character analysis essay example

In this post, I’m going to explain to you clearly and in a step-by-step way how to conduct a character analysis.

1. What is a Character Analysis Essay?

Let’s get you started with some really simple details about what a character analysis is:

  • A Quick Definition: A character analysis essay zooms-in on a character in a book, movie or even real life. It provides what we sometimes call a ‘sketch’ of a character.
  • The Purpose of a Character Analysis: The purpose of a character analysis is to reveal interesting details about the character that might contain a broader moral message about the human condition. For example, Atticus Finch is not just a lawyer in To Kill a Mockingbird. Rather, he provides us with a moral message about the importance of doing what you believe is right even though you know you will likely fail.

2. What is the best Character Analysis Essay Format?

Character analysis essays do not have just one format.

However, let me offer some advice that might act as a character analysis essay outline or ‘checklist’ of possible things you could discuss:

1. Start with the Simple Details.

You can start a character analysis by providing a simple, clear description of who your character is. Look at some basic identity traits such as:

  • Race (if relevant)
  • Social class (if relevant)
  • Protagonist or Antagonist? A protagonist is the character who is our central character in the plot; the antagonist is often the protagonist’s opponent or challenger.
  • Major or minor character?

2. What are the character’s distinctive personality features?

Your character might have some really clearly identifiable character traits. It’s best to highlight in your character analysis the exact traits that this character possesses. Some common character traits include:

I recommend you take a moment to write down what you think the top 3 to 5 words are that you’d use to explain your character’s personality traits. These will be important to discuss throughout your character analysis.

Sometimes a character may start out with some personality traits, but change over the course of the text. This is quite common; and one clear example of this is Lady Macbeth she deteriorates from a cutthroat power player to a guilt ridden shell of a person roaming the halls of the castle. This dramatic character change is something that makes her very interesting, and is worthy of discussion!

3. What are the character’s key relationships?

Does your character have a close relationship with a certain person in the storyline?

You might want to discuss the character’s relationships as a part of your character analysis. These relationships may reveal some key personality traits of your character.

For example, in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Horatio is the loyal offsider to Hamlet. Through his actions in staying by Hamlet through thick and thin, we learn that he is a deeply loyal character.

Examining the character’s relationships with their friends and foes therefore is very useful for digging deeper into who this character actually is, and what personality traits they have when they are put to the test within the narrative.

4. What are the character’s motivations?

Another thing you might want to examine are the character’s motivations . What do they desire most in the world? Some common motivations for characters in stories are:

  • A simple life
  • To serve others

This list really could be endless, but I hope the above examples give you a bit of an idea of the sorts of traits to look out for. By mentioning and examining the motivations of the character, we will come closer and closer to learning exactly what moral message this character might be able to tell us.

5. What are the character’s key conflicts?

Stories tend to have a beginning, a complication, and a resolution.

The complication involves conflicts and challenges that need to be overcome. For Edmund in Narnia, it’s cowardice. For Romeo and Juliet, it’s the conflict between love and family loyalty. Here’s some other common conflicts for characters:

  • Whether to stay loyal to a friend;
  • To overcome obstacles to love;
  • To seek a way out of a challenging situation;
  • To escape war or poverty;
  • To persevere through imprisonment;
  • To overcome personal fear

Again, this list is endless.

Knowing the character’s core conflict gets us even closer to knowing the moral that the character is trying to teach us.

For example, in Romeo and Juliet, the challenge of Romeo and Juliet being together despite their families’ objections teaches us something. Personally, I believe it teaches us the importance of letting go of old grudges in order to let love bloom.

This moral lesson was taught to us through conflict: namely, the conflict that Romeo and Juliet were right in the center of.

6. What are the character’s epiphanies?

Sometimes a character has an epiphany. This often happens towards the end of the story and helps the character overcome the challenge or conflict that we discussed in the point above.

Here’s an example of an epiphany:

  • In the Lion King, Simba runs away from his tribe to live in exile. After a chance encounter with his childhood friend Nala, he has an epiphany that he has a duty to his tribe. This leads him back home to fight Scar and return freedom to Pride Rock.

Not all characters have an epiphany. But, if they do, I strongly encourage you to write about it in your character analysis.

7. Examine the moral message the character teaches us.

Finally, conclude by examining the moral message behind the character. Nearly every character has something to teach the reader. Authors put a lot of thought into creating complex characters with whom we can relate. We relate to the character and say “wow, they taught me a lesson about something!”

The lesson might be something like:

  • Money doesn’t buy happiness;
  • Loyalty to family comes above all else;
  • Love gives life meaning;
  • Honesty is always the best policy

This is the core of your character analysis essay. If you can pick out exactly what moral message the character teaches you, you’ll be well on your way to writing a strong character analysis.

Below I’m going to give you some examples to help you out. I know it can be hard to really get your head around a character, so sometimes the best thing is to look at some samples!

3. Here’s 13 Example Character Analysis Essay Ideas.

Most times when we create a character analysis, we’re exploring the deeper moral stories / aspects of humanity. Here’s some example ideas. I’ve tried to outline in less than a paragraph exactly what your key point will be about each character:

  • Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird: A character who teaches us a lesson about standing up for what’s right, even if you know you’re likely to lose.
  • Huckleberry Finn from Huckleberry Finn: A character who reveals our inner desire for freedom from the elements of society that constrain us.
  • Dudley from Harry Potter: A character whose personality tells us a cautionary tale of the perils of middle-class narcissism, parents’ desire to wrap their children in cotton wool, and the lack of discipline we perceive in contemporary childhoods.
  • Jack from Lord of the Flies: A character who represents the innate desire for power that seems to lurk not too far from the surface of the human condition. When social structures are stripped away, he quickly reverts to violence and superstition to assert control over his peers.
  • Lady Macbeth from Macbeth: Lady Macbeth teaches us a valuable lesson about the perils of contravening our own morality. She starts out a cutthroat killer but is increasingly consumed by the guilt of her own actions. While we may be able to escape full punishment from outside forces, it is the inner guilt that might eat us away to our last.
  • The Boy who Cried Wolf: The boy who cried wolf is a character whose fatal flaw is his desire for attention and adulation. His repeated attempts at gaining the attention of others leads the townspeople to no longer take him seriously, which causes him harm when he actually needs the villagers to take him seriously to save his life. He teaches us the virtue of honest and humility.
  • Nick Carraway from the Great Gatsby: Nick shows us all the inner conflict between the trappings of wealth, glamor and spectacle; and the desire for simplicity, honesty and community. He is drawn by the dazzling world of East Egg, New York, but by the end of the novel sees live in East Egg as shallow and lacking the moral depth of his former life in small town Minnesota.
  • Alice from Alice in Wonderland: In many ways, Alice represents the child within all of us. She is a character of goodwill to all and who looks upon the world (or, rather, Wonderland) with awe. Travelling with a cadre of flawed characters, she learns with them the importance of seeking strength from within.
  • The Nurse in Romeo and Juliet: Like many Shakespearian characters, the nurse’s role is both as loyal confidante to a central character and comic relief. Shakespeare uses minor characters to regale his crowd and sustain viewer interest between scenes.
  • Lucy in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Lucy represents a surprising character whose youthfulness and small stature make her an underrated character by all around her. Nonetheless, she possesses within the bravery and loyalty necessary to carry out the quest for Aslan. Lucy represents the goodness in children and, by extension, all of mankind.
  • Anne in Anne of Green Gables: Anne occupies the typical literary role of young girls in many classical novels: she represents innocence and wonder, and her contraventions of rules are seen through a prism of childhood innocence. This frames Anne not as a deviant but as a precious soul.
  • Simba from The Lion King: Simba’s story follows his struggle with growing up, embracing his destiny and duty to his family, or fleeing towards freedom and a ‘no worries’ lifestyle. Simba flees Pride Rock and goes through an existential crisis with his existentialist friends Timon and Pumba. When he runs into an old childhood friend, he realizes how shallow his new carefree life has become and reflects upon his obligation to his community back home.
  • Woody from Toy Story: Woody starts out Andy’s favorite toy, but when Andy gets a new flashier toy, Woody’s status amongst the toys falls apart. Woody’s key character challenge is to learn to be humble and inclusive living within the group. By the end of the movie, Woody realizes his duty to love and serve Andy is more important than his own status within the group.

4. Here’s an Example Template for your own Character Analysis Essay

Feel free to use this brainstorming template to get you started with your character analysis essay. I recommend filling out as many of these key points as you can, but remember sometimes you might have to skip some of these points if they’re not relevant to your character.

Once you’ve brainstormed the ideas in Table 1, follow the character analysis essay outline in Table 2 to stay on track for your character analysis essay. Do remember though that each assignment will be different and you should adjust it based on your teacher’s requirements.

Here’s Table 1, which is a brainstorming template for your character analysis essay:

And here’s Table 2, which is an example character analysis essay outline. This is for a 1500 word character analysis essay. Change the word count according to how long your essay should be:

Character analyses can be really tough. You need to know your character really well. You might even need to re-read (or watch) your book or movie a few times over to get to know the character really well.

I recommend when you re-read or re-watch the text before you write your character analysis, have the checklist I provided above handy and take notes. Then, use the essay outline I provided above to put all of those notes together into a clear and thorough final character analysis essay.

essay on a favourite character

How to Write a Character Analysis Essay

essay on a favourite character

A character analysis essay is a challenging type of essay students usually write for literature or English courses. In this article, we will explain the definition of character analysis and how to approach it. We will also touch on how to analyze characters and guide you through writing character analysis essays.

Typically, this kind of writing requires students to describe the character in the story's context. This can be fulfilled by analyzing the relationship between the character in question and other personas. Although, sometimes, giving your personal opinion and analysis of a specific character is also appropriate.

Let's explain the specifics of how to do a character analysis by getting straight to defining what is a character analysis. Our term paper writers will have you covered with a thorough guide!

What Is a Character Analysis Essay?

The character analysis definition explains the in-depth personality traits and analyzes characteristics of a certain hero. Mostly, the characters are from literature, but sometimes other art forms, such as cinematography. In a character analysis essay, your main job is to tell the reader who the character is and what role they play in the story. Therefore, despite your personal opinion and preferences, it is really important to use your critical thinking skills and be objective toward the character you are analyzing. A character analysis essay usually involves the character's relationship with others, their behavior, manner of speaking, how they look, and many other characteristics.

Although it's not a section about your job experience or education on a resume, sometimes it is appropriate to give your personal opinion and analysis of a particular character.

What Is the Purpose of a Character Analysis Essay

More than fulfilling a requirement, this type of essay mainly helps the reader understand the character and their world. One of the essential purposes of a character analysis essay is to look at the anatomy of a character in the story and dissect who they are. We must be able to study how the character was shaped and then learn from their life.

A good example of a character for a character analysis essay is Daisy Buchanan from 'The Great Gatsby.' The essay starts off by explaining who Daisy is and how she relates to the main character, Jay Gatsby. Depending on your audience, you need to decide how much of the plot should be included. If the entire class writes an essay on Daisy Buchanan, it is logical to assume everyone has read the book. Although, if you know for certain that your audience has little to no knowledge of who she is, it is crucial to include as much background information as possible.

After that, you must explain the character through certain situations involving her and what she said or did. Make sure to explain to the reader why you included certain episodes and how they have showcased the character. Finally, summarize everything by clearly stating the character's purpose and role in the story.

Different types of characters.

To make it clear how a reader learns about a character in the story, you should note that several characters are based on their behaviors, traits, and roles within a story. We have gathered some of them, along with vivid examples from famous literature and cinema pieces:

How to Write a Character Analysis Essay

Types of Characters

  • Major : These are the main characters; they run the story. Regularly, there are only one or two major characters. Major characters are usually of two types: the protagonist – the good guy, and the antagonist: the bad guy or the villain.
  • Protagonist (s) (heroes): The main character around whom most of the plot revolves.

