Déjà vu review: Arulnithi-starrer investigative thriller checks all the boxes and never wastes audience's time

Déjà vu review: filmmaker arvind srinivasan's directorial debut boasts of some smart twists. the thriller predominantly works due to its focused storytelling..

Arulnithi, who has quietly carved his own space with his unique choice of films, has evolved as the go-to actor for thriller-based subjects in Tamil cinema . His latest release Déjà vu, by debutant filmmaker Arvind Srinivasan, is a decent investigative thriller that boasts of some smart twists and predominantly works due to its focused storytelling. The film opens with a novelist (Achyut Kumar) storming into a police station in the middle of the night, completely drunk, to file a complaint about harassment calls. He claims that the characters from his latest work are coming to life and calling and threatening him. He files a written complaint but given his drunk condition, the police officials don’t take him seriously.

Next morning, police rush to the writer’s house and take him into custody on the basis of a call to the control room from a woman the previous night who claims that the writer has something to do with her kidnapping. Upon further investigation, it is revealed that the Deputy General of Police’s ( Madhoo Shah ) daughter is missing and the police believe it could be the same person who called the control room. Clueless about how to handle the case and to ensure her emotions don’t overtake her decision, the DGP appoints special officer Vikram Kumar (Arulnithi) to investigate the case.

At just about two hours long, Déjà vu never wastes a minute and that really works in the film’s favour as it keeps audiences hooked till the very last minute. Its taut narration is one of the major highlights and this works even when the story takes a few predictable turns to eventually impress with the big twist towards the end. This is one of those rare films with no heroine and this saves the viewers from any silly romantic subplot. The novelist’s premonition angle works very well in creating suspense from the very first frame. It’s an original idea that’s built well and weaved into the story seamlessly to make the proceedings as gripping as possible.

Arulnithi as the investigative officer is a smart pick, and he plays his part quite convincingly. Madhoo gets a meaty part and her character goes through a very interesting transformation phase which most can’t see coming. As far as a thriller goes, Déjà vu manages to impress to a large extent and leaves hardly any room for complaints.

முதல் பார்வை | தேஜாவு - வித்தியாசமான த்ரில்லர் முயற்சி. ஆனால்..?

''ஊழ்வினை உருத்து வந்து ஊட்டும்'' என்பது தான் படத்தின் ஒன்லைன்.

முகமூடி அணிந்த மர்ம கும்பலால் பெண் ஒருவர் கடத்தப்படுகிறார். எழுத்தாளர் ஒருவர் எழுதும் இந்தக் கதை நிஜத்திலும் அப்படியே அரங்கேறுகிறது. அவரது எழுத்துகள் உயிர்பெறுவது சுற்றியிருப்பவர்களுக்கு குழப்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. கடத்தப்படும் அந்தப் பெண் பெரிய இடத்து பெண் என்பதால் இந்தச் சம்பவத்தை பொதுவெளியில் தெரியாமல், அன்டர்கவர் அதிகாரி விக்ரம் குமார் (அருள்நிதி) மூலமாக டீல் செய்யப்படுகிறது.

இது தொடர்பான விசாரணை சூடுபிடிக்கவே, அந்தப் பெண் எதற்காக கடத்தப்பட்டார்? யாரால் கடத்தப்பட்டார்? எழுத்தாளர் எழுதுவது எப்படி நிஜத்தில் சாத்தியமாகிறது? - இப்படி பல விடைதெரியாத கேள்விகளுக்கு த்ரில்லர் பாணியில் விடை சொல்லும் திரைக்கதை தான் 'தேஜாவு'.

த்ரில்லர் படங்களை ஆதர்சமாக கொண்டு நடித்து வரும் அருள்நிதி, படம் தொடங்கி 20 நிமிடங்களுக்குப் பிறகே திரையில் தோன்றுகிறார். க்ளீன் ஷேவ், கண்ணாடி, அயன்செய்த சட்டை, மறந்தும் கூட மலராத முகம் என கறார் அதிகாரியாக கவனம் பெறுகிறார். மிகை நடிப்பின்றி, தேவையான மீட்டரில் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு தகுந்த நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.

'ரோஜா', 'ஜென்டில்மேன்' படங்களில் நடித்து புகழ்பெற்ற மதுபாலா டிஜிபி கதாபாத்திரத்தை ஏற்று நடித்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால், ஒரு மாநில டிஜிபிக்கான நேர்த்தியும், அதற்கு உண்டான கம்பீரமும் அவரிடம் மிஸ்ஸிங். பொருத்தமில்லாத தேர்வும், சில இடங்களில் செயற்கை நடிப்பும் துருத்தல்.

தவிர காளி வெங்கட், ஸ்ம்ருதி வெங்கட், சேத்தன், ராகவ் விஜய் ஆகியோர் தேர்ந்த நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர். எழுத்தாளராக வரும் அச்யுத் குமாரின் நடிப்பு ஈர்த்தாலும், எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கரின் டப்பிங் குரலால் அவ்வப்போது இரண்டு கேரக்டர்களை கண்முன் நிறுத்துகிறது.

