Tip #7: Practice

Practice doesn’t make perfect — it makes progress. There’s no way of preparing for unforeseen circumstances, but thorough practice means you’ve done everything you can to succeed.

Rehearse your speech in front of a mirror or to a trusted friend or family member. Take any feedback and use it as an opportunity to fine-tune your speech. But remember: who you practice your presentation in front of may differ from your intended audience. Consider their opinions through the lens of them occupying this different position.

There’s no one-size-fits-all template for an effective presentation, as your unique audience and subject matter play a role in shaping your speech. As a general rule, though, you should aim to connect with your audience through passion and excitement. Use strong eye contact and body language. Capture their interest through storytelling and their trust through relatability.

Plan your presentation

Before you start creating your presentation, you should always brainstorm. Think about the topic and write all your ideas down. Then think about the message you want to communicate, what your goal is and what you want your audience to remember at the end.

The basic structure of a presentation is actually always the same and should consist of:

Introduction

Make sure that the structure of your presentation is not too complicated. The simpler it is, the better the audience can follow.

Personal Introduction

It is best to start your presentation by briefly introducing yourself which helps to build a connection with your audience right away.

Introduce the topic

Then introduce the topic, state the purpose of the presentation and provide a brief outline of the main points you will be addressing.

Mention the length

In the introduction, mention the approximate length of the talk and then also make sure you stick to it.

The introduction should be no longer than two slides and provide a good overview of the topic.

After that, you should spend about 50% of your presentation proposing a solution and explaining it in detail.

In the last 25%, describe what benefits this solution will bring to your audience and ask them to take a simple but relevant action that relates to the problem being discussed.

In the introduction, introduce a character who has to deal with a conflict. In the main part, tell how he tries to solve his problem but fails again and again. In the end, he manages to find a solution and wins.

But how do you transform a heap of information into a well-structured presentation you can’t stop reading? There’s a structure you can follow.

3-step process for organizing a magnetic presentation:

1. Prioritize content

Your presentation should immediately capture interest and demonstrate relevance before moving on to establish understanding .

A) Build interest:

Begin with a strong hook that grabs your audience's attention. This could be an intriguing statistic, a powerful image , or an engaging question. It should stir curiosity and make your audience eager to hear more.

B) Establish relevance:

Once you have their attention it's time to establish why your presentation matters to your audience.

Address your audience's main concerns. Make sure your content directly speaks to these pain points, and address them in order of importance.

2. Build anticipation

A great presentation is like getting a new car – it builds anticipation, takes you on a thrilling ride, and ends with you wanting to share the experience with all your friends.

Start with a compelling problem your audience relates to and follow up with a promise of an amazing way they can solve it. This problem-solution dynamic creates a suspense that keeps your audience glued to your presentation.

3. Use a story framework

Finally, use a story framework to give your presentation structure and flow.

Begin with a big idea that underpins your presentation. Then delve into the problem, showcasing why it needs attention. Present your solution, painting a vision of a better future for your audience.

You’ve got a huge presentation tomorrow, but you’re afraid to go to bed for fear of having an on-the-stage-in-my-skivvies level nightmare about the big day. We’ve all been there. Learning how to make a presentation (without breaking out into a cold sweat) takes practice.

In our experience, a serious case of the jitters is best fixed by a serious injection of expert wisdom.

We’ve gathered the best advice from experts like Tony Robbins, Steve Jobs, and Guy Kawasaki on how to make a good presentation great, along with insider knowledge on both designing and delivering a presentation.

How to make a good presentation.

Making a good presentation starts with crafting the content. No matter how compelling your message is, if you don’t get it out of your brain and on to the screen in a simple way, you’ll be met with a sea of blank faces. So, where to begin?

1. Create an easy-to-follow structure

When it comes to what you have to say, break it down into three simple sections: your presentation needs an introduction, body, and conclusion.

A compelling introduction . Your introduction needs to briefly sum up what you’re going to talk about and why it’s useful or relevant to your audience.

Offer a body of evidence . The body of your presentation is where you hit ’em with the facts, quotes, and evidence to back up your main points.

Sum up with key takeaways . The conclusion is where you loop back to your original statement and give the audience some key takeaways on how they can put into practice what they’ve learned.

  • No more than 10 slides in total . Who wants to sit through pages and pages of slides? No one, that’s who. By keeping your slide deck to 10 slides, even if your presentation is 30 minutes long, you’ll give the audience a chance to digest the on-screen messages in line with your talk. Using  concept maps  before structuring your slides can help keep to the point.

2. Limit the amount of copy on each slide

Less really is more, especially when it comes to making a good presentation. Too much text and the audience will just be reading the screen instead of looking at you and feeling the emotional impact of your message.

No more than six words per slide . Marketing king Seth Godin says we should have just six words per slide – that’s not a lot of copy. Choose your words carefully and rewrite until you’ve got it just right.

  • Think ‘bite-size’ information . We called ourselves Biteable a reason: studies show information is retained better when it’s broken down into bite-sized chunks. Video is a great way to do this, and research suggests it’s  95% more compelling than text.  Consider adding video to your presentation strategy. But regardless, break your information up into smaller, palatable pieces.

3. Be savvy with design details

A well-thought-out design can make all the difference between a good presentation and one that falls flat. Consider these design standards as you make your presentation.

Use color sparingly . Bright colors can dazzle, but too many can be off-putting. Use the colors most relevant to your message. We’d recommend sticking with one or two (not counting black and white) for your palette so it has a consistent look and feel.

Be consistent with your font . Consistent design makes you look more professional. Don’t switch between caps and lower case, Times New Roman and Comic Sans, or 8 and 30 point text size. Stick with one font and one size throughout. You can vary the emphasis with your words later, but keep your on-screen text uniform for a more cohesive message.

  • Format for perfection . A wonky line on a slide or a badly pixelated graphic will put some people off, as it will look like you haven’t tried very hard (or worse, that you just aren’t very good). Make sure your text is aligned and neat like in the example below.

4. Polish several times

Just like a pair of well-worn shoes, a good presentation often needs a few rounds of dusting before it’s shiny and sparkly.

Start Messy . Don’t be afraid to start messy. How you deliver your slides is as important as their content and design. Here are some quick pointers to help you get your message across with impact.

5. Have a strong opening

How you start and finish your presentation is extremely important. Audiences usually make up their minds about someone in the first seven seconds, so make those first moments count.

Be different . You’re doing a presentation about saving tree frogs in Costa Rica. You open with an amusing story about one that escaped on a  bunch of bananas  to the UK. A story like this is different and unexpected for your audience, so they’ll sit up and take notice.

Ask a question . Rhetorical questions are a great way to frame a topic and introduce ideas. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, ‘When will you be satisfied?’”

  • Tailor it to your audience . How much do you know about your audience? The more you know, the better. Especially if you know their likes and dislikes. Inserting a relevant metaphor or popular culture reference. Oprah Winfrey’s Stanford commencement address spoke to the graduates about her lessons learned and how they were entering ‘the classroom of life.’

6. Be genuine

Oscar Wilde said “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” A lack of authenticity will be spotted a mile away. Whatever you’re saying, speak from the heart and don’t try to impress – there’s no need to prove yourself, just to get the point across as you see it. After all, that’s why you’re there, and you can’t do more than that.

Use humor . Humor can be great for giving a presentation, but cut it out if it feels like a stretch. Telling a humorous story can break down any barriers, make you more likeable, and make your message more memorable (and people are surprisingly generous with laughter) but the faintest whiff of desperation will kill a funny vibe.

Don’t be afraid to mess up . The fear of making a mistake can make you inordinately nervous. Relax, even the best speakers mess up or have bad luck. Theresa May, ex-Prime Minister of England, once stumbled and  coughed her way through a presentation , with someone even handing her a resignation letter. She battled through like a pro, though, and simply acknowledged it and moved on. No big deal.

  • Open up and be vulnerable . Brené Brown,  a researcher whose presentations  have amassed over ten million views, says that “Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.” This means speaking your truth and daring to feel a little uncomfortable as you share a meaningful story. It will connect your audience to you like never before.

7. Have a plan for a smooth delivery

With all the prep you’re doing on the content and design of your presentation, it can be easy to overlook other variables that are within your control for a stress-free delivery.

Have a practice run-through . There’s nothing like reading it out loud to ensure your message makes sense before you actually deliver it. Try recording your presentation on video — this way you’ll be able to review with an accurate eye and notice whether your speech matches up with your slides. It’ll also help you sort out your run time.

Use a remote . A clicker or remote will help you face the audience and not have to keep turning back to your laptop. Sought-after public speaker Garr Reynolds says a remote is essential in order to pause and advance your presentation so you have time to be spontaneous and control the flow of your delivery.

Have backup material . Not everything you say is going to resonate with your audience. It’s best to be flexible enough to change the game as and when needed. Steve Jobs had standby anecdotes prepared to fill time when the technology he was using to give the presentation failed. Preparing for every eventuality will help soothe your nerves and allow you to feel more in control.

  • Use a timer . When you get into the flow of your message, it’s easy to go off on a tangent or even spend too long on audience questions. Put your phone on airplane mode and set the stopwatch just as you begin speaking. A quick glance down at the table during a pause will allow you to make sure you’re not going overtime.

8. To conclude, focus on audience value

You’re coming to the end of your presentation. How do you wrap it up in a way that will be everlasting in their memories? The experts recommend you focus on the feeling you want the audience to take home.