For example, Othello from Shakespeare's play, Frodo from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, Harry Potter from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, and Elizabeth Bennet from 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen.

  • Antagonist (s): This is the person that is in opposition to the protagonist. This is usually the villain, but it could also be a natural power, set of circumstances, majestic being, etc.

For example, Darth Vader from the Star Wars series by George Lucas, King Joffrey from Game of Thrones, or the Wicked Queen from 'Snow White and Seven Dwarfs.'

  • Minor : These characters help tell the major character's tale by letting them interact and reveal their personalities, situations, and/or stories. They are commonly static (unchanging). The minor characters in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien would be the whole Fellowship of the ring. In their own way, each member of the Fellowship helps Frodo get the ring to Mordor; without them, the protagonist would not be a protagonist and would not be able to succeed. In the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, minor characters are Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. They consistently help Harry Potter on his quests against Voldemort, and, like Frodo, he wouldn't have succeeded without them.

On top of being categorized as a protagonist, antagonist, or minor character, a character can also be dynamic, static, or foil.

  • Dynamic (changing): Very often, the main character is dynamic.
An example would also be Harry Potter from the book series by J.K. Rowling. Throughout the series, we see Harry Potter noticing his likeness to Voldemort. Nevertheless, Harry resists these traits because, unlike Voldemort, he is a good person and resists any desire to become a dark wizard.
  • Static (unchanging): Someone who does not change throughout the story is static.
A good example of a static character is Atticus Finch from “How to Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. His character and views do not change throughout the book. He is firm and steady in his beliefs despite controversial circumstances.
  • Foils : These characters' job is to draw attention to the main character(s) to enhance the protagonist's role.
‍ A great example of a foil charact e r is Dr. Watson from the Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle.

How to Analyze a Character

While preparing to analyze your character, make sure to read the story carefully.

  • Pay attention to the situations where the character is involved, their dialogues, and their role in the plot.
  • Make sure you include information about what your character achieves on a big scale and how they influence other characters.
  • Despite the categories above, try thinking outside the box and explore your character from around.
  • Avoid general statements and being too basic. Instead, focus on exploring the complexities and details of your character(s).

How to Write a Character Analysis Essay?

To learn how to write a character analysis essay and gather a more profound sense of truly understanding these characters, one must completely immerse themself in the story or literary piece.

  • Take note of the setting, climax, and other important academic parts.
  • You must be able to feel and see through the characters. Observe how analysis essay writer shaped these characters into life.
  • Notice how little or how vast the character identities were described.
  • Look at the characters' morals and behaviors and how they have affected situations and other characters throughout the story.
  • Finally, observe the characters whom you find interesting.

How Do You Start a Character Analysis Essay

When writing a character analysis essay, first, you have to choose a character you'd like to write about. Sometimes a character will be readily assigned to you. It's wise to consider characters who play a dynamic role in the story. This will captivate the reader as there will be much information about these personas.

Read the Story

You might think that if you already have read the book, there is no need to do so again; however, now that you know the character you would like to focus on, reading it again will have plenty of benefits. It will give you an opportunity to be more precise while reading the scenes that relate directly to your character and are important for his/her analysis. While reading the book, pay attention to every tiny detail to make sure you grasp the whole array of your character's traits.

Consider the following things:

  • What specific descriptions does the author provide for each character?

For example, when J.K. Rowling describes Harry Potter for the first time, she describes his clothes as old and oversized, his hair untidy, and his glasses as broken. It might seem just like a simple description, but she expresses compassion and pity for an orphan neglected by his only relatives.

  • What kinds of relationships does your character have with others?

Think about how Harry builds up his friendships with others. First, he and Ron do not like Hermione because she acts like a know-it-all, but when she gets stuck in the dungeons with a horrendous troll, he rushes to save her regardless.

  • How do the actions of the character move the plot forward?

In 'The Philosopher's Stone,' Harry is very observant of any events taking place at school. He analyzes people's actions, which builds up the plot around the stone and its importance for the magical world.

Choose a Dynamic Character

Choosing a dynamic character is a great idea. This does not necessarily have to be the protagonist, but a character that undergoes many changes has grown throughout the story and is not boring and/or static. This gives you a perfect advantage to fully show the character and make your paper entertaining and engaging for the reader. If you choose a character that is not very dynamic, your essay might seem monotonous because your character will not end up doing much and will not be very involved in the story.

While you are reading, it is useful to take notes or highlight/underline any of the critical elements of the story. This will add depth to your character description(s). By providing vivid and specific examples, you connect your reader to the character, and the character comes alive in their eyes. Review your notes and formulate the main idea about your character when you're finished reading with your character in mind.

Make an initial draft while taking note of the character analysis essay outline provided by your instructor. You may follow the recommended character analysis essay format if you have not been provided with a sample.

Choose a Main Idea

While reading the story, make sure you keep track of your notes. It is a good idea to look at them, choose the ones that are the most representative of your character and find patterns. This will be your thesis. Then, you must support this idea with examples and situations involving your character.

If your character were Jem Finch from 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, the main idea would be how his personal character is shaped through racial conflicts, social inequalities, and internal struggles between public opinion, his own views, and what is actually right. Of all the characters that I’ve “met” through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be. They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them. I, too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life.

Both Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life. As an Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham, but soon I’ll be entering the adult world, a world in which I’m not yet prepared to lead.

I’m quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather, 40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving. I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families. Often when his bank could not justify a loan to someone in need, my grandfather made the loan from his own pocket. He is a real-life Moonlight Graham, a man who has shown me that characters like Dr. Graham and Mr. Finch do much much more than elicit tears and smiles from readers and movie watchers. Through him and others in my family I feel I have acquired the values and the burning desire to benefit others that will form the foundation for a great life. I also feel that that foundation is not enough. I do not yet have the sophistication, knowledge, and wisdom necessary to succeed as I want to in the adult world. I feel that University Harvard , above all others, can guide me toward the life of greatness that will make me the Attacus Finch of my town.

