My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. We live in a society that values youth and warehouses its oldsters in “long-term care” facilities. Out of sight, out of mind. Grandparents, naturally, fall into this group. Consequently, there is little research being conducted on the significant role grandparents can play in the lives of their grandchildren.

Grandparents whose grandchildren live with them play an essential role as primary caregivers. That is pretty straightforward. But even grandparents whose grandchildren do not reside with them can relieve the mother by babysitting regularly.

They can also be a source of parenting tips for their sons or daughters who may struggle with caring for a newborn. By trial and error, grandparents have learned natural remedies for the common problems babies experience, such as diarrhea, constipation, colic, fussiness, and the like.

Not all mothers can always be with their newborn and young infant during the first two crucial years. Sometimes a mother or father must leave their child for lengthy periods of time. This can be devastating for an infant who feels abandoned no matter how often you try to explain that mommy will be back in a week.

Another way a baby may not receive full attention from his mother is if she suffers from post-partum depression or addictions.

Most regrettably, there are also women who, for many reasons, did not want to become pregnant and have a child. When the unwanted child is born, she might not be welcome. She is lucky to have her basic needs met but, otherwise, will likely receive little loving care from her mother. There will be a marked deficit in bonding and attachment with subsequent harmful consequences for the child’s physical and mental development.

These are just some life situations in which grandparents can be of invaluable help to their grandson or daughter.

A few years ago, I received the following letter:

My husband and I went to my grandmother's grave for the first time, for she died while we were in British Columbia some years ago. While we were looking for her grave, I heard in my mind a "lullaby"—I've heard bits of this song in my mind all my life, without ever knowing what it is—but it came on very strongly while I was searching for her grave.

When I found her grave, I didn't want my husband near—and I felt embarrassed for feeling that way about him being there, for he had helped me find her grave all that morning. But it felt like I wanted to be alone with her, to plug into that special feeling we had shared together once again.

I knew "she" wasn't in that grave at all—but I still felt these things towards her, and that song was so strong there in my mind. I don't know what that "lullaby" means. It is very gentle music, very light and beautiful, and it just filled that graveyard that day.

Until I met my husband, she was the only person I saw who loved me, from her eyes!

What a beautiful way to speak of bonding and attachment. Bonding is usually understood to refer to a mother’s, father’s, or any other person’s emotional relationship with their child, preferably from conception, but clearly, after birth.

Attachment is the same loving feeling by the child for her mother and others who have shown interest and kindness to the child. A caregiver who is reliably available and responsive to a baby's needs forms the basis for secure attachment, competence in exploring the environment , forming relationships, and developing self-esteem .

Attachment to a grandparent will gradually develop as a result of regularly being hugged, stroked, spoken to in soothing tones, listening to lullabies, and receiving love from the grandparent’s eyes.

Grandparents provide grandchildren a conduit to a family’s past, accomplishments, trials, and tribulations. It is important for children to know their roots and their cultural heritage. Parents are often too busy to talk about such things. Many times, they have forgotten such historical data or want to forget them because they are ashamed of them.

Scientific studies and anecdotal evidence show what most of us experienced but hardly ever put in words: that typically maternal grandparents are closer to grandchildren than paternal grandparents. Why should that be so? Several factors seem to be responsible.

For one, mothers are generally closer to their mothers than to their mothers-in-law. For that reason, they will often have their mothers present at the birth and to help with the baby once they are home. Thus, a preference has been established from the beginning, which endures.

Having your own daughter going through nine months of pregnancy and giving birth feels very different from having your son become a father, essentially getting a free ride.

Also, many psychologists have remarked on the observation that the relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law is complicated by the fact that many mothers do not approve of the woman their son has married for a variety of reasons such as race, religion, education , social class, age, etc. Mothers want the very best for their children, and the person they marry often does not meet the expectations of the future mother-in-law.

