How to Start a Water Refilling Business in Kenya [Full 2024 Guide]
With the increasing demand for safe drinking water, the water refilling business is now thriving in Kenya. A water refilling business in Kenya involves providing clean and purified drinking water to customers. It typically operates by selling water in bulk, often through refill stations, to individuals, households, businesses, and other establishments.
The idea of water refilling originates from the idea that people want clean and safe drinking water but don’t want to buy it from the shop or at a supermarket. For example, when you run out of water in your dispenser, instead of going to the supermarket to buy a new bottle, you simply go to a refill station with your old bottle and have it refilled.
This is much cheaper than buying a new bottle. As a result, there is a growing demand for this service, which makes it the perfect time to start a water refilling business in Kenya.

I know I said this is a thriving business but you can’t jump into it blindly. Before venturing into the water refilling business, you need to conduct thorough market research and feasibility studies. This will help you understand whether the people in your area require this service. For instance, if you live in an area where people mostly get their drinking water from a river or community well, they might not be interested in your product. So, ensure that you analyze the local market to see if there’s demand for water refilling services. Consider factors such as demographics, population density, and consumer preferences (Do they prefer tap water or your purified water). Additionally, conduct a competitor analysis to understand the existing market players and their strategies. If many other people are doing the same business, you might struggle, especially if you do the same thing they do. You should also consider where you will be getting your water. Is there a reliable source or local supplier? If you have to spend a lot to transport the water, you might not make any profits.
The water refilling business is still new to some areas in Kenya, so there are no clear legal and regulatory requirements. However, you want to be sure that you are complying with the law so you can start by doing the obvious. For instance, every business in Kenya must be registered. So, you can start by registering your business and obtaining the necessary licenses and permits. And, since water is something that people consume, you will probably need a food handling certificate. So, you might have to familiarize yourself with health and safety regulations related to water purification and packaging. Ideally, you want to ensure your operations align with environmental standards and waste disposal regulations. The additional permits you need to operate a water refilling station might vary depending on your county. So, visit the concerned county offices for clarifications. READ: How to Quickly Register a Business in Kenya [Legal Requirements]
I don’t always recommend writing a comprehensive business plan for a small business that doesn’t require outside funding or partners. If you are going to start a small water refilling operation, you unlikely need a thick business plan. However, you still need a roadmap to guide you while starting and running your business. So, depending on the scale of your water refilling station, you can either write a lean or traditional business plan. Either way, a business plan is essential for organizing your ideas and attracting potential investors. If you are writing a traditional business plan, you should include an executive summary, company description, market analysis, marketing and sales strategy, operations and management plan, financial projections, and funding and investment strategy. Ideally, you should do this during the research stage. But what kind of location should you be looking for? I recommend areas with high foot traffic and reasonable demand for clean drinking water. Consider proximity to residential areas, offices, schools, and other potential customer segments. Also, ensure that you can find a good business premise in that location with affordable rent. The location should also have a good source of water. You will need to conduct thorough water quality testing to ensure the water meets national standards. After finding the ideal location, you can set up the necessary infrastructure, including water purification and bottling facilities, storage tanks, and other equipment. Let’s talk more about equipment in the next step. READ: How to Find the Perfect Location for Your Business
The type of equipment you will need for your water refilling business in Kenya will vary depending on how you want to approach the business. You can either buy already purified water and sell it to customers or you can purify the water yourself. So, if you are going to do the purification yourself, you will need a purifier. Otherwise, you can do without it. However, you will probably need to buy a water venting ATM, whether you are purifying the water or not. You will also need storage tanks, rinsing jets, packaging benches, and a refilling station with tabs. I have included a list of important equipment you need later in the guide, so make sure to check that out.
If you decide that you want to purify the water yourself, you will need to buy a water-purifying machine. However, this is a pretty expensive machine, so if you don’t have enough startup capital, I recommend working with a supplier of already purified water. You can buy the machine later when the business grows. Usually, these machines use different water purification methods such as Reverse Osmosis (RO) and UV filtration. Whichever method you use, you will need to design a step-by-step water treatment process that includes filtration, disinfection, and mineral enhancement. Also, don’t forget to implement quality control measures to ensure the water consistently meets safety standards and is free from contaminants. We will talk more about quality control in step 11.
