Table of Contents

Human Resources (HR) is a fascinating subject to study. However, things get a little difficult for Human Resources Management (HRM) students, when they are required to generate some engaging human resources research topics. This is because the topics they choose should be distinctive and provide adequate scope for significant research and analysis.

Since many students experience difficulties with identifying an ideal topic for their HR research papers, in this blog, we have listed 100 outstanding HR research paper topics and titles as suggested by our experts. If you are wondering how to choose a good human resources research topic, then read this blog. Here, you will get amazing ideas for your HR research paper writing.

Understand How to Select a Human Resources Research Topic

Generally, the topic that you pick will play a significant role in the success of your research paper. So, when it comes to writing a human resources research paper, first, make sure to pick an ideal topic by following these steps.

Determine your area of interest

In the beginning, put some effort into identifying the human resources research area that you have strong knowledge and interest in. Working on a research topic from a passionate area or theme will help you conduct research with a lot of excitement and satisfaction. The HR research areas that you may consider are recruitment and selection, workplace compliance and safety, risk management, career development, etc.

Conduct a Preliminary Search and Gather Ideas

After finding out your field of interest, conduct a basic search and gather unique human resources research ideas. To collect research topics, you may read the latest credible materials such as magazines, journals, and published research papers that are relevant to the theme you have selected.

Narrow down the list

Once you have collected various human resources research titles, analyze them all and find out whether they have a good research scope and are feasible to complete the research process before the deadline. Never pick HR research topics that have limited or no research scope. Also, narrow down the list by ignoring the research topics that are already discussed and the ones with fewer sources for references.

Perform analysis

Analyze all the shortlisted research ideas and pick a topic that is unique, researchable, and contains a lot of sources and facts to prove a thesis statement. Most importantly, the topic that you give preference should match your university guidelines and align with your needs. Furthermore, the topic you select should allow you to achieve your goal.

Consult with your supervisor

Once you have selected a topic for your human resources research paper, discuss it with your supervisor and get their approval for the topic. By using their experience and subject knowledge, they will share some insights on whether the topic you have chosen will help you create wonders or not.

Roughly 6 in 10 employees (57 percent) at mid- and large-sized U.S. companies are not confident they will be able to retire at the federal retirement age, typically between 65 to 67, according to a survey of 1,500 full-time U.S. workers by Nuveen, a subsidiary of TIAA. And just 3 in 10 employees strongly agree that they are satisfied with their retirement plan.

The findings demonstrate that “there is clearly more work to be done in ensuring that employer benefits, especially retirement plans, effectively meet the needs of diverse employee populations, often with varying priorities,” said Brendan McCarthy, head of retirement investing at Nuveen.

The data is the latest sign of employee concerns over their retirement readiness and preparedness, as well as the latest to indicate that traditional employer-sponsored retirement benefits are not going far enough.

We rounded up more recent news about the state of retirement from SHRM Online .

Employees’ ‘Magic Number’ For Retirement Hits All-Time High, But Savings Lag

Employees think they need much more money to have a comfortable retirement than they did just a few years ago. But they are a long way off from reaching their goal.

U.S. residents’ “magic number” for retirement has surged to an all-time high—rising much faster than the rate of inflation, which currently hovers just above 3 percent, according to new data this week from Northwestern Mutual. On average, U.S. adults now believe they will need $1.46 million to retire comfortably, a 15 percent jump over the $1.27 million reported last year and a whopping 53 percent surge from the $951,000 target they reported in 2020.

By generation, both Generation Z and Millennials expect to need more than $1.6 million to retire comfortably. High-net-worth individuals—those with more than $1 million in investable assets—said they’ll need nearly $4 million.

Although workers acknowledge they need a greater amount of money saved, actually saving for retirement is another story.

The average amount that U.S. adults have saved for retirement is just $88,400, according to Northwestern Mutual’s survey of 4,588 U.S. adults—slightly lower than the $89,300 in 2023 and much lower than the five-year peak of $98,800 in 2021, according to Northwestern Mutual. It also means there is a $1.37 million gap between the average employee’s retirement goal and current savings. Baby Boomers on average have $120,300 saved for retirement, Gen X employees have about $108,600 saved, Millennials have $62,600 and Gen Z has $22,800.

There’s a Gender Gap in Retirement Readiness

Research from the Nationwide Retirement Institute (NRI) reveals a gender disparity in retirement confidence and readiness among current U.S. workplace savers as more women than men report challenges.

