Hello Darlin’ – Feature Film Review
Hello Darlin’ follows the story of ex-paratrooper turned armed robber Les Dalton (Doug Allen) as he is released from prison and starts to build a relationship with his estranged daughter, Holly.
Director Gary Delaney brings to life the writing of Edward Hockin in this powerful feature film. We follow Les Dalton as he is released from prison after serving nine years for armed robbery. As grim as things are on the inside, Les doesn’t have much to look forward to on the outside. A decrepit flat with as much joy and soul as a slab of concrete; an adult daughter who has spent so much of her life without her father that she has become more accustomed to his absence rather than his presence.
Holly is fundamental to the new life Les is trying to build. She helps get him set up with a phone and somewhere to live, but the familial bond between them is distant. The collapse of her parents’ marriage puts Holly in a difficult situation between the two parties.
Despite being on parole, Les’ desire for action gets the better of him as he decides to undertake some work in ‘pest control’. The apartment building where he lives is plagued by two thugs demanding protection money from the residents and terrorising them when they can’t pay.
All the while, Les is being followed by the detective from the case that landed him in prison. Detective Derek Clayton is convinced Les has the missing gold from the robbery. In fact, so is Les’ ex-wife, Carol. Les tries to keep his cards as close to his chest as possible, but when the truth about Carol’s relationship with her new husband emerges, Les has some difficult decisions to make.
Overall, the film is brilliantly executed. From the locations to the cast, right down to the cinematography. As our protagonist, Doug Allen carries the film with a kind of everyman’s James Bond style. He is both suave but also human; Allen treads the fine line between the two with ease. The relationship between Les and his neighbour, Aanya (played by Nimmi Harasgama) adds another dimension to the film with some gentle humour and nuanced conversation. Daisy Badger as the daughter of Les plays an excellent role, remaining elusively mysterious for much of the film. A further source of elusive mysteriousness is Detective Derek Clayton, who exists on the periphery of the narrative as a haunting reminder of Les’ past. Patrick Carney Junior captures the role of the down-beaten detective who can’t let go of an unsolved mystery, providing a thread of threat and drama throughout with his accompanying voice over.
Channelling memories of films like The Italian Job , Hello Darlin’ example of British film at its finest. Watch the trailer below!

Komal Nahta’s Review: Hello Darling
Star cast: Gul Panag, Celina Jiatley, Eesha Koppikhar, Javed Jaffery, Chunky Panday, Divya Dutta.
Plot: Javed is a lecherous boss under whom Gul, Celina and Eesha feel sexually harassed. They decide to teach him a lesson.
What’s Good: Nothing!
What’s Bad: Everything, right from the crude jokes to the disjointed screenplay.
Verdict: HELLO DARLING will prove to be an alarming disaster.
Loo break: Anytime!
It is supposed to be a comedy on the burning topic of sexual harassment at the work place. But the tragedy is that the so-called comedy fails to evoke laughter or even a smile.
Pankaj Trivedi and Sachin Shah, who tickled the funny bone with their adult comedy, Kya Kool Hain Hum , fail miserably this time, what with their disjointed script being an assemblage of crude jokes, crass lines and double-meaning – make that single-meaning (the dirty one!) – dialogues. Is it because the film has turned out to be so shoddy that Subhash Ghai chose to not even present younger brother Ashok Ghai’s film under the Mukta Arts banner? Or is it due to the accusation that the film is a rip off on the Hollywood flick, Nine To Five ?
Anyway, Mansi (Gul Panag), Candy (Celina Jaitley) and Satvati (Eesha Koppikhar) work in a company, the vice president of which is lecherous Harddick (yes, that’s how his name is spelt!) Vasu. He sexually harasses them, they physically harass him when they tie him up in chains and hold him captive for days together – and all this harassment becomes an embarrassment for the public to watch. The sexual advances are so direct, you wonder if there’s anything called subtlety.
Gul is at least earnest and sincere in this mindless enterprise. Celina and Eesha are okay. Jaaved Jaaferi should stop acting in films with such inane plots. Chunky Panday has been hoplessly wasted. Divya Dutta tries to entertain with her Gujarati ben act but a…ra…ra…. , doesn’t she know, Ketaki Dave did it ages ago as Daksha ben in Kyunki… Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? Seema Biswas plays Phoolan Tai and must say, Shekhar Kapur, who introduced her as Phoolan Devi in Bandit Queen , would cry tears of blood if he saw this film.
Manoj Tiwari makes a pitiable debut as director. After all, he is unable to raise any laughter, chuckle or smile. Pritam seems to be out of form because the songs are far from engaging.
On the whole, Hello Darling will bid the box-office ’bye in no time. As for those associated with the film, they’ll have to say “hello” to failure.