Whether a grandparent lives close by or a distance away will make a difference in how often they can visit and establish a meaningful relationship with their grandchild. Because of the mother’s closeness to her daughter, maternal grandparents tend to live nearer to her than paternal grandparents.

In one study of UK teenagers , the maternal grandmother was the most important family member besides their immediate family. The maternal grandfather was next.

Of course, the attitude of the grandparent will determine the quality of their relationship with their grandchild. Grandparents who want to be involved in the lives of their grandchildren and manage to be respectful of parental roles have the highest likelihood of success. And this is true for both branches of the nuclear family.

Your essay should first and foremost be about you.

Make sure your grandma doesn’t take over your college essay. An anecdote about an experience or conversation you had with a grandparent can be a great way to illustrate something about your background or values, but your essay should always feature you as the main character. If you need help coming up with a specific story, go mining for mementos like photos and birthday cards. Or better yet, have a conversation if you can! Whether it’s a phone call, an afterschool visit, or a letter of everything you would want to say to a grandparent who has passed away, speaking directly to that person will help you uncover cherished memories that you both participated in. The more specific and detailed your story, the easier it will be to tell it from your perspective. After all, your granny doesn’t need to get accepted to college – and she is probably too old for ramen dinners night after night anyway.

Write about their impact on you…

Once you have homed in on a memory or experience, think about what you learned from it. What does it say about you? Does/did knowing your grandparent make you more understanding? Kind? Curious? Empathetic? What kind of attributes does grandma bring out in you and how does she do that? Finally, you have to show, not tell. Remember that conversation we mentioned earlier? Here’s where your notes, photos, and scrapbooks will come in handy. Concrete details and bits of dialogue are the final key ingredient to any college essay — but especially the kind built around a relationship. Don’t just say that your grandparent makes you more adventurous – tell admissions about the time you risked all of your team’s points in Jeopardy because you were confident in your answer and remembered your grandpa telling you that you have to take great risks to see great rewards. Show admissions how you’ve applied what your grandparent taught you to your everyday life.  

If your essay reads as a eulogy to your grandparent, think about how you can turn the essay around. One way to do this would be to try to only include your grandparent in the first and last paragraph of your essay: introduce your relationship and its’ impact, tell your own story, and bring that story full circle back to your grandparent. Human ages during his lifetime. His connections also change during this time. From a son he becomes a father and finally a grandfather. This process of ageing is very interesting and also teaches us many things in the long run.

Thus old age is sometimes called second childhood. It is the time when a person reaches the age of sixty and beyond that. Hair starts whitening and muscles shrink but the brain gets richer and richer. They are the most powerful and influential people in the household. They have seen the world and lived through it.

They have earned respect. That is the reason why all the members of the family respect them so much. What we are now is because of them.

To a child his/ her grandparents form a whole new world, a whole new space. A child finds that comfort in his grandparents that he does not get in his parents. Bedtime stories care, free sweets, warm woolens knitted at home are the few things every granny and granddad gifts their grandchildren.

I have very sweet memories of my grandparents. He was a second guardian to me. They were the people I ran to whenever i had a thought traumatizing me. And whenever I did so they were always there to take me in, in their warm cozy hug and save me from all dangers and fear.

There were times when my grandparents used to save me from getting scolding from my parents as well. My grandparents do not look as older as other people of the same age. My grandmother is sixty five and my grandfather is seventy years of age. The reason behind their youthful face is that still they try out new means and methods to keep themselves fit. Yes, they are very diet conscious.

This continues till 10 a.m. there is an unspoken rule at this time that nobody should disturb him till this time unless it’s very urgent or hell gets a snubbing.

My grandmother on the other hand follows an entirely different routine on the whole. She keeps up till late night with her knitting work. She has this hobby which has now reached a level of frenzy after she won a competition on knitting.

She used to make woolens, mufflers, gloves, tablecloths, caps socks just anything you can probably name of by hand by knitting. Recently she took part in a competition and this show cased her versatile talent. After winning it she has taken up this hobby more seriously and she is working with double determination and double hard work day and night.

