DYPIU supports interdisciplinary research activities cutting across various disciplines e.g. Engineering including Computer Science; Bioengineering/Biosciences, Management, Journalism and Mass communication. With focus on problem solving, discipline is not a barrier for Ph.D. work.

Admissions are open to students for 2023-24 academic year.

Financial assistance may be available in the form of Teaching Assistantship to the tune of @ INR 31K-40K pm

Details of Research Fields

A lot of computational approaches are being used by the researchers at the University to develop strategies to tackle pandemics using COVID as an example and using multi-pronged strategy like designing peptides, repurposing drugs, designing multifunctional epitopes etc. Another area of importance is antimicrobial resistance strategies. Design and development of therapeutics, computational modelling, Vaccine design, AI and Molecular Dynamics.

Brain computer interface using electrical activity in the brain to monitor behaviour, learning, and manage consciousness. Use of BCI to help compromised individuals and various assistive technologies to aid in special needs are in progress.

Tissue Engineering strategies for developing lab on chip models, and Using AI for developing novel biomaterials and regenerative medicines are some of the areas being pursued.

Nanomaterials for use in diagnostics, therapy, genetic manipulation and theragnostic adding to Personalized medicine

Quantum Algorithms for Nuclear Fusion and Quantum Machine Learning for Near Term Quantum Computers are some of the works going on in the domain of Quantum computations

In the process of environment care, DYPIU is engaged in projects related to reduction in carbon emission, vertical farming, waste management and clean energy generation schemes.

Smart health care practices involve better diagnostic approaches and prevention strategies involving biological, physical and electronic systems.

AI/ML is being used in various different areas to solve problems and achieve faster accurate outputs where it is humanly difficult. From driverless cars to how doctors identify and treat diseases, AI is poised to forge a future of endless new possibilities. At DYPIU, we are working on various AI problems including Foundational AI Research, Convolutional Neural Networks.

Nuclear fusion mimics the natural reactions occurring within the Sun, and has been a goal of scientists around the world since the 1950s. The process has been hailed as the “holy grail” of clean energy, as it is almost limitless, requires no fossil fuels, and leaves behind no hazardous waste. Nuclear fusion is considered the holy grail of energy production. However, in addition to this, utilization of plasma-based processes to manufacture artificial diamonds has been achieved. A group of experts of plasma physics are working in DYPIU for a variety of applications.

Virtual technologies to synthesize and create art forms and facilities.

The emphasis is on developing smart robotics to help in surgical operations on Human body.

The focus on energy is to create and utilize green and clean energy for the future and to conserve and reverse the environmental damages. Nuclear fusion is one such possibility. A Project supported by US investors called “Project Sanlayan '' was started at DYPIU as the first private project of this kind in the country.

Chronic health problems and solutions, as the name suggests, deal with nagging debilitating problems in metabolism and health. A microbiome lab has been established in DYPIU as part of Project Sushrusha. In parallel other relevant work is going on to help in this project.

Some of the key areas of research in Advanced Manufacturing include the development of Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) for applications in several areas such as Prototype development, Technology Development Materials in the fields of Engineering, Architecture, Design, Fine Arts.

Research is proposed to be initiated in areas of, Digital Employee engagement, Talent management, Social Media recruitment processes.

Technology in Finance has brought a revolution in business operations. Fintech research is proposed in areas like Cyber Security, Regulatory Frameworks, studying the impact and potential of Blockchain on securities transactions, Fintech Platforms and strategies.

Digital Business is the way of new business accompanying and impacting everything in our lives today. Customers and Businesses both perceive the world through online lenses. This has paved the way for research in Digital consumer Behaviour, Using Artificial Intelligence to enhance digital marketing, impact of blockchain on Digital Advertising, applications of Marketing Analytics tools in deciphering consumer psychology etc.

Communication, Advertising, Public Relations, Journalism,

Gender: The scholars will do In-depth understanding of gender as a social construct, the different gender roles and their creation, representation of gender in different areas, theories and concepts of gender, third gender, feminism and the stages and waves.

Cinema and Society: Over the years, Cinema has achieved an academic status. The research will foster original thought and intellectual initiative. It will cultivate media-literate scholars capable of navigating a variety of mediums, geographic contexts, and historical eras, from early cinema to the digital era.

