Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the sudden loss of kidney function. Learn more about the symptoms to watch for and ways to lower your risk.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a term used to describe when your kidneys are suddenly not able to filter waste products from the blood. This can happen within a few hours or a few days. For most people, AKI develops within 48 hours, but sometimes it can take as long as 7 days.

This replaces an older term “acute renal failure” (or ARF) which you may still see or hear occasionally.

The signs and symptoms of AKI can differ depending on many factors like the cause, severity, and your other health conditions. If symptoms do happen, they may include one or more of the following:

• Making less urine (pee) than usual or no urine
• Swelling in legs, ankles, and/or feet
• Fatigue or tiredness
• Shortness of breath (trouble breathing)
• Confusion or mood changes
• High blood pressure
• Decreased appetite (low desire to eat)
• Flank pain (pain on the side of your back - between your ribs and hips)
• Chest pain or pressure
• Seizures or coma (in severe cases)

In some cases, AKI causes no symptoms and is only found through other tests done by your healthcare professional.

AKI can have many different causes. Many people get AKI when a related disease or condition puts extra stress on your kidneys. Another common cause for AKI is when your body is reacting to an urgent or emergent health concern (such as heart surgery or COVID-19 infection). Lastly, AKI can be caused by medications or other substances that you may consume. Examples for each of these scenarios are provided below.

Usually, AKI happens because of a combination of factors. This is especially true for older adults who are at higher risk given their age.

Related disease or condition

• Autoimmune kidney disease, such as glomerulonephritis , lupus , or IgA nephropathy
• Cancer (especially bladder, cervical, ovarian, or prostate cancer)
• Chronic kidney disease
• Diabetes flare-up (also known as diabetes-related ketoacidosis or DKA)
• Heart disease (e.g. heart attack, heart failure, or other condition leading to decreased heart function)
• Kidney infection
• Kidney stones
• Liver disease or cirrhosis
• Multiple myeloma (a specific type of blood cancer)
• Vasculitis (long-term inflammation and scarring in your blood vessels)

Urgent or emergent health concerns

• Acute tubular necrosis (ATN), a situation causing very low blood flow to the kidneys
• Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction)
• Blood clot or cholesterol blocking a blood vessel in your kidney(s)
• Hypotension (very low blood pressure) or shock
• Hemorrhage (severe loss of blood)
• Major surgery
• Pregnancy complications
• Severe dehydration (not getting enough water or fluids for your body’s needs)
• Severe diarrhea and/or vomiting
• Severe skin burns

Medications and other substances

Items in this list may not cause AKI by themselves, but when combined with other factors from the other 2 categories above, your risk of AKI goes up significantly.

• Certain antibiotics, especially ones given for severe infections
• Certain blood pressure medicines, like ACE inhibitors/ARBs or diuretics (water pills)
• ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
• indomethacin (Indocin)
• naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn)
• diclofenac tablets or capsules (Cataflam, Zipsor)
• celecoxib (Celebrex)
• meloxicam (Mobic)
• aspirin (only if more than 325 mg per day)
• Iodine-based contrast dye (used for CT scans and other forms of medical imaging)
• Recreational drugs, such as heroin or cocaine
• Some medicines used for cancer or HIV
• Toxic alcohols, such as methanol, ethylene glycol (antifreeze), or isopropyl/isopropanol (rubbing alcohol)

AKI can cause a build-up of waste products in your blood and make it hard to keep the right balance of fluid and minerals in your body. It can also cause permanent damage to your kidneys, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) . Without treatment, AKI can also affect other organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. So, it is important to know what to watch for and how to lower your risk.

If your healthcare professional suspects AKI, they will perform an assessment to identify its potential cause (or causes). This may include performing a physical exam, reviewing your medical conditions and medication use history in the past week (including over-the-counter products and herbal supplements), asking about recent events and experiences (e.g. symptoms, water intake, recreational drug use, relevant travel), and ordering blood and/or urine tests.

Some of the most common tests used to check for AKI, include:

• Serum (blood) creatinine – a blood test used to check how well your kidneys are filtering this waste product from your blood
• Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) – this is calculated based on your serum (blood) creatinine level, age, and sex to estimate your kidney function
• Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) – similar to creatinine, this test can be used to measure another waste product in your blood to see how well your kidneys are filtering the blood
• Other blood tests , such as sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate (to see if anything is out of balance)
• Urine output – your healthcare professional may track how much urine (pee) you pass each day, especially if you are having AKI in the hospital
• Urine test (urinalysis) – a general urine test may be used to find more clues about the cause of AKI
• Imaging tests , like an ultrasound, may be helpful in some cases
• Kidney biopsy – in some less common situations, your healthcare professional may need to look at a tiny piece of your kidney under a microscope to get a better idea about the cause

Other tests may be ordered based on what your healthcare professional thinks might be causing your AKI.

