Each year as high school students across the country get ready to graduate, they start thinking about what they want to do afterward. Many of these students will continue their academic pursuits at the college level. However, in order to get there, students will need to put together a college application packet that showcases their ability to succeed in a more challenging educational environment. Varsity Tutors has tutoring options that can help you. Typically, colleges require that students send them things like:

  • SAT or ACT scores
  • High school transcripts
  • A resume detailing extracurricular activity involvement
  • Personal statement and other essays

One of the most challenging parts of putting together a great college application packet is writing a great personal statement. If you'd like some help with this, you may want to sign up for personal statement tutoring. Contact Varsity Tutors to learn more about how college personal statement tutoring can help you reach your goals. Personal statements are important because it is one of the few chances you have to show the colleges you're applying to who you are as an individual. While your transcripts and standardized test scores can prove that you have done well academically in the past, a personal statement can show an admissions board where you hope to go in the future and how attending their school fits into that plan. A personal statement tutor can help you craft a compelling argument for why you should be accepted into the colleges you're applying to.

You and your personal statement tutor will meet together in a one-on-one learning environment, where your needs and goals always are the center of focus. Your tutor can help you with every step of the personal statement process. For example, you can get help with things like idea generation, the structure of your essay, your grammar and syntax, and anything else that you're struggling with.

If you're ready to get started with personal statement tutoring, you don't need to search online for "personal statement tutoring near me." Instead, reach out to Varsity Tutors to get connected quickly and easily with a tutor who can work around your scheduling needs and help you reach your personal statement goals. You can even work with your tutor online. This flexibility means that even the busiest students can take advantage of private tutoring for personal statements. Contact Varsity Tutors to get more information and get started!

How to Write a Personal Statement

A personal statement can be a key part of your college application, and you can really make yours shine by following a few tips.

[Featured Image] A lady with pink hair is holding a piece of paper with a laptop on her lap.

When you're applying to collegeā€”either to an undergraduate or graduate programā€”you may be asked to submit a personal statement. It's an essay that gives you the chance to share more about who you are and why you'd like to attend the university you're applying to. Ā

The information you provide in your personal statement can help build on your other application materials, like your transcripts and letters of recommendation, and build a more cohesive picture to help the admissions committee understand your goals.

In this article, we'll go over more about personal statements, including why they're important, what to include in one, and tips for strengthening yours.

What is a personal statement?

A personal statementā€”sometimes known as a college essay ā€”is a brief written essay you submit with other materials when applying to college or university. Personal statements tend to be most common for undergraduate applications, and they're a great opportunity for an admissions committee to hear your voice directly.

Many colleges and universities in the US, especially those using Common App , provide prompts for you to use. For example, "Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea" or "Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time" [ 1 ].Ā If the school you're interested in attending doesn't require prompts, you will likely want to craft a response that touches on your story, your values, and your goals if possible.

In grad school, personal statements are sometimes known as letters of intent , and go into more detail about your academic and professional background, while expressing interest in attending the particular program you're applying to.

Why is a personal statement important?

Personal statements are important for a number of reasons. Whereas other materials you submit in an application can address your academic abilities (like your transcripts) or how you perform as a student (like your letters of recommendation), a personal statement is a chance to do exactly that: get more personal.

Personal statements typically:

Permit you to share things that don't fit on your resume, such as personal stories, motivations, and values

Offer schools a chance to see why you're interested in a particular field of study and what you hope to accomplish after you graduateĀ

Provide an opportunity for you to talk about past employment, volunteer experiences, or skills you have that complement your studiesĀ

Allow colleges to evaluate your writing skillsĀ

Bring life to a college application package otherwise filled with facts and figuresĀ

How to write a personal statement.

As we mentioned earlier, you may have to respond to a prompt when drafting your personal statementā€”or a college or university may invite you to respond however you'd like. In either case, use the steps below to begin building your response.

Create a solid hook .

To capture the attention of an admissions committee member, start your personal statement with a hook that relates to the topic of your essay. A hook tends to be a colorful sentence or two at the very beginning that compels the reader to continue reading.

To create a captivating hook, try one of these methods:

Pose a rhetorical question.Ā

Provide an interesting statistic.Ā

Insert a quote from a well-known person.

