Water Pollution and How it Harms the Environment

Global pollution is a problem. Pollution can spread to remote areas where no one lives, despite the fact that urban areas are typically more polluted than the countryside. Air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution are the three main categories of pollution. Some contaminated water has a terrible smell, a muddy appearance, and floating trash. Some contaminated water appears clean, but it contains dangerous substances that you can't see or smell.

What is Water Pollution?

Water contamination occurs when pollutants pollute water sources and make the water unfit for use in drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities. Chemicals, garbage, bacteria, and parasites are examples of pollutants. Water is eventually damaged by all types of pollution. Lakes and oceans become contaminated by air pollution. Land contamination may contaminate an underground stream, a river, and ultimately the ocean. As a result, trash thrown on an empty lot can eventually contaminate a water source.

The water cycle, called the hydrological cycle, involves the following steps:

Evaporation- Because of the sun's heat, the water bodies such as oceans, lakes, seas etc., get heated up, and water evaporates in the air, forming water vapours.

Transpiration- Like evaporation, the plants and trees also lose water from them which goes to the atmosphere. This process is called transpiration.

Condensation- As the water evaporates, it starts to become cool because of the cold atmosphere in the air and because of this cooling down of water leads to the formation of clouds.

Precipitation- Because of the high movements of the wings, the clouds start to collide and then fall back to the earth’s surface in the form of rain. Sometimes they also fall back in the form of snow, hail, sleet etc., depending upon the temperature.

Runoff or Infiltration- After precipitation, the water either flows to the water bodies called runoff or is absorbed into the soil, called infiltration.

Causes of Water Pollution

There are many reasons for water pollution. Some of the reasons are directly affected by water pollution and some indirectly. Many factories and industries are dumping contaminated water, chemicals, and heavy metals into major waterways as a result of direct water pollution.

One more reason for water pollution is the use of modern techniques in farms. Farmers apply nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium in the form of chemical fertilizers, manure, and sludge. It causes farms to discharge large quantities of agrochemicals, organic matter, and saline drainage into water bodies. It indirectly affects water pollution.

Pollutants can be of various types such as organic, inorganic, radioactive etc. Water pollutants are discharged either from one point from pipes, channels etc., which are called point sources or from various other sources. They can be agricultural areas, industries etc., called dispersed sources.

Some of the major forms of water pollutants are as follows:

Sewage- Domestic sewage from homes contains various forms of pathogens that threaten the human body. Sewage treatment reduces the risk of pathogens, but this risk is not eliminated.

Domestic sewage majorly contains nitrates and phosphates, and excess of these substances allows the algae to grow on the surface of water bodies. Due to this, the clean water bodies become nutrient-rich water body and then slowly, the oxygen level of water bodies reduces. This is called eutrophication or cultural eutrophication (if this step rapidly takes place by the activities of humans). This leads to the early death of water bodies.

Toxins- The industrial or factory wastes that are not disposed of properly and contain chemicals such as mercury and lead are disposed of in the water bodies making the bodies toxic, radioactive, explosive and cancerous.

Sediments- Sediments are the result of soil erosion that is formed in the water bodies. These sediments imbalances the water bodies ecologically. They also interfere in the reproductive cycle of various aquatic animals living in the water.

Thermal pollution- Water bodies get polluted because of heat, and excess heat reduces the oxygen level of the water bodies. Some of the species of fish cannot live in such water bodies with very low oxygen levels. The disposal of cold waters from the power plants leads to increased thermal pollution in the water bodies.

Petroleum oil pollution- The runoff of oil into the water bodies, either accidentally as happened in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico, or intentionally, leads to an increase in water pollution.

As water is an important element of human health, polluted water directly affects the human body. Water pollution causes various diseases like typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, cancer, etc. Water pollution damages the plants and aquatic animals present in the river by reducing the oxygen content from the water. Polluted water washes the essential nutrients which plants need out of the soil and also leaves large amounts of aluminium in the soil, which can be harmful to plants.