If you want customers to identify with your business, you might need to do some branding. Yes, some customers might bring their own bottles to avoid the additional cost of buying another bottle. However, in most cases, they probably won’t. So, make sure to invest in high-quality packaging materials such as bottles, caps, and labels that comply with industry standards. Design an attractive and informative label that clearly communicates the product’s features and safety certifications. This will help you develop a distinctive brand identity and establish a strong brand presence through consistent branding strategies.
Like any business, customers are not going to come running to your water refilling station as soon as you set it up. Some people might not even know what you do. Therefore, to attract customers and build brand awareness, you have to create a robust marketing and promotion strategy. Start by identifying your target audience and tailor your marketing efforts accordingly. You can utilize online platforms, such as social media, websites, and online directories, to reach a wider audience. If you have a marketing budget, you can also explore local advertising options, such as print media and billboards. I personally recommend offering promotional discounts and organizing launch events to generate initial interest. On top of that, you can establish partnerships with local businesses and institutions where you can supply purified water in bulk.
If you are new to this business, you will likely not know how to charge for your services. First of all, you need a pricing strategy that works both for you and your customer. This means that you have to turn a profit without scaring customers away for being too pricey. To determine a favorable pricing strategy for your water refilling services, consider things like production costs, market rates, and competitor pricing. The goal is to offer competitive prices without compromising on water quality or profitability. As your business grows and you get the hang of it, you can tweak your prices based on how it is performing. For instance, if you find that your profit margins are too low, find a way to increase the prices without chasing the customers away.
At some point, you will need people to help you run your water-refilling business in Kenya. This can be right when you start the business or later when it grows and becomes too big for your to handle yourself. Either way, you need to clearly identify the staffing requirements for your water refilling station, including roles such as water purification specialists, packaging operators, and customer service representatives. After that, recruit competent and reliable employees who align with your business values. Make sure that you provide comprehensive training on water purification processes, quality control measures, packaging procedures, and customer service. More importantly, emphasize the importance of hygiene and maintaining high standards throughout the operation.
The reputation of your business will largely rely on the quality of water you sell. That is why it is important that you establish a stringent quality control process to ensure consistent water quality. You need to regularly test the purified water to meet safety standards set by regulatory bodies. Also, implement protocols for handling customer complaints and feedback to continually improve your services and address any concerns promptly.
Equipment You Need to Start A Water Refilling Business in Kenya
To establish a successful water refilling business in Kenya, there are several key pieces of equipment you will need to have. These include:
- Water Purifiers
- Storage tanks
- Rinsing jets
- Packaging benches
Water Vending ATM Machine: Your Core Equipment
The cornerstone of your water refilling business is a reliable water vending ATM machine. This cutting-edge device enables you to sell the precise amount of water corresponding to the customer’s payment.
It not only facilitates accurate sales transactions but also maintains comprehensive sales records, simplifying your sales reconciliation process. Additionally, when you are unable to manage the business personally, this machine proves invaluable.
Equipped with a password-protected Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), it allows you to calibrate prices and review sales records securely, safeguarding against unauthorized tampering.
Water Purifiers: Ensuring Water Purity
Another vital piece of equipment for your business is a high-quality water purifier. This device enables you to purify water from various sources, including dams, boreholes, and rivers, ensuring optimal water quality.
However, if you prefer to purchase pre-purified water instead, you may not need a purifier. In such case, you can connect with reliable suppliers who deliver purified water directly to your business, allowing you to store it in designated storage tanks.
Storage Tanks for Purified Water: Ensuring a Steady Supply
Once you have purified the water or received pre-purified water, you need to properly store it. Sufficient storage is necessary to cater to customer demands without delays caused by waiting for the purification process.
Therefore, you need to invest in high-capacity storage tanks to maintain a steady supply. While I personally prefer stainless steel tanks due to their superior quality you can also use plastic storage tanks.
