'Legend' Review: Balayya Does Not Disappoint

Simha in the combination of Boyapati Srinu and Balakrishna in 2010 was a stupendous hit. The film ended the string of flops that Balayya was encountering prior to that. So when a film was announced in the same combination, there were lot of expectations. Will Balayya live up to the expectations? Will he deliver? Will Boyapati’s magic work once again remains to be seen.

Story: Jeetendra (Jagapati Babu) is insulted in a village. So, he develops hatred on the village and the village people and its head played by Suman. Suman’s son Krishna (Balakrishna) is sent off to study by his grandmother to stop him from taking revenge. Years later, Krishna returns with the girl he loves (Sonal). After his return, he ends up having a fight with Jeetendra’s son. From then on, a tug-of-war begins between Jeetendra and Krishna. Meanwhile, there is a surprise twist in the tale.

Artistes’ Performance: Balakrishna is a pro when it comes to showing intensity. Boyapati Srinu has created a character that is in keeping with Balayya’s image. The character makes full justice to his style of dialogue delivery and powerful expressions. In the second half, he puts in a performance that is bound to be liked by his fans. However, he fails to hide his age through the young character. But his dressing and characterisation perfectly suit the Legend character.

We cannot point a finger at Jagapari Babu’s get-up. He did not look so good even when he played the hero. His dressing and his acting get full marks. But due to some glitches in characterisation, his character falters at places.

Coming to the heroines, there is nothing much they get to do. Radhika Apte bores to the core. Even Balakrishna irritates by calling his sister-in-law ‘amma’.

It is probably one of those films where you will actually want Brahmanandam’s character to end soon.

Technical Excellence: Devi Sri Prasad’s music is so-so. You will not remember any songs once you walk out of the film. But the title song has been well-picturised. However, Devi does leave his mark while giving background score.

Coming to editing, there are some loopholes. Since it is a heavy subject line, the editor should have been slick. Cinematography is good though.

Boyapati Srinu repeats himself and this film is technically not very different from his earlier films. All his films show the hero in two shades and so is the case with Legend. Balayya’s character is a mix of heroism and comedy. Boyapati who had shown Balayya in a powerful role in Simha, successfully repeats the earlier characterisation.

Analysis: The biggest draw for Legend is his performance. There is nothing much to the story and the same can be said about screenplay. But Boyapati Srinu manages to make a character that is in keeping with Balayya’s image.

Balayya gives his 100 per cent to a character that suits his age and boosts the performance. Though there are many loopholes in the story and despite it being weak in places, Balayya manages to pull it through.

The film’s highlight is surely Jagapathi Babu. In fact, if the writer would have pitted Balayya and Jagapathi Babu, then Legend would have turned out differently. But in keeping with the taste of the Telugu audience, the hero’s character is rather strong and the villain’s character is rather weak. Due to this, the film does not excite you. The hero pulls it along on his own strength. Had the director picturised a powerful showdown between Jagapathi Babu and Balayya, it would have helped the film a lot.

Boyapati mixes up various characters of Balayya along with his two shades formula and whips up Legend. But Balayya’s trademark dialogue delivery and dialogues that interest his fans induce some excitement into the film. However, the film will not be well-received by others barring his fans and mass audience.

Since it released at a time when there are no big films, it remains to be seen how far Legend will cash in on the situation. But if one were to compare this with Balayya’s Narasimha Naidu and Samarasimha Reddy, then the fans are likely to be disappointed. And if one were to compare it with Balayya’s recent flops, then the film is ‘much better’.

Bottomline: Great Legend for his fans... Small celebrity for others!

Behind the Movie Legend: Just before the elections in state, a film from Balakrishna with political touch is enough to keep high expectations set. Moreover, when the proven combination of ‘Simha’ is back, Nandamuri Fans were quite on high morals. Let us see, how ferocious are these roars of Lion?

In the Movie Legend: Jithender (Jagapathi Babu), a cruel cum rowdy politician belonging to Kurnool area eyes on Vizag due to an ego clash with local leader (Suman). After brutally murdering this leader and his wife (Suhasini), Jithender faces a tough opposition. Who is it?

Fast forward by many years, Krishna (Balakrishna) staying in Dubai comes to Vizag to get married with Sneha (Sonal Chauhan) before his family members. On the very stepping into Vizag, he reacts violently on atrocities of Jithender’s three sons. Immediately, Jithender attacks the entire family of Krishna but a brutal shock comes in the form of Jaidev (Balakrishna) to rescue the family.          

