Ph.D. in Human Resource Management

Program information.

The doctoral program in human resource management (HRM) prepares students for success in research universities as faculty members specializing in human resources. Doctoral students work closely with faculty to gain research and teaching expertise in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HRM, including the relationship between these practices and organizational strategies, cultures, and performance.

Many HRM scholars specialize or focus on more micro-level work, such as researching the impact of specific HR practices (e.g., selection or training techniques) on individual-level measures of satisfaction or performance. Alternatively, macro-level HR (i.e., “strategic HRM”) scholars study the effects of systems of HR policies and practices on organizational-level outcomes. KU faculty have expertise at both levels, as evidenced by publications in prestigious outlets.

Application deadlines

Priority: December 15, 2023

Final: January 10, 2024

  • Application requirements

Doctoral students work closely with faculty to gain research expertise in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HRM with a focus on the attraction, selection, retention, development, motivation, and utilization of individuals in organizations.

Part of our mission is to develop effective teachers. To that end, all doctoral students are required to teach at least two sections as independent instructors. The school and university prepare and reward doctoral students for excellence in teaching through various programs and awards.

Readmission

If a graduate student in an OLPD program has become inactive they must follow the readmission procedures .

Whether you seek reactivation after accidentally being discontinued this term or want to return after a long absence these are the steps needed to re-apply.

  • Complete the proper online readmission application . If you have been away from the program less than five years use the Express Readmission Application and email it to [email protected] . All others must submit the Online Application for Readmission
  • Once received, the department will forward your application to the appropriate admissions committee. Readmission decisions are normally determined by the program’s admissions committee, not any one individual faculty member. Readmission is never guaranteed. Decisions for readmission are based on a review of previous progress toward degree completion, the proposed timeline for completion, the availability of faculty resources, and/or any additional application materials they may request from you. Individual programs/tracks reserve the right to readmit students under the current graduate program requirements, rules, and guidelines. They may also request an applicant to provide additional information prior to making a decision.
  • Once the committee makes their recommendation, the department’s DGS will sign off on the decision and forward the result to the central Graduate Admissions Office for processing. Once processed, you will be notified of the decision.

Individual department programs and tracks reserve the right to require readmitted students to retake coursework if they deem it appropriate. Readmitted students are also required to abide by current time-to-degree policies as determined by the University, which may differ from the policy in place when they first started the degree program.

Individuals seeking readmission to the Ph.D., Ed.D., and M.A. program tracks in the former EDPA, WHRE, and WCFE majors can only reapply to the appropriate program track under the Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD) major name.

We’re here to help. Simply complete this form and a member of our department will be in touch.

Department of Management and Human Resources PhD Specialization in Human Resources

The primary goal of the Management and Human Resources PhD program is to develop top-class researchers in the field of management, with specializations in the areas of entrepreneurship, human resource management, international business, organizational behavior and strategic management.

The specialization in Human Resources (HR) is dedicated to understanding how work organizations can perform more effectively by better management of their human resources. That is, we are interested in understanding, identifying, and improving the effectiveness of HR practices (whether in the U.S. or in other countries) in the various functions and activities carried out as part of HR, and determining the optimal fit between these practices and organizational strategies, cultures, and performance.

Important research areas include recruiting, employee selection, performance management, learning, training and development, total rewards (compensation and benefits), and strategic human resource management.

Our faculty studies HR from theoretical perspectives based in economics, psychology, sociology, and management using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Typically, our faculty’s research investigates issues that contribute to the academic discipline as well as inform practice. The emphasis is on studies at the individual, team or group, organizational, and crosslevels of analysis. Our faculty also examines topics that can be considered to be in the realm of organizational behavior including work-family balance, job and work design, and teams. Also, our HR research is not limited to any one type of industry. We study practices within industries such as the middle markets, call centers, the military, restaurants, and hospitals as well as non-profits such as fire departments.

What Online Human Resources Doctorate Degree Holders Have to Say

“I apply what I learned in school in everything I do at work. For example, one of the committees I’m on now is charged with a large implementation project. At the forefront of my mind are the tenets of change management and the ingredients for sustainable change. The coursework provided me the confidence and knowledge to contribute in ways that would have never been possible otherwise. I’m better at thinking through concepts and specific steps that are crucial in exacting sustainable change. I feel like I’m more valuable in teams because I bring a different perspective.“I learned a great deal about change management and theory, the importance of adequately preparing an environment and its stakeholders for change, and ways to exact healthy change. We live in a state of flux, and navigating change can be difficult. A monumental thing that stood out as I got deeper into the program was how successful change can be when organizations and their leadership teams make commitments to effectively communicate, practice transparency and honor stakeholders…not just in words, but in actions. In the real world these things don’t always happen or there wouldn’t be entire programs teaching the subject matter, but think of the possibilities if they did.”
“The business and industry training coursework was very helpful for me especially as I pursued new leadership positions in the training space at work. However, the most significant learning came through the dissertation process. From topic selection, learning and applying research practices, recognizing the value of academic writing, and ‘"owning’" my expertise, I had no other option but to pull from my own motivation and efficacy. I routinely use all of the skills gleaned from this process today - post graduation: initiative, composure, persistence, confidence, and empathy.”
“A piece of advice I would have for prospective students would be to select a research topic before starting the program so you can focus on that topic throughout the program.“Something I learned in school that applies to my work today is the importance of understanding what I am attempting to solve when designing programs or creating strategies.”