However, plastic tanks may affect the taste or introduce odors to the water, especially when stored for extended periods. Additionally, long-term contact with plastic can lead to the release of oily substances or the growth of algae, potentially compromising water quality.
Rinsing Jet: Ensuring Clean Refillable Bottles
Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene is essential for customer satisfaction and safety. A rinsing jet is a vital tool to ensure that refillable bottles brought by customers are thoroughly cleaned before the refill.
This process removes any impurities or odors that may have developed, ensuring a fresh and pleasant experience for your customers.
Filling Station with Multiple Taps: Efficient Retail Operations
If your business model involves supplying water to retail outlets, a well-equipped filling station with multiple taps is indispensable. This facility allows you to fill numerous bottles simultaneously, streamlining the packaging process.
The number of taps you need should be determined by your refill frequency, but I recommend having no fewer than four taps. The greater the number of taps, the faster and more efficient the bottle refilling process will be.
Packaging Benches: Streamlining Packaging Processes
To optimize the packaging procedures, you need to invest in packaging benches especially if you are targeting retail operations. These benches serve as dedicated stations for tasks such as capping, sealing, and applying labels to the bottles.
They can also function as temporary holding areas before dispatching or transferring the bottles to your storage facility. For this purpose, I recommend stainless steel packaging benches for their durability and cleanliness.
The Bottom Line
Starting a water refilling business in Kenya is an exciting venture that addresses the growing demand for safe drinking water. By conducting thorough market research, complying with legal requirements, and developing a robust business plan, you can establish a successful water refilling business.
To be successful in this business, you need to focus on maintaining high water quality, implementing effective marketing strategies, and providing excellent customer service.
Remember, the water refilling business not only contributes to public health but also plays a significant role in the local economy. Therefore, with careful planning and dedication, you can make a positive impact while building a profitable business .

Guidelines To Setting Up A Water Filling Station Business In Kenya
Have you ever wanted to start a water filling station business in Kenya? Today we want to share with you some guidelines to setting up a water filling station business in Kenya. The following guidelines will help you know what you need and how to go about it before you commit your money and time.
Guidelines to setting up a water filling station business in Kenya- preparation stage
There are a number of things that you must take care of before you begin operating this or any other business. These processes help you to be able to have a clear roadmap and projections of how the business is going to operate. The preparation stage also helps you to know whether it’s a viable business option to venture into or not. It also helps you know which is the best location to set up the business.
Let us now look at some of the processes you need to undertake beforehand for smooth running of the business.
Market research- market research is a process which an entrepreneur undertakes to test how the potential market will respond to the product they are intending to introduce to them. It can involve giving out samples and receiving the feedback from a questionnaire or even word of mouth while interacting with the potential clients. It can also involve physical observation of the target business locality to see if there are similar businesses and how they operate. You can learn if there are loopholes that are not being leveraged by the existing businesses that you can come in and maximize on for a competitive advantage. It helps you to be able to know the size of the market, their purchasing power their buying trends and also if they are the right target audience. Sometimes you might realize that the product that you want to introduce to that target market is not what they need but it is needed elsewhere.
For example there are some products that can do really well in places where the residents belong to the lower level income economy but not well embraced by the upper class economy.
Business plan- after you have identified a potential market is ideal for your product and in this case bottled water or water refilling you can now go ahead and prepare the business plan.
A business plan is a document that outlines how your business will be run, sources of funding and expansion plans. It also explains the structure of your business and who are the key stakeholders or the key persons who will be needed in the business operations.
Business location search
Where is your target market in terms of location? Is it in the central business district in a town, is it in an estate or a shopping centre? Does that location have the necessary infrastructure and public amenities like electricity, water, accessible roads, good drainage etc.? These are very important considerations to make.
Business premises identification
After you have identified the suitable location for your business, you now need to find an ideal business premises. Sometimes this is a hard nut to crack because you may find an ideal locality but no premises is available to move in to or none of the available ones are at a strategic place like where it’s visible or has people traffic. For business survival, you must be visible and accessible.
Business premises renovation
After taking care of the above and satisfied with everything, you now need to do the necessary renovation that will be suitable for your business operations. Consider also how you will be serving your clients by ensuring they can comfortably transact with you. Leave some space inside where they can stand or sit if necessary as they wait to be served.