Wastewater and sewage are a by-product of daily life and thus produced by each household through various activities like using soap, toilets, and detergents. Such sewage contains chemicals and bacteria which are harmful to human life and environmental health. Water pollution also leads to an imbalance in our ecosystem. Lastly, it also affects the food chain as the toxins in the water bodies are consumed by aquatic animals like fish, crabs etc., and then humans consume those animals forming turmoil.

Sometimes our tradition also becomes a cause for water pollution. Some people throw the statues of deities, flowers, pots, and ashes in rivers.

There are various standards to define water quality standards. Water meant for swimming may not be clean enough for drinking, or water meant for bathing may not be good for cooking. Therefore, there are different water standards for defined:

Stream standards- Standards that define streams, lakes, oceans or seas based on their maximum use.

Effluent standards- Define the specific standards for the level of contaminants or effluents allowed during the final discharge of those into the water bodies.

Drinking water standards- Define the level of contamination allowed in water that will be supplied for drinking or cooking in the domestic areas.

Different countries regulate their water quality standards through different acts and amendments.

While many of the solutions for water pollution need to be applied on a broader macro-level for that individual, companies, and communities can have a significant and responsible impact on the water quality. Companies, factories have to dispose of leftover chemicals and containers properly as per the product instructions. Farmers also have to reduce the use of nitrates and phosphates from fertilizers, pesticides, and contamination of groundwater.

The Swachh Bharat Mission of the government had led to reduced groundwater contamination. Under the Namami Ganga program, the government has initiated several major projects to clean Ganga. Along with all these steps, conservation of water is the very basic and important step towards water conservation and should be followed globally, treatment of sewage before their disposal in the water bodies and using environment-friendly products that do not form toxins when dissolved in water. These are some small steps that have to be taken into consideration by every human being.

As we all know, “Water is life’s matter and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.” We have to save water. We must keep the water clean. If everyone will follow their responsibility against water to protect it from getting polluted then it will be easy to get clean and healthy drinking water. Clean water is a must for us and our kids' present, future, and healthy environment.

We cannot just live with contaminated waters filled with toxins and no oxygen. We cannot see our wildlife being destroyed and therefore, immediate steps have to be taken by groups of people to first clean the already contaminated water bodies and then keep a check on all the surrounding water bodies. Small steps by every individual can make a huge difference in controlling water pollution.

Do not use toilets as Bin, minimum use of detergents, pesticides & fertilizers. Promote trash properly, promote sewage treatment and management.

Conserve water, promote environmentally safe products, promote greenery, support green-oriented products, promote recyclable and reusable options that don’t promote plastic.

Dispose of used oils at its collection points, pickup Pet waste, promote organic farming, report to the local authorities any pollution activities.

Install water-efficient household appliances and participate in the Prevention of water pollution activities or save water from pollution campaigns.

I have always loved my town as it has many lakes, rivers, and forests. One day, as I walked along the river that ran through my village, I couldn't help but notice the strange colours swirling in the water. It wasn't the crystal clear blue that I was used to seeing. Instead, the water was a murky brown, and there was a strong, foul smell emitting from it. Curious, I decided to investigate further. I made my way down to the riverbank and peered into the water, trying to get a closer look at what was causing the strange colours and smells. As I looked more closely, I saw that strange foam bubbles were floating on the surface of the water.

Suddenly, I heard a noise behind me and turned to see a group of people rushing towards the river. They were shouting and waving their arms, and I could see the panic on their faces. I quickly realised that something was very wrong. As the group reached the river, they saw that the water was teeming with dead fish floating belly up on the surface. The smell of rotten fish was overpowering, and it was clear that something had seriously polluted the river.

After a thorough investigation, it was determined that a local factory had been releasing toxic chemicals into the river, causing widespread pollution and destruction of the ecosystem. I was shocked and saddened by this discovery, and I knew it would take a lot of work to clean up the river and restore it to its former glory.

1) Urban Sewage

The sewage from urban settlements is usually treated with chemicals and then released into the water bodies after mixing with fresh water. 2) Industrial Waste

Oil is non-soluble in water and being lighter in density, floats over it. Though the oil spills have been considerably reduced in the past decades, the incidents of oil spills still happen. For instance, in 2018, there were 137 oil spills in the United States alone. Out of 137 spills, 65 were reported as the maximum potential spills, releasing gallons of oil into the water.