அறிமுக இயக்குநர் அரவிந்த் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் எழுதி படத்தை இயக்கியிருக்கிறார். பொதுவாக சஸ்பென்ஸ் த்ரில்லர் படங்கள் ஓர் உலகத்தை கட்டமைத்து அதற்குள் பார்வையாளர்களை இழுத்துச் செல்லும். விறுவிறுப்பான குழப்பான அந்த உலகில் எது வேண்டுமானாலும் நடக்கும். இறுதியில் அதற்கான உரிய நியாயத்தை சேர்த்து, பார்வையாளர்களை பரவசப்படுத்தி திருப்தியுடன் திரையரங்குகளிலிருந்து வெளியேற்றும் சக்தி படைத்தவை த்ரில்லர் ஜானர்கள். மக்களால் அதிகம் விருப்பப்படுபவையும் கூட.

அந்த வகையில் 'தேஜாவு' படத்தின் தொடக்கமே ஒரு சுவாரஸ்யத்தை கொடுக்கிறது. வழக்கமாக இல்லாமல், 'எழுத்தாளரில் எழுத்துகள் உயிர்பெற்று நிஜத்தில் நடமாடுகின்றன' என்ற காட்சி ஆர்வத்தை கூட்டுகிறது. அதே டோனை இழுத்து கொண்டு திருப்பங்களை சுழல விட்டு முதல் பாதியில் விறுவிறுப்பை கூட்டுகிறார் இயக்குநர். கடத்தலையும் தாண்டி, எழுத்தாளரின் எழுத்துகள் உருப்பெறுவதற்கான காரணத்தை அறிந்துகொள்ளும் ஆர்வம் பார்வையாளர்களிடையே மோலோங்குகிறது. அந்தவகையில் நல்ல தொடக்கம்.

இரண்டாம் பாதியில் முதல் பாதியில் நிலவிய சஸ்பென்ஸுக்கான நியாயங்களும், குழப்பங்களுக்கான விடைகளும் விடுவிக்கப்படும் என்பதால் அதற்கான எதிர்பார்ப்பு அதிகமாகவே இருந்தது. ஆனால், அதற்கான காரணங்கள் வலுவற்று, செயற்கைத்தன்மையுடன் இருந்தது படத்துடன் ஒன்றாமல் தடுத்து விடுகிறது. நிறைய லாஜிக் மீறல்களும், குழப்பங்களுக்கான விடைகளில் ஏற்படும் குழப்பங்களும் அயற்சியைத் தந்துவிடுகிறது.

குறிப்பாக பார்வையாளர்களை படத்துடன் ஒன்றவைக்கும் எமோஷனல் கனெக்ட் போன்ற உணர்வுரீதியாக உள்ளிழுக்கும் காட்சிகள் பெயரளவில் வைக்கப்பட்டதும், அந்த காட்சிகள் படம் பார்ப்பவர்களுக்கு எந்த பாதிப்பையும் ஏற்படுத்தாததும் பெரும் மைனஸ்.

படத்தில் ஜிப்ரானின் பின்னணி இசை சில காட்சிகளில் ஓகே என்றாலும், ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக இன்னும் கூடுதல் விறுவிறுப்பைக் கூட்ட உதவியிருக்கலாம். முத்தையாவின் ஒளிப்பதிவு ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக நிறைவைத் தருகிறது. அருள் இ சித்தார்த் தேவையற்ற காட்சிகளால் நீளத்தை கூட்டாமல் கச்சிதமாக வெட்டியது பலம்.

மொத்தத்தில் தேஜாவு வித்தியாசமான முதல் பாதியில் தொடங்கி, வேகத்தை குறைக்கும் இரண்டாம் பாதியை நெருங்கி, வழக்கமான இறுதிப்பகுதியை சென்றடைந்திருக்கிறது. இரண்டாம் பாதியில் சுவாரஸ்யமான காட்சிகளுடன் கூடுதலாக மெனக்கெட்டிருந்தால் நல்ல த்ரில்லர் படங்களுக்கான பட்டியலில் 'தேஜாவு' இணைந்திருக்கும்.

