What is a Homework Diary?

  • Teaching Strategies, Tactics, and Methods

whats a homework diary

A homework diary is essential for students to remind them of their responsibilities and tasks they must complete in the evening. They also allow parents to get involved with their child’s studies and be aware of what is required.

What to write in a Homework Diary?

It may seem obvious to write the homework task in a homework diary, but there are also other important factors to include, such as:

  • Details of the homework task
  • When the homework is due
  • Parent and teacher signature

Details of the Homework Task

It may not be helpful for students to write down ‘English Homework’ as they may forget what they may have been asked to read or study. Instead, they should write down ‘read chapter 1 of (name of the book)’ or ‘write a paragraph or summary on the chapter of (name of the book).’ Being more specific about the assignment will make it easier for them when they get down to completing it.

As students get older, their homework will become more difficult and include more detail. Therefore, teachers should ensure that students have written everything they need; for example, if the task was to ‘read the handout,’ questions like: which handout? What is the handout about? Are there any questions about it? Doing this will ensure that students become self-sufficient and can do it next time without being reminded.

When the Homework is Due

Students need to note when the homework is due so they can time-manage themselves and not get into trouble for forgetting and falling behind.

Most of the time, homework tasks are set for the next day, which is simple to remember; however, if students are selected for bigger projects that take a few weeks to complete, parents can help children set mini-deadlines to focus on certain aspects of the task.

Parent and Teacher Signature

Including both a parent and teacher signature box in a homework diary means that parents can feel confident that their child has written the correct amount of detail of the homework task if their teacher has signed it. Vice versa, if a student’s parent has signed the homework diary, the teacher knows they have completed the noted assignments.

A diary is a great way for students to keep track of their thoughts and progress throughout the school year.

It can also be a helpful tool for reflection and goal setting.

In this blog post, we will discuss how to use a diary for students, and provide some tips and tricks on how to get the most out of this valuable resource!

Why Should Students Use a Diary?

1. set goals and track progress, 2. prioritise tasks, 3. reflect and track progress, 4. record ideas, 5. make it colourful, 2022 – 2023 academic diaries, 2022 – 2023 printable academic planners.

Students often find that their workload can be overwhelming. Between classes, homework, and extracurricular activities, it can be difficult to keep track of everything that needs to be done. What starts as a couple of assignments can quickly snowball into a mountain of homework and exams. At this point, it can be difficult to even know where to start. One way to improve productivity and stay organized is to keep a diary.

Why Should Students Use a Diary?

Many students find that keeping a diary is an effective way to boost their productivity. By writing down their thoughts and plans, they are able to organise their ideas and better focus on their work. In addition, a diary can be used to track progress on homework and assignments.

Students can use their diary to set goals and deadlines, and then refer back to it later to see how they are progressing. By taking the time to plan out each day, students can ensure that they are using their time effectively and avoid last-minute rush.

An academic diary allows students to:

  • Plan Out Their Day
  • Schedule Time For Homework And Assignments
  • Keep Track Of Any Deadlines
  • Review Entries At The End Of Each Week To Identify Areas For Improvement
  • Improve Their Productivity
  • Gain A Greater Understanding Of Their Own Learning Habits

How to Use a Diary for Students

There are many ways a diary can be useful for students. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular reasons students choose to keep a diary:

Many people find that setting goals for each day helps them to stay on track and be more productive. However, trying to accomplish too much in a day can be overwhelming and lead to a feeling of failure. It’s important to set realistic goals for each day, and keeping a diary can help you track your progress.

Make sure to schedule time for both work and fun activities.

For work goals, try to break them down into smaller tasks so that you can cross items off your list throughout the day. And don’t forget to schedule some time for yourself! Whether it’s reading, taking a walk, or spending time with friends and family, it’s important to relax and recharge.

By setting realistic goals and tracking your progress, you can help ensure that each day is both productive and enjoyable.

For students, managing time effectively can be a challenge. There are always more things to do than there is time to do them, and it can be difficult to know where to start.

One way to make the most of limited time is to sort tasks by importance and urgency. This means identifying which tasks are the most important and need to be done right away, and which can be put off for a later date. Urgent tasks are those that have a close deadline, while important tasks are those that contribute to your long-term goals.

