Kenyon Writing Award

High school seniors can apply for this scholarship program at Kenyon College which offers up to $15,000 per year of merit based aid. It is based off of your portfolio and does not take into account financial need, high school GPA , or other factors. Submissions typically have to be in by January of your senior year.

Barbara Caras Memorial Scholarship for Film Students

The scholarship is open to students in Sarasota or Manatee County, Florida who have completed at least one full year at an accredited Florida College and are majoring in Film, Computer Animation, Creative Writing, Motion Design, or Illustration. Five recipients will earn a $2,000 award. The application deadline is July 31st of the current year.

Lycoming College Creative Writing Scholarship

The scholarship is open to students majoring in Creative Writing at Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA and must submit five poems and/or a short story not to exceed ten pages. Six recipients will be selected and can earn up to $3,000. The scholarship deadline for the Fall 2023 Class is March 1, 2023.  

Arkansas Tech University Gwaltney Scholarship

The scholarship is open to ATU students who submit individual works of fiction to the Department of English. Recipients earn a one-time cash award every year. The deadline to submit your entry is 2 weeks before the end of the spring semester.

Lake Forest College Carnegie English Essay Contest

The contest is open to first-year students of Lake Forest College who plan to study English either through the literature or creative writing track and submit an essay, between 500 and 1,000 words answering a designated prompt. Four winners will be awarded $2,500 annually. Submission deadline is March 1, 2023.

Austin Peay State University Creative Writing Scholarships

The scholarships are open to undergraduate and incoming APSU students who email a 10-20 page manuscript of fiction, poetry, or creative non-fiction, to Lakota Withrow at [email protected] . Awards are for $600 or $1,200. The deadline to apply is March 18th.

Some organizations are looking to support students who are interested in certain fields of study. Others are open to students from the same community or geographic region. Check with your high school guidance office as they will have information on opportunities that are unique to your school or community. Your employer may also have a scholarship program. Starbucks, Burger King, and McDonald’s are just a few businesses that support their employees in this way. There’s almost certainly something for every student.

The Equitable Excellence Scholarship is awarded to driven and determined students of high character, with recipients coming from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. In addition to a scholarship, recipients are also provided with development opportunities such as mentoring, networking, and skill-building programs. 

2. Live Más Scholarship – Taco Bell Foundation

Amount: Up to $25,000

Deadline: January 11 

• Employed in a restaurant position with Taco Bell
• On track to apply to a post-high school or post-secondary program (both two- and four-year programs are eligible)
• Have not previously won a Live Más Scholarship

Application Requirements: A two-minute video describing your passion 

The Live Más Scholarship selects winners a little differently than the traditional scholarship award winners. The Taco Bell Foundation is less concerned with academic and athletic excellence and more interested in finding passionate students who blaze their own paths, pursue their dreams, and inspire others. Students who have already been awarded a Live Más Scholarship can apply for a renewal.

3. Too Cool to Pay for School  

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: Last day of the months of March, June, September, and December

Eligibility: Full-time high school, college, or graduate students

The Too Cool to Pay for School Scholarship is Access Scholarships’ contribution to help four lucky students each year cover school-related expenses. The scholarship can be used to cover any education-related expenses, such as tuition, textbooks, housing, and other fees. This scholarship is super quick and easy to enter (no essay required!), making it a great opportunity to apply for each quarter. 

4. GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program

Amount: Up to $40,000

Sponsored by General Electric (GE) and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, this scholarship is dedicated to honoring the legacy of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Awarded to skilled and successful students, the scholarship promotes principles important to its namesake: individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy, and national pride. The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is looking for students with demonstrated leadership, drive, and citizenship.

5. VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship

Amount: Up to $35,000 

Deadline: October 31 

Eligibility:  

• 9th-12th grade students
• Enrolled in a public, private, or parochial school, or home study program in the U.S., its territories, or its possessions

Application Requirements: Three-five minute audio-essay

The VFW works to promote patriotism while investing in future generations, particularly “democracy-loving” high schoolers. Dating back to 1947, the Voice of Democracy Competition is an audio-essay program giving students the chance to express their thoughts through a recorded essay about democratic- and patriotic-themed principles. Essays are judged on three criteria: originality, content, and delivery. Applicants can win awards ranging from $1,000 to $35,000, making this an exciting scholarship opportunity.

6. Doodle 4 Google Competition

Amount: $30,000 for the student and $50,000 technology grant for their school

Deadline: March 7

• K-12 students
• U.S. citizen or legal resident 
• Enrolled in a U.S.-based school (including homeschool or a school in Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands)

Application Requirements: Unique doodle that includes the letters G-O-O-G-L-E

The Doodle 4 Google Competition gives applicants the opportunity to create one of the doodles that graces Google’s homepage every day. The competition’s themes change yearly (this year’s theme is to share what you appreciate the most) and the only requirement for them is that they must include the letters G-O-O-G-L-E. Applicants are encouraged to express themselves through whatever medium they desire—although if you create a 3D doodle, you’ll need to submit it in a 2D format. 

7. Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest

Amount: Up to $10,000 

Deadline: November 6

Eligibility: High school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student (no citizenship requirements)

Application Requirements: Original essay between 800 and 1,600 words

Applicants for the Atlas Shrugged Essay contest are tasked with writing an essay about one of three provided topics on Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged . Judges of the contest are looking for clear, articulate writing; well-organized thoughts; and an exceptional grasp of the philosophy underlying Rand’s book. 

8. Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship

Amount: $10,000 (plus a $1,000 donation to the winner’s school)

Eligibility: 

• 14 years of age or older
• High school, college, or university student enrolled in an academic program designed to conclude with a diploma or degree

9. Tall Clubs International (TCI) Foundation Academic Scholarship

12. Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Amount : $20,000 

Eligibility:

• High school senior
• U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, Cuban-Haitian entrant, or Humanitarian Parole as defined by the U.S. Department of Education for Federal Financial Eligibility
• Planning to pursue a post-high school education
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Complete an eligibility quiz
• Must provide information on academic performance, leadership, and service

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship is awarded to exceptional students with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a difference in the world. Coca-Cola Scholars are high achievers and demonstrate leadership, service, and a commitment to change in their school and community. 

