Doctoral scholarships

UC offers a diverse range of scholarships to support students for study towards a research doctoral degree at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury. Find out more about doctoral scholarships at UC.

Whakamāramatanga | Key information

The UC Doctoral Scholarship and associated scholarships are now considered as part of the application-to-enrol process. Therefore, an application to study in a doctoral degree programme at UC is regarded as an application for most of our doctoral scholarships. Meeting the requirements for enrolment in a doctoral degree is one of the requirements for receiving a UC Doctoral Scholarship and/or an associated scholarship, and submitting the enrolment application will ensure you have provided all the required information for a scholarship application.

Along with being considered for the UC Doctoral Scholarship, applicants are also considered for all the other scholarships listed in the  regulations  of the UC scholarships for doctoral students. These scholarships are a mix of awards, which recognise success within certain categories (academic, women, Māori, Pasifika/Pacific students, etc.).

The UC Doctoral Scholarship and associated scholarships, along with other UC-funded doctoral scholarships, are grouped into three categories. These, and their co-tenability conditions, are:

  • Core  – Not co-tenable with any other Core scholarships.
  • Prestige  – Co-tenable with Core scholarships.
  • Recognition  – Co-tenable with Core scholarships and do not include additional monetary value.

To be eligible for the Prestige and Recognition scholarships, applicants must have already been awarded a Core scholarship. Because of this, Prestige and Recognition scholarships are awarded at the end of each academic year. If an applicant is awarded a Prestige scholarship, its value is added to the value of the Core Scholarship, so a stipend of $30,000 p.a. is increased to $35,000 p.a.

Please note:  These scholarships are subject to funding availability and are reviewed each year. The UC Scholarships Office administers most of these scholarships. Please search our  scholarships database  for all scholarships currently available.

UC Research Student Publication Prize

The goal of the UC Research Student Publication Prize is to encourage students to publish their work in leading peer-reviewed publications, indexed in Scopus, during their doctoral or master's studies (e.g., journal articles, book chapters, monographs, or conference proceedings). Publication during the tenure of Doctoral or Master's studies enhances student’s employment prospects and, for UC, contributes to the enhancement of international university rankings.

Guaranteed Wellington Doctoral Scholarships

Description.

These Scholarships are intended to encourage and support high achieving students to pursue full-time doctoral study (PhD) at Victoria University of Wellington.

Eligibility

The Scholarships are open to graduates of any New Zealand university who intend to enrol full time for a doctoral degree (PhD) at Victoria University of Wellington or who have commenced their doctoral study at the University. These scholarships will be for applicants who have achieved a GPA of 8.5 (based on the standard doctoral GPA calculation methods), or above in their prerequisite degree(s) which has been completed within 12 months prior to application.

Those applicants who have completed outside the 12 months will be considered on an individual merit basis but must still meet the GPA requirement. Please note: It is very important to refer to the website for regulations and further process requirements regarding an application for this scholarship.

The Guaranteed Wellington Doctoral Scholarship follows the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship regulations below.

Wellington Doctoral Scholarship regulations

To encourage postgraduate research Victoria University of Wellington offers scholarships to those about to begin their doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

All offers of Wellington Doctoral Scholarships consist of a $29,500 per annum stipend plus domestic tuition fees for up to three years.

The scholarships are offered to the top ranked candidates in any Doctoral admission and scholarship application round throughout the year. To be considered for a Wellington Doctoral Scholarship the applicant must have a strong academic record and excellent academic references, or:

  • demonstrated potential for high quality research; or
  • a record of publication in high quality journals commensurate with experience and education.

Other considerations may be taken into account such as the alignment between the applicant's research interests and those of the School, Institute or Centre. Strategic interests including collaboration between institutions or research involving potential joint initiatives with the research and business communities may also be factors in determining offers of scholarship.

Applicants other than those who have completed all their study at Victoria University of Wellington must include a copy of their academic record from other institutions with the application form.

Terms and conditions

These terms and conditions apply to Victoria Doctoral Scholarships awarded from April 2015 and Wellington Doctoral Scholarships awarded from 2020.