By sorting your tasks in this way, you can ensure that you’re always working on the most important things first. This can be a difficult habit to form, but it’s well worth the effort. Not only will you be more likely to achieve your goals , but you’ll also have more free time in the long run.

Review progress regularly to identify weak areas and make necessary adjustments.

One way to do this is by keeping a homework planner to track what assignments are due when, and whether they have been completed on time. This will help you to see at a glance where you might need to focus more effort.

Students are always striving to improve grades and academic performance. However, it is not always easy to identify which areas to work on. That is why it is important to review your progress regularly.

If you see that you are struggling in a particular area, you can make the necessary adjustments to your study habits. For example, you may need to spend more time on revision or practice problems.

Another useful strategy is to schedule regular check-ins with your teacher. This provides an opportunity to discuss how you are progressing and identify any areas where you may need additional support. By taking proactive steps to monitor your progress, you can ensure that you stay on track and make the most of your learning opportunities.

Many students find it helpful to keep a diary for capturing ideas and fleeting thoughts. This can be especially useful when working on essays or other writing projects. By keeping a record of your thoughts, you can quickly refer back to them later and ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

Additionally, students often find that writing in a diary can help to clear their mind and make them feel more creative. So if you’re struggling to get started on your next essay, why not try keeping a diary? You might just find that it helps you to capture those elusive ideas.

Students are often required to keep a diary as part of their homework. While this may seem like a pointless exercise, it can actually be quite useful. Diaries provide us with a way to capture our fleeting thoughts and ideas before they disappear into the ether. By writing down our thoughts and observations, we can later refer back to them and gain a deeper understanding of our own thought processes.

In addition, diaries can be used as a tool for reflection, helping us to see how we have grown and changed over time. So next time you’re asked to keep a diary, don’t just see it as another piece of homework – see it as an opportunity to learn more about yourself.

One way to help you stay on top of everything is to decorate your diary with doodles and stickers. Making each page colourful and unique can help you stay organised and make you more likely to remember the tasks on each page. Of course, everyone is different, so find what works for you and stick with it.

Using different colours for different classes or lessons can help you keep track of what needs to be done when. Whether it’s doodles or stickers or something else entirely, make sure your diary is a place that you enjoy looking at – that way, you’ll be more likely to actually use it!

In conclusion, keeping a diary is an excellent way for students to monitor their progress and stay on track. By using a homework planner, students can identify weak areas and make necessary adjustments. Additionally, capturing fleeting thoughts and ideas in a diary can be helpful for later reference. Finally, making the diary colourful and enjoyable to look at can encourage use. whats a homework diary

What is a homework diary, and how can it benefit my pupils?

As the UK’s top supplier of school exercise books , supplementary reading materials , personalised school books , and homework diaries ; and here at EPSL , we know that homework diaries are by far one of the most useful organisational tools that your pupils can own. They’re the perfect way of tracking out-of-school learning, and provide a clear line of communication between teachers and parents. So, what exactly is a homework diary?

What is a homework diary, and how can it benefit my pupils?

A quick definition

Simply put, homework diaries are an organisational tool that allow teachers, students, and parents to keep track of home learning tasks. Our ‘My School Homework Diary’ has a timetable and space for recording homework, important dates and making notes. The diary also includes a list of multiplication tables, as well as room for each child to record their favourite books, CDs and films as a fun addition. Homework diaries are your pupil’s best friends from an organisational point of view.

How do homework diaries help pupils?

Homework diaries are essential pieces of equipment for pupils all the way from primary school age until sixth form or college. They provide students with a range of benefits, including:

  • Development of organisational skills - a homework diary instils a sense of responsibility in pupils, as it gives them the opportunity to take control of their own home learning tasks. As they progress through the school years, they’ll be set with more homework, which will eventually turn into revision for exams. So, getting your pupils into the habit of keeping track of their home learning from an early age prepares them for exam life as they move through their education.
  • Reduces stress - the primary aim of a homework diary is to help your pupils keep track of their home learning tasks, it’s also the ideal tool for helping students plan their time so they know when they can relax and unwind. If you give your students deadlines for completing certain tasks, then your pupils will be able to plan their time accordingly, and reduce their stress levels.