So after staying up late night she sleeps and gets up later than grand dad…something like 9 am in the morning. Freshens herself and sits with the knitting items where she left off last night. Sometimes if she is bored of knitting she switches on the television or goes to the terrace for a short morning walk. But grandmother has the habit of storing pickles in glass jars and putting them out in the terrace for drying.

That place was a heaven for me. She made pickles of all sorts, mango, chilly, dates, tamarind and many more. I was my grandmother’s ‘dish tasteter’ and she was my personal ‘chef’.  Granny had a fetish to watch different cooking channels, note down the recipes and make them later on. And who used to taste her dishes and judge whether it’s good or bad? No one else, other than me.

On the other hand the time i spent with my grandfather was a bit different. He taught me many things. He used to tell me stories of armies (my grandfather is an ex army personnel), battles, fights, different countries and all that. We talked about religions, mythological beliefs, gods, mysteries. I transcended into a whole new and different world whenever he told me his stories.

Not only this, I and my grandfather spent hours gardening. I used to see how he dug up the ground to make a bed, how he sowed the seeds and how he watered them. It was such a beauty to watch the plants that grew up within a few days. He encouraged me in sports as well. It was him who bought me my first bicycle and taught me to ride. I am thankful to him for that.

My grandparents made my childhood complete. They are the ones who filled colours in it, gave me basic knowledge and important teachings of life. I simply can’t imagine where I would have been if they hadnt been there.

Nowadays we have seen cases where the old people get treated very badly, by their own family members and sometimes by their own children.

This is such a tragic incident. Some people even leave their old mother and father in old age homes to avoid all responsibilities. The old parents spend their last few remaining days in the  four walls of the old age home….always looking towards the door, waiting for their beloved child to show up and take them back home.

But who will take them back home when their beloved child whom they have nurtured with so much love, time, effort and money has usurped all their property and left them on street? People actually usurp their parents’ property and leave then\m on streets.

How can someone do such treatment with someone who has given birth to them? It is rightly said, human race has lost its humanity.

"Grandparents’ Roles Are More Diverse Than Ever Before" — Experts Are Sharing How An Aging Population Could Impact Families

"This country has no comprehensive long-term care system, particularly for older adults."

Kathy L. is a 46-year-old mother of three in North Carolina. Five years ago, she moved her family back to her hometown in order to help care for her aging parents, but for the past year and a half, the family has devoted significant time and resources to caring for her husband’s aunt, who has dementia. Her children were ages 15, 11 and 9 when the aunt came to live with them last summer. 

Initially, the plan was to care for the aunt at their home for 12 weeks, at which point her long-term care insurance would kick in to cover the cost of an assisted living facility. But after 8 weeks, the family decided to pay out of pocket to move her into one.

“Our family hit a breaking point,” Kathy L. told HuffPost. 

“Dementia patients can often get aggressive because they are confused/scared and don’t know what’s going on,” she explained. While her two older sons were able to handle the aunt’s outbursts, her youngest child struggled. Kathy L. said her 9-year-old daughter was “crying every day and was terrified to say or do anything that would set her off.”

In addition, her husband was granted power of attorney for his aunt, taking care of her finances and clearing out and selling her home. 

In spite of these challenges, Kathy L. says the experience of providing this care wasn’t all negative. “I also feel very honored to be able to help,” she said. “There are a lot of layers of feelings involved.”

People like Kathy L. who find themselves in the dual — and at times competing — roles of providing child care and elder care simultaneously are sometimes referred to as the “sandwich generation.”

With an aging population and a declining fertility rate globally, more and more families are likely to find themselves in this situation.  

A research group at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock, Germany, headed by Diego Alburez-Gutierrez, recently published a  paper  entitled “Projections of Human Kinship for All Countries.” Using data from the UN World Population Prospects 2022  report (the most recent year available), researchers were able to make probabilistic predictions of what the families of the future will look like.

