The Korean War which is termed as the forgotten war was a military conflict that started in June 1950 between North Korean who were supported by peoples republic of China backed by Soviet Union and South Korean with support from the United Nations and the American forces.

The war was an episode of cold war where by the United States of America and Russia were fighting ideologically behind the scenes by using South and North Korea as their battle zone. After the world war two, British and American forces set a pro-western government in the southern part of Korean Peninsula while the Soviet Union initiated a communist rule in the North. The net effect of these ideological differences was the Korean War.

The causes of the Korean War can be examined in two facets

• Ideological

Politically, the Soviet Union wanted Korea to be loyal to Russia .This was because Korea was seen as a springboard that would be used to initiate an attack on Russia. Korean being loyal to Russia was a strategy to prevent future aggression.

The major cause of the war however, was difference in ideology between South and North Korea with Russia and America behind the scene. The two Korean zones established two separate governments with different ideologies. This were the major event that initiated the conflict In Korea.

American and Soviet military occupation in North and South Korea.

The American and Soviet forces occupation in Korea divided the country on ideological basis. These differences resulted to the formation of 38 th parallel which was a border between South and North Korea. This boarder increasingly became politically contested by the two functions and attracted cross boarder raids. The situation became even worse when these cross border skirmishes escalated to open warfare when North Korean army attacked South Korea on June 1950.The two super power majorly the American and Soviet Union acted by providing support and war equipment’s to the two conflicting sides.

Role of the America and Soviet Union in armament and military support to South and NorthKorea.

The Russians backed the communist regime in North Korea with the help of Kim Il-Sung and established North Korean Peoples Army which was equipped by Russian made war equipments. In South Korea, American backed government benefited from training and support from the Americans army.

Military and strategic imbalance between North and South Korea

The America and Russia failure to withdraw their troops by the late 1948, led to tensions between the two sides. By 1949, the American had started to withdraw its troops but the Russian troops still remained in North Korea considering that Korea lay as its strategic base.

This was followed by invasion of South Korea by the North Korean army because of the military imbalance that existed in the region. This forced the American to return back and give reinforcement to South Korea which was by then over ran by North Korean Army in support of the Russian troops.

Korea, a formally a Japanese colony before the end of the Second World War, changed hands to allied powers after the defeat of Japan in the year 1948. The Americans occupied the southern part of Korea while the Soviet occupied the Northern region. Korea by this time was divided along 38 th parallel which demarked the boarder of the two governments.38 th parallel was an area of 2.5-mile that was a demilitarized zone between north and South Korea.

In June 1950, the North Korean people army attacked South Korea by crossing 38 th parallel. On June 28 th the same year Rhee who was the then leader of South Korean evacuated Seoul and ordered the bombardment of bridge across Han River to prevent North Korean forces from advancing south wards.

The inversion of South Korea forced Americans to intervene and on June 25 th 1950, United Nations in support of South Korea, jointly condemned North Korea’s action to invade the South. USSR challenged the decision and claimed that the Security Council resolution was based on the American intelligence and North Korea was not invited to the Security Council meeting which was a violation of the U.N. charter article 32.

North Korea continued its offensive utilizing both air and land invasion by use of about 231,000 military personnel. This offensive was successful in capturing significant southern territories such as Kaesong, Ongjin, chuncheon and Uijeonghu.

In this expedition, the North Korea people’s army used heavy military equipment such as 105T-34 and T-85 tanks, 150 Yak fighters and 200 artillery pieces. The South Korean forces were ill prepared for such offensive and within days they were overran by the advancing Northern army. Most of Southern forces either surrendered or joined the Northern Korean army.

In response to this aggression, the then American president Henry Truman gave an order to general Mac Arthur who was stationed in Japan to transfer the troops in Japan to combat in Korea.

The battle of Osan was the first involvement of the American army in the Korean war. The war involved a task force comprised of 540 infantry men from 24 th infantry division on July 5 th 1950.

This task force was unsuccessful in its campaign to repel the North Korean army and instead suffered a casualty of 180 soldiers of whom were either dead, wounded or taken prisoner. The task force lacked effective military equipment to fight the North Koreans T-34 and T-85 tanks. The American 24 th division suffered heavy loses and were pushed back to Taejeon.