This essay is a great example of how to answer this question well. This applicant chose characters who demonstrated specific traits that reflect on his own personality. We believe that he is sincere about his choices because his reasons are personal (being from a small town, and so forth). He managed to tell us a good deal about himself, his values, and his goals while maintaining a strong focus throughout. He didn’t pick Napoleon or Abraham Lincoln, but clearly thought about his choice of characters.

Short Essay: My Favourite Book

A couple of short essay examples on my favourite book.

Table of Contents

My Favourite Book Essay Example 1

Books have a unique way of transporting the reader to a different world, and for me, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is one such book. This novel has been my favourite book for many years now. It explores various themes, including racial injustice, morality, and the loss of innocence. The characters in the novel are complex and well-developed, making it a must-read for anyone who loves literature. In this essay, I will discuss why “To Kill a Mockingbird” is my favourite book, and how it has impacted my life.

One of the most significant themes explored in “To Kill a Mockingbird” is racial injustice. The novel is set in the deep south of the United States during the 1930s, a time when racial segregation was rampant. The story follows the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. The way the trial is conducted and the verdict that is reached highlights the injustice that was prevalent during that time. Through the character of Atticus Finch, the novel shows the importance of standing up for what is right, even if it means going against societal norms. The theme of racial injustice is still relevant in today’s world, and “To Kill a Mockingbird” serves as a reminder of the need to fight against discrimination and prejudice.

Another theme explored in “To Kill a Mockingbird” is morality. The novel teaches valuable lessons about right and wrong, and the importance of empathy and understanding. Through the character of Atticus Finch, the novel shows the importance of treating everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their race or social status. The novel also highlights the need for courage and integrity, even in the face of adversity. The moral lessons taught in the novel are essential for everyone, and they have impacted my life greatly.

One of the things that make “To Kill a Mockingbird” such an intriguing read is the complex characters that are well-developed. The character of Scout Finch, the narrator of the story, grows and matures throughout the novel, and her perspectives on life change as she gains more understanding of the world around her. Atticus Finch, Scout’s father, is a complex character who is respected in the community for his honesty and integrity. The novel also explores the character of Boo Radley, who is misunderstood by the community but is ultimately shown to be kind-hearted. The characters in the novel are relatable, and their stories stay with the reader long after the novel has ended.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a timeless classic that has impacted many readers around the world. The novel explores themes of racial injustice, morality, and the loss of innocence, and the characters are complex and well-developed. The story teaches valuable lessons about right and wrong, and the importance of empathy and understanding. For me, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is more than just a book; it is a reminder of the need to stand up for what is right, and to treat everyone with respect and dignity.

My Favourite Book Essay Example 2

Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes, and throughout the years, I have read countless books that have captured my heart and imagination. However, out of all the books I have read, one stands out as my absolute favorite – and that is “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This book is a timeless classic that has touched the hearts of many, including myself. In this essay, I will be discussing the plot, the characters, and the themes explored in “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

The plot of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is centered around the life of a young girl named Scout Finch and her family, who live in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. The main conflict of the story arises when Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, a lawyer, is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who is falsely accused of raping a white woman. Throughout the book, we see how Atticus, Scout, and her brother Jem navigate the racial tensions in their town, and how they fight against the prejudices of their neighbors. The resolution of the story is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching, as we see the consequences of the trial and the impact it has on the Finch family.

The characters in “To Kill a Mockingbird” are some of the most memorable and well-developed characters in all of literature. Scout, the protagonist, is a young girl who is both curious and innocent, and her growth throughout the story is both inspiring and relatable. Jem, her older brother, is a caring and protective sibling who is forced to confront the harsh realities of the world around him. And of course, Atticus Finch, the wise and compassionate lawyer who serves as a moral compass for the entire town. Each character in the book is unique and multi-dimensional, and their interactions with each other create a rich and complex narrative.

The themes explored in “To Kill a Mockingbird” are numerous and thought-provoking. One of the main themes is the exploration of racial inequality and prejudice in the American South during the 1930s. Through the lens of Scout and her family, we see the devastating effects of racism on both the black and white communities in Maycomb. Another important theme is the idea of personal growth and empathy. Throughout the story, we see how Scout and Jem learn to understand and appreciate the perspectives of others, and how their experiences shape their understanding of the world.

In conclusion, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a book that has stood the test of time and continues to be relevant today. Its powerful themes and memorable characters have captured the hearts and minds of readers for generations, and it remains one of the most influential books in American literature. For me, it is not just a favorite book, but a book that has shaped my understanding of the world and inspired me to be a better person.

My Favourite Book Essay Example 3

Books have always been an integral part of my life. They are a source of knowledge, entertainment, and inspiration. Among the numerous books that I have read, one stands out as my favorite, and that is “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. Published in 1960, this novel has become a classic of modern American literature. It explores themes of racism, justice, and morality through the eyes of a young girl named Scout. In this essay, I will explain why this book is my favorite and why I recommend it to others.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is my favorite book because of its powerful message against racism. The novel is set in the deep south of America in the 1930s, a time when racial discrimination was rampant. The story follows the life of Scout, a young girl growing up in a small town. Her father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer who defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. The trial is a symbol of the deep-rooted racism in society and highlights the injustice that African Americans faced at the time. Through Scout’s innocent eyes, we see the reality of racism and its damaging effects on individuals and society as a whole.

Another reason why “To Kill a Mockingbird” is my favorite book is the well-developed characters. Each character is unique and has their own story to tell. Scout, the protagonist, is a feisty young girl who questions the world around her. Her brother Jem is a caring and protective sibling, while Atticus is a wise and compassionate father. The novel also features Boo Radley, a recluse who is misunderstood by the townspeople, and Tom Robinson, the black man who is wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit. The characters are so well-written that they come to life on the pages of the book, making the story both engaging and memorable.