Theories and Concepts of Communication: Research in Communication will analyse emerging and enduring forms of public communication and the institutional and economic conditions that sustain them. They will employ a range of research methods, including ethnography, textual and historical analysis, and political economic approaches to media industries.

Program Learning Outcomes

Residential Requirement

The minimum residency requirement for the PhD program is listed in above Table . During the period of residency, the student should be available on DYPIU campus for academic and research activities during all working hours of the institute. Moreover, the student should have registered for a total of at least 4 credits during the regular semester.

Academic Advising

A student entering the PhD program will be advised in the selection of courses/faculty mentor/supervisor by the University Research Coordinator. The student is then expected to obtain consent from a member of faculty at DYPIU to supervise his/her PhD thesis. This must be done before the end of semester in which the student clears the PhD comprehensive examination.

Qualifying Examination

Students registered for the PhD Program must pass a qualifying examination that is designed to test the overall skill sets of the student in the relevant subjects.
Students admitted with for PhD program may appear in the qualifying examination earliest by the end of First semester itself, but must pass the examination before the end of the second semester after their first registration.
Students should obtain a minimum 50% marks to successfully clear the qualifying examination. Students will get two chances to pass the qualifying examination. Those who fail to clear the qualifying examination in the second attempt will have to discontinue from the Program.

Financial Assistance

All those admitted as full-time PhD students will be eligible for financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantships (TA)/Research Assistantships (RAs). The assistantship is Rs. 31,000 per month till the end of the semester when the candidate clears the qualifying examination and completes the course work, whichever is later.

For the subsequent period, the assistantship gets revised to Rs. 40,000/- per month. A candidate can avail of the assistantship for a maximum duration of four years after passing the qualifying examination or clearing of Synopsis, whichever is earlier. The responsibilities associated with the teaching/research assistantship include conducting laboratory courses and tutorials for undergraduate students and assisting in teaching, research projects, and academic administration as assigned.

Research Progress Evaluation

Once a PhD student clears his/her qualifying examination, Dean (Research and Development) will form a Research Progress Evaluation (RPE) committee for assessing the PhD student’s progress in every semester. The PhD student is required to present his/her progress in the form of Research Progress Seminar (RPS) to the RPE committee. Students are also required to give a seminar in a topic not related to their research topic to broaden their knowledge. The RPE committee will assess the progress report of the student in the form of Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory, and will accordingly advise the student.

Admission to the PhD program is through institutional entrance exam/interview or both as decided by the University Selection committee. The date of entrance exam/interview will be intimated to the students. At the time of interview students can discuss their prior research experience and future research interests.

Candidates may avail of any existing fellowship during PhD program
Due consideration would be given to candidates with experience as research assistants/fellows working with recognized research institutions/industries during the admission process

Candidates with self-funded fellowships will be preferred

Consideration will be given to students with relevant industry/academic experience. Applicants are encouraged to include hands-on project experience, if any, along with their application
Full-time research associates or fellows working with recognized research institutions and those who have publications in refereed journals or conference proceedings will be appreciated

Registration Fee - Rs. 2,500 per Semester
Caution Deposit - Rs. 10,000 (Refundable at the end of the program)

Duration of the course is 4-6 years, depending on the research topic and efforts involved.

The following candidates are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme: Candidates who have completed:

A 1-year/2-semester master' s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master's degree programme after a 3-year bachelor's degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master's degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institutions accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the commission from time to time.

Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.

Candidates who have completed the M. Phil programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.

Reservation is applicable only to Maharashtra domicile candidates provided they submit the necessary documents for reservation before interview. Outside Maharashtra candidates will be considered in open category.

Candidates satisfying eligibility criterion shall be called to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test conducted by MITWPU.

PhD entrance test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50% provided that relaxation from 50% to 45% shall be allowed for the candidates belongs to SC/ST/OBC (Non creamy layer)/Differently abled category, Economically Weaker section (EWS) and other category of candidates. The syllabus of entrance test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the university for test qualifying candidates. For selection of candidates a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given. For GATE/NET/JRF /SET/GPAT/CEED qualified students, the selection will be based on Interview/Viva Voce

The recommended candidates will be intimated through email about their selection and the candidates will be offered Ph.D. provisional admission.