Leave your audience with an emotional impression .”They might forget what you said, but they’ll never forget the way they made you feel” said the poet Maya Angelou. By leaving them with an emotional impression, from a piece of video with moving music to a line from a song or poem, you’ll strike that resonant chord and end on a high.

Use a pause for key takeaways . Want the audience to remember something specific? Say it slowly and leave a pause at the end. The silence will emphasize what you said and make it meaningful.

  • Make your core message sing . A call-to-action is the best way to wrap up your presentation with strength and impact. What do you want your audience to do next? Tony Robbins tells a great story, moving his audience emotionally towards change.

Ever been to a really bad presentation? You know, the kind where the speaker stands behind the podium, uses slides that mirror what he is saying directly, and includes lots of data tables to validate his position.

But. "What's so bad about that?" you ask. "Isn't that how most presentations are given?" Yes. That is how most presentations are delivered, but that doesn't mean that's the most effective way to deliver them. This kind of presentation risks boring your audience to the point where they start wishing for a fire alarm to go off so they can escape. And once you lose someone, it is next to impossible to bring her attention back.

If the information you are presenting is important enough for you to deliver orally, then it demands an appropriate amount of planning and preparation so that the information you present is memorable – for the right reasons. Give a bad presentation and you'll be remembered all right: it just won't be the type of impression you want to leave in anyone's mind.

When someone presents well, it sends the message that the person is capable, confident, intelligent, and competent. These people get noticed and that type of attention bodes well for your career. Even if you don't make formal presentations in your current position, think about the future and keep in mind that you do have to present your ideas and opinions on a daily basis. The same basic principles of effective delivery apply.

1. Connect With and Understand Your Audience

To deliver a great presentation you have to consider the following audience characteristics:

  • Profile – Who are they? What is the common element that brings them together?
  • Needs – Why are they attending the presentation? What do they need to know after you've finished?
  • Wants – What do they want from the presentation? Do they want to increase knowledge, learn something or be entertained? How can you connect their interests with your message?
  • Expectations – What do they expect in terms of content and length?
  • Current Knowledge – How much explanation do you need to provide? What assumptions can you make?

When you know your audience, you can prepare content that appeals to them specifically. If you pass over this first crucial step you risk delivering a presentation that is content rich and relevance poor.

2. Prepare Your Content

Now that you know who you are presenting to and why they are there, you can determine what to present. Here are some tips for content preparation:

  • Don't try to cover everything. As Voltaire said, "The secret of being a bore is to tell all." Great presentations stimulate thoughts, questions, and discussion. Develop your content so that it covers the main points but leaves room for the audience to apply the information to their own circumstances.
  • Start off well with a great hook – you only have a few minutes right at the start to fully engage the audience. Don't use this time to present background information. Get your audience charged up and eager to listen. Make the relevance immediately obvious.
  • Also, start by telling your audience where you are heading. Don't make them wait for your conclusion, tell them up front what your premise or purpose is. This helps your audience stay focused. They may or may not agree with you at the start, but they will be able to quickly spot all of your supporting arguments.
  • Your presentation should have five to seven take-away points. This follows the chunking principle , which you can learn more about here .
  • Tell a story, make comparisons, and use lots of examples. Be sure to mix up the type of content to stimulate audience interest.
  • Present your ideas logically using supporting evidence as necessary.
  • Provide only as much background information as needed.
  • Outline actions or next steps that are required.
  • Develop a strong close, including a summary. Bring your conclusions back around to audience need and the hook you created. Consider ending with a question designed to stimulate further discussion.

3. Deliver Confidently

There are two main aspects of your delivery: your visual aids and your style. We'll look at them separately.

Unless your presentation is very short, you will need some sort of visual aid to keep the attention of your audience. There is a fine line, though, between drawing attention to your points, and distracting the audience from what you are saying. Here are some key factors to consider when designing slides:

  • Keep slides simple and easy to understand.
  • When explaining, start with the overall concept and then move to the details.
  • The information on the slide should add value to your presentation or summarize it – it is not meant to be your presentation.
  • Ensure that any charts, graphs or tables you include are very simple and easy to read. Use them sparingly.
  • Use images (clip art and photos) sparingly and make sure the image means something and isn't just there to fill up space.
  • Use pleasant color schemes, high contrast, simple fonts, and bold and italic to add meaning to words.
  • Don't use fly-ins, fade-ins or outs or other animations unless absolutely necessary to really emphasize a point. How many times have you been put into a hypnotic state watching words or lines fly into a presentation?

Delivery Style

The way you deliver the content is often what makes or breaks a presentation. Here are some pointers to remember:

  • Use gestures for meaning, not for comfort. Try not to talk with your hands or move about carelessly. Everything you do should have purpose i.e. gesture to the visual aid to draw the audience's attention.
  • Pause for effect after main points or after you present a visual aid.
  • Step out from behind the podium and connect with your audience – make sure you have a remote control device to change slides or cue other types of visuals.
  • Talk loudly enough for people at the back to hear, or use a microphone.
  • Make eye contact and hold it for three to five seconds. Any less and it looks like you are merely scanning the crowd.
  • Be passionate – show your audience that you care about what you are saying.
  • Consider putting up a blank or low-content screen between slides – this puts the attention where it should be: on you!
  • Change your pace and style from time to time.
  • Be natural – don't try to be a comedian if you're not.
  • Finish early rather than late.

When you present with confidence and authority, your audience will pay attention and react to you as someone who is worth listening to. Fake it if you need to, by turning your nervousness into creative and enthusiastic energy.

4. Control the Environment

You won't ever eliminate all sources of problems, but through diligent planning and preparation, you can mitigate your risks.

  • Practice, practice, practice: The ultimate goal is to deliver your presentation note-free. Short of that, you want to be sure you are comfortable with the material and that nothing comes as a surprise. Consider practicing in front of a video camera and reviewing your delivery. Don't take short-cuts here because it shows! The point is for the presentation to look effortless – when you struggle, the audience focuses on you, and not on what you are saying.
  • Keep the lights on: when you darken the room, the screen stands out, not you. And it also encourages sleep, which you want to avoid at all costs!
  • Always have back-ups and a backup plan. What if you forget your material? What will you do if the CD won't load? What if the equipment doesn't arrive on time? Plan for as many contingencies as possible.
  • Dress appropriately for the situation – find out in advance what the dress code will be.
  • Have a policy for answering questions – let your audience know when they can ask questions so you aren't inappropriately interrupted.
  • Finish on time, every time. Last impressions are just as important as first ones.

Presenting is not a natural activity and to do it well requires careful thought and lots of practice.

You can choose to be average, or even below average, by simply emulating what most other presenters do. Or, you can take your presentations to the next level and leave your audiences with a powerful message that they remember, while keeping them interested and connected from start to finish.

To do this you need to pay strict attention to your audience analysis, content preparation, delivery style, and the external environment. When you control these for optimum audience relevance, interest, and engagement you are ready to deliver a great presentation.

The final element you must add is lots and lots of practice. Make your next presentation great by planning and preparing well in advance and making it look like it does come naturally to you.

How to Structure your Presentation, with Examples

For many people the thought of delivering a presentation is a daunting task and brings about a  great deal of nerves . However, if you take some time to understand how effective presentations are structured and then apply this structure to your own presentation, you’ll appear much more confident and relaxed.

Here is our complete guide for structuring your presentation, with examples at the end of the article to demonstrate these points.

Why is structuring a presentation so important?

If you’ve ever sat through a great presentation, you’ll have left feeling either inspired or informed on a given topic. This isn’t because the speaker was the most knowledgeable or motivating person in the world. Instead, it’s because they know how to structure presentations – they have crafted their message in a logical and simple way that has allowed the audience can keep up with them and take away key messages.

Research has supported this, with studies showing that audiences retain structured information  40% more accurately  than unstructured information.

In fact, not only is structuring a presentation important for the benefit of the audience’s understanding, it’s also important for you as the speaker. A good structure helps you remain calm, stay on topic, and avoid any awkward silences.

What will affect your presentation structure?

Generally speaking, there is a natural flow that any decent presentation will follow which we will go into shortly. However, you should be aware that all presentation structures will be different in their own unique way and this will be due to a number of factors, including:

  • Whether you need to deliver any demonstrations
  • How  knowledgeable the audience  already is on the given subject
  • How much interaction you want from the audience
  • Any time constraints there are for your talk
  • What setting you are in
  • Your ability to use any kinds of visual assistance

Before choosing the presentation’s structure answer these questions first:

  • What is your presentation’s aim?
  • Who are the audience?
  • What are the main points your audience should remember afterwards?

When reading the points below, think critically about what things may cause your presentation structure to be slightly different. You can add in certain elements and add more focus to certain moments if that works better for your speech.

What is the typical presentation structure?

This is the usual flow of a presentation, which covers all the vital sections and is a good starting point for yours. It allows your audience to easily follow along and sets out a solid structure you can add your content to.

1. Greet the audience and introduce yourself

Before you start delivering your talk, introduce yourself to the audience and clarify who you are and your relevant expertise. This does not need to be long or incredibly detailed, but will help build an immediate relationship between you and the audience. It gives you the chance to briefly clarify your expertise and why you are worth listening to. This will help establish your ethos so the audience will trust you more and think you’re credible.

