What the research tells us, father’s day breakfast, father’s day testimonies, honorary awards, family photo booth, dad’s choir or band performance, father-child bonding activities, customized gifts, outdoor picnic, prayer for fathers, father’s day video montage, bbq cook-off, dedicate a song, final thoughts to celebrate dads, why celebrating dads matters.

Celebrating Father’s Day in church is essential for several reasons. Not only does it acknowledge the vital role fathers play in their families and communities, but it also provides an opportunity for spiritual growth and connection.

According to a Pew Research Center survey , 57% of U.S. adults believe that being a good father is very important to a man’s overall identity. By recognizing fathers’ contributions and celebrating their achievements, churches can help reinforce the significance of fatherhood and encourage dads to embrace their roles wholeheartedly.

Moreover, research published in the Review of Religious Research found that fathers’ religious involvement has a positive impact on their children’s well-being, including better emotional health and higher educational attainment. When churches celebrate Father’s Day and support dads in their spiritual journey, they contribute to the well-being of families and communities.

By organizing special Father’s Day events and activities, churches can create a sense of community, belonging, and spiritual growth for dads and their families. This, in turn, can lead to stronger connections between congregation members and a deeper appreciation for the role fathers play in the lives of their children and the broader community.

From heartfelt activities like testimonies and prayer, to fun-filled events like sports days and BBQ cook-offs, these ideas will create lasting memories and make every dad feel special on their special day.

Consider a Breakfast for Dad at Your Church Service

One of the best ways to kick off Father’s Day celebrations at your church is by organizing a delicious Father’s Day breakfast. This warm and welcoming event brings families together early in the day to share a meal, express their gratitude for the fathers in their lives, and set the stage for a memorable Father’s Day.

To make the breakfast a success, plan a hearty menu filled with dad-favorite dishes like pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage. You can also include healthier options like fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola. Consider inviting volunteers to help with cooking, serving, and setting up the dining area. Encourage families to contribute by bringing their dads’ favorite dishes to create a diverse and delicious spread.

Don’t forget to add a personal touch to the event with Father’s Day-themed decorations, such as balloons, banners, and table centerpieces. You can even have a designated area for kids to create handmade cards or crafts that their dads can take home as mementos.

By hosting a Father’s Day breakfast, your church will not only provide a fun and nourishing start to the day but also foster a sense of community and togetherness among your congregation. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to honor the fathers in your church and create lasting memories for everyone involved.

Another engaging Father’s Day idea for churches is to invite fathers to share their personal experiences, challenges, and joys of being a dad during the service. This can be a powerful way to celebrate fatherhood, inspire others, and deepen connections within the church.

To make this happen, reach out to fathers in your church ahead of time and encourage them to prepare a short testimony or reflection to share. Be sure to include a mix of fathers from different backgrounds, ages, and stages of parenthood to showcase diverse perspectives and experiences.

During the service, set aside a dedicated time for fathers to come forward and share a few words. These heartfelt testimonies will not only allow dads to express their thoughts and emotions but also provide valuable insights and encouragement to others in the congregation.

Recognizing outstanding fathers in your congregation is another great Father’s Day idea for churches. Presenting special awards or certificates of appreciation can make dads feel acknowledged, valued, and celebrated for their dedication to their families and communities.

Before the event, ask congregation members to nominate fathers who have made a positive impact on their families, the church, or the local community. You can create categories such as “Most Involved Dad,” “Most Inspiring Father,” or “Father of the Year” to celebrate different aspects of fatherhood.

During the service or a special Father’s Day event, present the awards or certificates to the nominated fathers, highlighting their accomplishments and contributions. This gesture will not only make the recipients feel special but also inspire other dads in the congregation to continue striving to be the best fathers they can be.

A photo booth is a fun way to show off a father's love

Setting up a family photo booth is a fun and creative Father’s Day idea for churches. It provides an opportunity for families to capture precious moments together, creating lasting memories with their dads on this special day.

Choose a well-lit area in your church and set up a backdrop with Father’s Day-themed decorations. Provide props such as funny hats, signs, and accessories to add a touch of fun and whimsy to the photos. You can either have a volunteer take the photos or set up a camera with a tripod and timer for a DIY approach.

After the event, share the photos on your church’s social media pages or send them to the families as a keepsake, giving them a tangible reminder of the love and appreciation they shared on Father’s Day.

Encouraging the fathers in your church to form a choir or band and perform a special song during the service is a unique and entertaining Father’s Day idea for churches. It showcases the musical talents of the dads in your congregation while also fostering camaraderie and teamwork.

Coordinate with the fathers well ahead of time, allowing them to choose a song, rehearse, and prepare for their performance. You can even enlist the help of your church’s music director or worship team to provide guidance and support.

On Father’s Day, the dads’ performance will not only be a delightful surprise for the congregation but also a fun and memorable experience for the fathers themselves.