  • Applications are accepted from those who are eligible at the time of application, or who reasonably expect to become eligible within three months of their application, to register as a candidate for a Doctoral degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree with academic distinction equivalent to a First Class Honours degree at a New Zealand University.
  • The scholarship offer shall lapse in the event that the scholarship recipient does not gain full enrolment as a Doctoral student within 15 months of first enrolment.
  • Academic staff at Victoria University of Wellington or any other University may not hold a Wellington Doctoral Scholarship while currently employed.
  • Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit by the University Research Scholarships Committee (the Committee), a sub committee of the University Research Committee.
  • Every scholarship shall be tenable at Victoria University of Wellington for a period of up to three years except as otherwise provided in this statute. If a recipient submits within the tenure of the Scholarship, stipend payments will cease no more than one month after submission.
  • If an applicant has already been enrolled for a PhD at the University for more than three months at the time when the offer of a scholarship is made, the maximum length of tenure of the scholarship will be reduced at the discretion of the Committee.
  • Scholarship recipients are required to sign a Doctoral Research Scholarship Contract. The administrative supervisor and the primary or University supervisor will also sign the contract to indicate that they are aware of the terms and conditions of the scholarship and the contribution to the School required by this award.
  • The tenure of every scholarship shall commence on a date to be determined in each case by the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research after discussion with appropriate School and supervisor. The date of commencement shall normally be no later than six months after the scholarship has been accepted by the scholarship recipient for domestic students and nine months for international students.
  • The Committee may grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of the commencement of the scholarship for longer periods if it considers that such a deferment would benefit the scholarship recipient's programme of research and the University.
  • Tuition fees will be paid on upon registration by the Scholarships Office.
  • Scholarship recipients must inform the Faculty of Graduate Research of any other awards held.
  • Approval for the co-tenure of awards of greater than a total one third of the value of this scholarship stipend may result in a reduction in the value of the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship stipend. Faculty Research Grants are not considered under these regulations to constitute an award.
  • Scholarship recipients shall be required to maintain full time enrolment and devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment for up to a maximum of 600 hours in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor(s) and Head of School.
  • Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the Faculty of Graduate Research may, grant a scholarship recipient a suspension of their scholarship for a period not exceeding six months or a total of twelve months during the first three years of registration. As the monthly stipend is paid in advance the recipient must provide notification in advance of the suspension. In most cases the scholarship suspension will coincide with a formal suspension from their Doctoral enrolment. Scholarship recipients must ensure that any commitments related to their work experience are discussed with the Head of School before the suspension is agreed.
  • A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research within one month of the last day of the period of the suspension.
  • The scholarship recipient must complete six monthly reports outlining their progress to date and ensure that copies of these reports are available to the Scholarships Office.
  • The Committee may at any time suspend or terminate a scholarship, or require the forfeiture of such proportion of the scholarship emolument as it may determine, if the scholarship recipient is not diligently pursuing their programme of research and is not making satisfactory progress, has violated the University Statute on Conduct, or has failed to comply with any of the terms and conditions on which the scholarship was awarded and of their Victoria Doctoral Scholarship Contract.
  • At the discretion of the Committee, the application of any of the terms and conditions of a Wellington Doctoral Scholarship may be modified or relaxed in special circumstances or in order to avoid hardship to any scholarship recipient or misuse of the scholarship funding.
  • The Committee shall review these Terms and Conditions from time to time.

Application process

Applications for Guaranteed Scholarships are assessed and processed all year round. Please contact the Scholarships and Doctoral Admissions Office for further information on how to apply at [email protected]

Selection process

Final selection is made by the Victoria Research Scholarships Committee on those applicants who have been approved by the relevant School and Faculty.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome within 4 weeks of submitting a completed application.

Regulations and conditions

  • All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  • The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  • The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  • Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  • Recipients are expected to act as ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  • At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.

  • Embrace Cost-Effective Accommodation: Explore alternatives to high-rent areas. Consider shared flats, homestays, or smaller abodes outside city centres. Research government housing assistance programs if eligible.

  • Seek Out Free Entertainment: New Zealand boasts stunning natural landscapes and communities. Explore free recreational activities like hiking, swimming at public beaches, or attending free cultural events.

2024 MRIWA PhD scholarships winners supporting minerals innovation in WA

Four new awardees for 2024 will be working on challenges including decarbonisation of mining and finding new resources to maintain the industry’s productivity.

Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael today welcomed four new awardees to a PhD scholarship program funded by the State Government through the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA).

The recipients recognised by Minister Michael join a cohort of talented research students working across WA’s universities to support the future of the State’s mining industry.

Emad Al-Hemyari has been awarded the 2024 MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship, named in honour of pioneering Western Australian mining educator Professor Odwyn Jones AO.

Emad is investigating how sound waves and AI can visualise geology below the surface in real-time, making it easier for miners to discover and target hidden ore bodies.

