'KGF: Chapter 2' Review: A terrific Yash powers an explosive sequel

A still from KGF. (File Photo)

Four years ago, the makers of KGF: Chapter 1 made a promise. A promise of making the biggest Kannada film that will reach new avenues and newer audiences. And today, they are back with KGF: Chapter 2, and if the responses are anything to go by, the promise has been kept. Written and directed by Prashanth Neel, who is a superstar in his own right, the KGF films have grasped the entire nation’s consciousness and reinvented the time-tested story of an underdog coming on top surmounting all odds. But then, when the underdog in question is the seemingly invincible Rocky Bhai (Yash), every element of the masala template is dialled up to astronomical levels.

The second part continues right from where the first part ends. We now see the “pillars” of Narachi being forced to accept Rocky as their new boss. Of course, this leads to resentment across the board, and it is clear that betrayals will be hitting Rocky left, right, and centre. But we don’t watch KGF for the ingenuity of the plot, but for inventiveness in the making. Whenever we think a high point of a particular conflict is reached, it is almost like Prashanth is giving a lopsided smile hinting as if it was just the tip of an iceberg. This is something that happens on more than one occasion and is a testament to the impact of the writing. For instance, in other films, the meeting of Adheera and Rocky might have been the ideal climactic showdown.

kgf 2 movie review in english essay

However, here we have three brilliant sequences featuring them where there is an oscillation of power, and each of these scenes delivers the grandeur and intensity that KGF will forever be known for. Another facet of KGF that will be always associated with the franchise is hyper-stylised violence. While there is a lot to discuss where the film falls on the moral spectrum, the arresting visual style of the film masks such thought processes during its runtime.

A lot of such questions do arise while watching KGF 2, the primary of which is the terribly underwritten female lead. With Srinidhi Shetty’s Reena suffering from a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome, one can’t help but feel bad about her character sketch. It is troubling because even smaller roles like the one played by Easwari Rao get a neatly rounded arc. Surely Reena and Srinidhi deserved better.

The film also almost runs the risk of feeling bloated, especially in the pre-interval portions, because there are a lot of layers being packed in too quick a time. There are one too many villains, and one too many crisscrossing storylines. Even the final few minutes of the film left a vacuous feeling because I wasn’t sure if it did justice to the events that transpired across two films and eight years.

However, the towering performance of Yash ensures these are just fleeting thoughts and we don’t really dwell on them because the actor, in supreme form, keeps us hooked on his brand of nonchalance acting. More than his playful turns, it is the emotional beats that are most effective, and the rage-filled eyes of Yash say more than what he does in his trademark broken English. And these dialogues not just add to the constant undercurrent of humour, but also has noteworthy lines that can go right on motivational posters. Sample this, “Greed is good… Greed is progress…” Yes, it is, Rocky Bhai. Another writing highlight of KGF: Chapter 2 is how a buildup song in this edition also acts as a quick narration of the first part. It checks both the ingenious and inventive boxes. Of course, there is no point discussing the logic, or the lack of it, of this film, which always stays true to the world created by Prashanth Neel.

The brilliant technical team conjures mesmerising visuals to keep us invested in the world of KGF. Keeping the colour palette to a minimum, cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda gives us some stunning visuals that capture the grandeur of the project without really showboating. No aspect of this opulence feels wasted or overboard. Be it the vast expanses of the mines or the never-ending shots of an array of vehicles including cars, planes, ships, bikes, helicopters etc… every visual element of KGF stands tall. If there is showboating of any sort, it is in the editing by Ujwal Kulkarni. And even here, the work might seem excessive, but in an over-the-top world of KGF, it fits in perfectly.

Three other technicians who truly elevate KGF: Chapter 2 are composer Ravi Basrur (the chest-thumping background score), art director Shivakumar (the tasteful coronation stairs, the greyness of the mines, and more), and stunt choreographers Anbariv (every scene involving Yash brandishing weapons, the car sequences, and more). Àlmost every high moment of KGF: Chapter 2 is the collaborative work of each department, and it is wonderful to see how each of them worked like clockwork to deliver this grand spectacle.

The concept of pan-Indian movies might have now been reduced to a gimmick in most cases, but the KGF franchise is a true-blue example of this developing trend. The success of the first part pushed the makers to dream bigger, and they managed to rope in names like Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Rao Ramesh, and Prakash Raj to lend necessary gravitas to roles that were already hyped up. Sanjay Dutt is menacing as Adheera, the primary antagonist, and writer-director Prashanth treats him with the right amount of respect. Adheera has moments that place him ahead of Rocky Bhai, and the same holds good for Raveena’s Ramika Sen. Both actors ace the roles that don’t just exist to do lip service to the larger-than-life lead character.

Replacing Anant Nag was never going to be an easy task, but points to the writing that seamlessly introduces Prakash Raj into the mix. There is a fascinating mix of humility and pride in his baritone as he delivers the narration. Although the film boasts of such big names, KGF: Chapter 2 never loses focus on what it is actually about — Yash and Rocky Bhai — and it is the relentless attempts at elevating the star at the centre of it all that gives us a fantastic film that proves the world will always be accepting of one more “mother sentiment” film.

At an important juncture in KGF: Chapter 2, Rocky asks his detractors to avoid pointless conversations about him keeping to his territory. He announces, “The World is my territory”, and if the response to an early morning show of the Tamil version of the film is anything to go by, we have an outsider breaking down walls to become the most unlikely pan-Indian superstar... or as he’d like it... Pan-India’s ONLY Rocking Star.