Treatment for AKI depends on what caused it in the first place. This is why finding the cause is so important. Some most common approaches to treating AKI include:

• Stopping any medicines that may be causing or contributing to your AKI
• Giving you fluids (either by mouth or through your veins)
• Antibiotics (if AKI is caused by a bacterial infection)
• Placing a urine catheter (a thin tube used to drain your bladder, useful if AKI is caused by a blockage)
• In most cases, dialysis treatments are only temporary until the kidneys can recover.

Most people with AKI will need to spend some time in the hospital to be monitored while receiving treatment.

After having AKI, you have a higher risk for other health problems, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart disease, or stroke). You are also at a higher risk of getting AKI again in the future. So, it is important to have regular follow-up visits with your healthcare professional and check your kidney health, starting with two simple tests (ideally within 3 months of finishing treatment for your AKI).

What is Eid al-Fitr? 6 questions about the holiday and how Muslims celebrate it, answered

Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam's principal festivals, will be celebrated April 9, 2024, according to the Fiqh Council of North America . At the middle of June, Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Adha. Ken Chitwood, a scholar of global Islam, explains the two Islamic festivals.

1. What is Eid?

Eid literally means a "festival" or "feast" in Arabic. There are two major eids in the Islamic calendar per year – Eid al-Fitr earlier in the year and Eid al-Adha later.

Eid al-Fitr is a three-day-long festival and is known as the "Lesser" or "Smaller Eid" when compared to Eid al-Adha, which is four days long and is known as the "Greater Eid."

2. Why is Eid celebrated twice a year?

The two Eids recognize, celebrate and recall two distinct events that are significant to the story of Islam.

Eid al-Fitr means "the feast of breaking the fast." The fast, in this instance, is Ramadan , which recalls the revealing of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad and requires Muslims to fast from sunrise to sundown for a month.

3. How do Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr features two to three days of celebrations that include special morning prayers. People greet each other with "Eid Mubarak," meaning "Blessed Eid" and with formal embraces. Sweet dishes are prepared at home and gifts are given to children and to those in need. In addition, Muslims are encouraged to forgive and seek forgiveness. Practices vary from country to country.

In many countries with large Muslim populations, Eid al-Fitr is a national holiday. Schools, offices and businesses are closed so family, friends and neighbors can enjoy the celebrations together. In the U.S. and the U.K., Muslims may request to have the day off from school or work to travel or celebrate with family and friends.

In countries like Egypt and Pakistan, Muslims decorate their homes with lanterns, twinkling lights or flowers. Special food is prepared and friends and family are invited over to celebrate.

In places like Jordan, with its Muslim majority population, the days before Eid al-Fitr can see a rush at local malls and special "Ramadan markets" as people prepare to exchange gifts on Eid al-Fitr.

In Turkey and in places that were once part of the Ottoman-Turkish empire such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, it is also known as the, "Lesser Bayram" or "festival" in Turkish.

4. How do Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha?

The other festival, Eid al-Adha, is the "feast of the sacrifice." It comes at the end of the Hajj , an annual pilgrimage by millions of Muslims to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia that is obligatory once in a lifetime, but only for those with means.

Eid al-Adha recalls the story of how God commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as a test of faith. The story, as narrated in the Quran, describes Satan's attempt to tempt Ibrahim so he would disobey God's command. Ibrahim, however, remains unmoved and informs Ismail, who is willing to be sacrificed.

But, just as Ibrahim attempts to kill his son, God intervenes and a ram is sacrificed in place of Ismail. During Eid al-Adha, Muslims slaughter an animal to remember Ibrahim's sacrifice and remind themselves of the need to submit to the will of God.

5. When are they celebrated?

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the 10th month in the Islamic calendar.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the final month in the Islamic calendar.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and dates are calculated based on lunar phases. Since the Islamic calendar year is shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar year by 10 to 12 days, the dates for Ramadan and Eid on the Gregorian calendar can vary year by year.

6. What is the spiritual meaning of Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr, as it follows the fasting of Ramadan, is also seen as a spiritual celebration of Allah's provision of strength and endurance.

Amid the reflection and rejoicing, Eid al-Fitr is a time for charity, known as Zakat al-Fitr. Eid is meant to be a time of joy and blessing for the entire Muslim community and a time for distributing one's wealth.