Between August and September 1950, there was a significant escalation of conflict in Korea. This was the start of the battle of Pusan perimeter. At this battle, the American forces attempted to recapture then taken territories by the North Korean army. The United States Air force slowed North Korean advances by destroying 32 bridges.

The intense bombardment by the United States air force, made North Korean Units to fight during the nights and hide in ground tunnels during the day. The U.S. army destroyed transportation hubs and other key logistic positions which paralyzed North Korean advances.

Between October and December 1950, the Chinese entered the war on the side of the North Koreans. The United States seventh fleet was dispatched to protect Taiwan from people’s Republic of China under Mao Zedong. In 15 th October 1950, Charlie Company and 70 th Tank battalion Captured Namchonjam city and two days later Pyongyang which was the Capital of North Korea fell to the American 1 st cavalry division.

The first major offensive by China took place on 25 October by attacking the advancing U.N. forces at Sino-Korean border. Fighting on 38 th parallel happened between January and June 1951 when the U.N. command forces were ambushed by Chinese troops. The U.N. forces retreated to Suwon in the west.

On July 10 th 1951, there was a stalemate between the two warring sides which led to armistice being negotiated. The negotiation went on for the next two years. The armistice deal was reached with formation of Korean demilitarized zone ending the war. Both sides withdrew for their combat position. The U.N. was given the mandate to see a peaceful and fair resolution of the conflict in the effort to end the war. The war resulted to about 1,187,682 deaths and unprecedented destruction of property [2] .

The Korean War on the side of Americans perpetuated the Truman’s doctrine which was of the opinion that Russia was trying to influence the world with forceful communist ideology and therefore the United States of America would help any country that was under threat of communist.

The Korean conflict also brought into focus in future efforts to win communism from spreading allover the world. The United States realized that the best solution to stop the spreading of communism ideology was to be military in nature. The war also made America to recognize China as a powerful military might in Asia. Future diplomatic actions would need to take into account Chinas potential might [3] .

After the war, military assistance was provided to Philippine government, French Indochina and Taiwan with the motive to contain the spread of communism in Asia. This military assistance would extend also in Europe to country under communist threat of occupation.

Korean War, a ‘Forgotten’ Conflict That Shaped the Modern World

The Korean War has been called “the Forgotten War” in the United States, where coverage of the 1950s conflict was censored and its memory decades later is often overshadowed by World War II and the Vietnam War.

But the three-year conflict in Korea, which pitted communist and capitalist forces against each other, set the stage for decades of tension among North Korea, South Korea and the United States.

It also helped set the tone for Soviet-American rivalry during the Cold War, profoundly shaping the world we live in today, historians said.

As tensions between North Korea and the United States continue to mount amid missile tests and taunts, here is a brief guide to the Korean War and the impacts that linger more than 60 years after its end.

How did the Korean War start?

The Korean War began when North Korean troops pushed into South Korea on June 25, 1950, and it lasted until 1953. But experts said the military conflict could not be properly understood without considering its historical context.

Korea, a Japanese colony from 1910 until 1945, was occupied by the United States and the Soviet Union at the end of World War II. The United States proposed temporarily dividing the country along the 38th Parallel as a way to maintain its influence on the peninsula, which bordered Russia, said Charles K. Armstrong, a professor of Korean history at Columbia University.

“A divided Korea was something unprecedented,” he said.

But the divide lasted in part because of competing visions among Koreans for the country’s future. “Fundamentally it was a civil war, fought over issues going back into Korea’s colonial experience,” said Bruce Cumings, a professor of history at the University of Chicago.

In 1948, the American-backed, anti-communist southern administration, based in Seoul, declared itself the Republic of Korea. It was led by Syngman Rhee, who lived in exile in the United States for many years and was installed as the South Korean leader by the Office of Strategic Services, a predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency, Professor Cumings said.

Soon after, the Soviet-backed, communist northern administration, based in Pyongyang, declared itself the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Its leader was Kim Il-sung, who fought alongside communist forces during the Chinese civil war and was the grandfather of North Korea’s current dictator, Kim Jong-un.

