Right now in this world, the top trending professions are Doctor, Teacher, Programmer, Designer, Architect, Marketer, Supervisor, Manager, Engineer, etc. Maybe you have something unique in you and you want to pursue that. So different people adopt different aims according to their inclinations, tastes or perceptions about life. My teachers are really helpful and are always guiding and helping me with my future plans.

They have always inspired me to do better and work harder. I was once explaining some doubts to my classmates and I realized that I really like explaining and teaching. Later, I experienced teaching while doing an internship with an NGO. I went to a slum and taught kids there. I felt a different kind of satisfaction after teaching them. At that time I realized that I had never felt happier than this and decided to become a professor. I am one who enjoys exploring new places and getting to know new cultures, languages, and cuisines, and working as a professor offers many chances for me to develop those interests. After my English Honours degree, I will prepare for the Master’s degree. Then I am planning to take the UGC NET exam . Another big plus is the working hours that academia can offer, which are frequently more flexible than in other professions.

The biggest advantage of being a professor is that I find jobs in many places worldwide. I am really honest and passionate about my aim in life. It is surely a long journey but I will try my best to reach my goal and I suggest everyone do the same. According to me, timely execution of an action plan with a proactive attitude is the key to success. One of the best ways to stay motivated is by visualizing the change and likewise by achieving step-by-step milestones.

My aim in life is to grow to be a doctor in the future. I believe that medicine is one of the noblest professions to pursue in the world. I belong to a family of doctors and just like my mother, I aspire to be a neurosurgeon. The study of neurology and its impact on our behaviour, personality, and character is what intrigues me the most about the field. My curiosity towards the medical world and ambition to be a doctor is what motivates me to study harder and more diligently. The study of medicine is not easy but it opens up a whole new world of interaction. Learning about basic cell function to discovering the mechanisms of our brain is a fascinating journey. As a school student, I wish to excel in certain subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, maths, and psychology so that I can pursue my dream of becoming a doctor and a neurosurgeon. I hope to participate in different charities, health clinics, and services to gain the relevant skills one needs to be a doctor. I wish to work upon my social and communication skills because good communication is the backbone of every industry. I have the confidence and hope that one day I will achieve my aim in life to become a doctor.

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instil a love of learning.” Teachers are the foundation of a good society, they not only facilitate learning but also inspire children to follow their dreams and goals in life. This is why my aim in life is to become a teacher. My teachers have had a tremendous impact on my life, they taught me to believe in myself and follow my path no matter what. I wish to inculcate this belief and nurture it. Becoming a teacher can help me spread this knowledge and belief of believing in one’s ability to achieve their goals, to be individualistic and creative. I believe that I can be a good teacher because of my experience, humility, and caring nature. I possess all the skills and qualities that a promising teacher should possess. I hope one day I get the opportunity to follow my passion for teaching and educating the world in the future.

My aim in life is to become an engineer. Belonging to a family of engineers I have aspired to become a mechanical engineer like my father. Efforts anyone puts in becoming an engineer will be the best investment ever. I will face many challenges at work but it will open an array of opportunities for me around the world. My curiosity towards the engineering world and ambition to be an engineer is what drives me to study harder and more diligently. I have started to prepare myself for this journey from the school level. Engineering is all about creating new products and bringing up changes in the existing ones for better functioning. How to Choose the Right Aim for You?

Generally, a person chooses their ambition or goal by getting inspired by the people surrounding them. Parents or teachers or relatives play a very crucial role in selecting an aim. Choosing the right goal as per your aptitude will help you to drive your life towards the right path. But one small mistake or choosing a wrong goal can shatter that. Hence everyone must be cautious while making this decision.

Your aim defines your career path. So, it could be really difficult to choose a career path at a very young age, it could be possible that a person fails to reach his goal after a certain point in time. But fixing the mistake and taking the right decision at that moment will show you light in the right direction. Therefore, do not give up hope and keep trying. And, be ambitious.

How to Achieve That?

The first and foremost task is you have to be very careful while making the decision. An aim leads towards the right career. So, here are a few steps that you must remember in every phase of your life.

Always be Proactive

Maintain a healthy and balanced life

Embrace your failures

Get expert opinions

Visualize your final destination

Track your progress

Stay focused

Every person decides at some point what he wants to become. And, in this era of modernization, I am aiming to become a doctor. Not just because my mom is a doctor but also it is a noble profession.

Many people aspire to become an engineer, architects, dancers, interior designers etc. Amid all the other professions, there are some particular reasons behind my preference for becoming a doctor.

A doctor is a person who saves others’ lives by treating them well. He helps people in curing all the diseases by giving them the required medicine or through surgery or various other procedures. Not only curing people by treatment but also a doctor must offer hope and joy to the patient and his family in times of difficulty.

No One would be able to survive in this world if there was no doctor. Nothing could be greater than saving someone’s life and spreading joy in the world.

However, it is not easy to become a doctor. I have to overcome a lot of hurdles to gain success. First I have to study hard and then I have to clear the medical entrance examination to secure a seat in a medical college first and then complete the programme to reach my goal.

I want to be a doctor because I want to help those who cannot afford the cost of treatment of many difficult diseases. I have a goal of opening a hospital of my own that will be equipped with all the modern medical instruments. And those who require treatment but can’t afford the cost of it will be able to get treated in my hospital. I idolize Dr Devi Shetty, the well known cardiac surgeon. Hence I have decided to embark on this journey.

It is a long journey. But I am quite ambitious and I will put in a lot of hard work to fulfill my goal.

Characteristics of a Good Essay

It must be concise: Essays must always be concise. It does not mean that the essay is supposed to be the short one, but it must be of the length required to convey the idea, no more no less. In this instance, the idea of Aim in the life of the student.

It must be clear: Essays are supposed to be clear; it means the main argument or the central idea of the essay must be clear and not vague, and the same goes for each of the sentences of the essay.