The eligibility of a candidate is provisional as per information provided by the candidate in his/her application form and is subject to verification of minimum eligibility conditions for admission to the program, educational documents and reservation documents (if any).

University keep rights to cancel admission of the Ph.D. scholars in the case of misconduct by the scholar, unsatisfactory progress/absent for consecutive two progress seminars, failure in any examination related to Ph.D., fabrication found in educational and reservation documents, candidate is found ineligible, involved in plagiarism in paper publications and thesis.

Provisional eligibility to appear in the selection process is no guarantee for admission to the program.

Candidates who will join PhD program full time, they will be provided with the stipend as per MITWPU norms.

Research being an integral part of any higher education system, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) (SIU) is well known in promoting research in all its constituents, centres and departments. Ph.D. program in engineering is started in 2010-11 in Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT) under the umbrella of Faculty of Engineering (FOE), Symbiosis International (Deemed University). About 187 research scholars are pursuing their research studies with more than 123 research supervisors.

Our structured Ph.D. program not only provides flexibility to become a discipline-specific subject expert but also encourages innovation in carrying out research work of multi-disciplinary nature. This approach catalyses the most promising discoveries and innovative solutions to real-world problems.

SIT has motivated, intellectual manpower among its faculty who conducts research as an integral part of their responsibilities. This environment empowers teachers to incorporate and distribute the knowledge and to create new knowledge. SIU has enabled a new scheme for the professional working under different funded projects in the Institute, simultaneously work for their Ph.D. degree also.

Uriel is a published researcher with interests in leadership, negotiated work arrangements, and remote work. He aspires to become a research professor in management upon completing his PhD. Uriel teaches HRLR 315, Research Methods and Analysis; HRLR 211, Introduction to Organizational Leadership; and HRLR 212, Career Management.

The Graduate Student Teaching Award recognizes a graduate student who has demonstrated evidence of dedication to instruction through experimentation and successful implementation of innovative techniques and/or contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning, including experiential learning; and evidence of excellence in instruction as demonstrated by the impact on students' careers and colleagues' teaching/advising practices.

Uriel's PhD advisor Dr. Chenwei Liao noted, "As a first-generation college student, Uriel values the transformative power of education and integrates this perspective into his teaching to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in his classes. He wants students to learn the material of the course in ways that are applicable to their careers, not just for exams. His classroom is an inclusive space for all to explore their identities as a leader and as a future human resources professional," shared student Maura L.

"Besides research, teaching has also been a rewarding aspect of my doctoral journey in the School of Human Resources & Labor Relations at MSU. The CSS graduate student teaching award only further motivates me to continue serving our students to the best of my ability. I would like to thank everyone involved in this award nomination and the College of Social Science for this opportunity," said Uriel.

Amelia Ward, Ivy Tech Bloomington graduate, wins Indiana Career & Technical Education award

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education recognized Ward her for outstanding achievements

Bloomington — Amelia Ward, 2024 Ivy Tech Bloomington design technology graduate, received an Award for Excellence in Career and Technical Education (CTE). The award was presented by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education . She is graduating with both an associate degree in design technology and certificate in architecture.

“Amelia is a born problem-solver and has an innovative spirit,” April Bledsoe, assistant professor and program chair of design technology said. “She has honed a passion for creating objects during her time at Ivy Tech and has developed a goal of reducing waste associated with 3D printing.”

Ward explores ways to recycle 3D printing waste into new product or re-use it in creative ways.

“I loved the ability to make projects,” Ward said. “I was able to use computers to make art, objects, and solve problems I could never do before.”

During her time at Ivy Tech, Ward was selected to participate in a “life-changing” Alternative Spring Break trip. Students traveled to Italy, where they studied culture, history, and engaged in service-learning.

“Amelia had an incredible, unique perspective to add regarding architecture and the evolution of technology,” Bledsoe said.

Ward will continue classes at Ivy Tech to pursue certificates in mechanical design and computer graphics. She is currently searching for full-time employment in her field and has plans to earn her bachelor’s in mechanical engineering.

Campus protests over the Gaza war

How student protests are changing college graduations.

Many of this year's graduating college students were looking forward to their first formal commencement ceremony.

"I was a 2020 graduate in high school," says Isa Johnson, a senior at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Because of the pandemic, her high school graduation couldn't happen in person.

She was excited to finally get a traditional graduation this year, but the unrest on her campus has forced her to adjust her expectations.