Challenge the reader with a common misconception.Ā

Use an anecdote, which is a short story that can be true or imaginary.Ā

Credibility is crucial when writing a personal statement as part of your college application process. If you choose a statistic, quote, or misconception for your hook, make sure it comes from a reliable source.

Follow a narrative.

The best personal statements typically read like a story: they have a common theme, as well as a beginning, middle, and end. This type of format also helps keep your thoughts organized and improves the flow of your essay.

Common themes to consider for your personal statement include:

Special role models from your past

Life-altering events you've experienced

Unusual challenges you've faced

Accomplishments you're especially proud of

Service to others and why you enjoy it

What you've learned from traveling to a particular place

Unique ways you stand out from other candidates

Be specific.

Admissions committees read thousands of personal statements every year, which is why being specific on yours is important. Back up your statements with examples or anecdotes.

For instance, avoid vague assertions like, "I'm interested in your school counseling program because I care about children." Instead, point out experiences you've had with children that emphasize how much you care. For instance, you might mention your summer job as a day camp counselor or your volunteer experience mentoring younger children.

Don't forget to include detail and vibrancy to keep your statement interesting. The use of detail shows how your unique voice and experiences can add value to the college or university you're applying to.

Stay on topic.

It's natural to want to impress the members of the admissions committee who will read your personal statement. The best way to do this is to lead your readers through a cohesive, informative, and descriptive essay.

If you feel you might be going astray, ensure each paragraph in your essay's body supports your introduction. Here are a few more strategies that can help keep you on track:

Know what you want to say and do research if needed.Ā

Create an outline listing the key points you want to share.

Read your outline aloud to confirm it makes logical sense before proceeding.Ā

Read your essay aloud while you're writing to confirm you're staying on topic.

Ask a trusted friend or family member to read your essay and make suggestions.

Be true to your own voice.

Because of the importance of your personal statement, you could be tempted to be very formal with structure and language. However, using a more relaxed tone is better than you would for a classroom writing assignment.Ā

Remember: admissions committees really want to hear from you . Writing in your own voice will help accomplish this. To ensure your tone isn't too relaxed, write your statement as if you were speaking to an older relative or trusted teacher. This way, you'll come across as respectful, confident, and honest.

Tips for drafting an effective personal statement.

Now that you've learned a little about personal statements and how to craft them, here are a few more tips you can follow to strengthen your essay:

1. Customize your statement.

You don't have to completely rewrite your personal statement every time you apply to a new college, but you want to make sure you tailor it as much as possible. For instance, if you talk about wanting to take a certain class or study a certain subject, make sure you adjust any specifics for each application.

2. Avoid cliches.

Admissions committees are ultimately looking for students who will fit the school, and who the school can help guide toward their larger goals. In that case, cliches can get in the way of a reviewer understanding what it is you want from a college education. Watch out for cliches like "making a difference," "broadening my horizons," or "the best thing that ever happened to me."

3. Stay focused.

Try to avoid getting off-track or including tangents in your personal statement. Stay focused by writing a first draft and then re-reading what you've written. Does every paragraph flow from one point to the next? Are the ideas you're presenting cohesive?

4. Stick to topics that aren't controversial.

It's best not to discuss political beliefs or inappropriate topics in your essay. These can be controversial; ideally, you want to share something goals- or values-driven with an admissions committee.

Polish your writing skills on Coursera.

A stellar personal statement starts with stellar writing skills. Enhance your writing ability with a writing course from a top university, like Good with Words: Writing and Editing from the University of Michigan or Writing a Personal Essay from Wesleyan University. What Makes a Great Personal Statement for Tutoring Jobs

Tip 1 : be convincing, tip 2 : be truthful, tip 3 : beyond academics.

There are a few important points you should look out for when evaluating a personal statement - either as an applicant, or as an approver!

For a neophyte in this online tutoring or home tuition arena, writing a captivating (yet truthful) personal statement could be quite a challenge to begin with. It's a matter of "selling" yourself by writing self-praising sentences about your prowess, about how genial you are as an individual, and about how you possess all the necessary qualities that befit a great tutor. Though this may sound a little comical, it is absolutely necessary to present yourself as the right tutor for children out there who require the help; the extra push to propel forward in their academics. The following tips are guidelines that budding tutors can follow in order to set up a convincing profile that contains a wholesome personal statement.

