The industry is small enough for the word to get around when someone lie on their CV. Honesty will always get you further. Some crew agencies prefer Word files while others prefer PDFs, so save your CV in both formats. Avoid funky or even smart looking fonts. Using Arial or Times New Roman 12 with a simple layout is fine.

Yachting is a very different industry and employers are looking for different things than traditional land-based businesses. Your Resume is a Sales Tool

Even though people are applying for a job, they often forget or don't realize that the resume or CV is really a sales tool. The a to z of how to become a yacht steward/ess.

In the first half of my book, The Insiders’ Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess , I discuss the yachting industry and give you insight into what this world is all about. I also spend quite a few chapters discussing what both crew life, and the work, is like. I promise it’s a fun and fascinating read, and it will appeal to many people — even those just curious to learn more about this exclusive world of superyachts. I cover who owns them, who travels on them, how much they cost, what destinations they visit, and even what they’re like inside.

BUT, if you are eager and ready to become a part of the yachting industry, then Part II of my book is for you. In it, you will learn the step-by-step process for acquiring a yacht stew position, if not any entry-level position onboard a yacht, including deckhand, chef, and engineering positions. In the end, I think you’ll be shocked to discover just how straightforward it is to land one of these dream jobs. Training is key, professionalism is required, and before you’re convinced you should give it a go, please make sure you have the right intentions. While the benefits that accompany this job are plentiful, being a yacht crewmember requires a LOT of hard work .

While I recommend grabbing a copy of my book for the nitty-gritty details, I can quickly chart your course here. I am going to throw at you, in an “a, b, c” fashion, what I consider to be the main action steps to get you from where you sit now to your first stewardess position (or nearly any entry-level crew position) on a luxury yacht. The order of these steps might vary, but what I want you to glean from looking down the list is just how uncomplicated the process really is for how to become a yacht stewardess or steward .

And not to worry, if you buy the book , I expand upon every step throughout Chapters 6–11, along with delivering practical, insider advice on how to get hired in a short period of time. You will see which chapters contain that information below.

Use The Quick Start Guide as a checklist reference as you prepare to take your own leap into what I hope will be a well-lit path.

Are you ready? Here goes:

Assess your skills and determine whether or not this opportunity is for you. (Chapter 6)
Find storage for your major belongings and plan to pack up what you’ll need because you’re going away for a while! (Chapter 8)
Select the hiring port where you will conduct your job search, which you will determine based on convenience to your set of circumstances, as well as on the time of year. (Chapter 8)
If you do not already have a passport, apply now! (Chapter 8)
If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you need to apply for a B1/B2 visa before leaving your home country. (Chapter 8)
Prepare a preliminary résumé/CV highlighting your applicable skills and work experience, along with your special abilities, talents, and interests. (Note: I’ll explain what a CV is in Chapter 10.) A cover letter is optional, but it is a nice touch. And make sure your social media profiles project you as a reliable person to hire. (Chapters 6 and 10)
Compile a list of preliminary work references to include with your résumé/CV submissions. (Chapter 10)
Have a headshot photo taken of yourself (or use an existing one) to include with your résumé/CV submissions. (Chapter 10)
Research the yacht-crew training schools in your chosen hiring port, and find out their respective STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) Course schedules ahead of time. You should plan to arrive in town when courses are being offered and can accommodate you. The same holds true with any optional preparatory classes you plan on taking, such as a specialized stew training course. (Chapter 7)
Research yacht-crew housing options in your chosen hiring port, and call ahead to check availability for the date you plan to arrive. Consider booking your initial accommodations once you’ve determined your STCW Basic Safety Training course dates and made your travel arrangements. (Chapter 8)
Send preliminary e-mails to the yacht-crew recruitment agencies that you hope to register with before you make your move. Simply introduce yourself, let them know you will be coming in to meet them soon, and tell them your planned arrival date. Consider sending along your résumé/CV in advance, with expected course-completion dates listed. If possible, go ahead and schedule your personal interview. (Chapters 9 and 10)
Book that airplane ticket, and move to a hiring port. (Chapter 8)
Once you are physically in a hiring port, go meet with the agencies. I recommend registering with a minimum of two crew recruitment agencies to get started. The crew agents will want to interview you when you arrive, so dress the part, and be ready to sell yourself as a serious job candidate. If you haven’t already e-mailed it in advance, hand them your résumé/CV and get their feedback. Make any necessary updates or adjustments that the crew agents suggest. (Chapters 9 and 10)
If you have not already done so, enroll in, take, and complete a five-day STCW Basic Safety Training Course from an accredited training school. (Chapter 7)
Let the crew recruitment agencies know when you’ve completed your STCW training, and update your résumé/CV accordingly. (Chapter 10)
Consider enrolling in a specialized steward/ess training course (highly recommended!) to increase your chances of getting hired fast. Completing this training really can be the deciding factor on whether or not you are offered a position as an entry-level stew. (Chapter 7)
Look for day work at local marinas and shipyards in your hiring port. Going boat to boat letting captains and current crew know you are available for work could even lead to a full-time position. This is referred to in the industry as “dockwalking.” Much more on this later. (Chapter 9)
Seek out alternative job-finding methods such as classified “crew wanted” ads in the yachting newspapers and trade publications as well as on their websites, public bulletin boards in well-known yachting establishments, and by networking with people in your crew house and at local yachtie hot spots, such as bars and restaurants. Not to worry, I’ll supply that list, too. (Chapter 9)
Update your résumé/CV and referral list with all the new training and day-work experiences you accumulate. This includes acquiring and passing along to the crew agents reference letters from captains or supervisors from any yacht that hires you to do day work for a period of three or more days. (Chapters 9 and 10)
Keep checking in with the crew agencies as often as possible (which you can do online via their websites and/or their social-media presences), to remind them of your availability and update them on your own efforts to find a job. (Chapter 9)
NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK! (Chapters 7–10)
Take advantage of all interview opportunities that initially come through from the agencies or by other means listed above. (Chapter 10)
It may not be the case for everyone, but if you’re able to interview with several yachts before accepting a position, be selective! (Chapter 10)
Think overnight before accepting a position. If you are not interested, let the hiring party know as quickly as possible.
Accept your first job, and get ready for an extraordinary, life-altering experience! (Chapters 10 and 11)