One important finding is that family networks — measured by the number of biological relatives a person has — are going to get smaller. (While the researchers understand that family can mean much more than the people who are biologically related to you, for the purposes of this research, they did not include other kinship relations such as spouses, in-laws, adopted children or LGBTQ family structures.) 

People are going to have fewer living relatives, on average. “At every age, we see that as we move into the future, families will become smaller,” Alburez-Gutierrez told HuffPost. 

For example, a 65-year-old woman in 1965 could be expected to have 41 living relatives, while a 65-year-old woman living in 2095 is projected to have only 25. The drivers of this change are delayed childbearing and declining fertility rates. Some countries have already seen their birthrates decline, while others may experience this in the years to come. 

Another trend shaping demographics, the researchers found, is that families are becoming “more vertical,” Alburrez-Gutierrez said. “That means that you’re going to have fewer lateral kin — siblings, your cousins — and because people are living longer, it means that you will have more genealogical generations at the same time.”

In other words, you will probably have fewer siblings and cousins, but you’re more likely to get to meet your great-grandparents.

One finding that Alburez-Gutierrez found striking, he said, was that “the probability that a newborn baby will have a living grandparent, let’s say in countries of the Global North, it will be 100% in the coming years.”

Also, “in Europe, it will be increasingly common [for a baby] to have up to six living great-grandparents when they are born.” 

The researchers also found increasing age gaps between generations in families, leading to people becoming grandparents (and great-grandparents) at later ages. For example, if you have a child when you’re 20 and that child has a child when they’re 20, you become a grandparent at age 40. But if you have a child at age 40, and then your child has a child at age 40, you won’t become a grandparent until you’re 80. Increasing life expectancies mean that you’re more likely to be around to see the birth of grandchildren — and great-grandchildren — but these increasing age gaps mean that you’re more likely to be frail or disabled when you do meet them.

There are advantages and disadvantages to these population changes.

A big advantage of increasing longevity is that we are more likely able to meet, spend time with and build relationships both with our grandparents and even great-grandparents. 

Ellen Carbonell , a professor of social work at Rush University, explained that the roles of grandparents in the U.S. have changed over time.

“Today, grandparents’ roles are more diverse than ever before,” Carbonell told HuffPost. In addition to their “traditional roles as family historian, and provider of love, support and wisdom,” Carbonell explained, grandparents are more likely to function as childcare providers.

“No longer simply ‘babysitting’ grandchildren to give parents some free time, many grandparents are providing childcare for grandchildren on a regular basis,” Carbonell said.

Since grandparents are older, on average, when their grandchildren are born, they are also more likely to be retired. 

“There can be a greater ease and enjoyment of the role without the competing tasks that come with employment. This greater flexibility can be seen in grandparents who relocate to be closer to their out-of-state children and grandchildren so they can be more involved in their day-to-day lives,” Carbonell said. 

These advantages assume good health, which isn’t a guarantee and becomes less likely the older a grandparent gets. Older grandparents also may lack financial stability. 

“Many have been unemployed or underemployed for years, or have contributed financially to the care of others, leaving them particularly strapped financially during their grandparenting years,” Carbonell said. 

When a grandparent needs financial support or caregiving, the burden may fall to family members who are also caring for children, creating the “sandwich” dynamic. 

These dynamics can both be at play at the same time within one family. Kathy L., for example, was able to turn to her mother for help with childcare at the same time that she was serving as a caregiver for her own father and her husband’s aunt. The layers of her situation were both emotional and logistical. 

With so many generations living at the same time, there are increasing instances of what Alburez-Gutierrez called the “grand-sandwich” and Carbonell called the “club sandwich” of one generation caring for parents, children and grandchildren. Such a load can take a heavy “physical, emotional and financial toll,” Carbonell said. Increased longevity, in other words, can make for more caregivers but also more caregiving responsibilities.