YES, this sounds like an obvious advice that anyone would give...but what does "being convincing" actually mean? What does it entail?

It is essential to ensure that your tutor profile does not look banal, making you seem like a taciturn, hostile and formidable individual. Those who view your profile should

not feel ambivalent, but rather, they should be sure that you are the perfect tutor for their child. Apart from filling in the details about your educational background and stating your area of teaching expertise, you should write (not a huge essay; usually there is a limited word count) about what makes you a special teacher; about what makes you stand out.

It's important to stand out through a personal statement.

Remember that in the internet platform, just like you, there are thousands of tutors who have the profiles set up, hoping to attract students. You need to incorporate reasons into your write-up as to why you are the kind of tutor students are looking for. Being convincing really depends on the kind of words you utilise in your writing, for example, "friendly", "approachable", "amicable" and "patient", which gives an accurate macroview as to what kind of a tutor you are, it radiates a sense of trustworthiness, and makes you appear to be a committed and responsible home tutor.

Though the benefits of a convincing personal statement may seem incorporeal, it really isn't. This is what will herald a great change in your tutoring career, as more students would want you to be their tutor and there comes the opportunity for you to expand, grow and thrive in this arena of yours.

Hold your horses...! Nobody is insinuating that you would weave in blatant lies in your personal statement. But let's be pragmatic and admit that we might take some creative liberty while writing an elaborate profile about ourselves in order to be the attractive one among the lot. What is important is that this should not go off tangent, and should still stick within the boundaries of reality. Nobody should say that the qualities you have mentioned in your profile are moot points; exaggerated and untruthful statements.

It may seem like an innocuous attempt to promote yourself, but to others, especially your students, they might feel deceived. This is impermissible in any field, let alone teaching, especially since students look up to their teachers for inspiration and genuine guidance. State what you are in your personal statement in the most convincing and captivating way but still convey the true essence of who you are as a tutor. Truthfulness is what is truly attractive and it will serve you well in your tutoring career.

We all know that it takes a village to raise a child. In this modern day and age, the ā€œvillageā€ we live in consists of school tutors, parents, home tutors, relatives, mutual acquaintances, peers, and surroundings, filled with strangers; all of whom have their own way of shaping a child's character and influencing the child's intelligence. Tutors have a pivotal role in moulding a child's perspectives, building on his or her knowledge and inculcating moral values and virtues.

It's important for tutors to act as a child's moral compass, not just their academic one.

Under the carapace of a great personal statement, apart from all the details about your expertise and your amicability as a tutor, you have to include the fact that you really do care about the personal well-being of your students (and being truthful to that statement, you have to show that through your actions too). Today parents expect a home tutor to not only be their child's educator, but also to be their moral compass and to be a trusted companion. This is mainly because of the fact that in today's fast-paced modern life, parents do not get to spend quality time with their children and thus, having another trusted adult to guide their child would be a great help.

Understanding the gravity of this current day and age's situations and circumstances, as a tutor, it will be advantageous for you to state the fact that you care about your student's personality, moral values and well-being.

ALL IN ALL , following the tips mentioned above, you will be thankful for your precocity on this subject matter and this will push to another stratosphere in your tutoring career for sure.

My name is Elina Pampapathi and I am a Third Year Medical Student at Queen Mary University of London. I am a Graduate Entry Medic with a background in Paramedic Science for which I received a First. I received 4/4 offers for my application; two Graduate Entry Course offers, and two Direct Entry course offers – so I can help either prospective Graduates or Direct Entry students. Additionally, I received within the top 5% globally for my UCAT and have many great hints and tips to help maximise your score. I have just finished my 1st year of Medicine and received a merit for my exam results, which is within the top 20% of my cohort – I had to change my study techniques a lot when I came into medicine and can provide some useful perspective to preparing for a medical degree. Hi, I’m Fran! I am a postgraduate student at UCL, studying for MSc Science Technology and Society, which I hope to finish in 2024. In 2022, I graduated with a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, where I specialised in Materials Science in my final year. I’m super passionate about science, and love science communication and policy-making. In my spare time, I enjoy rock-climbing, reading, board games, and music. I have been tutoring privately for around 4 years now, and I love it! I enjoy spreading my passion for science and love discussing new and interesting topics and issues in science with my students. I think it’s really important to engage children and young people with science, to encourage the next generation of medics, mathematicians, scientists, and engineers.