Review: 'KGF: Chapter 2' betters its predecessor in every department

  • Release Date: 14/04/2022
  • Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Achyuth Kumar
  • Director: Prashanth Neel

KGF: Chapter 2  begins exactly where  Chapter 1  had left off. Rocky (Yash) has killed Garuda and has taken control of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The conspirators who had sent him to kill Garuda are taken aback by this sudden change of fate and decide to eliminate Rocky. However, Rocky proves to be equal to the task and easily subdues them with his swag and muscle power. In desperation, the conspirators turn to Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), a vicious and brutal killer who was presumed dead and has a legitimate claim to the throne of KGF. He makes a towering comeback and nearly brings Rocky to his knees. What is left to be seen is how Rocky responds. He has a history of hitting back the hardest when pushed to the wall. Will he do the same again or will Adheera prove to be too strong for him to contend with. To know the answers to those questions, you have to watch the film at a theatre near you.

Elaborate story, engaging screenplay, and effective direction

KGF: Chapter 2  is relentless in its storytelling. For a film that is 168 minutes long, there isn’t a single dull moment. The speed of the narrative remains consistently breakneck but does give the viewers enough time to absorb the content on display. I thought that the pacing might come down a little in the second half as is customary with most films but that never happened. The story is so dense and has so many elements, twists, and underlying emotions and drama that I would not be wrong to say that it has enough material to propel three films.

Prashanth Neel’s direction is masterful. Every sequence feels like a short film in itself as it begins slowly, gathers momentum, and reaches a crescendo by the time it arrives at its culmination and ends with the desired release of the tension and excitement for the audience. This aspect of the film is common for all the sequences be it simple exchanges, dramatic show-offs, or complex action sequences. The sequences are designed and executed in such a way that allows the visual and auditory presentation to milk the last ounce of machismo from the protagonist and the many antagonists. The result is a film that will give you a thousand reasons to cheer in its runtime.

KGF Chapter 2 Review: Yash Struts Through Battering Ram Of A Movie With Undisguised Glee

A still from KGF: Chapter 2

Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Anant Nag

Director: Prashanth Neel

Ratings: 2 Stars (Out of 5)

About the only good thing about K.G.F. Chapter 2 is that you know what you are buying into. Chapter 1 had driven home the point that Raja Krishnappa Beria, better known as Rocky, isn't an ordinary gangster. He does not have a gang with him. He is a lone wolf with the appetite of one. He is just the sort of protagonist you would expect in a film such as this. Everything that it conceives is rendered in gigantic, sweeping doses.

Lead actor revelled Yash in playing a hero with the power of a battalion - an act that catapulted him and the movie into the national consciousness. In the second instalment of the story, having established his individual suzerainty over the Kolar Gold Fields, the protagonist continues to hurtle down the same path, sweeping aside everyone and anyone who stands in his way. He tightens his stranglehold on El Dorado. The film gasps for breath.

K.G.F. Chapter 1 was a humongous hit all right, but cinematically it was a terribly pedestrian affair - loud, verbose, manic and monotonous. K.G.F. Chapter 2 , written and directed by Prashanth Neel and produced by Hombale Films' Vijay Kiragandur, exudes confidence that it has nothing to lose. It doesn't lower either its volume or its volubility one bit.

The film is the handiwork of people who do not seem to have the foggiest sense of modulation, or of moderation, in the matter of pitching and sound design. Relentless action, an unstoppable torrent of words, a splotchy and grainy colour palette and dizzyingly fidgety camerawork get in the way of the story acquiring any degree of tonal variation.

Indeed, K.G.F. Chapter 2 is one uninterrupted, ear-splitting drone that lasts all of three hours. If your brain survives the onslaught, chances of your eardrums remaining unscathed are slim. The film allows itself absolutely no breathing space either in terms of pacing or with regard to what it piles up on the soundtrack.

In this toxically macho world, women are the worst sufferers. They, like the heroine Reena Desai (Srinidhi Shetty), either stand by and do the bidding of the men - Rocky announces right at the outset to the girl's face that "you are my entertainment" and that is meant to sound cool - or haplessly wail and rant in hope of being rescued from their plight.

By way of facile tokenism, there is much ado about a girl child in Narachi who hasn't been killed at birth. The older women in the goldmine region once lorded over by ruthless tyrants and now in the control of the benign hero - a marginally better version of the guys he has snatched power from - perpetually have their backs to the wall.

K.G.F. Chapter 2 opens with the death of veteran journalist and writer Anand Ingalagi (so, Anant Nag has no role here). His narration about the rise and rise of Rocky, an orphan boy who cut his death in the merciless underworld of Bombay, is left incomplete. Deepa Hegde (Malavika Avinash), the TV station boss, wonders who will take the story to its (il)logical end.

Anand Ingalagi's estranged son Vijayendra (Prakash Raj), who has no reason to mourn the passing of his dad but cannot resist the urge to continue what the deceased raconteur, the author of a banned book on the Kolar Gold Fields and Rocky's role in its history, started.

The device of an all-knowing sutradhar leads to the film's rare pauses (not silence, mind you), thanks to Prakash Raj's ability to modulate his dialogue delivery and lend a certain gravitas to meaningless lines like "history says that powerful people come from powerful places".

Everyone else in K.G.F. Chapter yelps and shrieks. One of them contradicts Vijayendra's and asserts that it is powerful people who make places powerful. That is the apogee of the philosophical wisdom that this mass entertainer peddles.

Of course, for good measure, Rocky, sounding like Gordon Gekko, intones that greed is good, greed is progress. The film's idea of plot progression is pitting the hero against a whole lot of people who are ambitious and aggressive as him. So, there is no dearth of conflict in K.G.F Chapter 2.

