Summary of phd positions:.

The goal of this PhD project is to explore bottom-up atomic spin systems to understand multi-well energy landscapes and their use for brain-inspired computing. One of the paradigms in brain-inspired computing is based on creating attractor networks, where metastable local minima are used to represent information. In physics, such multi-well landscapes can be created from glassy spin systems, which exhibit metastable order. In 2020 (1), we hypothesised that atomic arrays of spins can be used to create such multi-well landscapes by using long-range interactions that lead to frustration.

Radboud University and Maastricht University Join Forces to Fund Research in Crop Biotechnology and Engineering

Over the next four years, four young researchers can start research into crop biotechnology and engineering, thanks to the collaboration between Radboud University and Maastricht University. The researchers will start work at the Brightlands Campus Greenport in Venlo, halfway between the two universities and at the heart of an important agricultural and horticultural area in the Netherlands and Germany.

Developing sustainable and productive agriculture and horticulture is one of the great societal challenges. The two universities of Nijmegen and Maastricht are working together to find a solution. A joint Master’s programme is being developed, while the Radboud-Maastricht Graduate Programme in Crop Biotechnology and Engineering will be launched before the end of this year.

Four PhD candidates will be appointed in that research programme, one every year from 2024. A vacancy for the first PhD candidate will be advertised during 2024. From the 2024-2025 academic year onwards, research proposals will be prepared by Research Master students in Maastricht and Nijmegen. Health and sustainability will be key elements in the proposals.

In terms of the plant and the technology

The collaboration between Radboud University and Maastricht University facilitated the start of this research programme, and a follow-up is certainly the intention, says Charles Underwood, Professor of Plant Genome Engineering at Radboud University and one of the initiators. ‘In our collaboration on crop biotechnology and engineering, we want to develop a programme in education and research in which food production is approached from the perspective of the plant and technology at the same time. We feel that this interdisciplinary approach is a strength of the collaboration between the two universities. We plan to convincingly demonstrate that in the coming years.’

Working with companies

This is not just a scientific collaboration; the research proposals are also being developed and implemented together with companies and organisations in agriculture and horticulture in the North Limburg region or beyond. In this way, the researchers aim to develop knowledge that connects with practice and contributes to a strong agriculture and horticulture sector that is internationally leading in terms of knowledge and technology.

The collaborating partners do not necessarily need to come from the Venlo region, but that is possible, says Wim Vriezen, Professor of Plant Functional Genomics at Maastricht University. He already works at the Brightlands campus in Venlo, with the Brightlands Future Farming Institute and knows the sector and the region. ‘North Limburg and the neighbouring area in Germany form a large horticultural area, just as big as the Westland. The entire value chain, from seed breeding and horticultural technology to packaging and distribution, is present in this area. It’s a great environment to grow this research programme.’

• Michigan Big Ten Medal of Honor Recipients

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced Tuesday (April 23) that senior Blake Corum (football) and graduate student Gabby Wilson (women's gymnastics) were named its 2024 Big Ten Medal of honor recipients.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career. The highest honor that a student competing in conference athletics can achieve in the Big Ten, the award was established in 1915 and was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. During the past century, the Big Ten Medal of Honor has been awarded to more than 1,300 honorees. These individuals have translated their campus experience into success in all walks of life.

Blake Corum, Football

Corum is the department's male honoree. He is the 41st recipient of the award from the football program, joining recent honorees Adam Shibley (2021) and Jake Butt (2017).

Hailing from Marshall, Va., Corum is a graduate of U-M's School of Kinesiology with a degree in sport management. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-District 5 honoree in 2021, and three times earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.

On the field, he leaves Michigan as one of the most accomplished players in the history of a storied program. Corum's 2022 and 2023 seasons yielded two All-America honors (unanimous first team, 2022), two top-10 Heisman Trophy finishes, two Ameche-Dayne Big Ten Running Back of the Year honors, the 2022 Chicago Tribune Silver Football award, and the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year award. Corum set single-season and career program records in rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and points scored during his 45-game career, helping lead Michigan to three consecutive Big Ten Championships (2021-23) and the 2023 National Championship as a team captain. In the national championship game he was named the game's Most Valuable Player on Offense.

The star running back says, "Football is my passion, but giving back is my purpose," and he lived that mantra during his time as a Wolverine. Through NIL earnings, he generously contributed money and many hours of his time to bettering the Ann Arbor campus community and the nearby areas of Ypsilanti and Detroit, Mich., in addition to his hometown in Virginia.

Corum's flagship event is his Giving Back 2 Give Thanks event during Thanksgiving, which he plans to continue in his future NFL city. This past November, he provided more than 600 Thanksgiving turkey meals and donated gallons of milk for those in need in Ypsilanti. Over the past three years, he donated more than 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to the community.