After Jewish student organizations at USC raised concerns about valedictorian Asna Tabassum's past social media activity, the school cut Tabassum's speech from commencement. Other students rushed to her defense, and marched on campus in support. Eventually, the administration canceled the school's main commencement , citing safety concerns.

"We were finally going to be able to have... graduation," Johnson says, "and then within a whole week it was all taken away."

Columbia and Emory universities change commencement plans after weeks of turmoil

Across the country, protests on college campuses are running up against graduation season. Over the weekend, ceremonies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Indiana University Bloomington were marked by protests. Graduating students in Michigan interrupted the ceremony with chants, Palestinian flags and banners. At Indiana's commencement, a plane with a banner that read "LET GAZA LIVE!" flew overhead and a group of graduating students staged a walkout.

Schools with upcoming ceremonies are announcing extra safety precautions and venue changes. On Monday, following weeks of campus tensions, Columbia University in New York City joined USC in canceling its main ceremony . It's also moving smaller, school-based ceremonies off the main lawn, where protestors have been gathering, and into an outdoor sports venue. Also on Monday, Emory University, in Atlanta, said it was moving the ceremony to a venue in Duluth, Ga., over 20 miles away.

Johnson, at USC, says she understands why students feel the need to protest, but a lot of her classmates are upset about how their graduation has been affected.

"They're kind of just like, you know, 'I want a normal graduation.' I just wish things could be normal on campus. The atmosphere on campus isn't what it usually is," she says. "I think it makes a lot of people uncomfortable."

How campuses are preparing for graduation

After Oct. 7 – when Hamas attacked Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and taking at least 240 hostages – Israel retaliated by bombarding Gaza. That war has killed at least 34,622 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

In mid-April, college students on campuses around the country began protesting in support of Palestinians. Students are calling for their schools to divest from companies that do business with Israel, among other demands. The movement has led to the arrest of at least 2,500 protestors, according to the Associated Press .

U of Mississippi opens probe over hostile protest that involved racist taunts

Students are organizing in highly visible spaces on campus, like the main quad of a school, and they're often opting for sit-ins rather than passing protests with a scheduled beginning and end. At several schools, students have formed encampments, pitching tents and living outside for days at a time.

At the same time, campuses are preparing to receive families eager to celebrate graduation.

At Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, Calif., the school is still cleaning up from a protest that ended with the student occupation of two campus buildings. The school says graduation ceremonies this coming weekend will be modified for security and held at three off-campus sites, as the campus remains closed.

At Wesleyan University in Connecticut, the school says it will not disperse the student encampment on the main lawn, so it may still be up during graduation at the end of May. At Harvard University, students are camped on Harvard Yard, but not in a place that would interfere with commencement later this month. Still, in a message to the school community on Monday, Interim President Alan Garber said students who continue to participate in the encampment "will be referred for involuntary leave."

At other colleges, administrators have negotiated agreements with protesting students. Protestors at Brown University recently agreed to clear their encampment in exchange for a divestment vote later this fall by the school's governing board.

NYC says half of those arrested at 2 pro-Palestinian campus protests were not students

Brown sophomore Daniel Solomon sits on the school's Student Organizing Committee on Antisemitism, and was involved in the negotiations.

"A big part of the discussion was not interrupting commencement and reunion weekend and to have a peaceful reading period, to have a peaceful finals period," he explains.

Other students have different priorities. NPR spoke with students who were part of the protests at UCLA and Columbia, two schools that saw confrontations between students as well as with police . Many didn't want to be named because they were concerned about doxxing, but they said they felt that raising awareness about what's happening in Gaza is more important than commencement ceremonies.

Not every campus is steeped in turmoil

Other campuses have seen little to no disruption from protests. At some of these schools, classes have wrapped for the year and students' minds are elsewhere. Charles Burns, a fourth year student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, described a scene from his last ever undergraduate class:

"My professor asked us, 'OK, if any of you guys were at, say, Columbia or Brown or any of these campuses, how many of you would be participating in an encampment?' And... this is like a huge class – like 150 to 200 kids – maybe like 1 or 2 raise their hands."

Over the weekend, the University of Virginia's small encampment did get broken up by police and several people were arrested. Since then things have been quiet, and Burns is hoping they stay that way. As with Johnson at USC, this will be his first official graduation. In 2020, because of the pandemic, he had a drive-through high school commencement.