Special events are great for Dads with kids of various ages

Organizing games and activities that encourage dads and their children to bond is another fantastic Father’s Day idea for churches. These activities can strengthen family relationships and create a lively atmosphere for the celebration.

Plan a variety of games that cater to different age groups and interests, such as a father-child relay race, a building contest, or even a friendly trivia competition. These activities should focus on teamwork, communication, and, most importantly, having fun together.

By offering engaging father-child bonding activities, your church will create a warm and joyful environment that encourages families to connect and celebrate the importance of fatherhood.

A Father's Day Gift is always a great opportunity

Encouraging children to create personalized gifts for their dads is a heartfelt and meaningful Father’s Day idea for churches. These handmade presents will not only make dads feel special but also give kids an opportunity to express their love and gratitude creatively.

Set up a crafting station with various materials, such as paper, markers, paints, and fabric, for children to make unique gifts like hand-painted ties, handprint art, or customized picture frames. You can also provide templates or examples for inspiration and have volunteers on hand to assist and guide the children.

These one-of-a-kind gifts will become cherished keepsakes for fathers, reminding them of the love and appreciation their children shared on Father’s Day.

A church Picnic is on ouf our favorite Fathers Day ideas

Hosting a church-wide picnic after the service is a wonderful Father’s Day idea for churches that allows families to spend quality time together while dads relax and enjoy the day. An outdoor picnic creates a fun and casual atmosphere where families can connect, share food, and participate in activities.

Choose a nearby park or even your church’s grounds for the picnic location, and encourage families to bring blankets, chairs, and their favorite dishes to share. Plan some games and activities, such as frisbee, soccer, or a scavenger hunt, to keep both children and adults entertained throughout the event.

An outdoor picnic offers a delightful way for your congregation to come together and celebrate Father’s Day while creating lasting memories and strengthening community bonds.

Dedicating a special time during the Father’s Day service to pray for the fathers in your congregation is a deeply meaningful Father’s Day idea for churches. Prayer acknowledges the importance of fatherhood and offers spiritual support and encouragement to the dads in your community.

Unfortunately, churches often skip this part of the service. While we would never forget to pray for Mom on Mother’s Day , dads are sometimes left in the cold.

During the service, invite a pastor or a church leader to lead the congregation in a prayer for fathers. Focus on asking for guidance, strength, and wisdom for dads as they navigate the joys and challenges of parenthood. Encourage congregation members to join in and pray for their own fathers or father figures.

This collective prayer will not only uplift the fathers in your church but also remind them that they have the support and love of their spiritual community.

Creating a Father’s Day video montage is a touching and memorable idea for churches to celebrate the dads in their congregation. The video can feature family members expressing their love and appreciation for their fathers, making it a heartwarming tribute to the important role dads play in their lives.

Before the event, ask church members to record short video messages or share photos of their fathers. Compile these clips and images into a montage, adding background music and transitions to enhance the presentation.

During the service, play the video montage on a large screen, allowing everyone to enjoy the heartfelt messages and happy memories. This visual tribute will not only make fathers feel loved and appreciated but also create a strong sense of unity and togetherness within the church community.

Work with the children's ministry to create a sports day

Organizing a sports day filled with friendly competitions is a fun and energetic Father’s Day idea for churches. This event encourages dads and their families to bond over physical activities, fostering teamwork and camaraderie among the participants.

Plan a variety of games and competitions suitable for different ages and skill levels, such as a father-child soccer match, a dads-only basketball game, or even a three-legged race. You can also include non-athletic activities like a bean bag toss or a giant Jenga game to ensure everyone can join in the fun.

A sports day not only offers a lively and entertaining way to celebrate Father’s Day but also promotes healthy competition, exercise, and quality time spent with loved ones.

Hosting a friendly BBQ cook-off is a delicious and entertaining Father’s Day idea for churches. This event allows dads to showcase their grilling skills and compete for the title of “Grill Master,” all while providing a tasty meal for the congregation to enjoy.

Select a suitable outdoor area at your church or a nearby park, and set up grilling stations for the participating fathers. Encourage them to bring their favorite recipes, marinades, and grilling tools. Create categories such as “Best Burger,” “Best Ribs,” or “Most Creative Dish” to add variety and excitement to the competition.

Invite congregation members to taste and vote on their favorite dishes, and announce the winners at the end of the event. A BBQ cook-off not only brings fathers and their families together over delicious food but also adds a lively, competitive element to the Father’s Day celebration.

Encouraging congregation members to dedicate a song to their dads is a heartfelt and personal Father’s Day idea for churches. This musical tribute allows individuals to express their love and gratitude for their fathers in a unique and meaningful way.

Before the event, ask congregation members to submit their song dedications, either by singing it themselves or having the church band perform it during the service. Be sure to collect a variety of songs that celebrate fatherhood and resonate with different members of your community.

