Thesis Title: Examples and Suggestions from a PhD Grad

When you’re faced with writing up a thesis, choosing a title can often fall to the bottom of the priority list. After all, it’s only a few words. How hard can it be?!

In the grand scheme of things I agree that picking your thesis title shouldn’t warrant that much thought, however my own choice is one of the few regrets I have from my PhD . I therefore think there is value in spending some time considering the options available.

In this post I’ll guide you through how to write your own thesis title and share real-world examples. Although my focus is on the PhD thesis, I’ve also included plenty of thesis title examples for bachelor’s and master’s research projects too.

Hopefully by the end of the post you’ll feel ready to start crafting your own!

Why your thesis title is at least somewhat important

It sounds obvious but your thesis title is the first, and often only, interaction people will have with your thesis. For instance, hiring managers for jobs that you may wish to apply for in the future. Therefore you want to give a good sense of what your research involved from the title.

Many people will list the title of their thesis on their CV, at least for a while after graduating. All of the example titles I’ve shared below came from my repository of academic CVs . I’d say roughly 30% of all the academics on that page list their thesis title, which includes academics all the way up to full professor.

Your thesis title could therefore feature on your CV for your whole career, so it is probably worth a bit of thought!

My suggestions for choosing a good thesis title

  • Make it descriptive of the research so it’s immediately obvious what it is about! Most universities will publish student theses online ( here’s mine! ) and they’re indexed so can be found via Google Scholar etc. Therefore give your thesis a descriptive title so that interested researchers can find it in the future.
  • Don’t get lost in the detail . You want a descriptive title but avoid overly lengthy descriptions of experiments. Unless a certain analytical technique etc was central to your research, I’d suggest by default* to avoid having it in your title. Including certain techniques will make your title, and therefore research, look overly dated, which isn’t ideal for potential job applications after you graduate.
  • The title should tie together the chapters of your thesis. A well-phrased title can do a good job of summarising the overall story of your thesis. Think about each of your research chapters and ensure that the title makes sense for each of them.
  • Be strategic . Certain parts of your work you want to emphasise? Consider making them more prominent in your title. For instance, if you know you want to pivot to a slightly different research area or career path after your PhD, there may be alternative phrasings which describe your work just as well but could be better understood by those in the field you’re moving into. I utilised this a bit in my own title which we’ll come onto shortly.
  • Do your own thing. Having just laid out some suggestions, do make sure you’re personally happy with the title. You get a lot of freedom to choose your title, so use it however you fancy. For example, I’ve known people to use puns in their title, so if that’s what you’re into don’t feel overly constrained.

*This doesn’t always hold true and certainly don’t take my advice if 1) listing something in your title could be a strategic move 2) you love the technique so much that you’re desperate to include it!

Why I regret my own choice of PhD thesis title

I should say from the outset that I assembled my thesis in quite a short space of time compared to most people. So I didn’t really spend particularly long on any one section, including the title.

However, my main supervisor even spelled out for me that once the title was submitted to the university it would be permanent. In other words: think wisely about your title.

What I started with

Initially I drafted the title as something like: Three dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration . Which I thought was nice, catchy and descriptive.

I decided to go for “correlative imaging” because, not only did it describe the experiments well, but it also sounded kind of technical and fitting of a potential pivot into AI. I’m pleased with that bit of the title.

What I ended up with

Before submitting the title to the university (required ahead of the viva), I asked my supervisors for their thoughts.

One of my well intentioned supervisors suggested that, given that my project didn’t involve verifying regenerative quality, I probably shouldn’t state cartilage regeneration . Instead, they suggested, I should state what I was experimenting on (the materials) rather than the overall goal of the research (aid cartilage regeneration efforts).

With this advice I dialled back my choice of wording and the thesis title I went with was:

Three dimensional correlative imaging for measurement of strain in cartilage and cartilage replacement materials

Reading it back now I’m reminder about how less I like it than my initial idea!

I put up basically no resistance to the supervisor’s choice, even though the title sounds so much more boring in my opinion. I just didn’t think much of it at the time. Furthermore, most of my PhD was actually in a technique which is four dimensional (looking at a series of 3D scans over time, hence 4D) which would have sounded way more sciency and fitting of a PhD.

