Teaching program :

Every year the STVA PhD promotes courses, lessons, seminars and workshops as integral part of the educational program of the STVA PhD students. Thus, these activities are mandatory. In addition, a mandatory 30 hours course of “Computer Science and Data analysis” with a final exam is provided every year. The STVA PhD students are also encouraged to attend specific international and national educational programs (meetings, seminars, Schools, etc.) concerning their specific research projects.

The courses of the STVA PhD program may be attended also by the PhD students from local and national programs and by other students. The STVA PhD program does not offer English language courses that are provided by CLA (Linguistic Centre of the university). The improvement of the English language skills of the STVA PhD students (verified during the evaluation interview of the candidates for the PhD scholarships) is constantly encouraged through participation in international meetings.

Thousands of students cross the border from Mexico to U.S. for school. Some are now set to graduate.

By Lauren Fichten

Updated on: May 11, 2024 / 2:16 PM EDT / CBS News

For most high school students, forgotten homework or gym clothes might entail a text to a parent. In Jose M. Vazquez's case, one forgotten item in particular— his birth certificate— meant no school that day.

Vazquez, 24, now a senior at San Diego State University Imperial Valley, has been crossing the U.S-Mexico border into California to attend school for around nine years. On May 12, he will graduate during a convocation in Mexicali, Mexico. His mother is attending the ceremony, put together by his college, something she would otherwise be unable to do because she can't get a visa to enter the United States.

img-8660.jpg

Vazquez is one of tens of thousands of transborder students, some as young as kindergarteners, who cross the border from Mexico into California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to pursue an education in the United States.

Transborder students have documentation that allows them to cross into the U.S. for school, like a passport, birth certificate or naturalization certificate, but living in Mexico is often more cost-effective and allows them to stay with their families. Students crossing the border during middle and high school often use a U.S. address, sometimes of a friend or family member, to avoid scrutiny from the school district.

Some students are U.S. citizens who have lived in Mexico the majority of their lives, while others return to Mexico after living in America for economic reasons or family reunification, said Laura Dicochea, a Ph.D candidate at Arizona State University, who researches transborder students.

"It's like a circular migration," Dicochea told CBS News.

The first in his family to graduate college, Vazquez reflected on his – and so many others – educational journey.

A transborder school commute

After his father was deported from the United States in 2006, Vazquez — who was born in Arizona — moved to Mexicali, Mexico when he began crossing the border a few years later to attend Central Union High School in El Centro, California.

Although he is a U.S. citizen, for Vazquez, like many transborder — or transfronterizo — students, living in Mexico with his family made sense because it is "so part of my culture, of me, that I think it's going to be so hard for me if I have to leave that," he said, noting that he's grateful to study in the United States.

During high school, Vazquez would wake up at 4:30 a.m. local time, wait at the border for around two hours, and arrive at school before his first class at 8 a.m. In 2019, he enrolled at Imperial Valley College, a community college 15 miles from Mexicali, before landing at San Diego State University Imperial Valley.

Vazquez's story mirrors that of Diana Lara Zamora, 21, now a senior at Arizona State University, who crossed into the U.S. from eighth grade through high school.

"I would cross three different states: Baja California, Sonora and Arizona every single day," Lara Zamora said.

She began attending school in the U.S. at 14, living with a family friend in San Luis, Arizona, at times. A typical school day for Lara Zamora began around 4 a.m. local time.

Her mom would drive 30 minutes to the border to drop off her and her younger sister, where they would wait among other students before walking 25 minutes or taking a cab to PPEP TEC High School in San Luis. During the winter, when seasonal farmworkers cross into Arizona, the wait at the border could be up to two hours.

"They're freezing," she said of the mornings. "I remember my nose being red."

img-8640.jpg

When Lara Zamora became a student at ASU in 2020, she secured on-campus housing, a meaningful experience that allowed her "to get to know people from around the world," Lara Zamora said.

Javier Melara, 21, who will be graduating alongside Vazquez in Mexico, has been crossing the border to attend school in California since he was 11.

"You have to face a lot of challenges," he said. "You have to face a lot of fear, a lot of pushback from some people."