Where can I purchase a homework diary?

Right here of course! We can’t stress enough how important it is to get pupils used to recording their home learning in a diary from an early age - it’s an unbelievably valuable skill that will help them massively in the future when it comes to revising for exams, studying in university, and generally taking responsibility for their own time management!

It all starts with your influence in the classroom, and while you’re busy encouraging your students to make full use of their homework diaries, we’ll continue to produce our huge range of school exercise books, personalised exercise books, and supplementary reading material to students of all ages so they have everything they need to achieve greatness in the classroom. Take a look through what we’ve got available on our site - and if you have any questions, feel free to give us a call on 01254 686 500. We’re always happy to help!

How To Make A School Planner: Essential Guide

Organising and streamlining the academic year can be a daunting task, especially when you’re trying to ensure that every detail is captured. Whether you’re diving into the world of school planners for the first time or looking to enhance the utility of your current one, understanding how to make a school planner is crucial. From setting broad objectives like homework recording and curriculum support to deciding on the frequency of reporting systems, every detail matters. If you’re keen to make a school planner that truly resonates with your school community’s needs, this post will guide you through the intricate process of gathering ideas, determining content, and collaborating with The School Planner Company to bring your vision to life.

Make a school planner

Getting Your Ideas Together

If you are ordering planners for the first time, or want to understand how to make a school planner even more valuable here is our essential guide on how to make a school planner.

  • Identify the broad objectives for the planner (e.g. homework recording, progress, assessment, rewards and praise, AfL, curriculum support, discipline, etc.).
  • List what needs to be covered in each area.
  • Get together the information needed to support each area (policy documents, current planners, handouts, meeting notes, etc.).
  • Decide how often any reporting systems are done, e.g. termly, weekly, daily or in each lesson. This will help you to decide whether to include daily or weekly reporting in the weekly homework pages.
  • Create a running order for the sections or individual pages.
  • The School Planner Company designers will take your ideas and create your planner for you.

Planner Page Ideas

When you decide to make a school planner tailored to your institution’s unique needs, the possibilities are vast. There’s no limit (or minimum) to the number of pages you can incorporate into your planner(s) with our services. We’re committed to designing and printing the exact number of pages required to ensure your planner functions optimally, without any constraints of a fixed format or page count. Whether you’re considering pages from existing publications (always being mindful of copyright and intellectual property rights) or class worksheets, just send us a copy. Any necessary amendments can be annotated, and we’ll redesign them to align seamlessly with your new planner’s layout.

To expedite the process consider leveraging our extensive, well-researched library of planner page ideas to help you make a school planner. These pages can be included as they are or can serve as inspiration, allowing us to modify the content to meet your specific requirements.

For those who have a distinct vision, crafting your own page from scratch is also an option. Whether you sketch your ideas, design them on a computer, or assemble sections from various resources, we’re here to refine and finalise the design.

Furthermore, any digital designs, layouts, text, or graphics you’ve created can be sent to us electronically. For peace of mind, always retain a backup of all files shared with us. Making a school planner has never been more flexible and tailored to your needs.

Page Specification

When you make a school planner with us, you have complete control over the aesthetics of your text pages. Standardly, they will be printed in black ink, but you have the option to choose the paper color, whether it be classic white or a selection of vibrant colored paper. If you’re looking to make a more visually impactful planner, we also offer full-color printing on white paper. While this option comes at a slightly higher cost, it can significantly enhance the overall appeal and effectiveness of your planner. Making a school planner that resonates with your school community’s needs and preferences has never been easier.

Full-Colour Print Throughout

If you wish to have large sections, or even the whole planner, printed in full colour then we recommend you call our team of advisors on 01480 410432 to plan the most cost-effective way forward

Page One (Student Details)

Most designs use the first page of the planner to capture essential personal details.

The following list is a useful starting point for what you may wish to record. All the items in the list are commonly used, but you must consider what personal information your school community requires and is comfortable with being recorded in a planner.

  • School address
  • School contact numbers
  • School website / email
  • Tutor Absence line
  • House Locker number
  • Address Exam centre number
  • Telephone numbers
  • Candidate number
  • Emergency contact name
  • Emergency contact number
  • Important medical information

Homework recording pages inside a custom school planner

Homework Recording Pages

The homework diary section forms the core of your planner . It is important to consider the functions you want this section to perform in order to select the most effective style of homework recording pages for your students.

