UX Research Conference Guide 2023

Whether you’re looking to level up your research skills, get inspired by experts in the field or make new friends in research - conferences are a great way to do all of it. This guide lists the user research conferences taking place in 2022. Early bird tickets with reduced prices are available for many events already.

2020 and 2021 were a difficult year for probably everyone and definitely for conference organizers. And it’s still uncertain how events in 2022 will look like. What we know is that most major conferences take place early in the year and some of them are fully online or offer a hybrid format with online and in-person participation options.

This guide focuses on pure UX research conferences and doesn’t include general UX conferences on purpose. Did we miss one? Let us know via [email protected] and we will add it.

Since most conferences are virtual and allow participation from anywhere in the world, we added information about when the main talks are happening in different time zones. Here’s what the emojis mean:

QRCA Virtual Summit πŸŽ₯

The research conference year starts with an event organized by the Qualitative Research Consultants Association. The QRCA annual conference traditionally has a strong focus on market research but covers all things qualitative research. This year the conference is split into two separate events - one fully online and the other in-person. The virtual summit is a 2-day conference with educational content, workshops and interactive discussions around the theme REconnect and REenergize.

UX360 Research Summit πŸŽ₯

UX360 Research Summit 2022 will be fully virtual, offering presentations, interactive panel discussions and 1-2-1-meeting opportunities around UX and design research. The two-day event will happen between 8am-2pm EDT (New York) / 2pm-8pm CET (Berlin) time. UX360 Research Summit was created in the context of the QUAL360 global conference series. There are reduced early-bird tickets available.

Advancing Research 2022 πŸŽ₯

The third edition of the Advancing Research (by Rosenfeld) conference was planned as a hybrid conference but will now take place fully online. The talks and panels will be streamed live and extended virtually, too. Curated by Jem Ahmed, Jamika Burge, Chris Geison, and the team from Rosenfeld Media, this event is all about advancing the research practice with this year's focus on opportunities for research practitioners & teams to enable businesses to both do good and do well. Design Research 2022 πŸŽ₯

Design Research usually takes place in Australia but is fully virtual this time. While the program isn’t released yet it will consist of 1 workshop day followed by 2 full days of conference presentations. The organizers already announced that the 2022 conference will focus on conducting design research under various conditions and with diverse groups, research operations, and positioning research within product and service teams. Note that workshop tickets have to be purchased separately from the conference ticket.

CHI22 (full conference) πŸŽ₯ πŸ“

This conference continues with a hybrid approach for their 2022 edition. There will be a web-exclusive two-day event and a hybrid event (in-person and online) this year. While the program is not yet announced, the conference around human-computer interaction annually brings together researchers from all over the world.

QRCA San Diego Conference πŸ“

The research conference year starts with an event organized by the Qualitative Research Consultants Association. The BAD conference is dedicated to behavioral science and user research and design. The TechCircus team organizes two events, one virtual-only and one in-person in London, UK. Both events will include a full day of talks and networking for anyone who is "interested in the practical application of the behavioural sciences, in order to conduct deeper, more meaningful user research and design."

#gamesUR Summit πŸŽ₯

GamesUR 2022 will happen fully virtually. There is no program announced yet, but this year’s session will be all around the theme β€œMetamorphosis” which wants to spotlight how the past few years β€œrevolutionized” games user research.

UXinsight Festival 22 πŸŽ₯ πŸ“

Europe’s largest user research conference is opening its doors again. Attendees are invited to join their in-person conference in the Netherlands or to be part of the event virtually. Besides the talks and workshops, UX Insight Festival stands out with its interactive sessions that help you make new research friends. The sixth festival focuses on Growth - either personal career growth, growing the UX research field or UX research communities.

UXRCONF by learners πŸŽ₯ πŸ“

Th 5th UXRCONF by learners is organized by the people behind UXRCollective and UXRConf in the past. They offer a hybrid event, with an in-person event in New York City, NY, and a complimentary program online. Remote tickets are free.

REOPSCONF by ResearchOps Community πŸŽ₯ πŸ“

2022 UX Research comes with a newcomer: The ResearchOps Community hosts their first own conference. They are currently looking for speakers, but the talks will be around "how ResearchOps can help address issues of bias, ethics, and legality in research; scaling the impact of research remotely; and how to transition into the field of ResearchOps." It's a hybrid event, so you can either join in person in New York, NY, or watch the talks remotely. Remote tickets are free.

Quant UX Con πŸŽ₯πŸ“

Quant UX Con describes themselves as "the first unconference dedicated to the field of Quantitative UX Research." In this "unconference," attendees will be creating the agenda at the beginning of the event. So anyone who wants to start a discussion or share about a topic related to quant UX research can claim their spot on the agenda. The event will take place both in-person in Sunnyvale, California, and online. It's is free for all participants, whether attending online or in-person.

UCD Gathering πŸŽ₯

UCD Gathering 2022 will be a 2-day fully online conference bringing together user-centered design and research practitioners worldwide. Originally it's focused on practitioners from the UK, but the virtual program allows worldwide participation. The program comes with a strong emphasis on research, accessibility, and inclusivity.

GOOD RESEARCH by Colette Kolenda πŸŽ₯ πŸ“

This week-long conference program is hosted by Colette Kolenda, Senior Manager at Spotify for Strategy, Research, Data & Ops. The whole program is focused on "digging into how to make sure you’re doing the work right. Research that matters. Research that has impact. Good Research." Remote tickets are free.

UXPA International 2022 πŸ“

The conference is organized by the UXPA, the User Experience Professionals Association that introduced World Usability Day and supports researchers and designers. There is no information about the event’s theme and program yet.

User Research London 2022 πŸŽ₯ πŸ“

User Research London could not take place in 2020 nor 2021, but the organizers promise a comeback for 2022. That means the 2020 lineup will be accompanied by an additional lineup. The program consists of workshops, talks and deep dives that are planned in-person but will be available remotely, too.

uxcon viennaπŸ“

Uxcon vienna will be an in-person event focused on UX Research & Design held in Vienna, Austria. The conference took place for the first time in 2021 and will be continued in 2022. Besides the two conference days, the Conference Pass includes participation at two workshops of your choice and a comprehensive accompanying entertainment program. There are early bird tickets already available.

Intersection Conference πŸ“

The goal of Intersection Conference is to create an event where people can share the processes and methodologies behind highly-usable technological products designed to make a positive impact on the world.

The EPIC2022 conference will be an in-person conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands. EPIC is a nonprofit organization that promotes the practices of ethnographers (e.g., user researchers, UX designers, strategists, and other roles) and invites them to its 18th yearly conference. Theme and ticket prices are not yet announced.

"CSCW is the premier venue for research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities, and networks. Bringing together top researchers and practitioners, CSCW explores the technical, social, material, and theoretical challenges of designing technology to support collaborative work and life activities." The conference will be held either fully online or in a hybrid form in Taiwan with virtual participation options.