On Father’s Day, incorporate the dedicated songs into the worship service, announcing each dedication and sharing a brief explanation of its significance. This musical tribute will not only make fathers feel special and appreciated but also create an emotional and uplifting atmosphere during the service.

An ugly tie competition is a great Father's Day idea

There’s no doubt that the dads in your congregation deserve a special celebration, and these 13 Father’s Day ideas provide the perfect opportunity to make it happen. With a blend of entertaining, heartwarming, and memorable activities, you’ll be able to unite families and show appreciation for the incredible fathers who make your church community so special.

In your planning, be sure to consider the unique interests and needs of the dads in your church. Whether it’s through friendly competition at a sports day or BBQ cook-off, or more tender moments of reflection and sharing during testimonies and dedicating songs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Creating an atmosphere of love, gratitude, and celebration is key to making every dad feel cherished and valued on their special day. Remember, we can bless our heavenly father when we honor dads here on earth.

Don’t forget to enlist the help of church members and volunteers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event for all.

As you bring your church community together to honor the amazing fathers among you, remember the lasting impact these celebrations can have. Father’s Day is a great day to introduce people to the Lord Jesus Christ.

By fostering connections, creating lasting memories, and supporting dads in their spiritual journeys, you’re contributing to the strength and unity of your church.

Happy planning, and may this Father’s Day be a truly unforgettable occasion for all the incredible dads out there!

25+ Ways To Celebrate Father’s Day

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission from purchased products at no additional cost to you. See my full disclosure here .

The state of Washington celebrated the first official Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Popularity slowly spread, and in 1972, Father’s Day became a national holiday in the USA. In the United States, the third Sunday in June is set aside for Father’s Day. Many other nations also celebrate Father’s Day.

Churches celebrate Father’s Day in different ways. Set aside this day to honor the men in your congregation, whether you pass out gifts or host an all-church BBQ. Encourage them in the Lord, and let them know you love them and are thankful for them.

When planning your giveaways, always plan extras for extended family or visitors who may attend. If you happen to have extras after your giveaway, encourage the men to take an extra or two and give them to a neighbor or co-worker for Father’s Day.

Honor Men On Father’s Day

You will find ideas for each of these categories in this blog post.

  • Gifts that can have a spiritual impact
  • Father’s Day activities before and after your church service
  • Ways to honor your men during your Sunday service
  • Photo booth ideas
  • Fun little gift tag ideas
  • Bacon ideas

Gifts That Can Have A Spiritual Impact

We are first citizens of the kingdom of God and second citizens on Earth. So whether they are mature Christians, babes in Christ, or have yet to realize their need for a Savior, giving gifts that can have a spiritual impact is always a good idea.

  • Jesus Nut Keychain: Key ring with a nut hung on it (no bolt or washer, just the nut) and a little card explaining the story of the Jesus Nut.
  • Devotion books or bookmarks
  • Create a printout: Dad’s Family Prayer Points At-A-Glance.

Father’s Day Activities Before Your Church Service

Activities before church services provide an opportunity for meaningful fellowship. Try one of these activities to allow the men to enjoy some guy time with some of their friends.

  • Set up a table with cooked bacon in the foyer. Before the service, men can stop at the table for a piece or two of bacon. Try a chocolate fountain to dip bacon in chocolate. If you can’t access a chocolate fountain, a small slow cooker with melted chocolate also works.
  • Serve donuts and coffee. If this is an every Sunday happening at your church, consider honoring your men by offering specialty creamer, coffee, or pastries just for them.
  • Have a potluck breakfast before service. Use one of the devotions from Year-Round Men’s Breakfast Ideas .
  • Set up a table for a Tie Exchange. The week or two before, ask men to bring in ties to donate for the exchange. Then on Father’s Day, each man can take a tie home. If you plan this well ahead of time, purchase various holiday ties to contribute to the table.
  • Serve cooked bacon in a waffle cone to men when they arrive at church.
  • Place coloring pages and crayons on a table in the lobby for children to make a picture for dad, grandpa, or another man at the church.
  • Place a bowl of Father’s Day Candy in your welcome area.

Honor Men During Your Sunday Service

Make the most of this day to honor and encourage men in their walk with the Lord and in their position with their families, whether they are fathers, sons, brothers, or uncles.

Prayer During Service

Ask the men of the church to stand and have a time of prayer over them for wisdom, blessings, guidance, and strength and for them to know the presence of God more deeply throughout the year. “In small church prayer times, members benefit from praying together with those they have relationships with. Some may be family and others are good friends. Their lives are intertwined. A small church ‘does life’ together.” (Quote from 3 Small Church New Year’s Events .)

Trading Places Skit

During service, invite some of your dads and kids to the front. Give a series of tasks to act out with a twist. The kids act as the “dad” while the dads as the “kids.” Tasks can include: “dad” comfort “child” who is crying, “dad” put a bandaid on the “child’s” arm, “dad” feed the “baby” some baby food, and “dad” help the “child” hammer a nail. Finish with the “child” hugging the “dad” and telling them they love them.