Three Tips on How to Create a Great Superyacht CV

A mediocre superyacht CV not only ruins job opportunities, but might result in crew agencies turning you away because your document doesn’t meet yachting standards. Here are my three top superyacht CV writing tips to create a CV that will maximise your chances of being offered a job interview or being represented by a proactive crew placement agent.

1. Highlight your unique strengths on your CV

Crew agents and superyacht leaders often receive hundreds of applications for the one role and quickly scan CVs, making quick decisions about who to offer an interview.

Therefore, you want to highlight your unique strengths and distinguish yourself from other candidates. A couple of the top areas you should be focusing on in your CV are:

Your work experience – Flesh out your experience, don’t be generic!
Profile – Make it concise and highlight why we should choose you over anyone else.

2. Choose a format that showcases your skills and experience

A common mistake that job seekers make is thinking that aesthetics is better than content!

F or example, you might:

Choose intricate templates on Canva which allow no room to describe your skill set
Only list work positions rather than highlighting your skill set and experience and linking it back to your role
Select the wrong layout or format. When recruiters pick up a candidate’s CV, they don’t want to spend extra time scanning for information, they want to grasp it at a glance.

The CV should ideally be in a standardised format to enhance the experience of reviewing your CV. It must be both stylishly designed and accessible to showcase your skills and experience.

On that note, I wanted to share a few other key takeaways. Therefore, please follow this checklist to help find a legitimate yacht CV writing service .

Will I have an editable CV template at the end of the process? A number of CV writing services only provide you with an non-editable PDF. This puts you into a position of having to engage the editing service again for a fee even for a minor change.
Does the service have testimonials from satisfied clients? Good testimonials are important, and results are even better! Did their clients land jobs from their CVs?
Will the service highlight my points of difference on my CV? If it’s a CV writing service, it’s key that they emphasise your unique strengths, not produce generic copy.

How to build a yachtie CV!

I have been promising to do this blog post for what feels like years now.

I have been putting it off because I wanted to make sure I could dedicate enough time to answer the most frequently asked questions & eloquently put into words just how important it is to format your CV correctly.