My name is Nadia and I am a medical student currently studying at Newcastle University. I know that the interview cycle is tough for a lot of people, but I am here to help, having extensive experience with tutoring interviews, both for multiple mini-interviews (MMI) and panels.

I tell all my students one thing: there are a plethora of questions these interviewers can ask you, and I cannot possibly teach you all of them. I am not teaching you answers to these interview questions, I am teaching you how to approach them. So regardless of what weird interview questions you get, you will be able to answer them with confidence. My students have had great success in getting into their university of choice, and have been satisfied with my teaching method, and I manage to create great rapport with the students.

I am also experienced in teaching other subjects, such as mathematics, biology, chemistry, UCAT, BMAT, and the extended project qualification (EPQ).

As a current MSt student in English Literature (1830-1914) at the University of Oxford, with a solid academic background including a BA in Comparative Literature from Queen Mary University of London, I am thrilled to offer my expertise and guidance in English Language and Literature, Italian Language and Literature, and Beginners Latin, as well as help with university admissions. I am bilingual, fluent in Italian and English, and since 2016, I have been tutoring students aged 10 to 19 in various subjects. Hello ! I am a multinational (Spanish and British) second year architecture student, currently at Cambridge University, who comes equipped with a highly interdisciplinary background and passion for learning new skills. My interests within architecture are currently enormously varied because the subject itself is so vast! , but primarily lie in museum design and curation, sustainability and bamboo construction, and theoretical discourse on phenomenology and space.

Having been panel interviewed and successful for a number of committee roles and achievements at different scales (Head Girl, university applications… as well as current internship interviews) I am well versed in interview technique and experience. I am able to provide general Oxbridge interview/ mock interviews for humanities subjects as there is a substantial overlap with what I study in my course (particularly geography, history, HSPS, archeology). I specialise in architecture, and have made multiple professional portfolios (and continuously make one every term for my degree), with an eye for detail, and so as well as mock interviews and general advice, I will happily advise in this key area.

I did five A levels, six AS levels, so have been through pretty much most academic scenarios and can provide tips for efficient revision, and efficient time management, in the similar way that worked for me.

My highly interdisciplinary architecture degree also means I am trained in professional presentation skills (persuasive presenting of work at least four times every week to a crowd), graphic skills in rendering, photography and videography, and confidence in all Adobe software. Analytical, academic essays are also a substantial part of the course and I further hone my writing skills writing university articles for the Cambridge Language Collective, Climate Journals and producing graphics for an Arts Magazine.

I am a Masters University graduate who holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Education whose specialties are in English and History. I teach secondary level students right up to post graduates. My areas of specialty are focused on anything related to English, be it language, literature or linguistics. I have over 3 years’ of experience in the education filed and can proudly attest to how well the students I’ve taught and tutored in the past have passed the subjects I’ve taught. I make sure that I cater to the needs of my student and tailor my lessons around their individual needs and capabilities. I am an avid believer of learner focused teaching in order to hear the views of the student. I am quite friendly and at the same time I also can be firm so that all objectives will be achieved in order for the student to grasp concepts and pass with excellent grades at the end of the day.

I’m Zeenat and I am currently in my final year at the University of Manchester’s dental school. I love getting involved in different societies and making the most of university life. I have a huge passion for helping people ‘get in’ to high level degrees. I have experience being on the interview panel for medicine and dental MMI interviews at Manchester so have an idea of what universities are looking for in candidates!

I got accepted into the University of Birmingham, Kings College London, University of Manchester for BDS dentistry programmes.

I am a graduate of King’s College London, with a degree in Critical Theory. Sociology and social philosophy, as well as literature and film, formed major parts of my academic research at university. I am a keen, critically-oriented tutor, eager to interact with a breadth of students. Education is the only space where a wealth of ideas may circulate amongst people with no inherent hierarchy, and I want to channel this potential into productive, progressive goals. I thrive on building new connections and engaging in thoughtful conversations, encouraging practices of mutual respect and open-mindedness no matter whom I am talking to. Being a tutor does not mean that one is “superior” to those they are tutoring; instead, it merely signals more experience which, when communicated with nuance and complexity, allows for a two-way exchange rather than a top-down teacher-student relationship. I look forward to working with you!