Melara said that up until college, he would not share with his friends that he crossed the border daily out of concern that the school district might find out.

"I lived with the fear because some people were kicked out of school," he said, noting that it was something he saw happen to several classmates including a friend.

Lara Zamora told CBS News it doesn't "feel like for me transborder means the border itself."

"For me, it's more about having two cultures in yourself."

For transborder students, the benefits of living in Mexico mean regularly confronting the challenges of crossing the border: long wait times, tense interactions with U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents and backlash from community members— all against the backdrop of a nationwide migration debate centered on the border. This week, CBS News reported that illegal crossings along the U.S. southern border dropped by more than 40% this year to 129,000 crossings in April, defying historical trends. Though transborder students cross into the U.S. legally, the act of crossing the border makes them vulnerable to scrutiny.

Scrutiny, fear and then graduation

Another source of unease for Melara was his interactions with Customs and Border Protection officers.

"I feel like we have this ingrained fear, this constant fear, like flight or fight," Melara said of being sent often for secondary inspection, which allows officers to conduct additional questioning.

img-5239-1.jpg

Lara Zamora, noticing that her male friends were often pulled into secondary inspection, said that she was careful about her interactions with customs officers. Vazquez said that he felt that CBP personnel sought to intimidate— a consistent issue that tarnished his commute. "They think you're a criminal," he said.

CBS News reached out to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents for comment but didn't receive a response before publication.

Some students are put under a microscope by residents of their school district. For Lara Zamora, the frustration of community members who felt their taxes benefitted non-residents resulted in her transferring to a different high school.

"I felt like that was really unfair because it's not my fault," Lara Zamora said. "My parents don't want to be illegal immigrants here."

Lara Zamora, Vazquez and Melara graduate this month. Lara Zamora, plans to enroll in graduate school. Vazquez is taking a gap year to pursue his passion of performing as a drag queen. Melara plans to pursue a master's in education, someday achieve a doctorate degree and "dream without barriers," he said.

Vazquez's mother, who has attended his drag performances, will have the opportunity to see him on a different stage in the coming days at SDSU's graduation convocation in Mexicali. Since she was unable to cross the border to attend his high school graduation, Vazquez said having her at the ceremony in Mexico is important— particularly given that he is the first in his family to graduate.

Lara Zamora, also a first-generation student, says the realization that millions of other students have experienced similar challenges inspires her to help students like herself.

"First generation means that you are the first one, but hopefully you won't be the last one," she said.

UC Bearcat Bands en route to Egypt

Band to perform for strategic partner future university in egypt.

“Egypt gig band was NOT on my 2024 bingo card,” typed one member of the UC Bearcat Bands after receiving notice that a group was invited to perform for UC strategic partner institution Future University in Egypt (FUE).

A meme involving the C-paw among the pyramids soon followed, along with over 60 interested names on the sign-up sheet. Shortly after, students auditioned in a blind process — playing snippets of school songs called out in rapid succession — for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Whittled down to just 26 members of the marching band, director of bands Christopher Nichter and staff from UC International, the group will set off for a historic set of performances at FUE in mid-May.

For most U.S. band programs, travel is wholly dependent upon the success of athletic teams. International travel is an even rarer occasion, usually to locales with traditional parades, and takes months to years of planning.

However, because of FUE’s invitation, a portion of the UC marching band now has the opportunity to represent the University of Cincinnati far outside the walls of Nippert Stadium.

The invitation

UC and FUE have been in partnership since 2013, beginning with UC professors reviewing FUE’s curricula for international quality standards. The partnership has since blossomed into regular student and professor exchanges, joint research projects, seminars and annual audits.

But what interest did FUE have in an American marching band? According to Gihan El Basiouny, manager of international affairs at FUE, chairman and university owner Khaled Hassan Azazy watched a video of UC’s marching band online and was interested in bringing a group to play for FUE’s students.

Through the respective international offices, the question was asked: was it possible for a marching band to travel to Cairo? Band director Nichter was open to the opportunity from the start.