தமிழகக் காவல் துறையின் டிஜிபி ஆக இருப்பவர் மதுபாலா. அவரது மகள் ஸ்முருதி வெங்கட்டை யாரோ சிலர் கடத்திவிடுகிறார்கள். அதைப் பற்றி தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் விசாரிக்க அவரது சக போலீஸ் அதிகாரி ஒருவரிடம் அண்டர்கவர் ஆபீசர் ஒருவரைக் கேட்கிறார். அந்த ஆபீசராக அருள்நிதி வருகிறார். அவர் விசாரணையில் தீவிரமாக இறங்குகிறார். ஸ்முருதி கடத்தப்படும் போது காவல் துறை கட்டுப்பாட்டுக்கு அறைக்கு போன் செய்யும் போது எழுத்தாளர் அச்யுத் குமார் பெயரைச் சொல்கிறார். அவரை விசாரிக்கச் சென்ற போது நடக்கும், அவர் புதிதாக எழுதி வரும் கதையில் என்ன இருக்கிறதோ அதுதான் தற்போது ஸ்முருதியின் கடத்தலாக இருக்கிறது. அதைக் கண்டு அருள்நிதி, மதுபாலா அதிர்ச்சியடைகிறார்கள். கடத்தப்பட்ட ஸ்முருதியை அருள்நிதி கண்டுபிடித்தாரா, அச்யுத் குமார் எப்படி நடக்கும் உண்மைகளை முன்னரே ஒரு கதையாக எழுதுகிறார் என்பதையும் கண்டுபிடித்தாரா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. படம் ஆரம்பத்தில் டேக் ஆப் ஆவதில் சற்றே தடுமாறுகிறது. அருள்நிதி வந்த பிறகு கொஞ்சம் பரபரப்பு கூடுகிறது. சில எதிர்பாராத திருப்புமுனைகள் கதையில் அவ்வப்போது இடம் பெறுகிறது. அதே சமயம் கிளைமாக்சில் அத்தனை திருப்பங்களைக் கொடுப்பது மிகவும் 'ஹெவியாக' இருக்கிறது. அருள்நிதி நாயகனாக நடித்து சமீபத்தில்தான் 'டி பிளாக்' என்ற த்ரில்லர் படம் வந்தது. அடுத்த படமாக மீண்டும் ஒரு த்ரில்லர் படமாக இந்த 'தேஜாவு' படத்தில் நடித்திருக்கிறார். அண்டர் கவர் ஆபீசராக மிகவும் பொருத்தமாகவே நடித்திருக்கிறார். பேச்சு, உடல்மொழி, என இரண்டிலும் கம்பீரத்தைக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார். ஆனாலும், மாநிலத்தின் டிஜிபியிடமே நெஞ்சை நிமிர்த்திக் கொண்டு கண்டிஷனாகப் பேசுவதெல்லாம் ரொம்பவே ஓவர். கிளைமாக்சில் இவரது கதாபாத்திரம் பற்றித் தெரிய வரும் போது எதிர்பாராத அதிர்ச்சியாகவே உள்ளது. படத்தில் கதாநாயகியாக யாருமே இல்லை. டிஜிபி ஆக மதுபாலா. 30 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு வெளிவந்த 'ரோஜா, ஜென்டில்மேன்' படங்களில் கதாநாயகியாக நடித்தவர். இந்தப் படத்தில் பெண் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் இவருக்குத்தான் அதிக முக்கியத்துவம். மாநிலத்தின் முதல் காவல் துறை அதிகாரி பதவி தான் டிஜிபி. அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு கதாபாத்திரத்தில் பொருத்தமில்லாமல் இருக்கிறார் மதுபாலா. படத்தின் பெரும் மைனஸ் பாயின்ட்டாக இந்தக் கதாபாத்திரம்தான் உள்ளது. ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணன் போன்றவர்கள் நடித்திருந்தால் பொருத்தமாக இருந்திருக்கும். ஒரு டிஜிபி இப்படி கூட ஏமாறுவாரா என கிளைமாக்சில் மிகப் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சி ஒன்றைக் கொடுக்கிறார்கள். இந்த வாட்சப் யுகத்தில் இப்படிக் கூட நடக்குமா ?. எழுத்தாளராக அச்யுத் குமார், டிஜிபி உதவியாளராக சேத்தன், மதுபாலா மகளாக ஸ்முருதி வெங்கட், கான்ஸ்டபிளாக காளி வெங்கட் மற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்களில் குறிப்பிடப்பட வேண்டியவர்கள். ஜிப்ரான் பின்னணி இசை, பி.ஜி.முத்தையா ஒளிப்பதிவு படத்தின் தரத்தை நன்றாகவே உயர்த்தி இருக்கிறது. முத்தையாவின் மிரட்டலான விஷுவல்களுக்கு தனது பின்னணி இசையில் கூடுதல் மிரட்டலைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் ஜிப்ரான். ஆரம்பத்தில் நாம் சொன்னதைப் போல இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் செதுக்கியிருந்தால் நல்ல த்ரில்லர் படமாக அமைந்திருக்கும். தேஜாவு - 55 %, இரண்டாம் வகுப்பில் தேர்ச்சி

DEJAVU MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Deja Vu has Arulnithi starring in a thriller again. Actors being typecast might give a sense of boredom. But Arulnithi in a well-made thriller is always a joy to watch. The plot begins with a writer who writes down a sequence of events before they actually happen. Is he really able to foresee the future or is it all a lie? The film answers this question in a gripping manner. The story does take its time to settle in. But once it does there are no speed breakers till the end. The choice to let out songs ensures that film doesn't slow down at any point.

