Describe your favourite toy./Talk about a toy you liked in your childhood

When it comes to toys I had in my childhood, the collection was humongous. Everything about my toys makes me nostalgic. In my point of view, childhood is definitely a golden phase and the memories we create during this time hold a special place in our hearts. On top of that, there is nothing more precious than a favourite childhood toy.

Since I was the only girl child in my entire clan, my family had bestowed me with a plethora of toys, including dolls, building blocks, stuffed animals, puzzles, and many more. However, out of all, the one that was close to my heart was a barbie doll set that my father gifted me on my 5th birthday.

I vividly remember I had gone to somebody’s birthday party with my parents. There, I saw a Barbie doll, which looked attractive and enigmatic. I was fascinated with her clothes, shoes, hair, and everything else. I went to my father and told him that I wanted the same set on my birthday.

After a few months, when my birthday arrived, my father stepped inside my room with a large box that was gift wrapped. I was awestruck at the idea of receiving a barbie set. When I opened it, it was nothing similar to what I had seen but even more charismatic and bigger. Also, this barbie set came with more accessories than what I had seen at that house.

This house set became my pride possession. From thereon, whenever my cousins and friends would come over, we would play with this barbie doll. When I look back at that time, I realize how simple toys used to be our valuable things. I had a whale of a time playing around with my barbie. And, I am proud to say that I still have it intact at my house.

Sample Answer 2

I remember when I was young, I was keen on watching the cartoon called “The many adventures of Winnie the Pooh”, so much that I kept pestering my father for the stuffed bear Winnie the Pooh. Finally, my father gave me one as a present for my 6th birthday. When I got this toy, I jumped for joy and paid no attention to my other presents.

This stuffed bear was, incredibly, identical to the character in the cartoon I had watched. He also had a short red shirt and was holding a jar of honey which was his favorite food. Therefore, I felt as if he had come from the movie.

Since then, I considered him my closest friend and I couldn’t go anywhere without him, even when I went to sleep. Every day, I talked with the bear and told him about my daily routine. Unfortunately, I lost the bear at an amusement center, which made me cry for almost a week. At that time, I felt like I had lost a good friend who I could share everything with. At present, whenever I watch this cartoon or see any photos of Winnie the Pooh, all the wonderful memories about him are brought back. Thanks to the bear, I experienced a happy childhood.

Introducing a toy

I was very  fond of toys in my childhood . It was my favourite activity to spend time with my collection of cars, dirt bikes, toy guns etc.

Here, I would love to describe a toy that made my childhood memorable.

• My best-loved toy is a PlayStation which has lots of free video games.
• My fondness and love for gaming started when I was only 3 years old.
• This is when my life was filled with an obsession with computers, consoles, puzzles and toy games.
• I received this toy on my 14 th birthday.
• I had always wanted a video game ever since I saw it at the supermarket.
• So my parents fulfilled their promise on that day.
• When I woke up, I got the gift on by my bedside.
• I must tell you, it was the best birthday present ever.
• I still remember how crazily I called my friends to play with it.
• I invited a bunch of friends over and had a video game party.
• After my father made the necessary connections, the first video game was ready to play.
• It was Pitfall . This was a wonderful game where I played as a little man in green pants known as Harry.
• I spent my time jumping over scorpions, using vines to swing over logs, and trying to avoid being eaten by crocodiles.
• I felt super excited on that day.
• One could see the expression of happiness on my face every time I was holding my toy.
• I loved being able to play whatever games I wanted and spent hours doing so.

In the end, I would say that it is one of the childhood memories that I would never let go of. Even as an adult, I still think about my favourite toy.

7-8 Band Answer

I had many toys in my childhood. My favourite childhood toy, without a doubt, has to be a remote-controlled car. I got it from a McDonald’s restaurant under their “Happy Meals” campaign. In fact, I desperately wanted to collect all the toys from each series in Happy Meals.

I vividly remember it was packed in a beautiful yellow box when the restaurant staff gave it to me. The toy was red in colour and I used to spend hours playing with it. I liked this toy because I could take it with me everywhere and slept with it too. There was also a music system in my car which played my favourite rhymes.

The car was so fascinated that I discharged the batteries in just a few hours. I called my friends to play with it. They all cherished playing with the car. As I recall, once I took it to school and my mother yelled at me when I came back home.

Also, I was very possessive about my car and never used to let anyone touch it. I have never considered offering it to my younger cousins. I remember playing with it non stop for days and it has always been my favourite of all time toys.

However, now it’s lost somewhere, but neither lost in my memories nor my heart.

The girls’ toys are differentiated with physical attractiveness, nurturance, and domestic skill such as Barbie dolls, ballerina costumes, makeup, jewellery etc. Whereas, boys’ toys are rated as aggressive, exciting, and somewhat dangerous such as wrestlers, soldiers, guns, etc. As boys and girls play with different kinds of toys, it is interesting to see the impact of these differences in their play experiences.

2. Do you think toys really help in children’s development?

Technology always has a deep influence on the type of toys children play with. Most toys now have computer chips, memory, voice recognition, and interactive connectivity that has completely changed the landscape of play. 

4. Have we lost our hand skills such as sewing?

In the race of modernisation, we’ve certainly lost our Sewing hand skills. Today, there are college-educated, smart women who have no hand skills whatsoever. I think people lack the patience and self-discipline to make any progress in learning skills such as sewing.

5. What toys are popular with kids in India today?

6. In general, do children today have many toys?

Most families have too many toys in India . Children are easily overwhelmed with choice, and generally, a child who is unsure of what to play with often ends up playing with nothing at all. From my perspective, I think fewer toys allow children to love books, music, colouring, and painting. They can spend more time outside the house and engage in physical activities.

