- World Food Day is an annual call to action by the United Nations on 16 October each year.
- Almost one in ten people globally are undernourished, and more than 3 billion can’t afford a healthy diet, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
- Conflict, climate change and rising prices are all contributing to growing food insecurity around the world.
- The FAO says governments should re-evaluate their support to agriculture to help improve sustainable production of more nutritious foods.
World Food Day, held this year on 16 October, is an annual reminder that food insecurity and malnourishment remain widespread and are poised to worsen thanks to a range of ongoing threats, including climate change, inflation, geopolitical conflict, and more. Here's what to know about World Food Day and why it's more important than ever.
Two billion people in the world currently suffer from malnutrition and according to some estimates, we need 60% more food to feed the global population by 2050. Yet the agricultural sector is ill-equipped to meet this demand: 700 million of its workers currently live in poverty, and it is already responsible for 70% of the world’s water consumption and 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
New technologies could help our food systems become more sustainable and efficient, but unfortunately the agricultural sector has fallen behind other sectors in terms of technology adoption.
Launched in 2018, the Forum’s Innovation with a Purpose Platform is a large-scale partnership that facilitates the adoption of new technologies and other innovations to transform the way we produce, distribute and consume our food.
With research, increasing investments in new agriculture technologies and the integration of local and regional initiatives aimed at enhancing food security, the platform is working with over 50 partner institutions and 1,000 leaders around the world to leverage emerging technologies to make our food systems more sustainable, inclusive and efficient.

What is World Food Day and how did it get started?
World Food Day is marked on 16 October each year. It commemorates the founding of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Hundreds of events and outreach activities around the world bring together governments, businesses, the public and the media to promote awareness and action for those suffering from hunger.
What is this year's World Food Day theme?
This year’s theme is ‘Leave NO ONE behind’ . The FAO says access to, and availability of, nutritious food is being increasingly impeded by the current global challenges. The problem is particularly acute for the 80% of people classified as ‘extreme poor’ who live in rural areas. They are the hardest hit by human-made and natural disasters. Some are also marginalized due to gender and ethnic origin.
Looking ahead to World Food Day the FAO says: “In the face of global crises, global solutions are needed more than ever. By aiming for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, we can transform agrifood systems and build forward better by implementing sustainable and holistic solutions that consider development in the long term, inclusive economic growth, and greater resilience.”
Why is World Food Day Important?
The human statistics are stark. Almost one in 10 people in the world are undernourished, according to the United Nations. Globally, around one in five children under the age of five were stunted in 2020, many as a result of inadequate nutrition. While a fifth of people in Africa faced hunger last year.
Projections suggest that 670 million people - 8% of the world’s population - will still be facing hunger in 2030.
The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 report , says world hunger rose last year. It estimates that as many as 828 million people globally were affected by hunger in 2021. It says this reflects “exacerbated inequalities across and within countries due to an unequal pattern of economic recovery among countries and unrecovered income losses among those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The FAO also says projections suggest that 670 million people will still be facing hunger in 2030. That’s 8% of the world’s population - and the same number as when its 2030 Agenda was launched in 2015 - and despite the UN’s own Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ‘zero hunger’ by the end of this decade.
What is food insecurity and why is it growing?
The UN defines food security as when a person has “the physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”. The FAO report says 2.3 billion people globally were moderately or severely food insecure in 2021 - while 11.7% of the world’s population faced food insecurity at severe levels, a growing proportion reflecting a deteriorating situation. More than three billion people worldwide were unable to afford a healthy diet in 2020.
The UN says rising inflation, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts such as the one in Ukraine, have also caused dangerous food shortages for the world’s poorest people. It says Ukraine and the Russian Federation supply 30% and 20% of global wheat and maize exports respectively , as well as being leading exporters of fertilizers. At least 50 countries import around a third of their wheat from them, with many African and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) importing as much as 50%. The UN says the conflict has caused a sudden and sharp reduction in exports from Ukraine.
What is being done to tackle food insecurity and poor nutrition?
The FAO says now is the time for governments to re-evaluate their support to food and agriculture. It says globally this totalled an average of almost $630 billion per year from 2013-2018. However, the FAO says “the lion’s share of it is targeted to farmers individually, through trade and market policies and fiscal subsidies largely tied to production. Not only is much of this support market distorting, but it is not reaching many farmers, hurts the environment and does not promote the production of nutritious foods.”
The organization also points out that trade and market interventions can undermine the affordability and availability of nutritious, healthy foods. In many countries, subsidies focus on staple foods thereby discouraging less subsidized commodities such as fruit, vegetables and pulses. The FAO is therefore calling on public support to be repurposed to help people access more affordable nutritious foods.
The World Economic Forum estimates that 60% more food will be needed to feed the world by 2050 . However, the global agricultural sector is ill-equipped to meet this demand. That’s why the Forum launched its Innovation with a Purpose platform in 2018. It’s a large-scale partnership that facilitates the adoption of new technologies and other innovations to transform the way we produce, distribute and consume our food. The platform is working with more than 50 partner institutions and 1,000 leaders around the world to leverage emerging technologies to make our food systems more sustainable, inclusive and efficient.