2. Introduction

In the introduction you need to explain the subject and purpose of your presentation whilst gaining the audience’s interest and confidence. It’s sometimes helpful to think of your introduction as funnel-shaped to help filter down your topic:

  • Introduce your general topic
  • Explain your topic area
  • State the issues/challenges in this area you will be exploring
  • State your presentation’s purpose – this is the basis of your presentation so ensure that you provide a statement explaining how the topic will be treated, for example, “I will argue that…” or maybe you will “compare”, “analyse”, “evaluate”, “describe” etc.
  • Provide a statement of what you’re hoping the outcome of the presentation will be, for example, “I’m hoping this will be provide you with…”
  • Show a preview of the organisation of your presentation

In this section also explain:

  • The length of the talk.
  • Signal whether you want audience interaction – some presenters prefer the audience to ask questions throughout whereas others allocate a specific section for this.
  • If it applies, inform the audience whether to take notes or whether you will be providing handouts.

The way you structure your introduction can depend on the amount of time you have been given to present: a  sales pitch  may consist of a quick presentation so you may begin with your conclusion and then provide the evidence. Conversely, a speaker presenting their idea for change in the world would be better suited to start with the evidence and then conclude what this means for the audience.

Keep in mind that the main aim of the introduction is to grab the audience’s attention and connect with them.

3. The main body of your talk

The main body of your talk needs to meet the promises you made in the introduction. Depending on the nature of your presentation, clearly segment the different topics you will be discussing, and then work your way through them one at a time – it’s important for everything to be organised logically for the audience to fully understand. There are many different ways to organise your main points, such as, by priority, theme, chronologically etc.

  • Main points should be addressed one by one with supporting evidence and examples.
  • Before moving on to the next point you should provide a mini-summary.
  • Links should be clearly stated between ideas and you must make it clear when you’re moving onto the next point.
  • Allow time for people to take relevant notes and stick to the topics you have prepared beforehand rather than straying too far off topic.

When planning your presentation write a list of main points you want to make and ask yourself “What I am telling the audience? What should they understand from this?” refining your answers this way will help you produce clear messages.

4. Conclusion

In presentations the conclusion is frequently underdeveloped and lacks purpose which is a shame as it’s the best place to reinforce your messages. Typically, your presentation has a specific goal – that could be to convert a number of the audience members into customers, lead to a certain number of enquiries to make people knowledgeable on specific key points, or to motivate them towards a shared goal.

Regardless of what that goal is, be sure to summarise your main points and their implications. This clarifies the overall purpose of your talk and reinforces your reason for being there.

Follow these steps:

  • Signal that it’s nearly the end of your presentation, for example, “As we wrap up/as we wind down the talk…”
  • Restate the topic and purpose of your presentation – “In this speech I wanted to compare…”
  • Summarise the main points, including their implications and conclusions
  • Indicate what is next/a call to action/a thought-provoking takeaway
  • Move on to the last section

5. Thank the audience and invite questions

Conclude your talk by thanking the audience for their time and invite them to  ask any questions  they may have. As mentioned earlier, personal circumstances will affect the structure of your presentation.

Many presenters prefer to make the Q&A session the key part of their talk and try to speed through the main body of the presentation. This is totally fine, but it is still best to focus on delivering some sort of initial presentation to set the tone and topics for discussion in the Q&A.

The above was a description of a basic presentation, here are some more specific presentation layouts:

Demonstration

Use the demonstration structure when you have something useful to show. This is usually used when you want to show how a product works. Steve Jobs frequently used this technique in his presentations.

  • Explain why the product is valuable.
  • Describe why the product is necessary.
  • Explain what problems it can solve for the audience.
  • Demonstrate the product  to support what you’ve been saying.
  • Make suggestions of other things it can do to make the audience curious.

Problem-solution

This structure is particularly useful in persuading the audience.

  • Briefly frame the issue.
  • Go into the issue in detail showing why it ‘s such a problem. Use logos and pathos for this – the logical and emotional appeals.
  • Provide the solution and explain why this would also help the audience.
  • Call to action – something you want the audience to do which is straightforward and pertinent to the solution.

Storytelling

As well as incorporating  stories in your presentation , you can organise your whole presentation as a story. There are lots of different type of story structures you can use – a popular choice is the monomyth – the hero’s journey. In a monomyth, a hero goes on a difficult journey or takes on a challenge – they move from the familiar into the unknown. After facing obstacles and ultimately succeeding the hero returns home, transformed and with newfound wisdom.

Another popular choice for using a story to structure your presentation is in media ras (in the middle of thing). In this type of story you launch right into the action by providing a snippet/teaser of what’s happening and then you start explaining the events that led to that event. This is engaging because you’re starting your story at the most exciting part which will make the audience curious – they’ll want to know how you got there.

Remaining method

The remaining method structure is good for situations where you’re presenting your perspective on a controversial topic which has split people’s opinions.

  • Go into the issue in detail showing why it’s such a problem – use logos and pathos.
  • Rebut your opponents’ solutions  – explain why their solutions could be useful because the audience will see this as fair and will therefore think you’re trustworthy, and then explain why you think these solutions are not valid.
  • After you’ve presented all the alternatives provide your solution, the remaining solution. This is very persuasive because it looks like the winning idea, especially with the audience believing that you’re fair and trustworthy.

Transitions

When delivering presentations it’s important for your words and ideas to flow so your audience can understand how everything links together and why it’s all relevant. This can be done  using speech transitions  which are words and phrases that allow you to smoothly move from one point to another so that your speech flows and your presentation is unified.

Transitions can be one word, a phrase or a full sentence – there are many different forms, here are some examples:

Moving from the introduction to the first point

Signify to the audience that you will now begin discussing the first main point:

  • Now that you’re aware of the overview, let’s begin with…
  • First, let’s begin with…
  • I will first cover…
  • My first point covers…
  • To get started, let’s look at…

Shifting between similar points

Move from one point to a similar one:

  • In the same way…
  • Likewise…
  • Equally…
  • This is similar to…
  • Similarly…

Internal summaries

Internal summarising consists of summarising before moving on to the next point. You must inform the audience:

  • What part of the presentation you covered – “In the first part of this speech we’ve covered…”
  • What the key points were – “Precisely how…”
  • How this links in with the overall presentation – “So that’s the context…”
  • What you’re moving on to – “Now I’d like to move on to the second part of presentation which looks at…”

Physical movement

You can move your body and your standing location when you transition to another point. The audience find it easier to follow your presentation and movement will increase their interest.

A common technique for incorporating movement into your presentation is to:

  • Start your introduction by standing in the centre of the stage.
  • For your first point you stand on the left side of the stage.
  • You discuss your second point from the centre again.
  • You stand on the right side of the stage for your third point.
  • The conclusion occurs in the centre.

Key slides for your presentation

Slides are a useful tool for most presentations: they can greatly assist in the delivery of your message and help the audience follow along with what you are saying. Key slides include:

  • An intro slide outlining your ideas
  • A  summary slide  with core points to remember
  • High quality image slides to supplement what you are saying

There are some presenters who choose not to use slides at all, though this is more of a rarity. Slides can be a powerful tool if used properly, but the problem is that many fail to do just that. Here are some golden rules to follow when using slides in a presentation:

  • Don’t over fill them  – your slides are there to assist your speech, rather than be the focal point. They should have as little information as possible, to avoid distracting people from your talk.
  • A picture says a thousand words  – instead of filling a slide with text, instead, focus on one or two images or diagrams to help support and explain the point you are discussing at that time.
  • Make them readable  – depending on the size of your audience, some may not be able to see small text or images, so make everything large enough to fill the space.
  • Don’t rush through slides  – give the audience enough time to digest each slide.

Guy Kawasaki, an entrepreneur and author, suggests that slideshows should follow a  10-20-30 rule :

  • There should be a maximum of 10 slides – people rarely remember more than one concept afterwards so there’s no point overwhelming them with unnecessary information.
  • The presentation should last no longer than 20 minutes as this will leave time for questions and discussion.
  • The font size should be a minimum of 30pt because the audience reads faster than you talk so less information on the slides means that there is less chance of the audience being distracted.

Group Presentations

Group presentations are structured in the same way as presentations with one speaker but usually require more rehearsal and practices.  Clean transitioning between speakers  is very important in producing a presentation that flows well. One way of doing this consists of:

  • Briefly recap on what you covered in your section: “So that was a brief introduction on what health anxiety is and how it can affect somebody”
  • Introduce the next speaker in the team and explain what they will discuss: “Now Elnaz will talk about the prevalence of health anxiety.”
  • Then end by looking at the next speaker, gesturing towards them and saying their name: “Elnaz”.
  • The next speaker should acknowledge this with a quick: “Thank you Joe.”

From this example you can see how the different sections of the presentations link which makes it easier for the audience to follow and remain engaged.

How Google Works – by Eric Schmidt

This presentation by ex-Google CEO  Eric Schmidt  demonstrates some of the most important lessons he and his team have learnt with regards to working with some of the most talented individuals they hired. The simplistic yet cohesive style of all of the slides is something to be appreciated. They are relatively straightforward, yet add power and clarity to the narrative of the presentation.

Start with why – by Simon Sinek

Since being released in 2009, this presentation has been viewed almost four million times all around the world. The message itself is very powerful, however, it’s not an idea that hasn’t been heard before. What makes this presentation so powerful is the simple message he is getting across, and the straightforward and understandable manner in which he delivers it. Also note that he doesn’t use any slides, just a whiteboard where he creates a simple diagram of his opinion.

The Wisdom of a Third Grade Dropout – by Rick Rigsby

Here’s an example of a presentation given by a relatively unknown individual looking to inspire the next generation of graduates. Rick’s presentation is unique in many ways compared to the two above. Notably, he uses no visual prompts and includes a great deal of humour.