The casting of Achyut Kumar as a writer is a refreshing choice. He lives the role of the alcoholic writer to perfection. The fact that he is rarely seen in Tamil cinema lends to the air of mystery around him. MS Bhaskar's voiceover is an added attraction. It is almost as if two seasoned performers joined together to give the audience a memorable experience.

Arulnithi - He brings out the aura and the swag of the police officer without resorting to gimmicks.  In fact, he comes into the film only after the story is set in motion. It is good to see a hero give up on all the template elements that are usually reserved for a hero. His familiarity with the thriller settings also helps us to connect with him instantly.

Kaali Venkat shines in a brief role. I have always felt that his voice is a major plus. In this one too he uses his voice to his advantage. Actress Madhoo actually tries her best in a very pivotal role in the movie but somehow the performance doesn't draw you in.

Ghibran's background score further enhances the mystery around the proceedings. He keeps the suspense and the tension alive with his music.

Though there are twists till the very end the lack of emotional connection with either of the victims is a major negative. You don't feel the tension that a major character in the film feels for a missing person.

Despite these negatives it is a very promising debut for Arvindh Srinivasan who shows a lot of potential in his first film. Letting go of the unnecessary commercial elements and the songs is a bold move by a first time filmmaker. Thankfully it works in the film's favour.

Dejavu Movie Review: Logic goes for a toss in this rudderless thriller

Debutant Arvindh Srinivasan's Dejavu has an impressive start. A drunk novelist with supposed ESP (Extra Sensory Power) to predict crime scenes, pens a page describing a young girl's kidnap and his fiction turns out to be reality the next day. His predictions are so accurate that he even gets the vehicle numbers of the suspects right, even before they board into one. Though the writer's prediction game is initially fun, the film needed an equally interesting investigation track to keep the momentum going. But, sadly it doesn't. It actually does the opposite, the cumbersome investigation turns the tables and the one predicting the forthcoming event is the audience, not the writer in the story. It is disappointing that the scenes which manage to escape this predictability are the ones where logic goes for a toss and the audience is taken for granted. In an attempt to make the twists unguessable Arvindh sabotages the little he had built till then by making his leads react in unusual ways and take the oddest decisions. For instance, in an ideal world, the writer would have been taken into custody within hours and the secret behind the ESP would be out in minutes. But here the DGP appoints a dull PC to overview the writer as he happily pens the crime scenes, sipping a glass of booze.

The penultimate reveals towards the end of the whodunit, makes us wonder more about 'Whys' and 'hows'. And the tool the filmmaker uses to drop these reveals is monologues! Almost every main character goes on a confession spree as if they were waiting for their turn in a queue.  Had the filmmaker opted to show things visually instead of making his characters recite them, the damage would have been considerably dampened.

Achyuth Kumar and Arulnithi's invested performances and Ghibran's terrific score are perhaps the only elements that keep us invested in this unengaging ride. Casting a limited actor like Madhoo in a role with layers does take an extra toll on the overall film.

For those unaware, Dejavu was shot parallel in Telugu as Repeat , starring Naveen Chandra in Arulnithi's role. Sadly, significant chunks of the Telugu portion have been retained for the Tamil version too. This only adds more to the misery.

Dejavu has been titled so to denote the series of events that repeat themselves after a year, exactly on the same day. But the abysmal screenplay and staging of the film give us the Deja Vu of a dozen woeful thrillers that we remember for all the wrong reasons.

கதையின் கரு: 

டிஜிபி ஆஷா (மதுபாலா) வின் மகளை ஒரு மர்மகும்பல் ஒன்று கடத்தி விடுகிறது. அவரை மீட்க, அன் அபிஷியல் போலீஸ் அதிகாரி என்ற பெயரில் களத்தில் இறங்குகிறார் விக்ரம் குமார் ( அருள்நிதி). இந்த கடத்தலில் எழுத்தாளராக வரும் அச்யுத் குமாருக்கு தொடர்பு இருப்பது தெரியவர, அவரிடம் விசாரணை நடத்தியதில், இந்த வழக்கில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களையும், அடுத்து விசாரணையில் தொடரும் சம்பவங்களையும், அவர் முன்னமே கதையாக எழுதி வருவது தெரிகிறது.  

இந்தக்கதைக்கும் அந்த கடத்தல் சம்பவத்திற்கும் என்ன தொடர்பு. ..? இறுதியாக விக்ரம் ஆஷாவின் மகளை கண்டுபிடித்தாரா..? கடத்தல் சம்பவத்திற்கு பின்னால் உள்ளவர்கள் யார்? ஏன் அந்த கடத்தல் சம்பவம் அரங்கேற்றப்பட்டது..? உள்ளிட்ட கேள்விகளுக்கான பதில் தான் மீதிக்கதை

த்ரில்லர் ஜானருக்கு பேர் போன அருள்நிதியின் கேரியரில், அடுத்த நல்ல படமாக வந்திருக்கிறது தேஜாவு. பெரிதான மெனக்கெடல் இல்லையென்றாலும், கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு நியாயம் செய்திருக்கிறார். டிஜிபியாக வரும் மதுபாலாவின் நடிப்பு அசத்தல். படம் முழுக்க வரும் அவரின் கதாபாத்திரம் படத்திற்கு பெரும் பலமாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது. அதே போல, எழுத்தாளராக வரும் அச்யுத் குமாரும், தனது நடிப்பால் கதாபாத்திரத்தை கவனம் பெற செய்திருக்கிறார். 