13. Davidson Fellows Scholarship

Amount: $10,000-$50,000

Deadline: February 15

• 18 years old or younger
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Created a significant piece of work
• Nominations from two individuals who are not family members
• Available to attend an in-person or virtual awards ceremony 

Davidson Fellows are gifted students who experts believe have the potential to make significant contributions to society. These students have completed a significant and meaningful piece of work in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Literature, Music, Philosophy, or “Outside the Box”. This can include the creative application of existing knowledge, a high-impact new idea, an innovative solution with a broad range of implications, or a remarkable performance, just to name a few examples. 

14. National Elks Foundation Most Valuable Student (MVS)

Amount: $4,000-$50,000

• Plan to be a full-time student pursuing a four-year degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning

Applicants work through the ranks of local, district, and state levels to be considered for the MVS. The Foundation selects the top 500 students from these applications for the national semi-finalist competition. The top 20 students from the semi-final competition will participate in a Leadership Weekend with in-person interviews. The top two students (one male and one female) are awarded $50,000 scholarships. Runners-up receive $40,000 and $30,000 scholarships. The remaining 14 students receive $20,000. The additional 480 of the top 500 applicants earn a $4,000 scholarship.   

Opportunities for Students with Significant Financial Need

15. horatio alger association – targeted scholarships.

Amount: Up to $52,000

Deadline: Varies

• Critical financial need (defined as $55,000 or less gross adjusted household income)
• Demonstrated integrity and perseverance through overcoming adversity

Horatio Alger scholarships are awarded to promising young students from low-income families. These targeted scholarships are endowed by members of the Horatio Alger Association at several different universities and colleges. Some are also targeted to specific fields of study. 

16. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

Amount: Up to $55,000 per year

• Cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5
• Demonstrated unmet financial need—applicants with a family annual gross income up to $95,000 are considered 
• JKCF uses the Common App (include JKCF as one of your “schools”)
• Common App asks for a recommendation from your school counselor and two teachers

The Cooke College Scholarship Program offers scholarships to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need. JKCF Scholars join a nationwide community with ongoing personal and professional support and development opportunities. Recipients can use their scholarship funds to cover tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. 

17. Engebretson Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $5,000 per semester

• In need of financial assistance 
• Planning to attend a four-year college

Application Requirements: 

• Minimum 3.75 GPA and/or in the top 5% of graduating class
• Score of 28 or higher on the ACT 
• Teacher recommendation 

The Engebretson Foundation Scholarship is aimed at high-achieving, academically talented students with financial need. One winner is chosen annually to receive a $5,000 per semester scholarship. 

18. Dell Scholars Program

Amount: $20,000, a laptop, and $500 of textbook credits annually for four years 

• Enrolled in an approved college-readiness program, like College Possible or Upward Bound
• On track to graduate from high school in the coming academic year
• Demonstrated financial need 
• Pell-eligible

Application Requirements: Minimum 2.4 GPA

This program is for students with “grit, potential, and ambition” to strive for a college degree. Dell Scholars are also provided with wrap-around support for academic success, financial matters, and teletherapy professional counseling.

Opportunities for First-Generation Students

This scholarship program is designed for Hispanic students who have maintained academic excellence throughout high school, participated in community service, and demonstrated leadership. Colgate-Palmolive offers this program in partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation in support of higher education for Hispanics.

20. Fontana Transport Inc. Scholars Program

Amount: N/A

• Planning to enroll in an accredited four-year higher education institution 
• Demonstrated financial need
• First-generation college student 
• Planning to study: Transportation Management, Math, Science, Engineering (any field), Architecture, Environmental Design, Pre-Med, Psychology, or Spanish Language/Literature

This scholarship seeks to support first-generation, underrepresented college students studying in select fields. The intent of the award is to help students who are passionate about pursuing higher education overcome barriers—like lack of resources and hardships encountered in their communities—and achieve successful futures.

This scholarship program provides awards for academically gifted African Americans who are active within their communities. Applicants should have demonstrated an interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship, and global citizenship—the four pillars of the late Ronald H. 22. McDonald’s HACER National Scholarship

Amount: $5,000-$100,000

• U.S. resident or a DREAMer/DACA recipient
• Under 21 years old 
• Have at least one parent of Hispanic heritage
• Minimum 2.8 GPA

This scholarship program provides 30 college-bound students of Hispanic heritage awards ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. Recipients are selected based on a variety of factors including academic achievement, community involvement, and financial need.

23. APIA (Asian Pacific Islander) Scholars

Amount: $2,500-$20,000

Deadline: January 19

• Asian or Pacific Islander ethnicity, heritage, or ancestry 
• Citizen, national, or permanent resident of the U.S
• Citizens of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau are also eligible

This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for students of Asian or Pacific Islander descent to receive valuable funds for college. APIA Scholars works to support underserved APIA students through their scholarships—a special focus is given to students who live at or below the poverty line, students who will be the first in their family to attend college, and students from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education. 24. Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars

The Jackie Robinson Foundation goes beyond sponsoring scholarships, to guide minority students through the process of higher education. 25. National Society of High School Scholars STEM Scholarship

Deadline: October 13

• Planning to pursue a degree in a STEM field

The NSHSS STEM Scholarship provides support for students from groups underrepresented in STEM fields. The goal is to increase diversity in STEM-related professions through college and university education. 26. Native American Education Undergraduate Scholarship–American Indian Education Fund

Amount: Up to $2,000

Deadline: April 4

• Native American, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian
• All future undergraduate students in a two- or four-year college, university, vocational, or technical school are encouraged to apply

The American Indian Education Fund believes that “education is one of the most important cornerstones of self-sufficiency and quality of life.” With that in mind, the AIEF works to end the cycle of poverty by providing scholarships, literacy programs, and school supplies to Native American students. A GPA between 2.0 and 3.5 is desirable—as is an ACT score of 14 or above—however, all current or future undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.