Who is Jaidev? What is his flashback? What is his connection with Krishna? Why did he leave Jithender twice without killing? How did Jaidev spoil the political ambitions of Jithender? All these form rest of second half.

Values of the Movie Legend: When Lion begins to Roar, no one can stand before. This is why Balakrishna is called the Real King of Tollywood. No words to describe the outstanding, exceptional and gargantuan performance. Boyapati Srinu mastered the knack of satisfying Nandamuri Fans to core and he does it again without mistakes. Story is simple with rivalries and ego differences between two powerful people (Balakrishna and Jagapathi Babu). What mattered is the strong narration with high voltage scenes. Ratnam’s dialogues stand out inviting the shrieks from Fans especially in second half. Ram Prasad’s camera work is decent while Kotagiri’s editing was little confusing and erroneous. Stunt composition of Ram-Lakshman and Kanal Kannan stood on top of the credits. May be for the first time, DSP tasted the first power punch to his career composing to Balakrishna’s heroism. Of course, songs are mediocre and BGM was reverberating. Production values of Varahi and 14 Reels are stylishly beholden.

On performance front, there is not even an iota of negativity I can point out with Balakrishna. He is a power house performer. To be more straight, I can see teary eyes of Fans when ‘Legend’ arrives on screen just before interval. That is more than an achievement for any hero and any director. More than Krishna, it is Jaidev the show stealer. Styling done for Jaidev’s character is forever the best for Balayya after ‘Simha.’ While Sonal Chauhan filled the glamour part, Radhika Apte left an impression in a purposeful role. Coming to Jagapathi Babu, the voracious and blood thirsty broad eyes spoke the real villainy. He is the new antagonist on Telugu screen. Brahmi is a mere waste. Jayaprakash Reddy was not good and the voice dubbed for him was wrongly chosen. Nothing great to mention about others.

Out of the Movie Legend: On story front, ‘Legend’ has no great content. It’s the selection of lead artists and the highly scaled directorial abilities lifted the film to top. Even screenplay wise, more or less Boyapati showed the traits of ‘Simha.’ So what, when audiences are satisfied, rest goes to a corner. 

If Jagapathi Babu took the responsibility of giving an explosive take off for the film, Balakrishna shouldered the entire second half. Of course, the character of Krishna and the total romantic, family thread looked weak and flaccid in first half. The real show begins with pre interval block when ‘Legend’ saves the family. Rest of the movie is completely taken upon oneself and that is the original Balayya. May it be the conversation with Delhi MP or the serious lecture on aborting the female fetus or the train action episode… everywhere Balakrishna showed the mark and you cannot stop Nandamuri Fans. Here and there, we can see loopholes in screenplay with sidelining of Krishna role in second half and the forcibly added climax thread with political motives or the excessive and lengthy sentiment yet presence of Balayya, even wrong becomes right.

Overall, the film is made to serve the interests of Nandamuri Fans and Boyapati Srinu delivered a perfect film as the right political footing to Balakrishna. When BP rises for Nata Simham, AP has to shiver! Theatres are to echo with only two slogans… ‘Jai Balayya Jai Jai Balayya’ and ‘Balayya… CM.’

గత కొన్ని రోజులు నుంచి సినిమా దగ్గర గట్టి ప్రమోషన్స్ తో కాస్త హడావుడిగా వినిపిస్తూ వచ్చిన చిత్రం “ది లెజెండ్”. ప్రముఖ బిజినెస్ మెన్ లెజెండ్ శరవణన్ హీరోగా చేసిన మొదటి సినిమా అందులో భారీ బడ్జెట్ తో తెరకెక్కించారు. మరి ఇంతలా హైప్ చేస్తూ వచ్చిన ఈ చిత్రం థియేటర్స్ లో ఈరోజు రిలీజ్ అయ్యింది. ఇక ఈ సినిమా ఆ అంచనాలు అందుకుందా లేదా అనేది సమీక్షలో తెలుసుకుందాం రండి.

