The university journey of fresh RMIT graduate Ngo Viet Luong is one marked by resilience and a growth mindset.

Winning the highly coveted RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Award, an honour presented to only two students of each graduating class for their academic excellence and community contributions...

Being offered a full-time job as a Project Management Officer at Vietnam’s leading automotive company VinFast before having officially graduated...

Those achievements had seemed far-fetched to Ngo Viet Luong when he first started university over three years ago.

Ngo Viet Luong receives award on stage

The freshly minted Bachelor of Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) graduate revealed that throughout his time in primary, middle and high school, he was mostly regarded by his classmates and teachers as a student with a mild learning disability.

“I’d like to compare myself to a sea turtle – slow but extremely resilient and consistent,” Luong said.

“I’ve never been fast in my work – it usually takes me longer to finish a task compared to my friends. However, I can maintain consistent quality in my work, and I never give up in the face of challenges.”

Growing up in a small town near Hanoi with limited educational resources, Luong’s path to RMIT University was fuelled by a relentless pursuit of knowledge.

This relentlessness led to academic accolades, including the RMIT Academic Achievement Scholarship for Current Students and a GPA of 3.6/4.0. He was one of ten Vietnamese representatives in the highly selective McKinsey Consulting Fellowship Program in 2023, and interned for Big4 company PwC’s Operations Consulting division.

Beyond academic and industry experience, Luong’s engagement with the student community around him was deep and impactful. He was a Program Tutor for more than two years, helping fellow students improve their academic performance, and participated in various initiatives for students.

He is, however, most proud of his role as the Founder and President of the RMIT Innovation & Entrepreneurship Club (IEC).

IEC group photo in front of VinFast gate

The birth of IEC came from what Luong considered one of his life's lowest points. In April 2023, he and his team faced a significant setback in a nationwide student competition. They had dedicated months to it with a single-minded focus, yet their efforts did not bear the fruit they had hoped for.

“In the days that followed, I began each morning with a profound sense of loss, burying my face in my pillow, mourning for the time and efforts that seemed wasted,” Luong recalled.

“But a pivotal thought struck me – I couldn't let sadness define my life. I mustered all the resilience and motivation I had left and set my sights on a long-held goal: to establish a dedicated club for entrepreneurial-minded students at RMIT.”

Luong explained that despite the evident passion and ambition for startups and entrepreneurship among students, no club back then specifically catered to those interests. Identifying this gap, as he too was seeking such a community, he was motivated to establish IEC.

He found establishing IEC challenging but immensely fulfilling. It involved assembling a trustworthy team of friends, dreaming up ambitious plans, engaging in passionate yet respectful debates to refine those plans, and learning to multitask in ways he never had before.

“With IEC, we have made significant contributions to the RMIT student body and the broader community. I am eternally proud of the club. It’s a testament to how resilience and determination can turn failure into a foundation for success,” he said.

For Luong, graduation is not an end, but the start of his journey towards entrepreneurial success and global impact.

“My university journey has been a truly transformative experience. It is a narrative of a boy who arrived with curiosity and now leaves as a man with knowledge, skills, and a deep sense of responsibility towards the University and society,” he said.

His ambition is to set up a company of his own that can make a positive impact on people’s lives, however big or small.

“I believe everyone has a mission in life. For me, the mission that I've identified for myself is to make people's lives better, easier, and more convenient.

“The past three years have helped me cultivate resilience, adaptability, and a network of diverse perspectives. With these foundations, I feel equipped to embrace the unknown and make meaningful contributions to the world,” Luong said.

Meet Ngo Viet Luong - Vice-Chancellor's Award winner, RMIT Class of 2024

My name is Ngo Viet Luong, majoring in Logistics & Supply Chain Management. I’m honoured to receive this year’s Vice Chancellor’s Award.

One of my most memorable and impactful contributions to RMIT can relate to the establishment of the RMIT Innovation & Entrepreneurship Club (IEC). I founded the IEC driven by a single, compelling reason: the absence of a dedicated club for entrepreneurial-minded students at RMIT.

Despite the evident passion and ambition for startups and entrepreneurship among students, no club back then specifically catered to these interests. I consider IEC my biggest contribution to RMIT University as it aligns with RMIT's ambition to promote entrepreneurial spirits among students.

Graduation is not an end, but a transformative journey. RMIT has helped me cultivate resilience, adaptability, and a network of diverse perspectives.