However, what is similar is the structure he uses. He first introduces his message that the wisest man he knew was a third-grade dropout. He then proceeds to deliver his main body of argument, and in the end, concludes with his message. This powerful speech keeps the viewer engaged throughout, through a mixture of heart-warming sentiment, powerful life advice and engaging humour.

As you can see from the examples above, and as it has been expressed throughout, a great presentation structure means analysing the core message of your presentation. Decide on a key message you want to impart the audience with, and then craft an engaging way of delivering it.

By preparing a solid structure, and  practising your talk  beforehand, you can walk into the presentation with confidence and deliver a meaningful message to an interested audience.

Think of symbols as anchors for the eye to quickly find information. You can collect symbols off free stock sites or use the built-in ones in PowerPoint that are free to use!

Depending on if your presentation is formal or informal , you may also want to consider adding emojis! Emojis are fun ways to express different emotions and can help connect with a younger demographic.

Overall Branding, Tone of Voice & Consistency

Another tool you may have at your disposal is if your brand, business or company has brand guidelines. It will be the guide and compass to your presentation’s information that goes within it. By keeping consistent you can achieve a polished look even if it looks very simple.

Use your business voice to communicate ideas and set the tone for your presentation. Are you in an investment banking business and want people to rely on the information given to you? That would inform perhaps using blues and purples, which are calmer colors and a cleaner look. Are you an influencer who’s buying power and spending choices matter to your audience? Think of hierarchy of a form of narration or story structure. Your eye goes to the title, then to the subtitle, then to the body copy in a logical manner. Where the eye travels is one of those things we don’t think about often. But you can also utilize eye lines in photos. Is your subject in the photo looking left or right? Consider placing text to where your subject is looking and see how effectively your eye travels to that text.

We’ll look at hierarchy strictly as sizing of words for now, but note you can establish hierarchy with type, white space, alignment, etc. As a general rule of thumb, you should have consistent sizing for your Header (or title slide / slide title), your subtitles and your body text. That’s it! If the sizing in your PowerPoint is consistent, your words will look uniform and clean. Everything will be much easier to read and the eye will be trained to move each slide.

Don’t Forget Your Own Style

Also don’t forget to incorporate your own style and what kind of visuals you like. Even if your early visuals may seem simple, build up that design muscle with the basics and design techniques that look clean and consistent.

You’ll find as you design these basics, you’ll probably start noticing other visuals and things you like in other mediums and presentations. Keep a note or screenshot the presentation that inspired you. Create a mood-board that you can refer to in the future for quick idea inspiration. Copying gets a bad rap, but learning how to design something you like even if it’s a clone copy will teach you many things about design. Build a collection of images that informs everything you do: for your color scheme, your designs, the cadence of images, etc.

That being said, you can also use free stock websites like Freepik for some design layouts inspiration. Creative Market is a paid website but the site offers a ton of design inspiration. This site has design templates for what’s currently in and trending. You can subscribe to an email newsletter on either site to get bite sized design influence each day that goes straight to your inbox.

However, don’t be afraid to try something new!

Once you get to a level of comfortable designing, these new ideas will be much easier to execute with the technical knowledge you amassed when you started. It’s fair to say that when it comes to presentations, you might not share the same level of enthusiasm as your colleagues. And that’s OK, presenting to an audience can be tough to pull off if you’ve struggled in the past. But like any other skill in the workplace, there’s an art to getting them right, one that comes with practice – you just need to know what to look out for.

Whether it’s for a job interview or you’re speaking at a conference , a good presentation is made up of a few key ingredients. Get them right, and your audience will walk away informed and impressed. Below, we’ll look at these elements in more detail, including how to start and end your presentation, as well as how to make the middle bit count, so you can learn how to present with the best of them.

How to start a presentation

In the case of presentations, “first impressions count” has never been truer. Your opening should set the stage for what’s to follow, drawing in your audience in a way that’ll have them in the palm of your hand. A meek and mumbly intro, on the other hand, could lose an audience to the extent it’s hard to recover. So, what can you do to make sure that doesn’t happen?

Nail the introduction

If you’re presenting to a fresh audience, they’ll want to know who you are. But simply telling them your name and job title might come across a little flat. Try turning your introduction into a story that covers who you are, what your background is, and why the things you’re about to say are worth listening to.

Hook in your audience

Looking to create an instant impact with your presentation? Making a bold statement, asking a rhetorical question, or highlighting a surprising stat can all get your audience to bite.

A strong, simple statement is a great way of surprising your audience – and they’ll be all ears when it comes to hearing how you’ll then build on that.

Meanwhile, a rhetorical question gives them something to chew over. By engaging them with this method, you’ll have their full attention.

Highlighting a particular figure or statistic is a good tactic too, having the capacity to create shock or curiosity in your audience, or even act as a call to action (“We waste [x] number of pounds a year leaving the office lights on overnight. Let’s change this”).

Use visuals to your advantage

Imagery can also be a powerful presentation opener. Whether it’s a photo, an infographic, or a chart – images and visuals appeal to your audience’s imagination and back up your key talking points in a more memorable way.

What makes a ‘good’ presentation?

Everyone’s definition of what’s good will differ, but there’s definitely some best practices that all effective presentations stick to. When it’s time to prepare for your next one, keep these effective tips below in mind…

Use the 10-20-30 rule

This is a great rule of thumb that nicely covers the length of your presentation, and what it should look like. Your presentation should, ideally:

  • Have no more than 10 slides
  • Last for no more than 20 minutes
  • Use a font size of no less than 30 point

Sticking to these three things keeps your talk succinct and to the point, and ensures the slides themselves aren’t cluttered with too much information. Remember, you want you to be the focus of your attention – not the words onscreen.

If you want to convey more information, then create a handout for your audience to read – after the presentation is over.

Emphasise your core message

Keeping things succinct means you, and therefore your audience, won’t lose sight of the message (or messages) that you’re conveying. A good way of doing this is by asking yourself what they need and want to know, rather than what you can simply tell them for the sake of it. If you’re thinking of saying anything that might take away or dilute the message, take it out of the presentation entirely.

Show your enthusiasm

If you struggle to be enthusiastic about the topic you’re talking about, then so will your audience. Body language, tone of voice and eye contact are all effective ways of demonstrating enthusiasm. The latter, in particular, lets you build a rapport with your audience, strengthening the connection between you, your topic of talk, and those who are listening. This is especially important where remote presentations are concerned .

Non-verbal communication plays a big part in your presentation too. Send a positive message by gesturing openly, standing confidently, moving around the stage in a natural manner and avoiding things like crossing your arms, or keeping your hands in your pockets.

As for your voice, there are a few strategies that can help your audience hang onto your every word. Rather than rushing through your presentation, remember to take a breath, alter the speed of your voice when necessary and change your pitch and tone to avoid falling into a monotone delivery. Nothing sedates an audience quite like that.

Try recording yourself going through your presentation. Listening back will help show where you’re going wrong – and you can get to work on improving the pitfalls that might be holding your presentation back.

Optimise your slides

Creating an engaging presentation deck will help to make your job a whole lot easier on the day itself. When designing the look of your slides, try these:

  • Create a consistent aesthetic by using the same typography and colours throughout
  • When choosing your fonts, go for something that isn’t overly distracting
  • Don’t go overboard on text, cover the main points, and expand on these yourself
  • Keep your graphs and charts simple and uncluttered
  • Use high-quality photos from stock photography sites
  • Avoid using gimmicky special effects and animations

How to end a presentation

You’ve gotten through the hard part, now you’re ready to wrap up your presentation in a memorable way. In the same way you need to start strong, you should conclude things properly too. Here’s how you can do this…

Sum up the key points

Bringing things full circle helps to reiterate what the audience has just heard, making sure they leave with what you’ve wanted them to understand. Try this simple formula:

  • Tell them what you’re going to tell them
  • Tell them what you’ve just told them

Avoid the Q&A

This might seem like a cardinal sin, but hear us out: ending on a Q&A isn’t all that memorable. Try taking questions throughout the presentation instead. Or if you absolutely have to take them at the end, make sure to use one of the other tips we’ve mentioned here afterwards the Q&A session is over.

Use a call to action

You want to make your audience carry out a specific action through your presentation. But how can you inspire them? By using powerful, strong verbs and specific actions that’ll empower them to move and be moved.

End on a memorable quote

Chances are, someone from history has said something that relates to your presentation. Can’t find the words you want to end on? Turn to a memorable quote from someone with a knack for pithy, catchy one-liners instead.

Use a contact slide

If you’re presenting at a conference, then rather than a thank you slide, use this time to let your audience know how they can get in touch with you, whether it’s your email address, Twitter handle or company’s website. By all means thank the audience for listening, but don’t waste the opportunity to get them to do more on a slide that says the same thing.

Make it clear that the presentation is over

Don’t let your presentation awkwardly grind to a halt. Concluding in this way can turn a great talk into a bit of a damp squib, and leave audiences feeling uncomfortable. Be emphatic, and make sure your presentation ends with a proper full stop. Even a simple “thank you” will let the audience know that things have come to a close.

Keep your composure

After you’ve taken questions, ended on a memorable quote and the audience is starting to shuffle out, maintain that strong ending through your body language. This isn’t the time to start packing up your notes, fidgeting with your hands or slinking into the background. Wait patiently and confidently – especially when your audience are applauding you – which they should be after the tips we’ve just talked you through!