Lastly, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is my favorite book because of its thought-provoking themes of morality and justice. The novel raises important questions about what is right and wrong, and how we should treat others. Atticus Finch’s character embodies the ideals of justice and fairness, and his words of wisdom have inspired many readers. The book also challenges the reader’s beliefs and values, making us reflect on our own attitudes towards race, prejudice, and discrimination.

In conclusion, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a timeless classic that has touched the hearts of many readers. Its themes of racism, justice, and morality are still relevant today, and the characters are unforgettable. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the complexities of the human experience and the importance of empathy and compassion. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves literature and wants to be inspired by a great story.

Essays About Character: Top 5 Examples and 9 Prompts

If you’re writing an essay about character, below are helpful examples of essays about character with prompts to inspire you further.

When we say that a person has character, we usually refer to one’s positive qualities such as moral fiber, spiritual backbone, social attitudes, mental strength, and beliefs. But not to be mistaken with mere personality, character goes beyond the sum of all good traits. Instead, it demonstrates and applies these qualities in interacting with people, acting on responsibilities, and responding to challenges.

Character, hence, cannot be evaluated by a single action or event. Instead, it manifests in a pattern and through consistency.

Read on to find essays and prompts to help you create an essay with rich insights.

1. How 5 CEOs Hire For Character by Chris Fields

2. the character of leadership by brian k. cooper et. al, 3. when proof of good moral character helps an immigration application—or doesn’t by ilona bray, j.d., 4. what are the 24 character strengths by sherri gordon, 5. the five character traits the best investors share by richard thalheimer , 9 writing prompts for essays about character, 1. what are your character strengths, 2. the importance of character, 3. how household chores develop a child’s character, 4. how challenges shape your character, 5. character education in schools, 6. character analysis, 7. character vs. personality , 8. why psychologists study character, 9. choosing people for your character reference  .

“You have to be a good person with a good heart. Of course, you have to be qualified, educated and skilled, that goes without saying – or it should – but your next candidate can’t be a bad person because CEOs are looking for character.”

The essay compiles insights from famous billionaire CEOs who underscore the importance of recruiting people with good character. It shows the upward trend among companies seeking qualifications beyond education and professional experience and looking more into the heart of people. You might also be interested in these essays about courage .

“…[L]eadership that achieves results goes beyond how to be, and becomes how to do; this type of leadership is all about character. So in other words, in order to get things done personally and organizationally, one first needs to get in touch with his or her character.”

Character in leadership could translate to benefits beyond the organization, society, or the world. The essay is based on a study of the three underlying dimensions of leadership character: universalism, transformation, and benevolence.

“Demonstrating good moral character is an extremely important part of many immigration cases, but it is not required in all of them. In fact, providing proof of your accomplishments to the court could hurt your immigration case in some instances.”

Showing good moral character is a common requirement for immigrants seeking to be naturalized citizens in a different country. This article gets into the nitty gritty on how one can best prove good moral character when facing immigration officers.

“Knowing a person’s character strengths provides a lens through which psychologists, educators, and even parents can see not only what makes a person unique, but also understand how to help that person build on those strengths to improve situations or outcomes.”

The concept of character strengths aims to help people focus on their strengths to lead healthy and happy life. Understanding character strengths meant being more equipped to use these strengths to one’s advantage, whether toward academic access or overcoming adversities.

“… [Y]ou have to be able to pick the right stocks. That’s where talent, intellect, knowledge and common sense come in. Of course, if you can’t control your emotions, and you get fearful and sell every time the market drops, all that talent, knowledge, intellect and common sense go out the window.”

Having an eye for the right stocks requires developing five character traits: talent, intellect, knowledge, common sense, and a bias to action. All these could be honed by sharpening one’s knowledge of the current news and financial trends. Developing character as a stock investor also requires a daily routine that allows one to exercise analytical skills.

Essay on “My Favourite Character in Fiction” for School, College Students, Long and Short English Essay, Speech for Class 10, Class 12, College and Competitive Exams.

My Favourite Character in Fiction

The character in fiction that attracts me is David Copperfield, created by Charles Dickens in his masterpiece David Copperfield. Like many fond parents Dickens says he has in his “heart of hearts a favourite child and his name is David Copperfield”.

David is born after his father’s death. His mother marries again. His step-father-Edward Murdstone does not show any kindness in his dealings with David. He sends the boy to Salem House. The Headmaster of the school is a bully and he makes David’s life there miserable. David leaves the school. His mother dies. Then Murdstone sends him as a labourer in the service of Murdstone and Grinby in London: His life there is extremely unhappy. He runs away from London and reaches the house of his father’s aunt Betsey Trotwood. She sends him for further education: to Canterbury. His life in this school is very happy: He marries Dora. She dies. David goes abroad. When he returns home, he has become famous as a writer. He marries Agnes as desired by his first wife and leads a very- married life.

It is the sincere narration of the autobiographical events that gives the novel realism and strength. The bitter experiences that smouldered the sensitive soul of young Dickens acquire a passionate intensity that remains unrivalled in the history of the English novel. David’s employment as a labourer in the service of Murdstone and Grinby reminds us of Dickens who was sent by his father at the age of eleven to a black ink factory to earn his living. Salem House, where David is sent by his step-father, resembles Wellington House Academy, where Dickens learned little. Mr. Micawber, like the novelist’s father John Dickens, is always in debt. David’s love for Dora is Dickens’s own love for Maria Beadnell. Betsey Trotwood, the fairy godmother hiding a soft heart beneath a harsh exterior resembles the novelist’s mother Elizabeth Dickens. Like David, Dickens becomes famous as a writer, works hard and makes his life prosperous. In fact, some critics think that certain details of the novelist’s own life that were not narrated by him to his biographer Forster find eloquent expression in the novel.