Thank you, RMIT, for shaping me into a confident leader of tomorrow.

Now, as we embark on new endeavors beyond these walls, let us remember that every dream, every achievement, and every transformation begin right here, in this moment. All journeys start here.

From footy dreams to leadership in the construction sector, RMIT alum Andy has kicked goals when it comes to showing resilience and determination.

The words 'We have grit’ feature on the lobby wall at the Multiplex office in London, the workplace of RMIT alum Andy Campbell.

To have grit is one of the leading global construction company’s values, and it’s a trait lived and breathed by Andy, who is one of the Mulitplex’s leaders in his role as Regional Director .

He currently spends his time between London and Scotland, where he’s focused on the delivery of a major project in Glasgow, for client and tenant JP Morgan.

Andy’s career in construction had its foundations set at RMIT, where he completed a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) in 2009 followed by a Bachelor of Applied Science (Project Management), now known as the Bachelor of Project Management (Honours) , in 2011.

Finding the silver lining

Andy’s journey from his studies to his leadership role at the UK hub of one of Australia’s premier construction companies has been built on courage, drive and persistence – in other words, grit.

“Growing up in Victoria in Australia, I spent most of my teenage years focused on a professional career in Australian Rules Football, and was fortunate enough to spend a pre-season training at Junction Oval with the Melbourne Football Club,” he said.

“And when that didn’t work out for one reason or another, I knew I had to change tack.

“I decided to enrol in RMIT’s diploma program in building and construction, where I studied as hard as I could for two years and then transitioned to the RMIT Bachelor of Applied Science.”

rmit vietnam phd scholarship

Expanding horizons

It was during Andy’s bachelor’s degree when the opportunity to take part in an RMIT study tour to Dubai and Hong Kong caught his eye.

“One of the site visits in Dubai was organised by Multiplex’s Dubai office,” he said.

“Being able to see major projects in person crystallised so much of what we were doing as part of our studies, and we had the opportunity to talk with the Multiplex team while we were there.

“Prior to joining the study tour, I knew that Multiplex was the premier construction company in delivering complex buildings in cities,” Andy said.

“I had always been eager to join the company as well as having the desire to work overseas, and I expressed this interest when I was on the study tour in Dubai.”

On return to Australia, Andy stayed in touch with a member of the Multiplex team in Dubai: “I was really persistent. I'd send him an email every two to three months to ask him how the market was doing and whether any new projects have been secured.”

A few years later, Andy joined a second RMIT study tour to Singapore as well as back to Dubai, where he learnt more about the market and the potential for any opportunities.

Andy’s determination paid off and within six months he was successful in his application for an opening at Multiplex in Dubai, and he made the move from Melbourne to the UAE in 2012.

From one success to another

After several years in various roles in Dubai and a portfolio of award-winning construction projects under his belt, Andy was the recipient of the Multiplex John Roberts AO Scholarship.

Named after the company’s founder, the scholarship supports emerging leaders to increase their knowledge and find better ways of working that they can share with their colleagues.

“It was this opportunity that enabled me to meet people from other regions at Multiplex, including back in Australia, Canada and here in the UK,” Andy said.

“That was in 2016 and I’ve been here ever since.”

A continuous learner

When he’s not onsite in Glasgow or in the office in London, Andy continues to learn and is currently undertaking an Executive MBA at the London Business School.

He’s also active in giving back to the profession as a member of several industry advisory boards and committees, including his role as the Past Chair of the NextGen London Committee for the British Council for Offices, and his current position as Chair of the UK Chapter for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

Andy continues to give back to RMIT, and now talks to students on RMIT study tours himself.

“For students looking to have an international career, my advice is to get some exposure to industry early on and while you’re still studying, in whatever role that might be,” he said.

“My very first role was a construction labourer, which enabled me to put something down on my CV and subsequently set me up for a successful cadetship application.

“I would of course always recommend taking up the chance to join a study tour and using it as an opportunity to build your network,” Andy said.

“You can also reach out to people that you might know that have worked overseas. And don’t be afraid to contact them directly to see what opportunities might be on offer.”

RMIT has launched an official UK Alumni Chapter to enable RMIT graduates to connect with each other digitally and in-person, share ideas, offer support, and continue to strengthen RMIT’s global alumni community. Meet more RMIT alumni in the UK like Andy Campbell by joining the Chapter Official LinkedIn Group .