You may decide you wish students to record their homework by subject, have space for tutor comments and target setting each week, use different languages throughout, or date each day.

We can create a homework diary tailored to your exact requirements.  Customised homework diaries are most cost-effective when printed in black ink onto white or coloured paper, though they can be printed in coloured ink at an additional cost.

Do you need the homework diary section to:

  • Allow students to record homework by day, or by subject area?
  • Show several languages?
  • Encourage students to monitor and record their own attendance?
  • Provide a forum for feedback and communication between parents / carers and schools?
  • Record merits and achievements each week?
  • Allow tutors and parents to monitor homework and provide comments and guidance?
  • Include dates or week numbers to help students learn to plan?
  • Show term dates only or include holiday weeks?
  • Include Saturdays or weekends?
  • Show Week 1 / 2, A / B, Gold / Blue, etc. for two-week timetables?

make a school planner that includes school policies

School Policies

A planner is an ideal way to inform students and parents of your school’s policies and procedures and ensures they are always to hand.

You could include pages which give students and parents details of important dates along with school rules and regulations. For example, you could include home-school agreements, codes of conduct, expectations, Internet and school network policies, ‘What to do if’ pages, bullying policies, marking criteria and homework policies.

For any pages which are to be signed by the headteacher or other senior staff, we recommend taking a scan of the signature to place on the page.

Including policies in the planner is helpful, as you can assert that all students then know what they are (some schools go as far as to have students sign up to them, rather like an employee signing up to the staff handbook).

Pages for Students and Parents

Including pages that help students organise their school life develops independent study skills. When a student uses a planner for their personal organisation, it becomes easier for the school to deliver other initiatives and can reduce costs. It can strengthen the home-school link, by involving parents as part of the process. If the planner is being used to record achievements or support Assessment for Learning, a child’s progress can be monitored.

Recording Progress

Whatever your mechanism for assessing pupil progress, the planner is ideal as a day-to-day journal, ILP and target setting record.

Students could be encouraged to retain their planners in order to demonstrate organisational and planning skills to employers. You could include pages which give information and record the outcomes of mentoring, action planning, target setting, careers guidance, work-related learning, citizenship and academic reviews.

Subject Support Pages

Many schools choose to include pages to support individual subjects, ensuring that students have access to key information (formulae, periodic tables, maps, etc.) both at home and in all lessons.

Either to support your literacy strategy or just to have a good source of reference available at all times, the inclusion of literacy pages in the planner is highly recommended. Popular pages include basic grammar and punctuation, spelling strategies, word lists and tips for both improving writing and checking work that has been done.

Multiple Editions

If you are producing more than one edition, you need to consider whether each one should have a different style of homework diary section. For example, Key Stage 4 (or high school) planners will always require a different design to Key Stage 3 (or middle school) if you choose to record homework by subject rather than by day (may also be true if you wish to record merits or commendations on the weekly pages). When looking at possible uses for the weekly pages, consider whether it would be better to record particular elements (e.g. merits, absences, etc.) on separate pages in a different section of the book so that patterns and trends can be more easily observed.

Examples of some school planner covers

Cover Design

The importance of a good cover should not be overlooked.  A cover can engage the students, making the planner approachable and attractive. The planner maybe seen in the wider community and can reflect the values of the school. You can incorporate your logo or crest into the cover design.

Ideas for Your Cover Design

Photographs can be a good feature in an effective and engaging cover design.

Images that work well include:

  • Prospectus-style shots that show students engaged in interesting work or a sport (particularly where the school has a specialist focus).
  • Shots of a building (or part of a building) that has interesting architecture or important meaning to the school community.
  • Aerial photos of the school site, possibly including part of the surrounding area.
  • Photos or scans of student artwork.

Simple, crisp designs can be equally effective. You could choose to reflect the image of the school in line with your prospectus or other literature, or use different colours for each year group or Key Stage.