Guidelines to setting up a water filling station business in Kenya- equipment required
Before we proceed on sharing the equipment that you need for this type of business it’s important to note that there are two ways of going about this business. One you can opt buy already purified water or you can opt to purify the water on your own. The first option is more cost effective to start because there are some equipment that you will not need to invest in. However the downside of this option is that you will be making less profit than the person who has invested in purifying equipment.
In the second option you will invest in water purifying equipment which can significantly add to the cost of setting up the business but eventually you will recoup what you had invested in the equipment as a result of the increased profit margins.
In the former option you are buying water that is already purified which means that there’s a mark-up already added to the water. But if you are purifying your own water from the source you will be saving on the mark-up added to the already purified the water as seen above.
Equipment needed.
One of the main equipment that you will need for this business is a water vending ATM machine. This is what you use to sell the water. It helps you to be able to sell the right amount of water for the money that the client has. It helps you to keep the sales records and also be able to do sales reconciliation. If you have employed someone to run the business when you are not able to a run or operate the business on a day-to-day basis it comes in handy. Because it also comes with a password protected PLC, you can be able to calibrate the prices and review the sales records without having to worry that someone else has tampered with them.
Another major equipment that is necessary for this business is a water purifier. It helps you to purify your own water from your preferred source. A good purifier is able to purify water from different sources like dams, borehole, river e t c. Sometimes though you might not need these if you opt to buy already purified water. For clients who do not have enough initial capital to invest in a water purifier we do connect them to suppliers of purified water where the purified water is just delivered to you and you store it in storage tanks.
After you have purified the water with your purifier or received purified water from your supplier, you need it stored so that when you have plans you have enough stock to sell. You do not want to run the water purifier when the clients are waiting because the rate of output of the machine that is purifying the water might not be as quick as the rate of clients coming in. You end up losing clients who are frustrated by waiting.
On the other hand, if you are buying already purified water, you also need enough storage to last you until the next delivery. It is therefore important to invest in high capacity storage thanks. The best storage tanks are those that are made of stainless steel. However you can also use plastic storage tanks but sometimes they can make the water to have a different taste or some odour because it is plastic. Some other times when water stays in the plastic for a long time it can react with the plastic and it starts shedding of some oily stuff or even starts forming some algae.
Rinsing jet
A rinsing jet is also a very important equipment. When clients bring their bottles for refilling sometimes they might not be very clean but also remember having stayed with the water for a long time plastic tends to have some smell and the reaction with water can also change the smell of the water. That is why rinsing the bottle is very important before you refill it with freshwater.
Filling station with taps
If your business model is not targeted to just walk-in clients but you intend to sell to retail outlets, it means you will be packing a lot of water bottles at once. This is where having a filling station with several taps comes in handy. It helps you to be able to fill up many bottles at a go. The number of taps can be determined by how frequently you will be refilling the bottles. However we would recommend you don’t go with anything less than 4 taps. This helps you to be able to fill up many bottles in a short time. The more the taps, the less time it takes to refill the bottles.
Packaging benches
Packaging benches are also important for the above mentioned business model. These are important for packaging processes like inserting the caps, sealing and placing the stickers on the bottles. They can also be used as a temporary holding station before dispatch or transferring to you storage facility. The best packaging benches are those made of stainless steel.
Business licences and permits
In Kenya it is a requirement for any legal business to be registered and issued with the necessary licences and permits. This can be gotten from your county offices. Some of the documents that you need for this business include: the business registration certificate, food handling certificate among others.

Licences and Requirements for Starting Water Refill Business in Kenya
- by Kioko Nyamasyo on Tuesday, 30 May 2023 - 3:25 pm
Over the years, the water refilling business has grown to become one of the most popular ventures in Kenya, especially in urban areas.
With the business bringing modest returns to investors, many Kenyans have been rushing to set up water-refilling plants.
This prompted the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to prepare a detailed list of requirements and conditions entrepreneurs must fulfill before dipping their feet into the business.
Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of permits, licences and other required documents you should be aware of before starting a water bottling plant.