“The increased availability in the sense of grandparents and great-grandparents in the future, which we think is going to happen, doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be more sources of informal care within families,” Alburez-Gutierrez said. “Actually it may be the other way around. We’ll place more of a burden on the current generation.”

Grand- or club-sandwich caregivers, Carbonell explained, may put their own needs last and delay preventative health care. The sandwiching also creates an unstable network that is likely to collapse if an emergency arises. 

“With no built-in backup for care provision,” Carbonell continued, “we can see how the fragility of a tightly stretched care system can be pushed beyond its ability to cover care needs.” 

The ramifications of these demographic changes extended beyond individual families. 

With fewer living relatives within each generation, the caregiving duties will fall to a smaller number of people, increasing their responsibilities. It will also mean that more families look to public and private institutions to provide care for the members of their family who need it. 

“One challenge will be that even in countries that have taken into account the aging of the population, and introduced measures to try to address that in terms of restructuring pension schemes or changing the retirement age, is they have still assumed that there was going to be this constant pool of informal support” to provide care, Alburez-Gutierrez said.

If a shrinking, aging population means that we have to outsource more of this labor, and pay for it, it will require a huge financial investment.

Carbonell pointed out that caregiving, whether for children or elders, often falls to women. When they take time out of the workforce to care for family members, they lose both seniority and years of accumulated pension or social security contributions. 

Paid caregivers also tend to be women, many of them immigrants, and the pay for such work is often low, leading to a high turnover rate. 

As it stands, the system is fragile, and the combination of increased longevity and declining birthrates continue to add stress.

“This country has no comprehensive long-term care system, particularly for older adults. It is crucial that this issue be explored and dealt with promptly, as an increasingly aging population will be needing care for which there is currently no plan,” Carbonell said. 

While these are serious concerns, a “sandwich” situation in which your children witness you caring for elderly family members can also be a source of meaning and insight.

“As hard as it was this past summer, I think our kids saw what it looks like to take care of family,” Kathy L. said.

“Our 15-year-old saw us cleaning up after our aunt one time ... and said, ‘Wow, I can’t wait ‘til it’s my turn to do this for you guys.’ And I was struck with two competing feelings: One, I hope you never have to do this for me, and two, I’m so thankful that you automatically expect that’s what you’ll do.” This article originally appeared on HuffPost.

5 things to keep in mind when you hear about Gen Z, Millennials, Boomers and other generations

Generation Z. Millennials. Baby Boomers. It’s hard not to run into eye-catching headlines about generations these days. And it’s easy to feel like many of these headlines are just clickbait, all fluff and no substance. But is that really the case?

At Pew Research Center, we think it can be useful to talk about generations. But there are some important considerations for readers to keep in mind whenever they come across a news story or research about generations:

Generational categories are not scientifically defined. The boundaries that place one person in Gen Z and another in the Millennial generation are not precise, definitive or universally agreed on. Even the names of generations are not uniformly adopted: Is it Millennials or Generation Y ? Gen Z or iGen ?

People born near the boundaries of these generational groupings can feel particularly uncomfortable being lumped in with those much older or younger than them, and for good reason. The media and researchers – Pew Research Center included – have not always been as clear as we should that generational boundaries are not a hard science.

Generational labels can lead to stereotypes and oversimplification. All Millennials or Baby Boomers are not the same, just as all Southerners, all Catholics or all Black Americans are not the same. Shared experiences and identities should be recognized – and at their best can even be empowering – but this shouldn’t come at the expense of individuality.

Discussions about generation often focus on differences instead of similarities. Conflict tends to get more attention than consensus. So watch out for news stories or research articles that assume or exaggerate intergenerational divides that may actually be quite small. “ OK Boomer ” became a cultural meme, but it probably overstates the divide between younger and older generations. After all, most of us have some combination of parents, grandparents, kids and grandkids we love, making our family lives interconnected.