29. Lindsey Vonn Foundation Scholarships

The Lindsey Vonn Foundation provides scholarships, programs, and mentorship in order to support future generations by helping them pursue their passion, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals. Applicants that are 200% below the Federal Poverty Line are prioritized.

More work = fewer applicants

The more work applying for a scholarship is, the smaller the applicant pool will likely be. Scholarships involving video production, such as the Live Más Scholarship, or a well-thought-out essay, like the Dell Scholars Program, all demand a healthy amount of hard work which keeps the competition at bay. 

Apply to a mix of larger and smaller awards

All the above scholarships are relatively well-known, so they will still be incredibly competitive even if they involve a lot of work. Don’t limit yourself to applying for huge national awards—look for local groups who may have smaller awards, but also smaller pools of candidates.

Research past winners

Scholarship committees tend to have an idea of “what they’re looking for.” To present yourself in the best light, research past winners to get a better sense of what scholarship committees want to see. Most scholarship pages will have a section dedicated to past winners, what their application was like, and where they are now. It's never too early to start saving up money for your college education. Even if you are only in your first or second year of high school, there are plenty of opportunities to start bringing in money that will pay for your tuition, books, fees, and living expenses a couple of years down the line.

You might be surprised to learn that there are actually hundreds of scholarships available to underclassmen. If you're just starting your hunt, use this list of the best scholarships for high school freshmen and sophomores to get started.

This list includes a variety of scholarships for freshmen and sophomores. I've broken them down into the following categories:

These scholarships are not limited to one college or university, so students who win these awards will be able to use them for a variety of schools.

How to Use This List of Scholarships for Sophomores and Freshmen

Before we go over the scholarships you can apply for, let's quickly review the best ways you can use this list of scholarships for sophomores and freshmen.

Rule 1: Play to Your Strengths

Start out by looking at the different categories below. Are you creative? Then consider applying to some of the scholarships that require artwork or a movie for their applications. If you're a strong writer, on the other hand, consider applying to scholarships that require essays.

Rule 2: Apply to Many Scholarships

The beauty of starting your scholarship hunt early is that you have a lot of time! So use it wisely to apply to as many scholarships as possible.

We recommend applying to anywhere between five and 30 scholarships. Most scholarships on this list and beyond are competitive, meaning many students will be applying for them. You'll increase your chances of winning money if you don't put all of your eggs in one basket!

Rule 3: Pay Attention to Details

Make sure you read all the rules carefully before you apply for a scholarship, and be certain that your essays and other application materials address what is being asked. It's a waste of time to apply to scholarships if you're going to end up disqualified simply because you failed to follow the instructions.

Similarly, make sure to stay on top of important deadlines. You don't want to miss out on a great scholarship because you accidentally missed a due date!

Rule 4: Do Your Own Research

Keep in mind that this list is just a starting point. There are many more scholarships available to younger students, and there very well might be some that are more suited to your talents and interests. Don't be afraid to do some Google searches to see whether there are any scholarships out there that correspond to one of your unique traits.

Remember, the more obscure a scholarship is, the better your chance of winning it will be!

Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum Student Essay Contest

The Oklahoma City National Museum hosts an essay contest for students in grades 5-12. Topics encourage students to reflect on how other individuals or communities have shown strength and resilience to overcome challenges or tragedies. Students in grades 9 and 10 can submit 500-word essays.

• 1st place: $200
• 2nd place: $150
• 3rd place: $100

Ayn Rand Essay Contest

High school freshmen and sophomores can write an essay on one of several topics related to the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. The deadline to apply is April 27, 2023.

• 1st place: $2,000 (one winner)
• 2nd place: $250 (three winners)
• 3rd place: $100 (five winners)

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Essay Contest

To enter this contest, high school students must write a 1,000-word essay answering the question, "What does the second amendment mean to you?" The deadline is December 31, 2022.

• 1st place: $1,000
• 2nd place: $600
• 3rd place: $200
• 4th place: $100

Fleet Reserve Association Essay Contest

Students in grades 7-12 can enter this essay contest by submitting an essay of no more than 350 words exploring the role and importance of the spirit of Americanism and patriotism among our country’s youth. The deadline is December 1, 2022.

• Grand national prize: $1,500
• 2nd place: $750
• 3rd place: $500

Unigo $10K Scholarship

Students 14 or older can apply for a chance to win one grand prize of $10,000. Your application must include a 250-word response to the prompt: "It's important to be happy with who you are, regardless of your wealth or intelligence level. So tell us, would you rather be smart, funny or rich...and why?" The deadline is December 31, 2022.

Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship

High school students can submit a 250-word essay on a topic of their choice for the chance to be entered into a competition to win a $1,000 prize. There are two contests per year. The fall contest deadline is December 31, 2022, and the spring contest deadline is July 31, 2023.

Profile in Courage Essay Contest

Students in grades 9-12 can submit a 700- to 1,000-word essay about "an act of political courage by a US elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born." Essays must have at least five sources. The deadline for this year's contest is January 14, 2022.

• 1st place: $10,000
• 2nd place: $3,000
• Finalists: $1,000 (five winners)
• Semifinalists: $100 (eight winners)

MyImpact Challenge Contest

US students between the ages of 13 and 19 can apply to this scholarship to win one of 10 awards ranging from $1,500 to $10,000. You must complete the online application and submit an essay of no more than 1,200 describing your involvement in a community service project. The deadline for submission is May 21, 2023. 

• Student Grand Prize: $10,000
• Student First Prize: $7,500
• Student Second Prize: $5,000
• Student Third Prize: $2,500
• Student Honorable Mention: $1,500 (six prizes)

Optimist International Essay Contest

US students under the age of 19 can submit an essay on the topic "Who is an everyday hero who brings out the optimism in you?”. Club winners advance to the District contest to compete for a $2,500 scholarship. Students need to contact their local clubs to enter. Most club level contests are held in early February. Clubs must submit their winners to the district chair by February 28, 2023 . and Districts must submit a winner's information by April 15, 2023.