Other Things to Consider

  • Name and form on the cover If you want students to write their name on the front cover, go for matt lamination. This still gives the cover good protection, but is grainy enough for a ball point pen to write on it. To keep the look clean and neat, you could opt simply to omit the student’s name from the front cover and to have personal details printed on page one of the planner.
  • Timetables Many students leave their planners permanently open at the timetable page, which makes the surrounding pages prone to damage. You could have the timetable printed on the outside back cover so that it is visible with the book closed. To keep the look clean, you could have the timetable printed on card as the last leaf before the back cover.
  • Whiteboard back cover If you use whiteboards, you could include one in the planner (it’s free to make the cover a whiteboard with The School Planner Company). To keep the planner looking neat, the whiteboard could go on the inside of the front or back cover.
  • Stop / Go covers To avoid the cost of additional stop/go cards, you could have the front cover predominantly red and the back predominantly green (or vice versa).
  • Key information You could also choose to have key information printed on the inside of the covers or on the back, for example, your classroom code, how to use the planner, values statement, essential equipment, etc.

How Long Does It Take to Make a School Planner?

When you’re eager to make a school planner tailored to your institution’s needs, understanding the timeline is essential. Our planner advisors are here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring your planner is both functional and reflective of your school’s ethos. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

Step 1 – How to Order:

  • Send us your calendar dates, along with any school policies and information you’d like to incorporate. For efficiency, consider sending your personalised page content digitally.
  • From our extensive library, select the pages you wish to include in your planner. Note any modifications you’d like, either by marking changes on a printed copy or emailing us with the reference code and desired alterations.
  • Request custom pages that align with your school’s reward, achievement, and other systems.

Step 2 – Design and Proofing:

  • Our seasoned designers will craft custom content for each student planner edition, ensuring it aligns with your vision.
  • Expect a proof and a confirmation of costs within 4–6 weeks.
  • Review the proof and mark any changes. Allow 4–6 weeks for this, especially if consulting with other staff members.

Step 3 – Print and Delivery:

  • Upon your approval, the printing process begins.
  • Anticipate the delivery of your planners to the school on or before your chosen date, typically within a 3–6 week window.

Embarking on the journey to make a school planner can be intricate, but with clear steps and timelines, the process becomes seamless.

The journey to make a school planner is a meticulous one, requiring careful consideration of every detail to ensure it serves its purpose effectively. Importance of school diary for students

A school diary has been an integral part of schools for ages. It serves as a source of information and mode of communication between school, teachers, students and parents. That is why every school provides a diary to its students. Furthermore, it is mandatory for all the students to carry it to school and to maintain it regularly.

A diary contains personal details of students like name, address, class, blood group and information of their parents. This information is useful for the school and it is even helpful in case of any emergency. Furthermore, a school diary also contains information related to the school’s curriculum, code of conduct, time table, rules & regulations, extra-curricular activities, staff details, school’s overview, etc. A diary also contains spaces to note down important information given by the school and most importantly, students write homework and teacher’s instructions in it. With so much information, a diary is surely important for the students.

Now, let’s have a look at the significance of a diary for students:

Helpful for everyone:

School diary is a very important part of a school. It is helpful for everyone including students, teachers and parents.

Contains staff details

It contains contact numbers of the office, school and teachers so that they can be contacted whenever required. In case of an emergency, parents can easily contact the school using the contact numbers provided in the diary.

Parents stay connected with school teachers

Parents can easily come to know all the activities of school, the progress of their wards, complaints against them, homework provided by teacher and such information through the diary. In the same way, teachers can also communicate with parents via diary notes.

Teachers can write notes in the diary related to an important issue that they wish to bring under the notice of the parents. School diary also contains column for teacher’s and parent’s signature. This helps teachers and parents to stay in contact.

Students learn to plan their studies accordingly

Students note down all the homework and importance instructions in the diary. They learn to fix their priorities according to the amount of work given. Furthermore, they also learn to maintain their diary regularly. In this way, they become organized.

Students and parents can know about the school

As diary contains all the information about the school’s curriculum, so students and parents can understand the school and its environment in a better way.

Record of academic information

Diary is also useful in noting down academic information like syllabus and date sheets of the exams. Every diary contains a time table, which allows students to pack their bag and plan their studies accordingly.

