Text description provided by the architects. When commissioned to design the Bank of China Tower on an intricate inland site, I.M. Pei was requested to create an unavoidably tall unique headquarters in a typhoon-prone region that would represent the aspirations of the Chinese people yet also symbolize good will toward the British Colony. 

The solution assimilates architecture and engineering simultaneously, involving an asymmetrical tower that informs both skyline and street. The Bank of China Tower stands 70 stories tall, reaching a height of 1,209 feet. At the time of its opening in May 1990, it was the tallest building in Asia and still remains one of the tallest in Hong Kong.

Comprised of four vertical shafts, the tower emerges from a 52-meter cube and reduces its mass, quadrant by quadrant, until a single triangular prism resides. The faceted prism is clad in reflective glass that mirrors the changing sky, anchoring the expansive business district and providing a characteristic vertical axis to Hong Kong's towering skyline.

The four shafts that from the building produce a modern composite structural system that not only resists high-velocity winds, but eliminates the need for many internal vertical supports. As a result, the Bank of China uses less steel than typical for a building its size.

A key issue for I.M. Pei was the symbolism of the structure for the Chinese people and the British Colony. Original plans included an x-shaped cross-brace. However, in China the "X" shape is seen as a symbol of death. As an alternative, Pei chose to use less menacing diamond forms.

The bamboo plant was also a significant inspiration for this unique building. The trunk of this massive structure is representative of the growth patterns of bamboo, the symbol of hope and revitalization in the Chinese culture.

At ground level, the tower is pulled back from the street to create an amicable pedestrian atmosphere that is fully accessible and sheltered from the urban bedlam. It is surrounded by a broad promenade, and flanked by cooling water gardens that muffle the activity and noise of surrounding traffic.

China's property crisis is bleeding into its banking sector, which is being asked to prop up developers

• China's property crisis has impacted the country's biggest banks, increasing non-performing loans.
• Beijing is urging banks to boost financing for "white list" property developers to help the sector.
• Despite the crisis, Chinese banks say they have sufficient buffers to manage risks.

China's property crisis has hit the books of its biggest lenders, which are reporting an uptick in non-performing loans.

Non-performing loans at China's big four banks — Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Agricultural Bank of China — jumped 10.4% in 2023, from 1.117 trillion Chinese yuan, about $155 billion, in 2022 to 1.23 trillion yuan.

This is according to a Nikkei analysis based on the companies' earnings, which were released this week.

The banks were all profitable last year, but their margins are being increasingly pressured by the fallout from China's real-estate debt crisis.

Even so, Beijing is urging banks to boost financing for property developers featured on a "white list" of companies.

China's real-estate sector has been mired in crisis since the second half of 2021, when a liquidity crunch at Evergrande — once China's second-largest developer — came to light.

Evergrande is now in liquidation, while other Chinese real-estate developers have run into similar issues and have begun defaulting on their bond payments, spurring fears the crisis could spill over into other sectors of the economy, and globally.

Despite the rise in bad loans, Chinese lenders said they had enough buffers to weather the storm and will control lending risks to property developers, per Nikkei.

Case Study 8.2: Insufficient Accommodations

Written by Paul C. Gorski ( [email protected] ) and Seema Pothini ( [email protected] ) for their book, Case Studies on Diversity and Social Justice Education (Routledge, 2014). Synopsis: A sixth grade teacher takes her class to a nature reserve for a science-based hike, believing the reserve has accommodations for her new student, who uses crutches due to cerebral palsy. When the class arrives they learn that the reserve’s accommodations are underwhelming.

Points for Consideration

• This case points, among other things, to the tension between equality and equity. All students are

invited on the same field trip, which would constitute a sort of equality. But once on the field trip not all students have the same access to learning opportunities, which is an obvious inequity. The best “accommodations” should provide equitable experiences rather than equal experiences. Consider how this tension manifests in other educational scenarios.

• Making choices for equity can be a difficult task. There often is a lot to consider, including what Sonia Nieto has called the “sociopolitical context of schooling.” It might be tempting to look at this one event and think, “It’s just one field trip so it’s no big deal if Justin is separated from the class so everybody else can experience the hike.” But if we step back and consider the situation more broadly, we begin to see that students like Justin often experience little slights, little fragments of inequity, that taken together could constitute a fairly exclusionary school experience. This is why it is important to consider these single events in their larger contexts.

• Ms. Thurston might feel compelled to address this issue with Justin and Ms. Parsons exclusively, but it is important to realize that it should be addressed with all of her students. By engaging them in a process of community building and problem solving, she would demonstrate that Justin is an integral part of the class community. Perhaps a future unit could encourage students to look at other ways inequity concerns come into play, perhaps by evaluating issues in their own communities.

• Although Ms. Thurston was mindful enough to call the park and inquire about accommodations, she

took for granted that Justin would have a learning experience that roughly paralleled that of his classmates when Ms. Parsons told her that accommodations were available. This reflects a sort of privilege that both Ms. Thurston and Ms. Parsons (as well as other people without mobility challenges) experience, but may not understand. Had Ms. Thurston asked for clarification about the available accommodations, she would not have been surprised upon arriving at the park. More importantly, she would have had more of an opportunity to make alternate, more equitable, plans for her students.

Myth-Buster

Self-described “myth buster by trade” Barbara Ehrenreich (b. 1941) has tackled many myths during her years as an activist and a writer, most often confronting widely held beliefs related to health and wealth.

Ehrenreich was born in 1941 in Butte, Montana, the daughter of a copper miner who finished college after she and her siblings were born. The family moved frequently when Ehrenreich was young and finally settled in Los Angeles. Ehrenreich attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and went to graduate school at Rockefeller University in New York City, where she earned a PhD in cell biology. Ehrenreich became involved in the women’s health movement in the 1970s and at that point decided to become a full-time writer. Her work life settled into three tracks: “journalism, . . . book-length projects on subjects, . . . [and] activism.” Over her long career, she has written for magazines and newspapers and has published more than 20 books, the most recent of which is Natural Causes: An Epidemic of Wellness, the Certainty of Dying, and Killing Ourselves to Live Longer (2018).

Ehrenreich is perhaps best known for Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America (2001), a first-person account of her three-month experiment trying to make ends meet on minimum wage. She went undercover, leaving her middle-class home behind, and moved around the United States from Florida to Maine to Minnesota. Ehrenreich worked as a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, nursing home aide, and Walmart salesperson. On the wages and tips she made at her various jobs, she attempted to find healthy food, health care, and affordable housing in trailer parks and residential hotels.

In Nickel and Dimed , Ehrenreich busts the myth that poor people have figured out how to live well on less money than middle-class people. No such “secret economies” exist, Ehrenreich writes. Instead, poor people pay “a host of special costs,” whether for renting a room by the week because they cannot save up two months’ rent to get an apartment, buying restaurant food because the weekly room doesn’t have a stove, or going to the emergency room for a toothache because they can’t afford to go to the dentist.

As a piece of writing, Nickel and Dimed falls into the genre of memoir. However, the book is also a report; Ehrenreich conducted extensive on-the-ground field research, recording the tasks she performed at her jobs, interactions with managers, and conversations with coworkers about their lives. She recorded her findings when she was not working. Although some readers have criticized Ehrenreich for not being honest about her background and education, most have praised the light she shines on the other side of American prosperity—the people who work hard but who never manage to get ahead. Her work as a “myth buster” to expose the hardships faced by poor working people in America illustrates the problem of accepting opinions as facts.