ఇక ఈ సినిమా కథలోకి వచ్చినట్టు అయితే..డాక్టర్ శరవణన్(లెజెండ్ శరవణన్) వ్యవసాయ రంగంలో ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా ఎంతో పేరున్న ఒక అద్భుత సైంటిస్ట్. అయితే తన ప్రజలకు ఏదైనా చెయ్యాలి అని తన పుట్టిన ఊరికి వచ్చేస్తాడు. అక్కడ తన లానే ప్రతిభ ఉన్నవాళ్ళని తయారు చెయ్యాలని అనుకుంటాడు. అయితే ఈ క్రమంలో తన ఫ్రెండ్ ఒక అరుదైన వ్యాధితో చనిపోతాడు. ఇక దీనితో ఆ వ్యాధికి మందు కనుక్కోవాలని శరవణన్ ప్రయత్నిస్తాడు. అయితే ఈ ప్రయత్నంతో తన బిజినెస్ కి భారీ నష్టం వస్తుందని వీజే (సుమన్) ఎలాగైనా అడ్డుకోవాలని చూస్తాడు. మరి ఈ అడ్డంకులని శరవణన్ ఎలా ఎదుర్కొంటాడు? ఇంతకీ తాను కనిపెట్టాలి అనుకున్న మందు ఏంటి? చివరికి కనిపెడతాడా లేదా అనేది తెలియాలి అంటే ఈ సినిమాని చూడాల్సిందే.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో మొదటగా చెప్పుకోవాల్సింది ఈ సినిమా గ్రాండియర్ కోసం అని చెప్పాలి. టీజర్, ట్రైలర్స్ మరియు సాంగ్స్ లో చూపించిన విధంగా చాలా గ్రాండ్ విజువల్స్ ఈ సినిమాలో కనిపిస్తాయి. మేకర్స్ అయితే ఎక్కడా కాంప్రమైజ్ కాకుండా చాలా మంచి అవుట్ పుట్ ని తెచ్చారు. సినిమా చూసినంతసేపు మాత్రం గ్రాండ్ ట్రీట్ కనిపిస్తుంది.

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే హీరోగా శరవణన్ పర్వాలేదనిపిస్తారు. తనపై యాక్షన్ బ్లాక్ లు బాగున్నాయి. ఇక హీరోయిన్ లు ఊర్వశి రౌటేలా మరియు గీతికలు తమ నటనతో పాటు తమ గ్లామర్ షో తో ఆకట్టుకుంటారు. అలాగే నటుడు సుమన్ కూడా విలన్ పాత్రలో ఆకట్టుకుంటాడు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో మాత్రం డ్రా బ్యాక్ లు చాలా ఎక్కువే కనిపిస్తాయని చెప్పాలి. మొదటగా హీరో శరవణన్ విషయానికి వస్తే తాను సినిమా హీరోగా కనిపించాలని అనుకోవచ్చు కానీ అందుకు తగ్గట్టుగా ఇంకా ఓపెన్ గా ప్రిపేర్ అయితే తన సైడ్ నుంచి బాగా ప్లస్ అయ్యి ఉండేది.

నటన పరంగా చాలా వరకు హావభావాలు తాను ఫుల్ ఫ్లెడ్జ్ గా ఇచ్చినట్టు అనిపించదు. ఇంకా తనతో పాటుగా చాలా మంది భారీ తారాగణమే ఉంది కానీ సినిమాకి వారు ఏమాత్రం ఉపయోగపడలేకపోయారని చెప్పాలి. ఇంకా సినిమాలో అసలు సరైన కథా కథనాలే కనిపించవు.

కేవలం గ్రాండ్ విజువల్స్ యాక్షన్ పై మాత్రమే దృష్టి పెట్టిన మేకర్స్ ఎంగేజింగ్ గా సినిమాని నడపడంలో విఫలం అయ్యారు. అలాగే చాలా వరకు సన్నివేశాల్లో కథనం చాలా రొటీన్ గా చిరాకు తెప్పించేలా ఉంటుంది. అలాగే ఒక కొత్త హీరోపై ఓవర్ గా బిల్డప్ ఇవ్వడం వంటివి జెనరల్ ఆడియెన్స్ కి బాగా అతి చేసినట్టు అనిపిస్తాయి.

పోనీ సినిమా కథ రొటీన్ గానే ఉన్నా కథనం ఏమన్నా కొత్తగా ఉంటుందా అంటే అది కూడా కనిపించదు. దీనితో అయితే థెటర్స్ లో ఆడియెన్స్ ఓపికకి పరీక్ష తప్పదు. చాలా వరకు అనవసర సీన్స్ ఓవర్ బిల్డప్ సీన్స్ తగ్గించాల్సింది.