7. Do you think playing with electronic toys has a good influence on kids?

Indeed, electronic toys acquaint kids with new technology. I think good quality electronic toys do more than just entertain – they make learning fun by captivating children’s attention with colours, sounds and interactive elements.

8. Do you think there are some toys that are only suitable for girls and some that are only suitable for boys?

Some toys such as slot car racers, radio-controlled cars, electric trains, wrestling figures and video games are only suitable for boys. Whereas, Barbie dollhouse, Bellarina costume, Pink ice skates are some of the toys only suitable for girls.

9. Which do you think is better, for children to play with toy alone or with other kids?

I think playing alone is preferably better than playing with others due to the following reasons:

• Playing alone fosters imagination .
• It develops a strong sense of independence in children so that they don’t need anyone around to be happy.
• Playing by themselves brings a sense of calmness .
• Playing alone allows children to be creative without criticism from others.

10. Do you think parents should encourage their children to share their toys with other kids?

It is very important for parents to encourage the habit of sharing amongst their children. Sharing teaches children about compromise and fairness . They learn that if we give our toys to other kids, we can get their toys to play with in return. I feel that when parents  model good sharing  in the family, it gives their children an ideal example to follow.

11. How are toys today different to toys of the past?

There are many differences between toys from the past and present. Earlier toys were usually made from wood, metal, or cardboard and they were mostly handmade . Modern toys are made from plastic, nylon or foam and are produced in large factories. Toys from the past were often unsafe as some had sharp edges and were made from unsafe materials. But nowadays, there are strict rules in place to make sure toys are very safe to play with.

12. How do you think toys will change in the future?

As we imagine the future of play, there are plenty of factors that will influence its evolution. I think Artificial intelligence, 3D printing and augmented reality   are changing the ways new toys are being made and how we interact with them . I feel that smart toys will learn from children and provide an adaptive and more responsive play experience in the future.

I would give a child an interactive globe as a present. It would let them explore more about the world while sitting at home. They would download the app to learn fun facts about the planet, cultures and ecosystems on the planet, play games and go on scavenger hunts around the globe.

RC Cars, Barbie dolls, Storybooks, T-shirts, Shoes and Watches are the kind of gifts that parents give to their young children. They anticipate the desires and act in a way that serves the child’s best interests.

15. Is it good to give children too many presents such as too many toys?

I think for children, an overload of playthings and toys can be overwhelming and distracting . They pick up one toy, drop it, and move on. So they don’t learn to appreciate their possessions or feel a responsibility towards them. I believe the children can be too much creative when they have fewer toys to play with.

Well, it brings back memories to discuss about toys from my childhood. In my opinion, childhood is the best time in a person’s life, and memories from that time will always have a special place in my heart. Furthermore, what is more valuable than a childhood toy? 

What kind of toy is it?

I was lucky enough to have a wide variety of toys, including dolls, stuffed animals, building blocks, puzzles, homemade toys, and many more, because I was the centre of attention for my family. However, a remote-controlled car, which my father gave me for my eighth birthday, was one object that I had very special memories of.

When did you receive it?

I can still clearly recall when I went to my cousin’s house and saw this remote-control car. Its intriguing colour, and sound astounded me. "I wish I could have something like this to play with at home," I first said. After a few months, I noticed a big package in my room wrapped like a birthday gift. And as I opened the package, I got to know that it was my favourite remote-controlled car. I was over the moon to see my favourite toy. 

How did you play it?

After opening the toy, my father and I started assembling all the pieces and inserted a cell in the remote. Then we started moving the car with the help of the remote. My toy car's lights and music are still vivid in my memory. I played with this battery-powered toy car occasionally and was excited about it.

How did you feel about it?

Despite my protective nature, I shared this item with my friends and siblings. My social and physical abilities both improved as a result. Unlike kids in the modern period, we didn't have the luxury of playing with battery-operated toys or hi-fi electronic toys.

This item, in particular, holds a special place in my heart because it was the first gift my dad gave me without my asking, which boosted my imagination and inventiveness.

All I could do as a child was love to play with toys. That's why my parents and other close family members give me my favourite gifts for my birthday every year.

What kind of toy is it?/ When did you receive it?

Upon my fifth birthday, my mother gave me a soft toy of  "Doraemon and Shizuka." My happiness is still fresh in my mind. I was bouncing with happiness and giving my mum hugs for the most wonderful present ever. However, I did not let my cousins touch this Doraemon and Shizuka toy. 

In my early years, I loved the "Chota Bheem'' cartoon. I used to watch this show on the Hungama channel every day. After watching that show, you ultimately come to adore each Doremon character. Consequently, my mother surprised me with Doremon and Shizukal on my birthday. Although, I used to like Shizuka more than Doremon. However, my mother gave me the two toys.

I adored watching Doremon and Shizuka television characters. Thus, the toys held a lot of sentimental value for me. I was also motivated by Shizuka’s appearance. I wear Chutki-style makeup a lot, and I wear single ponytails. 

As an adult, I realised how obsessed I was with the toy. However, it was the only toy I truly enjoyed at the time. I still keep the doll in my bedside cabinet, and seeing it always brings back a lot of emotions.

A toy is an item that a youngster can use for play. Childhood is a time when toys are vital and evoke many memories. Despite the wide variety of toys available, everyone has a preference. 

I’ve always been attracted to electronic gadgets. With so many free video games, the PlayStation is the item I enjoy playing with the most. I first became fond of and fell in love with this game when I was thirteen years old. One of my friends had this game. He used to proudly declare that he owned the game, and I felt inferior because I didn't.  