த்ரில்லர் ஜானரின் பெரும் பலம் அதில் இருக்கும் சஸ்பென்ஸ். அந்த சஸ்பென்ஸை, தனது திரைக்கதையால் இறுதி வரை சுவாரசியம் குறையாமல் பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறார் அறிமுக இயக்குநர் அரவிந்த் சீனிவாசன். பாடல்கள், ஃபைட் வேண்டாமென முடிவெடித்து, கதைக்கு என்ன தேவையோ,அதை மட்டும் செய்திருப்பது நிச்சயம் பாராட்டத்தக்கது. 

படத்தின் இருபெரும் தூண்களாக நிற்பது இசையமைப்பாளர் ஜிப்ரானும், ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் பி.ஜி.முத்தையாவும். முத்தையா காட்சிகளை தனது ஒளிக்கண்களால் செதுக்க,  இசையமைப்பாளர் ஜிப்ரான் பின்னணி இசையை கனகச்சிதமாக கொடுத்து படத்தை கரை சேர்த்திருக்கிறார். ஆரம்பத்தில் கதை வர நேரம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டமை, பல இடங்களில் விஷ்வலாக இல்லாமல் வார்த்தைகளால் கதை சொன்னது போன்றவை பலவீனமாக இருந்தாலும் கூட, தேஜாவு நிச்சயம் பெரிதாக ஏமாற்றவில்லை.

Arulnithi's dejavu tamil movie review - film directed by arvindh srinivasan.

Arulnithi's next outing in Kollywood, Dejavu has released in cinemas today and it is a crime thriller directed by debutant Arvindh Srinivasan. Achyuth Kumar, Madhubala, Mime Gopi, Kaali Venkat, and Smruthi Venkat form the supporting cast. So, how has the film fared? Read on to know! 

STORY:  DGP Asha Pramod's (Madhubala) daughter Pooja (Smruthi Venkat) gets kidnapped by unidentified men and the following incidents after the kidnap happens exactly as predicted by a crime novelist (Achyuth Kumar). Whatever the novelist writes, it happens in real life, making the case look more puzzled and mysterious. An undercover cop named Vikram Kumar (Arulnithi) is assigned the case to resolve the mystery and find Pooja. How did the writer manage to predict every single development of the kidnap and did Vikram Kumar solve the case forms the rest of the plot.  

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES & DIRECTION:  Debut director Arvindh Srinivasan has got a promising premise in hand and it is definitely a story that has got the potential to be converted into celluloid. The film starts off on an impressive note and it piques our curiosity. A crime novelist writer comes to a Police station to file a complaint that his fictional characters exist in real life and they commit the crimes exactly how it has been written in the book. This idea definitely has your interest and the first half keeps you glued. However, the fizz is not maintained throughout. The film has inconsistent pacing with a mix of flat scenes followed by some well-written and executed scenes.

The second half is where the lag is felt and the film falls flat after a point. Too much information is fed in the last 20 minutes and as a result, the final act looked quite hurried. Over a point, it feels like you obviously know a twist is coming up. The story holds a certain level of suspense and the way each knot is untied in the screenplay is a job well done. Despite lacking believability and logic, especially the climax, the twists might sell well with the general audiences.

With more confined writing in the screenplay and better execution, Dejavu would have been a highly compelling mystery thriller, but what we have got is a lesser impactful version of the same. The problem with Dejavu is that what sounded exciting and intriguing on paper doesn't really translate with the same impact on-screen, especially the most important climax reveal.  

CAST:  Arulnithi delivers a measured performance as the undercover cop Vikram Kumar and he does his part convincingly. However, we get a sense of dejavu indeed as we have seen him in similar kind of stories and situations already in the past. It is probably time for the talented actor to shift gears and be a part of stories of other genres.

Achyuth Kumar is one of the most interesting casting choices and he pulls off the role on an impressive note. Due credits to MS Bhaskar for his excellent dubbing. Madhubala's performance is quite okay, but she doesn't seem to sit perfectly for the role of Asha Pramod. Kaali Venkat leaves his mark with the limited screen time that he gets. The rest of the fresh faces in the film could have put out better performances. 

TECHNICAL:  PG Muthiah's cinematography is definitely one of the positive aspects of Dejavu and the framings are neat and the colours contribute to the mood of the film. Ghibran's music tries to add more tension to the scenes and some of them succeed in its mission. The score might remind you of Ghibran's previous works, especially Ratsasan. The edit work is fine, except for the last segment which could have had a better treatment.     SO?  The promising story and interesting twists save Dejavu to a fair extent.