“God Is Our Father” Sermon

Tailor the sermon about the love our God, the Father, has for us.

Testimony Video

In April or May, reach out to fathers in your church and ask for volunteers to share a short testimony of God working in their lives or something that brought them joy on video. Create your video two or three weeks before Father’s Day. Then, show the video during your small church service as a testimony of God’s power for the men of the church.

Other Ideas

  • Invite two or three fathers to share a story about being a father and how that has helped them in their relationship with God, their Father.
  • Give a sermon based on The Lord’s Prayer.
  • During Sunday school on Father’s Day, gather the children to make the special popcorn found in 4 Easy Sunday School Father’s Day Crafts . Make enough for every man in the service. Have the children pass out bags of the special popcorn before the service is dismissed.
  • Keep the momentum of acknowledging the importance of your men and announce your next men’s event during service. Find a new idea in 24 Popular Men’s Events For Small Churches .

Celebrate Father’s Day After Your Church Service

  • All-church BBQ: If you have available funds, offer a drawing for a few big prizes that men can enter. Find ways to include everyone in your cookout in A Better Way To Include People In A Small Church Potluck .
  • Ice cream social with sundaes and rootbeer floats
  • Cookout hotdogs, burgers, and brats over a campfire
  • Bacon cheeseburger option: Only men have the bacon option for their burgers at a cookout.
  • Cakewalk after service: Ladies bring their favorite desserts, not just cake. To save time, since you want all men to win a prize, set up chairs in two lines, back-to-back. Tape 4” yellow star cut-outs on at least ⅓ of the chairs. Men who sit on the gold star chairs leave the game to choose a prize and more men join in the fun. Play until every man wins a prize.
  • Rootbeer Bar: Do a tasting of different rootbeer brands. Set up a Make Your Own Rootbeer Float. Or offer rootbeer float popsicles. Give the men a bottle of rootbeer to take home.
  • Milkshakes for Men: Offer milkshakes for the men, and lemonade, sweet tea, or water bottles for everyone else.
  • Food truck day: Give men coupons for something free. (The church can settle the coupon bill at the end of the event.) Donut truck, snow cone truck, taco truck, etc.
  • All-Church Lunch that features lots of meat, sandwiches, sides, and desserts. Give each man a party favor or a small gift to take home. At the beginning of your lunch, try one of the icebreaker questions found in Why Icebreakers Are Important In Small Churches .
  • Men’s Snack Mix Bar: Give men a mason or other jar to fill with snacks of their choice. Offer nuts, colored chocolate candies, chex mix or pub mix, flavored popcorn, and more.
  • Host a community Car Show in your church parking lot. Keep Your Senior Adults Connected And Engaged In Church gives ideas for a fantastic car show.

Photo Booth Ideas For Father’s Day

Photo booths build community, strengthen families, and even contain fun and laughs. Once your photo booth is all set up, use painter’s tape and make an X on the floor at the best spot to stand to take a picture to show your whole photo booth area.

  • Set up an area with a ladder and tool props.
  • Create an outdoor-looking space with fishing poles and a fishing theme.
  • Affix ties –– lots of them –– to the background wall.
  • Use something local for inspiration: amusement park, farm theme, outdoor activity.
  • Take photos, and then next week, present dads with photos of them with their family or friends.
  • For a general theme, use one of the Fun Little Gift Tag sayings below, and create a banner for your photo moment.

Fun Little Gift Tag Ideas

  • Donuts & coffee: “We DONUT what we’d do without you!”
  • Tape Measure: “Loved beyond measure”
  • BBQ Sauce: “You are awesomesauce!!”
  • Nuts: “We’re NUTS about you!”
  • Reese’s Pieces: “We love you to pieces!”
  • Box of 4 muffins: “We’d be muffin without you!”
  • Dude Food gift bag: jerky, sunflower seeds, granola bars, snacks: “You are one cool dude!”
  • Snapple with a label: “Have a Tea-riffic day!”
  • BBQ seasoning tag: Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season
  • Basket of snack-size chips: “You’re all that and a bag of chips!”
  • Novelty socks with a candy bar: “You knock our socks off!”
  • Moon Pies: “We love you to the moon and back!”
  • Flashlights: “For the men who light up our lives”

4 Bacon Ideas For Father’s Day

Bacon is often a common theme for Father’s Day. You can even find bacon pictures on Father’s Day greeting cards. So try one of these ideas to reach the bacon-lover dads in your small church congregation.

  • Set up a table with cooked bacon in the foyer. Then, before service, men can stop at the table for a piece or two of bacon.
  • Before or after service: Serve cooked bacon in a waffle cone to men when they arrive at church.
  • Take-home gifts: One-pound packages of bacon, bacon jam, maple bacon popcorn, or smoked bacon salt.
  • At the all-church dinner, offer men bacon for their cheeseburgers or hotdogs.