I was crazy about this game. When I requested my parents to buy it for me when we went shopping, they said no. However, on my birthday, he came and surprised me with the same PlayStation which I demanded on that day. Among all the gifts I received, I was somewhat taken aback by the one my father gave me. 

I generally connect this PlayStation to my television and then play during weekends or holidays. 

I was extremely excited and happy to play that game since I had been waiting for this from a very long time. Apart from this, I also shared it with my friends who did not have it. As it made me happy as well. 

I used to play with this toy all the time. I used to be in a lot of trouble from my mother because I used to play video games late at night.

Answer : Hand sewing is absolutely a thing of the past. In a large manner, sewing machines have become popular. But there are still people who sew by hand. These can be pedalled with the foot or the hand. When my mother sews, she has to operate her fully automated computerised sewing machine manually. 

Question : What toys are popular with kids in India today?

Answer : Many types of toys are popular with kids in India, such as robots, remote controls, controlled cars, kitchen toys, and even various puzzles that people and kids like to use in their daily lives because these toys include high-tech machinery and technology that students like to interact with and use to improve their ability and skills, and kids like to explore the car that the toys contain and use as an instrument. 

Question : In general, do children today have many toys?

Answer : Yes, every child in this modern society has an abundance of toys that they like to play with all the time. Wealthier families, on the other hand, like to give their kids a variety of toys that they enjoy and play with all the time. However, children in middle-class families may not have as many toys as they would like because these middle-class or low-class families find it difficult to manage their budget. I believe that this is the kind of situation that would occur in this country. 

Question : Do you think playing with electronic toys has a good influence on kids?

Answer : Yes, children's playing with electronic devices has many positive effects on their lives. First of all, when kids play with electronic toys, they form an idea of how to use the product for the first time, even though they would instead read the handbook that comes with it. They also follow all the instructions and put all the electronic items together using their imagination, which helps kids develop more creative and cognitive skills quickly. In addition, playing electronic games raises students' learning levels because the toys contain high-tech components that kids enjoy learning a lot about. 

Question : Do you think some toys are only suitable for girls and some that are only suitable for boys?

Answer : Yes, I agree toys have a distinct meaning for each gender. Girls generally enjoy playing with doll sets and plush toys, but boys prefer to play with cars and firearms. However, certain toys are suitable for both, like puzzles, video games, etc. 

Question : Which do you think is better, for children, to play with toys alone or with other kids?

Answer : In my opinion, children should share things, including toys, with their friends because playing with toys can strengthen the bonds between them and their peers because they expose them to different kinds of lessons and experiences that are useful in their daily lives. 

Question : Do you think parents should encourage their children to share their toys with other kids?

Answer : Yes, without a doubt. Sharing toys with others teaches kids to share things with others, which is just a fun way to learn valuable life lessons. It also presents a variety of opportunities and challenges that people find enjoyable and enrich their daily lives. In addition, parents and teachers should teach us all the value of sharing because it is a very important life lesson. 

Question : How are toys today different to toys of the past?

Answer : The toys of today and those of the past differ greatly. Most modern toys are manufactured in factories using materials like plastic, nylon, or foam. Whereas, because some of the vintage toys had sharp edges and were manufactured of dangerous materials, they were frequently dangerous. 

Question : How do you think toys will change in the future?

Answer : Nobody can forecast the future, but from what I can tell, kids want to play with electronic toys exclusively. Every toy from the past will eventually become an electronic toy. More electronic devices are visible in the stores.

Childhood toys play a significant role in the lifestyle of the children even that makes the lifestyle of the children is incredible and interesting children like to play with their toys whole the time and here I would like to talk a toy which I liked to play when I was in toddler I remember vividly when I was in a six standard even I got a gift from my father on my birthday so it was a Remote control car when I saw this car I felt over the moon. because I had never received that kind of gift in my childhood time apart from that I offered to play all the time with this toy and i didn’t like to share that car with anyone else it was a fully automatic car and came with remote control and there were two battery put inside the car then worked automatically even the overall shape of that car was quite mesmerising. I always used my quality time with that toy so when I also got that gift to my father and I also gave promise I never use that gift all the time but I failed and breached my promise myself because this car was very fascinated so I liked to spend my time to play this car even this car also had very incredible features even its automatically changed direction with artificial intelligence even any obstacles came into the part of car automatically changed its position into another way so I also showed that gift with my friends but I didn’t like to use that gift by my friends moreover I knew very well all my friend circle got jealous with me because I had very advance car so that was the gift which I got from my father on my sixth birthday. seriously it was a beautiful gift in my life even now I also preserved in my guestroom but this car not able to in a working condition because it’s quite old and all the machinery inside get damage so that is a gift which I got a certain way and I often to play all the time when I was in kinder garden.

Answer- According to my perspective, I would like to share my opinion children must share things and toys with other friends because playing with toys can enhance their relationship bond and also develop stronger bonding with them because they learn various kinds of lessons and face exposure which is useful in their day to day life.

Question 10:- Do you think parents should encourage their children to share their toys with other children?

Answer- Yes, definitely if children share their toys they would learn the habit of sharing things among each other it is nothing but learning with fun and would help them to learn good lessons of life it also gives numerous opportunities and challenges which people like to enhance their day to day life apart from that every teachers and parent need to give us all lessons about to sharing a thing because they learn a new kind of things from them.

Answer- Yes, I would like to give a present to my child in future there is a kind of automatic robot which include artificial intelligence apart from that I will provide all the high-tech machinery which my children alike interact with themselves and also enhance their knowledge and ability into the upper level.

