A University of Pittsburgh student went viral after calling out her professor for giving her class an “insane” assignment.

In her video , Peyton Gualtieri (@peytgual), the student, read the assignment aloud. As of Monday afternoon, her TikTok had more than 1.3 million views and over 190,100 likes.

“Typically I don’t get triggered by a lot of things. But this assignment that I just got is so insane,” Gualtieri said.

@peytgual had to post this .. so insane!!! #universityofpittsburgh #pitt #fyp #foryou ♬ original sound – peytgual

The student then proceeded to read the prompt and questions aloud. Apparently, Gualtieri’s professor wanted students to write about “an encounter between a man and a woman that ends up in a rape.” The students had to describe the man and woman’s physical characteristics, whether others were present, and where they met, among other things.

But the professor wanted more. Gualtieri said that her professor also wanted students to describe the behavior of both parties at the place (event, a bar, or party) before the crime occurred. In addition, they were tasked with answering questions such as, “How was the woman treated?” and “Why did the man believe it was OK to have sex with her?”

Gualtieri said she took issue with one question in particular, though.

“The last one says: One part of rape culture surrounds teaching women how not to be raped rather than for men to be taught not to rape. Suggest two ways on how men should be taught not to rape,” she said.

The student said that she found the questions outrageous. And to prove that she wasn’t exaggerating, she showed viewers her computer screen.

Viewers said that they equally appalled by the assignment.

“Just saw another girls video about this same assignment,” one viewer wrote. “I cant believe this is real.”

“That professor needs to be FIRED,” another added.

“This is appalling,” a third viewer said.

Others, however, offered possible explanations for the bizarre assignment.

“My professor in CJ also did this assignment and said, ‘Anyone who came up with an answer you’re wrong,’” one student shared. “Wonder if it’s the same case?”

@peytgual heres the update!! #universityofpittsburgh #pitt #college #tw ♬ original sound – peytgual

That doesn’t appear likely. In a follow-up video , Gualtieri said that her professor issued an apology. Still, students are expected to complete the assignment.

“While this topic is undoubtedly challenging and difficult to engage on, my intention with the video and course reading was to bring rape culture and the pervasiveness of victim blaming and shaming to the class so we could have a constructive dialogue,” the professor wrote.

The professor did update the assignment, however. Students no longer have to write about a hypothetical rape scenario. But they do have to answer how men can be taught to not rape.

The Daily Dot has reached out to the University of Pittsburgh via email and to Gualtieri by TikTok comment.

Housing assignments for the 2022-23 academic year have been announced.

a student and adult pushing a full blue and gold housing cart across the street

The University of Pittsburgh will welcome students to campus next month for Pitt Arrival 2022 , with more than 8,000 students moving into University housing Aug. 20-25.

In preparation, the University notified students of their housing assignments for the upcoming academic year through their Pitt email account today.

University housing encompasses more than 20 locations  including Amos Hall, Bouquet Gardens, Brackenridge Hall, Bruce Hall, Forbes Hall, Forbes-Craig Apartments, Holland Hall, Irvis Hall, Litchfield Towers A-C, Lothrop Hall, McCormick Hall, Nordenberg Hall, Oakwood Apartments, Panther Hall, Ruskin Hall and Sutherland Hall .

Partner properties have previously been used to expand Pitt’s housing availability, supporting record enrollment levels and housing demand. This academic year, the University will partner with Carlow University — located less than a mile away from Pitt’s campus on Fifth Avenue — to provide additional student housing, selected based on the community partnership between the two universities, proximity to campus and resident amenities. Just over 100 first-year residents will fully occupy floors in Frances Warde and Dougherty Halls, with each double and triple room providing air conditioning, a microwave and refrigerator, twin-size beds, desks, dressers and more. Consistent with Pitt students who reside in University housing, students will have a complete Pitt experience including resident advisors and student life activities, in addition to onsite dining, laundry facilities and 24/7 security at building entrances.

More information is available on the Pitt Arrival website , including FAQs , helpful lists  about what to bring to campus, housing property details, move-in information, parking and mobility. Students can also use the Ship2Pitt Program to have their belongings delivered before they arrive.

What is the Writing Center?

The Writing Center is an academic center supported by the Department of English and the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences for students to come to work on their writing. Students must be enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh in order to register for an appointment. Our staff, which includes faculty and undergraduate peer tutors, have been trained to help others with their writing.