Hello Darlin'
Film review, patrick foley.
Apr 6, 2022
Directed by:
Gary delaney, written by:, edward hockin, doug allen, nimmi harasgama, daisy badger.
Hello Darlin’ is a geezer-ific, morally obtuse drama from director Gary Delaney, which features some great tension and character building, but is let down by plot holes and an ending which feels detached from the rest of the story. The result is an engaging, if flawed film which doesn’t quite deliver on its promise.
Les Dalton (Doug Allen) is an ex-soldier recently released from prison for armed robbery. He is stalked by detective Derek Clayton (Patrick Carney Jr) who brought him down 9 years earlier, as he attempts to rebuild his life with daughter Holly (Daisy Badger) and new neighbour Aanya (Nimmi Harasgama). But both his friends and enemies believe Les still has stolen gold stashed away somewhere, despite his objections. And that belief soon gets him into trouble again…
There’s a lot about Hello Darlin’ that really doesn’t work. It’s central macguffin (the mysterious gold) is given little definition or detail – such as where it was stolen from or how it came to be hidden. The plot is confusing and convoluted, and features some rushed and poorly explained developments – such as Les and Derek’s impromptu alliance only shortly after it is established that the detective has spent 9 years planning to take revenge on his rival. Character motivations are all over the place as well, with pretty serious transgressions from Holly and Les’ wife Carol (Sian Reeves) raised and dropped in sudden fashion. The ending also feels a poor fit thematically, and fails to really wrap up the numerous plotlines.
However, despite this, there is something enjoyable and engaging about the film that is worth checking out. Doug Allen is brilliantly empathetic as the hero who cannot quite escape his dark past. Learning to direct an inner fury and calculated malice at those who deserve it, whilst working on making up for his past failings with his family and recovering from PTSD make him a fascinating anti-hero, and Allen’s quiet yet intense performance serves the character brilliantly. His chemistry with Nimmi Harasgama is convincing and makes for a believable love story between two very different characters. Similarly, Patrick Carney Jr and Daisy Badger are strong as allies and antagonists to Les. It’s just a shame that their characters in particular do not act more consistently within the story.
The film is shot in a dynamic manner and director Gary Delaney shows a real ability to build tension in a number of scenes. The night-time break-ins are pulsating (though the lighting in the second makes it hard to follow) and even simple conversations are directed in such a way to bring a sense of unease in viewers as to character’s true intentions. Fight scenes are believable and brutal, and impressively restrained in their number given the film’s premise, to the greater effect of those that do take place – which are used sensibly to progress character development.
Hello Darlin’ is not a classic, but for an intense, well-performed drama that builds its characters well and intensifies its central premise, it works well. The plot unfortunately falls apart somewhat, and undermines some excellent stuff elsewhere – leaving the film’s potential unfulfilled.