What I wish I’d gone with

If I had the choice again, I’d have gone with:

Four-dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration

Which, would you believe it, is exactly what it states on my CV…

Does the thesis title really matter?

In all honesty, your choice of thesis title isn’t that important. If you come to regret it, as I do, it’s not the end of the world. There are much more important things in life to worry about.

If you decide at a later stage that you don’t like it you can always describe it in a way that you prefer. For instance, in my CV I describe my PhD as I’d have liked the title to be. I make no claim that it’s actually the title so consider it a bit of creative license.

Given that as your career progresses you may not even refer back to your thesis much, it’s really not worth stressing over. However, if you’re yet to finalise your thesis title I do still think it is worth a bit of thought and hopefully this article has provided some insights into how to choose a good thesis title.

My advice for developing a thesis title

  • Draft the title early. Drafting it early can help give clarity for the overall message of your research. For instance, while you’re assembling the rest of your thesis you can check that the title encompasses the research chapters you’re included, and likewise that the research experiments you’re including fall within what the title describes. Drafting it early also gives more time you to think it over. As with everything: having a first draft is really important to iterate on.
  • Look at some example titles . Such as those featured above!
  • If you’re not sure about your title, ask a few other people what they think . But remember that you have the final say!

Internet has gained status of as a dynamic commercial platform, more than a rich source of communication. It has intensified the complexities of the simple act of buying. “Google” has become the generic term for “searching information”. Traditional buying by individuals has taken the complex mixture of store, mall, television, internet, mobile- based shopping. Not only developed western-countries but even Asian countries, with poor infrastructure and low internet penetration rates, are equally adopting online buying. A review of selected published work in the area of “online buying” reveals that a wide range of topics have been explored and a rich theoretical framework in the form of different models is inexistent. This paper aims to present a comprehensive framework of the relevant literature available in the field of online buying behavior, in the form of different theories, models and constructs; and research results based on them. Tradition 5-staged model of consumer behavior has different stages- need identification, information search, evaluation of alternatives, buying and post purchase evaluation. Additionally, for online buying behavior the stages involved in online buying can be divided into: attitude formation, intention, adoption and continuation with online buying. Most important factors that influence online buying: attitude, motivation, trust, risk, demographics, website etc. are widely researched and reported. “Internet adoption” is widely used as foundation framework to study “adoption of online buying”. This study explores the differences between buyers and non-buyers in the adoption of electronic purchase intention in Colombia. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), a theoretical model that includes a set of five variables is established: performance expectations, effort expectations, social influence, facilitating conditions, and risk. The empirical results obtained from a final sample of 1,836 surveys emphasize the importance of performance expectations for both groups. Social Influence is another determinant of electronic purchase as well. In addition, an exploratory study of the moderating effect of the educational level and socioeconomic status for each group was performed, finding strong evidence of the influence of these demographic variables, which suggests that, as a conclusion that makes a great contribution to this country, access to electronic shopping is strongly related to educational level and socioeconomic status.

The intention to use E-Commerce tools among practitioners, especially in the Malaysian retail sector is not comprehensive as there are still many businesses choosing to use expensive traditional marketing. The research applies academic models and frameworks to the real life situation to develop a value proposition in the practical world by considering 11Street as the company under study and comparing it with Lazada as a leading competitor in the market. The objectives include identification of customers’ perception of a value for E-Commerce Businesses, followed by critical evaluation of existing value proposition of 11Street with Lazada to identify gap and finally to propose a new value proposition for 11street. This paper first identifies customer perceived value of E-Commerce followed by critical review of existing value proposition of 11Street and then comparing and contrasting with the leading player Lazada. By the end of this research, a new consumer value proposition proposal for 11Street proposed for consideration in matching with the Malaysian consumers’ value criteria.