With the background score intent on squashing any possibility of serenity, the film gallops like a runaway horse with Yash ('Rocking Star' is prefixed to his name in the opening credits) firmly on its back. The men who once swore allegiance to Garuda (Ramachandra Raju), the Narachi Limestone Corporation owner's ambitious son who lost his life at the hands of Rocky in the preceding chapter, are now his rivals.

But Rocky leaves nobody in any doubt at all about his resolve to call the shots in KGF here on. But the evil politician Guru Pandian (Achyuth Kumar), the heroine's father Rajendra Desai (Lakki Lakshman) and Andrews (B.S. Avinash) aren't the only ones Rocky has to reckon with as he transforms himself from a brigand in pursuit of glory to a leader of the downtrodden goldmine workers.

Adheera (Sanjay Dutt, evoking his Agneepath arch-villain vibes and pulling out the stops) returns from the dead, the new Prime Minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon) vows to demolish the KGF empire, and senior CBI officer Kanneganti Raghavan (Rao Ramesh) gathers all the ammunition that he and his outfit need to end the reign of the country's most notorious criminal.

K.G.F. Chapter 2 is relentless is its pursuit of high drama and unbridled action - one scene follows another in a non-stop exhibition of cinematic excess that prevents the niceties of the medium finding their way into the messy, massy mix.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

The focus of the film is squarely on Yash. Like he did the first time around, he struts through K.G.F. Chapter 2 with the undisguised glee of a man who knows that he has the measure of his adversaries. Ultimately, the big action sequences, mounted with flair but sans any element of surprise or realism, look and feel mechanical because we know all along no great harm is going to befall the hero.

K.G.F. Chapter 2 is a battering ram of a movie. It is designed to pound the audience to submission. It is only for Yash fans and for those who feel an assault on the senses is a form of cinema. But if you love your eardrums and have had your fill of the super-heroic exploits of an underdog-turned-top dog hero, K.G.F. Chapter is best avoided. It whips up plenty of heat and dust but yields no gold.

KGF – Chapter 2 Review: A Violent Saga That is Thankfully Backed by Thoughtful Writing

kgf 2 movie review in english essay

Reena ( Srinidhi Shetty , who leaves a mark as the barely-there love interest of a complicated man) is sweating, and she complains that the man who is keeping her hostage in the name of love, should do something about it. “ Maniyammaa, appalam jaakiradhai ,” warns Rocky ( Yash ) after making arrangements accordingly with one of his henchmen. Having seen many films where a brutish man pursues a woman, you understand the task at hand. You wait for an extravagant air-conditioning machine to appear, but Rocky Bhai has something entirely else on his mind. In a nutshell, this is what Prashanth Neel ’s K.G.F: Chapter 2 is all about. Bigger beyond the viewer’s wildest dreams.

Is it always better? Well, definitely better than the first instalment. Characters like Adheera and Ramika Sen, played fabulously by Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon , needed extensive writing. It is not that they aren’t scary enough. They are, but the intimidation comes from the actors, not the script. However, I cannot call this film under-written. If anything, it is the opposite – every scene is densely populated with characters. KGF 2 doesn’t know what a quiet moment is, and it is better for it. Armed with Ravi Basrur’s score, every instant vibrates with chaotic energy. It puts a willing viewer in a trance and keeps them there. For the first time in a long while, I enjoyed the whistles and hoots of the over-enthused. Don’t get me wrong, the film isn’t all about elevations and surpassing expectations. Beyond the chaos, there is order. Beyond the swag, there is substance.

“ Kalaas ” snickers Rocky while examining a Kalashnikov in a tense moment. While the filmmaker manages to distract us with wordplay, the callback that comes later is one of the best-executed pieces of filmmaking and writing in masala cinema. Even the violence, which gets numbingly excessive after a point, is handled with more thought than you expect in big films with big men holding big guns. The filmmaker foresaw the desensitisation, so he transforms the action sequences with thought and technique. While one chase sequence benefits from stylised editing, another mutes the sound and puts us in our shocked hero’s head, oblivious to the bloodshed going around him.

The world-building, in no small part thanks to the art department and Bhuvan Gowda’s camera work, is satisfyingly meticulous. Even the muted grimness is visually pleasing because of the way it is captured and utilised. Yash, too, does a beautiful job bringing this world alive. He is captivating as this pragmatic man whose well of affection for his mother is bottomless. The most vital thing an action superstar has to possess is conviction. To believe that he is the king of the world. To imbibe that belief with confidence enough to let him unironically walk into a room oozing swag. Yash seems to have it and then some.

I have my problems with the narrator. There are inconsistencies, and Prakash Raj , playing the son of Anand Ingalagi, is a smart choice – his voice adds heft, but his issue with his father lacks relevance and resolution. But, I have to admit, the peon that religiously listens to the story is an excellent proxy for the viewer. His enthusiasm is infectious, and the actor who plays him makes for a great hype-man. Even Eswari Rao ’s mourning mother is an update on the trope. She is never begging but bargaining; give her closure and get her blessings.

Small touches like this don’t do much for the proceedings but affect your viewing experience immensely. Choosing to introduce Rao Ramesh ’s character by having him address someone named Ramesh. A Kattappa-esque Vaanaram (a perfectly-controlled Ayyappa Sharma) whose loyalty lies with the place and not its people. “We had enough wars,” says Ramika Sen, the PM, before revising her plans for peace. “I don’t like violence,” says the hero who knows nothing else, thus establishing the idea that power begets violence and destruction. Again, it’s nothing and everything.

