My most unforgettable trip to rishikesh, about my trip to rishikesh.

In the evening of 25th January 2009, I received a call from one of my friends that he was planning for a one day trip to some nearby tourist destination. On his asking I reached his place and found that three more of our common friend's were already there. During the course of discussion, the destination was finalised as Rishikesh which was at a distance of around 240 km from Delhi.

After completion of dinner, we began our journey at about 8 PM. I noticed then, that except me and Rajul, the other three friends didn't even bother to carry any extra clothes thinking that the journey is only for a day so there was no necessity of carrying the same. You will see as to how they repented later for this small callousness.

I sat just by the driver side and Rajul took on the driving seat. The other three friends took the rear seat and they were happy too, as they can easily take a nap during the journey. But I knew that Rajul was new to driving and I have to remain vigilant and assist him where needed. Actually Rajul had purchased a new car Hyundai Santro just few months back and it was going to be his first outstation drive.

The things were fine till we crossed Delhi border, but as soon as we reached Hindon River crossing bridge, we were amidst dense fog . It was so severe that we were unable to see beyond 5-6 feet. The other 3 friends on the rear seat were enjoying sleep and I and Rajul were struggling to deal with the precarious situation caused by the dense fog.

In those days lot of road construction activity was also going on and as such it was full of dust and potholes at many of the stretches of the road. This was making it all more difficult.

We moved slowly and then followed the blinking tail light of a bus just with a hope that somehow we will reach our destination. It was completely a dreadful situation. Thankfully the bus was destined to Haridwar and following it we reached Haridwar at about 3 AM. Then we booked a room on rent in a small hotel and had a sound sleep there.

The water was bone chilling and the flow in the river was high. You have to remain very cautious while bathing in such condition. For the safety of tourists the authorities had placed iron chains throughout the river bank. We by catching hold of chains took bath in the river Ganga.

The water was ice cold. As I took a deep in the water the body started shivering. But by chanting " Har Har Gange " and " Om Namah Shivay " we somehow gathered inner strength to face that experience. It was quite a refreshing feel thereafter. Then we had breakfast in a nearby restaurant and we left for Rishikesh which was our next destination.

Rishikesh is at a distance of around 19-20 km from Haridwar. The journey begins and we young lads were all very excited. After all it was our first journey there and the view was amazing. The road travelled through forest areas and there was little habitation at many of the locations.

Then we reached Rishikesh near Lakshman Jhula at around 11:45 AM. and contacted one of the river rafting agencies who after filling in some forms and taking deposit of Rs 300/- per head asked us to board their commercial vehicle and then took us to Shivpuri which was about 17 km upstream. The road through the hills was very dangerous and undulating and we saw that road widening work was also in progress at that time.

After reaching the banks of river Ganges in Shivpuri we were simply flattened to see how immensely beautiful the entire scene was. The colour of water was Emerald Green . There were huge rocks and pebbles on the banks of the river.

I could hear the sound of gushing water from the river and the air passing through the mountains. It was quite windy that day and we could easily hear the whistle like sound due to air flowing through the mountains.

Although I was thrilled by the beauty, but my heart was thumping from within as in the next few moments I had to join river rafting in this mighty river. The inner nervousness was more so because of the fact that I didn't know to swim.

We clicked some of the photos and we heard that the rafting instructor was giving a call to all of us to reach him. Hearing his call we started moving towards the raft.

Then the guide asked all of us including other fellow rafters to lift the raft and take to the river. We followed his instructions and then one by one we boarded the raft and after a few rehearsals we were ready for the white water rafting.

Then we reached a place where the water was comparatively calm. The guide asked us to leave the raft and jump into water. Three of my friends immediately did so as they were well versed in swimming. But I remained there on the raft and took a few pics of my friends while they were in the water.

A Thrilling & Terrible Experience

The moment I jumped from the raft, immediately I went several feet deep inside the water. The water looked green everywhere and I even noticed a few debris flowing inside the water. I was immersed in icy water and was gasping. Soon I bounced back on the water surface, but at a certain distance from the raft and noticed that I was flowing with the river current away from the raft. I heard the raft instructor saying me not to panic and you won't be drowned! I controlled my nerves a bit but was simultaneously flowing with the river.

The guide immediately threw a safety rope to me and catching the same I came back to the raft. Since I had never experienced such a feel I was literally taken aback. The experience which I had then cannot be expressed in words.

In simple words, the experience was thrilling, but horrible too.