For example, in the topic, My Aim in Life, if the student is writing, My aim in life is to become a doctor, then the next sentence must be something that adds meaning to it, such as because I like to help the people, and not something irrelevant, such as, I like singing.

It is very important to be successful in your life. Hence, fixing a goal and staying focused is crucial in your life. So, making a proper plan from a young age and timely execution along with the right attitude are the ultimate keys to success.

I dream of opening a hospital of my own, complete with the most cutting-edge technology. And those who need medical attention but are unable to pay for it will be able to receive it in my facility. I've decided to travel as a result. It's a protracted voyage. But because I'm so ambitious, I'll work extremely hard to achieve my goal.

From a small age I was fascinated with biology. And that is what has forced me to pursue a medical career. As a result I took biology in my class 12th, and started preparing for MBBS. For that, I need to crack the NEET exam , which is not easy at all. I have to study consistently every day to complete the syllabus and have enough time for a good revision.

Every day I have to maintain a proper timetable which I can follow to be more productive. My physics is a bit weak, so I am focusing on it more and will try to make it strong. AIIMS Delhi is my dream college. Thus I need an excellent rank to get into the college.

The preparation is very challenging and not easy. Maintaining the same consistency is difficult and requires extreme dedication and hard work. I am willing to give that and achieve my dream of being a doctor.

Parents and Friends Support

My parents have been the most supportive and helpful. They always motivate me to work hard and achieve my dreams. They also supported me by providing me with the best education and coaching they could afford, and I am genuinely thankful to them. Special thanks to my friends there with me and for helping me constantly with many things. Without their help, I couldn't achieve my aim.

Becoming a doctor is not easy. On the one hand, you must put in years of study, patience, and hard labour; on the other, you must be committed to serving the sick and the poor for the rest of your life. Despite the challenges, becoming a doctor is a charming and passionate job that is very respectful.

My Ambition Essay

My Ambition

The ambition of any person’s life usually depends on their choice and interests. I aspire to be a great dancer . I have always had the knack for dancing from an early age. My parents always encouraged me to pursue my passion. Like most of the parents, they never discouraged me because it is not the most sought after career.

Subsequently, I wish to become a good dancer. I do not want the fame of being a dancer; rather I want the acclaim of being a good dancer. As my parents motivated me to pursue my dream, they enrolled me in dance classes. It helped me grow a lot as a dancer and also enhance my skills.

Most importantly, I wish to be a dance because I want to remove the stigma surrounding this career path. I want to set an example that you can do well in life if you’re not a doctor or engineer. Especially in India, where these two ambitions are considered the most valid.

I believe in the power of dance, and how it conveys the message without words. Dance is the language of the soul, and it makes me feel alive when I indulge in it.

I wish to dance so I could teach others to become experts in this field. Furthermore, I wish to help the underprivileged section who are interested in this ambition. I want to reach a height which enables me to offer them proper dance training free of cost so they can reach great heights.

Above all, I wish to be the wind beneath their wings. I want to create awareness about the importance of dance and how it benefits us physically as well. I hope I can achieve this ambition of mine someday. Till then, I won’t leave any stone unturned in reaching the finish line.

My Aim In Life Essay 150 Words

As a child, I always wanted to be a doctor. It has been my dream since I was a child. A person must know where they want to go in life, and what he hopes to become when he grows up. Once one knows what someone aspires to be, he can work hard to achieve it.

My parents are very happy with my decision and wish me all the success and hope that I will achieve my ambition. I am always concerned when my friends and family members are sick, and I feel like caring for them. My intention is to establish a clinic in my village once I receive my medical degree. There are no good doctors in the village. Due to the lack of medical facilities, a large number of people die there, and I would like to provide them with medical assistance.

It is not my intention to become a doctor just to make money. I will ensure that the poor should not be deprived of treatment because of a lack of money. I will treat my patients gently and considerately. With dedication, determination, and devotion, I am sure that I will succeed in fulfilling my ambition. I shall encourage people to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.

My Aim In Life Essay

My Aim In Life Essay 250 Words

Throughout my life, I have a dream of serving my motherland in a uniform. As a pilot, I wish to join the Indian Air Force or Navy, protecting my country from its enemies. The sound of an aircraft moving across the air makes my heart race. The sheer power of the aircraft can also be felt through the rumble over the ground. Flying in a fighter plane is my ultimate goal. The Balakot airstrike inspired me to become a naval pilot through Operational Trident during the war with Pakistan. A real hero is someone you earn, not the one you see in the movies or TV shows. To be a real hero, you have to earn a uniform that gives you real powers and not imaginary ones. In the end, I want to see myself in the uniform as soon as possible.

What made me choose to join the military as my life’s goal?

A sense of systematicity, organization, and discipline inspired me to join the forces. Rather than the mundane civilian life, it is the action involved in the military that draws me there. Having radio contacts in the services is beyond cool to me. The way they communicate is fascinating in its own way. It is always appealing to me to see the colors of the uniform, whether it be green, white, or blue. The authorization to kill an enemy is the cherry on top. Armed personnel are provided with advanced gear and machinery. Guns and weapons are included in this machinery.

My opinion is that life in the forces is far more satisfying and adventurous than civilian life. I also enjoy adventure sports like skydiving, river rafting, scuba diving, mountaineering, etc. In every step of the services, I have the opportunity to engage in action. I don’t want to take advantage of these privileges for the privileges that armed personnel enjoy, but I cannot ignore these benefits. For me, the vehicles are an important aspect. My first step would be to get one for myself.

My Aim In Life Essay

My Aim In Life Essay 500 Words

It is important to have an aim in life, because an aimless person is like a rudderless ship in the sea that has no idea where they are headed. As well, if we do not know where we should be in life, we will not know where to go. I have always wanted to be a professor, but my family is inspiring me to do the same. I have overcome many obstacles and setbacks from time to time. My parents are really supportive and respect my decision.

