How to Embed HTML in PowerPoint

Embedding an HTML file in PowerPoint can enable directly opening the file during a PowerPoint presentation. While PowerPoint is not a web browser with limitations regarding such files, you can embed HTML in PowerPoint.

How to Embed HTML into PowerPoint

To add embed code in PowerPoint, you can simply add it to a textbox. You might also want to see which PowerPoint templates or Google Slides templates to use with PowerPoint to make your code prominently visible. However, to embed an HTML file, it needs to be added as an object. 

HTML files can be embedded as objects in PowerPoint via Insert -> Text -> Object .

From the dialog box, select a file and browse to select the HTML file. You can choose to display the file as an icon by checking the Display as Icon option. Check the Link option if you want the linked file to be updated with the latest version. This will help ensure that changes made to the HTML file are reflected when you open it.

How to Open Embedded HTML File in Normal Mode

The HTML file added to PowerPoint can be opened by clicking Normal mode.

How to Open Embedded HTML File in Slide Show Mode

Once the HTML object is added, you will require hyperlinking it to ensure it opens in Slide Show mode. Select the HTML object embedded in your slide and go to Insert Link via the Insert tab.

Browse to select the HTML file to hyperlink it to the embedded HTML object in your slide.

How to Embed HTML in Google Slides? [Complete Guide!]

HTML is a great way of including “more information” into your presentations which can open up a whole new world of possibilities to present an interactive presentations. Although Google has not introduced a feature to embed HTML in Google Slides yet, we can use “insert” option to embed Objects like URLs, images, videos etc. easily.

If you want to display some information outside your presentation and also want to keep the flow at the same time, there are two ways to add links of web pages in Google Slides.

Either you select the text and choose “Link” from the “Right-click” menu or select “Link” from the dropdown menu of “Insert” tab. It will open a dialog box where you can paste the link of your website, padlet, Instagram post etc. and click “apply” to embed the link into the slide.

In this article, we will also teach you how to embed a Google Slide on a website. So, let’s start out this complete guide:

1. How to Embed HTML in Google Slides?

Google Slides does not have any feature to embed HTML in a presentation slide. Unfortunately, you cannot embed HTML in a Google Slides presentation.

2. How to Embed a Website in Google Slides?

In Google Slides, you cannot embed a website into a slide. However, you can add the link of a website to the text in a slide. All you have to do is follow 2 easy steps.

Step-1: Click on the “Link” option

The first step is to select the text where you want to link the website. Then “Right Click” on the text. In the right-click menu, click on the “Link” option. Alternatively, you can press the “Ctrl+K” keys on your keyboard.

Step-2: Click on the “Apply” option

In the pop-up dialog under the selected text, click on the “Search or paste a link” box. You can now paste the website link that you want to embed. Then click on the “Apply” option to hyperlink the text.

3. How to Embed iframes in Google Slides?

You cannot embed iframes in Google Slides. Since there is no feature for HTML codes, the application cannot embed iframes. However, you can copy the iframe code for the Google Slides presentation to embed it into websites. Refer to section 6 for detailed steps on obtaining the iframe code for a Google Slides presentation.

4. How to Embed Padlet in Google Slides?

To embed your Padlet wall in Google Slides, you have to first copy the link from Padlet. Since Google Slides does not have any feature that allows you to embed a code, you have to add Padlet as a link. To do so, follow the 3 quick steps.

Step-1: Click on the “Insert” tab

The first step is to select the text or image where you want to link the Padlet wall. Then click on the “Insert” tab in the menu bar located at the top of the screen.

Step-2: Click on the “Link” option

In the dropdown menu under the “Insert” tab, click on the “Link” option. You can alternatively press the “Ctrl+K” keys on your keyboard.

Step-3: Paste the Padlet link

In the pop-up dialog box, you can now paste the Padlet link. Finally, all you have to do is click on the “Apply” button to add the Padlet link to the selected text or image.

5. How to Embed Instagram Post in Google Slides?

In Google Slides, you cannot embed an Instagram post using the embed link available on Instagram. However, you can insert the picture and link it to the Instagram post. All you have to do is follow the 5 simple steps.

Step-1: Click on the “Insert” menu

The first step is to insert the Instagram image into the presentation slide. To do so, you have to click on the “Insert” menu in the menu bar located at the top of the screen.

Step-2: Click on the “Image” option

In the “Insert” dropdown menu, click on the “Image” option. In the pop-up menu by the “Image” option in the “Insert” menu, click on the “Drive” or “Photos” option.

Since you cannot insert the image directly using the Instagram link, you must first upload the Instagram picture to Google Drive or Google Photos.

Step-3: Click on the “Insert” option

In the “Google Drive” sidebar on the right side of the screen, click on the Instagram image. Then click on the “Insert” option at the bottom of the sidebar to insert the image into the slide.

Step-4: Click on the “Insert link” option

The next step is to click on the Instagram picture inserted into the slide to select it. Then click on the “Insert link” option in the toolbar located under the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Alternatively, you can press the “Ctrl+K” keys on your keyboard.

Step-5: Paste the Instagram link

In the pop-up dialog under the picture, you can now paste the link to the Instagram post in the “Search or paste a link” box. Then all you have to do is click on the “Apply” button next to the box to embed the Instagram post to the picture in the presentation.

Google Slides offers the “Publish to the web” feature that gives you the embed code that you can copy and paste to a website to embed the presentation. To embed the Google Slides presentation to a website, follow the 5 quick steps.

Sep-1: Click on the “File” menu

In the menu bar located at the top of the screen, click on the “File” menu. It is the first tab in the menu bar.

Step-2: Click on the “Publish to the web” option

The next step is to scroll down in the dropdown menu under the “File” tab. Click on the “Publish to the web” option in the “File” menu. This will open the “Publish to the web” dialog box.

Step-3: Click on the “Embed” option

In the “Publish to the web” dialog box, click on the “Embed” option. Then you can customize autoplay options for the embedded presentation.

Step-4: Click on the “Publish” button

The next step is to click on the “Publish” button at the bottom of the “Publish to the web” dialog box. This will prompt a pop-up dialog box. Click on the “OK” button in the pop-up dialog.

Step-5: Copy the embed link

When you want to share a presentation or a picture slide show with your friends, family, or colleagues, save it to OneDrive, then you can embed it in a web page or blog.

The embed code you need must be gotten from PowerPoint for the web . It isn't available from the PC or Mac versions of PowerPoint.

Save your presentation to OneDrive.com. (Storing the presentation to a public folder online is what allows you to embed it on a web page.)

With the HTML tag that you copied from the OneDrive page as the most recent item in your Clipboard, press Ctrl+V to paste the tag on the wiki page. This is so that you can easily copy a portion of the tag into the Web Part. You’ll delete the tag from the wiki page before you’re done.

Copy the portion of the tag between quotation marks that begins with http . Don’t include the quotation marks.

