Macaulay Honors College

About the program.

The Macaulay Honors College (MHC) was founded in 2001 by former Chancellor Matthew Goldstein to attract exceptional students to the City University of New York. As a CUNY-wide program,  Macaulay Honors College  currently includes Honors Centers at eight of the senior colleges of CUNY as well as a central building on Manhattan’s upper west side.

Students admitted to Macaulay have dual affiliation with the Honors College and their CUNY home campus. The MHC program at The City College of New York helps students achieve the highest levels of academic accomplishment, and fosters cross-campus community, career exploration, service, and leadership.

Macaulay students at City College can expect the following benefits:

Full-tuition scholarships for New York State residents*

Access to Macaulay’s opportunities fund to pursue study abroad and other experiential learning research and interning experiences

Enrollment in special interdisciplinary Honors seminars using NYC as resource and text

A "cultural passport" providing entrance to New York City’s many cultural venues and museums, including concert, theater, and art venues

Intensive mentoring and advisement from dedicated honors advisors and faculty

First-day registration privileges

Use of the Honors Lounge for study and social events

Peer mentoring from experienced upper-level students in the program

*The scholarship covers tuition (university Fees are covered out-of-pocket by the student). The amount of the scholarship is equal to tuition cost less any PELL, TAP, NYS HESC Scholarships, NYC Council Merit Scholarship, and other tuition-only scholarships received, if applicable. To receive the MHC scholarship, students must meet CUNY NYS residency requirements. For out-of-state students, c lick here for CUNY Tuition and Fees.

In order to be considered for the Macaulay Scholarship, you must complete the free application for  Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a  NYS Tuition Assistance Program  (TAP) application.

Eligibility

The Macaulay Honors College program at City College admits only new first-year students. Admission is highly competitive. Students in any major may be accepted into Macaulay. Students accepted into both the Macaulay Honors College and the Sophie Davis School for Biomedical Education B.S./M.D. program (which requires a special application) cannot enroll in both programs and must select one.

Admission

Students must apply by special application, AVAILABLE ONLY ONLINE at  https://macaulay.cuny.edu/admissions/applying-to-macaulay/ .  Please check the Macaulay website for application deadlines which vary from year to year. Students applying to the Macaulay Honors College need not file a regular admission application to CUNY. This is an “all-purpose application” applying to The Macaulay Honors College, the Honors Program at City College, and the City College of New York application.

Curricular and Extra-curricular Requirements

All Macaulay Honors College students take four special interdisciplinary seminars focusing on NYC and fulfill additional liberal arts general education requirements in the City College Honors program (depending on their major). In the upper division (junior and senior years), students may take additional honors college sponsored courses and must complete a senior capstone project. Students also must complete at least one of the following—an interning, research, or study abroad experience. Macaulay is committed to community service and students are required to document a minimum of 30 hours of volunteer service before completing their four-year program.

Retention Criteria

To maintain good standing in the program, students are expected to achieve a minimum term G.P.A. of 3.3. for each of the first three semesters, and a minimum term G.P.A. of 3.5 for each ensuing semester until graduation.

If you were eligible for HSE Regents exemptions, be sure to submit your high school transcript along with your HSE Diploma. If you received an equivalency diploma outside of NYS, contact the appropriate State Education Department for your record.  Visit gedtestingservice.com to learn more .

Home Schooled Students

Generally, your home-schooling curriculum should adhere to your school district’s preliminary education requirement for earning a high school diploma. This will allow us to review your entire record as a home-schooled student within the context of the academic requirements as outlined above. Read More

If you are a New York State resident who received home schooling, a transcript outlining all completed coursework with grades earned is required. You must also submit a letter from the superintendent of your school district or comparable chief school administrator certifying that you have completed the equivalent of a New York State four-year high school program through home schooling.

If you are a senior who is currently completing a home-school program, you must submit a letter from the superintendent of your school district certifying that you are currently completing a program that is equivalent to a NYS four-year high school program.  Upon completion, please submit a letter verifying that you have successfully completed the program.

If you cannot obtain the letter from the high school district, you must obtain a High School Equivalency diploma. See the High School Equivalency section below.

If you are an out-of-state resident who received home-schooling, a state-issued diploma is required. If you have not obtained a state-issued diploma, you must obtain your High School Equivalency diploma. ( for more information on how to obtain a High School Equivalency score )

Deadlines vary from program to program. So, to ensure that your application is submitted on time, review the deadline page for each department. You can view deadlines on our Program Search page . Make a calendar with any upcoming deadlines. Remember to include standardized testing which can take six months, as well as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and financial aid, which you can apply to even before being accepted to the school.

Financial Aid

The Office of Financial Aid at CUNY works hard to ensure that higher education is affordable and accessible to all our students. Even before you apply, we recommend that you file your FAFSA. Funding is usually on a first come, first serve basis. Your FAFSA is the document that allows your college to determine your eligibility for scholarships, grants, loans and work study. The Financing Your Graduate Education page contains much more information about the different types of funding, contact information for each financial aid office, and  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) .

Standardized Tests

Your program may require you to take a standardized test. Make sure you check the requirements. You may have to take one of the following exams. You should take your exams no later than the five or six months before you apply giving you the appropriate amount of time to receive your results and then retake the test if necessary.

When taking your exams, make sure you indicate the schools that you would like the scores to be sent to.