One of the most often overlooked parts of a presentation is the presentation handouts. So, in this post, we’ll give you a few examples of presentation handouts that you can create very easily and add impact to your speech or business meetings.

Good speakers and lecturers usually give presentation handouts to accompany their speeches. As a result, a great presentation handout can make your speech more memorable. It gives your audience the freedom to listen to your presentation instead of frantically taking notes.

The handouts you provide also help them remember the key points and highlights from your presentation, making your talk even more valuable. People are grateful for a good handout and will remember you (and the main points of your speech) long after the talk ended. Finally, your handout can be used as an exceptional marketing piece. If it is good enough, your audience members will both keep it and share it with others.

Don't Handout Your PowerPoint Slides as Notes

This has always been a hard and fast rule in my business presentation classes. But I have to admit, in recent years, I’ve changed my tune slightly here. When I first started teaching presentation classes, PowerPoint was still in its infancy. And the slideshows that people were creating were really awful. Folks would just create a never-ending series of bullet points on a never-ending slide deck. Since most presentations covered way too much content, it was impossible for the audience to retain most of it. In order to prevent information overload, presenters started printing off their slides and distributing the printed slide deck to their audience as a handout. As a result, the presenter ends up with a bad presentation accompanied by a bad handout.

However, if you get creative with your slides, you can actually use a printout of your slide deck to make your presentation more interactive (more on this later). The main point here is if you have a ton of content in your presentation, stuffing that content onto your slides and then just printing out your slides is not a good idea.

I sometimes make this point in class by starting to deliver a data-heavy slide deck. It typically only takes a few slides before someone in class figures out that I’m violating almost every tip that I’m giving them.

At that point, there is usually a nice laugh. I then switch to a better slideshow that is more audience-centered. The funny thing is, though, that before the class figures out that the bad PowerPoint presentation is a joke, someone in the class will often ask me if I will send them the slide deck.  So, if your audience is asking you for your slide deck, your presentation is probably not designed very well .

Three Easy Examples of Handouts for Presentations.

One of the main reasons that I have always encouraged my class members to not print out their slides is that the slides, without the speaker, aren’t going to make a lot of sense. However, most people will jot a few speaker notes of important information they want to say in the presentation. If you use the techniques that I cover here, you’ll likely create an outline with a few key items. You’ll likely also use stories, examples, analogies, anecdotes, quotes, statistics, and the like. Well, if you already have that content created before you create your slide deck, you could just insert that content into the Slide Notes in PowerPoint. Viola! Instant presentation handouts.

The Second Example of a Presentation Handout: Give Main Concepts with Space for Audience to Add Notes.

A friend of mine leads three-day training boot camps where he teaches social media marketing and website development. His handout is a three-ring binder full of printed pages. Each page has a series of rules followed by a quarter page of blank space. I once asked him, since the content that he was delivering was so detailed, why didn’t he just type it up and include it in his manuals.

He laughed and told me that he used to do that very thing. But the content in his industry was changing so quickly that, the moment he printed a new manual, those additional details would already be outdated. So, now, he just prints the core message. Then, he allows his students to fill in the blanks with the most current content that he delivers from the stage. (He gets fantastic reviews, by the way.)

I love this technique. It keeps the audience involved. It also allows the audience members to write out the content that is most important to each of them at the time they attended the meeting.

The Most Effective Example: Create a Presentation Handout that Contains Extra Content Not in Your Presentation

You want to include the content from your presentation in a written format. But you also want to add additional information that you won’t cover in the presentation. This is the technique that we use in our seminars and workshops.

For instance, if you are going to use a story as a piece of evidence in your verbal presentation, use a different story in your handout. If you use an analogy in your presentation, use a quote in your handout. When you use audience participation in your presentation, use a unique photograph in your handout.

If you do this, your target audience will see you as a valued expert on the topic. By the way, it is okay to use some of the same content in your slideshows, your oral presentations, and your handouts. It is important to be consistent. However, you want your verbal presentation to cover some key ideas that aren’t in your handout. And you want your handout to cover detailed information that you don’t speak about.

This type of presentation is a great handout because it becomes a textbook for your presentation. It does take longer to create a well-prepared handout. But you will find that the value to your audience far outweighs the additional effort.

During the presentation, you’ll want to say something like, “I’ve given you additional examples in your handout,” or “If you want the full step-by-step approach, you can download the handout from my website at [your URL].”

A Few Bonus Tips to Add Impact to Your Handouts.

Add a list of reference material for further reading

Your audience members will want to pick your brain. They want to know where you went to school, what kind of work experience you have, and most of all, where they can read more about your topic.

There’s a ton of resources out there, so instead of having your audience sort through them (or risk boring them with way too much detail in the presentation), just lead them in the right direction with your recommended reading. If the book is hard to find, or only available online, remember to include the link to where it can be purchased.

Consider adding a worksheet or action sheet

Depending on the type of presentation or speech you’re giving, you will likely have a call to action at the end, where you will encourage people to change or act on something related to your talk.

When you are selling a concept, idea or a product through a presentation, it is paramount to make it as good as possible since the perception of the audience will lie solely on the quality of the presentation. Emotions are evident in facial expressions and tonal variations. What is so important about emotions in a presentation? Emotions connect one with the audience on a personal level. This way the audience is able to identify with you. It keeps the audience engaged and interested in what you have to say. If you are selling a product or concept, you will require the buyer to have interested in whatever you are offering. Emotions also emphasize your human qualities which makes it different from listening to a machine explain a concept.

2. Sparse Content on the Slides

When making a presentation, it is important to note that the imagery you are using for the presentation is meant only to act as a complement to what you are saying instead of being a repetition. The word on the presentation should also be few so that the audience will focus on what you are saying and not on the screen. People do not typically read and listen at the same time, so having too much text on your slides can have serious consequences on the quality of your presentation. To keep the audience engaged, always have few words in the slides and a lot of content on your scripts. This way your presentation will be awesome as all attention will be on you.

3. Passion and/or Strong Conviction

The most convincing speakers in history all had conviction – a deep belief in what they were doing is right.  Being passionate about the topic of presentation is an indispensable quality one should always have. You should always strive to present the information to the audience in a way that they can easily understand the concepts and ideas you are putting across. You should think of ways in which you can make the audience to be at the center of the story and not just an observer. Unless it is a technical presentation, use words that are easily understood by everyone. It is not always true that using big words will make you sound smarter. However, it is good to limit the amount of information that you put across to the audience. The audience cannot remember everything you tell them thus it is necessary to reduce the information to the main points that you need to get across. If you are strongly convinced on the topic of presentation and you present it with a lot of passion, your audience will also be captivated and will want to know more about your topic of presentation.

4. Credibility or Authority

Another component of a good presentation is the credibility of the speaker. You have to find ways of building and gaining credibility. A good reputation can go a long way to developing credibility with your audience. However, the presentation must confirm prior assumptions of the audience. Being natural in the presentation also helps to build your credibility. This can be done by either providing persuasive information, establishing a rapport with the audience using wits and humor. This helps you seem more genuine rather than as if you are reading from a bunch of index cards or a script. It is always good to display your human qualities while maintaining a sense of professionalism throughout the presentation.

5. Good Eye Contact

Maintaining eye contact with the audience throughout the presentation also makes the presentation great. It increases the level of interaction with the audience and increases their confidence in you. The presentation becomes a one to one presentation rather than a one to many talk. Eye contact also helps to make the audience trust you and your words.

6. Loud and Audible Voice

Having an audible voice which is loud enough shows your passion and confidence during the presentation. The audience can easily tell when you don’t believe even in what you are saying simply from the loudness of your voice. It is therefore necessary to ensure that everyone in the audience can hear you clearly and no one is left behind or straining to hear. This will make a big difference in the audience’s perception towards you.

7. Tonal Variations

It is not enough to just have a loud enough voice. Your voice should also be varied with intonations when emphasizing on certain concepts and clarifying details. Having a variety in the voice also goes a long way to keep the audience engaged and interested in the topic being presented.

8. Be Relaxed Yet Professional

The presenter should always strive hard to look relaxed. Having a relaxed look gives the audience the confidence that you know what you are talking about and that you have a fairly good coverage of the concepts. With a relaxed look, the audience is also relaxed and they can be able to follow the presentation easily gaining new concepts along the way.

9. Organization of Ideas and Concepts

The way in which your presentation is organized also has a significant effect on whether it will be a good or bad presentation. The flow of ideas and concepts should be gradual and smooth ensuring that the audience is comfortable with one concept before moving on to another. This is very important in presentations such as sales pitches as it reveals the products gradually giving the audience a whole picture in bits which fit together nicely.

10. Interesting Examples and Stories

Having a dull and dry presentation is one thing to be avoided at all costs. This can be rectified by mixing the presentation with interesting examples and funny stories that will help the audience understand the topic being presented better. The examples and stories, however, have to be relevant to the topic at hand or else they will seem strange and out of place. These stories also have the ability to bring life into a dry subject.

In conclusion, what makes a good presentation mainly depends on the way in which it is delivered, the way in which the presentation is organized and how the presenter feels about the topic, the audience and themselves.

So weighed down have Americans become by student debt, and so potent a political issue has it become in the US, that President Joe Biden plans to waive interest or write off money owing by  30 million  of them.

He is doing it bit by bit, in the face of resistance from the  US Supreme Court . He has already axed or wound back 4.3 million debts, and on Friday cancelled  277,000  more.

The benefits, as he keeps telling anyone who will listen in the lead-up to the November election, are likely to be increased consumer spending, better mental health and credit scores for borrowers, and  increased home ownership .

In Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is under pressure to do something — anything — for Australians under the same sort of pressure.

Every June, the amount owed jumps

Every June the amount that someone who has borrowed under the  Higher Education Loan Program  (HELP) jumps. Because the jump is linked to inflation, and because inflation has been low for decades, in most Junes the jump has been small, until last June.

On June 1 2023, Australians who had made no payments over the previous year faced a jump of  7.1 per cent . Someone who had owed $25,000, suddenly owed $26,770, and so on.

A  quarter of a million  Australians have signed a petition asking for change.

The good news is there's likely to be some change, and we are likely to hear about it soon, in the lead-up to the May budget.

The bad news for borrowers is it won't be debt relief of the kind Biden is offering.

It's worse in the US

While in both Australia and the US it's the government that lends to pay student fees rather than private lenders (who don't like the risks) in the US the loans are really onerous, requiring fixed monthly repayments over a set period of time,  regardless of the borrower's circumstances .

In Australia and the United Kingdom and New Zealand and some other countries that have copied Australia's system, the loans are  income contingent , meaning they only need to be repaid when the borrower's income rises to a certain level.

At the moment Australia's repayment threshold is  $51,550  per year, meaning anyone who earns less than that doesn't need to repay a cent, perhaps forever if their income never climbs that high.

Where payments are required, they are taken out in the same way as income tax is,  each fortnight  for pay-as-you-earn employees.

Buried within Biden's announcement is a decision to move towards an Australian-style plan he has called  SAVE , which stands for Saving on a Valuable Education.

If it becomes law, single Americans won't have to repay until they earn $US32,800. For an American supporting a family of four, the threshold will be $US67,500. It will be an Australian-style system.

Easy wins for Albo

While Australia's system is much better than the one in the US and has been  copied around the world , it is far from perfect.

A simple change, identified by the report of the  Australian Universities Accord  delivered to Education Minister Jason Clare in February, is to increase the amount owing each year by either the rate of increase in prices or the rate of increase in wages, whichever is lower.

Usually, prices increase by less than wages, which is why the system was  set up  in 1988 to index amounts owed to prices.

But last year, unusually, prices increased faster than wages. In those years it would be simple to lift the amount owed only in line with wages, as the  report recommends .

The amount owed needs to increase in line with something, because otherwise its value would shrink rapidly as prices rose. The government doesn't charge interest (which would hurt) so instead it lifts the amount owed in line with prices to ensure that compared to other things it remains little changed.

Make repayments more like tax

Although we repay student loans through the income tax system, we don't do it like income tax.

Here's how it works for tax: on our first $18,200 of income we pay nothing, then we pay 19 cents in the dollar for  each extra dollar  we earn up to the next threshold, and so on. The key words here are "for each extra dollar". We continue to pay nothing on the first $18,200 we earn.

Higher education loans work differently. For them, we repay nothing until we earn $51,550, and then at that point, even if we earn just one dollar more, we pay one per cent of our annual income, the entire $51,550 (which amounts to $515).

It's a  repayment cliff  that sends us backwards. It means earning an extra dollar costs us more than $500 in that year. It can mean an  effective marginal tax rate  of 500 per cent.

The cliff matters. Each year, there's an  impressive cluster  of taxpayers who happen to be earning just under the threshold. More likely to be women than men, they might be deciding not to work in order to keep their incomes below the threshold.

Make it easier to get home loans

Britain  and other nations that copied Australia's system don't impose large repayments in one hit, and the economist who designed Australia's system now says that part of the system was " an error, a mistake ".

That economist, Bruce Chapman, has suggested a redesign that would require collections only on extra rather than total incomes, a proposal the report to the government endorses.

And there's something else Albanese can do. Right now Australia's banking regulator requires banks to count student loans  as debt  for the purpose of determining who can get a housing loan, knocking some former students out.

Chapman says it would make more sense to treat the compulsory payments as tax, which is how they function. All they do is reduce after-tax income, and for low earners, they don't even do that. It'd get more people into housing.

What could Caitlin Clark’s WNBA transition from Iowa look like?

Reality is coming.

In the words of Diana Taurasi , as spoken to Scott Van Pelt on SportsCenter, Caitlin Clark is due for a reckoning when she gets to the WNBA . After four years of dominating the college game, Clark is starting the next chapter of her career at the bottom as one of the youngest players in the most talented league in the world. Regardless of what the overall arc of Clark’s career ends up being, it is unlikely that she hits the ground running as the best player on the court every night, as she did at Iowa.

Hype won’t be an issue for Clark; she is accustomed to feeling pressure and meeting the moment. She was a top-five recruit coming out of high school who ended up as the leading scorer in college basketball history. She proclaimed her goal as a freshman to get Iowa back to the Final Four for the first time since 1993, and she did it – twice. As the eyes of the public lasered in on her during every successive game of the Hawkeyes’ 2024 NCAA Tournament, Clark kept winning, shattering viewership records in the process.

She has been the center of attention before. The only difference now, as Clark is the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever , is that the players she suits up against will be able to do something about it.

“It’s a different game, there’s an adjustment period, there’s a period of grace that you have to give rookies when they get to the league,” Taurasi said at USA Basketball training camp in Cleveland. “We’ve had some of the greats to ever play basketball, and it takes two or three years to get used to a different game (against) the best players in the world.”

The most significant change Clark will encounter in the WNBA is the physicality and strength of her opposition. We saw Clark struggle with aggressive ball pressure from West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament, causing her to post her worst assist-to-turnover ratio (3 to 6) of the season. UConn ’s Nika Mühl had her in a straitjacket during the Final Four, picking Clark up full-court and limiting Clark to her lowest scoring total (21 points) of 2023-24. And the trees of South Carolina made it challenging for Clark to finish inside, as she missed 10 2-pointers.

That’s the type of defense Clark can expect to encounter every night in the WNBA, starting with Gamecocks alums Tiffany Mitchell and Tyasha Harris in Indiana’s opener against Connecticut . Furthermore, while Clark got to hide on the Hawkeyes’ defense, deferring the toughest matchups to Gabbie Marshall , too many offensive threats exist on every team in the pros. She’ll have opposing players trying to take her off the dribble and get into her body on that end as well.

“Challenge-wise, I think the physicality of going against grown women is going to be tough,” Andraya Carter said in the WNBA’s pre-draft Zoom call. “The hits are going to be a little bit harder. The checks are going to be harder. The defense is going to be more physical and the players will be faster.”

The jump to the pros is often more challenging for top guard prospects. Of the nine rookies who have placed in the top 10 of WARP (wins above replacement player) since 2010, only Maya Moore was a perimeter player, according to ESPN.com . And Clark’s game doesn’t exactly resemble that of her childhood idol.

Former No. 1 picks Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu each experienced severe growing pains in their ascent to All-Star status. Plum didn’t average double-digit scoring until her fourth season, a somewhat shocking turn of events for the then-leading scorer in Division I women’s college history. Similarly, Ionescu didn’t make more than 35 percent of her 3-pointers until her fourth season despite converting 42.2 percent of such looks in college.

Nevertheless, Clark has a few advantages going for her relative to that pair. At 6-foot, she’s bigger than Plum, which will give her cleaner shooting angles right away. Opponents might not be able to put their best defender on Clark right away with All-Star Kelsey Mitchell also in the Fever backcourt, and Clark has deeper range than Plum at this stage, allowing her to stretch the defense.

Ionescu was bothered by a severe ankle sprain over her first two seasons, so health could be the biggest differentiator for Clark early in her career. But Ionescu’s difficulty playing as a lead ballhandler is instructive — despite being the all-time college leader in triple-doubles, she only flourished in the pros next to another point guard. Clark will be playing at the one; as such, her passing will need to shine right away. Fortunately, that might be the most pro-ready skill in her tool box.

“There will be challenges, but at the same time the talent around her is also going to be better,” Rebecca Lobo said on the pre-draft call. “I’m excited to see what that looks like in particular on the offensive end of the floor.”

Perhaps a more useful comparison for Clark is Rhyne Howard , the No. 1 pick in 2022. Howard was a high-volume 3-point shooter at Kentucky and succeeded as a scorer as a rookie because she kept launching from distance, earning All-Star honors in her first season. Howard didn’t do too much shot creation for others — she’s more of a wing than Clark — but used her size to pull up against smaller guard defenders, something her fellow No. 1 pick can replicate.

Clark’s deep repertoire of skills, whether that’s shooting off the catch, creating for others, or generating good looks for herself, makes it plausible that she’ll be able to rely on one of those to make her mark immediately. She’s in a better position to succeed than those who preceded her in recent years because her resume is in a class of its own.

Even if reality hits right away, there’s a long runway for Clark to figure out how to dominate at the next level. She is being set up for success by a franchise that will prioritize her development and optimize her basketball situation. Sooner or later, everyone agrees that Clark’s game will translate, even Taurasi.

“When you’re great at what you do,” Taurasi said, “you’re just gonna get better.”

Heat Rash: How It Looks and What to Do

Heat rash, also known as eccrine miliaria , sweat rash, and prickly heat, is a skin rash that causes the skin to turn red and feel warm or prickly (stinging). It also causes small red dots in the affected skin area in people with lighter skin tones and darker spots in people with darker skin tones.

Heat rash occurs in adults and children when the body sweats more than usual. It is more common during the summer months or in hot, dry climates.