Then the instructor also took us to a jumping point from where few people also took a dive to river Ganga. We didn't try that but went to a place where a spring was opening into the river. That water was a bit warm and we felt quite relaxed there.

As I remember we also had delicious maggie at this point which was being cooked by local people there. After that we again came back to the raft and started to move downstream towards Rishikesh with our clothes totally drenched in Ganga water. I noticed that we were all filled with lots of energy and excitement. And why not! After all we were all witnessing very first and next level of experience in life.

Then finally we landed on the banks of river Ganga . There was fine sand on that part and my friends and I relaxed there for a while. We were all in complete silence at that time and were diving into the moments we experienced just a few minutes back.

Finally the trip was over and we had to return back to Delhi. I and Rajul changed our clothes, but the three other fellows were not having any extra clothes as they didn't found it necessary to carry. What to say, they finally covered the entire journey to Delhi wearing towels and shivering in the cold. Thankfully the car had a heater blower which came to their rescue.

Really it was one of the most adventurous and memorable journeys.

Conclusion:

Rishikesh is one of the most beautiful places in Uttarakhand .

Nearest railway station is at Rishikesh and nearest airport at Dehradun and then at New Delhi.

Avoid visiting in the rainy season as River rafting is not organised at that time.

If you want to visit in winter then avoid night driving as foggy conditions may obstruct visibility.

While doing white water rafting, follow all the safety norms. Respect the power of nature and do not venture into places without the instruction of the instructor.

There are lots of tourist destinations nearby Rishikesh.

Rafting is a sport in which rafters use an inflatable raft to race with other teams. The team that reaches the destination first wins the race. The racing is done on white water or rough water of different degrees. The rafters use double blades to paddle the boat.

Rafting should not be confused with canoeing, kayaking, rowing or dragon boat because all these variants use different boats and they have different sets of rules.

Rafting and Canoeing

This is a sport in which either an individual or a team can participate. Here one needs to race by rafting. Similarly other participants will also be chasing. The participant whose raft touches the finishing line first is declared as winner. Both men and women can participate in this sport.

Difference between Rafting and Canoeing

In rafting, inflatable rafts are used while in canoeing, boats are used which are pointed at both ends.

In canoeing, a leader decides in which direction the boat has to go while there is no such thing in rafting.

In canoeing, the leader tells the player at the back to turn the gear to a desired direction while in rafting all the team members are responsible to change the direction and balance the boat.

Difference between Rafting and Kayaking

In kayaking, the boat is covered with deck while the boat used in rafting is open boat.

Kayak is moved by double-bladed paddles while a raft is moved by single-bladed paddle.

Kayak is made up of plastic while a raft is made up of any material that is buoyant. The material mostly used is PVC.

A Brief History of Rafting

In earlier days, people used to transport things using rafts, hence the name of rafting came into the picture. In 1842, Lieutenant John Fremont of the U.S. Army first introduced rafting expedition on the Platte River. In ancient days, rafts were made from rubber cloth tubes and a floor.

In 1960s, white water rafting became more widely recognized and white water rafting companies were established. In 1970s, white water rafting made its major changes as leisure sport when it was included in the Olympic Games. In 1980s, as the popularity of rafting was increasing gradually, number of independent companies were started throughout Scotland, South America and Africa.

In 1990s, rafting was included in major events like the Barcelona Games in 1992, Atlanta Games in 1996, and the white water events of the Summer Olympic Games hosted by Ocoee River in Tennessee Valley. The International Federation of Rafting (IRF) was established in 1997. In 1999, the first Official International Championship was held.

Nowadays, white water rafting is still gaining a huge number of popularity.

Participating Countries

Rafting comes under water sport. Since its inception, the popularity and demand of this sport by different nations grew exponentially since 1997 after instituted in International Federation of Rafting.

Many Asian and Non-Asian countries have their active participation in this sport. Countries like India, Morocco, Bulgaria, Nepal, France, Wales, Switzerland and Scotland have dominated other countries in this sport. The countries that organized the championships of rafting are as follows −

Experience the awe of nature by river rafting in Rishikesh

essay on river rafting

It was a scorching sunny day (like any other day in Delhi Summer), when I decided to get into the fresh waters of Rishikesh and immediately set about making arrangements for a weekend getaway for a sporty time in the gushing Ganga of the holy city.

On Friday night I boarded a bus to Rishikesh, thinking about the last time I had been there. That time Rishikesh was just a stopover for my journey ahead to Harsil (town between Gangotri and Rishikesh).