The robust optimism shown by David fascinates me. Misfortunes and suffering do not daunt him. He faces them calmly. His life gives me courage and self-confidence to face the battle of life. Winter is always followed by spring. This is what David’s life teaches me.

Every kid loves to watch cartoons and has one favourite cartoon character they adore. However, young kids may struggle to write about their favourite cartoon characters or form meaningful sentences. We have some simple tips, references, and paragraphs to help them write an interesting essay on their favourite cartoon character and understand essay structuring.

Kids can talk for hours about their favourite cartoon character. However, when it comes to writing an essay, they may struggle with what to write. Here are some key points that will help them write a great essay on their favourite cartoon character:

  • Give a brief introduction to the cartoon character.
  • Briefly explain the plot of the cartoon series.
  • Write about the role and characteristics of the cartoon character.
  • Write why you like this character.

Barbie is one of the most loved cartoon characters by most young kids. Here are a few lines that will help in writing an essay for classes 1 and 2 students on Barbie:

  • Barbie is the most popular fashion doll in the world.
  • It was created by Ruth Handler and manufactured by Mattel Inc.
  • There are many animated series, cartoons and films based on the life of Barbie, her family and her friends.
  • I love to watch Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures and Barbie: Life in a Dreamhouse series.
  • Barbie is a fashionable, sweet and intelligent girl.
  • The cartoon series shows the life of Barbie and her many adventures.
  • Apart from Barbie, some other important characters on the carton are Ken, Skipper, Stacie and Teresa.
  • The animated series is full of humorous situations where Barbie and her family tackle different problems they face.
  • I have two dolls, one Barbie and one Ken doll. I also have a barbie doll house.
  •  I love Barbie because she is always helping her family and her friends in any situation.

There would hardly be a child or adult who doesn’t love Mickey Mouse. Here is a paragraph on the world’s most popular cartoon character:

Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse is an iconic cartoon character. From small towns to big cities, Mickey Mouse is a household favourite in the world. The pet mouse drawing that Walt Disney created inspired Mickey Mouse’s character; he was the first cartoon character in the world to speak. The cute little mouse is featured in many cartoon shows and movies. Even after decades of telecasting, those shows are still popular. Mickey, his friend Pluto, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, etc., takes us on many fun adventures. The friendship and mutual love of Mickey Gang make the show popular. It teaches me that with our friends, we can overcome any trouble.

One of the favourite cartoon characters of Indian kids is Chota Bheem. Here’s an essay on this topic for young kids:

India is not far behind Western cartoons when it comes to creating fun and inspirational characters. Chota Bheem cartoon is a popular Indian cartoon show and character that I love the most. The show and characters take inspiration from the epic Mahabharat. However, it doesn’t follow the story of Mahabharat. Chota Bheem, together with his group of friends – Chutki, Raju and Jaggu, a monkey, teach us great things. They fight bad people together, destroy evil and stand for justice. Chota Bheem, though a kid, is very strong and intelligent. Through his intelligence, he helps everyone, even the bad kids who trouble him. Chota Bheem teaches us to be truthful, and bold, help everyone, fight evil and do good to everyone. The Chota Bheem cartoon show inspires me to be a good and smart kid like Chota Bheem.

my favourite cartoon character for kids - cindrella

This simple and easy essay will teach lower primary class kids the long sentence construction and structuring of essays:

Cinderella is the most popular princess in the cartoon world. The cartoon series is based on the folk tale ‘ The Little Glass Slipper’. There are many variations of the story of Cinderella in the world. The story is adapted into many books, films, and animation series. However, what I like the best are the movies and animation series made by Disney. Cinderella is often called a Disney princess.

Cinderella cartoon tells the story of a beautiful and poor girl. She lives with her evil stepmother and two sisters. Cinderella is very pretty with lovely long hair. Her gentle and loving nature makes everyone love her. But her family treats her very badly. Her step sisters are jealous of her beauty. So, her stepmother and sisters make her do all the housework. Even in the tattered clothes, Cinderella looks beautiful. The story talks about the magical meeting of Cinderella and the Prince. But they are separated, and the prince to find her, just has her glass slipper. And finally, through that slipper, Cinderella meets her prince and lives happily ever after.

I love the hopeful and positive story that inspires us to be always brave and good. Despite all her adversities, Cinderella never loses hope, sweetness, kindness and strength. She is cheerful even in her troubles. And through her strong spirit, she one day gets what she deserves, to be a princess. Even after becoming a princess, she doesn’t treat her family badly. Though a cartoon character, Cinderella teaches me to be always nice, polite, humble and hopeful. The message I get from watching Cinderella is that being nice and compassionate is not a weakness. Through their inner strength, good people can overcome any obstacle and become successful.

my favourite cartoon character for kids - tom and jerry

Writing essays on cartoon characters is a great way to teach sentence construction to young kids. Here is a short composition on Tom and Jerry for kids:

Tome and Jerry are the funniest of cartoon characters. The animation series shows the story of a pet cat Tom who has to chase out the naughty mouse Jerry. Jerry is always troubling Tom and stealing things from the house. Poor Tom is always trying to catch Jerry but always fails. Jerry, though naughty, is an intelligent mouse who at times, also helps Tom. And sometimes, even Tom helps Jerry when someone else troubles him. But soon, they are back to being enemies. The funny chase and run of these two characters is what makes this cartoon series stand out. Though Tom and Jerry are always fighting, their friendship is still evident. They teach me that we may fight with our friends, but when our friends need us, we should always be there for them.

Writing this essay presents a wonderful opportunity for children to express their views about their favourite character. Here is an essay on Doremon for kids:

I love to watch many cartoon shows. One of my most loved cartoon characters is Doremon. I love Doremon; though it is a Japanese animation character, I watch it in English translation. The story is about an intelligent earless robotic cat, Doremon. The robotic cat is from the 22nd century but comes back to the present time to help a young boy, Nobita Nobi. Nobita is weak in his studies and gets bullied all the time. Doremon protects Nobita, helps him in his studies and improves his life. I enjoy the numerous gadgets that Doremon carries. The friendship between the optimistic Doremon and cute Nobita teaches me to love all my friends.

