'I can't charge $20 for a Happy Meal': McDonald's franchisee responds to California's new fast-food worker wages

A McDonald's franchisee said he raised menu prices in response to California's new $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers but that there's a limit to how much customers would pay.

"We have looked at price, although I can't charge $20 for a Happy Meal," Scott Rodrick, the owner of 18 McDonald's restaurants in Northern California, told CNN . "My customers' appetite to absorb menu-board prices is not unlimited."

The cost of a Happy Meal varies at locations around the US. On Uber Eats for a McDonald's in Sacramento, California, Happy Meals range from $7 for a hamburger Happy Meal to $8.60 for the six-piece Chicken McNuggets option.

Franchisees are largely able to set their own prices. Rodrick said he already raised prices at his restaurants by 5% to 7% in the past three months to prepare for the new legislation.

A McDonald's franchisee in Los Angeles County told KTLA 5 News recently that if she raised her prices enough to offset the wage increase, her food would be unaffordable.

California set its minimum wage for fast-food workers at $20 an hour on Monday, which is 25% more than the state's general minimum wage. The legislation, AB 1228, affects limited-service chains with at least 60 locations nationwide.

The state's newly created Fast Food Council can raise the minimum wage by up to 3.5% yearly, depending on inflation.

Restaurant owners have been evaluating various measures to offset the bigger paychecks. Many, like Rodrick, said they planned to make diners pay for at least some of the wage increase.

Some restaurants are slashing labor, too, by reducing how many hours their staff work or even laying some off . But Rodrick told CNN that rather than cutting back on labor, he would expand his delivery operations and postpone major investments, like updating dining rooms and buying new grills.

"I've got to look at every option for business survivability," Rodrick told Fox News. "I've got to be aggressive in seeking labor-efficient growth. I'm going to have to explore more digital and delivery avenues. I'm going to obviously have to make, like any smaller-business owner, harder choices around big capital expenditures."

In his interview with Fox News, Rodrick emphasized the nature of franchisees as small-business owners. "Franchisees are not large, global corporations," he said.

Fast-food workers and their unions have been pushing for higher wages in the industry for years.

"We are in this fight because workers are worth more and our families deserve better than poverty wages," Angelica Hernandez, a cook trainer at McDonald's who sits on the Fast Food Council, said at a press conference on Monday. Her comments were translated from Spanish.

"Even though we are the engine of a billion-dollar industry, too many of us struggle to keep up with rent our bills and the rising cost of living," Hernandez said.

Vote yes on A

Glenwood’s Question A is a vote to allow citizens to vote on the disposition of City lands. Significantly, it does not restrict development on private lands in any way. 

Currently just four Council members can dictate the disposition of City lands behind the high school, in Vogelaar Park, and around the Confluence. 

Plans for the Confluence show a hotel, retail, and high-density housing.  Couldn’t the Confluence be the best park in the State? Currently you don’t have a say on what happens to the Confluence, four Council members do.  Get that say.  Vote YES on A.   

The Comprehensive Plan shows areas for possible annexation and identifies lands that don’t require a public vote to sell or develop. Some Councilpersons have toured possible annexation areas. 

Council says these “theoretical exercises’ aren’t really plans, but they sure smell like plans to me.

Support Local Journalism

Council is discussing rewriting the City Charter because it is old. So is the U.S. Constitution.  Council would no doubt love to eliminate Question A and previous charter changes protecting the airport.  Check out their track record.

Council repeatedly tried to strangle our airport which required a citizen-led charter change to protect.  Council voted for the Donegan development, which you vetoed.  Council sold lands to Habitat for Humanity for $1, forfeiting several million dollars of potential land sales and waived development fees.  I support Habitat, but we should have voted on forfeiting nearly $200 per resident, $1,000 for a family of five.

Council is considering allowing duplexes and triplexes in neighborhoods zoned for single family homes.  Staff proposes that they be granted unlimited authority to waive setbacks and design standards on some units. Of course, setbacks and standards would still apply to your home.

Is Question A anti-affordable housing? Absolutely not. You can decide to approve any project on City land. 