5) Landfills Leakage

Landfills are the huge piles of garbage usually found on the outskirts of a city or urban settlement. The garbage from the landfills leaks into the water bodies with rain or reaches with the wind, resulting in their contamination. They contain a large amount of several contaminants harmful for aquatic life.

Industrial effluents include chemicals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. When these chemicals reach the human body through the consumption of fish, they may cause irritation, insomnia, and nervous disorders, which may also affect the brain.

Thermal pollution increases the temperature of the water which in turn reduces the level of oxygen in the water. This results in the death of many species of fish. Oil drilling and oil spills contaminate seawater which may also lead to the death of marine organisms.

Measures should be taken to prevent water pollution before the situation goes out of control. Anti-pollution scientific methods should be devised.

Sources of water pollution which cause an inflow of pollutants over a large area are known as non-point sources. Example: Runoff from agricultural fields. The following steps should be taken to reduce water pollution from non-point sources:

Two separate drainages should be built for sewage and rainwater so that both rainwater and sewage do not overflow together.
Nitrogen-fixing plants should be planted to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers.
Agrochemicals and pesticides should be used judiciously to prevent them from draining into a water body.
Efforts should be made to prevent the runoff of manures.
Bio fertilisers and biopesticides should be used.

Sources that discharge pollutants to only one specific site are known as point sources. Example: Discharge of effluents from the factory into a river. To prevent pollution from point sources, it is essential to first treat wastewater before it is discharged. Laws should be made carrying strict punishment for discharging untreated wastewater into any water body.

Life without water is impossible and no one can survive without water. Most of the part of earth is covered with water. Almost 70% of the surface of the earth consists of water.

Water is essential to maintain the ecological balance on this planet. Water is used for many purposes such as drinking, cooking, household activities, for manufacturing and industrial purposes, etc. Millions of liters of water is needed daily worldwide for their usage and survival.

Despite water being so important for everyone, we are seeing that water is being wasted in a large way and water bodies are being polluted every now and then . It is a sad thing that even though earth is covered with water and there are lots of natural water resources, still we are facing scarcity of pure and fresh water and are struggling to get water for our basic necessities.

Water pollution is becoming a rising issue these days. With more and more industries and scientific development, we humans are not respecting the natural resources which are depleting at a faster rate. Industrial waste, garbage and other waste byproducts are being dumped into the water causing harm to the water resources.

Many pollutants are present in the water which cause pollution and deteriorate the quality of water. Tons of trash, such as plastic, steel, aluminium and many other items are being thrown into the water bodies which affect the quality of water and also harm the species present in the water, as they do not decompose and stay in the water for a long time.

Water scarcity and water pollution is a social and alarming issue. We can see so many people buy water for drinking and other purposes instead of using water from so many water bodies present on the surface of earth.

Urbanization is another cause for depletion of water resources, with more and more demand for construction activities many water bodies are being cut out and buildings are raised on it.

As the population increases, there is scarcity of water for daily usage.

There are many other causes which lead to water pollution. Causes such as dumping of garbage, washing in lakes, etc which releases soap water and other chemicals into the water affects the water quality. Polluting water harms the whole environment, plants and animals die due to non-availability of water for their consumption.

Deforestation is another major reason for water scarcity, trees help in shading the water bodies, thus preventing evaporation, cutting of trees accuse water to evaporate at a rapids rate. Soil erosion and effect in water cycle is also due to deforestation.

Many aquatic animals die every year due to harmful chemicals and garbage present in the water. Plants and trees die due to scarcity of water and due to the chemical present in the water.

Use of fertilisers, insecticides and other harmful chemicals also affect the seawater and other water resources. Scarcity of water is an alarming issue. Water is not available for basic purposes too and it raises more during the summer season. Rise in water activities, water sports, swimming pools, etc are also a reason for water scarcity.

Polluting the water and scarcity of water is due to luxurious way of life by many people around the globe. It is necessary to stop water pollution as it is leading to many dire consequences.

