Choice Board Scoring Resources {Freebies}

Over the past year, I have received several questions about how I score the choice boards I use in my classroom. I decided to go ahead and compile my favorite choice board scoring resources and offer them for free. You can use these with choice boards that I create or with any choice boards you have. I have included a variety of different printables that you can choose from.

Do you use choice boards to differentiate and engage your students? If so, grab these FREE choice board scoring resources to help you and your students assess the work.

When the students have completed the work, I like for them to self assess themselves before turning it into me. I have included two different self assessment printables for your students to use: a rubric and a questionnaire. Use one or the other or use both.

The rubric requires the students to “score” themselves on specific categories. They highlight, color, or circle the descriptor that matches their work.

Do you use choice boards to differentiate and engage your students? If so, grab these FREE choice board scoring resources to help you and your students assess the work.

Hello Jennifer, I was wondering how long you give your students to complete the board and when you give them new ones. I read your original blog post, but didn’t see anything about due dates. This looks like a great resource and I’m so excited to use!! Thanks!!

I think your choice boards are great but I’m in Texas and we don’t use Common Core. Do you know of anyone in Texas who has something similar for the TEKS? Thanks. Jana

Choice Board Template (Free Printable Bundle)

Ramp up student voice and choice in your classroom.

' src=

A choice board is a way to provide options for students. Primarily, choice boards are a way to differentiate assignments and allow students to choose from different options when they present their work. The teacher chooses the options available, and the student chooses which to complete. They can be used to give students choices when they finish early, need a brain break, or select a reward. We’ve created fully editable choice board templates for:

  • Early finishers
  • Brain breaks
  • Classroom management

Just fill out the form on this page to grab all of the printable Choice Board Templates below for free.

Project Choice Board

Project Choice Board

Use your knowledge of your students to create a project choice board. If your students love making podcasts, include multiple podcast options. That’s not to say that you can’t include things students don’t prefer—you can make some skills mandatory. Each option may have a writing component so students practice writing skills no matter which option they choose.

  • Think about what you want students to know and be able to do after the assignment. What do you want them to demonstrate, and how will you know they can do it?
  • Think about the resources you have available. Maybe you have access to podcast software but not video software, so a podcast or in-person presentation are both options, but a video isn’t.
  • Make a list of the ways students can achieve the objective.
  • Consider how long students have to complete the project, and make sure each option allows them enough time to go deep into the topic while still completing the assignment in the time allotted.

Fill in the choice board with options that students can use for that project. For example:

  • Write a news report.
  • Draw a diagram.
  • Make a mini documentary.
  • Create and conduct a survey and show the results.
  • Create an invention.

Early Finisher Choice Board

Early Finisher Choice Board

This choice board provides options for early finishers. Students who finish their class work early can choose a way to extend their learning or practice core skills with activities like:

  • Complete a STEM bin .
  • Practice math facts.
  • Complete a secret-code worksheet.
  • Read independently.
  • Write in your reading journal.
  • Write a book review for your classroom library.

Brain Break Choice Board

Brain Break Choice Board

When it’s time for a brain break, have students choose from options including:

  • Dance to an online video.
  • Play Minute To Win It games .
  • Breathe like an animal.

Classroom Management Choice Board

Classroom Management Choice Board

As you work with students to teach and manage behavior, letting students choose rewards can motivate them and make it easier to provide incentives. Fill a choice board with rewards that motivate your students like:

  • Hearing their name on the morning announcements
  • A positive phone call home
  • Choice of seat for one class period
  • Choice of music to listen to during independent work
  • One treasure from the “treasure box”

Vocabulary Choice Board

Vocabulary Choice Board

Allow students to choose how they are going to present and practice vocabulary with a choice board that includes:  ADVERTISEMENT

  • Write synonyms for the word.
  • Draw a picture to show the word.
  • Explain the word.
  • Write a sentence with the word.
  • Take a photo or video clip showing the word.

Students can complete as many squares as you assign, but they don’t have to complete all of them. For example, if you assign four squares on this choice board, a student may write synonyms, draw, write, and talk about the word.

A Collection of Choice Board Examples and Templates

homework choice board template

Dr. Robert J. Marzano states that self-agency is an essential outcome for students. The two elements making up student self-agency are voice and choice. He defines agency as students having “the belief that they can positively affect their lives and possess the skills to do so.” While voice and choice are two different elements, they are often connected. Marzano describes choice boards as one way to build self-agency by offering choice in social, environmental, and learning domains.

Four Ways to Offer Choice

In his book, “ The Highly Engaged Classroom, ” Dr. Robert J. Marzano outlines four ways we can offer choice to students: (1) choice of tasks, (2) choice of reporting formats, (3) choice of learning goals, and (4) choice of behaviors (pp. 14, 101). Choice boards can be used for each of these! In his blog, he says,

“Choices of task, reporting format, or learning goal allow students to take control of their learning and make decisions that ensure personal interest in their assignments.” Source

The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Choice Boards

Posted February 25, 2018 by Nick LaFave under General

Student choice is not only a simple way to increase student engagement, it’s also an essential factor in developing digital literacy while building 21st century life and career skills. Choice boards typically start with a specific learning goal, then provide students with a variety of ways to practice a skill, learn a concept, or demonstrate understanding.

The Complete Beginner's Guide to Choice Boards

Most choice boards are set up as grid of nine squares. My favorite choice boards embed images and include hyperlinks. Teachers differentiate the choices based on any number of approaches (ability, student interest, tiered assignments, etc.). In short, there isn’t a single “right” way to make a choice board. Just like any tool, it needs to be modified to meet the specific needs of the students you teach.

I’ve created a template and rounded up some examples (many can be edited directly) to get you started.