“When UC International reached out to us about potentially bringing a band to Cairo, I was surprised, but ready to take on the trip. Who passes up the opportunity to go to Egypt?” Nichter explained. “The Bearcat Bands does its fair share of travel, but certainly not like this. We are so thankful to Future University in Egypt for hosting our students and demonstrating such an interest in American marching band culture and campus spirit.”

With assistance from UC International, the logistics fell into place. Many students had to apply for their first passport. What began as a simple question became a packed itinerary full of cultural and musical experiences for the chosen band students.

Now, band staff and students are preparing for the journey of a lifetime. For Gabe Beebe, a baritone saxophone player, the trip will be his first international excursion.

“It seemed like a lofty idea in the beginning. And now, we have plane tickets,” said Beebe. “It won't quite be the full band thing — all 270 of us — but it's just gonna be fun. I get to go play saxophone in Egypt.”

The itinerary

Two days before takeoff, the students arrive back on campus for rehearsals—practicing drills for an unlined, outdoor courtyard instead of an American football field, running through their pep-tune repertoire and learning to work together as a much smaller group.

Then, they’re off for over a week. The journey to Cairo will take over a day between time changes, layovers and special baggage claim. Despite the daunting tasks ahead, the students are looking forward to the experience.

“It'll be awesome to see the raw excitement of the Egyptians,” noted Sara Marijolovic, a clarinetist in the band. “Here, Americans have a pre-formed opinion about band. This is something completely different, that's not very common.”

For two of the days, the band will play for students and faculty on FUE’s campus. Gameday favorites like Green Day’s “Holiday” or Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted” will likely make an appearance.

“Our hosts have asked us to really showcase the American collegiate experience, and that’s what we’re going to do,” said Nichter. “But we do have a few musical surprises to bridge between our cultures and show our gratitude for the experience. We’re all looking forward to this historic set of performances.”

Another two days will be filled with cultural adventures to museums, the Pyramids and even a dinner cruise on the Nile River. Throughout the rest of their time, band members and FUE students will connect and exchange cultures with one another.

Marijolovic notes that the combination of cultural exploration and exchange was a huge draw for her to sign up.

“I've always enjoyed studying ancient civilizations and never really thought that I would get the opportunity to go,” said Marijolovic. “But I am excited to get to talk to some students. I have a feeling the interactions will surprise me. And it will be nice to be able to share my experiences and see what they have to say about the U.S. and Cincinnati, too.”

The partnership between UC and FUE has always been unique, but this out-of-the-box cultural exchange continues to strengthen the relationship between the two universities. The performances have inspired the UC band members to broaden their horizons past the playing field — all the way to the Pyramids.

WEATHER ALERT

A special weather statement in effect for 5 regions in the area

Clark high graduate’s journey includes fleeing war, overcoming health problems, learning third language, syrian refugee defies the odds to graduate.

SAN ANTONIO – Hajar Abdulraham has overcome more than just the end-of-year tests to reach the graduation stage at Clark High School. Her journey began in Syria when she was only a toddler.

“They bombed the hospitals so we couldn’t stay in Syria. We lived in a school in Syria for two years. There was a lot of people that lived there. Every family had, like, a classroom,” Abdulraham said, remembering her life.

She said there was little to no food when she was in Syria.

“I remember running with my little sister to go get water from the river and came back and drank it, but it was very scary,” Abdulraham said.

Her family fled to Turkey to seek life-saving medical help for her and her little sister, as they both have beta thalassemia, a blood disorder.

“My mom left her family, left everyone to save us — me and my little sister,” Abdulraham said.

Her sister got the surgery she needed, but Abdulraham still needed one. She applied to become a U.S. refugee and was granted a visa when she turned 11.

Abdulrahman said with the help of many teachers, she was able to keep up with school, and the doctors and nurses continued to provide her with the treatment she needed.

Pagie Vetter, an English ESL teacher for Abdulraham and her sister, said the entire family persevered.

“She’s got a heart of gold. So, again, that’s the type of student that you just wish you could copy, paste and have a whole classroom full of,” Vetter said.

Abdulraham wanted a platform to thank all the teachers, doctors, and nurses who have been a part of her journey.

“It was our honor, and it was our joy to teach Hajar,” Vetter said.
