About The Author
Mohammad Iqbal (1877-1938), a descendant of a Kashmiri Brahmin family that had embraced Islam in the seventeenth century, was born and settled in Sialkot. After a traditional education in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, he was exposed to a liberal education that defined the contours of his thought and his poetry during the entire period of his life. Beginning his educational career at the Scottish Mission School, he went on to acquire his M. A. in Philosophy, before joining Trinity College, and later earning the degree of Bar-at-Law. He furthered his education by getting the degree of doctorate from Germany on The Development of Metaphysics in Persia. He worked in different capacities at different points of time; he taught philosophy, practised law, got involved in politics, and also attended the second Round Table Conference. Even while he favoured the idea of the creation of Pakistan and is venerated there as the national poet, he wrote the famous patriotic song that celebrates the greatness of India. King George V decorated him with knighthood and he was called Sir Mohammad Iqbal thereafter. Iqbal wrote both in Persian and Urdu, and is often regarded as the poet-philosopher of the East who addressed the Muslim ummah, believed in the philosophy of wahdatul wujood, and propounded the philosohy of khudi, or selfhood, which called for self-realisation and the discovery of the hidden talent with love and perseverance. Beyond that lay the stages of complete submission and forgetfulness which, he thought, was the ultimate stage of khudi. Iqbal dreamt of the ‘complete man’ and also entered into a metaphoric dialogue with the divine. His poetry emerged as a remarkable site where message and art coalesced, as he re-configured major poetic devices like metaphor, myth, and symbol to re-visit history, philosophy and the Islamic faith to develop his individual vision. He has left behind his collections of poems, Asraar-e Khudi, Rumooz-e Bekhudi, Baang-e Daraa, Baal-e Jibreel, Payaam-e Mashriq, Zaboor-e ‘Ajm, Javed Naama, Zarb-e Kaleem, and Armaghaan-e Hijaz, apart from his lectures collected in English as The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam, and other works on the Eastern worldview.

Biden Compares Hamas Attack to Holocaust in Antisemitism Warning

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden warned on Tuesday that the threat of antisemitism is growing in the United States, including on college campuses, as his support for Israel's assault on Gaza divides Democrats and alienates some young voters.
In a speech honoring the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust, Biden joined a heated American debate about Jewish security, Zionism, free speech and support for Israel, in the country with the largest Jewish population after Israel.
Addressing a bipartisan audience at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's annual commemoration, he warned of the risk that the truth about the systematic killing of Jews during World War Two would be lost.
War in Israel and Gaza
"'Never again' simply translated for me means: Never forget. Never forgetting means we must keep telling the story, we must keep teaching the truth," Biden said at the U.S. Capitol's Emancipation Hall. "The truth is we're at risk of people not knowing the truth."
Biden spoke seven months to the day after the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 by Israeli tallies, in what he has called the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
"This hatred (of Jews) continues to lie deep in the hearts of too many people in the world and requires our continued vigilance and outspokenness," Biden said.
"Now here we are, not 75 years later, but just seven and a half months later, and people are already forgetting ... that Hamas unleashed this terror," he said. "I have not forgotten, nor have you. And we will not forget."
Biden's speech comes as Israel's retaliation has killed nearly 35,000 people in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, according to Gaza health authorities, left many of the area's 2.3 million people on the brink of starvation and sparked protests in the U.S. demanding that universities and Biden withdraw support for Israel.
Biden acknowledged Americans' right to protest and demonstrate, but didn't mention the Gaza deaths.
"We know scapegoating and demonizing any minority is a threat to every minority," Biden said. "There is no place on any campus in America for antisemitism, hate speech or threats of violence of any kind."
On Tuesday, Israeli forces seized the main border crossing between Egypt and southern Gaza, shutting down a vital aid route for Palestinian civilians as they prepared a possible offensive aimed at eliminating Hamas fighters.
Many Jewish Americans have been critical of Israel's Gaza attacks, leading protests against actions of right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and condemning Netanyahu in Congress.
Biden said his commitment to Israel was ironclad, even amid disagreements with the country's government. The U.S. government has been holding up several shipments of weapons to Israel, a source told Reuters on Tuesday.
ANTISEMITISM, HATE CRIMES JUMP
Law enforcement and advocacy groups report a sharp rise in antisemitic attacks in the U.S. since Oct. 7, as well as anti-Muslim attacks. Some Americans favor zero-tolerance policies defining antisemitism broadly, while others see the threat of attacks against Jews being used to limit legitimate criticism of U.S. support for Israel.
"Antisemitism is reaching crisis levels in our country," said Carol Ann Schwartz, national president of Hadassah, a women's Zionist organization that has been consulted by the White House.
Biden, who is in a tight race for the White House with Republican rival Donald Trump, pledged to unite the country.
He said he was inspired to run by then-President Trump's response to the 2017 Charlottesville, Virginia, white nationalist rally, where marchers chanted, "Jews will not replace us." Biden now governs a country no less divided than when he took office in 2021, most statistics show.
The FBI reported a 36% increase in anti-Jewish hate crime incidents between 2021 and 2022, the latest year for which data is available, as well as a jump in crimes against Black Americans and gay men.
CAMPUS PROTEST POLITICS
Trump has sought to exploit Democratic divisions over Israel's response and widening college protests to improve Republicans' lot with Jewish voters, who traditionally vote Democratic.
Police crackdowns on some campuses have given ammunition to Trump's claim that U.S. cities are under siege from violent crime, illegal migration and out-of-control leftist policies. Trump's Republican Party has argued that the protests are driven by antisemitism.
"Jewish Americans are realizing that the Democrat Party has turned into a full-blown anti-Israel, antisemitic, pro-terrorist cabal," said Karoline Leavitt, a Trump campaign spokesperson.
Biden has asked the Department of Education to provide colleges with examples of antisemitic discrimination that could lead to a federal civil rights investigation, and technology firms to determine the best ways to monitor antisemitism online.
About seven in 10 U.S. Jewish voters support Democrats, while three in 10 are Republican-aligned, according to the Pew Research Center.
Kenneth Stern, director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate, who helped craft a modern "working definition of antisemitism," said the word is being misused to stifle protected speech about Israel.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill last week that would apply the definition Stern helped develop to enforce federal anti-discrimination laws on college campuses. Stern opposes the bill.
"I don't think that you can combat hatred of any type effectively with weak democratic institutions," said Stern. "When we have a government that decides it's going to stop certain things from being said, that creates an opportunity for totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and that's never good for the Jews."