While at Harsil, I camped with the strenuous Ganga flowing below us reminding us of her might and when I arrived in Rishikesh, I saw a similar setting. The camps were set on the sandy riverside with the holy river flowing in its full supremacy.

Soon after a light and quick breakfast we were prepped for the main act and the reason why I was in Rishikesh – river rafting.

Festive offer

River rafting experience was not new to me. I had enjoyed the sport earlier in the Teesta River in Sikkim. However, I could not enjoy my most in Teesta, which is said to be a better rafting experience than Rishikesh for its unfathomable rapids and the velocity of the river itself. However, due to certain restrictions, I could only grapple till level 2 rapids in Teesta.

rishikesh-1

While my next trip to the gorgeous North East is till due, I wished for a full-fledged rafting experience and therefore I took the plunge in Ganga.

The rafting stretch was divided in six levels (Sweet 16, Cross Fire, The Blind Mice, The Wall, Roller Coaster and the Golf Course) and covered four grades of rafting. With each rise in level the rapids grew in strength. Ganga’s potency was better understood as it came with full force, dwindling the balance as it smacked you across the face. The cool refreshing water was a delight.

rishikesh-story-2

For almost an hour and half covering a 16-km stretch we rowed with strength tearing the powerful rapids. It was almost surreal as we battled against the rivers’ enormous torrents.

For a fitting end to the rafting experience, was another sport of cliff jumping. (Source: Simran Kaur)

For a fitting end to the rafting experience, was another sport of cliff jumping. Feeing nervous, I climbed the cliff and looked down at the flowing Ganga, only to get jittery. And in one swift act of bravado I took a free fall from the cliff without any support and landed searing in the cold river water. As I grappled with the surroundings trying to keep afloat I could not help but feel meek and diminished before the nature’s awesomeness.

If I thought that there can be no better end to this day, then I was wrong. As we returned to our camps and dried ourselves, the sun had been gulped in by the valley of Rishikesh. It was then in the dimly lit campsite with the gushing sound of Ganga still going about its business, against the silhouette of a valley, that I really bowed down to the overwhelming power of the place.

The next morning, however much the rustic beauty of Rishikesh pulled me back, with a heavy heart and slightly painful muscles, I packed my bags and made way to the city’s scorching heat.

Short Essay on River in 100 Words

A river is a naturally flowing stream of water. Rivers usually rise from a mountain or large lake and flow towards an ocean, sea, or another river. Many rivers are seasonal and are fed by rainwater or snow water. Some rivers flow into the ground and dry up before reaching another water body. Rivers bring not just water but also silt, which gets deposited on the banks, making the soil fertile.

Rivers provide cheap transportation, an easy source of food, and fresh water for drinking, cleaning, and farming. Most of the ancient civilizations like those in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and India, settled around rivers. Rivers are truly the cradle and the backbone of human civilization.

Short Essay on River in 200 Words

A river is a naturally flowing stream of water that flows from high altitude to low altitude due to the force of gravity. Rivers usually rise from a mountain or large lake and flow towards an ocean, sea, or another river. They can be perennial rivers that flow throughout the year or seasonal rivers which carry either rainwater or snow water.

Some rivers flow into the ground and dry up before reaching another water body. Small rivers are often called streams, brooks, creeks, or rivulets. Many small rivers often join bigger rivers forming their tributaries. Bigger rivers then flow to even bigger water bodies.

As rivers flow from highlands to lowlands, they don’t just bring water but also silt. This silt gets deposited on the river banks making the soil extremely fertile. Most of the ancient civilizations like those in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China and India, settled around rivers as rivers made farming possible.

Rivers also provide a cheap mode of transportation, nutritious food in the form of fish, and fresh water for drinking, cleaning, and other activities. In many places, rivers are used to generate electricity, drive machinery as well as dispose of sewage and waste.

Rivers are truly the cradle and the backbone of human civilization. They have given us life for thousands of years. It is our duty now to keep them clean and save them.

Short Essay on River in 400 Words

A river is a natural watercourse that flows from high altitude to low altitude due to the force of gravity. Rivers usually rise from a mountain or large lake and flow towards an ocean, sea, or another river. They can be perennial rivers that flow throughout the year or seasonal rivers which carry either rainwater or snow water.

As rivers flow from highlands to lowlands, they don’t just bring water but also silt. This silt gets deposited on the river banks making the soil extremely fertile. Most of the ancient civilizations like those in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and India, settled around rivers as rivers made farming possible.