Conventional views of generations can carry an upper-class bias. Popular history recalls that Baby Boomers in the 1960s and ’70s were deeply opposed to the Vietnam War. This notion is based on attention-grabbing protests on college campuses and at political events. But many high-quality surveys at the time showed that younger Americans – most of whom were not attending college – were more supportive of the war than older generations who had lived through previous conflicts. Readers today should similarly question whether stereotypes of Gen Z might be skewed toward the experiences of the upper middle class.

People change over time. It’s worth pausing when you hear someone say that “kids today” are so different from their predecessors. Young adults have always faced a different environment than their parents, and it’s common for their elders to express some degree of concern or alarm. (“Why is his hair dyed green?”)

Don’t assume that what you see today is what you’ll get tomorrow. People change as they grow older, pursue careers and form families. Gen Zers will no doubt walk differently in the world by 2050, just as today’s Baby Boomers are different from their younger selves. Generational signals can sometimes be lasting, but youth itself is not a permanent state.

So is it all just hype?

If you’ve read this far, your suspicions about generational labels may have hardened. That’s OK. Our recommendation is for readers to bring a healthy dose of skepticism to the generational discussions they see. Readers should also hold media and research organizations that focus on generations – including Pew Research Center – to a high standard.

Despite these cautions, we still believe generational thinking can help us understand how societies change over time. The eras in which we come of age can leave a signature of common experiences and perspectives. Events such as terrorist attacks, wars, recessions and pandemics can shape the opportunities and mindsets of those most affected by them.

Similarly, historical advances like desegregation, effective birth control, the invention of the internet and the arrival of artificial intelligence can fundamentally change how people live their lives, and the youngest generations are often in the vanguard. At the same time, some events can affect people across generations, moving everyone in one direction or another.

It’s wise to think of terms like Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X and Baby Boomer as general reference points instead of scientific facts. At Pew Research Center, we’ll continue to use these and other labels to help our readers navigate a changing world. But we’ll do so sparingly – and only when the data supports the use of the generational lens .

Pop-Pop, Bubbe and more: See the most popular grandparent names by state

A list of the most popular nicknames for grandparents across the United States has been released— and some of the findings might surprise you.

According to data pulled by Preply , a language tutoring company, Nana earned the top spot for grandma, while Grammy, Granny and Gran are tied for second place.

Papa reigned supreme in the grandpa category, followed by granddad, which is especially hot in the South.

A map provided by Preply shows the most favored nicknames by state. For example, In Iowa, Grand Mama is the most common nickname for grandma, while Oma is No. 1 in New Mexico. In Ohio, Indiana and Alabama, it's Mamaw. Abuela — Spanish for grandmother — wins Texas, Arizona, California and Florida.

Opa, a German term for grandfather, is the most popular nickname in Nebraska, while Dedushka, Russian for grandfather, ranks No. 1 in Massachusetts.

Preply also analyzed up-and-coming nicknames in the U.S. and found that Gigi, Mimi, Gran, Bibi and Momo are all on the rise. Trendy nicknames for grandpa include, Poppy, Pops, Papi, G-Pa, and Grandude. 

TODAY’s Al Roker goes by Pop-Pop , which is the popular nickname for grandpa in Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland and Vermont. 

Al became a first-time grandpa in July 2023, when his daughter Courteney gave birth to Sky Clara.

Kathie Lee Gifford’s nickname — Bubbe — is No. 1 in New Jersey. Bubbe, sometimes spelled bubbie, is the Yiddish word for grandma.

In 2022, the former TODAY co-host explained that she got the Bubbe idea from an Israeli friend.

“I asked her, I said what’s a good wood for a Jewish grandmother?” Kathie Lee recalled on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna. “And she goes, ‘Bubbalah. It’s Bubbe . And it means dearest one, like cherished one.”

