'Philip’s' movie review: Typical but effective feel-good drama

Philip’s screams feel-good cinema from frame one. Malayalam feel-good cinema is a distinct genre that you can identify from a long distance. Warm colour palettes, aesthetically decorated backdrops, soulful music and elegantly dressed actors who speak of rains and rainbows... these are some primary constituents. But none of that would matter if the content doesn’t let you relax and... feel good. Though not always in the right measures, Philip’s still has it all.

Alfred Kurian Joseph, one of the writers of Helen, weaves his directorial debut around a middle-aged man named Philip and his three children, Basil, Blessy and Betty. Alfred and his co-writer Mathukutty Xavier, the director of Helen, waste no time in registering the primary characters by employing a sitcom-style narrative of jumping from one episode to another.

Through a series of events, we learn that Philip is an orthodox-yet-fun dad, heavily concerned about his children’s future. Basil is the responsible big brother, who’s also secretly nursing a longtime dream with his next-door girlfriend. Blessy is the brash, impulsive teenager, who doesn’t get along with her younger sister, a Chess-loving geek. In filmmaking, they say half the battle is won if you get the casting right, and Philip’s is a testimony to that.

Mukesh shoulders the film neatly with his trademark wits and affable persona. He is ably supported by the other three main actors, Noble Thomas, Navani Devanand, and Quinn Vipin. Noble is mostly effective, except during a heated confrontation scene with Mukesh, where he struggles to get his emotions right. Despite being newcomers, young Navani and Quinn display no signs of inexperience and manage to leave a lasting impression.

Apart from some occasional counters and recall of Mukesh’s popular dialogues, the first half lacks genuinely funny moments despite having immense potential. For most part, the writers follow familiar beats before throwing in the conflict from nowhere—quite literally. I bet you won’t see that coming. But fortunately, after that sudden jolt, the narrative becomes more organic and you start developing an emotional connection with the characters.

You see how they gradually break down in the face of crisis and then pick themselves up. Briefly, the film turns serious, but the makers still restrict themselves from going completely melodramatic. They instead believe in easy solutions, which they achieve through heartwarming music (who better than Hesham now?), a few smiles here and a few glances there. But it still should be admitted that this Vineeth Sreenivasan-esque mood can get a bit too saccharine to endure.

Philip’s will perhaps be best remembered as a fitting swansong for Innocent. The late actor does what he does best—playing the good Samaritan. As Mani Uncle, he is the friendly father-figure who is always there for the family. It’s a role tailor-made for him as he once again shares a beautiful rapport with Mukesh. As the end credits roll with a special compilation video of Innocent’s best works, it’s hard not to get emotional. A feel-good finale indeed.

പ്ര കടനം കൊണ്ട് പലകുറി സിനിമാലോകത്തെ ഞെട്ടിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഉർവശിയും പാർവതിയും, ദേശീയതലത്തിൽ പുരസ്കാരത്തിനർഹമായ തിരക്കഥ, 'കറി& സയനൈഡ്' എന്ന അന്താരാഷ്ട്രതലത്തിൽ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഡോക്യുമെന്ററിയുടെ സംവിധായകൻ്റെ ആദ്യ ഫീച്ചർ ഫിലിം. പ്രഖ്യാപനം മുതൽക്കേ സിനിമാസ്വാദകർ ആകാംക്ഷയിലും പ്രതീക്ഷയിലും കാത്തിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ക്രിസ്റ്റോ ടോമിയുടെ 'ഉള്ളൊഴുക്ക്' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിനായി. പ്രതീക്ഷകൾക്കും മുകളിൽ ഒരു ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന, ഉള്ളുലയ്ക്കുന്ന സിനിമ അനുഭവം പ്രേക്ഷകന് സമ്മാനിക്കുകയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രം.