Honor & Appreciate On Father’s Day

Celebrating Father’s Day allows small church congregations to show the men in the church they are loved, valued, and cared about. Father’s Day is a time to remember the contributions and sacrifices men have made to support and care for those in their sphere of influence. Manhood offers stress and pressure. This day is a moment to let men know their efforts for their family, friends, and church are appreciated.

This Father’s Day, here are 25 powerful resources for preaching and worship — including sermons from Chuck Swindoll and Rick Warren — to help highlight the love of our Heavenly Father and to raise up godly fathers in your churches.

Father’s Day Sermons

1. The Merit of Our Mission, by Chuck Swindoll

All of life is a preliminary to the dawning of that day of the Lord, when He shall come riding on the clouds to claim His own. This place is not our home. We are pilgrims passing through, and we shall not rest until we rest IN HIM.

2. How God Tests Our Faith, by Rick Warren

We tend to get what we expect out of life. According to our faith, it will be done to us. Pastor Rick and Pastor Holladay teach four ways that God tests our faith.

3. How to Raise Positive Kids in a Negative World, by Chip Ingram

Chip Ingram offers advice from years of pastoring and parenting on how to raise spiritually strong kids in the midst of a godless world.

4. Present and Involved — A Real Father

Sermon highlights the importance of fathers being present, involved and speaking positively into the life of their children. Preached on Father’s day to challenge fathers to get involved in the life of their children.

5. Men Behaving Godly

Most of us have been exposed to the television’s portrayal of MEN BEHAVING BADLY. But I wonder how many of us have been exposed to the Bible’s portrayal of MEN BEHAVING GODLY? Would you agree with me that what the world needs today is not more men behaving Badly… What the world really needs today is more men behaving Godly.

6. The Legacy of Dad

This sermon will encourage the dads of your congregation for Father’s Day, not roast them… Dads need positive reinforcement on Fathers Day and this encourages dads to be all they can be in Christ.

7. A Father’s Day Message

Christian fatherhood is an important part of God’s plan and design the family. Paul writes that there are three important functions that Christian fathers must carry out.

8. The Inner Man

Strength from the Spirit of God in the inner man; strength in the soul; the strength of faith, to serve God, and to do our duty. If the law of Christ is written in our hearts, and the love of Christ is shed abroad there, then Christ dwells there.

9. Father’s Day

Notice that one of the responsibilities of John the Baptist was to “turn the hearts of the fathers to the children.” If ever there was a time that this needed to happen it is now.

10. A Father’s Fear

What will happen in the future with these four kids? How will I know they will survive or be safe in a harsh world? How can I know the future will be OK for them? In a real world of corrupting influences, where friends can be enemies, a world of economic downturns, where death and disease can strike with no warning, …oh, we fear for them.

11. Jairus (Father’s Day)

What did Jairus’ daugher see in her father as he sought the Saviors help on her behalf?

12. Dear Dad

The focus of this sermon is the important of young boys and men having positive male roles such as fathers, and uncles actively participating in their lives.

13. Father’s Day: Joseph

We are introduced to Joseph in the middle of a personal crisis. Having become engaged to a beautiful young girl, he has worked hard to establish an income to support his new bride and begin a family. He’s in love. He’s committed to Mary. He believed she loved him—that is, until he hears the news that his precious bride is pregnant.

14. The Fatherhood of God

Not everyone has the same experience with their earthly fathers. Some were tormented, even abused, by a godless man. Others were dominated by a tyrant. Others were ignored, or even deserted. And then there are some who never even knew who their earthly father was. But here is the hope – the promise – this morning: NONE OF US need live without the Fatherhood of God.

15. How to Become a Man After God’s Own Heart

If King David can become a man after God’s own heart, so can you; that if you desire to be all that God wants you to be.

16. Healing the “Father Absence” Wound

Today we take time to acknowledge and to thank those men in our lives that have served us as fathers. They may have been fathers, our grandfathers, our uncles, our older brothers, our coaches, our teachers, our counselors, our pastors, or that neighbor down the street. We thank those men who have taken the time to invest some of themselves into us, which has made us a better person today.

2017 Creative Father’s Day Ideas

2017 Creative Father’s Day Ideas

Here are some creative Father’s day ideas for your church service.  If you’re looking for Father’s Day videos, songs, themes, ideas, or scripture, you’ll find a good starting point here.

*New Video* Foster Kid Father’s Day

Not everyone has a good experience with their earthly Father.  This video helps to acknowledge the challenge of having less than perfect father experiences while providing a unique perspective on how we can look at God our heavenly Father in a new way.

If for some reason your church cannot afford to pay this cost and you would still like to use this video, please send me an email at loewen.dan (at) gmail.com.

Ideas & Themes

Our father in heaven service.