Students learn to be disciplined

A diary remark by the teacher addressing the parents is the biggest fear of a student. No student wants his/her diary to be filled with remarks and some negative notes. This makes them stay punctual and disciplined.

The aforementioned points show the significance of the diary in a school. At, MIT Vishwashanti Gurukul we give importance to a diary. Our students are encouraged to carry a diary to school and record all information as well as homework in it. Through this practice, our students become disciplined, punctual, aware, organized and academically-sound. So, send your students to MIT Vishwashanti Gurukul to develop them holistically.

Diaries are wonderful objects that allow you to discuss your emotions, record dreams or ideas, and reflect on daily life in a safe, private space. While there's no single, definitive way to write a diary, there are some basic tricks you can use to get the most out of your writing. If you aren't sure what to write about, using prompts like inspirational quotes can help get started on new entries.

Sample Diary Entries

whats a homework diary

Brainstorming Topics

Step 1 Write about the events of your day.

  • Feel free to veer off into any topic you want as you're writing about the day's events.
  • For example, you could write about the English exam you took at school that day. Are you feeling good about the exam? Do you wish you had studied more? Are you nervous to receive your grade?

Step 2 Contemplate your goals...

  • For example, you could write about short-term goals like studying for your algebra exam or hitting the gym for a cardio session.
  • Long-term goals would be stuff like choosing and applying to colleges or saving up money to buy a car.

Step 3 Jot down your...

  • For example, if you're feeling sad, you can write a diary entry about why you feel that way and any events that may have contributed.
  • You can add a line from the lyrics of a song you are often listening to in your entry to preserve the current mood.

Step 4 Write down inspirational quotes and what they mean to you.

  • For example, you might write down a quote like, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started," which came from Mark Twain. Write a diary entry about what this means to you and what things you need to get started on to achieve certain goals.

Step 5 Explore your favorite...

  • For example, if you love sports, write about why you love a certain sport, your favorite teams, and personal goals you have if you play any sports yourself.
  • If you love painting, you could write about your favorite painters, the painting styles that speak to you the most, recent paintings you've made, and ideas for future paintings.

Creating Personal Entries

Step 1 Write the date in the corner or on the first line.

  • If you like, you can also put the time, day of the week, and your location alongside the date.

Step 2 Begin each entry with a topic in mind.

  • Once you start writing, you're free to veer off into any subject you like! But having something in mind when you start the entry can help kickstart the writing process.

Step 3 Open with

  • For example, you might write something like, "I'm worried about volleyball tryouts this week. I've practiced a lot and I feel ready, but I'm so nervous I can hardly eat."

Step 5 Be honest...

  • For example, you might write, "I feel jealous of Shaun's new car. I'm happy for him, but it seems really unfair that his parents bought him a brand new car. I'm working every day after school just to save up for a used car."
  • If you're afraid someone will find and read your diary, there are things you can do to prevent this. Physical diaries with locks and password-protected digital diaries are two of the most popular ways to control privacy.
  • Many people have epiphanies about themselves and their relationships through honest diary writing. Be open to learning about yourself as you write.

Step 6 Don't worry too much about grammar and spelling.

  • For some people, it helps to take a few minutes at the beginning of each entry to simply free write.

Step 7 Use lots of details to preserve moments in time.

  • Detailed writing isn't for everyone, so don't feel like you have to write long, wordy sentences. If you find it easier to express your emotions in short bursts or even bullet points, feel free to do that.

Getting into a Routine

Step 1 Choose a specific time each day to write in your diary.

  • For example, you might choose to write in your diary every night right before bed.
  • Don't set an unrealistic schedule for yourself. If writing every day seems out of reach, plan on writing entry 3 times a week instead.

Step 2 Keep your writing sessions short in the beginning.

  • For example, you could write a few key bullet points in your diary when you're pressed for time.
  • Setting an intimidating schedule for yourself could be counterproductive. You want journaling to be an outlet, not a chore, so go easy on yourself.
  • Pick a time to write when you don't have other obligations or time constraints.

Step 3 Use illustrations if you prefer drawing to writing.

  • Quick drawings may also help you get down something that you want to remember but don't have time to write about.