Each regime was unstable, rejected the legitimacy of the other and considered itself to be Korea’s sole rightful ruler. Border skirmishes between the two were frequent before the Korean War began.

Who were the combatants?

The war pitted South Korea and the United States, fighting under the auspices of the United Nations, against North Korea and China.

Other nations contributed troops, too, but American forces did most of the fighting. “The South Korean Army virtually collapsed” at the start of the war, Professor Cumings said.

The Soviet Union supported North Korea at the beginning of the war, giving it arms, tanks and strategic advice. But China soon emerged as its most important ally, sending soldiers to fight in Korea as a way to keep the conflict away from its border.

The Chinese leader, Mao Zedong, also saw China’s participation in the war as a way to thank Korean Communists who fought in the Chinese civil war, Professor Cumings said.

“There was a lot of field contact between American and Chinese forces,” Professor Armstrong said. “In a sense, this was the first and only war between China and the United States, so far.”

How damaging was it?

The war devastated Korea. Historians said that between three million and four million people were killed, although firm figures have never been produced, particularly by the North Korean government. As many as 70 percent of the dead may have been civilians.

Destruction was particularly acute in the North, which was subjected to years of American bombing, including with napalm. Roughly 25 percent of its prewar population was killed, Professor Cumings said, and many of the survivors lived underground by the war’s end.

“North Korea was flattened,” he said. “The North Koreans see the American bombing as a Holocaust, and every child is taught about it.”

Damage was also widespread in South Korea, where Seoul changed hands four times. But most combat took place in the northern or central parts of the peninsula around the current Demilitarized Zone, which divides the countries, Professor Cumings said.

How did it end?

Technically, the Korean War did not end.

The fighting stopped when North Korea, China and the United States reached an armistice in 1953. But South Korea did not agree to the armistice, and no formal peace treaty was ever signed.

“There is still a technical state of war between the combatants,” Professor Cumings said.

Neither North nor South Korea had achieved its goal: the destruction of the opposing regime and reunification of the divided peninsula.

Since 1953 there has been an uneasy coexistence between North and South Korea, which hosts over 20,000 American troops. At one time hundreds of American nuclear weapons were based there.

“It was from the Korean War onward that we had a permanent, global American military presence that we had never had before,” Professor Armstrong said. Other countries that host American troops include Qatar, Japan, Italy and Germany. “It was a real turning point for America’s global role.”

In the decades after the war, South Korea transformed into an economic powerhouse. Professor Cumings said many of its citizens now know little about the conflict and have “a fatalistic orientation” toward the economically isolated North.

Meanwhile, North Korea became “the world’s most amazing garrison state with the fourth largest army in the world.”

“Its generals are still fighting the war,” Professor Cumings said. “For them it has never ended.”

Introduction

According to Kim (2007), the Korean Wave can be applied to many aspects, aside from making a more profitable economy for the country. The term Korean Wave gives it a generic definition which symbolized the “Korean-ness” of their cultural products, but more importantly, the nationalistic sentiment that made Korea a big hit not just in Asia, but the rest of the world. Aside from the popularity of the K-pop groups, the Korean cultural products became global success due to their uniqueness and fame (Kim, 2007). Hyun-key Kim (2013, p.135) stated that the term “Korean Wave” or otherwise known as “hallyu” in Korean dialect was coined by the Chinese media towards the end millennium as a description of the unexpected outpour in the popularity of Korean entertainment products in mainland China. The Korean Wave has become widely popular due to the hit Korean television dramas that are being shown worldwide. The Korean Wave has flooded majority of Asian countries including China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, and Japan during the latter part of the 1990s (Cho, 2011, p.385). The Korean television dramas became supernatural phenomena which started in China. The first Korean drama which was broadcasted regionally by the China Central Television (CCTV) is “What is Love All About?” which was first seen in 1997. This Korean drama became an instant hit. Aside from these, the K-pop groups became overly popular in the international scene. Several members of the all-male and all-female singing groups became instant idols for the present youth as they imitate their fashion, make-up, hairstyle and movements. Thesis Statement: The Korean Wave has benefited the K-pop groups through its worldwide influence among the present youth by making it a globalized culture in terms of the way they look, think, speak and move.