Structure your Father’s day service by walking through the Lord’s Prayer.  You can pick some themes from the prayer for different sections in your service.

  • “Hallowed be Your name” – pick some songs about God’s holiness, his worth, etc.
  • “Give us this day…” – Spend time in prayer for various needs.  Give thanks for the ways in which God provides.
  • “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those…” – This sets up nicely for a time of confession as well as reflection on who we might need to forgive in our lives.
  • “For thine is the Kingdom…” – Explore the ways in which we see God’s kingdom on earth and how we participate in seeing God’s kingdom coming on earth.

Prodigal Son Story & Dealing With Our Shame

At it’s crux, the prodigal son is less about the specific ways in which he failed, but more in the fact that he was extremely self aware of ‘missing the mark’ and his shame consumed his thoughts and actions.  Why else does a Son ask to go work as a slave if he hasn’t come to a point in his mind where he thinks very little of himself.  The pertinent question then is,  where in our lives do we miss the mark and then allow shame to separate or hinder our relationship with God.   (Note that often it’s the shame that can affect our relationship with God more profoundly then the actual failure we’ve experienced.)

Help the congregation reflect on where they are feeling shame and find a way to remind them that God the father welcomes them home with open arms.

A few song options:

  • Before the Throne of God above
  • Good Good Father
  • How Deep The Father’s love For Us
  • How He Loves Us
  • This is Amazing Grace
  • I Stand Amazed In The Presence

A Father Who Disciplines

“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?”  Hebrews 12:7

It’s interesting to explore and try to pinpoint the ways God is leading, coaching, and disciplining us to help us live more whole lives.

A Father Who Comforts

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort…” 2 Corinthians 1:3

Explore with the congregation the areas of life where we need God’s comfort.  So often we ignore hardship and fail to create space for lament.  Your Father’s day service might be just the place to create some space for lament and help people reflect on how God their heavenly Father can bring them comfort.

A Father Who Mentors

Find an example of someone in your congregation who has learned or been taught by their father.  For example my Dad taught me how to cut grass and run a lawn-care business.  Use the story and the example to transition into how God teaches and mentors us or how we can disciple and mentor one another.

Pray for Fathers

Spend time with a dedicated prayer for Fathers.  Being a dad isn’t easy and  most Dad’s are really trying their best.  I think every Dad out there would appreciate prayer that they can continue to be loving, caring, supportive, providing, and demonstrating to their kids what it means to be a follower of Christ… etc.

Father’s Share Their Story

Pick 3 Father’s of various ages in your congregation and have them briefly share in a 5 -10 minutes what they have learned being a Father and what it’s taught them about their relationship with God.

While we certainly want to help people have a meaningful experience of God as Father – Father’s day can also be a fun time to exploit the typical Father stereotypes and have a little fun.

Lazy-boy Sermon

Have someone bring a lazy-boy and set it up in the sanctuary.  Then nominate either the oldest father or youngest father to come and listen to the sermon while relaxing in the lazy boy.

Dad related snacks

Dad’s cookies, or Dad’s Root beer are always a staple, along with pretty much any other type of chocolate or candy.  Having kids hand them out at the end of a service is an added bonus.

7 Father’s Day Ideas for Churches

Are you struggling for ideas for celebrating Father’s Day at your church? With a little creativity and excellent execution, your church can host a memorable and honoring Father’s Day. Here are seven ideas for celebrating Father’s Day this June.

father's day presentation for church

Are you struggling for ideas for celebrating Father’s Day at your church?

Maybe you’ve never seen Father’s Day done really well, celebrated only with clichés (golf- and football-themes, ties, and BBQ gear) that don’t really hit on the heart of fatherhood. Maybe you’ve experienced or witnessed the pain of a day that reminds some of broken relationships and absent dads.

Here’s the truth about celebrating Father’s Day at church: No one exhibits or demonstrates Fatherly love more than God Himself (2 Corinthians 6:18). Your church community is the perfect place to not only honor and celebrate dads, but to touch on the love of a perfect heavenly Father.

With a little creativity and excellent execution, your church can host a memorable and honoring Father’s Day. Here are seven ideas for celebrating Father’s Day this June.

Father’s Day Ideas for 2022

This year, Father’s Day falls on June 19th. But that doesn’t mean you can’t start celebrating earlier in the month, or host an event on another weekend.

Here are seven ideas for celebrating Father’s Day during your Sunday service, or if you’d like, on a Sunday afternoon, Saturday morning, or weekday evening.

1. Highlight fatherhood in the message.

Some of us have amazing biological fathers who cared for us, affirmed us, and taught us integrity and character. But fatherhood can be a painful topic for others. More than one in four children in the U.S. live without a father. Even adult children struggle with their dads. And pscyhologists find that issues that adults experience can often be traced to having strained relationships with their dads.