On the Editing Tools tab click Insert , and then click Web Part.

In the list of categories, click Media and Content .

In the list of Web Parts , click Page Viewer , and then click Add .

To paste the address you copied in step 3, click open the tool pane , and then in the Link box, press ⌘+V.

Click Apply to preview the page.

Make adjustments to the Web Part as desired. For example, in the Page Viewer editor, expand Appearance and specify height of 332 pixels and width of 407 pixels to fit the presentation in the frame with no scroll bars.

When you are finished, click OK in the Page Viewer editor, and delete the iframe tag from the wiki page.

How to Embed a Web Page in a PowerPoint Presentation

Imagine you’re in the middle of your webinar or your presentation at a live event. You’ve intrigued your audience with some details, have their undivided attention, your story is about to reach its climax – a demo of your product, a proof of your concept, or any other valuable knowledge – and you click on the link to go to the website and… here comes an awkward moment: you switch off show mode, change from the Microsoft PowerPoint window to Chrome, then turn on slideshow mode again. When you look back at the audience, they’ve already lost interest.

To avoid such situations, you might want to embed a web page in your presentation. The iframe tag will help you display an HTML document in your slides.

What Is an iframe?

An iframe (inline frame) is an HTML element that loads another HTML page within the document. In other words, it puts another web page within the parent page. It is commonly used for embedded videos, advertisements, and interactive content, and can be a great enhancement for your presentation. 

Four Simple Steps to Insert a Web Page

Questions about iframe and HTML can intimidate some people, but, frankly, there’s nothing to worry about. You don’t need to make any operations with an embed code or do any other tech things.

With the right PowerPoint add-in, you’ll manage to add an object in a couple of minutes. You’re just required to take 4 easy steps. Let us guide you through them.

• Copy the URL (web address) of the web page you want to insert. If you don’t need the entire page, you can copy the URL of a specific element of the page.
• Download the free trial of Spring Converter Pro . With this tool, you’ll be able to embed not only live navigable web pages, but also media: audio, YouTube videos, and a lot of other content objects from external resources – and preserve the original quality.
• Open PowerPoint. Find the iSpring Converter Pro 11  tab and click on it. Then choose the Web Object button on the toolbar.

Paste the copied URL in the open window. Now, check to see if the address that you entered is correct by clicking on the Preview button.

By the way, you can show web pages even when an internet connection is not available. To do this, you need to download the desired web object to your computer, and then add the file by choosing Local path instead of Web address .

Note: if you want to put additional web pages on your PowerPoint slide, or if you want to combine the webpage with other content objects, you should choose the Custom size option.

• Now that you’ve embedded web objects in your slides, let’s play them back. In order to do this, you’ll need to convert your presentation to HTML5. iSpring Converter Pro will do this work for you.

Why Not a Screenshot?

We’ve already described an awkward real-life situation that you might find yourself in when using links in your presentation, but what about screenshots of websites? Sure, you can just make one and insert it into your presentation as an image with text and other elements displayed on the webpage. But this “technology” has some limitations.

• S creenshots are static. If your website has animations that make the user experience cool and engaging, you’re going to lose all these in your presentation.
• Screenshots are outdated. Depending on the website’s specifics, once you’ve made a screenshot, it may already be out of date and provide irrelevant information. Take the stock market as an example. Even a few minutes can make a huge difference. And what if you show your presentation to the public a few days, weeks, or even months after you’ve created it? Exactly.
• Images are not interactive. If you need to show your audience how they can interact with your website, such as how and where they can find the data they’re interested in, a screenshot will be of no use.

Presentations are one of the best ways to serve information to an audience. The format is short and sharp, made up of small, digestible chunks, which makes any topic under discussion engaging and easier to understand. A presentation can contain all kinds of data, represented by many different elements, such as tables, charts, diagrams, illustrations, images, videos, sounds, maps, lists, etc, all of which lends great flexibility to this medium of expression.

Particularly on the web, presentations come in handy on many occasions, and there are loads of tools at your disposal to create some nifty ones. Today, I’ll introduce you to WebSlides — a small and compact library with a nice set of ready-to-use components, which you can leverage to build well-crafted and attractive web presentations:

WebSlides “is about telling the story, and sharing it in a beautiful way.”

In fact, one of WebSlides’ main benefits is that you can share your story beautifully and in a variety of different ways. With one and the same architecture — 40+ components with semantic classes, and clean and scalable code — you can create portfolios, landings, longforms, interviews, etc.

Besides, you can also extend WebSlides’ functionality by combining it with third-party services and tools such as Unsplash , Animate.css , Animate On Scroll , and so on.

WebSlides is easy to learn and fun to use. Let’s see it in action now.

To get started, first download WebSlides . Then, in the root folder, create a new folder and call it presentation . Inside the newly created presentation folder, create a new file and call it index.html . Now, enter the following code, which contains the needed references to the WebSlides’ files (make sure the filepaths correspond to the folder structure in your setup):

In this section you’re going to create a short, but complete presentation, which explains why SVG is the future of web graphics. Note: If you are interested in SVG, please check my articles: SVG 101: What is SVG? and How to Optimize and Export SVGs in Adobe Illustrator .

You’ll be working step by step on each slide. Let’s get started with the first one.

The first slide is pretty simple. It contains only one sentence:

Each parent <section> inside <article id="webslides"> creates an individual slide. Here, you’ve used two classes from WebSlides’ arsenal, i.e., bg-gradient-r and aligncenter , to apply a radial gradient background and to align the slide content to the center respectively.

The second slide explains what SVG is:

The code above uses the content-left and content-right classes to separate the content into two columns. Also, in order to make the above classes work, you need to wrap all content by using the wrap class. On the left side, the code uses text-subtitle to make the text all caps, and text-intro to increase the font size. The right side consists of an illustrative image.

The next slide uses the grid component to create two columns:

The snippet above shows how to use the grid and column classes to create a grid with two columns. In the first column the style attribute aligns the text to the left (Note how the aligncenter class on the <section> element cascades through to its .column child element, which causes all text inside the slide to be center aligned). In the second column, the browser class makes the illustrative image look like a screenshot.

In the fourth slide, use the grid component again to split the content into two columns:

In this slide, place half of the content to the left and the other half to the right using the content-left and content-right classes respectively:

In this slide, use the background class to embed an image as a background with the Unsplash service . Put the headline on light, transparent background by using the bg-trans-light class. The text’s color appears white, because the slide uses a black background with the bg-black class, therefore the default color is inversed, i.e., white on black rather than black on white. Also, for the text to be visible in front of the image, wrap it with <div class="wrap"> :

In this slide, put the explanation text on the left and the illustrative image on the right at 40% of its default size (with the alignright and size-40 classes on the <img> element). For this and the next three slides, use slideInRight , which is one of WebSlides’ built-in CSS animations:

Here, divide the content into left and right again. In the second <p> tag, use the inline style attribute to adjust the font-size and line-height properties. Doing so will override the text-intro class styles that get applied to the element by default. On the right side, use <div class="wrap size-80"> to create a container for the SVG code example:

Here, leverage some of the classes you’ve already used to illustrate browser support for SVG:

In this slide, show some of the use cases for SVG in the form of an image gallery. To this end, use an unordered list with the flexblock and gallery classes. Each item in the gallery is marked up with a li tag:

This section shows a typical SVG workflow, so you need to use the flexblock and steps classes, which show the content as a sequence of steps. Again, each step is placed inside a li tag:

For each step after the first one, you need to add the process-step-# class. This adds a triangle pointing to the next step.