Aside from the Korean dramas, the Korean pop music has become a craze among young people that it was able to influence sexuality and globalism. This popular entertainment product which initiated the Korean Wave is the Korean pop music, commonly known as “K-pop” was influenced by the Korean shamanistic ritual called “icut” (Hyun-key Kim 2013, p.143). It did not come as a surprise that Korea was able to produce talented young singing and dancing pop artists which later on influenced the modern-day youth in the way the look, think, speak and move. These songs and dances became an integral part of the daily lives as part of the Korean national culture. This can be illustrated after seeing many Korean artists in music videos, who are dressed provocatively while they perform their songs. The audience is overly influenced by the K-pop artists that they imitate the way they look, without any due regard if the clothes they wear may suggest sexuality. Aside from the benefits to Korean national economy, the K-pop artists or K-pop groups stand to benefit from the Korean wave due to their worldwide popularity. Since these groups became famous all over the world, the Korean economy had tremendously flourished when majority of their followers from various parts of the globe want to use Korean products. These products include cosmetics, apparel, record albums, television dramas and food stuff. The love for the K-pop groups became the major factor which boosted the exports of Korean products and tourism of the country. In order to promote Korean talents, entertainment agencies in Korea have identified the internet as one of the effective means to spread K-pop in a global perspective. Some of the performances of these K-pop groups were initially uploaded in the popular website “Youtube”. Due to the powerful influence of social media, in spite of the language barrier, many young people watch the performances of these K-pop groups and copy they look, speak and act. Korean agencies continuously look for ways to maintain the popularity of the singing male and female groups. These Korean promoters were able to attract the worldwide audience by taking into account two considerations when launching songs to the followers. The marketability of the songs was dependent on two ideas: 1) sells sex and; 2.) the songs should be written partly in English (Hyun-key Kim 2013, p.144). The K-pop culture has influenced young people on the way they dress, the clothes they were, make-up, hairstyle and how they move. The K-pop groups emphasizes on sexuality by making both the male and female performers who perform sexy dance routines. Based on the Guinness Book of World Records, the K-pop stars or Korean wave artists are the most photographed celebrities all over the world since their pictures have appeared at least 500 million times in the commercial scene (Hyun-key Kim 2013, p.144). It is also interesting to note that these K-pop groups have dominated the solo artists. Most K-pop groups have more than five members, as compared to the other Western singing groups having at least five members only. Another noteworthy factor is that K-pop culture has more Western influence than the Korean television dramas. Most of the songs produced for the K-pop groups have patterned after the Western albums. Yoshida (2009, p.341) argued that the East Asian Pop Culture or Korean Wave focuses not only on the economic, socio-political and cultural effects of the circulation of Korean television dramas within the region. In fact, there are other specific issues such as gender identity, perception of colonial relations, and nationalistic attitude toward cultural exchanges that have been affected after the emergence of the Korean Wave. The Korean wave has far reaching effects in terms of national economy, the cultural unity and exchange among Asians, globalized culture and its power over the future of globalization. Over the last decade, East Asia has become the regional market where the Korean pop culture earned substantial profits before making its way into the global market (Cho, 2011, p.387). East Asia became the destination to highlight the superiority of Korean pop culture and the setting where Koreans are allowed the opportunity to accomplish their national interests. The cultural nationalist approach supplied such understanding after overstressing the influence of the Korean wave. The significant role of traditional values and cultural legacy brought about by the Korean Wave and by attributing its success to Korean capability to influence other Western countries.

The growth of the Korean Wave is a living testimony that people in Asia have rejected the American pop culture. The Korean pop music has become a craze among young people that it was able to influence sexuality and globalism. With the emergence of the K-pop groups, the Asians have explored other flavors of music and no longer made the Western culture as the primary reference point among pop group cultures. These K-pop groups have influenced the youth of today in several means by changing the way they look, speak, think and act. In fact, the Western mass cultural productions have become just one of the several choices that are available to the youth from Asian countries (Cho, 2011). The popularity of the Korean Wave became the means of transnational cultural exchange for the Korean products to be exported globally (Kim, 2007). It is also an indication that the rise of Korea at the expense of other neighboring Asian countries is a positive indicator of the growing openness and willingness to embrace other cultures. The Korean Wave has transformed to become the product of national culture that has boosted the overall diversity and the characteristic of East Asian popular culture (Hyun-key Kim 2013, p.144). The highly acclaimed Korean Wave only proves that the Koreans have the ability to influence not just their Asian neighbors, but also the rest of the world (Cho, 2011, p.390). The Korean Wave is a manifestation that global culture is aware of other regional tastes. Other countries learned to adopt the Korean culture among young people within the way they dress, the clothes they were, make-up, hairstyle and how they move. To conclude, the Korean Wave is advantageous for K-pop groups because the youth of today had considered them as their modern-day idols.