He provided backpacks full of school supplies to the area in a back-to-school event and undertook two holiday toy drives (2021, '23) with the Detroit Police Athletic League and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministry. In his recent drive, the public contributed more than 25,000 toys which were redistributed across Michigan, Virginia and Haiti. He has been active in visiting schools and reading to kids, contributing as a guest speaker, and has also made donations to pay rent for those in need of financial assistance.

For his off-field contributions, Corum was recognized as the 2023 AFCA Good Works Team Captain and as a finalist in 2023 for both the Wuerffel Trophy and Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, all community service- or character-based honors.

Gabby Wilson, Women's Gymnastics

Wilson is the department's female recipient, the eighth from the women's gymnastics program as teammate Sierra Brooks earned the honor in 2023. Other gymnastics recipients include: Heidi Cohen (1987), Beth Wymer (1995), Beth Amelkovich (1999), Janessa Grieco (2003), Sarah Curtis (2011), Katie Zurales (2013) and Nicole Artz (2017).

The Ypsilanti, Mich., native is one of the top gymnasts to compete at the University of Michigan earning countless individual awards, also while helping lead Michigan to its first-ever NCAA national title in 2021. She has 44 career event titles to her name, including nine on vault, two on uneven bars, four on balance beam, 25 on floor exercise and four in the all-around. Wilson is a six-time Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association All-America honoree, as well as a four-time WCGA regular season All-American. The graduate student is also a three-time individual regional champion, with two titles on floor and one on vault, and a three-time individual Big Ten champion with two wins on vault and one on floor.

Wilson also is a five-time All-Big Ten first-team honoree and a three-time Big Ten Championships team honoree. She has been named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on three occasions and is a three-time Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week. In addition to her individual accomplishments, Wilson has led Michigan to three Big Ten regular-season championships, two Big Ten team championships and the 2021 national championship.

Outside of the gym, Wilson is an outstanding student who has earned her degree in English and is pursuing her Master of Public Policy. Wilson is a four-time WCGA Academic All-American, a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Wilson is the DEI Chair for the Student Advisory Committee, and in her sophomore season spearheaded the "Educate Us" initiative in an effort to educate her team and community about racism and discrimination in the country. With this initiative, Wilson not only educated the team but also fans, defined the problem, taught the shared history and upheld the values of the team's culture.

Wilson runs a video series that focuses on self-actualization and confidence tactics, also volunteering at local elementary schools in Ann Arbor and promoting early literacy intervention through policy research.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is acclaimed throughout the nation, and in particular by the NCAA, "as one of the significant gestures yet made in college sports." The Big Ten Medal of Honor was expanded in 1982 to include one female student-athlete from each institution.

College of Engineering dean named provost at Ohio University

Donald J. Leo will begin his new position on July 1

Donald J. Leo, UGA Foundation Professor in Engineering and dean of the University of Georgia College of Engineering, has been named the next executive vice president and provost at Ohio University. He will begin his new position on July 1, 2024.

“Serving as dean of the College of Engineering at UGA has been an extraordinary experience,” said Leo. “It has been a privilege to work with an amazing group of faculty, staff, students and alumni who are committed to creating a world-class engineering experience at this great university.”

Leo joined UGA as dean of the College of Engineering in 2013, a year after the college was established. On his watch, the number of students majoring in engineering at UGA has nearly tripled from fewer than 1,000 students to more than 2,800 students.

Leo has overseen significant increases in the breadth and depth of the college’s research enterprise, and he has been instrumental in expanding partnerships with industry and community stakeholders. He also guided a multiyear renovation that transformed the college’s instructional hub, the Driftmier Engineering Center.

“I want to thank Dean Leo for his outstanding leadership of our thriving College of Engineering and his deep commitment to the success of our students,” said UGA President Jere W. Morehead. “I am confident he will be successful as he moves into the role of provost at Ohio University, and I wish him the best on this next chapter in his career.”

Jack Hu, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Georgia, will soon appoint an interim dean for the College of Engineering and launch a search for Leo’s successor.

“The UGA College of Engineering is well positioned to build upon its tremendous success in teaching, research and service thanks to the strong foundation Don helped establish during his tenure,” said Hu. “Although I am sorry to see him leave UGA, this is an amazing opportunity for Don. Ohio University has made a great choice for their new provost.”

As executive vice president and provost, Leo will hold the second-highest office at Ohio University. He will serve as the chief academic officer of the university with responsibility for all academic programs, research, resource allocation and student success. The university enrolls more than 28,000 students across its main campus in Athens, five regional campuses and online.

Prior to joining UGA, Leo served as a professor of mechanical engineering and vice president and executive director of the National Capital Region operations of Virginia Tech. He previously served as associate dean for research and graduate studies at Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering.

Leo’s research focuses on smart materials, and he has served as the principal investigator on 50 research grants and contracts. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 research publications. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a member of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Leo earned a doctorate and a master’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

New algorithm cuts through ‘noisy’ data to better predict tipping points

UB mathematicians’ theory determines which data points matter most when calculating early warning signals

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Whether you’re trying to predict a climate catastrophe or mental health crisis, mathematics tells us to look for fluctuations. 