കുട്ടനാട്ടിലെ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന അവിചാരിത സംഭവങ്ങളിലൂന്നിയാണ് ചിത്രം പുരോ​ഗമിക്കുന്നത്. അഞ്ജു, ലീലാമ്മ എന്നീ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് ചിത്രത്തിൻ്റെ സഞ്ചാരം. അഞ്ജുവായി പാർവതി തിരുവോത്ത് വേഷമിടുമ്പോൾ അഞ്ജുവിന്റെ അമ്മായിഅമ്മ ലീലാമ്മയായി ഉർവശി എത്തുന്നു. അഞ്ജുവിൻ്റെ ഭർത്താവ് തോമസ് ആയി എത്തുന്നത് പ്രശാന്ത് മുരളിയാണ്. അലൻസിയർ, അർജുൻ രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ, ജയാ കുറുപ്പ് എന്നിവരും ചിത്രത്തിലുണ്ട്.

താത്പര്യമില്ലാത്ത കല്യാണം കഴിച്ച് ലീലാമ്മയുടെ കുടുംബത്തിലെത്തുകയാണ് അഞ്ജു. ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിൻ്റെ മാനസികാവസ്ഥയിലൂടെ കഥപറഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന ചിത്രം വളരെവേ​ഗം മറ്റൊരു ദിശയിലേയ്ക്ക് സഞ്ചരിക്കാൻ ആരംഭിക്കുകയാണ്. നീറുന്ന മനസ്സുമായി കഴിയുന്ന അഞ്ജുവിനെ മകളായി തന്നെ കാണുന്നയാളാണ് ലീലാമ്മ. പക്ഷേ കാലം ഇരുവർക്കുമിടയിൽ കലങ്ങിമറിഞ്ഞൊരു പുഴയായി അവതരിക്കുകയാണ്. അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി കുടുംബത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന ഒരു മരണം ഇരുവർക്കുമിടയിൽ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന അകലവും കലഹവും ഒക്കെയാണ് പിന്നീട് ചിത്രത്തെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിക്കുന്നത്.

തെറ്റും ശരികളും ഓരോ മനുഷ്യന്റെയും കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുകളിലാണെന്ന് ചിത്രം പറഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നതുണ്ട്. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളെ, പറഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നവയെ ഒന്നും ​ഗ്ലോറിഫെെ ചെയ്യാനോ ന്യായീകരിക്കാനോയുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങൾ ചിത്രത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്നില്ലെന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. സിനിമ ആരംഭിച്ചുകഴിയുമ്പോൾ അഞ്ജുവിന്റെയും ലീലാമ്മയുടെയും ലോകമാണ് പിന്നീട്. ഓരോ രം​ഗങ്ങളിലും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വീർപ്പുമുട്ടൽ പ്രേക്ഷകരിലേയ്ക്കും എത്തിക്കാൻ സംവിധായകന് സാധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

സുഷിൻ ശ്യാമിൻ്റെ പശ്ചാത്തല സം​ഗീതമാണ് സിനിമയുടെ ആത്മാവ്. ഓരോ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലും വ്യത്യസ്ത തലങ്ങളിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ ത്രില്ലടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സുഷിൻ ശ്യാമിൻ്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഈ ചിത്രത്തിനും മുതൽക്കൂട്ടാവുന്നുണ്ട്. ഉള്ളൊഴുക്കെന്ന ചിത്രത്തിനൊപ്പം ഒഴുകുകയാണ് ചിത്രത്തിൻ്റെ ​സം​ഗീതം. സിനിമയുടെ ഓരോ ഘട്ടത്തിലെ മൂഡിനോടും ചേർന്നുനിൽക്കുന്ന പശ്ചാത്തലസം​ഗീതം കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുമായി പ്രേക്ഷകന് അടുപ്പമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിൽ നിർണായക സ്വാധീനമാകുന്നുണ്ട്. ഷെഹനാദ് ജലാലിൻ്റെ ഛായാ​ഗ്രഹണവും അഭിനന്ദനം അർഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

സംഭാഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് പുറമെ നിശബ്ദതയും ചിത്രത്തിൽ ഭം​ഗിയായി സംവിധായകൻ ഉപയോ​ഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ അസാമാന്യപ്രകടനം ശക്തമായ തിരക്കഥയ്ക്ക് ലഭിച്ച അം​ഗീകാരമായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് പറയാം. പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച പാർവതിയും ഉർവശിയും ഓരോ രം​ഗങ്ങളിലും അഭിനയപാടവം വിളിച്ചുകാട്ടുന്നുണ്ട്. ഒരുപാട് മാനസിക സംഘർഷങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോകുന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തെ പാർവതി ഭം​ഗിയാക്കി. കുറച്ച് കാലത്തിനുശേഷം ലഭിച്ച ഈ ശക്തമായ കഥാപാത്രത്തിലൂടെ ​ഗംഭീര തിരിച്ചുവരവാണ് ഉർവശി നടത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മാറിവരുന്ന ഭാവങ്ങളിലൂടെയും സംഭാഷണങ്ങളിലൂടെയും ഒക്കെ കാഴ്ചക്കാരൻ്റെ ഉള്ളുലയ്ക്കാൻ നടിക്കാവുന്നുണ്ട്. തങ്ങളുടെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഉള്ളിലെ നോവ് പ്രേക്ഷകരിലേയ്ക്കും പകരാൻ ഉർവശിക്കും പാർവതിക്കും അനായാസം സാധിച്ചുവെന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം.

വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കം ഒരു നാടിനെ എങ്ങനെ ബാധിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിനെ സാക്ഷിയാക്കി സംവിധായകൻ വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്നുണ്ട്. മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ വാശിയും സ്നേഹത്തിൻ്റെ പലമുഖങ്ങളും ഒക്കെ ചിത്രം പകർത്തുന്നു. ചില യഥാർഥ സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ ചുവടുപിടിച്ച് നി​ഗൂഢത നിറച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് ചിത്രം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത്. ചിത്രത്തിൻ്റെ ടെെറ്റിൽ പോലെതന്നെ പോലെ ഓരോ രംഗവും ആസ്വാദകൻ്റെ ഉള്ളിലേക്കങ്ങനെ ഒഴുകുകയാണ്.

റോണി സ്‌ക്രൂവാലയും ഹണി ട്രെഹാനും അഭിഷേക് ചൗബേയും ചേർന്ന് ആർ എസ് വി പിയുടെയും മക്ഗഫിൻ പിക്‌ചേഴ്‌സിന്റെയും ബാനറുകളിലാണ് ചിത്രം നിർമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഉള്ളുലയ്ക്കുന്ന, മനസ്സിനെ തൊടുന്ന 'ഉള്ളൊഴുക്ക്' തിയേറ്ററിൽ നിന്നുതന്നെ കണ്ട് ആസ്വദിക്കാനാകുന്ന ചിത്രമാണ്.

ഈയടുത്തു കാലത്ത് മലയാളത്തിൽ ഇറങ്ങിയ ത്രില്ലർ സിനിമകൾക്കെല്ലാം ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതയുണ്ട്. ഇനിയൊരു രണ്ടാം ഭാഗമുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന വ്യക്തമായ സൂചന നൽകിയാണ് അവ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്. സമാനമായ പ്രതീക്ഷകൾ നൽകിക്കൊണ്ടാണ് നവാഗതനായ സംജാദ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഗോളം എന്ന സിനിമയും പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ മുൻപിലെത്തുന്നത്. അധികം വലിച്ചു നീട്ടലുകളില്ലാതെ ചടുലമായി കഥ പറഞ്ഞു പോകുന്ന ഗോളം, പുതിയ കാലത്തിന്റെ ത്രില്ലർ സിനിമ തന്നെയാണ്. 

