Multiplication Learning
Once children have mastered place value to 100, and learn to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10, they are ready to start multiplication. Multiplication follows on naturally from counting in steps of different sizes.
When children first learn multiplication, the learning is linked to addition which they are already very familiar with. So 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 becomes 2 four times or 2 x 4 (or 4 x 2).
Once children have understood what multiplication is, they are then ready to start learning their tables, learning to multiply by one or two digit numbers, and then applying their knowledge to solve problems.
At the very last stage in elementary math, they are ready to start multiplying decimals.
The multiplication printable worksheets below will take your child through their multiplication learning step-by-step so that they are learning the math skills to move on to the next step, as well as starting off at a nice easy level to gain confidence.

- Times Table Grid
Times table grid – Free printable blank and completed 12×12 versions
KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4
Times table grid download
This free 12×12 times table grid download is easy to print out and distribute to pupils in maths lessons. Pupils can fill in the missing numbers on the blank version, strengthening their multiplication skills and fostering a deeper understanding of the relationships within times tables.
Alternatively, the completed 12×12 times table grid serves as a helpful reference tool. They’re really useful whether you teach in primary or secondary school.
12×12 multiplication grids are useful for maths teachers in the classroom for several reasons:
Visual representation
Multiplication grids provide a visual representation of the multiplication table, making it easier for students to understand and remember multiplication facts .
The grid structure also organises the numbers in a systematic way, allowing your students to see the patterns and relationships between the numbers.
Multiplication fluency
By using the multiplication grid in your classroom, your students can practise and develop fluency in multiplication. It will help them learn and memorise multiplication facts more effectively by providing a structured format to follow.
They can also visually trace the rows and columns to find the product of two numbers.
Use multiplication grids in school as an assessment tool to evaluate your students’ understanding of multiplication. Give pupils timed tests or exercises where they have to fill in the missing numbers in the grid.
This will also allow you to gauge students’ multiplication fluency and identify areas where they may need additional support or practice.
Using a times table grid
If you’re planning how to teach times tables , 12×12 multiplication grids can serve as a valuable teaching aid that promotes understanding, fluency, and problem-solving skills.
To use one, start by identifying the numbers you want to multiply across the top and left side of the grid. Then locate the corresponding row and column to find the product.
Use a times table grid in the classroom for repetitive drills, memorisation or problem-solving activities.

How to: the grid method of multiplication
For some, maths homework is a breeze. For others, it’s a weekly chore. Just how do you engage children with something like multiplication? It’s (relatively) simple: encourage them to spot and understand the patterns. Here, former teacher and mathemagician Andrew Jeffrey shows us how to use the grid method of multiplication.

Long Multiplication Worksheets
This page includes Long Multiplication worksheets for students who have mastered the basic multiplication facts and are learning to multiply 2-, 3-, 4- and more digit numbers. Sometimes referred to as long multiplication or multi-digit multiplication, the questions on these worksheets require students to have mastered the multiplication facts from 0 to 9.
There are a variety of strategies for completing long multiplication including the classic paper and pencil methods, lattice multiplication (which we feature on this page), mental strategies, manipulative use, technology, and various other paper and pencil algorithms. Multi-Digit multiplication can be a frustrating experience for many students. Try to teach multi-digit multiplication using more than one strategy.
Most Popular Long Multiplication Worksheets this Week
Long multiplication practice worksheets including a variety of number sizes and options for different number formats.
Two-Digit multiplication is a natural place to start after students have mastered their multiplication facts. The concept of multiplying two-digit numbers requires a knowledge of place and place value, especially if students are to fully understand what they are accomplishing with the various strategies they use. A question such as 24 × 5 can be thought of as (20 + 4) × 5. Mentally, this becomes much easier as students multiply 20 by 5 then 4 by 5 and add the two products. A good way to build understanding of place value is with base ten blocks. These manipulatives also translate very well into paper and pencil and mental math strategies.
An extra digit can throw off some students but add an extra challenge to others. Always ensure that students are ready for three-digit multiplication or both you and your student will be frustrated. Three-digit multiplication worksheets require a mastery of single-digit multiplication facts and a knowledge of a multi-digit multiplication strategy that will enable students to both understand the question and get the correct answer. Four-digit multiplication was invented in 350 B.C. as a way of punishing children who stole bread from the market. Just kidding! It's actually a great challenge for students who have experienced success with their multiplication facts and have a good handle on a long multiplication strategy. What do you give students who have mastered their multiplication facts and long multiplication and who love a challenge? Look no further than five- to eight-digit multiplication. Enjoy!
There are no thousand separators in the numbers on the first worksheets. It makes it a little more difficult to read the numbers, but sometimes it is better not to have too many things in the way when students are learning long multiplication. The answer keys include answers with the steps shown, so students and teachers can diagnose any problems in the steps they took to answer the questions. The answers use a paper and pencil algorithm that is commonly used in the U.S. and other countries.

Separating thousands with spaces avoids any confusion with commas and periods. Various number formats in different countries and languages use commas and periods for both decimals and thousand separators, but a space is only ever used as a thousands separator. It is more common in some countries such as Canada and France, but it is being adopted more in other parts of the world.