Utilising water in a responsible is the need of the hour. Preventing garbage dumping and industrial waste from gouging into the water bodies is necessary to protect water from many contaminants and pollutants. Planting more trees would lead to proper water cycle and more rains which would stop droughts and drying up of water bodies such as lakes and oceans and give fresh water frequently.

Access to fresh and basic water is necessity and right of every living being. Water pollution causes a lot of diseases in humans such as digestion problems, intestinal problems, etc.

Many NGOs and government agencies are spreading awareness to save the water and water resources on this planet. Rainwater harvesting, turning off taps when not in use, utilising used water for planting trees are some of the ways to save water.

Water pollution can cause very harmful and bad impacts on life. It has caused many dangerous diseases that even kill humans or may paralyze them and damage their nervous system. Water pollution cause may kill the aquatic animals, and their dead bodies often increase the water pollution and spread bad smells over the surrounding, which is very dangerous for all of us.

We have to take steps to prevent or reduce water pollution to save life on earth by reducing its harmful effects. We already know that we don’t have enough clean water to drink and use. So it is our major responsibility to conserve water in the event of a greater extinction. We have to make more sewage treatments so that water released from the industries is treated before release, which reduces the toxins from water. England won’t adopt EU river pollution rules for pharma and cosmetics firms

Campaigners say government is failing to match major step forward as bloc prepares to introduce ‘polluter pays’ principle

New EU rules which introduce “polluter pays” principles to get pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies to pay for the pollution they cause in rivers will not be adopted by the government in England, as campaigners say the country is falling behind.

Lawmakers in Europe have signed off on an update to the urban waste water treatment (UWWT) directive, which is to further tighten restrictions on pollution. More nutrients from agricultural waste and sewage will have to be removed from waterways under the new rules. It also for the first time applies standards to micropollutants such as chemicals from pharmaceutical waste.

The update also introduces a crucial measure called “extended producer responsibility”, which means cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies will be asked to contribute to the cost of treating wastewaters if they are causing chemical pollution. The EU has specifically said it wishes to implement a “polluter pays” principle. This means costs for cleaning chemicals out of waterways will be partially covered by the responsible industry, rather than by water bills or public budgets. The new rule will require the most polluting industries to pay at least 80% of the cost for micropollutant removal.

The EU said this would “lead to cleaner rivers, lakes, groundwater and seas all around Europe”.

Chloe Alexander, a senior campaigner at the CHEM Trust, said: “The UK must urgently mirror EU measures to make polluters pay to remedy the problems they cause, as well as to ban the use of harmful chemicals at source, before they harm our health and pollute our environment. Currently, the UK public and environment continue to be exposed to a growing number of harmful chemicals that are getting banned in EU countries.

“The British public should not have to foot the bill for the huge potential costs of cleaning up our environment from chemical pollution caused by poor chemical management.”

England and Wales could end up lagging behind when it comes to water pollution, as other parts of the UK will adopt extra regulations on micropollutants. Northern Ireland, under the Windsor framework, has to adhere to urban waste water treatment updates as it is obliged to have some of the same environmental rules as the Republic of Ireland. The Guardian understands that the Scottish government is proposing to adopt similar regulations to UWWT as it is trying to keep regulations in line with the EU so the country could more easily rejoin the bloc in the event of Scottish independence.

Michael Nicholson, the head of environmental policy at the Institute for European Environmental Policy, said: “If the updated EU law on wastewater treatment comes into force in the next few months, as is likely, this would be a major step forward in tackling pollution from cosmetic and pharmaceutical products which enter our rivers and seas and endanger public health and aquatic life alike. It would also open up a significant divergence with the approach taken to clean wastewaters in the UK. The UK should take note and strongly consider following suit.”

The new rules will also introduce systematic monitoring of microplastics in the inlets and outlets of urban wastewater treatment plants as well as in the sludge, and there will be monitoring of “forever chemicals” such as PFAS. There are no plans for England to introduce any such compulsory monitoring at present.

Libby Peake, a senior policy analyst at Green Alliance, said: “The UK government acted quickly to ban some microbeads from wash-off cosmetics in 2018 and was rightly applauded for it. But that ban, which the government still refers to as world-leading, contained some gaping holes that plenty of microplastics continue to slip right through.