പ്രേക്ഷക ഹൃദയം കീഴടക്കുന്ന ‘ലിറ്റിൽ ഹാർട്സ്’: റിവ്യൂ

അസാധാരണമായ ഒരു കുറ്റകൃത്യം നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്ന പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് സിനിമയുടെ ട്രെയിലർ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്. ആ കുറ്റകൃത്യത്തിന്റെ വിശദാംശങ്ങളും ശ്രീകാന്ത് മുരളി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പൊലീസ് ഓഫിസർ വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിങ്ങനെയാണ്– "ഓഗസ്റ്റ് മൂന്നാം തിയതി രാവിലെ 10 മണിക്ക് വി ടെക് എന്ന സ്ഥാപനത്തിലെ ശുചിമുറിയിൽ മരണപ്പെട്ടു കിടക്കുന്നതായി ഒന്നാം സാക്ഷികൾ കാണപ്പെട്ട കാര്യത്തിന്റെ അന്വേഷണത്തിൽ നിന്നും ടിയാന്റെ മരണത്തിൽ മറ്റു സംശയങ്ങളൊന്നും ഇല്ലായെന്ന് വെളിവായിട്ടുള്ളതാണ്". ആർക്കും വലിയ സംശയങ്ങളൊന്നും ജനിപ്പിക്കാത്ത ഒരു മരണത്തിന്റെ പിന്നാലെ പോകുന്നത് ആരാണ്? അയാൾ കണ്ടെത്തുന്ന രഹസ്യങ്ങളെന്താണ്? ഈ ചോദ്യങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള ഉത്തരമാണ് 'ഗോളം' എന്ന സിനിമ. 

വി.ടെക് എന്ന ഐടി കമ്പനിയിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നവരുടെ ഒരു ദിവസം തുടങ്ങുമ്പോഴുള്ള ഓട്ടങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. പേരെഴുതി കാണിക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള വെറും ദൃശ്യങ്ങളല്ല അവയെന്ന് സിനിമ മുൻപോട്ടു പോകുമ്പോൾ പ്രേക്ഷകർ തിരിച്ചറിയും. കണ്ട കാഴ്ചകളെ മനസിലേക്ക് റിവൈൻഡ് ചെയ്യിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്, സിനിമയിലെ പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനൊപ്പം പ്രേക്ഷകരും കുറ്റവാളിയെ തിരയും. എന്നാൽ, ഒളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ആ കുറ്റവാളിയെ കണ്ടെത്തുന്നതിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നില്ല ഈ ചിത്രമെന്നതാണ് ഗോളത്തെ മറ്റു ത്രില്ലറുകളിൽ നിന്നു വേറിട്ടു നിറുത്തുന്നത്. 

ഫ്രാഗ്രന്റ് നേച്ചർ ഫിലിം ക്രിയേഷൻസിന്റെ ബാനറിൽ ആനും സജീവും നിർമിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ കരുത്ത് ചടുലമായ കഥ പറച്ചിലാണ്. സിനിമയുടെ സംവിധായകനായ സംജാദും പ്രവീൺ വിശ്വനാഥുമാണ് സിനിമയുടെ രചന നിർവഹിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. പിരിമുറുക്കത്തോടെ വെളിപ്പെടുന്ന കഥയെ അതിന്റെ എല്ലാ തീവ്രതയോടെയും പ്രേക്ഷകരിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നതിൽ സംവിധായകൻ വിജയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. സാങ്കേതികമായി സിനിമയെന്ന മാധ്യമത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളറിയുന്ന സംവിധായകനാണ് സംജാദ് എന്ന് 'ഗോളം' തെളിയിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യ സിനിമയുടെ പതർച്ചകളില്ലാതെ സിനിമയൊരുക്കാൻ സംജാദിനു കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പം ശക്തവും സജീവവുമായ സാന്നിധ്യമാണ് സിനിമയിൽ ചെറിയ വേഷങ്ങളിലെത്തിയ അഭിനേതാക്കൾ. അവരാണ് സത്യത്തിൽ സിനിമയെ മുൻപോട്ടു കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്നത്. എല്ലാവർക്കും ലഭിച്ച സ്ക്രീൻ സ്പേസ് മികവാർന്ന രീതിയിൽ അവർ പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ അൻസൽ പള്ളുരുത്തി, പ്രവീൺ വിശ്വനാഥ്, അനു അനന്തൻ, നൈനാൻ കെ.അലക്സ്, സഞ്ജയ്, ഉണ്ണി ദേശപോഷിണി, ഏകാ, ആശാ മഠത്തിൽ, ശീതൾ ജോസഫ്, ഗായത്രി സതീഷ്, ആരിഫ ഹിന്ദ്, ഗൗരി പാർവതി, അഞ്ജന ബാബു, എല എസ്.നയന, റിൽന, രമാദേവി, പ്രിയ ശ്രീജിത്ത് എന്നിവരെല്ലാം പ്രത്യേക അഭിനന്ദനം അർഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. സിനിമയിൽ ശക്തമായ സാന്നിധ്യമാകാൻ ഇവർക്കോരുരുത്തർക്കും കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