Oscars 2022: The Highlights, Surprises and Snubs

A saying goes, “Powerful people come from powerful places.” The narrator disagrees and says, “History was wrong. Powerful people make places powerful.” Good thing that Rocky Bhai doesn’t believe in history. But I can’t entirely agree with the narrator. Rocky does come from a powerful place – his mother. A woman in her early 20s dreams big dreams for her son. She never thinks to question them, and neither does her son. He is never taught to question his ability or its limits, which is both a gift and a curse. This is how K.G.F: Chapter 2 wins and wins big. Instead of trying to find resonance with some myth or the other, it uses a bond as elementary as the one shared by a mother and her child and weaves a legend of its own.

KGF: Chapter 2 movie review – Prashant Neel and Yash conclude the tale of India’s most wanted criminal with elan

The second and final instalment in director Prashant Neel’s KGF saga was touted to be bigger and better than the first film. Does it live up to the hype?

KGF: Chapter 2 movie review – Prashant Neel and Yash conclude the tale of India’s most wanted criminal with elan

Story: Rocky’s got Garuda out of the way, but KGF isn’t his just yet. Rajendra Desai, Andrews and Gurupandian are still vying for the throne of that empire. For that, they need to find someone formidable enough to take on Rocky and who better than Adheera for the job. The government, led by Prime Minister Ramika Sen, is also determined to root out Rocky. Who will have the last laugh?

image_item

Review: When KGF: Chapter 1 released in theatres in December 2018, critics were far from nice, literally ripping apart director Prashant Neel’s film and dubbing it a series of stylized slo-mo shots designed to worship the hero – Rocky (Yash) - amid a flimsy story. The reviews, though, had zilch impact on the film, as audiences across the country lapped it up, allowing the team to laugh its way to the bank. Ultimately, that’s all that matters, as far as Hombale Films, Prashant, Yash and the rest of the team were concerned – they’d achieved what they set out to do. To make a big film, which their target audience would hopefully love and appreciate. And love they did, elevating the film to an even higher pedestal.

Yash in a still from KGF: Chapter 2

With KGF: Chapter 2, the team promised that whatever they did in the first part would be bigger and better, as they could afford it. But does it live up to that hype? Oh hell ya! KGF: Chapter 2 is a visual spectacle – everything’s been magnified times 10; it helps that the action is not in the mines. Rocky is now the most wanted criminal and the lord of KGF, but the real star of KGF: Chapter 2 is costume designer Saniya Sardhariya. Armed with a hero who has immense screen presence and looks fabulous in the designer suits she kits him out in, Saniya presents a 2-hour-48 minute extended commercial for Raymond – The Complete Man. But boy, does Yash look good onscreen!

Sanjay Dutt as Adheera in a still from the film

Let's look at some of the things that worked and didn't for this chapter. Throughout the process of KGF: Chapter 1 and 2, Prashant has always maintained that the story that he began with, with the intention of making one film called KGF, has remained the same. The difference between the two parts that it eventually became is only in the scale on which he has mounted each of them, with the second reaping the benefits of the first’s success.

If we are to take the moral high ground, Rocky’s underdog tale that Yash’s has been going to town about, wherein a mother exhorts her son to escape the clutches of poverty by any means possible, is quite problematic. Especially since he then chooses a life of crime to get to that goal.

With KGF: Chapter 2, the basic undertone of the story remains the same and it is still wafer thin. Rocky’s goal is firmly set on his mother’s dying wish. And it doesn’t matter how many lives are lost along the way. It's the conflicts along the way of Rocky's rise to power that form the crux of the narrative, so, saying anything more will be a spoiler,

Yash in KGF: Chapter 2

After all the brown and grey shades of KGF: Chapter 1, Bhuvan Gowda unleashes the full might of his cinematography skills, capturing the spectacle that is Rocky and his empire. Of course, both Prashant and Neel love dull muted tones, which finds place in the action sequences, lovingly captured in slo-mo, with every little detail in place.

Ravi Basrur’s music was one of the highlights of KGF: Chapter 1 and is here too, although it does feel a tad too loud and overbearing at times.

Sanjay Dutt makes Adheera look and feel menacing, aided immensely by Balaji Manohar’s vocals for the character, and his confrontations with Rocky, especially in the final moments, are, no doubt, among the best moments of the film. The same cannot be said of Raveena Tandon’s Ramika Sen. The actress brings gravitas to the role, but, say, Sudharani, who voiced her character, could have done as good a job, if not better.

Srinidhi Shetty’s Reena had such a pointless and severely limited role in part 1, that she had to draw everyone’s attention to her by proclaiming repeatedly that Prashant has made it up to her by giving her character more to chew on this time around. It appears that the actress was misled by the team. Or perhaps the bump up from 5 to 15 minutes was enough for her.

If you thought that KGF: Chapter 1 was an extended showreel of hero worship, Chapter 2 takes that to another level. Right from his intro scene when he arrives in KGF in a chopper, to the end, Chapter 2 has Yash in pretty much every frame and if he ain’t there, whoever is has enough to say about Rocky Bhai that you almost feel his presence.

Verdict: It really doesn’t matter what reviews say about KGF: Chapter 2. The craze surrounding the film in the run-up to its release and the massive advance bookings are testimony to the fact that irrespective of what any critic thinks, this film will make bucketloads of money.