A lot of my friends wish to become professors, and some wish to become MBAs. There are so many aims and goals students can choose from in their life. Doctors, educators, programmers, designers, architects, marketers, supervisors, managers, engineers, and other top trending professions are the ones in the world right now. Maybe you have something unique in you and you are interested in pursuing it. Consequently, different people adopt different goals according to their inclination or taste or perception of life. I am grateful to my teachers for their guidance and assistance.

Once, I explained some doubts to my classmates and realized I enjoyed explaining and teaching. They have always inspired me to work harder and do better. Later, I had the opportunity to teach while doing an internship with an NGO. I taught kids in a slum. My experience gave me a different kind of satisfaction. As a result, I decided to become a professor because I had never felt happier than that.

Working as a professor gives me many opportunities to develop my interests in discovering new places and learning about new cultures, languages, and cuisines. Therefore, I am the one who enjoys exploring new places and getting to know new cultures, languages, and cuisines. Aside from my English Honours degree, I intend to pursue a Master’s degree. Following that, I intend to take the UGC NET exam. Academia has a number of advantages, including flexible working hours that are generally different from other professions.

Being a professor has the biggest advantage of finding jobs across the globe. The road to my goal is surely long, but I will try my best to accomplish it, and I recommend that everyone do the same. My greatest advantage is that I am honest and passionate about what I want out of life. By visualizing the change and achieving milestones along the way, I believe I can stay motivated to succeed. Executing an action plan in a timely manner with a proactive attitude is key to success.

Conclusion:

It is my personal goal that I would like to achieve in life. I am honest and passionate over the goal I have set for myself and I urge everyone to strive as hard as they can to achieve it.

My aim in life essay 17 Models

Last updated Friday , 15-03-2024 on 11:35 am

My aim in life essay – for students , it is an important topic for every student. We provide several templates of 100, 150, 200 – 500 words, to help students write My aim in life essay – for students .

Goals differ from one person to another, everyone has a goal that they seriously strive to achieve. Setting goals is the first step on the road to success. When you set your goal, it is easy to achieve it with minimal effort.

It is possible to achieve great goals when we work hard, and the use of the experiences of others helps us a lot in overcoming obstacles.

Life has no meaning without having valuable goals that we work to achieve. The goal is the end we want to reach. A conscious person is the one who realizes what he wants to do in his life, and what his future aspirations and dreams are. Topics suitable for the fifth and sixth grades of primary school, and the first, second, and third grades of middle school and high school.

My aim in life essay – for students

There is no doubt that every student has set his goal, which is to succeed with excellence in study, and to join the university he prefers to study at. Therefore, students choose at the secondary level the section that qualifies them for university study, and this is setting goals.

Some students prefer to study literary subjects, and their goal is to enroll in theoretical faculties, such as studying law, languages, history, and others. While others prefer to study scientific subjects in order to join practical colleges such as medicine, pharmacy and science. Some students prefer to study mathematics in order to enroll in the College of Engineering or the Institutes of Technology and others.

Thus, the student can direct his efforts to achieving the goal, and in My aim in life essay – for students , I will write a paragraph about the definition of the goal and the importance of defining our goals.

Aim definition

The aim is the end that you want to reach in the end. For example, if a person wants to be a doctor in the future, he must strive to achieve this goal by studying scientific subjects and excelling in his studies, achieving success in exams, joining medical school, and studying seriously. Thus, he can eventually achieve his goal and become a successful doctor in his work.

I like the saying: “ The ultimate goal of life is action, not knowledge. Science without action is nothing. We learn in order to act .” Thomas Huxley

It is noticeable that this person was able to define his goal and study the scientific materials that qualify him to join the Faculty of Medicine. Thus, it saves time and effort.

But when we do not define our goals, there is confusion and great effort in sub-things that are far from the goal. We may reach our aim in the end after tiring and passing a long time, or we may not reach our aim, and this is considered a major failure.

The importance of aim setting

Determining the goal is one of the most important success factors, because it helps us determine the right path that we must take. My goal in life is to become a person of value to society, a person whose abilities can be relied upon, and to become one of the effective personalities that help its society in building and progressing, and to have great energy and ability to develop, so that I can progress and excel continuously.

Undoubtedly, there are many people who do not have a goal or a destination that they seek to reach, and these I liken them to a ship that has no destination, which does not reach anywhere.

Unlike people with will and goals, they can achieve many things in their lives, and these achievements are very suitable for them. I will explain this in my aim in life essay.

For a long time, I had many ideas, such as what is the purpose of life, and other similar thoughts, but I was able to identify the problem that I do not have a specific goal until I have ambition to achieve it, so I should have known well what my goal is, and what is an effective personality of value in the society I want to be like.

Until I was able to reach that the doctor is one of the influential personalities, especially if he works in an important and sensitive specialty that helps others to live their lives normally, without suffering or pain.

In order for me to reach this goal, I must stick to my dream no matter what obstacles I face, and I must prepare myself well to excel in study until I reach this goal.

I know very well that this goal is different from other goals that do not require effort and dedication since childhood, and that I will face many obstacles in improving and developing myself in study.

The wonderful thing about this job is that it brings you a good reputation and great fame whenever you apply for it, and you have many people who trust you and know your experience, which makes them leave you the judgment in diagnosis and treatment with confidence. It was explained in my aim in life essay.

There is the social aspect, that the character of the doctor is loved by everyone, children or adults, as he represents one of the respected personalities in society who imposes himself on everyone, and obtains everyone’s love, which gives the person a good aura, and great approval for his role in society.

It also contains many skills that the doctor learns from his graduation until his last working day in this profession, so it is very interesting for me, because it does not have a specific or known ceiling in learning, treatment and creativity.