Abraham Ozler Review: An All-New Jayaram In A Same Old Revenge Drama Disguised As A Serial Killer Thriller

Abraham Ozler becomes the second film in the last two years to begin with a not-so subtle narration of Thakshaka’s story, in which he kills King Parikishit by taking the disguise of a worm. If Mammootty’s Puzhu transplanted this tale into the life of a present-day casteist, Ozler uses it ornamentally, giving you the feeling that there’s a lot going on in this police procedural. Midhun Manuel Thomas, who wrote and directed the atmospheric Anjaam Pathira (2020), returns to familiar territory and begins Abraham Ozler too with a series of cleverly written (and shot) murders. The tone isn’t as frightening, but the writing is detailed enough to hook us, right from the first drop of blood. 

What adds to its originality is how much of the film revolves around the medical profession. This time, Midhun chooses to write the screenplay and dialogues but relies on Dr.Randheer Krishnan’s expertise as a medical professional for plot and story. This in-turn leads us to fresh territory, including the workings of a medical college and its multi-disciplined student life. But beyond setting, it also throws open the film to a new level of detail with multiple characters explaining very specific medical procedures, at times to a point beyond comprehension.

But you have to go with it because the larger framework of the film is still engaging, even if you feel like specific cases use up far too much screentime. An example of this comes in the way the film uses Dileesh Pothan ’s character. We spend considerable amount of time assuming his importance because it’s being played by a familiar actor and because his character’s name is central to the main investigation. But when the film chooses to later repurpose his sub-plot merely as a decoy, it begins to feel convenient and disingenuous. 

You might feel the same about the character being played by Jayaram. Now it’s clear as day that the much-loved actor appears before us with a performance that’s not only absorbing but also a career-first. Rarely have we seen Jayaram observe such restraint and discipline without any expression getting punctuated further with a little extra, like he did in his earlier films. 

But the issue comes in the form of the writing that has gone in to the person that is Abraham Ozler. What begins at first as a character study about a troubled police officer, soon transforms almost entirely into a generic revenge drama. The film begins with a doctor informing us about Ozler’s mental health issues with the man suffering from depression and the ensuing insomnia as a result of a traumatic incident. But even when you finish the movie, you never sense any resolutions to his state of mind, nor do we know anything more about him than we did at the start of the movie. Even his hallucinations, which start off cleverly, remain ornamental, without it either helping or hampering his ability to solve the case at hand.

And then you get into the issues the movie struggles with when it has to bear the weight of a mega cameo in the second half. The cleverness of the film never really comes back once it goes into this chapter. Not only does the cameo distract us from the urgency of the case but it continues to linger in our minds when the movie moves into a massive 40-minute flashback that is set in the 80’s. Which means that even when you’re sort of engrossed enough to understand the motive behind the series of murders and why it took so long to happen, you’re still waiting to see what the superstar will do when he returns post flashback.   

These are some of the issues you might face with a film that has so many things to say but not enough time to say it all. But even so, Midhun remains so strong as a filmmaker that you still expect him to spring surprises. He does and you get a very inventive twist that brings back a lot of the lost momentum, even if it feels a little too late. It’s as though he is so clever in the way he packs in so much that you seldom get the time to pause and reflect on why these events are happening in this order or why it’s so easy to get even tough characters to open up and confess about their past without the need for any real pressure.  

Either way, it’s never really about what it’s trying to say as much as it is about how well Midhun is able to say it. By reinventing Jayaram as an actor and by infusing so much information into a stereotypical thriller, Abraham Ozler remains fairly engaging even if you’ve seen it all before. In medical terms (or in the words of most characters in the film), it’s as though the film suffers from acute refractive myopia. But in common parlance, the film forgets the larger picture in its effort to give us great individual scenes.

Oliver Twist's (Indrans), family consists of his wife Kuttiyamma (Manju Pillai), his aging father (Kainakari Thankaraj), and sons Antony (Sreenath Bhasi) and Charles (Naslen K Gafoor). Antony, who is a one-film-old director, is struggling to finish his second script. He prefers staying in the city but returns home only to get rid of his creative block. Charles, on the other hand, is a vlogger. The movie focuses on technology-challenged Oliver's struggles to keep up with his tech-savvy sons.