Answer- The problem with having too many toys research shows fever toys at a time needs a better quality playtime for toddlers allowed them to focus on one toy at a time, build Constitution skills and play more creativity another issue with having lots of toys in play is that we intend to place less on them.

Introduction :

Toys play an imperative role in a child’s life. Although I used to play with numerous toys in my childhood, one toy was special to me.

What was the toy? and Who gave it to you?

The toy was a remote-controlled helicopter . On the occasion of my sixth birthday, my father gifted it. It was black. The striking feature was its design which was not only stylish but also unique.

It was a limited edition helicopter. Since I lived in a small town back then, it was not available at the local shops.

Once my dad had gone to Singapore for a business trip, he bought it from there. After getting this gift, I stopped playing with other toys.

Its flying range was stupendous, it could fly up to 50 metres with tremendous ease.

Once it broke down while landing, that day was a dreadful day of my life. Seeing my plight, my father had repaired it, and it flew again.

This toy helped me to widen my friend circle. Because whenever I used to go the big playground of my town to fly it, all passerby’s would come and look at it. Many of those became my bosom friends.

Its battery life was superb. At one charge, it used to run for 2 hours.

How often did you play with it?

Initially, I used to play with it daily. It was a heavy-duty machine, that’s why it flew high for two years. After that its performance had declined and finally it ceased to run when I was ten years old.

So from the age of six to ten, I used to fly it daily.

Introduction

It is intuitively true that children’s life thrives primarily on toys for fun and entertainment.

Although I had numerous toys in my childhood, one was special to me.

What was the toy?

The toy was a laptop with umpteen features. It had numerous features. The first and foremost benefit was that it helped me learn alphabets recognition and pronunciation.

Furthermore, I learnt to play musical notes on it and as an adult, I can play various musical instruments. The credit for acquiring this skill goes to my toy laptop.

The best benefit that the laptop served was that it introduced me to the world of numbers and languages. As mathematics was a boring subject for me in my budding years, this toy helped me understand the basics.

 Moreover, by playing racing games on my laptops toy, I developed sensory-motor skills in myself. So when I started to learn car driving, the prior knowledge I had helped me do it comfortably.

Another notable benefit that I got was the significant development of Intelligent quotient and problem-solving skills. By playing mind games on my laptop toy, I started solving complex issues in games adroitly . And that knowledge helps me whenever I get into a complex situation.

Who gave it to you?

When I had turned seven, my parents gifted it to me.

Initially, I used to play with it for half an hour every day, but once I got a knack for it, I started using it for three to four hours every day.

There is no denying this conviction that the childhood of a person pivots around toys, hence children leave no stone unturned to convince their parents to buy a boatload of toys for them.

  7. Do you believe playing with electronic toys has a good influence on children?

In my opinion, playing with electronic toys is a prudent approach because it helps them understand the mechanical process used to manufacture toys. Moreover, it instils confidence in them for using mechanical products and their vocabulary also get enhanced.

Toys? That’s going back a bit . If you mean the soft toys you get when you’re very small, I can’t remember them at all but I guess the one toy I had when I was a kid that stands out in my memory above all the others was this toy race track 

I think I must have been 8 or 9 at the time. It was for my birthday, I know that. I remember it was wrapped up in gift wrapping paper and I carefully unwrapped it in front of them.  The look on my face when I saw what it probably gave away how happy I was . It was in a big box and came complete with a set of four little brightly-coloured racing cars, though only two could race on the track at any one time. My parents weren’t the kind to lash out on expensive toys for me or to spoil me with too many treats, so this was something special for me. 

It wasn’t really the kind of toy you can play with on your own.  For a start, you have to set up the track, putting the straights and bends pieces together that make up the track, you could do in different ways in fact. So, I played mostly with my dad and sometimes with friends who came around. With my dad especially, we used to imagine each car was driven by one of the famous Formula I drivers of the day, and we would race as fast as possible using the simple remote to speed up and slow down. 

I suppose in a way that it was a kind of learning tool in that it helped teach you hand–brain coordination through using the remote control and judging speed and handling the bends and so on. I mean, my parents always seemed to be giving me educational toys , a game which helped you with basic arithmetical calculations – that was when I was about 5 – a chess set a little later and lots of Legos to build up my construction skills and stretch my imagination too. 

I loved playing with it, especially because it meant I could spend time, what do they call it these days. “quality time ” with my dad because he was always busy at work during the week and maybe because he used to let me win the race most of the time. I was talking to my mother by phone the other day. She never throws anything out and told me it was still around somewhere and that she’d like to hand it down to her grandchildren one day.

Describe a toy you liked in your childhood.

I would like to speak about the most favourite toy, I enjoyed playing with in my childhood and that is my set of Lego. Though my parents bought me a model aero plane, train and superheroes, I rarely played with them. 

Lego is a set of building blocks and a child of any age can build any shapes or structures with it. I vividly remember staring at a Lego set on display in a mall when we had gone for an outing. My father might have noticed it and to my surprise, he gifted it to me on my sixth birthday and I have been a proud owner ever since. 

Building different structures with Lego became my favorite pastime. Basically, you have blocks of different shapes that need to be interlocked together to build something. No sooner, I learnt to build structures, then I saw my dreams taking shape. I discarded all my other toys. I’d build all kinds of things, from towers to trucks. On weekends especially, I would proudly show off my building skills to my cousins who would come over to my place. I am pretty sure that this obsession led me to develop my creativity. In fact, I can proudly say that my engineering skills got wings from my Lego adventures. I consider myself fortunate to have spent my childhood playing with such creative toys and pity the modern-day kids who tend to become couch potatoes by spending their free time playing video games.