In the last slide, use another one of WebSlides’ built-in CSS animations, i.e., zoomIn :

How To Build A Captivating Presentation Using HTML, CSS, & JavaScript

Building beautiful presentations is hard. Often you're stuck with Keynote or PowerPoint, and the templates are extremely limited and generic. Well not anymore.

Today, we're going to learn how to create a stunning and animated presentation using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

If you're a beginner to web development, don't fret! This tutorial will be easy enough to keep up with. So let's slide right into it!

We're going to be using an awesome framework called Reveal.js . It provides robust functionality for creating interesting and customizable presentations.

• Head over to the Reveal.js repository and clone the project (you can also fork this to your GitHub namespace).

• Change directories into your newly cloned folder and run npm install to download the package dependencies. Then run npm start to run the project.

The index.html file holds all of the markup for the slides. This is one of the downsides of using Reveal.js; all of the content will be placed inside this HTML file.

Built-In Themes

Reveal includes 11 built-in themes for you to choose from:

Changing The Theme

• Open index.html
• Change the CSS import to reflect the theme you want to use

The theme files are:

• solarized.css

Custom Themes

It's quite easy to create a custom theme. Today, I'll be using my custom theme from a presentation I gave called "How To Build Kick-Ass Website: An Introduction To Front-end Development."

Here is what my custom slides look like:

Creating A Custom Theme

• Open css/theme/src inside your IDE. This holds all of the Sass files ( .scss ) for each theme. These files will be transpiled to CSS using Grunt (a JavaScript task runner). If you prefer to write CSS, go ahead and just create the CSS file inside css/theme.
• Create a new  .scss file. I will call mine custom.scss . You may have to stop your localhost and run npm run build to transpile your Sass code to CSS.
• Inside the index.html file, change the CSS theme import in the <head> tag to use the name of the newly created stylesheet. The extension will be  .css , not  .scss .
• Next, I created variables for all of the different styles I wanted to use. You can find custom fonts on Google Fonts. Once the font is downloaded, be sure to add the font URL's into the index.html file.

Here are the variables I chose to use:

• Title Font: Viga
• Content Font: Open Sans
• Code Font: Courier New
• Cursive Font: Great Vibes
• Yellow Color: #F9DC24
• Add a  .reveal class to the custom Sass file. This will wrap all of the styles to ensure our custom theme overrides any defaults. Then, add your custom styling!

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I'll admit that I used quite a bit of  !important overrides in my CSS. This is horrible practice and I don't recommend it. The reveal.css file has extremely specific CSS styles, so I should have, if I had more time, gone back and ensured my class names were more specific so I could remove the  !importants .

Mixins & Settings

Reveal.js also comes with mixins and settings you can leverage in your custom theme.

To use the mixins and settings, just import the files into your custom theme:

Mixins You can use the vertical-gradient, horizontal-gradient, or radial-gradient mixins to create a neat visual effect.

All you have to do is pass in the required parameters (color value) and voila, you've got a gradient!

Settings In the settings file, you'll find useful variables like heading sizes, default fonts and colors, and more!

The structure for adding new content is:

.reveal > .slides > section

The <section> element represents one slide. Add as many sections as you need for your content.

Vertical Slides

To create vertical slides, simply nest sections.

Transitions

There are several different slide transitions for you to choose from:

To use them, add a data-transition="{name}" to the <section> which contains your slide data.

Fragments are great for highlighting specific pieces of information on your slide. Here is an example.

To use fragments, add a class="fragment {type-of-fragment}" to your element.

The types of fragments can be:

• fade-in-then-out
• fade-in-then-semi-out
• highlight-current-blue
• highlight-red
• highlight-green
• highlight-blue

You can additionally add indices to your elements to indicate in which order they should be highlighted or displayed. You can denote this using the data-fragment-index={index} attribute.

There are way more features to reveal.js which you can leverage to build a beautiful presentation, but these are the main things which got me started.

I really love reveal.js. I haven't spoken in a while so I haven't used it. I've always used their themes and never thought about making my own. This is probably super useful for company presentations, too. I'm SO over google slides. Trying to format code in those is a nightmare LOL

The best thing in this - and now I'm not being ironic - is that while you work on a not so much technical task - creating a presentation - you still have to code. And the result is nice.

On the other hand, I know what my presentation skills teachers would say. Well, because they said it... :) If you really want to deliver a captivating presentation, don't use slides at all. Use the time to prepare what you want to say.

I'm not that good - yet, but taking their advice, if must I use few slides, with little information on them and with minimal graphical distractions. My goal is to impress them by what I say, not is what behind my head.

I'm going to a new training soon, where the first day we have to deliver a presentation supported by slides at a big auditorium and the next day we have to go back and forget about the slides and just get on stage and speak. I can't wait for it.

Yup, RevealJS is awesome !

Previously I either used PPT or Google Slides. One is a paid license and the other requires an internet connection.

The cool thing about it is that since it's just HTML files behind the scenes, the only software you need to view it with is a web browser. Has amazing syntax-highlighting support via PrismJS. And as a web developer, it makes it simple to integrate other npm packages if need be...

How to embed an HTML file into a PowerPoint presentation?

Is there anyway to embed an HTML file that is stored locally into a PowerPoint presentation?

I know I can paste the link in the presentation and then click the link to open it in the browser but I'm wondering if it is possible to actually render the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in the presentation itself?

To be clear I'm looking for a way to do this with a local HTML file without any 3rd party software or add-ins b/c strict IT regulations on my offices computers.

You can't with PowerPoint by itself but there are add-ins such as LiveWeb: http://skp.mvps.org/liveweb.htm

LiveWeb is just one example and their website is pretty self explanitory how to use it.

In order to install an Add-In:

• Click the Office button at the top left of PowerPoint, click PowerPoint Options, and then Add-Ins
• In the Manager list, click Powerpoint Add-ins, then Go.
• In the Add-Ins dialog, click Add New
• In the Add New PowerPoint Add-In box browse for the one you wish to add (in this case wherever you saved LiveWeb to) and click OK
• Click Enable Macros and then Close.