సాంకేతిక వర్గం :

మొదట్లో చెప్పుకున్నట్టుగా సినిమా నిర్మాణ విలువలు మాత్రం నెక్స్ట్ లెవెల్లో కనిపిస్తాయి. నిర్మాణం పరంగా అయితే భారీ ఖర్చు అంతా విజువల్స్ పరంగా ఓ రేంజ్ లో కనిపిస్తుంది. ఇంకా టెక్నీకల్ టీం విషయానికి వస్తే.. వారిలో సంగీత దర్శకుడు హరీష్ జై రాజ్ సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ వేల్ రాజ్ ల వర్క్ సాలిడ్ గా ఉంటాయి. అద్భుతమైన విజువల్స్ మరియు మంచి బ్యాక్గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ పాటలు ఎక్కడైనా సినిమా బాగుంది అనిపినేది ఉందా అంటే అది వారి వల్లే అని చెప్పొచ్చు. ఇక ఎడిటర్ రూబెన్ చెయ్యడానికి కూడా ఏమి లేదు.. కొన్ని సీన్స్ తగ్గించినా కూడా సినిమా ఫలితాన్ని మార్చడానికి ఏమీ చెయ్యలేడు.

ఇక దర్శకులు జేడీ చెర్రీ విషయానికి వస్తే ఓవరాల్ డిజప్పాయింటింగ్ వర్క్ అందించారని చెప్పాలి. కేవలం పైన హంగులు తప్ప సినిమాలో చెప్పుకోదగ్గ అసలు విషయం లేదు. దీనితో సినిమా కి పెట్టిన బడ్జెట్ మిగతా టీం ఎఫర్ట్స్ అన్నీ కూడా ఉపయోగం లేనట్టు అయిపోతాయి. కాకపోతే ఒక్క విజువల్స్, యాక్షన్ సీక్వెన్స్ లు వరకు పర్వాలేదనిపిస్తాయి. కానీ మొత్తంగా అయితే డైరెక్షన్ టీం వర్క్ మెప్పించదు.

ఇక మొత్తంగా చూసినట్టు అయితే ఈ “ది లెజెండ్” తో తన మొదటి సినిమాగా వచ్చిన శరవణన్ తాను హీరోగా గ్రాండ్ లెవెల్లో పరిచయం అవ్వాలన్న ఆశ నెరవేరి ఉండొచ్చు తప్ప సినిమా మాత్రం ఆడియెన్స్ ని ఏమాత్రం ఆకట్టుకోదు. ఒక్క గ్రాండ్ విజువల్స్, సంగీతం మినహా సినిమాలో అసలు చెప్పుకునే హైలైట్ అంశం ఒకటికి కూడా పెద్దగా కనిపించదు. సో ఈ వారాంతానికి అయితే ఈ సినిమాని పక్కన పెట్టేస్తే మీ సమయం, డబ్బులు రెండు ఆదా అవుతాయి. నెక్స్ట్ టైం అయినా శరవణన్ బెటర్ కథ బెటర్ నటనతో వస్తే బాగుంటుంది.

Boyapati Srinu is the director of the 2014 Telugu-language action drama Legend, which is produced by Varahi Chalana Chitram and 14 Reels Entertainment. In the movie, Nandamuri Balakrishna plays a dual role with Radhika Apte, Sonal Chauhan, and Jagapathi Babu. Devi Sri Prasad wrote the background score and soundtrack.

Legend debuted on March 28, 2014, all over the world. It was well-received by reviewers and went on to become the fourth-highest grossing movie at the box office in 2014.

A harsh faction leader from Kurnool named Jeetendra travels to Vizag in order to finalise his marriage arrangement with the daughter of the local MLA. When confronted, Jeetendra pulls a gun on the onlookers and causes an accident on his way back. They are then taken before a family and an arbiter who attempts to resolve the conflict by requesting that Jeetendra offer an apology to the parties he has wronged. Rather, Jeetendra gets slapped and taken into custody when he objects and makes a commotion. He gets really irritated by this. The arbitrator’s wife and son are abducted by Jeetendra’s father in an attempt to free him.

Jeetendra discovers his father dead not long after being freed. He finds out via his goons that this was the young son of the arbitrator taking revenge for the boy’s mother’s death. The mother of the arbitrator is deeply affected by this tragedy and asks for an end to the violence. The arbitrator replies, however, that this will not end and that his son—the legend—is the answer to this issue. In parallel, Jeetendra settles in Vizag to seize control of the region and his animosity becomes irreversible. Additionally, he murders the arbitrator, which leads the arbitrator’s grandmother to move her grandson to a distant place.