Preply also studied relationships and found that 49% of those surveyed said they would confide in their grandparents over their parents.

I was happy in the UK and dead against moving to New York. When my partner was made redundant, it felt like our only option.

Two years ago, my partner and I were still living in a one-and-a-half-bedroom basement in London . The lack of space left guests having to tiptoe between a cot and a piano to find a bed in an underground coal hole. Our son, then aged one, had been born after several years of IVF. After having spent so long in the dark, we were all ready to move somewhere bright, clean, and green.

But this was 2022, and the economy was hitting the skids. Several months after our offer had been accepted, my partner was made redundant. His boss told him about a job opportunity across the pond.

"We can't move to New York . We can't do it to the grandparents — and we've just found our dream house," I told him. But for him, the writing was already on the wall. We held on until our mortgage deal expired and then reluctantly let the house go.

Leaving London for New York felt like the only option

After that, I had to admit, grudgingly, that going to New York seemed like the best option. I had been at my job in a magazine for nearly 10 years and was ready for a change. We wanted to create something new with a big move, so why not just go a bit further west than we'd intended?

I'd never been Stateside, so we took a reconnaissance trip, mixing opera and jazz with checking out neighborhoods and nurseries. When we got back, there was no longer any decision to make.

We had a busy summer getting visas, renovating, and finally renting out our flat in London. I resigned from my job . We said goodbyes to the grandparents, with plans to visit soon.

We tried Craigslist. "Peter" had an amazing array of affordable apartments in New Jersey, but I don't think, after being asked for cash to secure a viewing, any of them were actually his.

We eventually moved into a furnished brownstone in Brooklyn with a backyard. With its fireplaces and wooden floors, it was strangely similar to our old flat in London — and no one asked us for a guarantor. We signed a one-year lease.

I set about exploring our new neighborhood, finding a nice nursery school , and trying to get work done during my son's naps. Trying to buy decent fresh bread for under $10 a loaf became a new challenge.

We'd done some research but didn't think hard enough about the cost of living over here. While inflation has fallen, grocery prices have remained high — the recommended monthly food budget for a family of four in the US has risen 27% since 2020, according to the USDA . Then I lost some work I'd lined up before we came due to freelance budgets being cut.

After six months in the city, I understand the appeal

On the upside, one thing the Big Apple does really well is fun. By the time Christmas arrived, we were ready for some: Santa at Macy's, the Rockettes at Radio City, a Christmas fairyland at Dyker Heights, free boat trips. We've taken the metro up the Hudson and a train to Long Island. With an IDNYC card we have been able to visit big museums and zoos for free.

I've found that when you know what to look for in this crazy place, you can find amazing opportunities. I miss my a cappella group in London, but I've joined an exciting competitive barbershop chorus, a highlight of which involves singing nerdily in a pub. The rest of the family is also doing well: my son loves his nursery, and my partner is enjoying his first experience working abroad. Slowly, it feels like things are opening up for all of us.

This experience has jolted us out of a lot of comfort zones. Despite London having crime levels that surpass New York, homelessness is something I've encountered a lot more in my current day-to-day life. The poverty in New York City is reported to have increased in recent years, bringing the total number of New Yorkers living in poverty to 2 million, according to a report from Robin Hood , an anti-poverty philanthropy.

Yes, it can be uncomfortable. It's also funny, exciting, exhausting, and stimulating in equal measure. I'm grateful for how lucky my family is to be going on this adventure at this time in our lives.

I've suggested to my partner that we stay until at least Christmas, as it feels like we've just got our keys to the city. At some point next year, we will go back to the UK and settle down, but in the meantime, I have gained both a (secondhand) breadmaker and the gift of perspective.

No, Your Spaghetti Doesn’t Have to Be al Dente: 5 Pasta Myths, Debunked

A veteran food journalist settles some long-simmering disputes on a slippery subject.

