Commencement dates for the Doctoral Program are as follows:

Semester 1 entry only:

  • Accounting (application closing date 31 August)
  • Economics (application closing date 30 September)

Semester 2 entry only:

  • Decision, Risk and Financial Sciences (application closing date 15 February)
  • Finance (application closing date 1 February)
  • Management & Marketing (application closing date 15 February)

Applications for the PhD program in Actuarial Studies and Business Administration and Analytics can be made all year round.

It is only necessary to contact a potential supervisor prior to applying if you are submitting an application for the PhD in Actuarial Studies or Business Administration and Analytics.

The Higher Degrees Research Committee (HDRC) of the University will not approve entirely distance supervision or entirely on-line supervision for graduate researchers.

A PhD in Business and Economics takes the form of the Monash Doctoral Program. The program enables you to complete extensive, independent research on an agreed topic under the supervision of at least two expert academics. Your study will culminate in a written thesis or alternative approved output, which offers a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge in your chosen research area. The research component of your degree is enhanced by a series of coursework units or professional development activities designed to provide you with the skills to make an impact in academia, industry, government or the wider community.

Undertaking a PhD is a chance to push the boundaries of contemporary business practice and have a hand in solving some of the biggest challenges facing industry today.

You will be supported by a minimum of two supervisors throughout your enrolment, both of whom are committed to your success.

Depending on your focus, you will be assigned to one of the following disciplines: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Law and Taxation, Health Economics, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics, Management, Marketing or Business and Economics.

Entry criteria

The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD enrolment are:

a bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field; a course leading to a level rated by the relevant department, faculty and committee as equivalent to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field; a master's degree that entails work, normally including a significant research component, including at least 25% of one full time equivalent year of work, including a thesis. It is normally expected that a grade of honours 2A has been obtained for the research thesis or project. Where ungraded, examiners' reports will be taken into account; or have qualifications which in the opinion of GRC are deemed equivalent.

We are a world class group of researchers producing cutting-edge research of high quality and impact. We provide a diverse range of research interests . We hold close links with leading clinical research across the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and other researchers forming part of the University of Melbourne Health Economics Group (UHMEG). The latter draws on those from the Nossal Institute, Melbourne Institute, and Department of Economics. We also work closely with the ISPOR Victorian Student Chapter to provide support to PhD students.

A particular strength of the Health Economics Unit is its collaborative relationship with clinicians and health care providers. This provides an applied lens to our research and access to rich patient datasets and clinical expertise. We have collaborative research projects across the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Women’s Hospital, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Royal Children’s Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, Austin Health, Western Health, Northern Health, Walter and Eliza Institute and Doherty Institute.

We provide an active and growing PhD program with structured mentoring and an active seminar series. A talented and dynamic current PhD cohort provides a great community of support and will enhance your PhD experience. We place a critical emphasis on the development of early career researchers and provide regular training and mentoring sessions. International visitors are regularly hosted and the unit has key collaborations with the University of Oxford, University of Michigan, University of Sheffield, University of Birmingham, University of York and University of Antwerp.