Licences/Permits
KEBS listed three mandatory certificates for Kenyans aiming to start a water refilling business. It should be noted that individual counties where the business is situated can demand an extra set of permits.
Before setting up your plant, you are required to apply for a public health certificate. This is provided by approved government facilities under the Ministry of Health.
You will also be required to provide medical certificates for all your staff. The service is also available in government health facilities at a cost of Ksh700.
If you are not using tap water for your plant, you will need an abstraction permit provided by Water Resource Management Authority (WARMA).
Other requirements and permits
You will need to submit a sample of your product to KEBS for testing to determine if it is safe for drinking. Thereafter, you will be mandated to demonstrate the production of a quality product by maintaining quality records as per the signed scheme of supervision and control.
After being given the KEBS mark of quality, the agency demansd that, “No water bottling company located in a residential set-up shall be granted a permit to use the standardisation mark .”
“Residential setups include buildings that possess residences on the upper floors and business premises on the ground level,” KEBS clarifies.
In an effort to make sure a trader consistently provides clean drinking water; KEBS asks for the establishment of clear mechanisms for dealing with customer complaints and proof of plant cleaning and maintenance.
KEBS also issued clear standards on how the building hosting the business should be set up. The building should contain stainless steel tables for production, an insectocuter and a first aid kit, a foot bath for the production area, and a hand washing facility with soap, sanitizer and a drying facility.
Additionally, the plant should have; a secured raw water storage tank, a window with screens to prevent the entry of flies, a fluorescent bulb for foreign matter inspection, protective clothing for staff and waterproof walls and floor (tiled).

Water Refilling Station Business: Steps and Considerations
Water refilling station business is a worthy investment. This article is a step by step guide to start one.
Well, you have been wondering which business to engage in especially in the new normal world. Every day, come rain or sunshine, people are increasing in numbers. The population is rapidly growing. As such, there are basic needs that everyone must consume, whether rich or poor. In essence, every household must budget for FOOD AND WATER – This is where the water refill station comes into play.
Venturing in the water business is a good deal . Regardless of how many water vendors are in Kenya, people are increasingly conscious of the quality of water they are consuming. Therefore, this is a profitable area to venture in.
What’s needed to start a water refill station business?
Good water source:.
Water refilling station business requires reliable water source – No bargain. The cost of the water treatment plant depends on the quality of your raw water. A water analysis is required before the water treatment plant is designed.
Strategic location:
Answering the questions below will help you choose a suitable location for the water business.
- Is the site easily visible to a passerby?
- How much foot and vehicular traffic is around the site?
- Are there other prominent retailers in the immediate vicinity?
- How many households do you estimate are within 1 km of the shop?
- What type of neighbourhood is it? Security is also another factor.
- How accessible is the site? Is it easy for customers with heavy water bottles to enter and exit the store?
- Thinking broadly, who are your competitors in the local drinking water market? For example, are there supermarkets selling bottled water? Do they offer Bottled water delivery services?
- Where do people in the location currently get their water (for drinking and for household use)?
Selecting and Purchasing Water Treatment Equipment:
The prices of the water purifiers and vending machines can vary from Ksh 150,000 to Ksh 500,000. This is determined by two main factors:
The types of contaminants found in their source water (what problems are there with the quality of the water?).
To determine the water quality, a water analysis report from a water laboratory is required. This is what gives your water purifier designer guidance in designing the required machine. Your water purifier machine technician will require a one-litre water sample before giving you a quotation. There are exceptional scenarios where a customer is using water from a purifying company such as Purefresh, Leofresh or Spash etc where no water analysis or sample is needed. In most cases, such equipment will require few or single post filters and a water sterilizer and hence they are the cheapest water machines.
The water treatment capacity required to meet their projected sales volumes (How much clean water do you need to produce in order to meet your sales goals)?
There are capacities ranging from 250 LPH (Litres per hour), 500 LPH, 1000 LPH, 2000 LPH etc.
You can also pack your water if you meet the following requirements .
Is there any information regarding how to begin the water packaging business that has been omitted? Or that may have misled the reader? Kindly feel free to leave a comment, you might help someone somewhere. Let’s share the information.