Verdict: Despite the shortcomings, Dejavu is a watchable, engaging mystery thriller, thanks to its suspenseful story!

Debutant director Arvindh Srinivasan’s Dejavu is an interesting murder mystery that keeps the ball rolling throughout and packs in some cool twists and turns. The film has a small fantasy angle to it, and explores it quite well and does a fine job with a minimalistic screenplay akin to the Malayalam thrillers we have seen in the recent past.

Dejavu is based on the story of how things go crazy a when a writer Subramani continues to pen his novel, which notes down all the incidents that take place in real life. As the police are clueless and the DGP’s daughter being kidnapped escalates things, an undercover cop Vikram (Arulnithi) walks into the scenes and dives deeper into the case. Dejavu has a very interesting first half, which has a crisp screenplay. In the second half, the film starts to deviate from the platform it has created for itself, and moves ahead only at a watchable pace, only to be picked up by the final stretch that has a couple of good reveals.

Arulnithi delivers another convincing performance in the film, playing the undercover cop. There is a lot to like in how the actor has worked on his dubbing which is sharp in this film, he shows a very good contrast to his earlier film in D Block.

The film also has fine performances from Achyuth Kumar and Kaali Venkat, but Madhoo does not come good in her role. Ragav Vijay who plays a supporting character in the second half, has done fine.

Ghibran sticks to a singular theme in the film, that augurs well on the whole. The rest of the technicalities are functional and the film itself is shot on a minimalistic scale that actually works well for it.

On the whole, Dejavu is a watchable thriller that keeps us glued to the screen with its proceedings though it does not have any great shakes. Arulnithi once again proves that he can pick good scripts, and Arvindh Srinivasan punches a neat debut with this one.  Dejavu Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

A novelist, Subramani goes to a police station while very drunk to make a complaint that he has been receiving harassing calls from the fictional characters he had created in his novels and demands police protection. Police mock his claim and send him away. Subramani goes back home and starts writing again. The next day police arrive at his house and enquire him about a call they had received from a woman named Pooja, who had called the control room saying she had been kidnapped. The woman mentioned the writer's name and location briefly before her mobile was switched off. Police check with Subramani and are shocked to see he had written about Pooja. They thrash him as they enquire about this but his neighbors come to his rescue, recording the incident and uploading it on social media. This causes embarrassment to the police. The incident catches the attention of DGP Asha who is trying to keep things tidy for PM's visit. Asha checks with the police and is initially disappointed with the way things are handled, but shocked to find that her daughter Pooja was kidnapped and she made the call to the police control room. Now things become personal and Asha meets the writer herself to enquire about pooja. Subramani says he is innocent and has no clue about the incident, but whatever he had written in his story exactly happened. Police start wondering if it's a case of ESP.

The news of Asha's missing daughter and police harassment of Subramani in this regard starts circulating in social media. Asha is thus forced to address the media denying any such claims. Police assign a constable to monitor what Subramani writes. She checks with a DGP of another state and asks for an officer to help her retrieve Pooja. The DGP mentions he will send an officer Vikram Kumar to support her. The writer opens this incident as it happens further prompting the question of his ESP power.

Vikram arrives and starts his inquiry. He suspects the writer uses some communication with the outside world with a hidden mobile. However, that does not turn out to be the case. Vikram comes to know Pooja had attended a party last evening, where she had an issue with one of the guests. Pooja then left the party midway and missing since. Vikram continues his investigation enquiring with Pooja's colleagues trying to track Pooja but in vain.

Subramani continues his story which miraculously keeps happening in real life. He predicts even a taxi number that Pooja's colleague uses. He writes of another kidnapping prompting police to enquire about other cases reported on that date.

We see a cab driver report a case of a young girl's kidnapping by some people in a BMW car. The driver who reported the case vanishes after giving a verbal statement. Asha and Vikram checked on the CCTV to identify the driver. Asha says the driver was someone she knew but was already dead.

A dead body is thrown by some thugs on the sea, the whole incident is predicted by Subramani.

We then come to know about a case closed a year ago which involved a brutal rape and murder of a woman named Janani. It is revealed that rowdy youth in the same BMW car prophesied by Subramani had kidnapped raped and murdered the woman Janani a year ago and a taxi driver Ravi was the only witness. A police team under Asha tracks down the youths, but one of them is the son of an influential central minister who had considerable power. He influences Asha to leave his son out of the picture in exchange for her promotion to DGP. Asha gladly agrees and encounters Ravi instead. She frames false charges on Ravi, making him the prime accused in the case justifying his encounter.

Vikram breaks the case down with his intelligence. He traces Pooja and rescues her from the same influential central minister's son. Vikram then identifies the mastermind behind the entire scene.