“In fact, the partial ban covers less than 10% of intentionally added microplastics. People will be surprised to learn that all sorts of cosmetics – lipstick, suncream, and so on – can still legally contain plastics in the UK, as can medicinal products, paints, detergents, and fertilisers. The EU is moving to ban a far greater range of these insidious plastic particles, and the UK should quickly follow suit.”

A UK government spokesperson said: “We already have a polluter pays principle in law under the Environment Act. Many of our statutory schemes also equal or go beyond EU targets.

“On top of this we are taking tough action to hold polluters to account, quadrupling water company inspections, fast-tracking £180m investment to cut sewage spills and changing the law so that polluters face unlimited penalties from the Environment Agency, which are quicker and easier to enforce.”

The Thames has become a ‘national disgrace’ – so we tested the water to see how bad it really is

I t’s strange, really, that one of our most beloved, lyrical books about English rivers should have been written in the dying embers of the Victorian era. When Kenneth Grahame was writing about a rat and a mole passing their days “simply messing about in boats” – inspired by the walks he took with his son by the River Thames and its tributaries in Berkshire – the waters that flowed past his house and on to London were a cesspool often blamed for the diseases that ripped through the city, characterising that age as one of filth and sickness.

Microbiologist Arthur Hassall perhaps put it best when writing about life on the banks of the Thames in 1850: “A portion of the inhabitants of the metropolis are made to consume, in some form or another, a portion of their own excrement, and moreover, to pay for the privilege.” You feel Mr Hassall would be disappointed to know that 174 years later, very little has changed.

Some 30 miles downstream from where Grahame wrote Wind in the Willows , four boats will carve a path through those same waters on Saturday, fighting to be the first to reach the finish line by Chiswick Bridge. The 18 men and 18 women cutting through the water will of course have their eyes on that coveted Boat Race trophy. But they’ll also be trying their damndest not to fall in. Why? Because the water is filled with sewage .

It has been a very bad week for Thames Water. The beleaguered company faces a standoff with its regulator and finds itself in a race to secure funding after its investors pulled out of a planned £500 million lifeline, all amid claims the water quality in London and the South East is worse than ever thanks to sewage overflows from its outlets. That this has coincided with one of the highlights of the British sporting calendar, which just happens to take place very much in Thames Water’s manor, has only added insult to injury.

Sean Bowden, coach of the Oxford University Boat Club declared the water quality in British rivers “a national disgrace” as E.coli levels detected in the Thames reached alarming levels. The Environment Agency (EA) revealed 3.6 million hours of sewage discharges had been made into British rivers last year, constituting a record high.

In the Thames, surveys found an average of 2,869 E.coli colony forming units per 100ml of water (almost three times the recommended limit) in samples taken around Hammersmith Bridge, where Saturday’s boat race will be staged. The Telegraph did its own test on Thursday and found levels of E.coli at 20 times the threshold merely for “sufficient” quality bathing water, and almost eight times that for intestinal enterococci, suggesting a strong presence of human effluent in the river at Putney at that time.

“It’s a concern,” Bowden told Telegraph Sport this week. “And I’m really glad the papers are pursuing the water companies on it. I am right with them. It’s a national disgrace, isn’t it? ”

He added: “Why would you want to put your kids out in that?”

Well quite, or indeed your cox. The traditional cox-dunking ceremony at the end of the race is likely to be off . The organisers have put new guidelines in place highlighting the “risks of entering the water”, advising rowers to cover up “open wounds”, wash their hands regularly and pay a visit to the cleansing station in the finish area.

It’s worth noting that the health of the Thames doesn’t just hang on the sewage spills. Fertiliser, pesticide and faecal matter run-off from the land – “diffuse agricultural pollution” as it is known – is also culpable. According to local supply company South East Water, pesticide concentration in the Lower Thames area has breached Drinking Water Standards (DWS) recently, with high concentrations of herbicides flufenacet and propyzamide being found in the water. These readings were likely to have been exacerbated by heavy rainfall.