Therefore, it represents a great challenge for me, and this is one of the qualities that I love in myself, the challenge and not being afraid of the unknown, in addition to my love for development and progress, especially the improvement of the tools, inventions, or treatment methods available to me, It was explained in my aim in life essay.

It is also one of the jobs that a person can gain many ideas through his work environment, get to know many different nationalities, meet people with a high level of intellectual progress, and can gain many useful points from them.

It is also a wonderful environment to work, where there are many superior people, who are always striving to progress and reach the best possible result, which creates a competitive atmosphere always, and there is always an incentive to research, progress, learn and use the latest and best methods.

Although it is a wonderful job and has a lot of achievements to be proud of, but it includes a lot of risks and a lot of failure that a person will face, It was explained in my aim in life essay.

I realize how difficult it is, but I see a wonderful side to it, which is facing reality and accepting it. The doctor gives his best, and he seeks to treat the patient or provide the best possible result, and until he can do this, he will face some failures and obstacles that he will learn from and make him strong so that he can continue and work without getting bored.

My Aim in Life Essay 1 (200 Words)

Everyone has an aim in life, which he or she wants to achieve at any cost. Sometimes they are so desperate to achieve the goal that they work/study 24/7 putting efforts much beyond their actual capacities.

Speaking of my aim in life – since childhood I have nurtured a desire to become a civil servant or a government officer to be more specific. When someone expresses a desire to become an officer, it is not money that he/she has in mind. Had it been money, I would have opted for other lucrative and rewarding career options.

I want to become an officer, because I had been always fascinated by the way an officer conducts himself/herself in public. There is something orderly yet humble; commanding yet considerate in the behavior of an officer. You will never ever see a responsible government officer behaving or talking like common everyday way farers. He/She is always composed, calm and someone you can rely on for help and advice.

It is these personality traits of an officer that fascinates me the most and I also wanted to be recognized and respected as an officer. I know that it is easier to dream than to transform the same into reality. Nevertheless, I am trying hard and up to best of my capacity to achieve it.

Just in case, if you also tried hard but failed to become an officer for some reason, I have a very generous piece of advice for you. “Never let the Officer in You Die”! Even if you don’t hold a gazetted post, no one on planet can snatch your right of “Behaving like an officer”. Even if you can’t become one, you can always behave like one and do justice to your dream and passion.

My Aim in Life Essay in English

An aimless person is like a living dead body. Every single person in this world must have their aim in life. Having an aim is the purpose of life. The aim is a desire of any person to become in the future when they become an adult or capable of achieving it. Aim helps us to achieve our existence, our purpose of life that we have decided. Setting an appropriate aim is also a very important part of life. Whatever we think and want to be in our future, we have to be aware of the consequences, benefits, and ways to achieve it. It is like a goal that we set in our life to become in the future. To achieve the goals, we have decided to achieve them in life and become successful, for making this happen real, we must have to go through numerous challenges, and a lot of obstacles can come in our path to break the confidence level and forces us to quit the targeted aim, dream in between and go back or change the aim like quitters.

An aimless person is like a random path without any particular destination. The purpose in life of a person gives him a reason to live with joy and happiness and make an example for others to live life in the best way like a goal achiever. We all have set our different aims in life to become after a few years, some of us choose our goals by our own creation of minds, some choose their goal influenced by the family member or person whom we like and want to become like them.

I also set a perfect goal that I have decided to achieve in the future. My aim in life is to become a teacher and inspire students and other people to become good people. Before making this my aim, I asked myself many questions, like why I wanted to become a teacher instead of a doctor, engineer, actor, athlete, wrestler, boxer, scientist, pilot, astronaut, etc. Then I realized all persons become something in their lives only because of a correct mentor, guide, or teacher. A teacher educates people about everything in life, whether for educational purposes or other things. Nobody grows longer in life without a teacher, whether a teacher is from school, parents, or any random person from which we get inspiration. A teacher has the potential to change the desired needs of the world and the ability to improve them.

I know about basic internet using, managing emails, word processing software, etc. And I am reading a book on ‘Learning HTML’. I hope that will help me to understand coding in the future.

The reason behind My Aim in Life: I love to play video games and I am very passionate about that. When I was a kid I thought that how do they create what types of games? But now I know that people who worked as a software or game developer can build video games. I have so many ideas on my head and I hope I will find so many ideas in the future to create games. I want to build my own video game and let that play for every single kid in this world.

My Preparation: I know that I need to pursue a degree in computer science in the programming sector if I want to become a game or software developer and I am preparing myself for this. I hope that I will do a good result in my SSC examination.

And then I will complete my HSC with good results. I will admit in a public or private university in the course of Computer Science and Engineering. I know there are so many good CSE universities here in my country.

Conclusion: I am really honest and passionate about my aim in life. I will try my best to reach my goal and I suggest everyone do the same.

How to Thrive as You Age

A cheap drug may slow down aging. a study will determine if it works.

Allison Aubrey - 2015 square

Allison Aubrey

Can a pill slow down aging?

A drug taken by millions of people to control diabetes may do more than lower blood sugar.

Research suggests metformin has anti-inflammatory effects that could help protect against common age-related diseases including heart disease, cancer, and cognitive decline.

Scientists who study the biology of aging have designed a clinical study, known as The TAME Trial, to test whether metformin can help prevent these diseases and promote a longer healthspan in healthy, older adults.

Michael Cantor, an attorney, and his wife Shari Cantor , the mayor of West Hartford, Connecticut both take metformin. "I tell all my friends about it," Michael Cantor says. "We all want to live a little longer, high-quality life if we can," he says.

Michael Cantor started on metformin about a decade ago when his weight and blood sugar were creeping up. Shari Cantor began taking metformin during the pandemic after she read that it may help protect against serious infections.

The Cantors are in their mid-60s and both say they feel healthy and have lots of energy. Both noticed improvements in their digestive systems – feeling more "regular" after they started on the drug,

Metformin costs less than a dollar a day, and depending on insurance, many people pay no out-of-pocket costs for the drug.