Yamini Kannappan has been awarded the 2024 MRIWA PhD Scholarship for Women to support her work on developing cost-effective and environmentally friendly methods for extracting rare earth elements from low-grade host rocks.

Due to the exceptional quality of applications received this year, MRIWA has awarded additional PhD Scholarships to Sistine Sun , for her work on the impact of CO 2 emissions reduction targets on the WA mining industry, and to Muzammil Khan for his research into technologies supporting low-carbon steel production.

New nurses graduate from first dedicated New Zealand nursing school to open in 20 years

New Zealand's nursing crisis got a shot in the arm on Wednesday with the first-ever cohort of Waikato University's nurses graduating.

It's the first dedicated nursing school to open in New Zealand in 20 years and was designed during the pandemic to help address the shortage in primary care, community and mental health.

More from Newshub

Within months of starting the three year degree, students were already on placement ticking off more than the usual 1100 practical hours.

"Nursing students are being educated to match the needs of the population. The courage the University showed to establish a new school of nursing during a global pandemic, is just phenomenal" said Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Waikato Chief Nursing Officer Sue Hayward.

There are 28,200 nurses working full time across Health NZ's database but New Zealand still needs 8000 nurses by 2032 to keep up with population growth.

Waikato University Director of Nursing Cheryl Atherfold described the new programme as "responsive and agile" with a real emphasis on mental health and addiction.

"Some of these nurses are already meeting expectations from their communities. They have been sponsored and received financial support and they are going back there to rural communities," Atherfold said.

21-year-old Ben Scanlon is among the sixty graduates now registered as a nurse and working in community and mental health, primary care, Māori health or in hospitals.

His late father was a doctor, and his mother is a nurse.

"I've been loving the adrenaline rush within urgent care and on the GP side, learning two different areas is amazing" he told Newshub from his new workplace at Tui Medical Centre in Rototuna, Hamilton.

He admits the lure of better pay in conditions offshore in countries like Australia who've run aggressive marketing campaigns, is tempting but he's not going anywhere just yet.

"I've got to be honest it's always a temptation to go to Australia I've had classmates who want to go, others will stay but I'm really happy with the great team at Tui Medical," Scanlon said.

Dean of Health Prof Jo Lane said the new nursing programmes are a tangible expression of the University's motto: Ko Te Tangata - For the People.

"Our nursing programmes were initiated and co-developed in partnership with local health stakeholders as a direct response to the desperate shortage of nurses in our region," Prof Lane said.

Health NZ's Sue Hayward said this is one of many initiatives underway to improve recruitment and retain New Zealand nurses.

"It's up to us now to provide them with a first year of clinical practice that is so satisfying, so rewarding that they are committed to keep providing care to the population that needs their skills and knowledge."

Scanlon is under no illusions it's a workforce under pressure but said for him it's about "getting home at the end of the day knowing [he's] made an impact".

UC College of Nursing ranks highly in U.S. News & World Report rankings

headshot of Evelyn Fleider

The UC College of Nursing's programs were once again recognized by U.S. News & World Report's 2024 Best Graduate Nursing Programs rankings.

The rankings — pulled from surveying programs offered by public, private and for-profit institutions — are based on factors such as graduation rates, academic and career support services offered to students and admissions selectivity. The College's rankings include:

  • No. 11 Best Nurse Anesthesia Program , climbing 11 positions from the previous ranking and placing in the top 9% of accredited programs in the country
  • No. 37 Nurse Midwifery Program
  • No. 41 Master of Science in Nursing , placing in the top 7% of accredited programs in the country
  • No. 49 Doctor of Nursing Practice , climbing 13 positions from last year and placing in the top 13% of accredited programs in the country

“We are proud to consistently offer quality nursing education to a growing number of students across the country,” says the college’s Interim Dean Gordon Gillespie, PhD. “Our strong history of and commitment to providing quality, innovative and affordable education for both our on-campus and online students is reflected in our continued placement in these and other rankings.”

The UC College of Nursing was the first in the U.S. to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and remains a nationally recognized institution for its academic standards, diversity and inclusion efforts, technology application and research activity. Today, the college's more than 20,000 living alumni proudly reflect its tradition of leadership and core values as they work to improve the health of individuals and communities around the world.

These recognitions confirm the college’s commitment to preparing advanced-practice nurses ready to have a positive impact on their patients’ health and well-being by designing, providing and assessing quality and safe care to all.