It is sewage, however, which is drawing the nation’s ire at present. EA data shows the number of hours of Thames Water spilled sewage increased by more than 160 per cent between 2022 and 2023, with 196,414 hours of spills recorded last year.

Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats in November 2023 showed Thames Water had spilled an equivalent of 29,000 Olympic swimming pools since 2020. Companies like Thames Water say overflows are essential in extreme circumstances (such as during periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall) for managing the flow of effluent through our ageing sewage systems. The argument being, wouldn’t you rather have sewage released in a controlled way into our waterways than backing up into your house? Campaigners say in reality they use overflow discharges much more frequently.

Thames Water was fined £35.7 million between 2017 and 2023 for pollution incidents. In 2023, it was fined £3.3 million for killing more than 1,400 fish by discharging untreated sewage into rivers.

In Britain, water companies have a shameful record when it comes to tackling spills, but Thames Water has come under particular scrutiny in the past month. It faced backlash over its commitment (or lack thereof) to tackling sewage issues, declining to join an industry-wide push to reduce pollution in our rivers. The Government announced £180 million would be spent by six water companies over a year to prevent more than 8,000 spills; Thames Water won’t be among those participating.

An examination of Thames Water’s own live sewage map is alarming. As we entered this Easter weekend, it was a sea of red exclamation points, each one alerting you to a storm overflow that is currently discharging, while the amber ones tell you where there has recently been a spill. Click on Thame, for example, a market town to the east of Oxford. “Our monitor indicated this storm overflow is currently discharging. This means there could be sewage in this section of the watercourse.” What does it feed into? Lashlake Stream. Any wild swimmers might want to avoid that particular spot over the bank holiday weekend.

Or what about Greenwich, in the epicentre of the capital? At 14:52 on Friday, the storm outlet there has been discharging for 44 hours 22 minutes and counting. It’s slightly better news for the Boat Race – the closest spill to the route is downriver at Wandsworth, and that was a brief five-hour job. Though it’s worth noting there was also a rather large spill upriver at Mogden this week. That one went on for 15 hours, well into the early hours of Friday morning. Here’s hoping the current has whipped any nasties out to Essex by Saturday afternoon.

Mogden is something of a key player in the great Thames Water debacle. The sewage treatment works there in west London collapsed in 2021, flooding nearby homes and gardens with foul-smelling water. “The river came up incredibly quickly. It engulfed the bottom of our garden and rushed up into the kitchen. It smelled strongly of sewage,” said local resident, Anna King.

It’s one of the biggest works in the UK, treating wastewater from over 2 million people. The year before, during a period of heavy rainfall, around 2 billion litres of raw sewage were released in just 48 hours. The company now has plans to use the plant as a so-called recycling scheme, which would lead to 100 million litres of water being taken from the river every day and 100 million litres of treated sewage put back.

A Thames Water spokesperson said: “Taking action to improve the health of rivers is a key focus for us and we want to lead the way with our transparent approach to data. We remain the only company to provide live alerts for all untreated discharges and this ‘near real-time’ data is available to customers as a map on our website.”

They added that they had experienced “higher than average long-term rainfall across London and the Thames Valley with groundwater levels exceptionally high for the time of the year”.

“We are working hard to make these discharges unnecessary and have published plans to upgrade over 250 of our sites.”

The Tideway Tunnel, a 24ft-wide tunnel running from Acton to Stratford, which is almost complete, is meant to take some of the pressure off. When open, its purpose is to prevent overspill into the river from more than 30 of 50 outlets. “London has forgotten the Thames,” Tideway Tunnel chief executive Andy Mitchell told The Telegraph in 2018. “Personally, I think it is unacceptable for our capital city river to be treated as an open sewer and that needs to change.”

Dubbed the Super Sewer, it’s to be a kind of second Thames – a new system to support the Victorian pipes designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette. In the 1860s, those pipes were meant to service a city of two million. Nine million now live in the capital. That’s over four times the volume of effluent. When it rains and the sewers flood, the excess is flushed into the river via a network of overflows.

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race teams may want to pray for fair weather on Saturday morning, then, if for no other reason than the winning cox may not appreciate a celebratory dunk in a pool of sewage overspill.