"I don't know if metformin increases lifespan in people, but the evidence that exists suggests that it very well might," says Steven Austad , a senior scientific advisor at the American Federation for Aging Research who studies the biology of aging.

An old drug with surprising benefits

Metformin was first used to treat diabetes in the 1950s in France. The drug is a derivative of guanidine , a compound found in Goat's Rue, an herbal medicine long used in Europe.

The FDA approved metformin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in the U.S. in the 1990s. Since then, researchers have documented several surprises, including a reduced risk of cancer. "That was a bit of a shock," Austad says. A meta-analysis that included data from dozens of studies, found people who took metformin had a lower risk of several types of cancers , including gastrointestinal, urologic and blood cancers.

Austad also points to a British study that found a lower risk of dementia and mild cognitive decline among people with type 2 diabetes taking metformin. In addition, there's research pointing to improved cardiovascular outcomes in people who take metformin including a reduced risk of cardiovascular death .

As promising as this sounds, Austad says most of the evidence is observational, pointing only to an association between metformin and the reduced risk. The evidence stops short of proving cause and effect. Also, it's unknown if the benefits documented in people with diabetes will also reduce the risk of age-related diseases in healthy, older adults.

"That's what we need to figure out," says Steve Kritchevsky , a professor of gerontology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, who is a lead investigator for the Tame Trial.

The goal is to better understand the mechanisms and pathways by which metformin works in the body. For instance, researchers are looking at how the drug may help improve energy in the cells by stimulating autophagy, which is the process of clearing out or recycling damaged bits inside cells.

Scientists can tell how fast you're aging. Now, the trick is to slow it down

You can order a test to find out your biological age. Is it worth it?

You can order a test to find out your biological age. Is it worth it?

Researchers also want to know more about how metformin can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which may slow biological aging.

"When there's an excess of oxidative stress, it will damage the cell. And that accumulation of damage is essentially what aging is," Kritchevsky explains.

When the forces that are damaging cells are running faster than the forces that are repairing or replacing cells, that's aging, Kritchevsky says. And it's possible that drugs like metformin could slow this process down.

By targeting the biology of aging, the hope is to prevent or delay multiple diseases, says Dr. Nir Barzilai of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who leads the effort to get the trial started.

The ultimate in preventative medicine

Back in 2015, Austad and a bunch of aging researchers began pushing for a clinical trial.

"A bunch of us went to the FDA to ask them to approve a trial for metformin,' Austad recalls, and the agency was receptive. "If you could help prevent multiple problems at the same time, like we think metformin may do, then that's almost the ultimate in preventative medicine," Austad says.

The aim is to enroll 3,000 people between the ages of 65 and 79 for a six-year trial. But Dr. Barzilai says it's been slow going to get it funded. "The main obstacle with funding this study is that metformin is a generic drug, so no pharmaceutical company is standing to make money," he says.

Barzilai has turned to philanthropists and foundations, and has some pledges. The National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, set aside about $5 million for the research, but that's not enough to pay for the study which is estimated to cost between $45 and $70 million.

The frustration over the lack of funding is that if the trial points to protective effects, millions of people could benefit. "It's something that everybody will be able to afford," Barzilai says.

Currently the FDA doesn't recognize aging as a disease to treat, but the researchers hope this would usher in a paradigm shift — from treating each age-related medical condition separately, to treating these conditions together, by targeting aging itself.

For now, metformin is only approved to treat type 2 diabetes in the U.S., but doctors can prescribe it off-label for conditions other than its approved use .

Michael and Shari Cantor's doctors were comfortable prescribing it to them, given the drug's long history of safety and the possible benefits in delaying age-related disease.

"I walk a lot, I hike, and at 65 I have a lot of energy," Michael Cantor says. I feel like the metformin helps," he says. He and Shari say they have not experienced any negative side effects.

Research shows a small percentage of people who take metformin experience GI distress that makes the drug intolerable. And, some people develop a b12 vitamin deficiency. One study found people over the age of 65 who take metformin may have a harder time building new muscle.

Millions of women are 'under-muscled.' These foods help build strength

Millions of women are 'under-muscled.' These foods help build strength

"There's some evidence that people who exercise who are on metformin have less gain in muscle mass, says Dr. Eric Verdin , President of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. That could be a concern for people who are under-muscled .

But Verdin says it may be possible to repurpose metformin in other ways "There are a number of companies that are exploring metformin in combination with other drugs," he says. He points to research underway to combine metformin with a drug called galantamine for the treatment of sarcopenia , which is the medical term for age-related muscle loss. Sarcopenia affects millions of older people, especially women .

The science of testing drugs to target aging is rapidly advancing, and metformin isn't the only medicine that may treat the underlying biology.

"Nobody thinks this is the be all and end all of drugs that target aging," Austad says. He says data from the clinical trial could stimulate investment by the big pharmaceutical companies in this area. "They may come up with much better drugs," he says.

Michael Cantor knows there's no guarantee with metformin. "Maybe it doesn't do what we think it does in terms of longevity, but it's certainly not going to do me any harm," he says.

Cantor's father had his first heart attack at 51. He says he wants to do all he can to prevent disease and live a healthy life, and he thinks Metformin is one tool that may help.

For now, Dr. Barzilai says the metformin clinical trial can get underway when the money comes in.

Rochester students aim to ‘level the field’ for high schoolers applying to college

A trio of undergraduates teamed up to bring accessible, high-quality education consulting services to the community. Now, they’re branching out beyond Rochester.

Two years ago, Adarsh Mavathaveedu ’24 was helping his younger brother fill out college applications back home in Flemington, New Jersey, when he came to a realization.

“I could provide him with an abundance of resources and guidance—resources I wish I had when I was in high school,” the University of Rochester neuroscience major says. “But being the eldest child in an immigrant family, I had navigated the process alone. I thought, ‘What if there was a way for my brother, and students like him, to get free advice?’”