North Korea's U.N. ambassador says US-led sanctions monitoring groups will fail

S EOUL (Reuters) - U.S.-led efforts to form new groups monitoring sanctions on North Korea will fail, the country's U.N. envoy said on Sunday according to state media KCNA carrying his statement.

Ambassador Kim Song made the comment in response to a joint statement the U.S. and its allies issued this week calling to continue the work of a U.N. panel of experts monitoring longstanding U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang for its nuclear weapons and missile programs.

Earlier this year, Russia vetoed the annual renewal of a panel of experts amid U.S.-led accusations that North Korea has transferred weapons to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine.

Even if the hostile forces form a second or a third panel of experts, they will "self-destruct," Kim was quoted as saying by KCNA.

Last month, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield visited the Demilitarized Zone, a heavily fortified border between the two Koreas, which remain technically at war and urged Russia and China to stop rewarding North Korea for its bad behaviour.

Her trip came after Russia rejected the annual renewal of the multinational panel of experts that has over the past 15 years monitored the implementation of U.N. sanctions aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

Trinity College of Arts & Sciences is home to 80 percent of Duke's undergraduate student body and will soon welcome another graduating class as part of our esteemed alumni. Among the graduates are dancers, researchers student organization presidents and this year's student commencement speaker, Economics major and art history minor  Zahra Hassan .

Duke's main commencement ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 12, and many departments and programs will host their own ceremonies throughout the weekend. To find more information about the various events taking place for graduating seniors and their families, visit Duke's Commencement website .

Interdisciplinary By Design

Interdisciplinary education is baked into the academic experience of Trinity students. With over 35 departments and programs representing arts, humanities and sciences, Trinity students often forge their own paths, merging together multiple majors, minors and certificates to create unique academic experiences. These oftentimes have a community-focused aim, and their participation in local organizations, student groups and co-curricular activities can be just as impactful to their academic experience as their coursework. 

Major in International Comparative Studies, minor in Political Science and a certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Suzie Choi is a senior from Seoul, Korea, who in addition to ICS and Political Science has served as the Vice President of the Social Impact Committee at Business Oriented Women (BOW), as the Co-Vice President of Duke’s UNICEF-Durham Affairs Committee, as a I&E Student Fellow and as a flutist at the Duke Flute Studio.

"One thing I learned in these four years is that you shouldn’t give up on something you want to do because of some immediate midterms, or feel bad about not putting in your best effort because you don’t have enough time. Pursue everything. But try your best with your best capability now," Choi said.

Maya Ghanem

Major in International Comparative Studies and minor in Religious Studies

A leader of the queer Muslim student group, Jummah 4 All, Maya Ghanem’s research is grounded in queer Muslim studies and sexual ethics among Muslim authorities. During their time at Duke, Ghanem has also worked as a programming coordinator at Duke Arts and served as the Justice Director of the Undergraduate Environmental Union, a hub for environmental programming, action and collaboration at Duke.

"I felt very supported in my ICS Senior Seminar class while I wrote my honors thesis on Queer Muslim Environmental Futurisms. Throughout the year, my brain was struggling to map all the ideas I had in my head. Being in a class with such wonderful peers and advisors helped me organize my thoughts and produce something reflective of my research and experiences," said Ghanem.

The most valuable lesson I learned at Duke was to pursue knowledge for its own sake, not just for grades. My most fulfilling classes were those I chose out of genuine interest. Isabel Siebrecht, Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies Ambassador

Christina Lewis

Major in Religious Studies and minors in Biology and Chemistry

Christina Lewis used her honors project on alternative healing practices to tie together her academic interests and explore ways in which she, a future clinician, might best serve her patients.