After publishing an article debunking five commonly held kitchen myths last week, I got questions — and a surprising number of pleas — about pasta. I was asked to settle long-simmering disputes between grandparents and grandchildren, roommates, and husbands and wives of 50-plus years.

The myths that generated the most conflict were oldies: that pasta should be rinsed after cooking (false: the starch helps gives pasta its special mouthfeel) and that you should always add olive oil to pasta cooking water (false: stirring is a better way to keep it from sticking, see below).

Truth or myth: Pasta should always be cooked al dente or firm to the tooth.

The source of this myth seems to be transcontinental confusion. The American way of serving fully cooked pasta with sauce dolloped on top is different from the Italian way of serving pasta and sauce combined. In Italian recipes, the pasta is cooked twice: first in boiling water, and then again with seasonings or sauce, so leaving it slightly undercooked — al dente — in the first stage makes sense. You can always add more sauce or cooking water to finish cooking the pasta, but you can’t go back if it’s overcooked.

But the tenderness of your pasta is really up to you; even in Italy, there’s room for personal preference. Some people like a little resistance, and some pasta shapes are nice with a little bit of chew (hello, bucatini). Others want pasta to give way immediately. Remember that pasta will always cook a little more after it’s drained, so stop before it gets so soft that it will fall apart by the time it gets to the table. And it’s always a good idea to cook pasta to al dente when you’re going to bake it in a casserole.

Verdict: False. Cook to your preference.

Truth or myth: pasta needs to cook at a rolling boil the entire time..

In 2009, Harold McGee, a cooking scientist and Times columnist, enlisted the queens of Italian American cooking, Marcella Hazan and Lidia Bastianich, to test the tradition of keeping pasta at a boil. Since then, many experts have reproduced their results: It doesn’t make much difference whether the water is simmering or boiling. Dried pasta will cook through at any temperature from 180 degrees to 212 degrees. (Fresh pasta, especially stuffed ones like wontons and tortellini, should be cooked only at a simmer; the tumult of boiling can burst them open.)

What does make a difference is stirring. At the lower temperature, pasta has to be stirred at least every minute or so to distribute the sticky starch particles, which prevents clumping. Because a rolling boil moves the pasta in the pot, it does the stirring for you.

If you don’t mind paying constant attention to your pasta while it’s cooking, you can cook it at a lower temperature. But if you like to add it, stir it and then leave it alone until the timer goes off, keep it at the boil.

Verdict: Myth.

Truth or myth: you should wait until the pasta water has reached a boil to add the salt..

This myth seems to date from a time when cooking pots were made of tin, aluminum and other metals easily corroded or pitted by salt. The idea was that adding salt to cold water could cause damage, because the undissolved salt sits on the bottom. But the amount of salt in pasta water — 1 heaping tablespoon per gallon — isn’t nearly enough to damage today’s pots and pans. That said, it’s a good idea not to let the salty pasta water cool in the pot after the cooking; the sooner you dump it out and rinse the pot, the easier it is to clean off the inevitable cloudy salt deposits.

Verdict: Myth. Add the salt any time you like.

Truth or myth: salting pasta water makes the noodles cook faster..

It’s true that salt raises the boiling point of water, but not in a way that matters for pasta purposes. If you added enough salt to actually speed up the cooking, your pasta would be inedible.

Truth or myth: Pasta cooking water should taste as salty as the ocean.

In my earlier article , I cooked eight batches of spaghetti at varying salt levels, ranging from none to Pacific Ocean to Mediterranean Sea (3 to 4 percent, or about half a cup of salt per gallon.) It turns out: Seawater is too salty.

As I worked my way up from a teaspoon to a tablespoon of kosher salt per gallon, the pasta was noticeably undersalted, and its flavor got lost in the finished dish. I most liked water that tasted as salty as a light chicken stock, or two tablespoons per gallon of water. ( Here’s the piece in question, with an even more in-depth exploration .)

Verdict: Myth. Salt to taste.