This paper investigated factors that affect e-shopping acceptance among Nigerian students of tertiary institutions. The extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) model formulated by Venkatesh, Thong and Xu (2012) was adopted with some adjustments. The predictors of the model are performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value and habit. Since the researchers wanted to study technology adoption in the context of service delivery quality, a review of relevant literature suggested designing an integrated model that would determine the influence of technology adoption expectancy and service quality variables on e-shopping adoption could yield comprehensive results. To achieve that, three key predictors from the Service Quality (SERVQUAL) model namely, reliability, responsiveness and empathy were integrated into the conceptual framework, which yielded the research model that was employed to determine the factor(s) that significantly affect adoption of e-shopping. The objectives of this study were to identify online shopping strategies of the e-tailers, to determine the students' perception of e-shopping and to determine the relationship between the predictors and e-shopping adoption. The integrated model, from which 10 hypotheses of this study were derived, measured the responses of 380 undergraduate (university) students. A pre-tested and validated 40-item questionnaire was administered to the respondents. The reliability coefficient of the items ranged from .755 to .876, which was high. A conclusion was drawn and some recommendations for future research were outlined.

Adoption of Online shopping as being the latest purchasing channel in this decade of 24th century, particularly among the University students compared to the traditional shopping method as means of adoption of Technology Acceptance Method (TAM). Although, it is not clear what drives consumers to shop online and whether these numbers could be even increase if more attractive online stores were developed. This research seeks to critically explore and understand the social factors which influence the consumer intention to shop online, in student’s attitudinal behaviour. There has been an argument from different previous reviews concerning the objective and aim of this research (e.g. Davis, 1989; Monsuwe et al., 2004) but based on framework. So, therefore the study extend such framework which required re-examined and testing of the factors in order to make it more open for application in research context and also include students as consumers satisfaction to the definition of online shopping as recent factor to be consider. Mixed method strategy (quantitative and qualitative method) was adopted to explore and investigate validity and reliability of such social factors that drives consumers’ intention and attitude respectively of their demographic, role of product characteristics, situational factors, impact of previous experience and level of trust and satisfaction with web-stores. Based on the relevant literature review, therefore, the researcher carried out regression analysis test and thematic approach on the relative hypothesis. And the results of the regression analysis, manual statistical calculation and thematic approach (pattern) demonstrate that the social factors influence students’ intention and attitude toward online shopping with; (a) age and gender as basic factors, (b) product types like ticket/holiday booking and fashion, (c) ease of use, navigation and flexibility of web-site (d) usefulness of available information, effective for searching from various site and enjoyment from previous experience and, (d) quick delivery, problem solving with safety and security was found as satisfaction and trust of not just shopping presently but also using internet to shop in future.

Most of the teenagers nowadays, prefer to start a business online. E-commerce or electronic commerce is buying or selling goods through the use of technology. There were 47.3 million users of e-commerce sites in the Philippines based on Statistics Portal. Because it's more convenient and much easier to use, it can avoid heavy traffics, hot weather or any instances that may cause stress. But, even though online selling has more advantages than the other businesses. It still has difficulties like other business enterprises. The researchers sought to find ways on how to resolve those difficulties so that they will have knowledge on how to overcome the challenges that they may experience. In this study, the researchers used descriptive design to explain the difficulties in online selling. The researchers also used convenient sampling technique as we conducted our survey to the ABM strand who were willing to participate. The respondents were the students who are online sellers only and the students who had been experienced online selling. Only fifty (50) respondents from the said school and strand were included in this study. The researchers used questionnaire as a research instrument for the researchers to be able to gather the data's and the information needed in this study. Likert scale is for measuring the attitudes or opinions.As the result of the findings regarding the difficulties encountered in online selling. The result shows that, respondentsare agreed that all the variables are the difficulties may encounter in online selling. The researchers recommends the Grade 12 students who wants to be an online seller, they must attend seminars regarding online selling for them to be able to have knowledge on how to manage their Online Business. And this study will be also recommended to the teachers. The teachers should use their position to give advice or teach their students that who wants to enter in this kind of business, on how to overcome difficulties in terms of online selling. For the customers they must have a good attitudes and behaviors for them to be able to avoid flaws. And lastly for the online sellers, online sellers should have a good communication skills to attract the customers. Online Sellers should to know what to improve marketing strategies. Ask other people what network is stable in your area to prevent slow connection of internet so that negotiating with your customers will not be interrupted.