Other Pitt affiliates, such as faculty and staff, are also welcome to use the Writing Center.

You can get support on academic, professional, and creative writing. Our consultants can help you with writing for traditional or digital media.

When should i go to the writing center.

Suppose you're writing a paper for one of your classes and you find yourself wondering:

  • Will what I've written make sense to the audience I've chosen?
  • Have I done what the assignment asks me to do?
  • Are there parts that are unclear?
  • Have I left something important unsaid or included too much?
  • How do I give credit to the sources I've used?
  • Can I make sure that there aren't a lot of grammar mistakes?
  • How can I revise my writing given the comments my instructor has made?

A consultant at the Writing Center can help you find the answers to these and other questions when you are writing.

Keep in mind that the consultant’s role is to provide support and guidance, not to correct your writing for you or tell you what to write. Ultimately, only you, the writer, can be responsible for your writing. The success of every appointment depends on the work you are willing to put into your writing.

What should I expect when I go to the Writing Center?

There are no grades, no homework, and no grammar drills at the Writing Center. Instead, you will be asked to identify why you've come to the Center, what sort of paper you're working on, and when it is due. Then you and the consultant will discuss your concerns as well as any added suggestions that the consultant might have.

What if I don't have anything written yet?

Come to the Writing Center with whatever you have: notes, scribbles, ideas, worries. You and your consultant can work from where you are to where you want to be.

Other than the times listed, does the Writing Center ever close?

The Writing Center is closed when DSAS classes are not meeting: Fall Break; finals week; between terms; Spring break; Juneteenth; July 4th; Thanksgiving week; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and other holidays.

How do I arrange to speak with a Writing Center consultant?

You can make an appointment by visiting our online scheduler  and selecting the schedule for the current term. Appointments are 25 minutes long. Students may make book 2.5 hours of appointments per week but only one appointment per day.  Using multiple identities to book additional time is a violation of academic integrity.

First-year composition, directed self-placement.

Pitt offers directed self-placement (DSP) for incoming students enrolling in introductory composition courses. As an incoming student, you can select from  Seminar in Composition ,  Workshop in Composition , or  Workshop in Composition: ESL  based on your assessment of your own writing needs and goals. Seminar in Composition  is the course that most undergraduates take to fulfill the first of three writing-intensive requirements in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences . To help you assess your writing needs and goals, we recommend that you complete the  DSP Module  available through the William S. Dietrich II Institute for Writing Excellence. Selecting the appropriate class will best prepare you for your writing life at Pitt.

Goals for First-Year Composition Courses

While the readings and assignments in different sections of first year writing courses may vary, your section, like all the others, consists of a sequence of assignments that will require you to

1.  Engage in composing as a creative, disciplined form of critical inquiry.

In this course, you’ll compose as a way to generate ideas as well as explain them. You’ll form questions, explore problems, and examine your own experiences, thoughts, and observations.  Investigating a multifaceted subject, you’ll be expected to make productive use of uncertainty as you participate in sustained scrutiny of the issues at hand.

2.  Compose thoughtfully crafted essays that position your ideas among other views.

In response to reading, listening to and discussing challenging texts, you’ll compose essays in which you develop informed positions that engage with the positions of others.  You’ll analyze as well as summarize the texts you read, and you’ll compose essays that pay close attention both to the ideas voiced by other writers and to specific choices they make with language and form.

3.  Compose with precision, nuance, and awareness of formal conventions.

You’ll work on crafting clear, precise prose that uses a variety of sentence and paragraph structures. You’ll be required to learn the conventions for quoting and paraphrasing responsibly and adeptly, and you’ll be assisted with editing strategies that reflect attention to the relation between style and meaning.  You’ll also have opportunities to consider when and how to challenge conventions as well as follow them.

4.  Revise your writing by rethinking the assumptions, aims, and effects of prior drafts.

This course approaches the essay as a flexible genre that takes on different forms in different contexts—not just as a thesis-driven argument that adheres to a rigid structure. Much class time will be devoted to considering the purpose, logic, and design of your own compositions, and you’ll be given opportunities to revise your work in light of comments and class discussion, with the aim of making more attentive decisions.