Security Council hears of progress in Bosnia despite ‘worrying’ trend of genocide denial
Facebook Twitter Print Email
Both positive and “worrying” developments have recently unfolded in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a top UN official told the Security Council on Tuesday at an emergency meeting requested by Russia.
Miroslav Jenča, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas with the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, provided an update of recent developments since his office’s last Council briefing in July.
The country continues to grapple with issues stemming from the brutal war that killed 100,000 people across the former-Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, including the Srebrenica genocide in which 8,000 men and boys died.
The war ended with the Dayton Peace Agreement in 1995 and the establishment of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia as separate UN Member States.
“There is consensus among the political leadership in Bosnia and Herzegovina that European integration is the best route for ensuring the country’s future stability and prosperity,” he said.
‘Unique chance’ to bridge divides
Mr. Jenča noted the decision of the European Council in March this year to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, based on the European Commission’s assessment of progress made by the country on key legislative and judiciary reforms.
“ The European project has become a unique chance for the continent to bridge divides and shape a stable and prosperous future despite ongoing challenges,” the Assistant Secretary-General explained.
He said that based on a united commitment towards a stable and peaceful future, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Council of Ministers in late 2022 had sought the UN’s support through its Peacebuilding Fund to contribute to strengthening social cohesion, respect for diversity, understanding and trust , especially among young men and women in different communities.
Initiatives supported by the Peacebuilding Fund have started to be implemented , Mr. Jenča said, noting that ongoing efforts are operating in close cooperation with authorities at all levels and communities across the country.
“These projects are focused on the implementation of the women, peace and security and the youth, peace and security agendas as well as community dialogue,” he said.
Hate speech, genocide denial
At the same time, in recent months, actions and statements have emerged that contradict these positive developments, he said, pointing to concerns raised by the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide.
He said the Special Advisor, who has undertaken official visits to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region over the past years, has noted concerns about repeated threats of secessionism, the promotion of hate speech, the denial of genocide and the glorification of war criminals that were convicted by local and international courts.
In addition, he said, the Special Adviser recently issued statements on the dangers of these trends and their long-lasting impact on peace and reconciliation in the country and had stressed the importance of addressing the legacy of the past, including of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Lasting peace is rooted in understanding the past
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice ( ICJ ) have established that acts of genocide against the Muslims of Bosnia and Herzegovina were committed in and around Srebrenica in July 1995, he said.
“ Only by promoting the understanding of the past through truthseeking and accountability and addressing the root causes and the continued impact of such violence on society, can sustainable peace be achieved ,” he said.
Noting that the Secretary-General has consistently called on everyone in the region and beyond to counter hate speech and the rhetoric of division and narratives of mistrust and fear, he reiterated the UN chief’s message that all communities, all leaders and all organisations, including the media, must make this pledge.
‘Remarkable’ efforts to promote reconciliation
“Many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina have for decades undertaken remarkable work to promote trust and reconciliation in the country,” he said.
However, he added, it is primarily the responsibility of authorities and institutions, at all levels, to help the whole of society constructively deal with the past , to demonstrate respect for all victims and survivors, and to work towards a prosperous and peaceful future for all of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s citizens.
Recalling that the UN is not a signatory to the Dayton Peace Agreement nor a member of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council, he said the Organization remains “committed to support Bosnia and Herzegovina in its path towards reconciliation, peacebuilding and sustainable development ”.
Also briefing the Council were Željka Cvijanović, of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Christian Schmidt, the UN High Representative for the country, whose office was established to oversee the implementation of civilian aspects of the Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the war.