Hi there, I’m Louis and I’m currently in my second year studying medicine at Leicester. My journey into medicine was not simple and I’ve come to realise that’s often the case for many of us.

Education holds immense value, particularly in the medical field. However I advocate for a holistic approach, one that prioritises excelling academically while also nurturing a well-rounded life. It’s crucial to be the best version of ourselves to effectively aid others in the long run.

Throughout my academic journey, I’ve honed qualities like discipline, efficiency, and simplicity. These traits, finely sharpened in the rigours of medical school, have contributed significantly to my personal growth. I owe this growth to medical school and I want others to feel what I feel.

My aspiration extends beyond personal development. I’m keen on guiding aspiring medical students, sharing insights to help them avoid the pitfalls and challenges I encountered. I believe aiding others in their journey to medical school not only fosters their growth as professionals but also nurtures their personal evolution. It’s about shaping not just future medics, but well-rounded individuals who can make a meaningful difference.

'I wish I'd found blt earlier - I'd already produced six drafts of my personal statement and wasn't happy with any of them. My tutor guided me through some example statements, helped me edit and restructure one of my earlier (better!) drafts, based on a template we created together, then we tidied it all up and it was all over! I'm so grateful!' (Bryn Griffiths)

'I didn't know how to start or write a personal statement, as English has never been my strong point. My tutor helped me brainstorm ideas and then plan, structure and write it. He was very clear about what I should and shouldn't include. We then made sure there were no mistakes. I was really pleased with my final draft and I'm sure it played a big part in getting me offers from the Uni's I applied to. THANKS SO MUCH!' (Paddy Hughes)

'I needed someone to read through my personal statement and reassure me that it was what Admission Officers were looking for. We made a few structural changes, editing and adding a little, and then it was ready to go. I got the offers I was hoping for! Thanks again!' (Peter Hall)

With the competition for university places becoming increasingly fierce, a well-structured, memorable personal statement which highlights achievements and ambitions, and captures the attention of admissions tutors, can mean the difference between being offered a place at university and struggling through the clearing process.

An outstanding personal statement should be a true reflection of personality, skills and experience, as well as a passion for a chosen university course. It is this uniqueness that universities are looking for when offering places. We do not re-write personal statements. Instead, we advise on how to produce and perfect them.

Whether a tutee is about to begin, has initial ideas, has a working draft or even a final draft, our personal statement tutors will add significant value. We help ensure that tutees include the right information, expressed concisely and in the right layout. We understand what admissions tutors are looking for in a personal statement and work with our tutees so that they can feel confident that the personal statement they have produced is the best it can possibly be.

Our personal statement tutors  focus on the following five key areas:

Discussion of the variety of approaches to writing a personal statement;

Content which should and should not be included;

The best layout to use;

How best to convey and structure thoughts and ideas;

Proofreading a final draft to ensure that there are no errors (or weaknesses) in spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure or clarity of expression.

The number of tutorials a tutee will require will vary and will depend on the standard of any draft statements provided, the course and universities applied to, and whether any additional help is needed in choosing a course or university. Please click here for help in choosing the right course or university.

We have helped our tutees produce and perfect personal statements leading to admission into universities throughout the UK, including Oxbridge and the Russell Group , as well as many American and other overseas universities.

We tutor in the comfort of your home,  online (via Skype, Zoom, Teams or FaceTime) , or at the home of one of our specialist personal statement tutors , at a time that is most convenient for you.

We currently tutor in person within a 10 mile radius of Bournemouth town centre, including Christchurch, Parkstone, Poole, Southbourne, Westbourne, Boscombe, Moordown, Winton, Charminster, Ferndown, Wimborne, and Branksome.

Private Personal Statement & UCAS Tutors

Uk university personal statement advice.

As competition for university places continues to increase, the Personal Statement section of your UCAS application has never been so important. At Fleet Tutors our experienced tutors will help you create a concise, well-structured statement that will highlight your achievements and ambitions, and capture the attention of admissions tutors at your preferred university.