NRI’s survey of 1,200 employer-sponsored retirement plan participants found that 1 in 4 women (23 percent) feel they’re “on the wrong track” for retirement, versus 15 percent of men. Additionally, 41 percent of women hold a negative or neutral outlook on their retirement planning, compared to just 29 percent of men. This gender disparity is further demonstrated by the fact that women are less likely than men to have reached key savings milestones such as saving enough for an emergency fund or adjusting their retirement investment allocations.

Although women are participating in employer-sponsored retirement plans alongside their male counterparts, they’re “facing a variety of challenges that can make navigating their retirement journey more complex," said Cathy Marasco, leader of protected retirement for Nationwide Retirement Solutions.

Some Signs of Progress

Despite some negative news about retirement savings, a recent Bank of America report found some positive news regarding retirement—perhaps an early sign that employees are beginning to feel more confident about their retirement savings. Bank of America (BoA) found that 401(k) account balances rose 15 percent year-over-year to an average of $86,280 in 2023 (up from $75,045 at the end of 2022), while health savings accounts balances rose 11 percent in 2023 to an average of $4,380 (up from $3,930 in 2022).

Higher contributions from employees were among the main reasons for the increases.

Nearly 18 percent of 401(k) plan participants increased their contribution rates last quarter in particular, up from just over 9 percent who did so in the third quarter of 2023. The average 401(k) contribution rate in the fourth quarter was 6.5 percent, up slightly from the 6.4 percent average at the end of the fourth quarter in 2022.

Meanwhile, 37 percent of health savings account holders contributed more than they withdrew in 2023.

The BoA report may indicate that economic pressures are turning around, said Lisa Margeson, managing director of retirement research and insights at BoA.

“We’re currently seeing positive broader economic signs, such as inflation steadily declining and the job market accelerating, so we’re hopeful this report is an early signal that Americans are also feeling more confident about their retirement savings,” she said. “With more employees increasing their 401(k) contribution rates, this data suggests we could be making a positive turn.”

Transformations That Work

  • Michael Mankins
  • Patrick Litre

research topics hr

More than a third of large organizations have some type of transformation program underway at any given time, and many launch one major change initiative after another. Though they kick off with a lot of fanfare, most of these efforts fail to deliver. Only 12% produce lasting results, and that figure hasn’t budged in the past two decades, despite everything we’ve learned over the years about how to lead change.

Clearly, businesses need a new model for transformation. In this article the authors present one based on research with dozens of leading companies that have defied the odds, such as Ford, Dell, Amgen, T-Mobile, Adobe, and Virgin Australia. The successful programs, the authors found, employed six critical practices: treating transformation as a continuous process; building it into the company’s operating rhythm; explicitly managing organizational energy; using aspirations, not benchmarks, to set goals; driving change from the middle of the organization out; and tapping significant external capital to fund the effort from the start.

Lessons from companies that are defying the odds

Idea in Brief

The problem.

Although companies frequently engage in transformation initiatives, few are actually transformative. Research indicates that only 12% of major change programs produce lasting results.

Why It Happens

Leaders are increasingly content with incremental improvements. As a result, they experience fewer outright failures but equally fewer real transformations.

The Solution

To deliver, change programs must treat transformation as a continuous process, build it into the company’s operating rhythm, explicitly manage organizational energy, state aspirations rather than set targets, drive change from the middle out, and be funded by serious capital investments.

Nearly every major corporation has embarked on some sort of transformation in recent years. By our estimates, at any given time more than a third of large organizations have a transformation program underway. When asked, roughly 50% of CEOs we’ve interviewed report that their company has undertaken two or more major change efforts within the past five years, with nearly 20% reporting three or more.

Energy Smart Appliances: launch of an EU Code of Conduct for interoperability

First 10 manufacturers commit to the EU Code of Conduct which aims to ensure interoperability of home appliances. This would contribute to a greater demand-side flexibility of households and help achieve a more stable and optimised power grid.

Image of a set of home appliances

As renewables’ penetration renders the energy supply in the EU increasingly decentralised and reliant on variable resources, demand-side flexibility offered by households gains importance for ensuring the development and operation of the power grid at lowest costs for consumers.

Energy smart appliances (ESA) in homes enable consumers to shift electricity use depending on the preferences and other parameters, contributing to the stability of the power grid, or potentially lowering the electricity bill of the household. An example is running a heat pump or turning on a dishwasher when renewable generation is most abundant, whilst still delivering the service expected by the consumer (e.g. certain minimum temperatures, or to finish a wash cycle before a certain time).