When a river enters a sea, ocean, or stagnant body of water, the sediment it brings usually forms a delta as the slow-moving water of the larger water body is unable to carry the sediment away. River deltas are very fertile as well and are good for growing a variety of crops.

Rivers provide a cheap mode of transportation as not just people but also heavy goods can be easily transported from one place to another via boats and ships. We get nutritious food from rivers in the form of fish and fresh water for drinking, cleaning, and irrigation. Rivers can also support recreational activities like boating, swimming, river rafting, and sport fishing. In many places, rivers are used to generate electricity, drive machinery as well as dispose of sewage and waste.

Rivers have always been recognised as life-givers and have been held sacred as well as worshipped in many cultures. In India, the river Ganges and Yamuna are considered goddesses while in Ancient Egypt, the River Nile was seen as a gift from the gods.

Rivers don’t just benefit humans but are also home to many species of insects, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, birds, and animals. Different types of small and large fishes, worms, snails, turtles, frogs, small birds, snakes, and otters as well as aquatic plants, bacteria, and algae from the ecosystems of rivers.

So, that’s all about writing essays on rivers. In this session, I have tried to keep the overall approach and the language as simple as possible for the students. I hope, you have found this session helpful as per your requirements. If you want me to cover any special topic, let me know through some quick comments.

Video of deadly fight that led to Apple River stabbing shown during opening arguments of Nicolae Miu trial

By Stephen Swanson , Jonah Kaplan , Riley Moser

Updated on: April 3, 2024 / 9:33 AM CDT / CBS Minnesota

HUDSON, Wis. — Investigators say video from July 2022 shows  Nicolae Miu  being pushed and hit by a group of tubers on the river before he stabbed five people, killing 17-year-old  Isaac Schuman . The victims ranged in age from 17 to 24 and were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Follow day 3 of the trial here

The trial for a 54-year-old Prior Lake man accused of killing a teen and stabbing four others on the Apple River in Wisconsin nearly two years ago began on Monday.

Witnesses said Miu was initially in the river with goggles and a snorkel. A group of tubers accused of him of looking at young girls underwater, but Miu told investigators he was looking for a friend's missing cellphone.

The prosecution argues that Miu was the aggressor by stabbing five people. A knife, believed to belong to Miu, was later recovered by officers on the river bank.

Miu's defense attorneys, though, see it much differently, saying the teens taunted him, then surrounded him, and Miu was fighting for his life.

He is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in Schuman's death, and attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the stabbings of Ryhley Mattison, A.J. Martin, Dante Carlson and Tony Carlson. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in September 2022.

If convicted, Miu could be sentenced to life in prison.

Opening statements

The prosecution

The trial began with the opening statement from state prosecutor Karl Anderson, who called the deadly attack "senseless and horrific."

"All Nicolae had to do was walk away," Anderson said. "He eventually did walk away, but not after stabbing five people."

Anderson showed several screenshots from two videos taken by one of the members of Schuman's group, identified as Jawahn C.

Anderson said a member of Miu's group named Ariel dropped his cellphone in the river. Ariel said it wasn't that big of a deal because he had insurance, but Miu insisted on trying to retrieve it.

Miu approached Schuman's group. In the first video, approximately nine seconds in length, Jawahn C. is heard yelling "(Miu) says he's looking for little girls!"

In the second video, Miu is shown running towards Schuman's group.

A group of adult tubers, identified as the Carlson group, then came over to intervene. The Schuman group is heard cheering when they arrive.

While showing several screenshots from the second video, which is almost 3 minutes and 30 seconds long, Anderson underlined that audio in the video indicates Miu was asked more than 20 times by the Schuman and Carlson groups to go away.

In the several screenshots, Anderson noted that before the physical confrontations begin, Miu appeared to be "smirking" while holding his knife low by his side. Anderson also stated that at no point did Miu speak or tell anyone to get back, and he didn't step back or walk away from the groups.

miu-trial-miu-with-schuman-group.jpg

Anderson said the first time the confrontation turned physical was when Miu punched a member of the Carlson group named Madison. Another member of the group, Dante Carlson, then punched Miu, causing him to fall into the shallow river.

Anderson said in a 25-second span, Miu then stabbed four members of the Carlson group: A.J. Martin, Ryhley Mattison, Dante Carlson and Tony Carlson. Miu also fatally stabbed Schuman, who suffered wounds to his torso, chest and heart.