Script And Direction

Rojin Thomas, the young director who rose to fame with the popular films Philips And The Monkey Pen and Jo And The Boy , is back to film-making with Home . The director has succeeded in narrating a simple yet relatable storyline effectively, thus creating a completely feel-good and positive movie experience. The excellent casting deserves a special mention.

The well-written, well-conceived scenes (especially the scenes involving Oliver and his family) and dialogues make Home instantly relatable. A special kudos to the writer-director for touching on some highly relevant topics including mental health. The narrative is constructed in the most simplistic manner without throwing many twists or surprises, which makes the film an uncomplicated watch. But still, Home succeeds in leaving an impression on the viewers.

But the same positive aspects can also be coined as the negative aspects of the film. The highly predictable narrative, along with the excess duration, make it difficult for the viewers to watch the film in one stretch. Also, the film tends to get preachy towards its climax, thus diluting the overall impact. However, Home definitely provides a much-needed touch of positivity, amidst these tough times.

Indrans, the senior actor wins hearts yet again with his amazing performance as the father who longs for his son's acceptance. The actor has portrayed the unconditional love, helplessness, and innocence of his character with absolute ease. Manju Pillai, who plays Kuttiyamma, once again reminds us that she is an extremely underrated talent, with her impeccable performance.

Sreenath Bhasi has played the flawed-yet-relatable Antony to near perfection. The rest of the star cast, including Naslen K Gafoor, Kainakari Thankaraj, Maniyanpilla Raju, KPAC Lalitha, Johny Antony, Vijay Babu, and others, are good in their respective roles.

Neil D' Cunha, the cinematographer has done a great job with the visuals, that has set the perfect backdrop for the feel-good family drama. Rahul Subrahmanian has scored with a beautiful background score, but the songs are forgettable.

Home is a heartwarming tale of relationships, that provides a much-needed touch of positivity. If you are ready to tolerate the excess duration, this multi-starrer is a perfect watch for this Onam season.

'Thalavan' movie review: An investigative thriller that keeps viewers guessing

With Biju Menon and Asif Ali in cop roles, the film is like untangling tight knots

With Biju Menon and Asif Ali in cop roles, this investigative thriller is like untangling the tight knots surrounding a murder and the loopholes within.  And the duo have managed to pull off the roles of the "men in uniform" pretty convincingly.

Biju Menon was last seen in a police drama when he essayed the role of a constable in the comedy-drama ‘Thundu.’ This time, he is a Circle Inspector who is no pushover, a serious officer with little time for enjoyment. The occasional build-up to his character, Jayashankar, with an acrimonious approach holds central to the plot.  

Sub Inspector Karthik Vasudevan (Asif Ali) who is an idealistic cop, throws himself into some bitter rifts with Jayashankar. The character differences established through the narrative, make the audience believe this might be yet another battle for power between the two cops. But the story builds to a different angle as the plot develops. 

The thread of the story can get confusing in several instances, with numerous character involvements and past events, but clarity is later established in the plot as the mystery unfolds. The first half of the story is an introduction to the life of the two cops and the occasional rifts that they encounter with each other. Even though a lot of dots are left disjointed in the first half, the plot swiftly travels through the frames of past and present to connect the links of several characters to the missing puzzle in the story. 

The role of female characters is also notable with Anusree playing the character of Remya and Miya George as the wife of Jayashankar. 

Just like other cop films in the Malayalam cinema, this movie also brings to light the question of power and the limitations of working under the superior police officers. The background of the film slowly attains a grimness towards the second half with an eerie environment, to accelerate the mystery attached to the story. The occasional involvement of dim lights in the background towards the end, makes it quite baffling. 

Overall, the story is less predictable making it a decent investigative thriller. The story can also be considered as an example of whodunnit, where the identity of the murderer is revealed not until the story reaches the end.

'Queen Elizabeth' review | Meera Jasmine, Narain star in vibrant, slightly quirky film

Imagine the boss who threatens to cut your salary just because you stepped out of the office for 10 minutes. Or the arrogant friend who cuts you off from her life simply because you are inconsequential. That's Elizabeth Angel rolled into one for you, the devil lady too full of herself to give you a second glance.