Vocabulary:

• Interlock - To join some parts firmly together, especially by fitting one part into another
• Set - A group of similar things that belong together, or are needed for a particular activity, particularly a game. 
• show off- (phrasal verb)- display someone or something that is a source of pride.
• Vividly- in an intensely deep or bright manner.
• Discarded- get rid of (someone or something) as no longer useful or desirable. 
• Obsession- an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person's mind.

1. what kind of toys are suitable for different age groups.

Toys are more than just playthings, though, and while they should be fun, they should also be age-appropriate, stimulating, and safe. Parents, I think, should set a limit on buying electronic toys and video games. Irrespective of age, the toys should inspire the child to be creative and spontaneous and not be passive.

2. How are toys beneficial for children?

As I mentioned, the most beneficial toys are the ones which stimulate the child’s creativity. It is through toys that children get their first opportunity to create, build and even destroy. The hidden talents of children can be identified by giving them the right playthings.

3. What are the differences between toys that girls like and the preference of boys?

Well, I believe that children below the age of six do not show much preferences when it comes to toys. After this phase, I would say boys mostly prefer to play with action toys and girls go with dolls. For instance, most of the boys love cars whereas girls would grab a Barbie doll if they are given a choice.

4. Does technology have an influence on toys?

Almost all modern-day toys have technology integrated in them. Just as we have smart gadgets, we see smart toys like miniature robots and sensor-controlled toys. These toys have speech recognition software, touch sensors, and can be networked together with other smart toys or a PC or mobile phone.

5. Parents don’t spend much time with their children and instead give toys. Is it good enough?

Parents, in my opinion, should realise that no smart toy can replace the love and bonding that only a parent can give to a child. They need to make time in spite of their busy schedule to be with the chid, develop a strong bond by taking care of the child’s needs.

Important IELTS Exam Resources

Toys are elixirs of life for children, stimulating their imagination and fostering fascinating make-believe worlds that they spend hours in. As a child, even I was no different. My parents also gave me the platform to dream and innovate, with everything from fun puzzles to toy animals, bridge and railway sets, miniature warriors, and much more. My uncle was posted in the Indian Navy, and he once brought me an entire toy set from Japan. This comprised fascinating Japanese figures and animals along with wonderful trees and everything I needed to create the landscape. While these toys kept me engaged fruitfully for hours, the toy I liked best was a blue Bentley car. 

This was gifted to me by my father after I won an inter-school junior drama competition. We were at the toy shop, and I fell in love with the glittering blue Bentley right away, with its circular headlamps and stretched-out body. I also liked the fact that it was emblazoned with the brand logo in silver. My father chose to gift it to me, and I have had it ever since. I proudly keep it displayed on my study shelf even today. I loved the blue Bentley for several reasons. Firstly, it stimulated my imagination; I could picture myself driving the car in real life and having a ball, pushing it around the entire house. Secondly, the car's design sparked a keen sense of aesthetics in me, something I harbor to date. Thirdly, the car was truly a special gift from my father. 

These factors combined to make it my most-loved toy in childhood. While I have had several amusements and playthings over the years, nothing quite compares to the good old Bentley.

Blessed is a child who has the good fortune to play with toys. Toys are not just amusements or recreations; they serve to foster imagination, creativity, critical thinking, and a keen sense of belonging/comfort among children. I have been fortunate enough to be pampered with the choicest toys in almost all existing market segments back then (as I realize today). However, nothing quite fascinated me more than my He-Man Toy, complete with his Battle Cat. These toys were potent enough to get me out of bed every morning for an hour before going to school. 

They possessed the magnetism necessary to lure me into spending hours imagining my beloved He-Man in multiple scenarios. Gradually, I acquired the Ram-Man character in the story, followed by Skeletor, the chief villain. Yet, He-Man and his Battle Cat remained my favorite pick for several reasons. The He-Man figurine was modeled expertly, resembling the character I had seen in comics and cartoons. The outfit was exquisite, and the sword spectacular. The Battle Cat had stunning red armor draping the green body with stripes. Together, they made for an arresting combination. I could spend hours just looking at them. When I was not playing with them, I kept them on display on my study table. 

For me, He-Man symbolized strength, power, and courage. It meant an escape from the mundane world of school and waking up early. Hence, I have always loved this toy set more than anything else in childhood. Sometime earlier, my nephew (who is still a baby) asked for the duo. I parted with them, albeit with a heavy heart. Little could I explain to him that he was taking not just a toy but a piece of my childhood back home.

Describe a Toy You Liked in Your Childhood: IELTS Speaking (3 Cue Cards With Example Answers)

You might get a childhood cue card topic in part two of your IELTS Speaking test. It could ask you to describe a toy you liked in your childhood.  

Let’s take a look at the best way to answer a question like this. And below you can also see three good example answers ( go straight to the answers here ).  

Different Kinds of Toys in English

To begin, here are the English words for some common different kinds of toys:

• Stuffed animal
• Toy soldier
• Toy dinosaur
• Cabbage Patch dolls
• Action figures
• Board games
• Skipping rope

• Rubik’s cube
• Star Wars figures

What You Can Say

Many students find this topic a little difficult to talk about for two minutes. For some of us, our childhoods were a long time ago.  