"You don't see anyone besides Nicolai with a weapon. You don't see the boys touch Nicolai until after stabbings start," Anderson said.

Anderson said no one in either group was initially aware that Miu was stabbing people until they saw Martin in the water, who had been disemboweled. Anderson also pointed out that Miu had his knife's blade pointed upwards in the attacks.

miu-trial-miu-surrounded-by-groups-before-attack.jpg

Afterward, Anderson said Miu walked back to his tubing group and told them "they took his knife." Several members of Miu's group called 911 to say several people were hurt, but they said they didn't know what happened. His group stayed at a sandbar until law enforcement arrived. One member of his group also helped some of the victims before speaking with police.

Anderson said Jawahn C. took a screenshot of Miu from the video and gave it to law enforcement, who quickly disseminated it. Employees then spotted Miu and alerted deputies, who then took Miu — who was then clothed and wearing a hat and sunglasses — into custody. Anderson said members of Miu's group protested his arrest, saying they "had the wrong guy."

Anderson said when Miu was in the back of a squad car at the scene, he allegedly said to the sheriff, "What's going on? I hear somebody got stabbed and I fit the description." Miu was then told he was under arrest for homicide and attempted murder.

miu-trial-carlson-group-argues-with-miu.jpg

When he was interviewed later by law enforcement, Anderson said Miu was surprised to find there was video of the attacks. He told investigators he didn't have a knife, but members of Schuman's group were armed with knives. Miu allegedly said they knocked off his goggles and snorkel and threw them in the water and they tried to pull his pants down.

"I just grabbed the kid's knife. I didn't even know if I was holding it right. I just grabbed it from him because he tried to poke me with it, so, I feared for my life," Miu said, according to a transcript shown in a slide by Anderson.

miu-trial-mius-knife-found-on-riverbank.jpg

Anderson said Miu went on to tell investigators that he didn't know where the knife was that he used to defend himself with, but later a member from Miu's group told investigators they saw him "throw something onto shore before walking back to their group."

Anderson said when investigators told him four people were hurt and one died, Miu allegedly said, "Was that because they fought each other?"

Investigators later recovered Miu's knife on a river bank, and it tested positive for DNA from some of the victims.

The defense

Defense attorney Aaron Nelson's opening statement repeatedly hammered home that Miu stabbed the other tubers in self-defense because he feared for his life.

Nelson began his statements with biographical details on Miu, who grew up in Romania and immigrated to the U.S. as a teen. He said Miu speaks several languages and described him as an "intelligent" and "peaceful" man.

He also emphasized that Miu was an "unfit 260-pound man" who had undergone a quadruple bypass surgery two years before the deadly encounter.

miu-trial-miu-seen-holding-knife.jpg

Nelson said Miu only brought his knife at the request of a friend so they could use it to cut the twine needed to connect the group's tubes before they coasted down the river. He said Miu likes to snorkel and brought his equipment, eventually using it to find his friend's phone.

Nelson described Schuman's group as "drunk teens" who were "smoking stuff." He also said Schuman's autopsy results revealed he had a blood alcohol level of .219, and his friends later told investigators Schuman was the most sober one in their group that day.

Nelson said the group began to "heckle" and "humiliate" Miu based on his appearance and loudly accused him of being a "raper" who was "looking for little girls." Nelson also pointed out that there were no "little girls" near the groups during the altercation.

miu-trial-schuman-group-celebrates-when-miu-is-pushed-down.jpg

He said Miu began to run towards Schuman's group because he saw one of them hold up what he believed to be the cellphone he was searching for, and dropped his goggles and snorkel into the river in the process.

Nelson accused Schuman's group of then threatening Miu with physical harm.

"'You got 10 seconds,' that's what that group of drunk teenagers says to that old man," Nelson said.

He said Miu then began to walk towards the Carlson group to appeal to them, but the group was immediately hostile. Nelson said an older member of the Carlson group, Quentin Carlson, later told investigators that he sent his sons Tony and Dante over to Miu and the Schuman group because he worried "the old guy" was going to get hurt.

miu-trial-miu-sitting-in-the-river.jpg

Nelson said Carlson's group was swayed by the Schuman group's claims that Miu was a "predator" looking for "little girls," and Miu was then soon surrounded.

"They got a crowd. They told lies to make the crowd angry," Nelson said. "Nick Miu standing in the river with 13 strangers. Thirteen drunk, angry strangers. Thirteen against one. They yelled and they screamed in order to attract a crowd."