This is bad behavior.  We can’t wait for elections to replace council.  Too much time remains for them to make bad decisions.  Besides, four of them ran unopposed.  What kind of choice is that?  

We need to reel in this council right now.  Give yourself a say.  Vote YES on A.

I just received my ballot in Glenwood Spring’s special election. I respect all of those who serve on city council, past and current, as well as the city employees who keep our fair city operating. That said, I am dismayed at how city government has catered to visitors and people who want to move here over the citizens who call this town home. My faith in the city government to make thoughtful, long- term decisions based on quality of living has been shaken and I support 2A in an attempt to reclaim a seat at the table. Please vote yes on 2A

Business owner clarifies hotel name change

Dear Andy Anderson,

I would personally like to clarify your letter to the editor regarding the Hotel Denver name change. Maxwell Anderson was a train engineer once working the rail line coming through Glenwood Springs. And I assure you, Tony Sherman is not only dedicated to Glenwood Springs, but also, “a big fan of Glenwood Springs.” 

Tony partnered up with me and Jason Barnicoat, the executive chef, here at the Glenwood Canyon Brewpub, in order to carry on the business that we have carefully built over the last decade. In doing this, Tony has proven to be a champion of small and independent business here in Glenwood Springs, while also making great improvements to The Hotel Denver property. He will continue to offer a great amenity to Glenwood Springs by improving upon the hotel and restaurant properties. Already, Tony has spent nearly $6,000,000 while increasing and upgrading the capacity of rooms, upgrading fire safety features, and the failing elevator system. This, in turn, brings more business and new opportunities to the area. Tony has also championed Wild Coffee Roasters and Mona Lisa to make any required changes they needed to, to increase and sustain their businesses. Really, a name change is all it is, with many new improvements for our thousands of out-of-town guests.

Sports change, and that’s good

Congrats to Caitlyn Clark. Anytime you have someone saying “back in my day” you’ve officially made it. I have a couple of counter points to Mike V’s column. 

In Pete’s first season playing, there was a total of seven black athletes across all sports in the SEC. Not until a year after Pete left for the NBA was there a black athlete playing for a team at every SEC school across any sport. Just like Babe Ruth getting the benefit of not having to face Dominicans throwing 92 mph sliders. Pete had the benefit of playing in a segregated basketball league. Today’s pool of basketball players is the best it’s ever been. The sport is the most accessible it’s ever been. More players come from overseas. It’s now tougher than ever to be the best player in your sport. 

In response to the 3-point line argument. In Pete’s senior year, LSU was 8th in scoring and finished with 93.3 ppg. Iowa is the top scoring women’s team with 91.3ppg. How is that possible? The 3-point line has made scoring so much easier, yet the top offense is scoring fewer points per game?? By the way- the 8th best scoring team this year is Oral Roberts with 82.1 ppg. Pete was the best scoring player in an era where teams didn’t play much defense. 

We can do better by celebrating new accomplishments AND still remembering the greatness of players of previous eras.

Book banning not a red herring

Was Robin Pruett’s letter an April 1st joke?

She wrote, “The people who request that these obscene pornographic materials be put under glass with an age restriction on them have never mentioned banning books.” In fact, John Lepkowski called, at a public meeting, for the burning of the books he didn’t think anyone else should read (although he brags about checking them all out so no one else can). Trish O’Grady clearly stated in her highly misleading petition that if the library wouldn’t put age restrictions on (if public comment can be trusted) some 40-50 books per branch, so over 300 titles, then they should be removed from the library. “Removing books from the library” is what banning *means*.

Robin also notes that the commissioners have an attorney on hand to consult with, so their decision to break with their own protocol and practice since 2008 (to approve board members, rather than advertise for, interview, and select as they now plan to do) was “responsible and legal.” The library has an attorney too, and counseled the library that putting library books “in a locked room,” or “locked case” or “top shelf” (the recommendations vary) and checking IDs to read library books was a violation of the First Amendment. That would make it *illegal*.

The biggest mystery: why the county commissioners have decided that a small number of people who can’t keep their own stories straight should get to decide the reading options for the entire county.