• 2 I saw this add-in somewhere as a solution to this similar problem on Quora or something. And I'm sure it's great but I'm working in an office where our computers are super-locked-down by IT so we can't go installing anything. I'm looking for a way to do this with a local HTML file without any 3rd party software. I appreciate the effort though and will up-vote for that. –  James Draper Jun 22, 2017 at 19:27

In this guide, I'll show you how to make your presentation more interactive and engaging for your audience on the web. I'll explain how to upload your presentation slideshow directly to your blog, so your readers can enjoy all the functions of a PowerPoint presentation directly on your website or blog page.

To help you understand better, I'll show you an example of a presentation that has already been uploaded to this blog. With the help of PowerPoint for the Web, you can make your presentations more accessible and engaging for your audience. So, let me guide you through the process of seamlessly integrating your PowerPoint presentation into your website or blog.

This presentation is part of our Law PowerPoint Template .  You can use this template or any other template from the PresenterMedia  PowerPoint Templates library. 

This template can be accessed and download at no cost by simply signing up for the  PresenterMedia free basic plan .

The only version of PowerPoint that allows users to create embed code is PowerPoint for the Web .

Historically, consumers were able to save a presentation as a video and embed it onto a website. But it wasn't the same as allowing readers to click through the slides, and download if needed. Microsoft heard from their clients and added the ability to embed the web application into the latest iteration of PowerPoint (for Web). With that said, let's check out this feature from Microsoft!

Let's get started Embedding!

Now that you've seen what a PowerPoint looks like once embedded, let's get into the process of completing the task at hand.

Begin by opening the PowerPoint 365 Web Application (link here !)   Note* You may need to sign into your Microsoft Office account before you start.

After the site is open, select the presentation you'd like to embed into your website if already uploaded (or start from scratch).

If you haven't uploaded your presentation to PowerPoint for the web, choose the upload option.

Okay, once you've upload or selected your PowerPoint file it will load into the PowerPoint web application.

Next, click "File" from the upper left corner of PowerPoint and select "Share" from the options on the left side.

Then, select "Embed" from the two option on the right.

The default embed code in my PowerPoint is 476 x 288.  As a rule, 610 x 367 will fit on most websites comfortably, but if you want your viewer to have a full-screen experience, then 1186 x 691 dimensions would be preferable.  However, this option is customizable, so you can choose any size you desire.

Copy the Embed Code and paste it into the body of your website or blog.

Last, but not least, be sure to save the code in your site or blog, and voila! You've successfully embedded a PowerPoint presentation into your website.

Importing HTML objects into PowerPoint

Hello, 

I have created an HTML element that displays a rotateable rendering of a product. The file type is an HTML and references a folder of images. I am trying to see if there is some way to integrate this into Powerpoint as a standalone element. My other solution would be to create a video file and input that. But It would be very useful to have this HTML element in the presentation. 

On another note, does anyone know the best way to import a 3d model from Solidworks into powerpoint? OBJ and FBS files failed for me. Is there a specific file size cap?

Thank you for replying to my post. The instructions you gave were what I have been doing on my end. I did not know about the link checkbox that is good info. Unfortunately with both the "link" and "show as icon" checkboxes unchecked, all that displays in my presentation is an icon for Google Chrome and the text to the link. no matter which way I import the object I get either the icon or nothing.

• Again, go to “File” and select “Share.”
• Click on” Embed” from the “drop-down menu.” Wait a few seconds for a “new menu” to show up, and hit “Generate.” Now, your presentation will be previewed in front of you.
• You can change the dimensions of your presentation according to your audience.
• Next, from the “Embed Code textbox,” copy the code.
• Paste the code into the body of your website.
• Save your site. And now you have successfully embedded a PowerPoint presentation into a website.

Method 2: Using OneDrive

To embed PowerPoint presentations in HTML using OneDrive:

• Open your Presentation. Remove any notes or personal details if you have any.
• Next, upload your “PPT” to your personal OneDrive account.
• On your OneDrive, go to recent documents and select your presentation.
• Click on the “Embed button” appearing at the top of the page.
• Copy the “HTML code” that appears in front of your screen.
• Paste the copied code on your website and save it. Your PowerPoint presentation will now be embedded in your website.

However, the imbibing option is not entirely functional because you won’t be able to update or change the fonts. There are no extra features because it is only available for viewing on the web. • Click Add link -> Save.
• In the drop-down menu, select Embedding settings .
• If needed, adjust the settings such as width and height.
• Copy the embedding code and insert it to your HTML page.

Alternatively, you are able to do the same actions right from the opened presentation editor via the Collaboration tab.

2. How to embed PowerPoint into HTML on your WordPress or Drupal site

If you want to curate others' content from social media or just make your own visual social media content work harder for your overall content strategy, you need to know how to embed HTML code onto your blog or website.

But wait a second ... before we get into the nitty-gritty of this tip, what the heck does "embed" mean? And what is HTML? If you don't know how to code at all, no worries — embedding external content is extremely easy. Let's take a second to break down the basics.

What does embed mean?

Embed means to integrate external content into another website or page. You embed something when you place a block of code — called an embed code — into the HTML editor of another website. When you hit ‘Save’ or ‘Publish,’ the media then renders on the published page.

Embedded content is referenced with HTML . HTML is one of the most basic languages used on the web to design and lay out web pages.

You often see this code when you're in the "back end" of your blog post. There’s where you’ll add your embed code.

What is an embed code?

An embed code is a block of HTML that is placed in another page and renders a visual element — a video, social media post, form, or page — from another website or source. You can embed YouTube videos, Twitter posts, GIFs, and other multimedia objects on another website.

Most social and multimedia websites have an option to generate an embed code right in each individual post. Here’s an example of an embed code for a HubSpot YouTube video:

How to Add HTML Embed Code to Your Site

• Go to the social post or webpage you’d like to embed.
• Generate the embed code using the post’s options.
• If applicable, customize the embed post, such as the height and width of the element.
• Highlight the embed code, then copy it to your clipboard.
• In your content management system, open up your HTML viewer.
• Paste the HTML snippet you just copied into your HTML viewer window. Then click 'OK' or 'Save.'
• Finished! You have now embedded content onto your website or blog.

Before embedding external content, you must first generate an embed code for the post or page you want to embed on your website.

We’ll go over how you can do that on most of the major social and content networks.

Embed a Facebook Post

To embed a Facebook post, do the following:

• Navigate to Facebook on your desktop browser and go to the post that you’d like to embed.
• Click on the three dots on the upper right-hand corner of the post.
• On the drop-down menu, click Embed .

• A pop-up will appear, where you have the option to include the full post and access advanced settings. For beginners, we recommend leaving the options as they are and simply clicking Copy Code .

• Finished! You’ve got your embed code.

Embed an Instagram Post

Want to embed an Instagram post? The process is similar to Facebook’s. Note that you can only embed posts from the desktop version and not the mobile app.