Acknowledging that Father’s Day can be painful–and that some (or many) dads don’t measure up to Biblical fatherhood–shows empathy and authenticity. The very, very good news about this is that we are all loved and known by a perfect Father.

The Bible is packed with Scriptures on the Father nature of God. Here are a few jumping points for talking about the character of God as a Father.

  • I will be a father to him, and he'll be a son to me. When he does wrong, I'll discipline him in the usual ways, the pitfalls and obstacles of this mortal life. But I'll never remove my gracious love from him. (2 Samuel 7:14-15)
  • I will guide you in the way of wisdom and I will lead you in upright paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered, and when you run, you will not stumble. (Proverbs 4:11-12)
  • There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place. (Deuteronomy 1:31)
  • Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? (Hebrews 12:7)
  • But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. (Luke 15:20)

Teaching on these Scriptures on Father’s Day can help remind your church community that Biblical fatherhood is about love, gracious discipline, guidance, care, strength, and compassion.

2. Host a BBQ for dads and their children.

It may be rare in some families for dads to get one-on-one time with their kids. A special BBQ or picnic can be a great opportunity for dads to have quality time with their children, enjoy a tasty lunch, and feel celebrated.

Here are some ideas for a Father’s Day BBQ that rocks.

  • Ask for volunteers. To plan a BBQ picnic with a ton of kids, ask for volunteers who can help with preparing food, serving, and watching children (By the way, if coordinating with volunteers is a struggle, Tithe.ly can help you manage and check in your volunteers quickly and efficiently).
  • Play games. Dads like doing things with their kids. Cornhole, bocce ball, and frisbee are all fun picnic games that most kids can participate in. Provide a few activities that keep energy levels and participation high.
  • Keep it simple. Choose a simple, delicious menu. Grilled chicken and burgers, chips, and watermelon are all tasty and require minimal prep.

Finally, take a few moments at the beginning of the event to give vision for celebrating fatherhood. Honor different dads in your church community, speak from Scripture on fatherhood, and affirm everyone. This is a day to celebrate!

3. Celebrate dads in children’s ministry.

Too often, Father’s Day can feel like an afterthought to children. Focusing on the topic of fatherhood in children’s ministry can give kids an opportunity to connect with their dads and understand the heart of God.

Here are some ideas for celebrating Father’s Day in your children’s ministry:

  • Homemade frames, cards, and keychains are easy gifts that kids of any age can make for their dads. You can integrate Scripture into these gifts to create a “teaching moment” for young children on God’s heart for us as a Father.
  • Preparing a play or singalong just for Father’s Day is a fun way to prepare for the special day. Re-enacting the story in Luke 15 or singing “How Great the Father’s Love For Us” are two ideas that draw on Scripture to celebrate Father’s Day.
  • Interviewing children about their dads and then creating a short video to show on Sunday morning is a sweet way to highlight and honor dads in the church.

Finally, remember to be sensitive with children who don’t have dads. Find ways to support those children through quality time with father figures or male mentors in the church.

4. Host a friendly tournament or competition.

Hosting a tournament, game day, or individual competition can be a fun, creative way to bring your church community together for Father’s Day.

Though we may not be accustomed to competing in church, a friendly spirit of competition can have a positive impact. Psychology Today says that “ good competitiveness….can bring out the best in people .” Coordinating an activity where dads, kids, and male mentors in the church can participate in a game can foster camaraderie, drive, and intentionality.

Here are some ideas for a Father’s Day event that rocks.

  • Create a tournament. A tournament with tiers for different ages and levels of athleticism creates a competition that everyone can participate in. You can even create teams based on different ministry teams and ages, just for fun (leadership team, worship team, volunteers, youth ministry).
  • Plan a game day with different activities. A field day with all different types of activities–tug of war, dodge ball, soccer, an egg toss–is a good way to bring everyone on board, and keeps the focus off of a single game.
  • Host a contest. Competition doesn’t have to center around sports or athleticism. Host a contest for best burger, best business plan, best original song, or best t-shirt design for fathers and their children.

Ultimately, Father’s Day can be a great opportunity for community-building and fun. Planning an event outside of church can also give busy families an opportunity to celebrate without having to plan something themselves.

5. Free coffee!

If your church has a fancy coffee bar with lattes and espresso, then give the dads free coffee on Father’s Day. Everyone can appreciate a hot beverage (or cold brew), and even something as simple as a free cup of coffee can help dads to feel appreciated.

Other free stuff your church can give out: Books, merchandise (such as hats, t-shirts, or mugs), or even tickets to an upcoming conference or workshop event.

6. Build something together as a church.

Like a game or competition, building something together can help build camaraderie and impart a sense of purpose to community. If you’ve got a few dads in your community that are handy with a toolbox or woodworking, leverage those skills to build something–a shed, new signage, a large picnic table, or even a church garden.

Building something together is certainly a more labor-intensive way to celebrate Father’s Day, but the pay-off is significant: a finished product that commemorates fatherhood in your community. Plus, the activity can help teach kids–and other dads–in your church practical skills and new confidence.