Changes in data, from wildlife population to anxiety levels, can be an early warning signal that a system is reaching a critical threshold, known as a tipping point, in which those changes may accelerate or even become irreversible. 

But which data points matter most? And which are simply just noise?

A new algorithm developed by University at Buffalo researchers can identify the most predictive data points that a tipping point is near. Detailed in Nature Communications , this theoretical framework uses the power of stochastic differential equations to observe the fluctuation of data points, or nodes, and then determine which should be used to calculate an early warning signal. 

Simulations confirmed this method was more accurate at predicting theoretical tipping points than randomly selecting nodes.

“Every node is somewhat noisy — in other words, it changes over time — but some may change earlier and more drastically than others when a tipping point is near. Selecting the right set of nodes may improve the quality of the early warning signal, as well as help us avoid wasting resources observing uninformative nodes,” says the study’s lead author, Naoki Masuda, PhD, professor and director of graduate studies in the UB Department of Mathematics, within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The study was co-authored by Neil MacLaren, Phd, a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Mathematics, and Kazuyuki Aihara, PhD, executive director of the International Research Center for Neurointelligence at the University of Tokyo. 

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Japan Science and Technology Agency.

Warning signals connected via networks

The algorithm is unique in that it fully incorporates network science into the process. While early warning signals have been applied to ecology and psychology for the last two decades, little research has focused on how those signals are connected within a network, Masuda says. 

Consider depression. Recent research has considered it and other mental disorders as a network of symptoms influencing each other by creating feedback loops. A loss of appetite could mean the onset of five other symptoms in the near future, depending on how close those symptoms are on the network.

“As a network scientist, I felt network science could offer a unique or perhaps even improved approach to early warning signals,” Masuda says. 

By thoroughly considering systems as networks, researchers found that simply selecting the nodes with highest fluctuations was not the best strategy. That’s because some selected nodes may be too closely related to other selected nodes.

“Even if we combine two nodes with nice early warning signals, we don’t necessarily get a more accurate signal. Sometimes combining a node with a good signal and another node with a mid-quality signal actually gives us a better signal,” Masuda says. 

While the team validated the algorithm with numerical simulations, they say it can readily be applied to actual data because it does not require information about the network structure itself; it only requires two different states of the networked system to determine an optimal set of nodes. 

“The next steps will be to collaborate with domain experts such as ecologists, climate scientists and medical doctors to further develop and test the algorithm with their empirical data and get insights into their problems,” Masuda says.

Florida international university graduate student selected for inaugural idea 2 public policy fellowship.

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) and the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) are pleased to announce that Kristine Zikmanis has been selected for the 2024 Inclusive, Diverse, Equitable, Accepting, and Accessible (IDEA 2 ) Public Policy Fellowship. This new professional development opportunity provides young scientists with valuable first-hand experience in science policy.

Kristine Zikmanis is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University. As an ecologist, Zikmanis studies animal behavior and has a strong interest in research at the intersection of ecology and marine policy. She is also passionate about science communication and collaborative research. In 2020, she received the Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship, administered by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Coastal Management—an experience that ignited her passion for actionable science. As a NOAA Fellow, she helped scientists and coastal communities understand the challenges that influence future policy and management strategies.

Ms. Zikmanis applied for the fellowship because it provides “actual work experience” in science policy. “It will allow me to take all the knowledge and skills I have obtained during my graduate career and learn how to apply it at the federal level,” she notes. Kristine firmly believes that it is the responsibility of scientists to “ensure that the research we conduct is appropriately communicated to make informed management decisions,” adding, “our research can only make a difference if decision makers are aware of and understand it.”

During the summer of 2024, Ms. Zikmanis will work closely with AIBS and SURA policy staff to gain first-hand experience with science policy and advocacy efforts that inform federal decision-making. She will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects, including conducting research for science policy initiatives, monitoring the activities of federal science agencies, and tracking and reporting on legislative developments.

“AIBS is excited to partner with SURA to provide this unique training opportunity to a young scientist who is keenly interested in gaining valuable experiences in science policy,” said AIBS Chief Executive Officer Scott Glisson. “Ms. Zikmanis impressed the committee with her enthusiasm for scientific discovery and her ability to translate those discoveries into accessible messages for policy makers,” noted SURA President and CEO Sean Hearne. “We look forward to working with her and having her interact with policy makers from around the country.”

The IDEA 2 Public Policy Fellowship is financially supported by AIBS and SURA. SURA is a national consortium of over 50 universities dedicated to advancing collaborative research and education and to strengthen the scientific capabilities of its members and the nation. AIBS is a nonprofit scientific association dedicated to advancing the biological sciences for the benefit of science and society.