But having taken the trouble of watching an early morning show at an exorbitant rate, here’s what I think – KGF (KGF: chapter 1 and 2 put together) is by no means a great film. It’s a spectacle that fans of that genre are gonna love. Rocking Star Yash’s fans can rejoice. If he announced his arrival as a pan-Indian star with Chapter 1, with Chapter 2 he proclaims that he’s here to stay.

Here's hoping that while setting new and amazing standards of filmmaking, the team also slips in a more palatable story next time.

KGF: Chapter 2 stars Yash, Sanjay Dutt and Srinidhi Shetty in lead roles

  • Movie Name: KGF Chapter 2
  • Critics Rating: 4 / 5
  • Release Date: APR 14, 2022
  • Director: Prashanth Neel
  • Genre: Action, period and drama

Kannada language period action-drama KGF, which was released in 2018, set in motion a mythical story about India's most notorious criminal, Rocky Bhai, at the centre of the world's biggest goldmine El Dorado. An almost God-like antihero, Rocky, played by Yash, whose on-screen presence is truly unmatched and unseen in a long time, returns on the big screen with even more swagger and fiery intensity in his eyes. Four years later, the sequel retains the same elements in storytelling that made it a blockbuster back then and more importantly a fan favourite.

KGF's story makes a seamless transition into the sequel. It is almost like Marvel's storytelling. The experience is immersive and grips the viewers from the beginning. For a refresher, the sequel devotes the opening scene to recalling KGF's hidden truth and with it, the story of greed, violence, politics and mindless bloodshed to unearth gold hidden in KGF mines. A call back helps viewers establish a connection instantly and also paves the way for Rocky-mania to unfold.

Yash's intro scene does full justice to his larger-than-life character. In a long sequence, with a thumping, orchestral background score, set in the ruins where he now rules, we see a stylish and suited up Rocky Bhai walk in against a silhouette. This is the moment where you get the hint that Yash is set to take you on a ride. He makes snappy transitions from a funny and fast-talking man to an intense one. The characterisation by director Prashanth Neel has to be praised here. In between mindless mayhem, Rocky's unpredictability becomes even more striking and effective. The audience connects with Rocky's sarcastic and serious nature with equal ease.

KGF: Chapter 2 story runs parallel in the present and the past, like the first part. Within this larger narrative scheme, the director uses more parallel editing to connect themes and keep the pace edgy. At no point in time does the story gets convoluted. Most of the characters make a return in the sequel and with them some newer ones too. However, the only way one makes a distinction between them is whether they are with or against Rocky and his empire. Such is the enigma of this character that all details get dissolved into the larger picture.

Even as the character becomes more unabashed and deadly in the sequel, Rocky's underdog story and the emotional scenes from his past life, with his mother in them, make him human and vulnerable. The connection that is established in passing flashbacks is meaningful and the feeling of loss and pain lingers on. This establishes a real bond with the character, one that goes deeper than the surface.

Sanjay Dutt plays the antagonist Adheera in the movie. His confrontation with Rocky is too intense. In solo scenes, however, Dutt fails to measure up. His character looks frail in some scenes but Dutt nevertheless does the job. Raveena Tandon as Prime Minister Ramika Sen is also against Rocky's empire. She does well with the role on her plate. The director has tried to imply that Rocky and Ramika mirror each other's grit and characteristics, but this idea does not develop fully. In comparison to Yash, Raveena and Dutt's roles make less impact. Meanwhile, Rocky and Sona's (Srinidhi Shetty) chemistry develops further in Chapter 2 but honestly, it does not really add any dimension to the movie overall.

Prashanth's direction and his vision seem like they know no bounds. He has gone bolder with KGF: Chapter 2. The imagery is metaphorical and the many twists and turns leave you gasping in excitement. Rocky's sharp dialogues will acquire a separate fan base. However, as we reach the climax, we do tend to wear out with the template storytelling. But there is enough meat to keep you on the edge and root for Rocky, one of the masses who turned into the leader of the masses.

Yash's 'KGF Chapter 2' movie review: Rocky bhai's machismo thrills throughout

Ajish Jimmy George

Director Prashant Neel's magnum opus sequel of 'KGF Chapter 1' is all set to fight it out at the box office with Thalapathy Vijay's 'Beast'.

Indeed, the two movies have similarities and the most obvious being the heroes who can withstand the onslaught of an army alone.

With rocking star Yash in the lead, the second KGF franchise can be credited with the achievement of giving Kannada cinema a pan-India recognition.

Though critics had torn apart the first part of the film in reviews for poor editing and lack of substance, its box office performance had proven that director Neel's choices connected well with his audience.

'Chapter 2' is all about elevating the mass appeal achieved by the first part to the next level.

kgf 2 movie review in english essay

The plot is rather simple, Garuda is dead and Rocky (Yash) now has to face the challenges posed by the people who sent him to KGF, Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) and a powerful politician Ramika Sen (played by Raveena Tandon).

If Ramachandra Raju as Garuda seemed to be a strong villain in the first part, then you should see Sanjay Dutt in the second one. It might seem far stretched to portray him as a Viking-style warrior, but he pulls it off easily.

kgf 2 movie review in english essay

There is a tale about Adheera's sword and the blood it has seen in the past, but in the movie, it doesn't get to see much blood as Rocky has to divide his time between other enemies as well.

The character of Ramika Sen is clearly modelled after Indira Gandhi and the fabulous Raveena Tandon fits into the role perfectly, commanding the respect a prime minister deserves.

Ravi Basrur's music and background score was one factor that took the first part to people's hearts and chapter 2 also does the same magic. The 'Toofan' song gives a quick recap of the events from 'KGF Chapter 1'.