Visionary Scholarship Program

Any currently enrolled US high school student can apply to receive a prize from $1,000 to $5,000. Applicants must submit a completed application, a copy of their most recent (unofficial) high school transcript, and a 500-word essay. The deadline for this year's contest is June 1, 2023.

These next scholarships require a special action on the part of the applicant, from volunteering to playing an online game.

Humanity Rising Service Challenge

High school students who volunteer for a non-profit that meets Humanity Rising’s criteria may apply for this scholarship by sharing their service story. You must make an account in order to access the scholarship details and apply for the challenge. Awards range from $500 to more than $2,000, and all deadlines are rolling.

Sportsmanship in eSports Scholarship

This scholarship is available to all students who are involved in playing competitive eSports, like League of Legends or Teamfight Tactics. One $2,500 scholarship is awarded each year to students who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship. The deadline to apply is November 2, 2023   (they appear to not be awarding a scholarship in 2021).

Are you the creative type? This next set of scholarships for freshmen and sophomores is all about artistic ability and creativity. For these contests, you'll need to submit a piece of art, whether that's a story, painting, video, photograph, etc.

Create Real Impact Contest

Any student between the ages of 14 and 22 can submit either a video or graphic design on the topic of how to address reckless driving. The contest closes on April 27, 2023 .

• High School Social Media Campaign Prizes: $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500
• Video Category Prizes: $1,000, $500, and $250
• Graphic Design Category Prizes: $1,000, $500, and $250

Doodle 4 Google

Students from kindergarten to 12th grade can apply for this scholarship. Applicants must submit a Google Doodle related to this year's theme. All submissions are divided and judged by age group. The deadline is March 4, 2023.

• National Winner: $30,000 (plus a $50,000 technology award for the winner's school)
• National Finalists: $5,000 (four winners, one per age group)

Scholastic Art & Writing Award

Students in grades 7-12 with a keen interest in writing or art may apply to win a Best-in-Grade Award. Students in 12th grade only can also apply to win a Portfolio Award. Deadlines vary by region .

• Portfolio Award–Gold Medal: $12,500 (16 winners)
• Portfolio Award–Silver Medal: $2,000 (30 winners)

Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship Contest

US students who are at least 14 years old may apply for this scholarship of $10,000. You must design a greeting card using a photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front image. Submissions must be submitted as JPEGs (.jpg). The deadline is March 3, 2023. 

Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest

US high school students interested in art can apply to win up to $34,000 in national awards . Applicants must submit an original piece of art with a patriotic theme. The first-place winner from each state will then advance to compete for the national award. The winner's art will also be featured on the cover of the VFW Auxiliary magazine and the Auxiliary website. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2023.

If you've got a long-term hobby or activity you like to do, these next scholarships are right up your alley.

WIA Student Pilot Scholarship

Any high school student who is an active member of Women in Aviation International (WAI) may apply for this $3,000 scholarship. You must submit a completed WAI form, two recommendation letters, a 500-word essay, a resume, copies of all aviation licenses and medical records, and the last three pages of your pilot logbook, if applicable. The deadline for submission is October 12, 2023.

SBO Magazine Music Student Scholarship

Students in grades 4-12 can apply for this essay contest to win one of 10 $1,000 prizes. Essays must be 250 words or less and answer the contest's theme: "Why did you join band, and why do you stick with it?" The deadline is April 30 .

Technology Addiction Awareness Scholarship

US high school students can apply to this for a chance to win a $1,000 prize. Applications must be submitted along with a 140-character message that completes the following statement: "Instead of spending time with technology, I'd rather ... " The top 10 applicants will be contacted and invited to write a 500- to 1,000-word essay on technology addiction. The winner will be selected from this 10. Applications for this year's contest are due January 30, 2023.

Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award

Any full-time student aged 8-18 can apply to win one of 20 $10,000 scholarships. Applicants must show outstanding classical music achievement and demonstrate financial need. You must submit at least two audio samples of your music along with tax forms, transcripts, and other supporting information. To be considered for the JKCYAA Fall 2023 Class, all application materials must be received by April 15, 2023 .

Davidson Fellows Award

US students aged 18 or younger who have completed a "significant piece of work" in one of the categories listed here can apply to win a large scholarship. The deadline for this scholarship is F ebruary 15, 2023 .

• 1st place: $50,000
• 2nd place: $25,000
• 3rd place: $10,000

BMI Student Composer Awards Program

Both US and international students (in the Western Hemisphere) younger than 28 can apply to win a scholarship of up to $5,000. Each applicant must submit an audio recording of an original music composition along with legible manuscripts. The deadline for this scholarship is expected to be in February 2023.

Eagle Scout of the Year Award

US students aged 15 or older who are active members of a Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team, or Venturing Crew can be nominated to win a $10,000 scholarship. Applicants must be active in their religious institutions and have received the corresponding Boy Scout religious emblem and Eagle Scout Award; they must have also shown practical citizenship in their churches, schools, Scouting groups, and communities. Nomination and application forms must be received by the applicant's corresponding department (state) headquarters by March 1, 2023 .

• Runners-up: $2,500 (three winners)

National High School Oratorical Contest

US high school students under the age of 20 can apply to receive a maximum scholarship of $25,000. Students must first compete in their local oratorical contests and deliver a prepared speech on a particular topic. Winners will then advance to the national competition.

• 1st place: $25,000
• 2nd place: $22,500
• 3rd place: $20,000

State winners who participate in the national contest's first round will receive $2,000, and those who advance past the first round will receive an additional $2,000.

Location-Based Scholarships

Some scholarships are only for students who live in particular areas. Check out the following list of scholarships to see whether there are any contests in your region.

Meriwest Annual High School Essay Competition

Applicants must be in grades 9-12, have a GPA of at least 2.0, and live in one of these California counties: Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, or San Francisco. Students who live in Arizona's Pima County are also eligible. If you live outside these counties, you can still enter the contest if you're a member of the Meriwest Credit Union. The scholarship competition awards 12 prizes annually that range from $100 to $1000 . The deadline to apply is March 31, 2023. 