You must earn a grade of "C minus" or higher in order to fulfill the introductory composition course requirement; those who earn a “C” or above will have substantially progressed toward fulfilling the goals described above. Subsequent writing-intensive courses you take in any discipline should help you further develop your abilities as a writer and reader.

If, based on placement, you are required to complete ENGCMP 0150 Workshop in Composition or ENGCMP 0152 ESL Workshop in Composition (or equivalent), you must earn a grade of "C minus" or higher in that course before enrolling in Seminar in Composition.

Students express concern over ‘Law and Deviance’ assignment in viral videos

The+Cathedral+of+Learning%0A

In a social media post that went viral on Wednesday evening, a student expressed her concerns about a recent assignment that asked students to write their “own fact scenario of an encounter between a man and a woman that ends up in rape.”

Peyton Gualtieri, a senior political science major, posted a video about the assignment on TikTok where it quickly gained attention and now has over one million views. In the video, she shared her shock and read the assignment for “Law and Deviance” posted by professor Denise Turner on Canvas.

The following day, the professor acknowledged her students’ concerns in an email to the class where she apologized, and updated the course assignment for that week.

“While this topic is undoubtedly challenging and difficult to engage on, my intention with the video and course reading was to bring rape culture and the pervasiveness of victim blaming and shaming to the class so we could have a constructive dialogue,” Turner said in her email to students.

University spokesperson Jared Stonesifer said Pitt is aware of student concerns and “has taken appropriate action internally to address them.” The University met with the professor to discuss how to approach difficult course topics in a mindful manner. Stonesifer added that the professor made herself available to discuss concerns with students, and that the University also contacted the students who expressed concern about the assignment.

In an interview with The Pitt News, Gualtieri said the assignment lacked sensitivity and did not provide students who may have experienced sexual assault an alternative assignment.

“I was completely taken aback and shocked that someone would ask people who could potentially be survivors of sexual assault in that class to basically recount what happened to them,” Gualtieri said. “That’s just so triggering, because some people aren’t ready to voice their traumas yet, and that’s almost just outing them as well.”

Gualtieri noted that along with writing about a scenario of sexual assault, the assignment also asked students a series of questions, including one that read, “One part of rape culture surrounds teaching women how not to be raped rather than for men to be taught not to rape. Suggest two ways on how men should be taught not to rape.”

“Sexual assault and rape can happen between anyone and anywhere even among people that know each other,” Gualtieri said. “It can happen anywhere between anyone, it doesn’t have to be man to woman, woman to man, it can be same sex. So there’s just a lot that was insensitive about the whole assignment.”

The updated assignment on Canvas no longer asks students to write about a sexual assault scenario, but still includes a question about how to teach men not to rape, which Gualtieri told The Pitt News is a “very biased and ambiguous question to ask of students.”

After the initial shock of the assignment, Gualtieri decided to bring the matter to university administration and contacted Carla Panzella, dean of students. While Panzella did provide Gualtieri with support resources, given that the incident involved an academic course assignment, she connected her with the Academic Dean’s office. Adam Leibovich, dean of the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and the College of General Studies, reached out to Gualtieri on Thursday afternoon offering to meet with her to discuss her concerns.

Liliana Orozco, a senior law, criminal justice and society major, also posted about the assignment on TikTok .

“At first the assignment caught me by surprise and I couldn’t get myself to write something like that,” Orozco told The Pitt News. “After emailing the professor with my concerns, she was kind and understood where I was coming from. I believe the professor had good intentions with the assignment. It was just coming across wrongly.”

Turner did not respond to a request for comment from The Pitt News. A University spokesperson said Turner is not releasing an additional statement aside from the email to her students.

In+a+social+media+post+that+went+viral+on+Wednesday+evening%2C+a+student+expressed+their+concerns+about+a+recent+assignment+they+were+given+in+a+%E2%80%9CLaw+and+Deviance%E2%80%9D+course+regarding+sexual+assault.+The+following+day%2C+the+professor+acknowledged+her+students+concerns%2C+apologized+and+posted+a+new+assignment.

Turner said the course syllabus notes that the class covers crimes of violence and “some of this material can be disturbing.” According to Gualtieri, the course material itself is not the issue rather the way in which students were asked to engage with the material.

“I’m very aware of law classes and how they operate. And I’m not sensitive to the topics that they talk about,” Gualtieri said. “I think the whole thing just should have been approached in a different manner. It wasn’t about the topic. It was about the wording of the assignment and just overall how she asked us to basically just make up a story where someone’s getting raped.”