As your kid writes a few lines on this topic, they learn to express their views, develop their sentence construction abilities, and improve their vocabulary. Through cartoons, kids learn many good things. When they are writing an essay on their favourite cartoon character, they get an opportunity to inspect those things in detail. Essay writing brings out their creativity, make them think about the topic and frames sentences in a structure. This helps your kid to improve their linguistic skills.

Kids have a good opportunity to visualise their favourite cartoon character and write down their feelings about that character when writing an essay about their favourite character. Essay writing helps in improving the writing skills of young kids.

My Favourite Cartoon – Essay 1

“Sometimes, the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.”

The cartoon has always been an important part of my lifestyle during childhood.  I always used to connect myself with the cartoon characters. It’s not only me who loved cartoons this much. There are lots of younger people across the world who love this illustration work. They personally love the fact that cartoons are stress relievers. The cartoon series not only meant to entertain us, but they play a very important role in teaching. We have also seen that nowadays, small kids are learning through cartoon animation. They find it very interesting and entertaining at the same time. I have a long list of my favorite cartoons, but I will share my top favorite cartoon series. Therefore, here are some of my favorite cartoon characters and series.

My Favourite Cartoon is Tom and Jerry

I would like to thank the creators of this sensational Cartoon Show “Tom and Jerry.” This show has a special place in my heart. It will be a lie if someone says that they don’t like Tom and Jerry. Well talking about the storyline of the show, Tom is the name of the pet of the house owner, and in that house, there is a mouse called jerry. Jerry is my favorite character. I find him cute. It has always been about the fight between Tom and Jerry. Jerry used to steal something, and Tom tries to catch him.

Jerry is very naughty and provoking. He always irritates tom. I loved to watch them fighting. Apart from that, they have symbolized the true meaning of friendship. When it comes to the common task, they have done it very significantly. I am sure that Tom and Jerry are the favorite cartoons of every age group. It is one of the most successful cartoon shows. It still has a huge fan base, and most of the people, including me, still like this funniest show.

My Favourite Cartoon is Doraemon

Doraemon is my 2nd favorite cartoon show.  He is a cat robot who has superpowers. He lives at nobita’s house. Nobita is a very lazy character but innocent. He always gets himself in trouble, and whenever he is in trouble, Doraemon will be there to help him. Nobita has a female friend named Shizuka. Nobita has several enemies, too, Suniyo and Jian. They are best friends but still bully nobita. They always put nobita in trouble and make him feel embarrassed in front of Shizuka. But Doraemon always comes to help him. By using his superpower and gadgets, he teaches a lesson to suniyo and Jian.

Also, Jian is a very bad singer. He always irritates people by singing songs. Doraemon loves nobita and Doraemon always helps nobita in his homework.  After all, they are cartoon characters and we need to see them for entertainment purposes only. Doraemon teaches lots of positive lessons like Nobita to have Doraemon, but we don’t. So we should not wait for Doraemon to come and help us. We should do it by ourselves. Another lesson which the show Doraemon teaches is that we should not bully someone. These are the reasons why I love Doraemon. I am sure that many younger generation kids love this show.

My Favourite Cartoon is Cinderella

Life is not always fair. Cinderella teaches to deal with that. This show is very popular among girls. They are mad about it. Even I like this show. It teaches us to deal with life problems. Cinderella teaches children they have choices. Cinderella is considered a beloved classic story. Cinderella is an orphan. She doesn’t have her real parents. She lives with her stepfamily ‘Cruel stepfamily’. She has a cruel stepmother, who is always being jealous of Cinderella. Cinderella has a cruel stepsister as her stepmother. They are selfish, jealous, and vain. They are lazy too. When Cinderella’s sisters see the dress made by Cinderella’s friend, they tear it to shreds. On the other side, Cinderella is kind to others.  She is kind to the creatures in the world.

Animal characters in the show also teach us life lessons. Bruno, Major, Jaq, Gus, birds, and Lucifer are the characters of the show Cinderella.

More than an entertaining show, Cinderella is a life teaching show. It adds value to the viewers’ minds. This show helps kids to understand life after growing. That is the reason behind the popularity of this show. It never fails to teach. It has a special place in people’s hearts.

My Favourite Cartoon is ChotaBheem

ChotaBheem is a story based in a village named Dolakpur.  Bheem is a 9-year-old boy who is very intelligent and brave. He always helps the villagers. He is the favorite of all the people in the village except some. Kaliya is a character who always gets jealous of Bheem. Where Bheem always helps people on the other side, Kaliya used to ruin things. He was jealous of the popularity of Bheem.

Chutki is the female character of the show. She is the daughter of the tuntun mausi. Tuntun mausi makes very tasty laddoos. Raju and Jaggus are also the characters of this show. Raju and Jaggu have a rivalry with kaliya and his friends.  Kaliya has his sidekicks, twin brothers, dholu, and bholu.  Kaliya wants to prove that he is better than Bheem. But he fails every time; Bheem is always kind to others. Bheem always helps others.

The story revolves around the rivalry between Bheem and kaliya. Most episodes revolve around the problems of villagers and how Bheem solves it. It is a very popular show in India. It is very famous among the children. It is considered as the largest children’s entertainment brand in India.

In the end, I want to add that the cartoon industry is very vast and popular. It has a large audience group. The products of these famous cartoon characters like pencil, bags, Tiffin box are popular among the children. Nowadays the animation is useful everywhere, not only children but the working corporate professional also uses this animation presentation idea. My favourite cartoons have helped me to be courageous and made me learn various good habits.