Any energy control unit can usually manage automatically the energy consumption of an ESA. Unlike non-interoperable appliances, which have specific control systems and services depending on their manufacturers, interoperable ESA should offer common services and exchange the same information to enable them. These will allow for instance enabling a flexible start of a device or simply limiting its consumption regardless of the manufacturer.

To bring about cross-brand interoperability of widely used ESA, the JRC and the Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy developed a Code of Conduct (CoC) together with manufacturers.  This voluntary initiative aims to increase the number of interoperable energy smart appliances placed on the EU market.

The objective of the Code of Conduct is to define common demand flexibility services and the information that needs to be exchanged to enable them, at a semantic level that can work even where different technical communication protocols are used by manufacturers.

Product manufacturers (from the products in scope of this version), industry associations, NGOs, academia, and Member States were all involved in the process of creating this first version of the Code of Conduct. While the commitment is taken by the manufacturers of the products in scope, other relevant actors of the energy system are asked to acknowledge this Code of Conduct.

This first version of the Code of Conduct covers a range of appliances that have an energy label:

  • white goods: washing machines, tumble driers, washer-driers, dishwashers;
  • heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), including heat pumps and water heating.

It also includes the following “use cases”:

  • flexible start
  • power consumption monitoring
  • limitation of power consumption
  • incentive table-based power consumption management
  • manual operation (provision of necessary information in case of user driven manual operation of ESA)

At the time of the launch, we have received the commitment of 10 companies producing appliances in the scope of this first version, namely Arçelik, Clivet, Daikin, Electrolux, Miele, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Vaillant Group, Vestel and Viessmann . The manufacturers have committed to develop interoperable connected products within a year . In addition, a Home Energy Management System manufacturer, GEO, has committed to support compliant ESA through their products.

Besides being beneficial for consumers, products that comply with the Code of Conduct would ultimately help several objectives through the increase of demand side flexibility, such as to improving the environmental impact of energy use over the whole energy system, contributing to grid stability and security of supply, and economical optimisation.

U.S. Department of Energy Announces $20 Million to Develop Cost-Effective, Highly Accurate Hydrogen Detection and Quantification Technologies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced up to $20 million in funding to support the development of innovative approaches for hydrogen gas emissions detection and quantification. Managed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), this initiative supports President Biden’s whole-of-government approach to accelerating the deployment of clean hydrogen. The focus of this new ARPA-E effort is on detecting emissions throughout the full hydrogen supply chain, from production to end use. Cost-effective, accurate measurements of hydrogen gas will facilitate detection and mitigation of direct emissions. Advancing clean hydrogen is a key component of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to tackle the climate crisis, create good-paying jobs across the nation, and strengthen America’s competitiveness in the technologies of the future.

“President Biden has made historic investments in hydrogen infrastructure to support the future hydrogen economy, Americans’ health and environmental wellbeing, and create jobs. ARPA-E is focused on doing its part to reinforce America's global leadership in the growing clean hydrogen industry,” said ARPA-E Director Evelyn N. Wang. “Given the projected growth of the hydrogen economy and potential near-term warming effects of atmospheric hydrogen, detection and mitigation of hydrogen emissions is essential and ARPA-E is proud to lead this work.”

Hydrogen does not absorb infrared (IR) light and therefore does not act as a direct greenhouse gas (GHG) in the atmosphere. However, hydrogen is considered an indirect GHG due to its ability to extend the lifetime of other GHGs in the atmosphere. This lack of IR absorption also makes the detection of atmospheric hydrogen extremely challenging. ARPA-E—through the H2SENSE Exploratory Topic—is seeking technologies with a:

  • Minimum detection and quantification threshold of 10 kg/hr across a 100 meters (m) x 100 m area; and
  • Cost of no more than $10,000 for the detection area.

These performance targets will enable a systems-level approach to large-area monitoring of hydrogen emissions. You can access more information on ARPA-E Exchange.

The H2SENSE Exploratory Topic builds on ARPA-E’s prior work pioneering precise atmospheric gas detection industries. Before ARPA-E’s MONITOR program, low-cost, continuous methane detection and mitigation was not possible. But now, ARPA-E-funded projects born from that initiative—like LongPath, which recently received an LPO loan guarantee —have created a paradigm shift and developed technologies capable of detecting over 90% of methane leaks down to 0.2 kg/hr from nearly a mile away. ARPA-E is building on this history with H2SENSE in pursuit of low-cost, effective hydrogen emissions detection.

ARPA-E advances high-potential, high-impact clean energy technologies across a wide range of technical areas that are strategic to America's energy security. Learn more about these efforts and ARPA-E's commitment to ensuring the United States continues to lead the world in developing and deploying advanced clean energy technologies.