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, alice, darling.
Now streaming on:
There is something bothering Alice. She’s underwater, watching the murky light and floating seaweed above her. She is not swimming back up for air—at least not yet. The scene is a precursor to something that will happen later in the movie “Alice, Darling,” but it’s also a visual metaphor for the character’s state of mind. In reality, she’s back on land, meeting her friends at a restaurant in the city. Although she’s in good company now, her mind is elsewhere. Below the surface of her smile, Alice ( Anna Kendrick ) is holding on to an abusive partner, Simon ( Charlie Carrick ), a truth revealed in a handful of uncomfortable conversations, guilt trips, and anxious behavior like pulling out her hair and panic attacks. Her relationship’s red flags are as clear as flashing billboard signs for her worried friends, but Alice looks past these warnings as if they’re her partner’s love language. Under the guise of a birthday getaway, her friends Sophie ( Wunmi Mosaku ) and Tess ( Kaniehtiio Horn ) stage an intervention for their friend sinking away from them: swim up and get out. Save yourself.
Mary Nighy ’s feature debut “Alice, Darling” is a straightforward drama about getting caught in the undertow of a bad romance. The telltale signs seem obvious to outsiders like her friends and viewers, but for Alice, she’s still performing the mental gymnastics of justifying his controlling demands to her body, attention, and time and interpreting them as love and affection. She’s dug into a defensive position and unable to see the damage Simon’s behavior has caused her, how she fears asking for time for herself, how suffocatingly he clings to her skin.
Nighy balances these perspectives as generously as she can. Almost every exchange or nervous glance from friend to friend or lover to lover feels like a hostage negotiation. What should be tender moments between the young couple are often cruel rounds of verbal and emotional abuse. The tension of the situation is baked within every confrontational staging between the pair or how detached Alice looks and feels from her friends. Even when Simon isn’t physically there in the scene, the fallout of his presence is visually evident. It’s isolated Alice from those who truly care about her.
The murkiness in Alice’s relationship carries over to the film’s aesthetics thanks to cinematographer Mike McLaughlin . Alice’s world looks a little less bright than the one her friends live in, as if she only ever ventures out on overcast days. There’s a warm tone to the girlfriend’s cabin trip to the woods, but something still looks off, like the peace and serenity of the location are somehow missing. In a move that overcomplicates the already tense drama at hand, Alanna Francis ’ script adds an element of danger to their trip through a subplot about a missing young woman. Alice becomes fixated on her, perhaps fatalistically so, and the mystery becomes an excuse for Simon to escalate his control over her. Maybe it’s to be a cautionary tale for Alice or something to entice her to escape, but none of this quite pans out as effectively as her narrative journey with her friends.
As the movie’s namesake, Kendrick embodies the tortured feeling of holding onto someone harmful. Alice tells her friends, “He wouldn’t love me if he knew how bad I am,” justifying her mistreatment repeatedly to them and herself. Kendrick’s performance is a stunning departure from her usual bubbly screen presence. That persona fades behind the distracted stare of a person who has to calculate every pro and con of what they say before they say it. She is overwhelmed by the pressure and unable to swim up for air, an SOS which Kendrick communicates through a range of reactions, from catatonic vacant stares to succumbing to heaving waves of a panic attack on the bathroom floor. She’s committed to this story and her character.
Kendrick’s performance is one of the strongest aspects of “Alice, Darling.” Under Nighy’s direction, they create an emotional portrait of someone on the verge of being lost to a warped distortion of love but who realizes they were surrounded by the real thing the entire time. For every cutting remark Simon makes at her expense, her friends are trying to rescue the person they knew before. That tension makes for good drama, but it takes the team’s sensitivity to make it feel as authentic as it does. It’s a relief when the credits roll, not unlike taking your first breath of fresh air after holding it underwater.
In theaters now.