Mavathaveedu was a teaching assistant in a biology class at Rochester when he pitched his idea to Hana Zhang ’26, a health, behavior, and society major from Westbury, New York, and Keira Donnelly ’26, a neuroscience and psychology double major from Victor, New York.

“Together, we founded Project Level the Field ,” Mavathaveedu says. “Our motto is ‘making college applications ever better.’” (A take on the University’s motto of Meliora, meaning “ever better”).

The rise of educational consultants in college admissions

Free advice to aspiring college students is available online, although finding it and applying it without assistance or guidance from someone more familiar with the college application process in the United States can be challenging. There are also numerous independent educational consultants, or IECs, available nationwide who work one-on-one with students. But that is a costly venture: According to data from the Independent Educational Consultants Association , most IECs charge more than $4,000 per year for services, with some as high as $40,000.

The IECA reports that there were about 1,500 full-time independent educational consultants in 2010, and that number has skyrocketed to nearly 10,000 this year, with an estimated additional 10,000 to 15,000 working part-time. The reasons for the influx include the increased cost of higher education, overworked high school counselors, and changing trends in college admissions that started, in part, with the introduction of the Common Application in 1975 . A generation or so ago, test scores and grade-point averages were the key determining factors. Now, many colleges and universities, including Rochester, place less emphasis on standardized test scores and take a more holistic approach when making admissions selections.

“Over the years, the college admissions process in the United States has become increasingly complex, in part because students are applying to more colleges,” says Jason Nevinger, Rochester’s senior director for admissions . “The increased application volume, coupled with the non-standardized approach to how admissions offices manage their application process—the use of standardized testing, and various application plans such as Early Decision and Early Action —has resulted in more families turning to paid educational consultants to help navigate the college admissions process in hopes of gaining an edge. But, in general, it’s those families with the financial means that can afford them.”

Making the college application process more accessible

Mavathaveedu, Donnelly, and Zhang created a program that would “level the field,” giving underrepresented and first-generation students the guidance needed to successfully undertake and complete today’s college application process, which generally includes writing a long-form essay, compiling a resume or list of activities, securing letters of recommendation, and providing a high school transcript.

Project Level the Field currently has 12 volunteer student mentors—10 from Rochester, one from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and one from North Carolina State. “We connected with the non-Rochester students through LinkedIn,” Mavathaveedu says.

The group’s mission is to ensure that everybody has free, high-quality college application resources regardless of race, ethnicity, or financial status. Like paid educational consultants, the Level the Field students—who refer to themselves as mentors—provide various services, including resume-building, college essay editing, interview training, and financial aid assistance. As part of the mentoring process, they also help participating high school students research and compile a list of potential colleges to which they might apply.

Project leaders reach out to high school guidance counselors, offering in-person or remote one-on-one sessions. They also promote their volunteer work on the group’s website and Instagram ( @projectlevelthefield ). Outreach efforts and events have taken place at many Rochester area high schools, but mentors also have advised students at their former high schools.

“It’s all about giving back,” Mavathaveedu says.

So far, more than 150 high school students—mostly from the Rochester City School District—have participated in the program, with students being accepted to a range of higher education institutions. Mavathaveedu says mentees have been accepted to Ivy League schools like Cornell University and selective universities including Rochester, Penn State, Notre Dame, Rutgers, and Syracuse, as well as community colleges and small liberal arts colleges.

The group plans to add around 20 new mentors from Rochester and one from Johns Hopkins University in the coming year, and recently filed paperwork to become recognized as a non-profit organization, which would further expand their reach. They are expanding considerably even as Mavathaveedu, who conceived the project, prepares to graduate in May.

Leveling the field at Rochester while expanding beyond

Zhang, the daughter of immigrants, says Project Level the Field was appealing because she wanted to make a difference in the lives of students who mirrored her own experience.

“I was scared to reach out for help when I was applying to college,” she says. “I didn’t share my admissions essay with anyone because I didn’t want to be judged. If I didn’t get in, I felt people would see me as a failure.”

Zhang feels strongly connected to the students she mentors because she is not far removed from what they are currently experiencing. “When we first went to East High School [in Rochester], I was a year older than the students,” she says. “I could empathize with their experiences and hardships.”

Last November, Project Level the Field cohosted a pre-medical symposium on the University’s River Campus with the Rochester fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon . The event included representatives from the University’s Office of Undergraduate Research , the Greene Center for Career Education and Connections , the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students , and others.

More than 160 Rochester-area high school students attended.

“Level the Field has a great mission with a great cause,” says Jonathan Bratt, a senior career advisor at the Greene Center who took part in the symposium. “They saw a need and developed a way to support and encourage high school and college students needing guidance to navigate the entire application process.”

Even with Mavathaveedu graduating, Project Level the Field’s other founders are excited about expanding beyond Rochester.

“We want to establish new branches where some of our mentors are affiliated,” Donnelly says. “While the project originated in Rochester, its missions and values transcend the confines of any single community. We know it’s going to be difficult without Adarsh here. He’s been an accessible and insightful mentor, integral to our journey.”

Donnelly adds, “The greatest challenge lies in the uncertainty of the future, but as a team, we love to be challenged, and cannot wait to see how Level the Field will grow in the future.”

Tips from Project Level the Field’s student educational consultants

The founders of Project Level the Field—Keira Donnelly ’26, Adarsh Mavathaveedu ’24, and Hana Zhang ’26—offer tips for high school students interested in applying to college.

Opt for Quality over quantity.

High school students often engage in a “resume war,” feeling the need to participate in activities they may not be interested in simply because they see others doing so. When they compare themselves to their peers, they may unnecessarily feel like they are falling behind. In reality, everyone has unique qualities, and individuals should participate in extracurricular activities they are passionate about. This ensures that not only do you spend time doing things you love, but that it also translates well for the application process. A well-documented commitment to a few select activities you love speaks louder than a long list of superficial engagements.