Other Long Multiplication Strategies
Lattice, or sieve, multiplication is a great strategy for students to use to calculate long multiplication problems on pencil and paper. We've made the first step of preparing a lattice easy as the worksheets below have them pre-drawn. With a little practice, students can use graph paper or draw their own lattices freehand. The first factor is separated by place value along the top of the lattice, giving each place value its own column. The second factor is separated in the same way, but along the right side with one place value per row. The single digit column and row numbers are multiplied together and their product is written in the corresponding box, separating the tens and ones places on either side of the diagonal. Finally, the diagonal "rows" are summed and regrouped starting with the diagonal in the lower right hand corner which will only have a singl-digit in it. The answer keys we've provided should give you a good idea of how to accomplish lattice multiplication like a pro. Once students have a little practice, you might find that this is their preferred method for calculating the products of large numbers. This method is highly scalable, which means it is a straight-forward task to multiply a 10-digit by a 10-digit number, etc.

The distributive property of multiplication allows students to "split" factors into addends to make the multiplication easier. This also helps students learn to complete multiplication mentally rather than using paper and pencil methods. Often times, the numbers are split up by place value, so 123 becomes 100 + 20 + 3. If one wanted to multiply 123 by 4, you could multiply 100 by 4, 20 by 4 and 3 by 4 to get 400, 80 and 12 which sums to 492. If you multiply a multi-digit number by a multi-digit number, you can split both numbers into place value addends. For example, 938 × 74 = (900 + 30 + 4) × (70 + 4) = (900 × 70) + (900 × 4) + (30 × 70) + (30 × 4) + (8 × 70) + (8 × 4) = 63000 + 3600 + 2100 + 120 + 560 + 32 = 69412. All of the worksheets in this section have a model question included. Of course, it might be easier to complete questions with larger numbers using box multiplication.

The halving and doubling strategy is accomplished very much in the same way as its name. Simply halve one number and double the other then multiply. In many cases, this makes the multiplication of two numbers easier to accomplish mentally. This strategy is not for every multiplication problem, but it certainly works well if certain numbers are involved. For example, doubling a 5 results in a 10 which most people would have an easier time multiplying. Of course, this would rely on the other factor being easily halved. 5 × 72, using the halving and doubling strategy (doubling the first number and halving the second in this case) results in 10 × 36 = 360. Practicing with the worksheets in this section will help students become more familiar with cases in which this strategy would be used.

Learn your multiplication tables
At Timestables.com you can easily practice all of your tables. The arithmetic problems are clear and simple so you can immediately get started on practicing your tables. Select one of the multiplication table you wish to practice from the list below and show what you can do on the speed test or printout great worksheets.
Which multiplication table do you want to learn?
Speed test and multiplication tables diploma.
Multiplication games
Choose the table you want to practice from the following. First you can practice the multiplication facts in sequence and once you have got the hang of that you can practice all the sums in random order for each table. If you have forgotten any answers, just go back to the 'all tables in sequence' page and practice them again thoroughly before trying again.
Once you have got the hang of a number of tables you can select the speed test and choose the tables you want to practice getting quicker at. If you make a mistake, you came see what the right answer is at the end of the test. This will help you learn all of your tables. The speed test is good practice for getting your tables diploma. On the tables diploma the questions are a bit quicker than on the speed test, but if you get all of them right you will get your tables diploma. There are two tables diplomas. The little diploma is made up of 30 questions. Your little diploma shows you can do the 1,2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables. For the big tables diploma you are given 40 questions which include all the tables from 1 to 12.
Learn the multiplication tables in an interactive way with the free math multiplication learning games for 2rd, 3th, 4th and 5th grade. The game element in the times tables games make it even more fun learn.
Practice your multiplication tables
Here you can find additional information about practicing multiplication tables at primary school. The 1 times table, 2 times table, 3 times table, 4 times table, 5 times table and 10 times table are the first times tables to be learned. The 6 times table, 7 times table, 8 times table, 9 times table, 11 times table, 12 times table and of course all the tables in random order are the next step.
Not every child finds it easy to learn all the tables, so it is a good idea to keep on practicing them regularly after you learned them. There are a few tricks which make it easier to learn the tables and continue to master them, such as putting the smallest number first, which makes it easier for many children to answer correctly. For example 4 x 9 is easier to work out than 9 x 4. Switching the multiplication sum around makes it easier to answer. What also often helps is to use the tables you know well for answering the sums in the more difficult tables. One example of this is 6 x 7, which is often said to be tricky. If you do 5 x 7 first and then add 1 x 7 it is suddenly easier to answer. You can do this the other way round too. For instance with 4 x 7 you can do 5 x 7 first then subtract 1 x 7.
Why do we put so much effort into learning tables? Well, the multiplication tables keep on coming up in the next primary school years and even when you're at secondary school. You don't see them as tables, but as part of bigger mathematical problems. And it isn't only at school, but in your everyday life it is useful to know your times tables well so you can quickly work things out, for instance when you are buying or selling vegetables on the market. If you have any questions, comments or ideas for Timestables.com, please use our contact form. We'd be glad to hear from you.
The 5-step plan
Learn the times tables with the 5-step plan. We developed an innovative five step plan to help pupils learn the times tables in an effective and efficient way. This method has been tested at several schools and is recommended by teachers. The steps are:
- Step 1a: View, read aloud and repeat. To get familiar with the table.
- Step 1b: Fill in your times tables answers in sequence and check if you got them all right.
- Step 2: Drag the correct answers to the questions.
- Step 3: Fill in your answers for the mixed questions and check if you got them all right.
- Step 4: Multiple choice questions will help you to improve by looking at the questions in a different way.
- Step 5: Proof your knowledge and get the diploma.
When you finished the 5 steps you can play the memory game or exercise with the worksheet. Other way to train more are with the tempo test, the 1 minute test or to play the times tables games.
We advise to exercise daily for 15 minutes for maximum result.