Nelson said there were inconsistencies between the parties involved in their respective interviews over whether Miu punched, slapped or pushed a member of Carlson's party named Madison, which led to Miu being knocked into the river by Dante Carlson.

miu-trial-miu-walks-away-as-aj-martin-collapses-into-river.jpg

"When he tries to get up out of the water, they attack him in the front, smack him across the front of the face while somebody comes from behind and starts pushing him down. And that moment he feared for his life and he responded with self-defense," Nelson said.

He said Miu then began to make "quick, short jab motions" with his knife towards the mob.

"When people attacked Miu, he responded," Nelson said.

miu-trial-defense-image-of-schuman-allegedly-strangling-miu.jpg

Nelson then showed three images of what appeared to be Schuman strangling Miu, which he said caused Miu to fall backward and fatally stab Schuman by accident.

"I'm sure (Schuman) was a wonderful man, wonderful human being. We're going to hear a lot about him, but in this moment, on this day, on that river, when he was drunk, he tried to strangle Nick Miu," Nelson said.

Nelson said after the stabbings, Miu tossed the knife because he was "suffering from shock and trauma."

The first witness

Ryan Nelson was the first witness called by the prosecution.

Nelson said he was positive that Miu started the fight when he hit Madison.

"It looked like he struck her definitively with his right hand," Nelson said.

During an intense cross-examination, defense attorneys challenged Nelson's memory of events.

The trial continues on Tuesday at St. Croix County Courthouse in Hudson, Wisconsin.

MOSCOW WIDENS NEW POLICY LINE; Essay, Scored During Rule of Khrushchev, Praised for View of Hard Rural Life

MOSCOW WIDENS NEW POLICY LINE; Essay, Scored During Rule of Khrushchev, Praised for View of Hard Rural Life

MOSCOW, Dec. 26—A growing reversal of the policies of former Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev, especially in agriculture, was‐extended today to the field of literary criticism.

The literary‐union newspaper Literaturnaya Gazeta published a laudatory review of Yefim Dorosh's essay “Half Rain, Half Sunshine,” which gives what is widely regarded as a realistic depiction of the countryside of central European Russia.

The essay, published last summer in the liberal literary monthly Novy Mir, was violently attacked in the Soviet press just before Mr. Khrushchev's overthrow in October as misrepresenting life in rural areas.

One critique, by L. Lebedev, a collective farm chairman from the Galich area northeast of Moscow, appeared in Selskaya Zhizn (Rural Life), the farm newspaper of the Communist party's Central Committee over whose content Mr. Khrushchev had direct control.

Mr. Lebedev charged Mr. Dorosh with conveying a picture of “prerevolutionary dreariness, despondency, stagnation, and complete hopelessness drifting from every page.”

The farm chairman accused the author of concentrating attention “on an old monastery, an ancient lake, an abandoned grave of some count instead of writing, say, about the new widescreen moviehouse.”

Mr. Lebedev said Mr. Dorosh had misrepresented the cultural level of farm youth and the rural intelligentsia by depicting them as “primitive, uneducated people without interest in literature or the arts.”

Mr. Dorosh had written that the residents of his fictitious country town of Raigorod “read little, went, to be sure, to the movies, but had not been in the regional museum, in the picture gallery, in the theater or at the philharmonic concert.”

Today's review in Literaturnaya Gazeta by Vladimir Voronov, a critic, contended that Mr. Dorosh had performed a useful service by drawing attention to problems that continued to bedevil Soviet agriculture and life in the countryside.

The essay, published while Mr. Khrushchev was still in power, questioned the effectiveness of some reforms inspired by the former Premier and criticized the continuing close supervision of farm production and the imposition of output plans from above.

In an evident allusion to Mr. Khrushchev's style of running Soviet agriculture, Mr. Voronov wrote:

“Dorosh regards the struggle for a growth of the rural economy not as a short‐lived, noisy campaign but as a long, complicated haul.”

Mr. Voronov assailed the farm chairman for having judged the essay simply on the basis that his own area was more prosperous than the one pictured in “Half Rain, Half Sunshine.”

The reviewer said it was not literary criticism to say:

“We live better” and to tell “about a milkmaid who had obtained 800 quarts of milk more from a cow than in the previous year.”

The controversial essay is part of a series of “rural diaries” that Mr. Dorosh, a resident of Moscow, has been writing since 1956 on the basis of periodic visits to an unidentified small town and the surrounding countryside in central Russia.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