Charity to the poor is a highly emphasized value in Islam. The Quran says ,

"Believe in Allah and his messenger, and give charity out of the (substance) that Allah has made you heirs of. For those of you who believe and give charity – for them is a great reward."

Blockbuster job growth continues to power the U.S. economy, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting 303,000 payrolls added in March .

Usually, such strong growth might signal that inflation could pick up. If employers see more demand for goods and services, they need to hire more workers — and if there aren’t enough workers, they have to increase pay, which increases the overall cost of running the business.

But while annual price growth, at more than 3%, remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, it is still well below the 9% peak seen in the summer of 2022.

Economists increasingly believe that the post-pandemic surge in immigration is a key reason the economy has been able to grow steadily without pushing inflation higher, as the new arrivals have helped employers fill roles at levels of pay that have kept a lid on overall price growth.

In a note to clients published Friday, titled “Why we have both strong growth and lower inflation,” Goldman Sachs chief U.S. economist David Mericle said rising immigration had boosted labor force growth. As a result, the strong demand that consumers continue to exhibit elsewhere is unlikely to raise prices by much, “if at all,” he said.

In fact, so far, measures of labor market “tightness,” like wages, “have continued to fall or move sideways, not rise,” Mericle said.

“Won’t stronger growth prevent inflation from falling or even reignite it?” he wrote. “We don’t think so.”

The Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan federal agency, was the first to cite the immigration surge that began in 2022 as the primary factor helping to expand the overall size of the U.S. labor force.

This year, the agency increased its projection of how large the U.S. labor force could be in 2033 by 5.2 million people. Most of that increase is expected to be a result of higher projected net immigration.

The Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan think tank, came to a similar conclusion earlier this month, saying the economy can now tolerate a more brisk pace of job growth without adding to cost concerns.“Faster population and labor force growth has meant that employment could grow more quickly than previously believed without adding to inflationary pressures,” Brookings said.

Wendy Edelberg, a former Federal Reserve economist now serving as director of Brookings’ Hamilton Project, told NBC News the net effect of immigration on inflation is not entirely obvious — but is likely marginal. Indeed, Fed Chair Jay Powell has expressed similar observations, saying the effect of the new wave of arrivals is “broadly neutral.”

What is clear, Edelberg said, is that the immigration surge will allow the economy to tolerate higher levels of job growth without overheating.

“Without immigration, if I’d seen an increase of 300,000, I would have been utterly baffled that wages were not higher,” she said, citing the March jobs report released on Friday.

Wage data shows the annual pace of average hourly pay growth has declined to 4.1% in March after hitting a post-pandemic peak of 5.9% in March 2022.

If the supply and demand for labor were truly out of sync, the pace of wage growth would be much higher, likely translating into higher overall inflation.

Instead, thanks to the immigration surge, businesses in the aggregate can tap into the newly growing labor pool to meet continued demand for their goods and services, without having to raise wages significantly to compete for workers.

For many parts of the economy, from federal Social Security payments all the way down to local businesses that may be looking for workers or new customers, immigration is usually a net good, Edelberg said.

At the same time, it tends to put a strain on state and local budgets , she said.

Immigration now ranks as the most volatile domestic issue facing President Joe Biden, with Gallup survey respondents ranking it as the country’s “most important problem,” the first time it has held that position since 2019. Republicans have called on Biden to take extreme measures to stem the entry of migrants, while former President Donald Trump has referred to them as “not humans” and “animals.”

Big cities like New York and Chicago, meanwhile, have faced crises stemming in part from political stunts by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott that have involved sending migrants to those cities at a pace they’re not equipped to handle.

But while the focus of the debate has been on undocumented immigration, the majority of immigrants arriving are actually authorized to work in the U.S., Edelberg said.

Plus, they’re more likely to spend a greater share of their labor income.

“So they’re increasing the demand for goods and services, and helping to supply labor,” she said. “So the net effect on inflation is actually small.”

Drake Keeps Trolling, This Time Sharing Pic of Manager Linked to Kendrick and Future: 'Is Today the Day?'

Is today the day?

That’s the question being posed by Drake , whose latest act of Instagrammery at the time of this writing saw him bringing a photo of Anthony Saleh into his 6 God vs. Everybody saga.

"Wonder is today the day," the " Summer Games " sequel denier wrote when sharing the photo, which he also captioned with a pair of turtle emoji.

But who, exactly, is Anthony Saleh? Back in 2018, Billboard included the Emagen Entertainment Group CEO and WNDRCO partner in its Power 100 ranking , notably crediting him with having "helped marquee client Future make history as the first artist to score back-to-back No. 1 album debuts in the span of two weeks" with the prior year's Future and Hndrxx albums .