He's excited to get the full experience this year, and to have his grandparents make the trip from Kansas City to Charlottesville.

"Any kind of disruption to my college graduation... that would be a huge bummer. So I can only hope it doesn't happen. We'll see."

Jerry Seinfeld knows his way around handling awkward moments onstage. Even so, the initial reception he faced at Duke University’s commencement on Sunday reflected a more complicated audience than usual.

As Mr. Seinfeld, who has recently been vocal about his support for Israel, received an honorary degree, dozens of students walked out and chanted, “Free, free Palestine,” while the comedian looked on and smiled tensely.

Many in the crowd jeered the protesters. Minutes later, as the last of the protesters were filing out, he approached the mic. His first words were: “Thank you. Oh my God, what a beautiful day.”

In his commencement speech, Mr. Seinfeld was mostly cautious, opting for a tight comedic script interspersed with life advice instead of a full-on response to the protests against his presence.

Still, in one part of his speech, he defended various types of privilege and appeared to hint at the elephant in the room.

“I grew up a Jewish boy from New York,” he said to applause from the crowd. “That is a privilege if you want to be a comedian.”

Outside Duke’s stadium, graduates walked around campus, chanting: “Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest.” When they arrived at a green space, they were joined by hundreds of other people — including faculty, relatives and other protesters — who organized a makeshift graduation for them.

As they prepared to throw their caps in the air, Mr. Seinfeld continued his speech inside Wallace Wade Stadium, telling students that while he admired their generation’s commitment to inclusivity and not hurting other people’s feelings, “it is worth the sacrifice of occasional discomfort to have some laughs.”

Mr. Seinfeld, who has two children who have attended Duke, has been uncharacteristically vocal about his support for Jews in Israel while doing press in recent weeks for his latest film, “Unfrosted,” which chronicles the invention of Pop-Tarts .

Typically an apolitical comedian who prefers punchy takes on ordinary observations, Mr. Seinfeld is now engaging in the type of celebrity activism that few associate with him, and that has drawn criticism and praise. Since the attacks of Oct. 7 in Israel, he has signed a letter in support of the country and posted an earnest message on social media about his devotion to it.

His wife, Jessica Seinfeld, a cookbook author, recently promoted on Instagram a counterprotest at the University of California, Los Angeles, that she said she had helped bankroll. (She condemned the violence that occurred at a later counterprotest.)

In December, Mr. Seinfeld traveled to Tel Aviv to meet with the families of hostages, soberly recounting afterward the missile attack that occurred during the trip.

Still, his comments on the issues have been somewhat modest.

“I don’t preach about it,” he told GQ last month. “I have my personal feelings about it that I discuss privately. It’s not part of what I can do comedically, but my feelings are very strong.”

On Sunday, Mr. Seinfeld played to the crowd, telling students: “You’re never going to believe this: Harvard used to be a great place to go to school. Now it’s Duke.”

Not everyone at Duke, however, was laughing at Mr. Seinfeld’s jokes.

The Rev. Dr. Stefan Weathers Sr., an ordained minister in the American Baptist Church who was awarded a Ph.D. in divinity, had written a letter before the ceremony to the university asking that the comedian be replaced, citing Mr. Seinfeld’s ongoing and strong support for Israel.

Shreya Joshi, a graduate and one of the organizers of the protest, said that after Duke selected Mr. Seinfeld as the speaker, she and other seniors, faculty members and pro-Palestinian supporters began organizing the walkout and an alternate graduation.

Ms. Joshi, 21, who studied history at Duke and will be attending law school at the University of Chicago, said that it was painful to have lost out on a high school graduation ceremony in 2020 because of the pandemic, and the seniors still wanted one this year, even if it meant creating one outside of the university’s official channels.

And that pain, she added, paled in comparison to what people in Gaza are experiencing.

“The fact that we were going to sit here and celebrate our own?” Ms. Joshi said. “It felt trivial in the face of all that. Have you seen the tiny violin? That’s how it felt.”

Ms. Joshi said that they had tried to leave the main commencement ceremony in the least disruptive way possible. They chose to leave as the honorary degree was being given to Mr. Seinfeld because “none of us particularly wanted to listen to Seinfeld.”
