Graduate Program

Master of arts in history.

Randolph Hall, College of Charleston

The latest College of Charleston Magazine has a wonderful article on our own Lauren Davila . Lauren earned her BA & MA right here in the Department of History , and she's currently an adjunct professor for us. As a grad student, Lauren, 'uncovered the largest known domestic slave auction, which took place in Charleston.' Click to read about Lauren's historic discovery !

Students in the Master of Arts in History program at the College of Charleston are challenged in ways that enhance their education and provide access to the larger scholarly discussion in historical scholarship. This program -- offered jointly with the Citadel Graduate College -- features small classes rich in stimulating discussion and analysis. The City of Charleston provides ample archival resources, research sites, and employment opportunities.

The program offers a Concentration in Public History . Students enrolled in the concentration will gain experience in the field through community-partner coursework, graduate assistantships, and internship positions in a variety of public history institutions in and around the city of Charleston. The concentration collaborates with several resources on the CofC campus including the Avery Research Center , the  South Carolina Historical Society Archives , The Lowcountry Digital History Initiative , and the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston . Additionally, the program offers an emphasis in African American history that exists as an interdisciplinary program.

The history faculty and our partners at the Citadel offer a wealth of expertise in United States history, European history, or global history. The faculty has research specialties in a variety of fields, including:

  • Southern History
  • African-American History
  • History of the Atlantic World
  • History of Religion
  • History of Popular Culture
  • African History
  • European History
  • History of Gender and Sexuality
  • History of the Twentieth Century

The Master of Arts in History provides an excellent preparation for students who choose to continue their education by pursuing doctoral study in history, pursue opportunities in public history, or continue in an already established career.

Graduate Study in Psychology

The student who wants to pursue a career as a professional in the field of psychology may find it necessary to continue their training in a graduate program. This additional higher education is the case with most academic disciplines. Because graduate school is a major undertaking, it requires a serious commitment of your time, labor, and energy. You should be fully aware of the commitment you will be making.

If you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in psychology, consider purchasing or borrowing a copy of the annually-revised APA publication, Graduate Study in Psychology (there may be a reasonably current copy in the College library).  You should also peruse the following useful links relating to psychology graduate study:

  • Graduate Education Resources (American Psychological Association)
  • Psychology Graduate School Locator (by state & program type)
  • Are you on the Right Path? (American Psychological Association)

If you plan to apply to graduate schools in Psychology, you need to work hard at maintaining a strong GPA. You should also consider gaining psychology work experience through vehicles such as volunteer work and Internship Experience (see our resources in the "Working in Psychology" section).

In choosing psychology courses, consider additional courses in research methods and statistics, such as our advanced labs and statistics courses (these are requirements for the BS in Psychology already), and explore the Independent Study and Bachelor's Essay options that exist for juniors and seniors with strong academic records.  Graduate schools like to see evidence of undergraduate research experience, and the latter two courses are traditional sources of individualized research experience under the guidance of a faculty mentor.  To get an idea of the scope of research events and accomplishments at the College, take a look at the Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities web site.

The process of applying to graduate programs can take some time, so start reasonably early. In your Junior year you will need to start gathering applications from graduate schools and preparing for the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) (this link takes you to the GRE Resources undergraduate student area of the Association for Psychological Science). You will also need to begin deciding whom to approach for letters of recommendation.

Talk to fellow majors in your classes, Psi Chi, and the Psychology Club about how they are handling the graduate school process.  “Bounce around” your thoughts with your favorite faculty members.  Talk to a variety of people about your interests, and take full advantage of the online and library resources available to students at the College.

The area is a scenic place to live, as the campus has made appearances in feature films including "The Notebook," "Dear John" and "The Patriot."

The College of Charleston’s sports teams, known as the Cougars, compete in the NCAA Division I Colonial Athletic Association and have been traditionally dominant in baseball, women’s volleyball and sailing. The school does not have a football team. The student body is more than 60 percent female, and about 20 percent of students are active in Greek life. The College of Charleston offers more than 30 graduate degree and certificate programs through The Graduate School of the University of Charleston, South Carolina. Notable alumni of the College of Charleston include actor Matt Czuchry, who has played lead roles on the television shows "Gilmore Girls" and "The Good Wife," and novelist Padgett Powell, author of "Edisto."

Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest in the College of Charleston’s Graduate Program in Marine Biology (GPMB).

Some highlights of the GPMB are:

  • Program based at the  Grice Marine Laboratory (GML).
  • Over 100 active faculty from the College of Charleston  (CofC), the  Marine Resources Research Institute  of the  South Carolina Department of Natural Resources  (MRRI), the  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration  (NOAA), the  National Ocean Services  (NOS), the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), the  National Institute of Standards and Technology  (NIST), the  Medical University of South Carolina  (MUSC), the Hollings Marine Laboratory  (HML),  Coastal Carolina University , and  the Citadel .
  • Students need not have an advisor, project, or funding identified prior to enrollment.
  • A rigorous master's-only program, both with respect to coursework and thesis research expectations.

We support our students by offering them Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, or Graduate Fellowships .

Graduates from our program  have been successful in using their degree to pursue a Ph.D. degree or directly enter the job market. This success is based in large part on our ability to train students in both basic and applied areas of science.

The Grice Marine Laboratory is located at Fort Johnson along with the labs of MRRI, NOAA, NOS, NIST, and MUSC. In total, about 400 personnel at Fort Johnson make up a vibrant and exciting community of marine scientists and students. We think that you will find our location near a major metropolitan area on one of the most unspoiled stretches of the eastern seaboard a particularly appealing place to study marine biology.

Two of the College of Charleston’s master’s programs have been recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Graduate Schools for 2024. The College’s one-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) program ranked within the Top 100 Best Business Schools, and the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) program ranked within the Top 100 Best Public Affairs Programs.

The College’s MBA program came in at No. 81 in this year’s rankings, an impressive 17-point improvement from last year.

“Our MBA program is on the rise,” says Paul Schwager , dean of the College of Charleston School of Business. “This latest ranking proves that the high-touch, relationship-based education we offer is still valued by our students and employers.”

The 149 full-time MBA programs on this year’s list were ranked based on career placement success, student excellence and qualitative assessments by experts.

“This national recognition validates the hard work of faculty, staff, alumni, students and our executive volunteers,” says Ron Magnuson, executive director of graduate and executive programs for the School of Business. “We are proud to be recognized among the top MBA programs in the nation.”

Also recognized as one of the best in the nation is the College of Charleston’s M.P.A. program .

“The M.P.A. program is excited and honored to receive this recognition of the quality of our program from our peers,” says Matt Nowlin , associate professor of political science and interim director of the program. “This is due to the dedication and hard work of our faculty, students and alumni. We are committed to continuing to promote the value of public service and providing a high-quality education to future public leaders.”

Designed for prospective students looking to further their education beyond college, the Best Graduate Schools rankings evaluate programs in a variety of disciplines. By collecting graduate school data annually, U.S. News is able to present the most current figures on enrollment, job placement, faculty and other critical quality indicators that help prospective students make informed decisions. The College of Graduate Studies at MUSC is committed to the graduate training of biomedical research scientists, providing them with the critical thinking skills and experimental expertise that prepare them to work at the interface of basic biological sciences and human health and disease. We believe that the single most important experience a university can offer is the opportunity to make exciting new discoveries through research.

Master of Science in Environmental and Sustainability Studies

The Environmental and Sustainability Studies (EVSS) Program at the College of Charleston has been designed to provide students with an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental problems through graduate level studies of both Policy and Science.

This interdisciplinary focus allows us to address a wide variety of the resource, development, and planning pressures that currently face society. Through our core and elective course curriculum, faculty expertise, and specialization development (the clustering of courses in areas such as coastal and wetlands management, environmental planning, and environmental hazards), the EVSS Program provides training that addresses each of these challenges. Our alumni are finding employment in a wide variety of fields, where their training in both Science and Policy serves them well.

As an interdisciplinary program, the EVSS Program is not housed in a single academic department at the College of Charleston. Instead, six departments ( Biology , Geology and Environmental Geosciences , Mathematics , Physics and Astronomy , Political Science , and Economics ) contribute core and elective coursework and faculty time to the program. Faculty from many other departments and off-campus institutes and agencies are an invaluable part of the EVSS Program as well.

For any questions that are not answered online, please email Lucy Davis ( click here to e-mail ), Program Coordinator.