In an accompanying interview at the time, Saleh also praised Kendrick Lamar as “a prime example" of an artist whose presence in pop culture at large was "designed for the most impact."

As of 2020, the same year Future and Drake released "Life Is Good," the Emagen socials were still actively promoting Future’s work. The artist management firm’s Instagram and Twitter pages both still list Future among its roster of clients, though it’s worth noting that neither page appears to have been utilized in quite some time. The official Emagen site, meanwhile, does not currently mention Future as a client. The website-listed roster includes Nas, Alina Baraz, Col3trane, and Devault.

More recently, Saleh made headlines in 2021 after denying a rumor of a Verzuz battle between Future and Travis Scott . As for Kendrick, it was reported later that same year that the " Like That " artist had brought Saleh into the fold ahead of the release of what would become Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers , which is expected to be his final album for Top Dawg Entertainment .

So, what does this all mean? Is today indeed the day? Stay tuned.

The 2024 total solar eclipse captivates America: See stunning photos of the rare event

The 2024 total solar eclipse passed over Earth Monday and the country was enthralled.

The eclipse covered hundreds of cities and towns in a  115-mile wide path of totality  across 13 U.S. states, temporarily leaving communities in darkness. Some places will saw totality  for about four minutes.

The next time a total eclipse will be visible in the U.S. will be 2044, leaving skywatchers scrambling to save the memory as best they can.

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears as the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk from Earth, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere known as the corona,  confuses animals  – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

A recent study even found that  clouds activity is altered by eclipses  as shallow cumulus clouds were observed vanishing when the moon obscured the sun.

Morgan Stanley’s stock (NYSE: MS) has lost approximately 7% YTD, as compared to the 9% rise in the S&P500 over the same period. Further, the stock price decreased 5.2% yesterday vs a 0.74% increase in the broader index. Notably, the drop came after the news of a regulatory probe against the bank’s wealth management unit was reported by the Wall Street Journal. Overall, the stock is currently trading at $87 per share, which is 9% below its fair value of $95 – Trefis’ estimate for Morgan Stanley’s valuation .

Amid the current financial backdrop, MS stock has shown strong gains of 20% from levels of $70 in early January 2021 to around $85 now, vs. an increase of about 40% for the S&P 500 over this roughly 3-year period. However, the increase in MS stock has been far from consistent. Returns for the stock were 43% in 2021, -13% in 2022, and 10% in 2023. In comparison, returns for the S&P 500 have been 27% in 2021, -19% in 2022, and 24% in 2023 - indicating that MS underperformed the S&P in 2023. In fact, consistently beating the S&P 500 - in good times and bad - has been difficult over recent years for individual stocks; for heavyweights in the Financials sector including JPM, V, and MA, and even for the megacap stars GOOG, TSLA, and MSFT. In contrast, the Trefis High Quality Portfolio , with a collection of 30 stocks, has outperformed the S&P 500 each year over the same period. Why is that? As a group, HQ Portfolio stocks provided better returns with less risk versus the benchmark index; less of a roller-coaster ride as evident in HQ Portfolio performance metrics . Given the current uncertain macroeconomic environment with high oil prices and elevated interest rates, could MS face a similar situation as it did in 2023 and underperform the S&P over the next 12 months - or will it see a strong jump?

The bank reported better-than-expected revenue figures in the fourth quarter of 2023. It posted total revenues of $12.9 billion – up 1% y-o-y, mainly driven by a 5% gain in investment banking and a marginal increase in the sales & trading segments. Further, wealth management and investment management revenues were at par with the previous year’s figure. On the cost front, total noninterest expenses as a % of revenues witnessed an unfavorable increase in the quarter. Overall, it led to a 35% drop in the adjusted net income to $1.4 billion.

The company’s top line grew 1% y-o-y to $54.14 billion in FY 2023. The wealth management revenues improved by 8% y-o-y, but the impact was almost offset by lower investment banking and sales & trading income. On the expense side, provisions for credit losses increased from $280 million to $532 million in the year. Further, total noninterest expenses rose by 6% y-o-y. Altogether, the adjusted net income was down 19% y-o-y to $8.53 billion.

Moving forward, we expect the same trend to continue in Q1. Overall, Morgan Stanley’s revenues are estimated to remain around $56.8 billion in FY2024. Additionally, MS’s adjusted net income margin is likely to see some improvement in the year, leading to an adjusted net income of $9.82 billion and an annual GAAP EPS of $6.26. This coupled with a P/E multiple of just above 15x will lead to a valuation of $95.