Turns out that the taxi driver Ravi had a twin brother who is a techie. He teams up with his friends and father who is none other than Subramani. Their objective is simple: bring out the facts on Ravi's case and restore his reputation. To do this they recreated the kidnapping of Janani with Pooja to create a media sensation that would bring out the facts. Vikram puts the facts in front of Asha and she orders Vikram to encounter kill everyone involved in the case as a cleanup activity.

Vikram sympathizes with Subramani and his son and kills the minister's son and releases the footage of Asha ordering the cleanup. This makes Asha lose her job and be subjected to inquiry.

In a final twist, it is revealed that Vikram is not himself but Janani's boyfriend. Though Janani is critically injured doctors predict she would recover fine, Asha fears that if Janani survives she would spill the beans on the truth about Ravi. So she kills Janani in the hospital. Her boyfriend under the name of Vikram has now taken his revenge against Asha and the minister's son.

Asha tries to explain to the angry and disgusted Pooja, but the latter refuses to talk to her. Out of guilt, Asha goes into a room, closes the door, and shoots herself dead.

అలెక్స్‌, హేమ పెళ్లి క‌థ‌...

అలెక్స్ (విదార్థ్‌) ఓ బిజినెస్‌మెన్‌. హేమ‌తో (పూర్ణ‌) పెద్ద‌లు అత‌డి పెళ్లిని జ‌రిపిస్తారు. పెళ్లికిముందు నుంచే అలెక్స్ త‌న ఆఫీస్‌లోనే ప‌నిచేసే ప‌ర్స‌న‌ల్ అసిస్టెంట్ సోఫియాతో (శుభ‌శ్రీ) రిలేష‌న్‌షిప్‌లో ఉంటాడు. సోఫియా మాయ‌లో ప‌డి హేమ‌ను నిర్ల‌క్ష్యం చేస్తుంటాడు. ఓ రోజు అలెక్స్ కోసం లంచ్ తీసుకొని అత‌డి ఆఫీస్‌కు వ‌స్తుంది హేమ‌. అలెక్స్‌, సోఫియా ఆఫీస్‌లోనే రొమాన్స్ చేసుకుంటూ హేమ కంట‌ప‌డ‌తారు.

భ‌ర్త‌పై కోపంతో ఆఫీస్ నుంచి ఇంటికి వ‌స్తోన్న టైమ్‌లో ప‌ర‌ధ్యానంగా డ్రైవింగ్ చేస్తూ రోష‌న్ (త్రిగుణ్‌) అనే వ్య‌క్తికి యాక్సిడెంట్ చేస్తుంది హేమ‌. ఆ యాక్సిడెంట్ కార‌ణంగా హేమ‌, రోష‌న్ మ‌ధ్య ఏర్ప‌డిన ప‌రిచ‌యం స్నేహంగా మారుతుంది. గాయం నుంచి కోలుకునే వ‌ర‌కు రోష‌న్ బాగోగులు చూసుకుంటుంది హేమ‌. ఆమె ఫ్రెండ్‌షిప్‌ను రోష‌న్ ప్రేమ‌గా భావిస్తాడు.

అలెక్స్‌ను ప్రేమిస్తున్న‌ట్లు న‌టిస్తూనే మ‌రో వ్య‌క్తికి ద‌గ్గ‌ర‌వుతుంది సోఫియా. ఆమె మోసాన్ని క‌నిపెట్టిన అలెక్స్ సోఫియాకు బ్రేకప్ చెబుతాడు. హేమ ప్రేమ‌ను అర్థం చేసుకున్న అలెక్స్ ఆమెకు ద‌గ్గ‌ర అవుతాడు.

అలెక్స్‌, హేమ కాపురం స‌జావుగా సాగిపోతుండ‌గా వారి జీవితంలోకి రోష‌న్ వ‌స్తాడు. అలెక్స్‌ను చంపేస్తాడు? ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఏమైంది? హేమ ప్రేమ కోసం అలెక్స్‌ను హ‌త్య చేసిన రోష‌న్ ఆ త‌ర్వాత క‌నిపించ‌కుండా పోవ‌డానికి కార‌ణం ఏమిటి? వివాహేత‌ర సంబంధాలు ఈ ముగ్గురి జీవితాల్లో ఎలాంటి క‌ల్లోలాల్ని రేపాయి? దేవుడు రూపంలో ఉన్న మ‌నిషి స‌హాయంతో కాలంలో ముందుకు వ‌చ్చిన హేమ త‌న భ‌ర్త‌ను కాపాడుకుందా? లేదా? అన్న‌దే డెవిల్ మూవీ క‌థ‌.

జోన‌ర్ చెప్ప‌డం క‌ష్ట‌మే...

కొన్ని సినిమాల‌ను పోస్ట‌ర్ చూసే ఇది ఫ‌లానా జోన‌ర్ మూవీ అని చెప్పొచ్చు. కొన్నింటిని సినిమా మొత్తం చూసిన కూడా అది ఏ జోన‌ర్ మూవీ అన్న‌ది తేల్చిచెప్ప‌డం క‌ష్టంగా ఉంటుంది. డెవిల్ అలాంటి మూవీనే.