If the previous story was narrated by a journalist Anand (Anand Nag), this time his son Vijayendra (Prakash Raj) continues the task.

Also, similar to the first part, a lot of time is spent by Yash praising his own character and other characters are also allotted much time to hail Rocky's valour. While mothers and children are comfortable sharing time with Rocky bhai, others shudder in fear.

It is said that human life is not valued much in India because of the huge population, in 'KGF Chapter 2,' this is literally true as there are always more people to die. Just when you think that all the people supporting Yash in different cities of India have been killed, it is revealed that he had a reserve army of people in all those cities who would again rise to kill his enemies.

Yes, different cities in India. The scale of the movie is huge and it is not the story of a local gangster, but in Rocky's own words a “monster” who “owns India” or maybe even the world.

Rocky's love for Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) was revealed in the first part and you would have thought she too had the same feeling for him. But in the beginning of the movie itself, she is brought to 'Naraachi' as a captive and kept as an “entertainment” for Rocky. What happens next is somewhat like the way Raavan keeps Sita in 'Ramayana.' He treats her like queen and waits for her approval to marry. Unlike in Ramayana, Reena falls for Rocky after coming to know about his past and the reason for his never-ending greed for gold.

The stunts in 'KGF' were the best part of it, however, a chase sequence could have been portrayed better without the blackout pattern in editing. It had all the potential to be made like a 'Fast and Furious' chase scene. Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda's frames are worth the big screen and though largely grey and black, the colours come into play when Rocky's swag needs it.

There is a lot of violence and also lots and lots of whistle-worthy moments in the film. If you love watching action thrillers with mass dialogues, this movie is for you. There is also a hint of a third chapter. So watch out for that as well.

Review: ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ is visually impressive, but falters on narrative

Entertainment south indian.

This film is a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster and shows Rocky’s reign

tabloid!

For the uninitiated, K.G.F. stands for the Kolar Gold Fields. This film is a sequel to the 2018 released ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’.

With its timeline stretching from 1951 to 1981 and narrated in a non-linear manner, the film takes off from where it left in the first chapter.

Anand Ingalagi, the author of the book El Dorado, suffers a stroke the night after detailing the events in Chapter 1. His son Vijaayendra Ingalagi (Prakash Raj) takes over the narration. He continues to tell us of the rise and fall of Rocky, the kingpin of Kolar Gold Fields who was considered the “Biggest Criminal” by the government of the country, the “Biggest Businessman amongst his peers, and the messiah of the downtrodden at Kolar Gold Fields.

He tells us how Rocky retained his supremacy against his adversaries and government officials while also coming to terms with his past.

TAB 220415 KGF 2 PIC 1-1650090102044

The narrative takes us from Kolar to Paali to Varca, to Surat, UAE, Delhi, Banglore, and Bombay and loads us with dramatic dialogues that are amusing.

Mounted as a magnum opus the film begins in a dramatic tone, verbose and loud. Gradually you realise that the telling is its undoing. On-screen the passive narrative makes the film appear like a grand, hyper-active montage laid over a voice-over.

The action sequences along with the high-pitched sound that accompanies the visuals, make you care less for the characters. Also, the fight sequence in the climax seems like an action jamboree where one is not sure, who is fighting whom. Generally, the emotional connection is lost.

On the performance front, Yash displays a variety of emotions, from brutally ruthless and menacing to humane and a bit dumb at times he is good. But, despite his stylish, raw, and rugged look, he lacks the persona of a larger-than-life superhero or an anti-hero.

Sanjay Dutt as Rocky’s opponent Adheera makes a stronger impact with his tattooed visage and braided hairdo, unfortunately, his character is poorly written and thus appears on screen only for the action sequences.

Raveena Tandon, with her intense look, makes the formidable Prime Minister Ramika Sen appear relatable. How she means business while dealing with anti-social elements is intriguing. Unfortunately, she appears in the second half of the film, when the interest in the film wanes away.

Srinidhi Shetty, as Rocky’s love interest and later wife, Reena is sincere in her performance but is short-changed by the poorly written script.

The others in supporting roles seem to befit their characters, and they all essay their roles earnestly.

TAB 220415 KGF 2 PIC 2-1650090098046

The film showcases ace technical and production values. But the VFX, at times, lacks lustre. The only good thing about this film is Bhuvan Gowda’s cinematography. He captures the picturesque locales and the emotions of the characters with precision. His frames seem like replicas of iconic masterpieces, picture-perfect and poster-worthy.

The film, despite being brilliantly edited by Ujwal Kulkarni does not seem to be seamlessly layered. There are moments where the scenes seem to be abruptly interspersed with blank screens while the audio plays in the background.

Overall, this film may appeal only to the fans of ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’.

KGF Chapter 2 Review: Baap of Elevation of Heroism

KGF Chapter 2 Review: Baap of Elevation of Heroism

Movie: KGF Chapter 2 Rating: 3/5 Banner: Hombale Films Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Malavika Avinash, Rao Ramesh, Eshwari Rao, and others. Music: Ravi Basrur Director of Photography: Bhuvan Gowda Editor: Ujwal Kulkarni Action: Anbariv Producer: Vijay Kirangandur Written and directed by: Prashanth Neel Release Date: April 14, 2022

“KGF”, originally made in Kannada and released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam languages simultaneously, was a box-office phenomenon. The second part “KGF 2” already took the box office by storm with massive advance sales.

The pre-release buzz was on par with “Baahubali 2”. Is the second part worth all the hype? Let’s find out…

Story: ‘KGF 2’ begins with the aftermath of Garuda’s killing. Rocky Bhai (Yash) who created an army of his own in KGF becomes the most powerful man.