• Click the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the post.
• A popup will come up with several options. Click Embed , the second-to-last option.

• A pop-up will come up with your embed code. You have the option of including or excluding the caption.
• After you’ve finished customizing your options, click Copy Embed Code .

• Complete! You’ve got your Instagram embed code.

Embed a YouTube Video

YouTube videos can take your blog posts to the next level, and the best part is that you can embed its wealth of content on your blog posts for free.

To do so, take the following steps:

• Navigate to the video that you’d like to embed on your website.
• Under the video, next to where the likes are located, click Share .

• A pop-up will come up with several options, including sharing the post to other social networks. Click Embed .

• YouTube will create an embed code, which you can customize. You can start the video at a certain point or hide the player controls.
• After choosing your options, click Copy on the lower right-hand corner of the pop-up.

• Complete! Your YouTube video is ready to get embedded.

Embed a Tweet

If you embed a Tweet on your website pages or blog, you can generate engagement for your Twitter profile without relying on your Twitter followers. Website visitors can engage with your Twitter content, too.

To embed a Twitter post, do the following:

• On a desktop browser, navigate to the post that you’d like to embed.
• A drop-down menu will appear. Click Embed Tweet .

• Twitter will take you to an external page on publish.twitter.com , where you can then further customize the look of the Tweet before embedding it on your site. For instance, you can set it to dark mode and change the display language of the Tweet.

• Once you’ve customized it, click Update.
• Click Copy Code.
• Finished! The Tweet is ready to embed on your site.

There’s another way to generate an embed code for Twitter. Go to publish.twitter.com and insert the URL of the post that you’d like to embed. Twitter will then generate the embed code, and you can customize it using the same process as the last method.

Embed a Pinterest Post

Embedding a Pinterest post can lead website users back to your Pinterest profile and help you grow your Pinterest following. To get started, do the following:

• Navigate to the Pinterest post you’d like to embed.
• Click on the three dots right next to the image (or under the image, if you’re using the mobile website).
• On the drop-down menu, click Get Pin embed code .

• A pop-up will appear with the embed code. You have the option of creating a small, medium, large, or extra-large embedded pin.

• Once you customize the size, highlight the code and click Command + C or CTRL + C .
• Finished! Your Pin is ready to get embedded.

Embed a SlideShare Presentation

While SlideShare presentations are not as popular these days, they can still be a handy multimedia tool for spicing up blog posts and pages. Here’s how to embed a SlideShare presentation:

• Go to the SlideShare presentation you’d like to embed.
• Click Share under the presentation.
• In the same window where the presentation appears, you’ll see the option to share it via social channels. The embed code will be underneath that.

• Choose the size of the embed window and which slide you’d like the presentation to start on.
• Highlight the embed code and click Command + C or CTRL + C .
• Ready! You can now embed the SlideShare presentation in a web page or post.

Embed an External Webpage

Don’t want to embed a social post but rather a web page? You can embed an external web page using the iframe HTML tag .

All embed codes, including the ones for social sites, use iframe tags. This is what they look like:

You can use these same tags to embed an external webpage. Here’s how:

• Navigate to the webpage you’d like to embed into your site.
• Open up the notepad app on your computer. Paste the following code into it:
• Return to the webpage and copy the URL.
• Paste the entire URL where it says url in your iframe code. Don’t forget to include https:// at the beginning of your URL and to place the link inside the quote marks. Here’s what your code should look like:
• Change the width and height of the frame if desired.
• Copy the entire line of code. After, the webpage is ready to get embedded on your website.

2. Access your content management system and paste the embed code in your HTML viewer.

Although every CMS is different, you can probably find the HTML viewer with similar steps. We’ll go over how you can do it in Content Hub and WordPress .

Content Hub

In Content Hub, you actually don’t need to add your embed content using the HTML editor (although you have the option to). Here’s how:

• In your HubSpot dashboard, navigate to Marketing > Website > Blog . If you’re planning to add the code to a website page, navigate to Marketing > Website > Website Pages.

• Find the post or page that you’d like to add the embed code to. Hover over it, then click Edit .

• Click into the module where you’d like to add the embed code. An options bar will appear near the top of the screen. In the right-hand side, click Insert .
• Choose Embed from the drop-down menu.

• A pop-up will appear. Paste the iframe code into the text bar.

• Click Insert .
• Finished! You can edit the width and height of the embed content to customize it further.

To access the HTML editor, complete steps 1-3 above. On the top options bar, click Advanced > Source Code . You can then paste your embed code manually. Note that the end result is the same.

To paste an embed code into your WordPress website, use the following steps:

• Access your admin area and go to either Pages or Posts .
• Click the title of the post that you want to add the embed code to. This action will take you to the post editor.
• Click the Text tab on the upper right-hand corner of the text editor.

• Paste your embed code where you want the module to appear.

3. Finished! You have embedded content onto your website or blog.

Once you reload the page, your embedded social post will appear.

Add Embedded Content to Increase User Engagement

By embedding external content on your pages and posts, you can increase engagement on your website and get your site visitors to interact with the content you post on social media. The best part is that it’s easy to do — simply generate the embed code, paste it into your HTML editor, and watch your user engagement grow.

Luckily, there’s a way around this – you can insert a PDF directly into your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with Adobe’s useful tools.

There are many ways you can insert a PDF into a PowerPoint to enhance your presentation and showcase some eye-catching data:

First and foremost, before you embed a PDF into a PowerPoint, your document needs to be ready to present. This is because you can’t go back and edit your PDF within PowerPoint, so be sure to finalise and proofread your document before you add it to your deck.

Adobe Acrobat online services offer you a range of professional PDF editing tools to re-arrange , sign and share your files securely . Access your PDFs from anywhere on any device on your Adobe cloud.

Inserting a PDF into PowerPoint as an Object.

One way to import a PDF to PowerPoint is by inserting it as an object. This creates a shortcut within the presentation, quickly and seamlessly opening the file with your PDF reader so you don’t have to find it manually while you present.

Here’s how to do it:

• Open your presentation deck in Microsoft PowerPoint.
• Navigate to the slide you wish to insert your PDF into.
• From the top toolbar, click the Insert tab.

• Find the Text section and select Object. You can hover your mouse over each icon to help you find it.

• From the Object window, click Create from File.
• Click Browse to find your PDF.
• Select OK to add your PDF to the slide as an object. It will look like an image, which you can arrange how you like.

How to Open a PDF as an Object from a Slide Show.

So, your PDF is looking great in your presentation, but how does it work during the slide show? To open the document as a high-quality file with your PDF reader, you’ll need to assign an action to it.

• Select Insert from the top toolbar.
• Click the PDF image so it becomes highlighted.

• In the Links section of the Insert toolbar, click Action.

• From the Actions Settings box, choose whether you want to open it with a Mouse Click or with Mouse Over (which will open the PDF by hovering your mouse over the image).
• Select Object action, and make sure Open is selected.