Community Q&A

  • Writing a diary should be a cathartic experience and not a chore. Allow yourself to enjoy your writing! Thanks Helpful 4 Not Helpful 0

Tips from our Readers

  • Remember that your diary can be a fascinating time capsule of who you are and what you were thinking when you read through it in the future, so be yourself and don't try to tailor it to someone else.
  • For the most privacy, avoid writing your name in the diary. That said, writing your name can help someone return it to you if you ever lose it. Think carefully!
  • Feel free to give your diary a name other than "Diary," if it helps you approach it in a more friendly or intimate way.
  • Try writing in your diary in a secondary language to help you build up fluency in a low-stakes activity.

A diary compiled specially for learners allows the school to achieve specific objectives as full control over the content rests with the school principal.

These objectives are achieved by adding additional pages to accompany the daily section. These additional pages may include the General Information form, the school’s Vision and Mission statements, and any other information and forms required. Upon presentation, this diary immediately identifies the learner to the principal, and a quick glance at the content reveals the learner’s track record as well as parental involvement. This personal glimpse is not at hand when high tech devices and other media are used for the management of homework entries.

Set the standard and gain control over homework with a compulsory Eduline Learner Diary.

‘Humane’ Review: Caitlin Cronenberg’s First Feature Is a Searing Domestic Thriller About Crimes of the Not-So-Distant Future

In a society where state euthanasia has become the answer to climate change, four furious siblings have two hours to decide which one will die.

Humane

Popular on Variety

From this degraded-future premise, you might expect to see a movie full of swirling crowds of people in chaos. But “Humane” is about one family, and it’s set almost entirely inside a mansion — a veritable castle of a home, built out of 18th-century brick, with a turret and a five-story tower. It looks like the sort of place where the Munsters could live, but in fact it’s occupied by Charles York ( Peter Gallagher ), a retired celebrity newscaster in the Peter Jennings/Dan Rather stentorian liberal mode, and his second wife, Dawn (Uni Park), a venerable Japanese chef.

Charles seems like a decent enough guy, but he’s full of himself. That’s why his adult children don’t trust him. He has summoned all four of them to meet for a dinner party: Jared (Jay Baruchel), a divorced weasel of a professor who goes on TV to be a bureaucratic cheerleader for the enlistment program; Rachel (Emily Hampshire), a seething corporate snake; Ashley (Allana Bale), an aspiring actress whose career has turned out to be nothing, leaving her miserable; and Noah (Sebastian), Charles’s adopted son, a bohemian nervous wreck who’s a piano prodigy and also a recovering addict who killed someone in a car accident (he’s got a prominent scar on his cheek). This is a brood so angry and lost that Eugene O’Neill might tell them to lighten up. But Cronenberg turns out to be a terrific director of actors, and we’re held by the toxic theatrical juiciness of the sibling rivalry.

Why a dinner party? Charles is using it to announce to his children that he has enlisted. He plans to die by euthanasia — that very night — and wants to bid everyone goodbye. (His wife is sacrificing herself too.) This is Charles’ way of leaving a legacy, of dying in a way that will make everyone think well of him. So there’s more than a little family resentment about it. Before long, men in white jumpsuits show up from D.O.C.S. (the Department of Citizen Strategy), the corporate entity the government has put in charge of euthanizing people. The squad leader, Bob (Enrico Colantoni), looks like a guy you’d see in a bowling alley, but he’s a bit of a creep, with a penchant for jaunty gallows humor. He administers the lethal injection to Charles in a peaceful enough fashion. But Dawn, Charles’s wife? She has vanished. Which leads to the real problem: Since the two of them signed an enlistment contract, someone from the York family — one of the four children — is going to have to volunteer to be euthanized in her place. They’ve got two hours to decide who it’s going to be.

Cronenberg treats the mansion as an enormous stage set, turning “Humane” into a kind of psychodramatic slasher movie. You could say that one of the film’s themes is privilege. The characters, as the children of a famous newscaster, thought they were exempt from self-sacrifice. But it turns out that a situation this ruthless is coming for everybody. Yet the film’s real theme is that a bureaucracy that’s too corrupt to solve essential problems (like climate change) will end up shredding the social fabric. Because underneath it all, that’s what it mostly knows how to do.

Frogspawn

Young country diary: What’s that droning noise coming from the river?