Statement by President Joe Biden on World Food Day
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to ending hunger and malnutrition—creating a world in which no child has to go to bed hungry, no parent has to worry about how to feed their family, and no one has to face food insecurity.
The need for action has never been greater. This year, the world is facing an unprecedented level of food insecurity and humanitarian crises, worsened by the impacts of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on global food supplies. More than 300 million people are unable to access clean water, emergency medicine, shelter, and food without assistance. More than 100 million are forcibly displaced. And hundreds of millions more are experiencing hunger.
The United States will continue to step up and respond to this crisis. This year alone, we’ve committed over $9 billion in lifesaving humanitarian assistance to address growing needs here at home and around the world. Last month, at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, I also reaffirmed our commitment to tackling the devasting threat of hunger and diet-related disease in the United States—a threat that hits vulnerable communities hardest and is being compounded by other challenges, like COVID-19 and the climate crisis.
But food insecurity is a global challenge that requires a global solution. We must come together to support those who need it most. At the United Nations in May, the United States—joined by more than 100 other countries—launched the UN Roadmap for Global Food Security, which will strengthen global agriculture markets and meet the nutrition needs of millions. In September, the United States also convened a Global Food Security Summit on the margins of the UN General Assembly with partners around the world to renew our commitment to acting with urgency and responding with resolve to the growing food crisis.
Today, and every day, I am deeply grateful to people around the world who are doing their part to fight hunger—from holding food drives, innovating new agriculture solutions, to raising awareness of this growing challenge. We stand with you and will continue to act with urgency to get through this crisis and build a stronger, more sustainable food system for the future—the health, wellbeing, and stability of our world depends on it.

World Food Day: Innovate and produce more to eat, using less water
Water is essential to produce food so it is no surprise to hear that a current global shortage threatens to push more vulnerable people into hunger. A frightening prospect, when you consider that more than 700 million already have too little to eat today.
Ahead of World Food Day, observed on 16 October, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO ) has shared information about the latest technical innovations that countries can implement to produce the food that they need.
With more, here’s FAO’s Deputy Director-General, Maria Helena Semedo, who’s been speaking to UN News’s Dominika Tomaszewska-Mortimer.

Good morning everyone!
I am mesmerized to have such a lovely audience at this hour of the day. I am (XYZ) and today I am here to present my thoughts on “World Food Day” which we celebrate every year on the 16th of October.
Hunger! What is hunger? a dietary need integral to human survival, an instinct that causes the rise and fall of the entire mankind. The food chain is the best example that highlights the importance of energy generation, and transformation among species and plants. In psychological terms, the main goal of living among every creature from microbes to homo-sapiens is food security. History of evolution has witnessed this necessity of food and space among species which led to the occupancy of the entire biosphere. Therefore hunting was one of the primitive activities observed in omnivorous or carnivorous animals.
Food scarcity is the most pathetic consequence of a crisis such as war, natural phenomenon, or disaster. Lack of food sufficiency and malnutrition are two vital issues faced by governments of both developed and developing countries.
Every year around 828 million people suffer from malnutrition. Among these 149 million are children below the age group of 5. Almost 45 million children are estimated to be wasted and 38.9 million are obese. Nearly 45% of deaths of children are caused due to undernutrition. Logically food gears the economy in two-fold ways, firstly it owes a commercial value as a product, and secondly, without its consumption, no human would be left with any strength to work for a running household. This is how food and health go hand in hand and builds a plethora of socio-economic development.
The stagnant economy at both micro and macro level is the devastating influence of the pandemic in the past two years. Price inflation had a generous contribution in building the gaps between haves and have-nots. Change in the climatic pattern due to global warming has further affected the figures for food production in different seasons. Inconsistency in food accessibility and availability are two immediate effects of ecological imbalance. According to the global context, approximately 16% of interruption is observed in crop production due to sudden changes in climatic temperature. Rather than climate, technology, and the transformation of agricultural land into industrial property are other two factors influencing food security.
Population size is also soaring upward that not only creates irresistible demand for food but also gearing technological innovations. In return, the natural conditions for plantations, cultivation, and animal husbandry are getting severely hampered. Extinction of flora and fauna along with poor life expectancy are some precarious outcomes of the exploitation of resources and technology.
Some statistical analysis suggests that 99% of undernourished people reside in developing countries, while 60% of women in the world suffer from hunger. Over 20 million infants are born underweight due to malnutrition during pregnancy in the mother. The majority of deaths among babies are caused due to imbalance of diet or ravenousness in the mother.
In this circumstance, I feel that “Leave no one behind” is the perfect theme for “World Food Day 2022”. No individual should sleep empty stomach is the vital goal of “World Food Day”. Sustainability is an eminent approach to reducing human suffering from food shortages. Leaving a single individual behind tends to break the natural chain of equivalence. Proper climate, environmental security, food production management, improvement of nutritional value, and an effective lifestyle together can lead to setting up sustainable holistic changes.
The “World Food Day 2022” believes in taking actionable measures together to secure the world from the food crisis. Food, peace, nutrition, and equality are basic rights of people which can be restored by the collective operation of “government, private sectors, civil society, and individuals”. Thematic analysis of “World Food Day” focuses on eradicating hunger, malnutrition, and food unavailability by the end of 2030.
Food resembles diversity and cultural heterogeneity beyond geopolitical boundaries. It symbolizes a sense of unity, tradition, and uniqueness of taste and choices. Thus, let’s come together to preserve and protect the delight of living.
Thank You, everyone, for bearing with me for such a long time. I hope my words will bring forth a constructive overlook among all of us.

The Secretary-General
Message on world food day, 16 october 2022.
World Food Day 2022 comes at a challenging moment for global food security.
The number of people affected by hunger has more than doubled in the past three years.
Almost a million people are living in famine conditions, with starvation and death a daily reality.
A staggering 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet.
The most vulnerable communities are being battered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, environmental degradation, conflict, and deepening inequalities.
The war in Ukraine has accelerated the rise in food and fertilizer and energy prices.
But we can reverse all these trends, if we act together.
There is enough food for everyone in our world this year. But farmers need to urgently access fertilizers at reasonable cost to ensure enough food next year.
The theme of this year’s World Food Day is to “Leave no one behind. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.”
Governments, scientists, the private sector and civil society need to work together to make nutritious diets available and affordable for all.