• Click OK to accept your changes.

Now, when you click your PDF image in Slide Show mode, it will automatically open your document with your PDF reader.

Add a PDF to PowerPoint as an Image.

If you don’t need to view your document in a PDF reader during your presentation, you can also insert a PDF into PowerPoint as an image.

To do this, simply complete the steps to insert the PDF as an object, but don’t assign an action to it.

Alternatively, you can also insert a single page of your PDF as a screenshot image. Just follow these instructions for similar results:

• Open the PDF file in your PDF reader and select the page you wish to insert to PowerPoint.
• Launch PowerPoint and find the slide that you’d like to insert the PDF image into.
• Select Insert > Screenshot . This tool lets you take a screenshot of any open window on your computer.

• Select the window with your PDF reader. PowerPoint will automatically insert a screenshot of that window into the slide.
• Use the Picture Format tab to crop and resize the image to your liking.

Insert PDF into PowerPoint as a PPT File.

Finally, if you’d prefer to integrate your PDF document into your PowerPoint in the form of presentation slides, there is another way to achieve this. You can embed a PDF into PowerPoint by converting it into a PPT (PowerPoint) file.

You can quickly convert any PDF file to PPT using Acrobat online:

• Head to Adobe Acrobat online services and select Convert PDF to PowerPoint .

• Drag and drop your PDF file into the drop zone or click Select a file to find your PDF.
• Download your new PowerPoint file.

To embed the slides into an existing PowerPoint presentation, open your PowerPoint deck and select Home > New Slide > Reuse Slides. You can locate your new PDF to PPT file by selecting Browse > Choose Content.

As a side note, it’s also possible to convert your PPT to PDF quickly and easily using Adobe’s online tool. This makes it easier to share with others after the presentation.

If you have multiple PDFs to display in your PowerPoint presentation, there’s a simple solution. Just repeat the process above with each PDF file to achieve your desired results.

You can also assign an action to multiple objects in a single presentation, so you can open each one in your PDF reader while you present your deck.

Alternatively, you can insert your PDF files as images, or convert them to PPT files, and arrange them in your presentation however you like.

Sheboygan South High students to honor Hmong veterans, culture with community presentation

Hmong student organization leaders hope people who attend will learn about hmong veterans' contributions to us military and more about the culture..

SHEBOYGAN — The Hmong Student Organization at South High will host its first event to honor Hmong veterans and celebrate Hmong culture and history next week.  

The Hmong Veterans Day Presentation will be held on Hmong-Lao Veterans Day May 14, which Gov. Tony Evers designated in 2021 as a way to honor and recognize the Hmong veterans who contributed to the U.S. military efforts in the Secret War. The CIA recruited Hmong people in neighboring Laos to fight Communist forces during the Vietnam War.  

The presentation will not only honor Hmong veterans but explore other effects of the Secret War, like the impact on Hmong civilians who were displaced and separated from their families as they fled. Some estimates put the number of Hmong people who came to the U.S. from this conflict at the tens to hundreds of thousands.  

This will be the larger context of a play HSO wrote for the presentation, following two families as they flee to the U.S. and adjust to living in a new place.  

Though the play is fictional, HSO co-president and South senior Kelsie Vang said this is a story experienced by many Hmong families.  

Vang said Hmong families may wonder “what could’ve been" if they stayed with their families in Laos. “But they were separated and moved to America. It's such a true story," she said.

Autumn Lee, HSO co-president and South senior, said the play could give the older Hmong generation more visibility, too, by sharing a story that could resemble their own.  

Amanda Xiong, HSO public relations chairperson and South senior, said she wants students at South High to understand what Hmong people experienced during the Secret War.  

“That's not hugely covered in the social studies class,” Xiong said. “From this, I just want them to learn about Hmong culture and how Hmong people came to America, because even though there's a huge Hmong student (population) here, a lot of people still don't really know how they came to the United States and what they contributed to the war.” 

Sheboygan County has the fourth largest population of Hmong people in the state. Hmong people also account for more than 70% of the Asian American population in Sheboygan.  

“I really hope that the South High community and the community as a whole learns about Hmong culture because it is a fascinating culture,” HSO adviser and South special education teacher Randall McAdoo said. “I hope that we are able to continue this tradition.”

The presentation will feature a Hmong veteran guest speaker, play about the Secret War and more.

Images of Hmong people will be displayed as attendees arrive to the event, some depicting stages of them fleeing to the U.S.

The hour-long presentation will open with an introduction from McAdoo. The presentation guest speaker, Hmong Veteran Shua Yang, who was a First Sargeant in the U.S. Army’s military intelligence division, will follow.

After that, there will be an interactive Hmong language learning portion, a play called “Meet Me Under the Mango Tree” and a dance from the HSO Dance Team.

Apple Events 2024: Apple’s event plans

Apple doesn’t participate in big industry-wide events such as CES or E3. The most valuable company in the world holds its own events, thank you very much. Several times a year, Apple invites the press and industry professionals to Apple Park to hear all about its latest products and services. Apple calls these ‘events,’ and streams them live online to millions of watchers.

In 2023 there were three such events: WWDC in June, the Wonderlust iPhone event in September and Apple’s second fall event on October 30 (or October 31 if you weren’t in the U.S.). Similarly, in 2022 Apple held three events: a spring event on March 8, WWDC on June 6, and the iPhone 14 launch on September 7. In other years Apple has held four events though, and in 2024 has already held one event (in May). Will Apple hold four events in 2024?

Read on to find out what events and new Apple product launches the company has in store for 2024.

When is Apple’s next event?

Apple held an event titled ‘Let loose’ on Tuesday May 7 , at 7am PT, but when will the next event be?

Apple will kick off WWDC in June with another keynote event. Apple has already announced WWDC24 will take place from June 10-14 , starting with a keynote on June 10 at 10am PT.

What time will the next Apple event start?

The WWDC keynote will start at 10 am PT. That translates to the following times in the countries where most of our readers live:

• U.S.: at 10 am (PST/PDT), 11 am (MST/MDT), noon (CST/CDT), 1 pm (EST/EDT)
• Canada: as above, and 2 pm (AST/ADT)
• U.K.: at 6 pm (GMT/BST)
• Europe: at 7pm (CET/CEST), 8 pm (EET/EEST)
• India: at 10.30 pm (IST)
• Australia: Next day at 1 am (AWST/AWDT), 2.30 am (ACST/ACDT), 3 am (AEST/AEDT)
• New Zealand: Next day at 5 am (NZST/NZDT)

How long does an Apple event last?

Apple keynotes usually last between one and two hours and feature CEO Tim Cook along with various other Apple executives. WWDC and the September event tend to be longer keynotes; the spring and late-fall events can be slightly shorter.

When does Apple usually hold events?