The arbitrator’s youngest son, Krishna, resides in Dubai, where he destroys lawbreakers and will not stand for injustice. In defiance of his grandmother’s wishes, he travels to India with his fiancée Sneha. While travelling, he witnesses Jeetendra’s older son Chotu killing Simhachalam, a former MLA, in order to resolve an ongoing legal matter and influence his father to become Chief Minister. Sneha’s father, a local DC, witnesses Krishna beating him severely. Later on, at his meeting with Krishna, DC warns him about Jeetendra’s harshness. Chotu, who is admitted to the hospital, passes away inexplicably the next day. In this situation, Jeetendra becomes enraged and begins a fierce pursuit for retribution.

A Balakrishna movie is an acquired taste. You need to have grown up on a diet of Telugu cinema to appreciate its nuances. Like why there are at least two heroines (in this movie he is playing a bit of a dual role), one inuendo laden number that goes lasku tapa, lasku tapa…, the high decibel dialogues, the flying suvs, and “David Blaineesque” stunts. Yet the audiences go berserk with chants of Balayya Balayya at the most juvenile of his antics. Simply put its Simha remade with bad music. How much you will enjoy it will be directly proportional to your love for Balayya.

First half of the film is okay. Interval bang is good. Second half has powerful moments and emotionally charged scenes. Plus points of the film are Bala Krishnas ferocious performance (as Jai Dev) and powerful dialogues written by M Ratnam. On the flip side, there is a lot of bloodshed. On a whole, Legend is a feast for fans and will be liked by masses.

The biggest draw for Legend is his performance. There is nothing much to the story and the same can be said about screenplay. But Boyapati Srinu manages to make a character that is in keeping with Balayyas image. Since it released at a time when there are no big films, it remains to be seen how far Legend will cash in on the situation. But if one were to compare this with Balayyas Narasimha Naidu and Samarasimha Reddy, then the fans are likely to be disappointed. And if one were to compare it with Balayyas recent flops, then the film is much better

Boyapati pens a film that has something for everyone, except those youngsters who can’t connect with a generation of heroes that revel in everything larger-than-life and over-the-top. There is second-rate Brahmi comedy, there are a couple of elements that mirror the debauchery pervasive in politics today, there is that chest-beating for people. A film that falters in first half and picks up from the interval bang. All in all, it is Balayya’s one-man mighty show. Barring a few lacunae, it should be a hit with the mass audience.

The talking point of the film is the effortless performance by Nandamuri, which is a combination of romantic action and a mass entertainer. The storyline has been used a lot earlier but the director has managed to keep the audience hooked till the end. The film is fast-paced with introduction scenes of the character played by Balakrishna making his entry in a chase sequence in Dubai. The first half of the film is full of punch dialogues.

Boyapati Srinu packed it with right mix of commercial ingredients and showcasing Bala Krishna in a powerful role. Second half is the major asset of the movie and the sharp dialogues in the second hour are an additional asset. While the first half is okay with few interesting moments, the interval bang in too good leaving scope to second half. Legend- Bala Krishnas Legendary performance delights fans!!!

Legend is a complete commercial package with all the ingredients neatly packed in. The film starts off with a bang with Jagapathi Babu setting right expectations on the film. The graph dips a bit after Balakrishna’s character was introduced. Director tried to add comedy flavor to the film by giving maximum footage to Brahmanandam for a while. There is good sentimental touch to the film which will appeal to classes and families. Excessive violence is the weak point of this film and it may restrict the reach.

The second half of the film is a big plus point, with emotionally charged scenes and powerful action episodes. The fight sequence near train track is excellent.Interval episode and twist have good impact value.Legend has some explosive moments in the second half and powerful punch dialogues from Balakrishna. The film is a solid commercial entertainer that can do great business at the Box Office

First half of the film is okay, with solid interval bang but things fall apart in the second half due to thin point and dragged narration. A better script, more believable characters, some real trimming, pulsing narration and a modern style could have done wonders for Legend. But in the current form it succeeds in reminding about the earlier movies. Overall, the intentions were honest, the effort that has gone into the making of the film very evident in every frame. It certainly has its moments, but not enough to deserve the price of your ticket unless of course, you’re a Balakrishna fan. If you are, don’t think twice, go watch it.