First, you must register your business with the Registrar of Companies or the local county government authority.
Next, acquire a business permit from the county government, which allows you to operate legally within a specific jurisdiction. Additionally, obtaining a county health certificate is crucial since water is classified as a food product.
This certification ensures that your refilling station meets health and safety regulations. On both a personal and community, the presence of a water refilling station means that you get to save money that you can then spend on other things that might help to improve your life. Think about how much you might spend on bottled water per month, and then add that cost back into your bank. That extra cash can be helpful in so many ways, and all you need to do is use some refillable bottles to keep getting your drinking water from this equally reusable source.

Procedures in starting a water refilling station business in Kenya
Decide if you want to put up your own water refilling station or just acquire a water refilling station franchise. If you have decided to put up your own, proceed below:
Reach to Tassmatt to help on water analysis and advise on the best machine that suits your business.
1. Make a Business Plan
This is created to outline your business’s vision, brand values, identity, and how it has to operate to become successful. It also helps in keeping you focused on your business goals and making your business attractive to investors.
2. Right Location
Finding a good location is one of the problems a new business owner must face. The location needs to be near your target market, making your business visible to people or look for a site that is heavy in foot traffic. Situate in places near schools, hospitals and clinics, offices, hotels, apartment and high-rise buildings, and subdivisions.
3. Look for a Supplier
Find a supplier of water refilling equipments and ask for their price list. Don’t settle on any supplier. Look for accredited suppliers like Tassmatt and pop-in for business planning and purchase, constructing your water refilling station and help you make the right design for your water refilling station business.
After closing the deal, you can now start the construction of your water refilling station which will take 3 to 4 weeks to finish. At the same time, start making the deep well if this will be your preferred water source. Ask us to visit the site to make sure the carpenters are strictly following the layout plan, importantly the design on the washing area, piping and drainage). While the construction is on-going, you can now apply for a business permit to save time.
4. Register the Business
This will make your business legal and functional. If you’re a single owner, go to DTI, which will issue a certificate of registration of business name (list at least 5 to 10 preferred business names). After you get the certificate for registered business name, go to your local municipal office and apply for a county business permit. The process will take about 2 to 3 weeks depending on the area.
You can now start buying other supplies you will need like water containers, seals, heat gun, sanitizer soap, etc. At the same time, you can also start constructing your business’s signage and sticker labels for your products.
Once the construction is finished and the water source is ready, you can now schedule the installation of the machines and equipments (it’s better to do it at night to avoid people around). Complete installation takes 1 to 2 days only.
Dry run the machine and equipments for 1 to 3 days before selling the product, or get a sample for a water analysis. Reach Tassmatt and ask the procedures on how to test the water. (Tip: it’s better to get a water sample after a month of operation to make sure the result of water analysis is good.)

How To Start A Small Scale Purified Water Business In Kenya Affordably
In this article, we will be discussing how to start a small scale purified water business in Kenya affordably. We will be discussing the equipment you will need, the process of purifying water, where to get your water from, and how to market your business.
How To Start A Small Scale Purified Water Business In Kenya Affordably- What you need to get started
If you’re looking to start a small-scale purified water business in Kenya, there are a few things you’ll need to get started. First, you’ll need access to clean raw water. We don’t recommend waste water from factories, sewerage system or highly polluted rivers that contain water from industrial effluent . This can be from a well, borehole, or other source. Second, you’ll need a purification system. There are a variety of options available, both affordable and expensive.
Third, you’ll need containers to store the purified water in. Again, there are a variety of options available, large plastic storage tanks or better still stainless steel storage tanks.
Finally, you’ll need a way to distribute the water to your customers. This can be done via delivery or through a vending machine or kiosk also known as a water vending station . With the right planning and execution, starting a small-scale purified water business in Kenya can be a profitable endeavor!
The cost of setting up a small scale purified water business in Kenya
This is a relatively small amount of money compared to other businesses in Kenya. For example, setting up a small scale maize milling business can cost upwards of KES 500,000 (USD 5,000).