The professor’s email also noted that she used the same assignment in previous classes as well, which led to “engaged, interactive discussion and learnings.”

In her initial video, Gualtieri received some backlash from commenters asking why she was trying to get the professor in trouble — something Gualtieri said she never intended to do.

“I wanted to bring light to the fact that there are going to be authority figures that you have to challenge because you can’t sit back and let these types of things occur when it can be seriously detrimental to people’s mental health and wellness,” Gualtieri said.

She said she wants to make sure the University is accountable for the assignments professors give to their students and that the professor knows the assignment is “very upsetting and insensitive.”

“While the intersection of academic freedom and free speech can be a challenging dynamic, the University does not shy away from controversial conversations and topics when they are relevant to the learning process and preparing our students,” Stonesifer said.

Gualtieri posted a follow up video on TikTok in which she shared screenshots of her emails with the deans and the email Turner sent out to the class. In the follow up video, she said is satisfied with the professor’s response, but that the incident “could have been avoided.”

Gualtieri said she is happy Turner apologized to students. She added that while she is working on finding the words she wants to say to the professor, she plans to reach out to Turner  to discuss her concerns directly.

However, she doesn’t think she will complete the updated assignment until after speaking directly with the professor.

“More explanation needs to go into what the requirements of the assignment are — which is part of the reason why so many people were triggered.”

Orozco said she appreciated that the professor reworded the assignment.

“If you’re a student and wonder if your voice is too small I can reassure you that it isn’t,” Orozco said. “Speak up against what you believe is incorrect, because clearly we can be the change.”

University of Minnesota is closing these 13 buildings ahead of pro-Palestinian rally

By Stephen Swanson

Updated on: April 29, 2024 / 5:04 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — Several buildings on the University of Minnesota's East Bank campus in Minneapolis are closed on Monday due to more pro-Palestinian demonstrations organized by students.

U officials announced early Monday afternoon that 13 buildings were closed at 2 p.m.:

  • Coffman Memorial Union
  • Hasselmo Hall
  • Johnston Hall
  • Kolthoff Hall
  • Morrill Hall
  • Murphy Hall
  • Northrup Auditorium
  • Vincent Hall
  • Walter Library
  • Weisman Museum

All other East Bank campus buildings will only be accessible to those with U Cards.

Organizers from UMN Divest announced on the rally's flier, "The time for escalation has come." They're calling for U students, faculty and community members to attend Monday's rally, which started at 2 p.m. outside Coffman Union.

Protesters also demonstrated on campus over several days last week , with eight students and a faculty member arrested on Tuesday morning for setting up an encampment on the Northrup Mall.

Demonstrators are calling for the U to divest from companies they say are aiding Israel in its "ongoing genocide in Gaza," including Boeing, General Dynamics, Honeywell and Lockheed Martin. They also want to ban those companies from recruiting on campus.

U officials released a statement on Monday's rally and closures, saying in part:

"We recognize that with freedom of expression comes responsibility. Protesters are expected to uphold the safety of others, not interfere with normal campus operations, and adhere to student and employee conduct policies. We urge everyone who engages to remain nonviolent, peaceful, and follow both state laws and University policies, including restrictions prohibiting tents and encampments on campus. Discriminatory vandalism and defacements such as stickers and graffiti—some of which promote violence—are hurtful to many and violate University and Twin Cities campus policies."

The Council of Graduate Students, an organization representing the U's grad students, called the short notice ahead of Monday's closures "unacceptable," and described it as an "attempt to halt the exercise of free speech and a right to demonstration."

"Not only are students, staff, and faculty being blocked from sites that they should have access to as members of this community, but additional steps like turning off water fountains and blocking restrooms show a commitment   not to safety but to escalation against protesters," the organization said in a statement.

Similar protests have spread across college campuses over the past few weeks , resulting in hundreds of arrests. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared the protests to rallies in Nazi Germany .

The demonstrations at the U have been unnerving for many Jewish students who fear the rhetoric used by protesters could lead to violence.

A former U staff member is also suing the school after she says she was fired for posting a pro-Palestinian message on Instagram.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry says more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in the aftermath of Hamas' attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 .

Last week, President Joe Biden signed an aid package to provide $26.4 billion to Israel .