• But it is possible. Here are some things you can say:
• What kind of toy it was
• What it looked like
• What it was made from
• How old you were when you had it
• Why you liked that toy
• How that toy made you feel  
• Why it was important to you
• What kind of games you played with it
• Who you played games with
• Who gave you the toy
• When did you get it? (Christmas, birthday, vacation…)
• How long you had it for
• If the toy was like a friend to you
• Remember a time when you played a lot with that toy
• What you remember from that period of your life
• How your preferences in toys changed when you got older
• Other similar toys you liked and how they compared
• Anything else that comes to mind

Tell a Story Connected to the Toy

A great way to keep talking is to tell a short story (or two) connected to that toy somehow.  

For this question, you could tell a story about:

• Games you remember playing with that toy
• A special day (or time of your life) when you received that toy
• Why that toy was important to you (how it made you feel)
• A sad time when you lost or broke that toy
• What was happening in your life at that time
• Anything else you can remember  

Focus on the Past Tense

When asked about your childhood, you need to use good past tense.  

Don’t worry about using very clever grammar in part two (that will only distract you).

Just focus on your past tense. Practice telling stories about your childhood with good past simple tense and past continuous tense.  

You could also use ‘used to’ and ‘didn’t use to’ a lot in this answer. And also use ‘would’ for talking about games you would often play with your toy.  

The more you practice telling little stories, the better your past tense will become.  

Focus on Vocabulary

In part two, it’s best to focus on vocabulary too. Try to use some interesting band-seven words and phrases.  

A good way to do this is by using word groups.

A word group is a collection of words and idioms you prepared that can describe one aspect of someone or something.

You could prepare a ‘fun object’ word group for this toy question.  

This is a collection of words to describe any ‘fun’ thing. In this word group, you might have words like, ‘entertaining, interactive, amusing, a bundle of joy…’ and more.  

You could also have a ‘precious object’ word group to describe your toy. This would have words like, ‘special, treasured, beloved, irreplaceable, my prized possession, near and dear to my heart…’ and more.  

When you have prepared a word group like this, you can use it to answer many different part two questions. Learn more about word groups here .  

Example Answers

Here are three good answers to this question. See how they use different word groups and try to borrow some vocabulary and ideas for your own answer.

Childhood Toy Cue Card 1

Describe a toy you liked in your childhood.

You should say:

• Who gave it to you
• How you used to play with this toy

And say why this toy was important to you.

I’m going to talk about a teddy bear I loved when I was very little. When I was about six or seven, there was a toy that I treasured more than anything else . It was a small, stuffed animal that was given to me on my 6th or 7th birthday by my favorite aunt.  

You know, this toy was not just a plaything to me, it was my constant companion and friend . I t meant the world to me , and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything in the world . I really loved that teddy bear.  

The toy was a small, plush teddy bear that was incredibly soft to the touch . Its fur was a warm shade of brown, and its eyes were a bright, shiny black. I adored this toy from the moment I received it. It was special, important , and irreplaceable . I would take it with me everywhere I went , and it was always by my side when I needed comfort or company . I remember I would cuddle it when I felt lonely and it helped me feel better.  

I can even remember the day that I received the toy. I can remember it as if it were yesterday ! It was my birthday. Maybe my 6 th or 7 th birthday. And I was so excited to open presents. When I saw the teddy bear, I was overjoyed . I remember hugging it tightly and feeling and I instantly fell in love with it. From that moment on, it became like my best friend and it went everywhere with me . For a long time, we were inseparable .  

I’d say that the toy was worth its weight in gold to me. It was near and dear to my heart and the pride and joy of my childhood . I really loved it dearly . I feel bad that I lost it a few years later!

Word Group Used: Precious Object

For this answer, we used the ‘precious object’ word group, which has lots of interesting words and phrases:

• Irreplaceable
• I loved it dearly
• I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world
• Worth its weight in gold
• Near and dear to my heart
• The pride and joy of my childhood
• My prized possession
• I was inseparable from it
• I wouldn’t go anywhere without it
• I couldn’t live without it
• I don’t know what I’d do if I lost it

Childhood Toy Cue Card 2

• When you had this toy
• What it looked like  

And say why you liked this toy so much.

I’m going to talk about a toy I remember liking a lot when I was a child. It was a “My Little Pony” toy. It had a rainbow-colored mane and tail and a charmingly whimsical expression . I thought it was so cute and enchanting and for a long time, it was my absolute favorite . I think my grandmother gave it to me for Christmas, but I can’t remember clearly how I got it.

That My Little Pony toy was so lovable and endearing that I carried it with me wherever I went . It was made of colorful plastic and also a soft and cuddly material. It had a hair-like mane and tail that I could comb and style and I remember I used to talk to it while I combed its tail and looked after it.  

In my mind, it had its own personality, which was playful and irresistibly charming . It really was as cute as a button , with an appeal that made it stand out from other toys. And I had lots of toys at that time, but that My Little Pony became the princess of them all.  

I can remember one day almost losing it. While I was playing outside with my pony toy, I accidentally dropped it in the bushes at the back of my garden, and I couldn’t find it. I was heartbroken and cried for hours. I couldn’t sleep that night and kept thinking about my cute pony lost somewhere outside. The next day, my father found the toy and brought it back to me. I was overjoyed to be reunited with my beloved pony toy, and it made my heart melt to see it again.

Word Group Used: Cute Object

For this answer, we focused on how cute the toy was. So we could use the ‘cute object’ word group, which you could also use to describe a pet like a kitten or puppy, or rabbit:

• Irresistible
• Heartwarming
• As cute as a button
• Like a ray of sunshine
• As precious as a jewel
• Makes my heart melt
• As soft as a cloud
• Cute as a teddy bear
• As cute as a bug’s ear

Childhood Toy Cue Card 3

• What kind of toy it was  
• What games you played with it

And say why this was one of your favorite toys.