Apple holds three or four live or live-streamed events throughout the year where the company unveils its latest products and plans during a keynote address. They are usually held during similar times of the year:

• March/April: Spring event (in 2024 this was held in May)
• June: WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference)
• September: Fall event (aka iPhone and Apple Watch launch event)
• October/November: Late-fall event(s)

This event calendar is by no means set in stone, though, with the spring and October events being less regular. Some years, Apple doesn’t hold a spring event at all, as was the case in 2023.

The summer and September events are more predictable, with software coming at WWDC in June and iPhones and Apple Watches in September. The October event often sees Apple launch new Macs, but this is another one that changes from year to year.

What Apple events will take place in 2024?

Here are the events we expect to see in the remainder of 2024, and what could launch.

WWDC: June 10-14 2024

WWDC will take place from June 10-14 with the event kicking the conference off at 10am on June 10, 2024.

Apple uses WWDC each year to unveil the latest versions of its operating systems, so in 2024 we’ll get a preview of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18, and possibly an update to Apple’s realityOS.

The WWDC keynote is where Apple will announce its next major operating system releases: iOS and iPadOS 18 , macOS 15 , tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. Expect to hear a lot about AI this year.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset hasn’t yet launched in locations including the U.K. Europe, Canada and Australia, so Apple could mention a date for the worldwide launch.

Apple sometimes announces new hardware at WWDC, so we could see new Macs: Mac Studio M3 Max and M3 Ultra and Mac Pro with the same chips, although now that the iPad Pro is shipping with M4 chips perhaps Apple will jump to that generation. We may also see a new Mac mini with M3 and M3 Pro – or that may wait for the M4.

Following the keynote on the Monday, developer events and sessions will run throughout the week.

Dates for WWDC:

• WWDC 2024: June 10-14
• WWDC 2023: June 5-9
• WWDC 2022: June 6-10
• WWDC 2021: June 7-11
• WWDC 2020: June 22-26
• WWDC 2019: June 3-7
• WWDC 2018: June 4-8
• WWDC 2017: June 5-9

iPhone 16 launch event: September 2024

Apple always holds an event in September, and almost always uses this to announce a new iPhone and Apple Watch. (The only exception in recent memory was in 2020, as a result of Covid-related production issues. That year the iPhone was announced in October, but there was still a September event.)

What else could we see? A new iPad mini and iPad Air . The AirPods could get an update (or two) and we might even see a HomePod with a screen .

Here are the past few Apple September event dates:

• 2023: Tuesday, September 12
• 2022: Tuesday, September 13
• 2022: Wednesday, September 7
• 2021: Tuesday, September 14
• 2020: Tuesday, September 15
• 2019: Tuesday, September 10
• 2018: Wednesday, September 12
• 2017: Tuesday, September 12

October 2024 Event

There could be iPad and Mac events in October and/or November 2024. But this is a long way off so we won’t get into too much detail just yet.

• 2020: Tuesday, October 13 and Tuesday, November 10
• 2019: No event
• 2018: Tuesday, October 30

We expect Apple to launch new iPads and Macs in the late fall/autumn.

Apple iPad event 2024: Watch Apple unveil new iPads right here

We’re still well over a month out from WWDC , but Apple went ahead and snuck in another event . On Tuesday, May 7 at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET , the company is set to unveil the latest additions to the iPad line. According to the rumor mill , that list includes: a new iPad Pro, iPad Air, Apple Pencil and a keyboard case.

More surprisingly, the event may also see the launch of the new M4 chip, a little over six months after the company unveiled three new M3 chips in one fell swoop. Why the quick silicon refresh? Well, for starters, word on the street is that Apple launched the M3 later than expected (likely owing to supply chain issues), forcing the company to launch all three chips at the same event.

Couple that with the fact that Microsoft is rumored to be launching its own third-party silicon at Build at the end of May, and you start to understand why the company opted not to wait. An announcement may be even more pressing, given that the Microsoft/ARM chips are said to offer “industry-leading performance” — an apparent shot across Apple’s bow. Could a new chip also mean new Macs? That would be a short refresh cycle for the current crop, but it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

What does seem certain, however, is a new iPad Pro with an OLED display, a 12.9-inch iPad Air and new gestures for the Apple Pencil. Also, expect plenty of AI chatter. It’s 2024, after all. You can watch along live at the link below, and stay tuned to TechCrunch for news as it breaks.

Are We Talking Too Much About Mental Health?

Recent studies cast doubt on whether large-scale mental health interventions are making young people better. Some even suggest they can have a negative effect.

In recent years, mental health has become a central subject in childhood and adolescence. Teenagers narrate their psychiatric diagnosis and treatment on TikTok and Instagram. School systems, alarmed by rising levels of distress and self-harm, are introducing preventive coursework in emotional self-regulation and mindfulness.

Now, some researchers warn that we are in danger of overdoing it. Mental health awareness campaigns, they argue, help some young people identify disorders that badly need treatment — but they have a negative effect on others, leading them to over-interpret their symptoms and see themselves as more troubled than they are.

The researchers point to unexpected results in trials of school-based mental health interventions in the United Kingdom and Australia: Students who underwent training in the basics of mindfulness , cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy did not emerge healthier than peers who did not participate, and some were worse off, at least for a while.

And new research from the United States shows that among young people, “self-labeling” as having depression or anxiety is associated with poor coping skills, like avoidance or rumination.

In a paper published last year , two research psychologists at the University of Oxford, Lucy Foulkes and Jack Andrews, coined the term “prevalence inflation” — driven by the reporting of mild or transient symptoms as mental health disorders — and suggested that awareness campaigns were contributing to it.

“It’s creating this message that teenagers are vulnerable, they’re likely to have problems, and the solution is to outsource them to a professional,” said Dr. Foulkes, a Prudence Trust Research Fellow in Oxford’s department of experimental psychology, who has written two books on mental health and adolescence.

Until high-quality research has clarified these unexpected negative effects, they argue, school systems should proceed cautiously with large-scale mental health interventions.

“It’s not that we need to go back to square one, but it’s that we need to press pause and reroute potentially,” Dr. Foulkes said. “It’s possible that something very well-intended has overshot a bit and needs to be brought back in.”

This remains a minority view among specialists in adolescent mental health, who mostly agree that the far more urgent problem is lack of access to treatment.

About 60 percent of young Americans with severe depression receive no treatment, according to Mental Health America, a nonprofit research group. In crisis, desperate families fall back on emergency rooms, where teens often remain for days before a psychiatric bed opens up. There is good reason to embrace a preventive approach, teaching schoolchildren basic skills that might forestall crises later, experts say.

Dr. Foulkes said she understood that her argument runs counter to that consensus, and when she began to present it, she braced for a backlash. To her surprise, she said, many educators reached out to express quiet agreement.

“There’s definitely a fear about being the one to say it,” she said.

A deflating result

In the summer of 2022, the results of a landmark study on mindfulness training in British classrooms landed — like a lead balloon.