Meanwhile, Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) arrives to reclaim KGF. Plus, Inayat Khalil and Prime Minister Ramika Sen (RaveenaTandon) are closing in on him.

Can Rocky deal with these powerful people? What fate is in store for Rocky? Will his girlfriend Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) unite with him?

Artistes’ Performances: Yash who has got terrific swag mesmerizes us again with his style and intense performance. In the first part, he didn’t get a chance to wear designer clothes. Here, as the richest don, he wears colorful suits and grooms himself well. He oozes style in every scene. He gets dialogues that suit his mass persona. His performance is also terrific.

Sanjay Dutt as Adheera is stunning as his getup goes. His imposing personality and his demeanor have suited well to the powerful character. But his role is not that effective for the main antagonist.

Raveena Tandon steals the moments she is in. She has got her look right and has delivered a powerful performance.

Srinidhi Shetty gets a lengthier role than what she was offered earlier. Eeswari Rao makes her presence felt.

Besides Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj is the new addition to the world of KGF but didn't get a role worth talking about. Rao Ramesh has a decent role.

Technical Excellence: The action sequences are stunning. Anbriv has come up with adrenaline-rushing episodes this time as well. Ravi Basrur’s background score enhances the overall experience. The cinematography and the production design are grand. But the visual effects are not effective in certain parts.

Highlights: Yash as Rocky and his swag Prashanth Neel’s dialogue writing Elevations of heroism Background score Racy screenplay

Drawback: The emotional quotient is not strong

Analysis The first part of “KGF” ended up setting the stage for a showdown between Rocky Bhai and Adheera. In the first part, we didn’t get a full glimpse of Adheera and his face. The real story of Rocky’s rise in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) unfolds in the second part and as we have guessed, we get to see the fight between Rocky Bhai and Adheera.

Director Prashanth Neel doesn’t waste time drawing us into the world he has created in KGF. Like in the first part, the film begins with a journalist interviewing a writer who documented the developments in the Narachi Company. In the second part, Ananth Nag’s son Prakash Raj steps in to narrate the story.

Since we have already seen the story of Rocky from being an assassin to the don of KGF, the focus of the second part is on his problems with the new batch of forces.

If we see the history of gangster movies, the ‘rise’ of a don always makes an interesting watch, but his ‘rule’ doesn’t. In “KGF 2”, Prasanth Neel has played his game well. There are issues with his narrative, but he holds our interest from start to the finish, as the film is filled with many elevating scenes. He elevates heroism to the peak.

So, the drama involving Rocky and his new batch of nemesis is not as gripping. Despite the presence of big stars like Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon pitching against Yash, the drama is not rousing enough.

Four episodes are the main highlight…

1. After Adheera defeats him, Rocky takes a step back and returns with a bang. The scene of Rocky attacking Adheera again in the backdrop of mines is visually stunning.

2. To get one biscuit of gold, he sets an entire police station on fire with a terrific mass moment (you can also see a glimpse of it in the teaser).

3. The scene of Srinidhi informing Yash about her pregnancy

4. Raveena Tandon’s Burma episode

Besides creating adrenaline-pumping sequences, Prashanth has written terrific dialogues. “Ikkade Talale Maaruthai Keereetalu Kaadu” is a fine example of his smart writing. Like in the first part, he abruptly cuts a scene and brings in a narrator-interviewer scene to further proceed the story, thus saving a lot of runtime.

Prashanth Neel mounts the film on a lavish scale and extracts the best output from his music director, cinematographer, and lead hero.

However, the film has its share of issues.

Yash entering the parliament hall with his own army is like taking illogicalness to the extreme. The mother-doctor sequence in the final moments is absurd. The Eeshwari Rao-her son’s episode is another forced drama.

Despite these minor issues and illogical sequences, Neel keeps churning out one cinematically highlighted moment after another.

On the whole, “KGF 2” is a total paisa vasool entertainer. It is a feast to the mass audiences. The film is like a baap of elevations and lives up to the hype. “KGF 2” provides entertainment and gives an immersive experience with mass moments.

Bottom line: Worth the hype

‘KGF: Chapter 2’ Review: Yash In Prashanth Neel’s Hit Sequel

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It takes a lot of confidence to wear a white suit to a fight in an open-cut mine. It takes something else — maybe an Avengers -style superpower, to repel dirt — to come out of said fight still gleaming, shirt collar tidily spread across those snowy lapels, shades on. Rocky, outlaw hero of KGF , has confidence to burn, obviously: When he tells a former U.S. president that he is the CEO of India , he isn’t joking. We know that for sure because, whatever else he does — fighting off would-be assassins, staging boardroom coups, buying off every politician in the Indian legislature or mashing heads with a mallet — Rocky, like his American namesake, doesn’t joke. He’s got stuff to do.

KGF: Chapter 2 (aka K.G.F.: Chapter 2 ) is the second half of Prashanth Neel ’s action smash hit, arriving more than three years after the first on a hurricane of hype to a whistling, stomping reaction from fans the world over, and a $70 million-plus global opening this past weekend. Much of that enthusiasm is commanded by Yash , the smokin’-hot Kannada superstar who prances and punches his way through almost every scene as Rocky Bhai. Credit where it’s due, however: Neel pumps along his story — which is completely crazy — with every trick he can muster.

Jagged cutting, spectacular drone shots, a dramatically bleached color palette that gives the film the look and feel of a comic book, surging choreography involving what looks like thousands of extras, vicious and prolonged fights: this is the proverbial whopper with the lot. Above all, KGF 2 gives us an almost non-stop blast of noise; when the Kalashnikovs falter, Ravi Basrur’s unrelenting score surges to fill the void. It’s often exciting, for sure. It’s definitely exhausting.