Comedy is serious business and I genuinely believe that making people laugh is an arduous task. The best of film-makers, with years/decades of experience behind them, have tried attempting laughathons time and again. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they don't. HELLO DARLING also tries to tickle your funny bone, but in vain.
Frankly, the story of a sex pervert and three alluring ladies could've resulted in one naughty film. HELLO DARLING uses every trick in the book [skin show, generous dose of double entendres et al] to make you laugh, but barring a scene or two, the effort falls flat on its face.
Final word? This film is a joke in the name of comedy! HELLO DARLING tells the story of three working girls - Candy [Celina Jaitly], Mansi [Gul Panag] and Satvati [Eesha Koppikhar] - who bond together in a posh office of Mumbai, though each of them belongs to a different stratum of society. The biggest issue they face is in their work place. It is headed by their smart boss Hardik [Jaaved Jaffrey], a chronic playboy. He is smart. They have to be smarter. Who wins this battle of the sexes?
An interesting story idea may not translate into an interesting/entertaining film. On paper, perhaps, the concept of HELLO DARLING may sound hilarious, but what unfolds is childish and bizarre. Forget smiling, you wear a constant smirk on your face at most times. In fact, even if the plotline was weak, but had the writers [Pankaj Trivedi and Sachin Shah] and director [Manoj Tiwari] packed the film with gags and punches, the film would've kept your attention alive. But what comes across is an excuse in the name of comedy.
A few funny moments, like the 'kidnapping' of a dead body from the hospital and a Godmother [Seema Biswas] who brings errant and wayward husbands back on track, are amusing. But the negatives outweigh the positives in this case. In fact, the goings-on get unbearable towards the post-interval portions, when a robber [Vrajesh Hirjee] lands up at Gul's apartment and finds Jaaved chained. From that point onwards, till the finale, which includes the boss [Sunny Deol] reprimanding Jaaved and transferring him to Bangladesh, the film only worsens.
Director Manoj Tiwari fails to deliver, mainly because the writing is corny. The double entendres, used generously to spice the proceedings, are tasteless. The music [Pritam] is mediocre, barring the 'Aa Jaane Ja' track. Ravi Yadav's cinematography is functional.
Amongst the three, Gul stands out with a convincing performance. Celina is decent, while Eesha doesn't look like a Haryanvi. Jaaved goes over the top, but is believable nonetheless. Divya Dutta is alright. Chunky Pandey gets no scope. Seema Biswas is just right. Sunny Deol, in a brief role, is monotonous. Asawari Joshi is passable. Mukesh Tiwari is wasted. Ditto for Vrajesh Hirjee.
On the whole, HELLO DARLING tries hard to make you laugh, but falls flat on its face. In fact, this comedy is more of a tragedy for the viewer.

The curtains roll up flashing light on a fashion designing firm. Hardik Vasu (Javed Jaffrey), the flirtatious boss of the designing company, has a lusty desire to spend the night with hot women. Candy (Celina Jaitley), Mansi (Gul Panag), and Savitri (Isha Koppikar) work in the same firm. Mansi is fed up with her boss for stealing her work every time. Unknowingly, Mansi mixes rat kill to Hardik’s coffee that makes him fall from his chair after taking a sip. An utter chaos enters their life, as they start thinking their boss is dead. The story revolves around how all the women get rid of their boss once & for all, getting promoted to the higher post in their firm.
There could have been a better plot and a better story. Trying to make it spicy and entertaining, director Manoj Tiwari forgets to add a proper context to the movie. It can be categorized as a B-grade movie.
STAR PERFORMANCES:
Having a cast like Gul Panag, Isha Koppikar, and Javed Jaffrey, “Hello Darling” looked promising. But all that got out was nothing but utter rubbish. No story, no script, just some cheap jokes.
WHAT'S THERE?
1. Basically, a remake version of "Magalir Mattum”.
2. Javed Jaffrey’s acting in the lead.
WHAT'S NOT THERE?
1. No story, no script, just same old Bollywood spice.
2. Nothing new.
Don’t waste your valuable time watching such a bogus, and story-less movie.

As our protagonist, Doug Allen carries the film with a kind of everyman's James Bond style. He is both suave but also human; Allen treads the fine line between the two with ease. The relationship between Les and his neighbour, Aanya (played by Nimmi Harasgama) adds another dimension to the film with some gentle humour and nuanced conversation.

Hello Darlin' is a geezer-ific, morally obtuse drama from director Gary Delaney, which features some great tension and character building, but is let down by plot holes and an ending which feels detached from the rest of the story.