చివ‌ర‌కు డివోష‌న‌ల్‌ ట్రైమ్ ట్రావెల్ ఎలిమెంట్‌తో సినిమాను ఎండ్ చేశాడు. సినిమా రిజ‌ల్ట్‌ను ప‌క్క‌న‌పెడితే గంట యాభై ఆరు నిమిషాల నిడివితో కూడిన సినిమాలో అన్ని జోన‌ర్స్ మిక్స్ చేసిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడి టాలెంట్‌ను మాత్రం మెచ్చుకోవ‌చ్చు.

భార్యాభ‌ర్త‌ల మ‌ధ్య సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ చుట్టూ క‌థ‌ను అల్లుకున్నాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. కొన్ని ఊహించ‌ని ప‌రిచ‌యాలు, అనుబంధాలు జీవితంలో ఎలాంటి క‌ల్లోలాన్ని రేపుతాయి? భార్యాభ‌ర్త‌ల మ‌ధ్య స‌రైన స‌ఖ్య‌త లేక‌పోతే ఏం జ‌రుగుతుంది? వివాహేత‌ర సంబంధాల వెనుక‌ త‌ప్పు ఎవ‌రిది ఉంటుంద‌న్న‌ది డెవిల్ సినిమాలో చూపించాల‌ని ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు అనుకున్నాడు.

ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు క‌న్ఫ్యూజ‌న్‌...

ఈ పాయింట్‌ను చెప్ప‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు చాలా క‌న్ఫ్యూజ్ అయ్యాడు. రోష‌న్‌, హేమ ల‌వ్ స్టోరీ టీవీ సీరియ‌ల్‌ను త‌ల‌పిస్తుంది. అలెక్స్, సోఫియా ట్రాక్‌ను రొమాంటిక్ సీన్స్‌తో నింపేశారు. హార‌ర్ ఎలిమెంట్ వ‌ల్ల సినిమాకు ఎలాంటి ఉప‌యోగం లేదు. ఉన్న రెండు, మూడు హార‌ర్ సీన్స్ భ‌య‌పెట్ట‌లేక‌పోయాయి. క్లైమాక్స్ గురించి ఎంత త‌క్కువ చెప్పుకుంటే అంత మంచిది.సినిమాను ఎలా ఎండ్ చేయాలో తెలియ‌క టైమ్ లూప్‌ను వాడుకున్న ఫీలింగ్ క‌లుగుతుంది.

పూర్ణకు ఎక్కువ మార్కులు...

సాదాసీదా క‌థ‌కు న్యాయం చేయ‌డానికి పూర్ణ‌తో పాటు విదార్థ్‌, త్రిగుణ్ చాలా క‌ష్ట‌ప‌డ్డారు. యాక్టింగ్ ప‌రంగా పూర్ణ‌కే ఎక్కువ‌గా మార్కులు ప‌డ‌తాయి. భ‌ర్త ప్రేమ‌కు దూర‌మై మ‌రో యువ‌కుడి ద‌గ్గ‌రై ప్ర‌తి క్ష‌ణం మ‌ద‌న‌ప‌డే మ‌హిళ పాత్ర‌లో ఎమోష‌న‌ల్ యాక్టింగ్‌తో మెప్పించింది.

జోవియ‌ల్ లైఫ్‌స్టైల్‌కు అల‌వాటుప‌డిన మోడ్రన్ యువ‌కుడిగా త్రిగుణ్ న‌ట‌న ఒకే అనిపిస్తుంది. అలెక్స్ పాత్ర‌ల‌కు విదార్థ్ స‌రిగా సెట్ట‌వ్వ‌లేదు. శుభ‌శ్రీ అందాల ఆర‌బోత ఓ సెక్ష‌న్ ఆడియెన్స్‌ను మెప్పిస్తుంది. ఓ గెస్ట్ పాత్ర‌లో డైరెక్ట‌ర్ మిస్కిన్ క‌నిపించాడు.ఆర్ట్ ఫిలిమ్ ఫీల్ ఇవ్వ‌డానికి కెమెరామెన్ తెగ క‌ష్ట‌ప‌డ్డాడు. ఈ మూవీతోనే డైరెక్ట‌ర్ మిస్కిన్ సంగీత ద‌ర్శ‌కుడిగా కోలీవుడ్‌లోకి ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చాడు. సీన్‌కు సంబంధం లేకుండా అత‌డి బీజీఎమ్ సాగుతుంది.

డెవిల్ పేరులో ఉన్న హార‌ర్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీలో క‌నిపించ‌దు. టాలెంటెడ్ ఆర్టిస్టులు ఉన్నా క‌థ‌, క‌థ‌నాల్లో మాత్రం కొత్త‌ద‌నం మిస్స‌యింది.