“I think that it’s important to acknowledge that health extends beyond the biochemistry of the body,” said Lewis. “A person’s relationship to their health is influenced by a variety of factors — their environment, their culture, their family and their beliefs."

Parinay Gupta

Majors in Economics and Mathematics and minor in Cinematic Arts

For Parinay Gupta, it was his Writing 101 course, Gender and Sexuality in Latin American Films, that inspired him to minor in Cinematic Arts.

“Delving into the analysis of gender representation in Latin American cinema, I became increasingly intrigued by the creative processes that transpired behind the camera and shaped the narratives presented on screen," he said.

Cate Knothe

Majors in German and Cinematic Arts and minor in Chemistry

Having studied German in high school, the cinephile came to Duke thinking she would fulfill her language credits and move on, but she simply fell in love with the department. 

“There’s a linkage between the humanities and STEM that I wanted to explore in college, and I started to think that maybe Duke was the perfect place where I could have this really thorough liberal arts education while following all of my different passions.”

Isa Mellody

Major in Theater Studies and minors in Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies and Computer Science

Isa Mellody spent her senior year developing rules for the world she built for her distinction project,  Do I Know You?,  an original play written under the direction of Professor Neal Bell.

In addition to her distinction project, she is a recipient of the department’s 2024 John M. Clum Distinguished Theater Studies Graduate Award and the Reynolds Price Award.

Staci Grimes

Major in Sociology with a certificate in Documentary Studies

Duke senior Staci Grimes is the winner of the 2024 Julia Harper Day Award for Documentary Studies. 

Grimes, who is from the Bronx in New York City, describes themselves as a queer, Black, first-generation college student whose documentary work fuses humanities research and digital media creation. Their aim is to explore the reflexive relationship between social theory and practice.

Elaijah Lapay

Major in Migrant Health and Healthcare through Program II

For his leadership and selfless services to others, Elaijah Lapay recently joined two others at Duke in receiving the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, given annually by the Office of the Provost.

Tess Redman

Major in Psychology and minors in Creative Writing and Spanish

Tess Redman received a Benenson Award to develop her play that delves into the journey of a type 1 diabetic in an experimental therapy program. 

Seniors Pursuing Research

Research isn’t only for faculty or graduate students; undergrads can begin participating in research in a multitude of ways from as early as their first year at Duke. Whether part of their class projects or setting out on their own projects, research is a large part of what makes this senior class impressive.

Sabrina Sebastian-San Miguel

Major in Cultural Anthropology

Sebastian-San Miguel has been involved in disability and disability studies advocacy efforts on campus since her second year at Duke but found few formal curricular opportunities to do so.

Joining the Cultural Anthropology course "Bodies at Work" gave her a chance to incorporate her interest in researching disability into her coursework.

Ben Sperber

Major in Disability and Despair through Program II

Sperber would like people to stop talking about cures. His thesis on the flawed tropes of healing and the human context of suicidality, argues that illness, disability and despair aren’t always things to be simply overcome and cured.

“There is this idea that diseases should be eradicated,” he said. Using eating disorders as a specific example, he continued: “It’s not just something you ‘go through’.”

Major in Neuroscience and minors in Computer Science and Visual Media Studies

Athena Yao has been interested in neuroscience from the moment she picked up a book in her high school library addressing the science of stress and motivation.

After witnessing the impacts Alzheimer’s had on her grandfather and family, she came to Duke with a determined interest in memory and neurodegenerative diseases.

“I was trying to figure out the source of my own stress and how I could develop a better sense of control over my life,” she shares. “It was fascinating to learn about the biological basis of emotion and behavior.”

Amber Smith

Major in Sociology and minor in Global Health

In high school, Amber Smith planned to become a physician. She had no intention of studying Sociology before coming to Duke, but after one class, she became passionate about medical sociology. 

“I learned about all the structures in place that lead to differential health outcomes, and how there’s a lot more to healthcare and health outcomes than just presenting oneself at a clinic.”

Smith’s fascination with the social determinants of health led to her senior thesis,  Zip Code Matters: A Social Network Analysis of U.S. State-Based Abortion Care Access Over Time .