  • GRE – The Graduate Record Examinations (usually required for admission into programs in the social sciences, humanities etc.)
  • GMAT – The Graduate Management Admission Test (required for admission into business school)
  • NYS Teachers Certification – New York State requires candidates in Education programs to take certain tests for admissions.
  • LSAT – Law School Admissions Test (required for admission into Law School)
  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language (required for all international students unless you obtained your bachelor’s degree in an English-speaking country such as the U.K, the Netherlands or some Caribbean countries, please refer to the school admissions website for more information)

Prepare for exams

The length of time to prepare for the exam will vary depending on the person. When you learn which test your program may require, follow these steps to help you prepare:

  • Take a diagnostic test to measure your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you focus on the areas that you need improvement upon and give you an idea of how long you will need to study.
  • There are many external resources available to help you prepare for your examination, including apps for your phone, books, and websites. You can also enroll in a preparation course which will vary in price and duration. Choose the one that is best for you
  •   Baruch College and Lehman College offer GMAT and GRE Test Preparation Courses.

Personal Statement

Your personal statement can vary depending on which program you are applying to. The application may call for you to answer specific questions or you may be given little direction. This is all to help the program get a sense of who you are as an applicant, your unique abilities, your accomplishments, your past experiences, your personal and career goals and also how you think this particular program will allow you to reach these goals. You want to start writing three months prior to submitting your application . This will allow ample time to ask for critiques and for you to edit your work.

Letters of Recommendation

You will need two or more recommenders for your application. Make sure you know who your program expects a recommendation from (your professors, a supervisor, etc). You want to reach out to possible recommenders at least a month before you submit your application to give them adequate time to write your recommendation letter. You should pick someone who you have a professional relationship with and who can genuinely speak to your capabilities to succeed in the program.

Although the G.P.A requirements vary, in general, the minimum G.P.A. to enroll in a graduate program is a 3.0. Some programs may also require you to have taken a certain amount of credits or particular classes in a related field prior to beginning your degree. Make sure you go over the requirements and your qualifications and contact the program advisor if you have any questions. If needed, you may be able to take non-degree courses to fulfill prerequisite coursework. These courses will not count towards your graduate degree but will help you gain entry into a program.

International Students should pay particular attention to the international students’ page and the school admissions website to make sure that they are adhering to all the instructions and requirements for submitting a transcript from another country .

Your resume is used to give the graduate committee more information of why you would be a good candidate for the program. It should paint a picture of your academic career and any work experience that would enhance your experience in an advanced degree. It should not be too long (one to two pages) but list any extracurricular activities, research assistant work, honors and awards, work experience, volunteer opportunities, and any other relevant experience.

Supplemental Materials

Some colleges or programs will request that you submit additional essays, writing samples, portfolios, screenplays or short films as part of your application. Please pay attention to the specific program requirements because they are individualized to each program. Check with the program you are applying to for requirement details.

Additional Statement or Addendum

This is an additional opportunity to explain discrepancies or unique situations that may hurt your graduate school application. It is a brief statement that may address a low Standardized test score or grade and explain how/why this is not an accurate reflection of your abilities. Students must be very careful in adding this section as it is meant to address any questions or hesitations by the admissions professional when reviewing your application.

If you were educated outside of the United States and English is not your first language, you will have to take one of the following exams. Check with your desired campus to confirm which exam is accepted.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)

Find out more about TOEFL requirements .

In addition, your official documents may need to be translated before you apply. You should allow additional time to complete this process. Check with the college you are applying to for specific details.

Please fill out the fields below and submit the form. Some information is required and marked with asterisks. You will not be able to submit the form without filling the required fields. Please make sure that Email and Verify Email should match with each other.

The New Teaching and Learning Discipline Council

April 4, 2024 | Academic Affairs

The Teaching and Learning Discipline Council will hold its inauguration meeting this semester.  This new body is an effort to concert the voices of colleagues across the university who play a leading role in educational development work on their campus, who deepen collaborative and advisory relationships with faculty around questions of pedagogy, and contribute to faculty efforts for shared and informed governance throughout the university.

The CUNY Discipline Councils aim to create collegial forums for the professional development and advancement of their areas of expertise across the university. Some examples have been working toward collaboration on university curriculum development, diversifying offerings, and exploration of engaging students at the cutting edge of their area’s scholarship. They are comprised of departmental leadership, chairs, or a representative. Councils were formally included in the Board Bylaws in 1993, they are free-standing and contrast each other just as uniquely as the academic areas the Councils represent.

The Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL) have played a vital role at CUNY for more than a decade as first-line resources for collaborative faculty and professional development, innovation, strategic planning, and dynamic support for faculty seeking methods and modalities to meet CUNY students’ needs. During the transition to emergency remote instruction in the spring of 2020, CTLs were especially important, and that impact is now demonstrated through ongoing support for CUNY Online, the LMS transition, the Open Educational Resources initiative, the College Transformation Funds Initiative, and other strategic CUNY priorities.

Historically , CTLs have collaborated through the CTL Council, a group charged and convened by the CUNY Office of Undergraduate Studies in the Office of Academic Affairs. The CTL Council has planned retreats, shared best practices, and informed the work of the CUNY Innovative Teaching Academy. The Council also supports CTL staff members and affiliated colleagues at both CUNY Central and the campuses. That body will continue under the leadership of the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

This new body, the Teaching and Learning Discipline Council, will work to increase the visibility of educational development work at CUNY and strengthen CTL’s capacity as a resource for both faculty and administrators on matters of educational policy, teaching excellence, academic technology, and faculty and curricular development, and student success while continuing to advocate for meaningful engagement with the pedagogical implications of decisions made across the university.

Reach the Teaching and Learning Discipline Council by email with questions. To learn more, and to visit your campus Teaching and Learning Center , you might start at this link .