Heat rash can also affect newborns because their eccrine sweat glands are not yet fully developed.  Eccrine sweat glands open directly onto the surface of the skin and are found in most areas of the body.  In newborns, the rash may appear as thin blisters or tiny water blisters on the face, trunk, and arms.

How Does Heat Rash Look?

Heat rash can be identified by skin location and appearance. It can develop anywhere the body sweats, but the neck, scalp, chest, groin , and underarms are the most commonly affected areas in adults and older children.

The most common symptoms are itching and small bumps in the affected skin area.  In people with lighter skin tones, these bumps may appear red. In people with darker skin tones, they may appear darker than the surrounding skin.

Symptoms in infants often appear on the neck, chest, and upper back. Older children may experience a prickly pins-and-needles feeling, and babies may have tiny water blisters in the affected skin area.

Heat rash can present in different ways and on different skin areas. It is caused by blockage and inflammation of the eccrine sweat ducts.

Heat rash is sometimes divided into three categories based on the level of blockage of the sweat ducts. Categories are:

  • Miliaria crystallina : This subtype occurs due to sweat duct obstruction close to the skin's surface. It presents as blisters on the neck, head, and upper trunk.
  • Miliaria rubra : This subtype obstructs the mid-epidermis—the deeper layers of the skin. In adults, this type of heat rash affects the upper trunk, scalp, neck, and body fold areas that rub against clothing. In children, it affects the trunk and skin of the neck, groin, and armpits. It sometimes causes pustules (raised, pus-filled growths) on the trunk and extremities.
  • Miliaria profunda (tropical anhidrosis): This heat rash subtype affects the sweat glands in the middle layer of skin (at or below the dermo-epidermal junction).

Onset of Symptoms 

Symptoms of heat rash typically come quickly. The rash will appear within minutes to hours of excessive sweating. 

Sweating is the body's response to heat and is intended to cool. When sweat leaves the pores of the skin, it evaporates and takes body heat with it.

If the skin's ducts become clogged, sweat cannot reach the surface and evaporate. It will become trapped and can cause heat rash. 

Appearance and Texture

Depending on the type of heat rash you are experiencing, the appearance and texture of the rash will differ. 

Miliaria crystallina presents as a clear or skin-colored heat rash. The rash will present with fluid-filled bumps on the skin. It can affect up to 9% of newborns. 

Miliaria rubra is the type of miliaria often called prickly heat because it causes a burning itch and presents as red-colored in lighter skin tones and gray, purple, or dark brown in darker skin tones. This type of heat rash is more common in adults than children. If this type of heat rash causes pustules, the affected skin area may appear white or yellow. Pustules can be painful or become infected.

Miliaria profunda causes a heat rash that occurs deep into the skin layers and occurs frequently (chronic). It can cause skin inflammation (swelling and redness), irritation, and infection. Miliaria profunda sometimes presents with large, firm skin bumps when exposed to heat. It can also cause systemic symptoms like nausea and dizziness.

Skin Tone Presentation

Heat rash can present differently on different skin tones. For example, heat rash on lighter skin tones often is red, and on darker skin tones, it can be a gray, purplish, or dark brown.

The difference is due to the amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the substance that gives hair, skin, and eyes their color (pigment).

Heat rash can be uncomfortable, and some types are more painful than others. For example, the small, inflamed blisters of miliaria rubra can be extremely itchy. On the other hand, milaria crystallina's clear, fluid-filled bumps tend to not be painful or itchy.

Extreme itch is a symptom of the most painful type of heat rash, miliaria profunda. If it causes pustules, the pus-filled bumps may become inflamed and swollen.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat rash can sometimes be present along with heat exhaustion . With heat exhaustion, the body overheats and cannot cool down.

Symptoms of heat rash include:

  • Cold and clammy skin

Is It a Heat Rash or a Skin Allergy?

The main difference between a heat rash and a skin allergy is that heat rashes occur in warm weather, especially when you're outdoors and sweating and your sweat ducts become obstructed. 

An allergy is an immune response to an allergen, such as plant, cosmetic, metal, food, or insect bites. A skin allergy may present with hives—red, raised, itchy bumps that may burn and sting. Hives typically present in more than one body area, whereas a heat rash appears in one affected area. 

Additional skin conditions that may look like heat rash are:

  • Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP): A rare skin reaction related to medication
  • Bacterial folliculitis: Inflammation or infection of one or more hair follicles  
  • Fungal skin infections : A skin rash caused by fungi
  • Grover's disease : A skin disorder that causes an itchy rash on the back and chest. It is twice as common in people assigned male at birth and most often occurs in White adults after age 60.
  • Herpes simplex : A virus that causes skin infections
  • Toxic erythema of newborn: A benign (harmless) skin condition that affects newborns

Immediate Relief to Soothe Heat Rash 

Some home remedies can provide quick relief for heat rash. Home remedies that can help include: 

  • Cool bath or shower : A cool bath or shower can help cool the body and unclog pores in the affected skin area. After bathing, air dry the skin rather than rub it down with a towel.
  • Get out of the heat : Avoiding heat and moving to an air-conditioned area can help reduce sweating and prevent the rash from worsening. If you don't have access to air conditioning, use fans to keep your home cool. If you cannot keep your home cool, consider going somewhere cooler, such as a mall or a friend's home.
  • Apply cold compresses : Cool compresses can cool and soothe affected skin. To protect the skin, wrap ice or gel ice packs in a towel.
  • Take an oatmeal bath : An oatmeal bath can help reduce the itch caused by the heat rash. Add 1 to 2 cups of oatmeal to a lukewarm bath. Oats have anti-inflammatory properties that can treat itch and irritation. You might also consider making a paste of one part oatmeal to one part water and applying it to the affected heat rash area. 
  • Aloe vera : Pure aloe vera gel can soothe heat rash. Its anti-inflammatory properties can cool down affected skin. Use aloe sparingly to avoid further clogging the skin pores. 
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing : Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing helps you to avoid irritation of your skin. If the heat rash affects the groin or under the breasts, it might help to avoid wearing undergarments until the rash clears up.

For an infant with heat rash:

  • Remove or loosen the child's clothing. 
  • Move the child to a cool, shady area.
  • Cool the child with cool compresses or a cool bath.
  • Allow the baby's skin to air dry rather than using a towel.

To avoid irritation, do not use ointments and lotions on your baby's skin. If your child's rash gets worse or if they develop a fever , seek immediate medical attention.

Managing Heat Rash Over Several Days 

Heat rash typically resolves in a few hours, but if it is severe, it may take days or weeks to go away. A severe rash may require over-the-counter (OTC) treatments.

It is always a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before using OTC medicines to manage heat rash.

OTC options for managing heat rash include:

  • Antihistamine medicines : Benadryl or other antihistamine medications may relieve heat rash symptoms, especially inflammation and itching.
  • Steroid creams : Steroid creams like hydrocortisone can help treat heat rash by reducing inflammation, itch, and irritation. Apply a thin layer of cream over the affected area and rub until the cream is fully absorbed to avoid further blocking sweat glands. 
  • Calamine lotion : Calamine lotion can treat discomfort and itch related to heat rash. You can find calamine lotion over the counter at a drugstore or pharmacy.

When to Consult a Healthcare Provider 

If you experience severe symptoms of heat rash, contact a healthcare provider. Severe symptoms include:

  • Severe itching 
  • Rash that feels warm 
  • Signs of infection (fever, nausea, severe skin swelling in the affected area, or blisters that leak fluid or pus)
  • Heat rash that does not improve with home treatment or lasts longer than a few days

For an infant or younger child, contact your child's healthcare provider if:

  • The heat rash area looks infected, even without a fever.
  • The rash has not gone after three days of home treatment.
  • If you feel the child needs to be seen or if you have other concerns for the child's health.

Staying Ahead of Heat Rash on Hot Days 

While heat rash typically isn't dangerous, it can be uncomfortable. Fortunately, it is preventable. 

You can prevent heat rash by:

  • Staying cool : During the hot, humid summer months, try spending more time in cool environments. An air-conditioned area is ideal, but even a fan or shade can help. You can also cool down with a cool shower or bath or by taking a dip in a pool.
  • Wearing light, loose clothing : Wearing lighter, looser clothing can help reduce sweating and keep skin dry.
  • Keeping skin dry : Avoid intense exercise that causes excessive sweating when outdoors in hot, humid weather. Change out of wet and sweaty clothing after working out or returning from the outdoors. 
  • Good skin care : Keep skin clean with gentle daily exfoliation when showering or bathing to unclog skin pores. 
  • Avoid ointments, creams, and harsh soaps : Some creams and ointments can clog sweat glands. Opt for gentle, fragrance-free soaps when bathing. 
  • Stay hydrated : Make sure you and your child are drinking plenty of water when outdoors on hot days.

Heat rash is a common but uncomfortable skin irritation that occurs during hot and humid weather. Different categories of heat rash cause varying symptoms, including clear, fluid-filled blisters and red or dark itchy bumps. Heat rash can affect anyone, including infants and children.  

Cooling down and wearing loose, lightweight clothing can help manage heat rash. If symptoms of heat rash last longer than a few days, if the rash is severe or painful, or if you or a child shows signs of infection, including fever, contact a healthcare provider.

Heat rash is a preventable condition. During the summer months, you can reduce your risk by staying cool and hydrated, avoiding exercise in hot, humid weather, and keeping your skin clean and free of creams and ointments.

Mike Tyson looks like he hasn’t run this decade.

In a viral social media post, Tyson can be seen running in gingerly fashion and groaning as he reaches top speeds in a short sprint with the caption “I’m coming for you, #PaulTyson.”