Click below for more information on the

Dissertation Completion Pathway

Time to Completion

The University allows 7 years to complete all doctoral programs of 60 credits or less.

The median time to completion for this program is 49 months.

Time to completion varies depending upon the pace in which a student completes courses and the number of transfer credits accepted. As most students are working adults, balancing educational, professional, and personal commitments, our academic and finance advisors will work with you to develop a program schedule that works best for your needs.

Students following the preferred schedule designed by the Dean for this program, and applying no transfer credits, can expect to finish in as little as 38 months.

Dissertation Process

Faculty assist each Doctoral candidate to reach this academic goal through a systematic process leading to a high-quality completed dissertation. A PhD-HRM dissertation is a scholarly documentation of research that makes an original contribution to the field of study. This process requires care in choosing a topic, documenting its importance, planning the methodology, and conducting the research. These activities lead smoothly into the writing and oral presentation of the dissertation.

A doctoral candidate must be continuously enrolled throughout the series of dissertation courses. Dissertation courses are automatically scheduled and accepted without a break in scheduling to ensure that students remain in continuous enrollment throughout the dissertation course sequence. If additional time is required to complete any of the dissertation courses, students must re-enroll and pay the tuition for that course. Continuous enrollment will only be permitted when students demonstrate progress toward completing dissertation requirements. The Dissertation Committee determines progress.

Course Sequence

This program can be completed with a minimum of 60 credit hours, but may require additional credit hours, depending on the time required to complete the dissertation research. If needed, additional courses will be added to the student degree program in alignment with the SAP and Academic Maximum Time to Completion policies. Students who do not complete their program in accordance with these policies may be dismissed.

Guide to PhD Success in Human Resource Management

Shoolini Team

Opting for a PhD in Human Resource Management is a rewarding experience. It can advance your career, deepen your understanding of organisational structures, and equip you with skills applicable across multiple industries.

But this journey is not a walk in the park. Getting a PhD in Human Resource Management comes with challenges, like any worthwhile pursuit. So, let’s discuss why some people think human resources is challenging and address those concerns.

This blog offers insights that could shift your perspective. By the end, you should understand why pursuing a degree and career in human resources is both achievable and fulfilling. Join us as we explore the challenges of pursuing a PhD in Human Resource Management.

Facing PhD Human Resource Obstacles Head-On

A PhD Human Resource degree is a big commitment that takes time. Usually lasting four to six years, it involves a mix of classes, extensive research, dissertation writing, and defending your work. It’s a challenging academic journey requiring dedication, perseverance, and good time management.

Doing original research in HR can be tricky. You have to find gaps in existing research, plan how to study these issues, collect and analyse data, and draw meaningful conclusions. The research journey may present unexpected challenges, making flexibility crucial.

Money is another aspect to consider. While some students get financial help through scholarships or assistantships, others must figure out how to cover tuition, living costs, and research expenses. It is crucial to plan your finances.

Balancing your PhD with your personal and work life is demanding. Many PhD students have part-time jobs, family responsibilities, and research tasks. Striking a good balance is important to avoid stress and burnout.

The pressure to create original research and meet academic standards can affect your emotions and mental well-being. Doubting yourself, feeling anxious, and dealing with isolation are common. Building a support system, having mentors, and taking care of yourself is essential to handle the emotional challenges of a PhD program .

Tips for Students of Doctoral Degree in Human Resource?

Overcoming the challenges of pursuing a PhD in Human Resource Management requires a strategic and proactive approach. Here are some practical tips for you.

1. Time Management

Tip: Develop a realistic schedule that allocates time for coursework, research, and personal life. Prioritise tasks and be adaptable when unexpected events arise.

2. Research Complexity

Tip: Break down the research process into manageable steps. Seek guidance from advisors and experts in the field. Stay open to adjusting your research plan as needed.

3. Financial Investment

Tip: Create a detailed financial plan considering tuition, living expenses, and research-related costs. Explore scholarship opportunities, grants, and assistantships. Look for part-time work or other sources of income.

4. Work-Life Balance

Tip: Set boundaries and communicate expectations with work, family, and academic commitments. Prioritise self-care to manage stress and prevent burnout. Learn to say no.

5. Emotional and Psychological Stress

Tip: Build a strong support system, including mentors, peers, and friends. Engage in regular self-care practices such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies. Seek professional help if needed. Regularly check in with your mental well-being.

6. Isolation and Self-Doubt

Tip: Connect with fellow doctoral candidates, join academic groups, and attend conferences to combat isolation. Establish open communication with your guide and peers. Remember that self-doubt is normal; focus on your achievements and seek constructive feedback.

7. Advisory Relationship Dynamics

Tip: Establish clear communication with your guide from the beginning. Regularly discuss expectations, progress, and concerns. Seek additional mentorship if necessary.

8. Networking

Tip: Build a professional network within your academic community and industry. Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars to connect with experts and peers. Networking can provide valuable insights, support, and potential collaboration opportunities.

Overcoming setbacks in a PhD program is a gradual process. Be patient with yourself, stay resilient, and celebrate small victories along the way. Seeking guidance from mentors and maintaining a positive mindset will contribute to your success.

  • Ganesh Alagarasan 0

You can also search for this author in PubMed   Google Scholar

You have highlighted how PhD training assessment has stagnated, despite evolving educational methodologies (see Nature 613 , 414 (2023) and Nature 627 , 244; 2024 ). In particular, you note the mismatch between the current PhD journey and the multifaceted demands of modern research and societal challenges.