A Personal Statement needs to cover four key aspects in only 4000 characters:

  • Why have you chosen the particular course you are applying for?
  • How are you qualified to study this course?
  • Why should you be chosen above other candidates?
  • What do you envisage doing with your degree once you have graduated?

You may have already drafted your personal statement which you would like a tutor to review, making suggestions for improvements and enhancements; or you may prefer to have an initial in-depth discussion with a tutor who will guide you in establishing the key facts, which you can then craft into the perfect personal statement. Whatever level of support and advice you require, our tutors have the experience and knowledge required to enable you to submit your UCAS application with confidence.

The amount of time a tutor requires to create the perfect Personal Statement varies from student to student and can depend on the standard of any draft statement you provide, the course and the university you are applying to, and whether you also need help in choosing which course and/or university is the right one for you. Therefore we charge clients at an hourly rate to reflect the amount of work required for each individual student’s needs and to enable us to provide a bespoke service.

Our tutors have experience of all UK universities including Oxbridge and Russell group. We also have an expert tutor who can provide advice for admission to American Universities, and tutors with experience of admissions to other overseas universities.

Showcasing Your Strengths: Writing an Effective Nursing Personal Statement

  • Tristram Lewis-Stempel
  • June 2, 2023

Personal Statement

Nursing Personal Statement Overview

The nursing personal statement is a crucial component of your application to nursing school . It serves a dual purpose: it provides a platform to express your interest in the field of nursing and it offers an opportunity for admissions committees to get to know you on a personal level. In other words, it is your opportunity to tell your story, to shine a light on your experiences, and to showcase your passion for nursing.

The structure of the nursing personal statement can be broken down into several key components, although these can be tailored to your individual experiences and the specific prompts provided by different nursing schools.

  • Introduction: The introduction is your opportunity to grab the reader’s attention. Start with an engaging anecdote, question, or statement that gives insight into your motivation to pursue nursing. This should lead seamlessly into your thesis or main argument: why you are passionate about nursing and what you will bring to the profession.
  • Body: In the body of your personal statement, illustrate your interest and commitment to nursing through your experiences and reflections. You can discuss relevant coursework, clinical experiences, research, volunteer work, or personal experiences. Remember to show rather than tell; use specific examples to bring your experiences to life and to demonstrate your ability to reflect on your experiences. This reflection shows maturity and a deep understanding of the nursing profession.
  • Conclusion: Your conclusion should reiterate your commitment to nursing and highlight your main points. It should leave the reader with a clear understanding of your unique perspective on nursing and why you are a strong candidate for their program.

There are a few key points to keep in mind while crafting your nursing personal statement. First, be authentic and personal. The statement is not just about stating facts about your experiences, but about showing who you are. Second, be reflective, not just descriptive. Reflection on your experiences, growth, and learning shows your capacity for critical thinking, a crucial skill in nursing. Lastly, make sure your statement is well-organised and free of grammar or spelling errors. A clear, well-written statement shows that you can communicate effectively, another essential skill for nurses.

Nursing School Admissions Overview

Securing a place in a UK nursing programme can be an arduous yet fulfilling journey, requiring a mix of academic credentials, relevant experience, and personal commitment to the profession.

Firstly, letā€™s focus on academic qualifications. Most nursing programmes in the UK require a minimum of five GCSEs (A-C), including English, Mathematics, and a Science subject. At the A-level, you’ll usually need at least two A-levels, preferably in related subjects. However, entry requirements vary among universities, so it’s advisable to check the specific requirements of your preferred institutions.

Degree courses in nursing fall into four primary categories: adult nursing, children’s nursing, mental health nursing, and learning disability nursing. Some universities also offer dual field courses, allowing you to specialise in two of the aforementioned fields. Choosing the right course will depend on your areas of interest and career aspirations.

Application to nursing schools in the UK is streamlined through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Your UCAS application will include your academic record, a personal statement, and a reference. It’s important to remember that places are limited, and competition can be fierce, which places significant weight on the quality of your personal statement.

Work experience in healthcare is highly valued during the admissions process. This could include volunteering at a local hospital, care home, or community service. The aim is to demonstrate your commitment to and understanding of the nursing profession. Additionally, it allows you to develop and showcase skills such as communication, empathy, and teamwork, which are essential in nursing.