Take a break.

Many students neglect their physical and mental health during the college application process. We can only produce our best work when we’re feeling our best. This means actively protecting our health by scheduling periodic rest days, eating well, exercising, and spending time with family and friends.

Note, too, that there is rarely an ideal time to start writing the oft-required college application essay. Often, the stress of writing the perfect essay discourages and delays the writing process. However, some clues may indicate that you should take a break. For example, if you feel a mental fog, or if you’re having trouble staying awake or concentrating, it’s time to take a break. Go for a walk, take a nap, clear your head, and come back.

Similarly, your environment can play a big role: We recommend finding an area with minimal distractions, natural lighting, and a setting that allows you to work well.

Keep an open mind.

A rigid mindset can prevent you from exploring schools and limit your application pool. College is largely about taking risks and discovering yourself, so don’t hesitate to take those same risks during the application process and try new things. Many of us were so focused on the prestige of Ivy League schools that we overlooked the incredible opportunities at other institutions, both nationally and internationally. Many colleges offer equally valuable educational experiences regardless of their acceptance rates. Taking risks means considering schools in unexpected locations. Sometimes, the place we least expect to find ourselves is where we truly belong.

Stay true to yourself.

You will attend the college you choose, not anyone else. Find a school that meets your criteria with regard to academics, cocurricular opportunities, athletics, and more. Visualize your ideal college experience, considering both social and academic aspects. Ask yourself: “Are there social organizations that represent my identity and beliefs? Are there student clubs tailored to my hobbies and interests? How does this university handle on-campus conflicts?” It is crucial to select a place that not only fosters personal growth but also provides a safe space to do so. The more you explore—reading about students’ experiences posted on the admissions site or elsewhere online, meeting with current students, and eventually attending admitted student day—the better you can determine which college is the right fit for you.

Saying Goodbye to My Brilliant Friend, the Poetry Critic Helen Vendler

Two books, with nothing on their covers, sitting on a plain background. The two books are at close to a right angle with each other and most of their pages are touching.

By Roger Rosenblatt

The author, most recently, of “Cataract Blues: Running the Keyboard.”

One makes so few new friends in older age — I mean, real friends, the ones you bond with and hold dear, as if you’d known one another since childhood.

Old age often prevents, or at least tempers, such discoveries. The joy of suddenly finding someone of compatible tastes, politics, intellectual interests and sense of humor can be shadowed, if tacitly, by the inevitable prospect of loss.

I became friends with Helen Vendler — the legendary poetry critic who died last week — six years ago, after she came to a talk I gave at Harvard about my 1965-66 Fulbright year in Ireland. Our friendship was close at the outset and was fortified and deepened by many letters between us, by our writing.

Some critics gain notice by something new they discover in the literature they examine. Helen became the most important critic of the age by dealing with something old and basic — the fact that great poetry was, well, lovable. Her vast knowledge of it was not like anyone else’s, and she embraced the poets she admired with informed exuberance.

The evening we met, Helen and I huddled together for an hour, maybe two, speaking of the great Celtic scholar John Kelleher, under whom we had both studied; of Irish poetry; and of our families. Helen was born to cruelly restrictive Irish Catholic parents who would not think of her going to anything but a Catholic college. When Helen rebelled against them, she was effectively tossed out and never allowed to return home.

She told me all this at our very first meeting. And I told her the sorrows of my own life — the untimely death of my daughter, Amy, and the seven-plus years my wife, Ginny, and I spent helping to rear her three children. And I told Helen unhappy things about my own upbringing. The loneliness. I think we both sensed that we had found someone we could trust with our lives.

I never asked Helen why she had come to my talk in the first place, though I had recognized her immediately. After spending a life with English and American poetry — especially the poetry of Wallace Stevens — how could I not? The alert tilt of her head, the two parenthetical lines around the mouth that always seemed on the verge of saying something meaningful and the sad-kind-wise eyes of the most significant literary figure since Edmund Wilson.

And unlike Wilson, Helen was never compelled to show off. She knew as much about American writing as Wilson, and, I believe, loved it more.

It was that, even more than the breadth and depth of her learning, that set her apart. She was a poet who didn’t write poetry, but felt it like a poet, and thus knew the art form to the core of her being. Her method of “close reading,” studying a poem intently word by word, was her way of writing it in reverse.

Weeks before Helen’s death and what would have been her 91st birthday, we exchanged letters. I had sent her an essay I’d just written on the beauty of wonder, stemming from the wonder so many people felt upon viewing the total solar eclipse earlier this month. I often sent Helen things I wrote. Some she liked less than others, and she was never shy to say so. She liked the essay on wonder, though she said she was never a wonderer herself, but a “hopeless pragmatist,” not subject to miracles, except upon two occasions. One was the birth of her son, David, whom she mentioned in letters often. She loved David deeply, and both were happy when she moved from epic Cambridge to lyrical Laguna Niguel, Calif., to be near him, as she grew infirm.

Her second miracle, coincidentally, occurred when Seamus Heaney drove her to see a solar eclipse at Tintern Abbey. There, among the Welsh ruins, Helen had an astonishing experience, one that she described to me in a way that seemed almost to evoke Wordsworth:

I had of course read descriptions of the phenomena of a total eclipse, but no words could equal the total-body/total landscape effect; the ceasing of bird song; the inexorability of the dimming to a crescent and then to a corona; the total silence; the gradual salience of the stars; the iciness of the silhouette of the towers; the looming terror of the steely eclipse of all of nature. Now that quelled utterly any purely “scientific” interest. One became pure animal, only animal, no “thought-process” being even conceivable.

One who claims not to know wonders shows herself to be one.