Meriwest Annual High School TikTok Comptetition

Any high school student who is a resident of New York State and whose parent(s) were disabled or deceased in service to the US Armed Forces is eligible for this award. The award provides a $450 annual fund to help the student pursue higher education. The application deadline is June 30, 2023.

Oklahoma's Promise — Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program

Oklahoma students currently enrolled in grades 8-10 and whose families make $60,000 or less annually can apply for the chance to receive full tuition for an Oklahoma public two-year college or four-year university, or partial tuition for an accredited Oklahoma private college. The application must include the first two pages of the applicant's most recent federal tax return. The deadline for this scholarship is June 30, 2023 .

This final section of scholarships for sophomores and freshmen includes those that are extremely easy to apply for—all you have to do is register for a website or submit an online application and you're good to go!

$2,000 "No Essay" College Scholarship

Any student can apply by simply registering on the website. A winner is chosen each month to receive $2,000. The deadline to apply is the last day of each month.

$1,000 Cappex Easy College Money Scholarship

Any high school student who registers and completes a profile at Cappex.com will be entered into a monthly drawing to receive $1,000. The deadline to apply is the end of each month.

Top Ten List Scholarship

Any US student 14 or older can apply for the chance to win a $1,500 scholarship. Applicants must respond to the following statement in no more than 250 words: "Create a Top Ten List of the top ten reasons you should get this scholarship." The deadline is December 31, 2022.

The INCIGHT scholarship is open to students in Washington, Oregon, and California who have a documented disability. The Marguerite Young Endowment Fund was established at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for students who plan to study theology. Application must includes proof of this, as well as a personal essay.

What are writing scholarships?

Writing scholarships are financial awards given to students based primarily on written work, though other factors are usually taken into consideration as well. Most writing scholarships involve a prompt or series of prompts to which applicants must respond. Some writing scholarships — especially those that award large amounts of money — require applicants to submit past writing samples, or even a full portfolio.

The good news is that, with so many writing scholarships to choose from, you don’t have to apply for any that are “out of your league.” Indeed, though most students have heard of writing scholarships, you may not realize just how many different varieties there are! Here are five of the most common types of writing scholarships, all of which you can find in this directory.

1. Personal essay scholarships

Personal essay scholarships involve writing on a topic related to your own experience. You’ll often see personal essay prompts like, “How have your experiences influenced your choice of major?” and “What are your career aspirations and how do you plan to achieve them?” Other prompts may ask you to write about a role model, a life-changing event, an aspect of your identity, etc. Suggested length is usually about 500-1,000 words, but varies depending on the level of detail requested and how many essay questions are provided.

Just about every scholarship these days has a personal essay component of some kind. This is because personal essay responses both demonstrate writing skills and give the judges a clear sense of each applicant’s goals. No one wants to throw away money on an aimless student — so if you’re applying for a personal essay scholarship, make sure to convey both your writing abilities and your ambitions in your work!

2. Critical essay scholarships

Critical essay scholarships are more in line with what students might consider  “academic” essays. The prompts typically ask applicants to analyze works of literature. However, unlike open-ended English class essays, most critical essay scholarships provide a very specific prompt (e.g. “Examine The Great Gatsby in the context of its World War II-era revival”).

Critical essay scholarships can also involve non-literary subject matter. Some may ask applicants to evaluate a historical event or figure; others may ask them to defend their stance on a political or legal issue. Though the line between critical and personal essays can sometimes blur, for the purposes of this directory, we define critical essays as those that use evidence from an external source to prove a point.

3. Short fiction scholarships

Short fiction scholarships include scholarships for short stories, one-act plays, poetry, and any other form of fiction that isn’t a novel or full-length script. Short fiction scholarships tend to be easier to find than long-form fiction scholarships, since most judging panels don’t have time to read more than a few thousand words per entry. Therefore, if you write fiction and you’re hoping to nab yourself a scholarship, this category is the way to go! (That said, if you’re a hardline novelist, some places will accept a sample chapter or two as short fiction entries.)

4. Journalism scholarships

Journalism scholarships are for students interested in pursuing a career in news, magazine, and/or online journalism. These scholarship applications almost always ask for writing samples to show the candidate’s interest. Depending on the organization, they may prefer topical news reports, informative articles, thinkpieces, or a mix. Some journalism scholarships provide a prompt and ask applicants to write a new article, but the focus is usually on samples. Speaking of which…

5. Portfolio scholarships 

Portfolio scholarships are the most rigorous kind of writing scholarship, requiring a substantial body of work from each applicant — usually 5-10 pieces of writing, if not more. The upside is that awards for portfolio scholarships tend to be pretty sizable, and may even cover your entire tuition!

If you decide to apply to a portfolio scholarship, make sure you have several strong pieces of work in your oeuvre, and consider writing a few new pieces as well. What you shouldn’t do is rush through a dozen new pieces to throw together as a portfolio. If you don’t have samples at the ready from previous assignments or projects, you’ll be better off applying to a less intensive writing scholarship.

Why apply to writing scholarships?

Applying to writing scholarships is a huge undertaking, especially if you’re pursuing multiple scholarships at once. It can sometimes feel like the effort isn’t worth it, or that you have little chance of actually winning any awards. But in truth, submitting to writing scholarships is one of the best investments you can make in your education, your creative writing skills, and your professional life.

Scholarships for larger amounts do attract more applicants, but that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to land — only that you have to work a little harder to stand out. And you can definitely sway the odds in your favor by applying to lots of small scholarships ($500 or less) for which you’ll have fewer competitors. Remember that every little bit helps! For example, if you plan on taking out student loans, even a $500 scholarship could save you much more in interest down the line.

Another compelling reason to apply to writing scholarships is that oftentimes, you’ve already done the work, or the work required is minimal. For scholarships that require writing samples, you’ll simply submit what you’ve already written in the past — and even for scholarships with specific prompts, you rarely have to write more than a couple of pages. If you were seriously committed, you could apply to a scholarship every day, spending a single concentrated evening on each application.