As a child, I was fascinated by my yoyo collection. I found yoyos endlessly entertaining and highly amusing and the yoyo was definitely my favorite toy. Yoyos were always such a pleasure to play with and I had a blast playing with them.  

For a few years when I was about eight or nine, whenever I would get my hands on a new yoyo, I would while away the hours playing with it. I couldn’t put it down , and I’d play it for hours on end . I remember I would really lose track of time, like I was mesmerized by it. Wow, I really enjoyed yoyos so much. It’s funny to remember that now.  

I had a few different yoyos with different colors. Each one was exciting in its own way. I loved learning all the tricks and trying out new moves . It was challenging at times , but it was also absorbing and very stimulating for my mind.

I can remember one time, some kids at school organized a yoyo competition . I was thrilled to take part in it. We gathered in the schoolyard, and everyone showed off their skills. I remember feeling both nervous and excited as I stepped up to take my turn . I didn’t win but I think I came second or close to second, and I remember feeling really proud.  

Looking back, I realize that my yoyo was more than just a toy . It was a way for me to express myself in a creative way , and to challenge myself also, and also to have fun with my friends. I think yoyos were a part of my childhood that I will always treasure .

Word Group Used: Fun Object

This answer used the ‘fun object’ word group. This is a great word group to use in so many answers. You can use these words to describe all kinds of fun games, things, activities, and memories. Here it is:

• Entertaining
• Diverting  
• Delightful  
• Absorbing  
• Challenging
• Fascinating
• Stimulating
• Mesmerizing
• Captivating
• Exhilarating
• Endlessly entertaining
• Highly amusing
• Tons of fun
• A pleasure to have
• Had a blast playing with it  
• I would while away the hours doing it
• I couldn’t put it down
• I’d play it for hours on end
• A source of great pleasure  
• So much fun
• Would play for hours on end
• Would lose track of time  

Now, It’s Your Turn

Are you ready to answer this question yourself?

First, choose a word group to use. Then memorize 10 or 15 of those words and phrases.

Next, sit down and turn on a voice recorder. Ask yourself to describe a toy that you liked in your childhood.

Spend 60 seconds writing down ideas and words and phrases you can use.  

Then start talking! And try to keep going for two minutes without stopping.

When you’ve finished, listen to your recording. It’s important to hear the mistakes that you’re making.

Then repeat the question and answer again. Try to improve a little more each time.

This a really good way to prepare for a band-seven score in part two of your IELTS Speaking test.

The main aim of the IELTS exam speaking test is to assess an applicant on their English speaking ability. You will be face to face with the examiner, and you might get nervous if you are not confident about your fluency in English.

Indeed, discussing my toys makes me nostalgic. In my point of view, childhood is the brilliant period of one’s life, and recollections identified with it would consistently hold an uncommon spot. I had a lot of toys like remote-controlled cars or planes, many actions figures, and even some other kinds of toys.

What was the Toy?

But I loved toys where I could build something with them, with whose help I could channel my inner creativity. My favourite toy was my Lego set. Everyone knows what a lego set is. You have blocks of different shapes and sizes which you connect to create or build something. I was fascinated by them from the beginning. A booklet was included in the box which contained the basic instructions but I seldom used it.

How often did You Play with the Toy?

I used to build everything from them ranging from cars to spaceships and buildings. Whatever I made on them I would show it to my friends with pride. I used to play with them because they acted as a creative outlet. I had a lot of toys to play with but I used to be fiddling with my lego set all the time. I used to spend hours playing with them.

I was possessive about the Lego set, and would neither let my siblings nor my friends touch it. Even though I don’t play with the Lego Set, I still had it kept in my cupboard. Recently I gave them away to my niece because of the nostalgic and emotional value they hold.

I was very fond of collecting different types of toys since I was a child. I used to tell my parents to buy different kinds of toys every few months. I had a keen interest in having battery-operated or remote-controlled toys, and action figures.  Here I will talk about a toy which was given to me on my seventh birthday.

My father bought an Iron Man action figure from the US. He kept it with him and gave it to me during my birthday party. It was a red and golden action figure, which operated electrically with the help of AA batteries. There was nothing else in the box. It was made up of plastic, but I often thought it was made of Iron because it was an Iron Man action figure! It’s amazing how the mind of an infant works.

I used to play with the toy throughout the day. I would not leave it alone for even a single moment. I would sleep, go to sleep with it, would take it to the park, I would also take it to my friend’s house and show it to them. Once I even snuck it in my school to show it to my classmates. The action figure had become a moment of pride for me because no one else in my school had it. It couldn’t do a lot of things. It would just raise its hand and say “I am Iron Man”, but still I would always play with it.

I don’t remember what happened with the action figure. I remember that I had dropped it and some parts had come off. My mother tried joining them but it wasn’t the same after that. I think she gave it away to an NGO or had donated it because I wasn’t able to find it. I still wonder if it had not broken, I would have kept it.

Yes, they do. When I look at the children around me, I feel that they have too many toys. I never had so many.

I think parents, today, are substituting the time they have to spend with children by giving them more and more toys.

7. Do you think playing with electronic toys has a good influence on kids?

Yes, electronic toys introduce children to technology. They increase the strategy forming skills.

They are good, but when children spend too much time on electronic games, they forget everything else and then these become negative.

8. Do you think there are some toys that are only suitable for girls and some that are only suitable for boys?

Not any more. Gender differences are disappearing fast and boys and girls play with the same type of toys nowadays.