There are several factors that contribute to the low cost of setting up a purified water business in Kenya. First of all, purified water is not a complicated product to produce. The technology and equipment needed to purify water are relatively simple and inexpensive.
Secondly, there is a large demand for purified water in Kenya especially in urban centres owing to the fact many people are conscious of their health and dangers of contaminated water. This means that there is already a market for the product, which makes it easier to set up and operate a successful purified water business in most parts of Kenya.
Finally, the Kenyan government has initiatives in place to support the growth of small businesses. For example, the government and financial institutions offer loans and grants to help entrepreneurs get their businesses off the ground. Another source of affordable and friendly source of funding can be a Sacco or chama loan.
If you are interested in starting a small scale purified water business in Kenya, then we would recommend that you try any of these options.
Where to sell your product
There are many options for selling your product once you have started your small scale purified water business in Kenya. You can sell to individuals, businesses, or both.
Some ideas for selling to individuals include: -Selling at events. -Selling to walk in clients at your vending station. -Selling to your estate community.
Some ideas for selling to businesses include: -Selling to restaurants and cafes -Selling to hotels and other lodging establishments -Selling to schools and other institutions
Marketing your business
When it comes to marketing your new business, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, you need to make sure that your target market is aware of your product. This can be accomplished through traditional marketing methods such as print or television ads, or more modern methods such as online advertising or social media campaigns. A cheaper way of reaching out to potential clients in the estate is by placing posters/stickers on gates to plots, Kenya power electric posts or walls within the estate as long as you are not violating anti-poster regulations.
Once you’ve got potential customers interested in your product, it’s important to make sure that they understand the benefits of purified water. Be sure to highlight statistics on the health benefits of drinking purified water, and how it can improve people’s quality of life.
Finally, remember to focus on the affordability of your product. Many people may be turned off by the perceived high cost of purified water, so it’s important to emphasize that your business offers an affordable option. Be sure to include pricing information in all of your marketing materials, and consider offering discounts or promotions to attract budget-conscious consumers.
Challenges you may face and how to overcome them
- One way is to find an affordable source of water. This can be done by searching for natural springs or wells in your area, or by negotiating with local water suppliers.
- Another way to overcome the challenge of access to water is to purify water yourself. This can be done using a variety of methods, such as reverse osmosis, distillation, or ultraviolet light sterilization.
- A third way to overcome the challenge of access to water is to buy purified water from companies that sell purified water. This water is already purified which saves you on the cost of buying purifying machines. In fact there are many businesses that are already doing this in Kenya.
- The downside is that the margins you make compared to the person purifying their own water is smaller. In the long run the person who has invested in their own purification machine make more returns. Another advantage of purifying your own water is that it’s more reliable because the raw water is easily accessible and you can purify it at your own convenience and the amount you want.
- 4. Finally, you can also try rainwater harvesting as a way to get affordable and reliable water for your business. This involves collecting rainwater from rooftops and storing it in tanks or reservoirs for later use.
There you have it, a complete guide on how to start a small scale purified water business in Kenya affordably. We hope that this article has been helpful and informative, and that you will be able to put these tips into action to start your very own business. Thank you for reading!

Once everything is perfectly set up, you have the ideal water bottling machine and comply with all regulations; you can start enjoying your income. However, being too eager to hasten your set up process while ignoring integral steps will bring turmoil in the future. That is why understanding the essence of starting a water bottling company in Kenya the right way is a great thing.
What is the spiritual meaning of dreaming about water? Everything to know
What does a water bottling business entail?
The business' diction is a straightforward explanation, but do you know the entire dynamics? Of course, it is all about bottling and selling water, but for such to happen, one has to implement certain finance fundamentals.
Before you start researching water bottling companies in Nairobi to do your benchmarking, you ought to know what you are getting yourself into. On paper, it might look like a simple and hassle-free business, but maybe there is more to it than what you easily observed in your reconnaissance visit.
A water bottling business is whereby individuals, with the right machinery and other apparatus, package drinking water into plastic or glass bottles. Depending on your financial muscle, you can go for a large or small-scale enterprise, the former gaining immense popularity in Kenya.