Belfast: At first I thought it was the planes flying overhead, then I looked down and saw the most spectacular thing I’ve seen in nature

I love going back to the same riverside path at the edge of the city. It’s so familiar, but thanks to nature no visit is ever the same. I took my first outdoor steps here beside pink flowers with seeds you can pop, visited the ducks on a snowy Christmas morning and walked my friend’s dog through a meadow with cows.

But one spring afternoon this year was the most amazing yet. I have never seen or heard anything so spectacular in nature. I was walking with my dad when I saw a frog hop across the muddy path. We then crossed a bridge to the other side of the river. There was a droning noise. At first I thought this was coming from planes overhead.

Young Country Diarist Anna

But we looked down into the river and saw hundreds, maybe even thousands, of frogs. Around them there were masses of frogspawn. If I was to touch it, I think it would have a similar texture to jelly. The green creatures seemed to be having an annual ceremony. I think they chose this spot as it’s a very still part of the river, sheltered by tall, thick trees. We also saw lots of different types of ducks.

I am very happy to see this as it shows the river is thriving with wildlife, this is great news for the environment in my local area. I am going to go back to the river soon to see how the frogspawn is getting on. Anna, 12

N.F.L. Draft Had Some Style Winners

The next class of football stars has done some fashion homework, but the evening was pretty tame compared with the N.B.A. draft.

“People want to sit around with the family and watch football,” Roger Goodell, the National Football League commissioner, said Thursday night before the 2024 N.F.L. draft. It is also increasingly the case that people want to sit around, alone or in groups, watching phenomenal athletes and physical specimens doing nothing more physically taxing than sauntering down a red carpet.

And, while the N.F.L. has a long way to go before it can stage a real challenge to the style dominance of N.B.A. tunnel-walk kings like Jerami Grant, Jarred Vanderbilt or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it was clear that this year’s football draft prospects had done some fashion homework.

Take the No. 1 draft pick, Caleb Williams, the U.S.C. quarterback chosen — to the surprise of almost no one — by the Chicago Bears. Mr. Williams dressed for his big night in a sophisticated dark blue, double-breasted zippered suit by Chrome Hearts, worn over a darker blue T-shirt. It was a sleek tone-on-tone look that was only improved when he donned his new team’s logo snapback.

Or consider the L.S.U. star Jayden Daniels, who wore a handsome dove-gray single-breasted suit, tieless, as he was chosen by the Washington Commanders. A player known for his ever-changing hairstyles, Mr. Daniels accessorized his look, impromptu, with a Commanders team cap perched atop his current coiffure, a head full of ropy twists.

Maybe the New England Patriots’ choice Drake Maye, wearing a single-breasted suit with a skinny tie, all in pale gray, was not flaunting a look you’ll ever see on the social media entity LeagueFits, where, as its author says, men who “used to go to war now post fit checks before prime time games.” But he made a strong case for the value of playing conservatively and sticking to your own sartorial lane.

For this critic’s money, some of the more compelling looks of this evening in Detroit belonged to Malik Nabers, the L.S.U. wide receiver who touchingly had his double-breasted suit lined with photo prints of “all the legends, all the people that made Malik what Malik is”; Marvin Harrison Jr., the Ohio State wide receiver who was the fourth pick and wore a jeweled pendant with a gridiron image of his dad, Marvin Harrison (19th pick in 1996), and who was additionally clad in sunglasses, a black suit, dark shirt and tie; and, finally, Taliese Fuaga, the 334-pound Samoan-American Oregon State offensive lineman, who wore a print shirt and floral lei.

One knock on the N.B.A. tunnel-walk stars is that they seldom look as though they are wearing clothes they’d have chosen without the guidance of agents and stylists or were not paid to wear. In that sense, N.F.L. draft night remained an oddly innocent affair.

Of course, there were inevitably abundant commercial tie-ins underpinning this display of fanfare, a hype night for a multibillion-dollar business. Still, compared with most widely cross-platform events these days, and considered in the light of an attention economy that often guarantees celebrities — newly minted or otherwise — a fortune for each post, the draft seemed almost quaint. A good percentage of the draft picks did not even trek to Detroit to be nominated. Like the rest of us, they watched the hoopla from home.