She was so intent on the beauty of the poets she understood so deeply, she never could see why others found her appreciations remarkable. Once, when I sent her a note complimenting her on a wonderfully original observation she’d made in a recent article, she wrote: “So kind of you to encourage me. I always feel that everything I say would be obvious to anyone who can read, so am always amazed when someone praises something.”

Only an innocent of the highest order would say such a beautiful, preposterous thing. When recently the American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded her the Gold Medal for Belle Lettres and Criticism, Helen was shocked.

“You could have floored me when I got the call,” she wrote to me, adding: “Perhaps I was chosen by the committee because of my advanced age; if so, I can’t complain. The quote that came to mind was Lowell’s ‘My head grizzled with the years’ gold garbage.’”

She was always doing that — attaching a quotation from poetry to a thought or experience of her own, as if she occupied the same room as all the great poets, living with them as closely as loved ones in a tenement.

Shelley called poets the “unacknowledged legislators of the world.” I never fully got that famous line. But if the legislators’ laws apply to feeling and conduct, I think he was onto something. If one reads poetry — ancient and modern — as deeply as Helen did, and stays with it, and lets it roll around in one’s head, the effect is transporting. You find yourself in a better realm of feeling and language. And nothing of the noisier outer world — not Donald Trump, not Taylor Swift — can get to you.

In our last exchange of letters, Helen told me about the death she was arranging for herself. I was brokenhearted to realize that I was losing someone who had given me and countless others so much thought and joy. Her last words to me were telling, though, and settled the matter as only practical, spiritual Helen could:

I feel not a whit sad at the fact of death, but massively sad at leaving friends behind, among whom you count dearly. I have always known what my true feelings are by whatever line of poetry rises unbidden to my mind on any occasion; to my genuine happiness, this time was a line from Herbert’s “Evensong,” in which God (always in Herbert, more like Jesus than Jehovah), says to the poet, “Henceforth repose; your work is done.”

She closed her letter as I closed my response. “Love and farewell.”

Digital transformation, web platform and app aim to improve quality of life for people with parkinson’s disease.

Research News / May 02, 2024

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative conditions worldwide. It causes motor impairments such as tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness, and balance problems. Memory can also worsen as the disease progresses. The individual course of the disease cannot be predicted, so experts recommend regular, close patient monitoring to allow for rapid responses to any changes in symptoms. New technological tools aim to facilitate communication between doctors, caregivers, and patients and improve the care situation. In the ParkProReakt project, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT are working with partners to create a digital platform and app that, used with wearables, will track the course of the disease in an effort to improve quality of life for Parkinson’s patients.

Mit der App Active PD können Menschen mit Parkinson ihre motorischen Fähigkeiten testen und Fragen zu ihrem Wohlbefinden beantworten.

There are currently about 400,000 people living with Parkinson’s disease in Germany alone. Medications can help with symptoms, but there is no cure. Certain cells responsible for carrying out movements gradually die off, so people with the disease become increasingly limited in their movements and have hand and feet tremors at rest. Getting to the doctor’s office is a challenge for many patients, and there can be long distances involved, especially in rural areas. As a result, patients might only be seen every six months or even less often. New symptoms often go unrecognized by patients and their loved ones, so the information is not passed along to the treatment team. In the ParkProReakt flagship project, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT and partners (Philipps-Universität Marburg, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Praxis für Neurologie und Psychiatrie Hamburg Walddörfer, AWO Stadtkreis Giessen e. V. and AWO des Landesverband Hamburg e. V., Techniker Krankenkasse, Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen, University of Cologne, Universität zu Lübeck, LiKe Research GmbH, and Portabiles Healthcare Technologies GmbH) plan to foster ongoing communication between doctors and patients and enable regular checkups. The project partners are investigating whether a digital solution can help improve quality of life for patients with Parkinson’s disease. The neurology team at Philipps-Universität Marburg is coordinating the project, which is slated to run until the end of 2025.

Demand-driven care model with a holistic approach

By developing a web platform and a mobile smartphone app that pairs with an Apple Watch via Bluetooth, the partners plan to establish a proactive, demand-driven, cross-sector care model that follows a holistic approach involving healthcare workers and specialists, who can communicate with each other on the platform. The ultimate goal is to ensure better patient care and ease some of the burden on family caregivers, as using the digital solution will help them assess changes in the course of the disease. “The app, which is named Active PD, is used by patients themselves after an initial familiarization phase. The data collected using the app are transmitted to the web platform, which is available to doctors,” explains Daniel Wolferts, a scientist at Fraunhofer FIT. Wolferts and his team are responsible for the human-centric design of both systems, among other aspects. They are working to design the user interface to be user-friendly. “How do we design an app for Parkinson’s patients, and what kind of information do these people want to get? How do we visualize the data in both applications in a user-friendly way for all the different groups concerned, and how do we meet the requirements most effectively? How can we make it so patients can undergo the necessary testing and examinations right on their phone without facing too big a motor challenge? Those are the kinds of questions we’re working on.”

Clinical study with 170 participants

The concept is being validated in clinical studies with 170 patients over a period of six months. One intervention group is to receive the digital solution, while a control group will receive conventional treatment without any added technological tools. The patients are asked to perform standardized Parkinson’s-related tests twice a week using the app and the Apple Watch, which captures their movements via sensors. The tests look mainly at their motor skills and overall condition, helping doctors and other providers to better gauge disease-related symptoms and quickly take appropriate action in response. For example, participants are asked to do finger exercises in front of the smartphone camera, tapping their index finger and thumb together as fast as they can several times in a row. An image recognition feature detects the thumb and forefinger and measures the distance between them during the test. Another exercise involves opening and closing a fist several times at a rapid pace. “Parkinson’s patients have a hard time making these movements quickly and fluidly due to the disease,” the researcher explains. In addition, sensors are used to check whether participants are able to hold their hand still for a certain period without trembling — a challenge for people with Parkinson’s disease.