Jumping off that thought, as English majors love to say: the more writing scholarships you apply for, the better a writer you’ll become. Writing tons of scholarship essays will make you a much more creative and efficient writer. Not only will this help with your personal writing projects, but it will also be invaluable to your education and even your career! Writing is a crucial skill for every major — you’ll always have to write papers and emails to professors, after all — and even if you don’t plan to pursue a writing-based job, you'll still need writing skills to polish your résumé.

Finally, remember that there’s a writing scholarship out there for everyone, no matter what your interests or intended field. Carefully read the rules

The last thing you need is to be disqualified from winning a scholarship because you didn’t do the right thing. 

Start early

Don’t wait until the last minute to start researching and applying for scholarships. Give yourself plenty of time to work through the process. 

Get to know the provider

Think of the scholarship provider as your target audience. You want to tailor your essay to impress them, so do your research. What kinds of candidates are they looking for? What causes do they support? Dig deep for the information you need!

Think about who you are, what you want to say, and how to appeal to the scholarship committee. Write everything down and then choose the best ideas. 

The scholarship committee will be reviewing many applications. How can you make yours unforgettable? Highlight your strongest assets, share hard lessons if they showcase your growth as a person and/or student, and be honest. Never lie in a scholarship essay!

Be professional

Consider this the most important academic paper you’ve ever written. Don’t use slang or casual language. Submit a properly formatted essay that’s been well-edited and proofread by multiple people.

Pierson Family Scholarship for U.S. Studies

The Cameron Impact Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition, impact-driven scholarship awarded annually to 10-15 highly accomplished high school students in their academics and extracurricular activities.

Eligibility: The Cameron Impact Scholarship applicants must maintain a minimum, cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.7/4.0, be a full citizen of the United States of America, be a high school student graduating in 2024, and are planning to enroll in full-time courses at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university for the full academic year starting Fall 2024. 

The Gates Scholarship  

The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly competitive, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority high school seniors from low-income households.  

Reward Amount: Full cost of attendance, including tuition, other fees, room, board, books, and transportation, and may include other personal costs (not already covered by other financial aid contributions). 

Eligibility: Students must be high school seniors, Pell-eligible, US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents from at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American. Students must also be enrolling in a full-time, four-year degree program at a US-accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university. Please note: American Indians/Alaska Natives will need proof of tribal enrollment.  

Stitt Family Aeronautics Aerospace & Aviation Scholarship  

Recognizing the financial challenges students face due to the high costs of both tuition and practical aeronautical experience, this scholarship is designed to support those with a passion for aeronautical engineering, aerospace, and aviation who need financial assistance. 

Eligibility: Any high school or undergraduate student in California or Colorado with a GPA of 3.5 or higher may apply. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be pursuing studies in aviation, aerospace, or aeronautics. 

The Coolidge Scholarship  

A full-ride presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. The scholarship is based on academic excellence, an interest in public policy, and an appreciation for Coolidge values. 

Reward Amount: Full tuition 

Eligibility: For the 2023-24 Coolidge Scholarship, eligible applicants are high school juniors or equivalent home-schooled students planning to enroll full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university as undergraduates for the first time in fall 2025. This includes juniors taking college courses. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents by the scholarship deadline and cannot be immediate family members of current employees or trustees of the Coolidge Scholars Program or the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation. 

QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship    

The QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship grants early admission to one of QuestBridge's college partners with a full four-year scholarship valued at over $200,000. It is offered as part of a generous financial aid package that covers the costs, including tuition and fees, housing and food, books and supplies, and travel expenses in those cases.  

Award Amount: Full four-year scholarship valued at over $200,000 

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants graduating from high school during or before the summer of 2024 and plan to enroll in college in the fall of 2024 must be ranked in the top 5-10% of their graduating class to qualify for the Match Scholarship and apply in Fall 2023. No minimum GPA is required. However, having a 4.0 straight-A record in your most challenging classes (including honors and AP) will be considered. 

Florida Bright Futures: Florida Academic Scholarship  

The Florida Academic Scholar (FAS) is the most competitive and generous Bright Futures scholarship, offering funding for up to five years after high school graduation, covering a maximum of 120 semester hours towards completing a first baccalaureate degree. 

Reward Amount: Full funding 

Eligibility: This scholarship requires a minimum 3.50 weighted GPA, 100 service or paid work hours, completion of 16 high school course credits at a Florida public high school and achieving a minimum ACT/SAT score by June 30th of the high school graduation year. Applicants must also submit a Florida Financial Aid Application no later than August 31 after high school graduation. 

Evans Scholars Foundation  

The Evans Scholarship provides full tuition and housing for caddies with significant academic achievements and financial need. Eligibility hinges on a robust caddie history, strong academics, financial need, and excellent character.  

Eligibility: The scholarship requires applicants to have a solid caddie background with at least two years of regular, successful caddying and to continue caddying at their sponsoring club during the application year. Candidates must have achieved above a B average in college preparatory courses by the end of their junior year in high school. Demonstrated financial need is essential, along with exemplary character, integrity, and leadership qualities. 

The Janet S. Dicke Scholarship  

The Janet S. Dicke Scholarship requires applicants to be full-time U.S. high school seniors committed to obtaining a bachelor's degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, upon graduation. 

Reward Amount: $25,000 

Eligibility: To be eligible for this opportunity, candidates must be full-time U.S. high school seniors committed to earning a bachelor's degree at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, right after graduation. Applicants should demonstrate significant financial need, with a family income of $65,000 or less, show resilience in overcoming challenges, maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA, and be U.S. citizens. 

The Daniel Gerber Sr, Medallion Scholarship  

The Daniel Gerber, Sr. Medallion Scholarship stands out for its dedication to the Newaygo County community in Michigan, offering financial support to students from designated local school districts and extending eligibility to home-schooled students within the area.  