Lastly, if your application is successful, you’ll be invited for an interview . This could be a one-on-one, group, or Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. Some schools have also incorporated situational judgement tests (SJTs) or numeracy tests into their selection process. These interviews and tests assess your understanding of the nursing role, ethical judgement, communication skills, and your motivation for choosing nursing.

Patient Care Experience

personal statement tutor

In the nursing profession, patient care experience is not just desirable – it’s essential. Within your nursing personal statement, your ability to showcase your experience with patient care can significantly enhance your application.

Patient care experience is about more than just time spent in a healthcare setting. It’s about what you’ve learned from interacting with patients, their families, and healthcare professionals. It’s about your understanding of the patient experience and your ability to empathise and connect with people during their most vulnerable moments.

Perhaps you have volunteered at a local care home or hospital, providing support to patients and aiding their recovery. Or maybe you’ve spent time working in a hospice, delivering end-of-life care with compassion and respect. These experiences help demonstrate your ability to provide emotional support, communicate effectively, and work as part of a healthcare team.

In your medicine personal statement , be sure to discuss specific examples of patient interactions that influenced your perspective or affirmed your decision to pursue a career in nursing. Reflect on the skills you gained or honed, whether it be patience, resilience, empathy, or communication skills.

Passion for Healthcare

Additionally, conveying your passion for healthcare is crucial. The nursing profession is not just a job; it’s a vocation that demands dedication and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Your passion for healthcare could be inspired by a personal experience or a long-held aspiration to contribute positively to the health and well-being of individuals and communities. It might have been kindled by an influential role model, or perhaps it’s the intellectual challenge of healthcare that captivates you.

Regardless of its origin, you should articulate your passion in a compelling and heartfelt manner in your personal statement. Describe the experiences, encounters, or insights that have nurtured your passion for healthcare. Discuss how this passion motivates you to navigate the challenges and rewards of a nursing career.

Passion, when combined with knowledge and experience, makes for a potent mix that nursing admissions panels are looking for. Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning, keeping up-to-date with advancements in healthcare and nursing best practices. Above all, show your enthusiasm for providing compassionate care to patients and making a meaningful impact on their lives.

In both the ‘patient care experience’ and ‘passion for healthcare’ sections of your nursing personal statement, authenticity is key. Be honest, be reflective, and let your true dedication to the nursing profession shine through.

Teamwork & Leadership

personal statement tutor

In as dynamic and demanding a field as nursing, teamwork and leadership skills are of the utmost importance. These traits enable nurses to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams and play a crucial role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. When crafting your nursing personal statement, it’s essential to highlight your strengths in teamwork and leadership.

Start with your experiences in teamwork. You could talk about your role in a group project at university, your part-time job in a collaborative environment, or your experiences volunteering with a team. Discuss the specific roles you played, the challenges you faced, and how you helped your team overcome those challenges. Reflect on what you learned from those experiences and how they have honed your ability to communicate, cooperate, and coordinate effectively within a team.

Then, shift your focus to your leadership experiences. Leadership in nursing doesn’t necessarily mean being in a managerial role; it can mean taking the initiative, showing resilience in the face of adversity, and influencing positive change in your environment. Reflect on times when you have demonstrated leadership, whether it was leading a study group, spearheading a community initiative, or stepping up during a critical situation in a healthcare setting.

While discussing your leadership experiences, highlight traits such as decisiveness, integrity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. Talk about instances when you’ve had to make tough decisions, how you managed conflicts, or led by example. Remember to showcase how you’ve used these teamwork and leadership skills within a healthcare setting, if possible. For instance, working within a team during a hospital work experience, or leading a health promotion campaign in your community. These examples will demonstrate your understanding of the collaborative nature of healthcare and your potential as a future nurse leader.

Finally, explain how you aim to further develop these skills during your nursing degree and beyond. Highlight your commitment to continuous personal and professional development and your aspiration to utilise these skills to improve patient care and health outcomes.

In essence, your nursing personal statement should tell the story of who you are, your journey towards nursing, and your potential to excel in the field. By weaving in your teamwork and leadership skills within that narrative, you not only showcase your capabilities but also illustrate your understanding of the critical role these skills play in nursing practice.