And the niche has remarkable profit-making opportunities. It is not uncommon for established business (commercial enterprises) and private individuals to subscribe to a water vending establishment. Therefore, if you manage to tap this market, you will be making great margins monthly. This will allow you to breakeven within a short time.
The 10 best businesses to start with 200k in Kenya in 2022
Water is doing great as a revenue generator for most entrepreneurs. For a natural resource that has various alternatives, an investor’s creativity is what makes people buy and keep coming back. Therefore, for the right appeal in your future water bottling company, focus on healthiness, purity and taste.
Water is a basic necessity that has various state regulations for those looking to sell it. Some are more about the ecological implications of bottling, while others are about safety and revenue collection.
Indeed, regardless of the requirement, you have to ascertain that you comply. This way, you will have a smooth set up and transition in the water vending market in Kenya. So, what is required to start a water distribution business in Kenya?
1. Planning your business
Although it might seem cliché, a business plan is a necessity if you want to see your enterprise grow. It is like the blueprint that will guide the setting up process. From your forecasted cashflows, you will realise how much you will bring in the first year and whether it is a worthy investment.
How to become a business-oriented person
However, remember to be conservative and realistic when coming up with revenue assumptions. The idea behind a cash flow model is to figure out if your water bottling business will be realistic. Also, the projected cashflows will give you a great reply to “Is water bottling a profitable business?” as you will have realistic figures to perform a sound comparison.
As you are projecting your revenues, do not forget to do the same for expenses. You will require a water bottling machine that will be a capital expenditure and will form a great portion of your sunk costs. For instance, you will need to plan for:
- A water treatment system.
- Store build-out expenses.
- Initial working expense.
The above elements’ expenditure will depend on the magnitude of your business. Of course, expect to spend more if you are planning on establishing a large scale water bottling business.
2. Choosing the ideal location
How to take care of Brazilian weave
Location is key in every business. Here, you have first to figure out who will be buying your product – your target client. Therefore, if your customer niche doesn’t care about your location and prefer faceless interaction, you can create an interactive e-commercial website to process orders.
If your water distribution business research indicates that your clients prefer walk-ins, then you can estimate the percentage of people that are likely to visit your store. Do that for various possible locations and figure out the one that makes sense.
Your water source is also a major determinant of your business' location. Remember that water is your raw material, and you cannot have your business in a location that is hard to get the natural resource. You will most likely be looking into tap water, groundwater (boreholes) and surface water. Each has its purification requirements to meet consumption quality.
What is the cost of the location you prefer? Will you need to create partitions or reconfigure the shop? Such considerations are also essential when choosing the desired location. Ascertain that you keep them in mind.

3. Setting up your water distribution business
If you are wondering, “how do I start a water bottling business?" then the setup process is the most integral. And what will be your biggest expenditure? The water treatment equipment, of course.
If you are looking to create a good reputation in the market, which is every entrepreneur’s interest, better invest in the crème de la crème. You ought to be aware of the different water treatment technologies and choose the most preferred. You can go for physical filtration, ultraviolet radiation and reverse osmosis membrane filtration.
Other than the water purification machinery, it would be best if you planned for your supply back-up. How many people are you going to hire in the water bottling business? How will you market your product to ascertain that it sells?
4. Obtaining the necessary licenses and permits
The manual of how to start a water bottling company in Kenya cannot be complete without the licensing procedures. Every business establishment in Kenya ought to obtain the appropriate licenses to operate. What are the required licenses and permits for a water distribution business?

In Kenya, the bottled water market makes a sales estimate of Ksh.12 billion every year. The market has more than 1,000 well-established brands. A simple water bottling business can make an average of Ksh.1.2 million every year.
Who is the largest bottled water company?

Steps to Start a Water Refilling Business in Kenya. Conduct Market Research and Feasibility Study. Identify the Legal and Regulatory Requirements. Write a Business Plan. Find a Good Location. Buy the Necessary Equipment. Purify the Water. Do Packaging and Branding. Create a Marketing and Promotion Strategy.
One of the first things you'll need to do when starting a water refilling business in Kenya is to determine your starting costs.