Reward Amount: $11,500 

Eligibility: High school seniors from Fremont HS, Grant HS, Hesperia HS, Newaygo HS, White Cloud HS, or those home-schooled in Newaygo County with a GPA of 3.71 or above (using the higher of weighted or unweighted) are eligible. They must plan to enroll in an accredited U.S. post-secondary program leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree or a vocational/technical program for a certificate. However, students intending to join federal military or maritime academies and foreign exchange students are not eligible to apply. 

United States Senate Youth Program Scholarship  

The United States Senate Youth Program offers multiple scholarships worth up to $10,000 to junior and senior high school students pursuing a career in government and/or politics. Winners will have the opportunity to participate in Washington Week in Washington D.C., where they can participate in and witness official meetings with Senate leaders, Supreme Court justices, and other political officials.  

Reward Amount: Awards worth up to $10,000 

Eligibility: Applicants must be high school juniors and seniors, US citizens or permanent residents, and have a minimum 3.7 GPA. 

New Jersey First Generation Scholarship  

Drawing from personal experience as first-generation college graduates who overcame financial hardships to complete our education in New Jersey, the Diaz family established this scholarship. This initiative awards two deserving first-generation college students in New Jersey, aiming to provide them with the same opportunities that paved the way for their successful careers. 

Reward Amount: $2,845 

Eligibility: Applicants must be first-generation high school seniors or undergraduate students with a 3.5 GPA or higher. 

P&J Homestead “God Walks” Scholarship  

This scholarship is designed to support students who are motivated by their faith to serve their communities, recognizing that such service can be incredibly rewarding and beneficial for all involved.

Eligibility: To apply for this scholarship, you should be a Christian high school senior from New Jersey with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. 

Kristen McCartney Perseverance Scholarship  

The Kristen McCartney Perseverance Scholarship was established in memory of Kristen McCartney, a cherished individual who, despite her epilepsy, led a fulfilling life filled with competitive soccer, work, travel, and cherished moments with loved ones. This scholarship aims to honor Kristen's spirit by supporting female students from North Carolina who embody passion and perseverance in their pursuit of higher education.

Eligibility: To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be female high school juniors or seniors residing in North Carolina, maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above, and have a background in volunteer or non-profit activities. 

Spirit of Wenatchee Aviation Scholarship  

This scholarship is designed to support students pursuing higher education in the rapidly expanding field of aviation, which offers diverse career paths, including piloting, aeronautical engineering, mechanical and avionics technology, and air traffic control.  

Award Amount: $1,460 

Eligibility Requirements: This scholarship is open to high school juniors and seniors or undergraduate students in Washington with a GPA of 3.5 or higher pursuing studies in aviation. 

Evan James Vaillancourt Memorial Scholarship  

Evan James Vaillancourt, an Airborne Combat Medic in the U.S. Army, was deeply committed to aiding others and aspired to further his medical career as a Trauma Nurse. This scholarship is dedicated to providing disadvantaged girls with the financial support needed to attend college, recognizing the transformative power of higher education in offering career opportunities and fostering individuals who can make significant global contributions.  

Reward Amount: $500 

Eligibility: This scholarship is available to low-income, female-identifying high school or undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. 

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship  

The Elks Most Valuable Students Scholarship is a national foundation that invests in the improvement of their local communities. Each year, the scholarship awards 500 four-year scholarships to highly qualified students who meet their criteria and then some. The scholarships range anywhere between $1,000 and $7,500 per year.  

Reward Amount: $1,000 - $7,500 

Eligibility: Applicants must be high school seniors and US citizens. 

The Flinn Scholarship  

The Flinn Scholarship not only covers the full cost of undergraduate tuition, fees, housing, and meals at Arizona's public universities, valued at over $130,000, but also extends support to scholars' personal and professional lives post-graduation. Benefits include funding for international study experiences, membership in a community of over 700 scholars, access to honors college amenities, and personal mentoring from leading faculty and professionals. 

Eligibility: To qualify for the Flinn Scholarship, candidates must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents by the application deadline and have resided in Arizona for the two years prior to university entry. Generally, applicants should have a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA, be in the top 5% of their graduating class (if ranked) and show leadership in extracurricular activities. While SAT or ACT scores are required, there is no minimum score threshold for application. 

The Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarship  

The Sunflower Initiative’s scholarship was founded in 2010 by alumnae and friends of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and has since expanded to include supporters of other women’s colleges. Named in honor of Harriet Fitzgerald, a notable alumna, the scholarship aims to financially assist a promising young woman in attending a women’s college. 

Reward Amount: $10,000 

Eligibility: Applicants must be women aiming to attend a U.S. or Canadian women's college. Eligible candidates should have a strong high school record, excellent references, a commitment to contributing to society, and demonstrate leadership and a wide range of interests. Preferred applicants will have at least a 3.7 unweighted GPA and a minimum SAT score of 1350 or ACT score of 27 (with no ACT score below 25). Eligibility extends to graduating high school seniors, gap year students, women restarting college after leaving in their first semester, and high school students who have taken college courses. Women who have completed a semester or more of college are ineligible. 

National Merit Scholarships  

National Merit Scholarships offer 7,140 merit scholarships of three types. Approximately 740 scholarships will be awarded in 2025. Please note: though NMS offers different types of scholarships, students cannot receive more than one monetary award from NMSC. 

Eligibility: Applicants must be a high school student in the US or US territory, a US citizen or permanent resident, graduating by 2025, plan on attending college no later than the fall of 2025, and taking the 2023 PSAT/NMSQT. 

The Carsons Scholars Fund  

The Carson Scholars Fund supports students K-12 who are committed to serving their communities and excel academically with awards of $1,000. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic achievements and humanitarian qualities.  

Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited K-12 school in the US, with a minimum 3.75 GPA, and nominated by an educator at their school. 

National Honor Society Scholarships  

The National Honor Society Scholarships aim to award outstanding high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence, dedication to community service, leadership, and dedication to their studies. The NHS rewards 600 students with scholarships ranging anywhere from $3,500 to $25,00, but only one lucky student will receive the $25,000. 