The KGF of the title is a gold mine, an open-cut canyon teeming with enslaved workers, beyond which an industrial complex of fuming chimneys stretches to the horizon. An environmental catastrophe or, from another point of view, pure money. In the first film, the upwardly turbo-charged Rocky arrived in Karnataka from Bombay — where he began his working life as a shoe-shine boy — to kill Garuda, the chairman and hereditary owner of this El Dorado. He then installs himself as boss. Chapter 2 takes off from that point at breakneck speed. Rocky is on his way to becoming insanely rich and — mwah-ha-ha!! — a world-beating criminal mastermind.

It takes him just a few hectic scenes to crush the other family owners into submission, kidnapping the most glamorous of them, Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) and moving her into the best bedroom in his mansion — “for my entertainment” as he says, ominously, in English. The thousands of mine workers and their families love him immediately, partly because he provides them with food and clothes, but mostly because he’s so unutterably cool Reena will eventually love him too. Of course she will: issues of consent do not loom large in Rocky’s badass world. As one fan wrote in response to a negative review, this is not a film for women.

One problem with one-note action films like this one is that even the best of them tend to sag, sometime towards the middle of the second hour, under the weight of repetition. Neel’s solution at this point is to bring on a bigger, nastier and more picturesque enemy than the ineffectual police and posses of family retainers Rocky has faced off so far. Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), apparently the longstanding power behind Garuda’s throne, is a Mad-Masala brute who has modeled himself after the Vikings. Adheera is covered in tattoos, brandishes a sword and communicates largely by roaring. When he and Rocky fight mano-a-mano, it is a clash of testosterone titans.

Meanwhile, the tension tightens. Rocky’s other potential nemesis is the prime minister, played with impressive grit — often of her teeth, given that she has to convey power and determination with a mere handful of lines, this not being a film for women — by Raveena Tandon. And there is another enemy skulking behind Adheera — the brain behind his brawn — revealed towards the end of the film in a cascade of information that is momentarily confusing, but dissolves satisfactorily into yet another deafening volley of bullets. Game over, my friend.

This is pretty much the way things go in KGF world. Even with the framing device of a narrator supposedly relating the whole story (sonorously delivered in this chapter by Prakash Raj), it is still easy to miss who is sabotaging or supporting whom, at least in the initial telling. Fortunately, key points are repeated, sometimes more than once, for the slower among us. And, actually, the details don’t matter much: the crucial thing is that Rocky Bhai is propelled, sometimes at speed and sometimes in slow-mo but always impeccably suited and coiffed, towards KGF Chapter 3 . Which, I have every confidence, is even now hurtling towards us, full of sound and plenty of fury.

Why Isn’t KGF Chapter 2 Releasing In English Too? Yash Aka Rocky Bhai Reveals | Exclusive

Yash starrer KGF Chapter 2 will hit theatres on April 14. (Image credits: Instagram)

KGF 2 is slated to release worldwide on 14th April 2022 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam.

KGF 2 has grown beyond its initial take-off. Started eight years ago as a Kannada movie, the franchise has now spread wide and beyond. Recently, Rocking star Yash, the Rocky Bhai of the magnum opus, shared a few thoughts with News18.com regarding the film. He was joined by director Prashanth Neel and producer Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale films.

“We started from here, from Kannada and now we are everywhere” began Neel. “I have taken extra care for Kannada dubbing for the same reason. KGF has reached a stage where such an extensive promotion may not be needed. But we made sure to go places, not to promote but to thank people” said the maker.

Ever wondered why KGF Chapter 2 which is releasing simultaneously in five languages has not attempted English? When asked about the same, Yash instantly replied, ‘Namdu Butler English!’ (I speak broken English). “So not taking a chance there. Also, the pattern of an English movie is entirely different from the rest. How will we show a song and dance sequence to an English audience for example? Our director has that capacity for sure (to make an English movie). He may do something in the future. There is time for English,” the actor told News18.com.

Yash has been speaking in various languages (Hindi, Telugu, Tamil etc) wherever he went for promotion. Yet, he didn’t dub in those languages. “I am managing conversations in those languages. But not very perfect to be dubbing in them. People who come to theaters shouldn’t feel disturbed. So I have only dubbed for Kannada”, said Yash.

“The entire KGF project took longer than expected. At the end more than the number of movies, it’s the quality that remains. I might have done 10 movies in these 3 years, and chances are that none would have spoken about them. But, doing one movie like penance and maintaining that quality and credibility is a huge responsibility that we are pulling off now. It feels worth the wait, Let’s see.” quipped the actor.

KGF 2 is slated to release worldwide on 14th April 2022 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam. The movie is said to be made in a 100 crore budget. Directed by Prashanth Neel and produced by Hombale Films, music is provided by Ravi Basrur. Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Malavika Avinash are playing pivotal roles with Yash and Srinidhi Shetty in the lead roles.

But don't get fooled by Prashanth's obsession with intercuts, because the spirit of K.G.F: Chapter 2 is surely more Scarface than The Godfather. Review: When KGF: Chapter 1 released in theatres in December 2018, critics were far from nice, literally ripping apart director Prashant Neel's film and dubbing it a series of stylized slo-mo shots designed to worship the hero - Rocky (Yash) - amid a flimsy story. The reviews, though, had zilch impact on the film, as audiences across the country lapped it up, allowing the team to laugh its ...