Last May, I started looking to fill a Junior Stewardess position I had onboard. Using my social media & various Facebook groups, I shared that I was more than happy to take green candidates. I’ve said it before that I don’t feel as though enough Chief Stews hire green stews. While many Captains won’t allow it, I had the freedom to pick my team & I wouldn’t let this opportunity go to waste. Within 24 hours, I had over 400 CV’S!!! To ensure the hiring process was as fair as possible, I went through & reviewed every single CV, reference letter & email. I sat in my office until 10 pm for three days in a row; I just found it so interesting to see various layouts, photographs, introductions, etc. It was very apparent who had put time into their CV & who had just thrown it together. I’m sure it isn’t surprising that I only shortlisted candidates who had put considerable amounts of effort into their CVs.

So, I am here to help!

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from Stewardesses regarding CVs and my answers! Please keep in mind that this is just based on my opinion.

What basics should I follow?

I follow five rules:

CV’s should be no longer than two pages
Keep font size between 10-12
Don’t have significant gaps – if your CV is only 1 page, that’s fine!
Save it as a .doc if you are using a Mac & always send your CV as a PDF to boats & .doc to crew, agents,
When saving your CV, ensure it is listed, for example, Anna Clarke CV.

The general order I follow is:

Personal Info & Photograph
Qualifications

What personal information should I put in my CV?

I list my info on the top left corner with a photograph on the top right side. I list the following:

First & Last Name (This is the header – so make it a larger font)
Position Wanted (This is the sub-header, write Stewardess, Stewardess/Masseuse, etc.)
Telephone Number
Email Address
Date of Birth
Nationality & visas held *Include expiry dates for your passport(s) & visas
Current Location *BE HONEST If you are shortlisted because you say you’re in Antibes when you are actually in Cape Town – then you are already misleading the vessel
Health *I always write “Excellent, No Tattoos, Non-Smoker.”

When you are a Greenie with no experience, what should you put on your CV?

Below the personal details are the Objective Paragraph. This is your time to shine! Share how your previous experiences have set you up to take on this new challenge. Have you worked in a bar? Share that your boutique bar experience has provided you with excellent bespoke cocktail knowledge. Write out what you are looking for in an Interior Team , for example: “I am looking forward to joining a dynamic Interior team with a heavy focus on training & teamwork.” It is ALL about wording & being confident in your experience.

Next, list all of your previous jobs in chronological order. Yachting-related positions, including daywork, come first & then move onto land experience. Write a least 2-3 FULL sentences about each position you held. Go into depth about all hospitality ( service, food & beverage, housekeeping, laundry & floristry ), organisation, administration skills that you have learned whilst on the job.

When sharing about your yachting experience, write out the following:

Date’s Onboard (left side of the page), Name of Vessel (centre of page), Position Held (right side of the page) Paragraph about the position

For example: Oct 2019 – 2020, M/Y Lilly, Chief Stewardess I joined M/Y Lilly during a very busy shipyard season…

What should I leave off of my CV?

Any info relating to High School, as it makes you come across as very young
There is no need to list the negative reasons why you have left previous positions; keep it POSITIVE
Don’t write anything regarding salary, enquire about this during the Interview

I only have 1 season’s experience; what should I be sharing about that vessel?

I have seen Stewardess with 1 season experience Far too often only write a few words about their time onboard; this is NOT acceptable. Here are a few questions to consider when typing out your experience:

How many guest cabins were you responsible for?
Did you assist with provisioning?
What type of service did you do onboard? Silver service, plated, buffet, etc.
Was it strict or a family atmosphere with the guests?
Did you perform a solo drinks service at night?
Are you comfortable detailing a cabin by yourself?
What was your highlight while onboard?

For my CV photo, should I wear a Polo or Shirt?

The all-important photo is a topic that will probably be debated until the end of time! However, my personal preference is as follows:

White fitted polo shirt
Crop the image, chest it
Have your hair neatly pulled back. It HAS to look tidy
Professional and classy makeup *Less is more & don’t overdo it
Smile!! I want to see your smiley face!
DO NOT TAKE A SELFIE

Keep in mind that often CV’s have to be sent to Management, Owners or the Owners Representative before the interview. Therefore, ensure that your photograph is professional-looking.

Are cover letters needed?

In my experience, I have never needed to send a cover letter. I use my introduction email as a cover letter instead and then allow my CV to speak for itself. As a Chief Stew, I seldom look at Cover Letters – my focus is on your experience and the professionalism of your CV.