9. Which do you think is better, for children to play with toy alone or with other kids?

It is definitely better for children to play with other kids. They learn caring and sharing and many other social skills when they play with others.

10. Do you think parents should encourage their children to share their toys with other kids?

Yes, definitely. They should encourage their children to share their toys with other children.

In this way they will not need to have many toys.

11. How are toys today different to toys of the past?

Today we have electronic toys, whereas earlier we had wooden toys and plastic toys.

12. How do you think toys will change in the future?

What the future holds in store for us no one can tell, but as far as I can see, there will be more and more electronic gadgets in the future, which the children will play with as toys.

13. If you were going to give a present to a child, what would you give him?

I would give a child, a book as a gift. He may not like it at first, but it will shortly develop the habit of reading one day.

I believe that books are the best gifts. They remain with that person forever.

14. What kinds of gifts do parents give to their young children?

Pendants give all sorts of gifts to their children. They know the requirement of their children and give gifts accordingly.

Mostly parents give educational gifts, from which the child can learn something in a fun way.

15. Is it good to give children too many presents such as too many toys?

No it is definitely not good to give a child too many presents. Children do not appreciate the value of toys when they are given too many toys.

It also decreases their imagination and creativity. They also do not learn sharing with other children.

16. Some parents don’t spend much time with their child but instead give the child gifts as a way to show their love. Do you think this is good enough?

No I do not think this is good enough. The time been didn’t spend with the children is more important then the gifts they give them.

Question: Describe a toy you got in your childhood. You should say:

• What it was
• When you got it
• How you got it
• And how you felt about it . 

Answer:  I think the toy that I remember best from my childhood was a toy farm. It consisted of small plastic farm animals, such as cows, sheep and pigs, and a few plastic people – the farmer, his wife and children. It also had fences that you could attach to each other to create fields.

It was given to me as a birthday present by my parents on my third birthday, as they had seen me looking longingly at the plastic farm animals in a toy shop. I can still recall how excited I was when I opened the present.  It is one of my earliest memories.  

As soon as I had opened it, I immediately started to set up the farm on the floor. It quickly became my favourite toy. I suppose it was a toy that allowed me to develop my imagination, because as far as I was concerned, these animals and people were real and they came to life in my head.

As to how I felt about it – well, I really loved it. It was my own little world. I used to spend hours setting up all the little fences and deciding which parts of the floor would become the fields. Then I would put the cows in one field, the pigs in another and so on. I invented stories of what was going on, and I imagined that I was one of the farmer’s daughters, feeding the chickens. 

Usually it was a peaceful game, but sometimes I would lose my temper if the animals, particularly the cows, kept falling over. At one point, to calm me down, my mother cut the legs off some of the most unstable cows and said they were now “lying down cows”. Occasionally my younger brother would drive a toy truck straight through the farm, which would make me cry.

I still have the toy farm and my little niece recently set it up again, so it made me feel nostalgic and happy to see the farm back in action.

This gown she wears for special occasions like a party. Sometimes I style her hair in different hairstyles. My parents gifted me, Skipper and Ken, on my last birthday. I play with Cinderella, Skipper, and Ken, imagine many stories and make them act in them. Sometimes I suppose they all are students, and I am their teacher. At times my friends also come home with their dolls, and we play with all our dolls. But I enjoy playing alone with Cinderella the most; she is my most precious toy.

Every child adores Teddy bears. These cuddly cuties are playmates of every child. But writing a long essay on the topic sometimes becomes challenging for kids as they cannot find the right expression to portray their thoughts. Here is my favourite toy teddy bear essay for class 3 students:

We all have been playing with toys since we are born. As infants, we had toys with sound and lights. Then came the block toys, cars and dolls. As we became older, we started playing with guns, building blocks and remote cars. Then come the teenage years, where our gadgets become our toys. However, one toy that never changes and is the eternal companion of every child is the teddy bear. We always have that one special teddy bear when we are infants, toddlers, children, teenagers and even when we are twenty.

I also like to have numerous toys. On my birthdays, festivals and other occasions, everyone gifts me toys. I have toy cars, puzzles, trucks, balls, robots, etc. Still, the toy I play the most with is my teddy bear. His name is Goofy. He is four feet tall, brown and with blue eyes. Goofy is my first gift from my grandmother, and she bought him for me on my first birthday. That makes him extra special to me. However, I love Goofy because he is cute, soft and cuddly. Goofy stays with me and sleeps with me. And on Sundays, he bathes with me. I cuddle with him when I feel scared, can’t sleep, or sad. He listens to all my stories attentively and hugs me when I hug him. Goofy and I play a lot. Sometimes it is just two of us, and sometimes my other teddy bears are also there. When we are not playing, Goofy sits in the corner of my bed with other teddy bears resting on his lap. When I study, Goofy sits quietly and waits for me to play with him. My dog, Fluffy, a cute white Pomeranian, loves playing with Goofy. When I come from school, sometimes I see Fluffy sitting with Goofy waiting for me. Then we all play together. I love Goofy a lot. He is my best playmate and a cherished gift from my grandmother.

When your child writes a composition on my favourite toy, they learn many things from it. The most important benefit of essay writing is the improvement in the linguistic skills of your child. Your child improves their sentence formation, and vocabulary and learns how to structure essays. They also understand their feelings for their favourite toys and learn to express them. They deeply inspect their feelings for their toys and the value attached to them. Your child gets the chance to visualise their connection to their favourite toy and write about it. It helps in boosting their confidence in creative writing.

Writing this essay unleashes the creativity of young students. As they think and write about their favourite toys, they improve their language and creative skills. Later they can use these learnings to write essays on other topics.