Introduction

Some are born great; some achieve greatness; some have greatness thrust upon them. As for Dimple Kapadia, my favorite actress, the later two parts of the sentence hold good. The director of movie Bobby, Raj Kapoor, drew magic out of her. The movie was popular beyond expectations and those who saw the movie not once, twice but dozens of times just to enjoy the role of Dimple Kapadia as Bobby are not in dozens, but in thousands. Through this movie, she brought the essential dignity to the female character, and sent a convincing message, as for the rights and responsibilities of women in the Indian Society. Mind you, she was doing this role 4 decades ago and the social conditions prevailing then were entirely different as compared to the current times.

She has been hailed as the sensuous star, apart from her superb acting talents. Her sexuality was not exhibitionism of the naked body parts. It was appreciated and acceptable as it had nobility about it. She was in teens when she did the role of Bobby, but showed extraordinary maturity in ‘her dialogues.’ As a debutant, it was an outstanding effort. She acted without any strain; the scene to scene transformation was effortless. She was the daughter of a Christian fisherman and fell in love with the only son of a rich industrialist. The initiative was from the boy’s side first. Bikini had yet to enter the Hindi Films, and the scene in which she steps out of a swimming pool in the most revealing style, is unforgettable. Some of the dialogues have found a permanent place in Hindi script-writing. ‘Mujhse Dosti Karoge?’(Will you make friendship with me?)-the style in which the dialogue was delivered was both a challenge and unintended rebuke to the boy, Rishi Kapoor, who was taken aback at her boldness.

She married Rajesh Khanna, another famous movie star of the time, but the marriage ended in divorce. Notwithstanding the temporary setback in her personal life, there was no stopping as for successful roles she did in many films. Some of the memorable roles are:

As the mother of two kids, she did her comeback film Sagar. She was remarkable again, the spectators won’t forget the scene in which her towel slips as she emerges from the waves and surf, and for a second one catches the glimpse of her bare breasts. Kamal Hasan was her hero in this movie. She was not the pony-tailed Bobby in this movie but her gorgeous auburn tresses were no less attractive. Then followed Mahesh Bhatt’s sensitive movie Kaash! She excelled in a non-glamorous role in Shanichari. She is a poor low-caste woman in this tale by Kalpana Lajmi. She had everything that made her life miserable in this movie. An alcoholic husband, a useless son, a prostitute for a daughter and a broken house in the Rajasthanai desert! She as ‘Rudali’ showed grit and great strength of character. Dil Chahta Hai, Leela, Pyar  Mein Twist, Zhakmi Aurat, Lekin are some of her other movies that brought her fame.

She is a great actress and a great human being. She established her place in the Bollywood with her sheer acting talents. Luck favors the brave and she had the element of luck with her, to be spotted by the Director like Raj Kapoor to chisel ‘Bobby’ out of the young girl, Dimple Kapadia. The rest is history.

Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Favourite Celebrity in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

Introduction.

My favourite celebrity is Taylor Swift, an iconic American singer and songwriter.

I love Swift’s music because it’s relatable and catchy. Her songs, like “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me,” are timeless.

Her Personality

Swift isn’t just a great artist, she’s a wonderful person too. She’s kind, generous, and stands up for what she believes in.

Overall, Taylor Swift is my favourite celebrity. Her music and personality make her a role model for many, including me.

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

Everyone has a favourite celebrity they admire, and mine is none other than the brilliant physicist, Stephen Hawking. He was a man of extraordinary intellect and resilience, who significantly contributed to our understanding of the universe.

Admirable Intellect

Hawking was a theoretical physicist and cosmologist, renowned for his work on black holes and relativity. His book, “A Brief History of Time,” broke down complex scientific theories into concepts that the average person could understand. This not only demonstrates his deep understanding of the universe but also his ability to communicate effectively, a trait I greatly admire.

Inspirational Resilience

In addition to his intellectual prowess, Hawking’s resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. Diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease at the age of 21, he was given just two years to live. However, he defied the odds and continued to work, despite his physical limitations.

Stephen Hawking’s legacy is immense. He not only made significant contributions to science but also inspired millions with his indomitable spirit. His life sends a powerful message: physical limitations cannot restrict the power of the mind.

Stephen Hawking’s intellect, resilience, and ability to inspire make him my favourite celebrity. He serves as a reminder that we can overcome obstacles and contribute to the world in meaningful ways, regardless of our circumstances. His life and work continue to inspire me in my academic pursuits and personal life.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

My favourite celebrity is none other than the renowned physicist, Dr. Stephen Hawking. Although he is no longer with us, his invaluable contributions to the field of theoretical physics and cosmology have made a lasting impact on our understanding of the universe. Hawking was not just a celebrity in the traditional sense, but an intellectual icon who bridged the gap between complex scientific theories and the general public.

Early Life and Achievements

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. Despite his early academic struggles, he went on to attend Oxford University, where he studied physics and later pursued his PhD at Cambridge University. His work on black holes and the origins of the universe has revolutionized the field of cosmology. His theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation, was a groundbreaking discovery that challenged the existing laws of physics.

Overcoming Adversity

Diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease at the age of 21, Hawking was given a mere two years to live. However, he defied all odds and continued his research, even as his physical capabilities diminished. His indomitable spirit in the face of adversity is as inspiring as his intellectual achievements. He once said, “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”

Bridging Science and Popular Culture

Hawking’s fame transcended the boundaries of the scientific community, reaching the general public through his best-selling book, “A Brief History of Time”. His knack for explaining complex scientific concepts in an engaging and accessible manner made science more approachable for the masses. He also made appearances in popular TV shows like “The Simpsons” and “The Big Bang Theory”, further enhancing his celebrity status.

Stephen Hawking passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on. His theories continue to shape our understanding of the universe, and his life story continues to inspire millions around the world. He was a testament to the power of the human spirit and the limitless potential of the human mind.

In conclusion, Stephen Hawking is my favourite celebrity not because of his fame or popularity, but because of his intellectual prowess, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his ability to make science accessible to everyone. His life and work serve as a reminder that limitations are only as constraining as we allow them to be. As Hawking said, “We are all different. There is no such thing as a standard or run-of-the-mill human being, but we share the same human spirit.”