Tyson, turning 58 in June, is set to fight YouTube sensation and boxer Jake Paul on July 20.

While doing the sprint Tyson seems to be grunting in pain with his right arm flailing out in an attempt to stop during the cone drill.

Far beyond his athletic prime, Tyson is at least attempting to get into fight shape with the fight just three months away.

He announced that he will not be smoking cannabis ahead of this bout against Paul (9-1).

Tyson’s publicist said he “only stopped as a means of following all of the rules.”

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which regulates combat sports in the state, does not allow anyone to use marijuana.

That could spell trouble for the former heavyweight champ.

In a 2019 podcast appearance with Joe Rogan, Tyson said cannabis keeps his ego in control .

“It smooths me out,” Tyson said. “I like who I am when I smoke, when I’m not on weed I don’t like who I am sometimes. I want to get away from that guy.

Rogan and Tyson agreed that the effects of marijuana have helped mellow them out.

It goes far beyond being less angry, though.

Tyson stopped smoking cannabis in the lead up to the Jake Paul fight.

Tyson also mentioned that he was in bed for a week after a 2020 30-second clip of him hitting mitts had him bedridden for a week due to issues with his sciatica.

Now four years older, Tyson will need to recover without cannabis so the fight can be approved by the TDLR (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation).

Tyson heads into this fight with Paul furiously attempting to get into shape but the side effects of the lack of weed might already be taking their toll.

Cries of Sexism Greet a Nike Olympic Reveal

The sporting giant offered a sneak peek at its track and field outfits for Team U.S.A., and an unexpected backlash ensued.

Ever since the Norwegian women’s beach handball team turned the fact that they were required to wear teeny-tiny bikini bottoms for competition into a cause célèbre, a quiet revolution has been brewing throughout women’s sports. It’s one that questions received conventions about what female athletes do — or don’t — have to wear to perform at their very best.

It has touched women’s soccer (why white shorts?), gymnastics (why not a unitard rather than a leotard?), field hockey (why a low-cut tank top?) and many more, including running.

So it probably should not have come as a shock to Nike that when it offered a sneak peek of the Team U.S.A. track and field unies during a Nike Air event in Paris celebrating its Air technology on Thursday (which also included looks for other Olympic athletes, like Kenya’s track and field team, France’s basketball team and Korea’s break dancing delegation), they were met with some less-than-enthusiastic reactions.

See, the two uniforms Nike chose to single out on the mannequins included a men’s compression tank top and mid-thigh-length compression shorts and a woman’s bodysuit, cut notably high on the hip. It looked sort of like a sporty version of a 1980s workout leotard. As it was displayed, the bodysuit seemed as if it would demand some complicated intimate grooming.

Citius Mag , which focuses on running news, posted a photo of the uniforms on Instagram, and many of its followers were not amused.

“What man designed the woman’s cut?” wrote one.

“I hope U.S.A.T.F. is paying for the bikini waxes,” wrote another. So went most of the more than 1,900 comments.

The running comedian Laura Green posted an Instagram reel in which she pretended to be trying on the look (“We’re feeling pretty, um, breezy,” she said) and checking out the rest of the athlete’s kit bag, which turned out to include hair spray, lip gloss and a “hysterectomy kit,” so the women would not have to worry about periods.

When asked, Nike did not address the brouhaha directly, but according to John Hoke, the chief innovation officer, the woman’s bodysuit and the man’s shorts and top are only two of the options Nike will have for its Olympic runners. There are “nearly 50 unique pieces across men’s and women’s and a dozen competition styles fine-tuned for specific events,” Mr. Hoke said.

Women will be able to opt for compression shorts, a crop top or tank and a bodysuit with shorts rather than bikini bottoms. The full slate of looks was not on hand in Paris but more will be revealed next week at the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit in New York. The Paris reveal was meant to be a teaser.

Mr. Hoke also pointed out that Nike consults with a large number of athletes at every stage of the uniform design. Its track and field roster includes Sha’Carri Richardson, who happened to be wearing the compression shorts during the Paris presentation, and Athing Mu. And there are certainly runners who like the high-cut brief. (The British Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith , another Nike athlete, told The New York Times last summer that while she opts to run in briefs, she also leans toward a leotard style, rather than a two-piece.)

What Nike missed, however, was that in choosing those two looks as the primary preview for Team U.S.A., rather than, say, the matching shorts and tanks that will be also available, it shored up a longstanding inequity in sports — one that puts the body of a female athlete on display in a way it does not for the male athlete.

“Why are we presenting this sexualized outfit as the standard of excellence?” said Lauren Fleshman, a U.S. national champion distance runner and the author of “Good for a Girl.” “In part because we think that’s what nets us the most financial gain from sponsors or NIL opportunities, most of which are handed out by powerful men or people looking at it through a male gaze. But women are breaking records with ratings in sports where you don’t have to wear essentially a bathing suit to perform.”

The problem such imagery creates is twofold. When Nike chose to reveal the high-cut bodysuit as the first Olympics outfit, purposefully or not, the implication for anyone watching is that “this is what excellence looks like,” Ms. Fleshman said.

That perception filters down to young athletes and becomes the model girls think they have to adopt, often at a developmental stage when their relationships with their bodies are particularly fraught.

And more broadly, given the current political debate around adjudicating women’s bodies, it reinforces the idea that they are public property.

Still, Ms. Fleshman said, “I’m glad Nike put this image out as the crown jewel of Olympic Team design,” because it may act as the catalyst for another conversation that has been long overdue.

“If you showed this outfit to someone from the W.N.B.A. or women’s soccer, they would laugh in your face,” she said. “We shouldn’t have to normalize it for track and field anymore. Time’s up on that.”

Caitlin Clark looks like a natural as Indiana Fever introduce WNBA’s top draft pick

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — When Caitlin Clark walked to the dais Wednesday in Indianapolis, she looked like a natural.

The former Iowa star and WNBA’s No. 1 overall draft pick eagerly discussed the impact a new television deal could have around the league. Clark outlined her goal of helping the Indiana Fever end a seven-year playoff drought, talked about being “terrified” of her Saturday Night Live appearance, even teased Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton about attending her rival school, Iowa State.

Still, Clark made one thing clear — she feels right at home in Indiana.

“It definitely played a huge role,” she said during her introductory news conference, explaining why she opted to leave school after making two straight national championship game runs. “I was hoping Indiana got the first pick, it made my life a lot better. So I was pretty excited. I was just ready for a new challenge in my life.”

Some of what happened was expected Wednesday.

Clark received a standing ovation from her new teammates and the overflow crowd of team employees while sitting between general manager Lin Dunn, a Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer, and coach Christie Sides, who has four Final Four appearances on her resume. Clark’s parents were seated in the front row, right next to former Fever star and Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings.

And as she peered into the crowd, Clark almost certainly noticed the red T-shirts emblazoned with the words “And with the first pick in the 2024 WNBA draft Indiana Fever select Caitlin Clark.”

But the 30-minute question-and-answer session also revealed a different side of Clark.

She ditched the carefully crafted answers about her professional ambitions, which followed Clark relentlessly through her final college season. Instead, she showed a humility that could help the potentially game-changing star’s transition from the college level to the pro game.

“It’s not all about me,” Clark said. “It’s not everything I have to do and when I’ve been able to understand that, it’s allowed me to play my best. I think it’s just using your resources, asking questions, knowing everything’s not going to be perfect and giving myself a little grace. I’m definitely a perfectionist, but I’m at my best when I allow myself to have a little grace and not expect everything to go exactly how it should.”

Indiana certainly has big expectations for Clark, the greatest scorer in Division I history, after nearly 17,000 tickets were distributed for Monday night’s draft watch party at the Fever’s home court, Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Her logo 3-pointers and uncanny passes also helped draw a record 18.9 million viewers for last week’s title game against South Carolina.

That interest is expected to continue.

League officials already have announced 36 of Indiana’s 40 games will be shown on national television, Fever ticket sales have spiked and two-time defending league champ Las Vegas has moved its game against Indiana to a venue with roughly 6,000 more seats.

Not surprisingly, some of the city’s top athletes including Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, and Haliburton, have welcomed Clark to town.

“She’s one of the faces of women’s basketball and for her to be here, under the same roof, it’s really exciting for me and I think a lot of people in our organization,” Haliburton said. “I just look forward to watching her grow through the process, watching her get better and looking forward to actually being able to cheer for her now.”

Clark didn’t stick around long Wednesday.

Following the morning news conference, she and her parents headed home to Iowa. Clark is expected to return for the start of training camp as she continues to pursue her degree.

When she does return, Clark will be teaming up with forward Aliyah Boston, last year’s unanimous pick as WNBA Rookie of the Year, a combination that has Dunn, Sides and Fever fans all smiles.

Clark is expected to make her regular season debut May 14 at Connecticut and her home debut May 18 against New York.

“Win a lot of games to start, she’s going to help us with that,” Sides said, expressing the goals. “It’s incredible to have someone like her join our team. We established a great culture last year, laid a great foundation and to have someone like her and her awesome support staff, her family, added to our family, it just puts us in a whole different ballgame.”

Even if Clark’s whirlwind season still sometimes feels surreal.

“I think the biggest thing I’m trying to remember is how grateful I am to have this opportunity. You know there’s so many people who would kill to be in my shoes,” she said. “When things seem like they’re long, you’re tired and you feel like I have to do this, I have to do that, I try to remind myself how grateful I am to get these opportunities. I’m lucky to have these moments.”