The trial, My Resilience in Adolescence, or MYRIAD, was ambitious, meticulous and expansive, following about 28,000 teenagers over eight years. It had been launched in a glow of optimism that the practice would pay off, improving the students’ mental health outcomes in later years.

Half of the teenagers were trained by their teachers to direct their attention to the present moment — breathing, physical sensations or everyday activities — in 10 lessons of 30 to 50 minutes apiece.

The results were disappointing . The authors reported “no support for our hypothesis” that mindfulness training would improve students’ mental health. In fact, students at highest risk for mental health problems did somewhat worse after receiving the training, the authors concluded.

But by the end of the eight-year project, “mindfulness is already embedded in a lot of schools, and there are already organizations making money from selling this program to schools,” said Dr. Foulkes, who had assisted on the study as a postdoctoral research associate. “And it’s very difficult to get the scientific message out there.”

Why, one might ask, would a mental health program do harm?

Researchers in the study speculated that the training programs “bring awareness to upsetting thoughts,” encouraging students to sit with darker feelings, but without providing solutions, especially for societal problems like racism or poverty. They also found that the students didn’t enjoy the sessions and didn’t practice at home.

Another explanation is that mindfulness training could encourage “co-rumination,” the kind of long, unresolved group discussion that churns up problems without finding solutions.

As the MYRIAD results were being analyzed, Dr. Andrews led an evaluation of Climate Schools, an Australian intervention based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, in which students observed cartoon characters navigating mental health concerns and then answered questions about practices to improve mental health.

Here, too, he found negative effects. Students who had taken the course reported higher levels of depression and anxiety symptoms six months and 12 months later.

Co-rumination appears to be higher in girls, who tend to come into the program more distressed, as well as more attuned to their friends, he said. “It might be,” he said, “that they kind of get together and make things a little bit worse for each other.”

Dr. Andrews, a Wellcome Trust research fellow, has since joined an effort to improve Climate Schools by addressing negative effects. And he has concluded that schools should slow down until “we know the evidence base a bit more.” Sometimes, he said, “doing nothing is better than doing something.”

The awareness paradox

One problem with mental health awareness, some research suggests, is that it may not help to put a label to your symptoms.

Isaac Ahuvia, a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook University, recently tested this in a study of 1,423 college students . Twenty-two percent “self-labeled” as having depression, telling researchers “I am depressed” or “I have depression,” but 39 percent met the diagnostic criteria for depression.

He found that the students who self-labeled felt that they had less control over depression and were more likely to catastrophize and less likely to respond to distress by putting their difficulties in perspective, compared with peers who had similar depression symptoms.

Jessica L. Schleider, a co-author of the self-labeling study, said this was no surprise. People who self-label “appear to be viewing depression as a biological inevitability,” she said. “People who don’t view emotions as malleable, view them as set and stuck and uncontrollable, tend to cope less well because they don’t see a point to trying.”

But Dr. Schleider, an associate professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University and the director of the university’s Lab for Scalable Mental Health, pushed back on the prevalence inflation hypothesis. She disagreed with the claim that students are overdiagnosing themselves, noting that Mr. Ahuvia’s findings suggest otherwise.

Awareness campaigns are bound to have multiple effects, helping some students and not others. And ultimately, she argued, the priority for public health should be reaching young people in the most distress.

“The urgency of the mental health crisis is so clear,” she said. “In the partnerships that I have, the emphasis is on the kids truly struggling right now who have nothing — we need to help them — more so than a possible risk for a subset of kids who aren’t really struggling.”

Maybe, she said, we need to look beyond the “universal, school-assembly-style approach,” to targeted, light-touch interventions, which research has shown can be effective at decreasing anxiety and conduct disorders, especially in younger children.

“There is a risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater,” Dr. Schleider said. “The response can’t be ‘Forget all of it.’ It should be ‘What about this intervention was unhelpful?’”

Other researchers echoed her concern, pointing to studies that show that on average, students benefit from social and emotional learning courses.

One of the largest, a 2023 meta-analysis of 252 classroom programs in 53 countries, found that students who participated performed better academically, displayed better social skills and had lower levels of emotional distress or behavioral problems. In that context, negative effects in a handful of trials appear modest, the researchers said.

“We clearly have not figured out how to do them yet, but I can’t imagine any population-based intervention that the field got right the first time,” said Dr. Andrew J. Gerber, the president and medical director of Silver Hill Hospital and a practicing child and adolescent psychiatrist.

“Really, if you think about almost everything we do in schools, we don’t have great evidence for it working,” he added. “That doesn’t mean we don’t do it. It just means that we’re constantly thinking about ways to improve it.”

‘We want everyone to have it’

These debates are taking place a long way away from classrooms, where mental health curriculums are increasingly commonplace.

Allyson Kangisser, a counselor at Woodsdale Elementary School in Wheeling, W.Va., said the focus in her school is on basic coping skills. In the early grades, students are asked, “What things can you do to take care of yourself when you’re having big feelings?”

Starting in third grade, they take on more complex material, such as watching cartoon characters to distinguish transient stress from chronic conditions like depression. “We’re not trying to have them diagnose themselves,” Ms. Kangisser said. “We are saying, what do you feel — this one? Or this one?”

At the school’s sixth annual mental health fair last month, Woodsdale students walked through a giant inflatable brain, its lobes neatly labeled. They did yoga stretches and talked about regulating their emotions. Ms. Kangisser said the event is valuable precisely because it is universal, so troubled children are not singled out.

“The mental health fair, everybody does it,” she said. “It’s not ‘You need it, and you don’t.’ We want everyone to have it, because you just never know.”

By the time the students reach college, they will have absorbed enormous amounts of information about mental health — from school, but also from social media and from one another.

Dr. Jessica Gold, chief wellness officer for the University of Tennessee system, said the college students she sees are recognizably different — more comfortable speaking about their emotions and more willing to be vulnerable. They also overuse diagnostic terms and have the self-assurance to question a psychiatrist’s judgment.

“It’s sort of a double-edged sword,” she said. “We want people to talk about this more, but we don’t want that to lead to overdiagnosis or incorrect diagnosis or overtreatment. We want it to lead to normalizing of having feelings.”

Lucy Kim, a Yale senior who has lobbied for better mental health support on campus, described the prevalence inflation hypothesis as “disheartening, dismissive and potentially dangerous,” providing another way to discount the experiences of young people.

“As a college student, I see a generation of young people around me impacted by a depth and breadth of loneliness, exhaustion and disillusionment suggestive of a malaise that goes deeper than the general vicissitudes of life,” said Ms. Kim, 23.

Overdiagnosis does happen, she said, and so does glorification of mental health disorders. But stigma and barriers to treatment remain the bigger problem. “I can confidently say I have never heard anyone respond to disclosures of depression with ‘That’s so cool, I wish I had that, too,’” she said.