7. Create a mentorship program.

If your church has a strong discipleship culture, then you’re already aware of the power of effective mentorship. If your community hasn’t honed in on discipleship in specific, practical ways, then Father’s Day may be a great opportunity to grow this kind of culture.

Mentorship empower your church members to use their God-given gifts to teach and influence others towards Christ.

A mentorship program can:

  • Bring men together in a way that’s healthy, constructive, and encouraging to others.
  • Have constructive impact on youth. Youth with mentors are 52% less likely to skip a day of school, and 46% less likely to use illegal drugs .
  • Bring a much-needed father element to mentorship. There are far more female mentors than males. There are twice as many boys waiting for male mentors in the Big Brothers of America program than there are girls waiting for female mentors in the Big Sister program.
  • Cause a “multiplying effect” on mentorship. When kids experience the power of mentorship, they are more likely to replicate the same experience for others as they get older.

Father’s Day can be used as a launch date or kick-off party for a mentorship program that specifically focuses on mentoring young boys. If you’re in a community where fatherlessness is more common, this can be particularly powerful.

Father’s Day: An Opportunity to Build Community

At the end of the day, any holiday is simply one more opportunity to build community in your church. People are craving more connection than ever, and the church has the power to help meet this need. Don’t get hung up on staying within the boundaries of what feels appropriate for a specific holiday. Instead, think about the needs of your church members.

If a Father’s Day picnic would be a much-appreciated opportunity for fathers and children to connect, then plan for a churchwide event. If kicking off a mentorship program would be a more sensitive and practical way to celebrate Father’s Day, then take steps to organize a sustainable mentorship program in your community.

5 Ways to Make Dad Feel Special at Church this Father's Day

At many churches, three of the weekends with highest attendance are Easter, Christmas, and Mother’s Day. But don’t forget to celebrate Father’s Day as well! Father’s Day can be a great opportunity to reach out to your community, celebrate men, and show God’s love. Here are five ways to make dads feel special at church this Father’s Day .

Acknowledge Men in Every Life Stage

As you celebrate dads at church this Father’s Day, spend some time acknowledging men in other life stages as well. It’s likely you have men in your congregation who wish they were fathers or who recently had children move out of the house. Holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are painful for many people, so make sure you’re sensitive to their pain.

In addition to celebrating biological and foster fathers, celebrate people who have taken a fatherly role in someone else’s life! Even if someone doesn’t have children of their own, they’ve probably mentored younger people, including their nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Celebrate anyone who’s taken a fatherly role in someone else’s life.

Preach a Sermon Dedicated to the Dads

This is a given that we’re sure you’re planning on doing already. Preaching a sermon that is specifically dedicated to the dads in your church not only honors them as fathers, but can be used as an example of God’s presence and love for his children. Here are a few Father’s Day sermon series on Ministry Pass that would be great to use for this special day. (Plus: All three series guides can be imported right into your Sermonary dashboard so you can begin your sermon writing and preparation with ease!)

Lasting Legacy: A Father’s Day Message

Involve Kids in the Celebration

Bring the kids and youth at your church into the celebration! Let kids make a craft for their fathers or grandfathers in your Kids’ Ministry classes. If possible, surprise dads with a high quality project, like a coffee mug, decorated tie, or painted canvas.

Invite middle and high school students into the celebration as well. Plan a Father’s Day decorating day at the church, letting students help create a fun atmosphere for the weekend. Buy props and supplies for a photobooth and let your students set it up using their own ideas and imagination.

Give Fathers a Gift

Nothing says “we appreciate you” like a gift. Buy dads a small gift like a mug, tshirt, coffee card, or sunglasses. As mentioned before, involve the kids or youth in creating or displaying the gifts.

Want to take this idea to the next level? In addition to small gifts for every dad who attends, create a Father’s Day gift basket and ask men to fill out your Connection Card to enter a drawing to win. This will allow you to continue the conversation with them after Father’s Day, since you’ll have their contact information.

Everyone loves food! This Father’s Day, host a barbeque or potluck after church. Ask your fellowship team or a women’s group to plan, prepare, and serve the meal so the fathers in your church can enjoy it without doing any of the work.

Or, instead of a barbeque or potluck, host a Bacon Festival! Create trays of different flavored bacon (chocolate dipped, caramel dipped, and more) and allow people to sample all the flavors. Put together a gift basket with bacon-themed prizes and a package of bacon and give it away to one lucky winner!

Continue the Celebration

Don’t just celebrate fathers once a year – keep the celebration going! To show fathers and other men that you value and care about them, launch a new mens’ discipleship group or small group (or promote your current groups ). Host other events for men over the summer. Don’t let the celebration end. Dads and other men in your church will feel even more special if you’re intentional about connecting with them, reaching them, and ministering to them year-round.