Starring Meera Jasmine as the titular character, 'Queen Elizabeth' is a fun, slightly unconventional tale centred around an urban woman, who faces some lows in her life. Though not as classy as Miranda Priestly in 'Devil Wears Prada' or quirky as Priya S Nair in 'My Boss', Elizabeth Angel is a woman with some mystery who many would love to decode as the film progresses.

When Elizabeth, who runs an architecture firm, learns she is ill, she decides to turn her life around, interacting with the people she never acknowledged before. She even becomes extremely generous, donating huge sums of money to charity causes. The plotline is pretty basic and not as ambitious as M Padmakumar's previous outings, including 'Joseph', but for someone who is better known for crime thrillers, he has done a pretty good job with this feel-good genre.

Just when you get invested in Elizabeth's emotions, the makers deliver a twist, that might leave you dissatisfied. The film is engaging, nevertheless. Much of the credit goes to the lead characters, played by Meera and Narain, who are pairing up once again after their wonderful outings in the evergreen film 'Achuvinte Amma' and 'Minnaminnikoottam'. Narain's boyish charm is still intact, and the audience is taken on a ride down memory lane when the song 'Ente Khalbile Vennilavu Nee' from 'Classmates' plays in the background as the camera zooms in on him.

Queen Elizabeth touches briefly upon certain taboos like carnal desire in a woman, which is praise-worthy. The treatment, however, could have been better. Overall, the movie is quite charming and will work for those who prefer watching films in the romantic comedy genre.

‘Pookkaalam’ movie review: A feel-good family entertainer with a novel theme

Ganesh raj’s film, centring on a nearly hundred years old couple, is a feel-good family entertainer with a novel theme that ends rather tamely and predictably.

Happiness is Ganesh Raj’s calling card; one would struggle to find an unhappy moment in his work. Even the biggest of crises would seem rather inconsequential when treated light-heartedly. In the world that he envisions, warm colours pop out of every other frame. Light, feel-good music goes on and on in the background. Tears are mostly out of happiness, rather than sorrow. For that matter, his debut movie itself was titled Aanandam (happiness).

While Aanandam was set around a group of youngsters on a college trip, in his sophomore work Pookkaalam , it is the older generation — a couple who are nearly a hundred years old and have been married for eighty years — who takes centre stage. On the day of their granddaughter Elsy’s (Annu Antony) betrothal, Ittoop (Vijayaraghavan) accidentally discovers an old letter written fifty years ago. The letter threatens to cast a cloud on the happy occasion, bringing up to the surface the family’s buried secrets

Pookkaalam (Malayalam)

The novel theme is what drives much of the movie, but Ganesh, who has also scripted it, ensures that it does not tread on terrains that are too hot to handle, just stopping short every time the movie threatens to slip out of the feel-good zone. Well, it is not wrong to play to your strengths. It is the kind of material that could have ended up as a heart-wrenching tale if handled by someone else.

Much of Pookkaalam focuses on the warm relationship between Ittoop and his wife Kochuthresia (KPAC Leela), and the large extended family around them, at present. Yet, it takes periodic shifts to the past, of their early days of struggles and personal losses, which gives us an idea of the impact that the crisis would have on the close-knit family. The crisis also shines a light on the unpleasant episodes that people wilfully forget to keep the ship sailing smoothly. People who seem sober in their old age might have done terrible things in the past. At one point, Kochuthresia ominously tells Ittoop, “We have been living in this house for eighty years. If we dig deep around here, we might find uncomfortable things.”

Ganesh attempts to balance every emotional moment quickly with a light-hearted scene, some working and some don’t. For instance, a running joke involving a junior advocate (Basil Joseph) and his old friend (Vineeth Sreenivasan), who is now a judge, seems a bit forced. Despite all the younger cast of actors around them, Vijayaraghavan and KPAC Leela hog all the limelight with their moving performances as the couple who are facing a crisis late in their lives. In the moments that he acts stern, Vijayaraghavan brings back memories of his father N.N.Pillai’s iconic character ‘Anjooran’ in Godfather .