Reward Amount: Up to $25,000 

Eligibility: Applicants must be high school seniors graduating at the end of the current academic year, a current member of a National Honor Society chapter, an NHS student, and pursuing a degree at an accredited U.S. college or university. 

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship  

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship is a highly selective program that awards high school seniors who demonstrate academic excellence. The JKC Foundation values leadership and community service and is looking for students who share that same vision. Along with financial aid, the foundation offers college-prep advising and networking opportunities for winners, as well. 

Reward Amount: Up to $55,000 

Eligibility: Applicants must be high school seniors with leadership skills, community service experiences, and a minimum 3.95 GPA. 

Hagan Scholarship  

The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship. Those who successfully finish their four-year undergraduate program are eligible to apply for the Hagan Graduate Scholarship, which extends support for up to four more semesters. 

Reward Amount: up to $7,500 a semester 

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or Green Card holders and attend a high school in the U.S., including public, private, charter, magnet, or STEM schools. They should be part of their high school's graduating class with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Following graduation, they must enroll in an accredited four-year, not-for-profit college or university for the upcoming fall semester and aim to graduate within four years or complete an equivalent professional program. Applicants selected as Finalists must provide a copy of their FAFSA Submission Summary. Applicants must apply for Federal and State grants if eligible and must not have a felony conviction. Applicant’s Adjusted Gross Household Income reported for Federal Income Tax Purposes must not have exceeded $100,000.  

PLEXUSS 3.5 GPA Scholarship  

The 3.5 GPA Scholarship, offered by the PLEXUSS Foundation, is open to students in the United States. Applicants are required to submit a 250-500 word response to one of the given prompts, which cover topics such as the importance of a holistic approach in college admissions, the role of academic performance in the application process, the definition of success, the value of hard work, and the qualities of a good student in various contexts. This scholarship provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their academic journey and personal achievements while competing for financial support.  

Reward Amount: up to $250 

Eligibility: Applicants must have a 3.5 GPA and a completed PLEXUSS profile.

Charles B. Staats Memorial Foundation Scholarship

The mission of the Charles B. Staats Memorial Foundation is to inspire and empower high school seniors to become future leaders and active members of their community by serving as swim coaches to youth and adults in their communities.

About the scholarship

The Charles B. Staats Memorial Foundation (CBSMF) Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior, who is also a swim coach.   The Scholarship is open to any student in the US who meets the criteria. The CBSMF Scholarship was specifically created to honor the love of coaching and acknowledge the importance of coaching in a swimmer's life.  CBSMF believes that the focus, dedication and hard work required by coaching translates to focus, dedication and success in other areas of life. 

The scholarship will be awarded to a well rounded student who cares about academics and shows leadership in the community.  Most of all, we want a student who loves being a swim coach.  

The CBSMF Scholarship award may be used towards the costs of:  tuition, books, room and board and mandatory school fees.  The Scholarship will be eligible for renewal each year in the same amount awarded in year 1, for up to a maximum of 4 years, contingent upon the student meeting the Board's annual conditions as outlined in the executed Annual Scholarship Agreement with student.  The anticipated award for 2024 will be $3,000.00 per year.*

Application Criteria  

• Completed Application
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 (unweighted)
• Swim coach experience for at least 2 years (must be a swim coach the summer following high school graduation)
• One swimming reference letter (for example, from a swim coach or leader in community-no family members, please)
• One other reference letter (no family members please)
• Copy of SAT/ACT scores (in the event you are not required to take these exams, please contact us via email)
• Official high school transcript
• Proof of Acceptance to an accredited 4-year college or university

Note that the CBSMF Board reserves the right to request additional information from scholarship applicants in the event more information is necessary to determine a Scholarship recipient for the year.

AFA Chapter Awards $8,000 in Scholarships to Texas High Schoolers

AFA’s Northeast Texas Chapter 416 presented $8,000 in scholarships to 10 students from four different schools in their area. 

The Chapter generates a military-themed statement each year and asks students to produce a two-page essay and defend their position. Educators, professionals, and members from the Chapter read select 10 winning students. The top three students receive scholarships worth $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000, and an additional seven receive scholarships worth $500.

The scholarships are funded by long-standing donors and community partners, including the Lt. Col. John Murray family; Dr. Jerry Ransom; the McCasland family who donates in honor of their parents, Chief Master Sgt. Bobby & Louise McCasland; and more than 60 community partners.

This year’s prompt was “Hypersonic Weapons: Why the need for speed?” There was a total of 37 essays on the topic submitted from 10 different schools.

This year’s first-place recipient was Asia Chen, a senior at Sulphur Springs High School in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Chen is a member of multiple U.I.L. academics teams (Calculator Applications, Editorial Writing, Science, and Mathematics), band, Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Leadership, Student Council, HOSA, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Key Club. Chen plans to major in biology or neuro/cognitive science in college. She was recently accepted to MIT.

“The $2,000 scholarship will hopefully help, and if I can work additional support, I hope to attend MIT,” said Chen.

Chen said she learned about AFA’s contest through Gail Herman, her English teacher at Sulphur Springs High School. Herman has her class do the annual contest to challenge them to write and learn about something they may never come across.

“Hypersonic weapons are not something most of us in Sulphur Springs think about,” said Herman at the Chapter’s “Inspire & Impact” event on March 22. The event was held with community partners, donors, business leaders, and college professors, to inform people about chapter programs.

AFA’s Northeast Texas Chapter 416 is working hard to inspire students and expose them to STEM and the importance of military areas critical to our nation. As part of the new AFA’s new recruiting efforts, the 2025 essay prompt will be “Manning military services: Volunteers, Draft, or Other, and Why?”   The goal is to inspire students to explore how our military and Air & Space Forces positions are filled. With the Air Force not meeting their enlisted accession’s goal in 2023, it is important to ensure our youth realize the military is a viable venture or career and that defense of our nation is important.
