Goats are one of the most common types of farm animals. They are domesticated widely. They live in a wide range of environments and have always been the most reliable source of income for poor people. Goats are an important source of extra income and work for many farmers and landless workers in rural India. Small ruminant farming ensures that you can work for yourself and provides a buffer in times of trouble like drought and famine.

Goats are ungulates or small animals. The size of adult goats range from 65 to 105 cm (2 to 3.5 feet) at the shoulder and weigh between 18 and 150 kg depending on the species (40 to 330 lbs). Their bodies are coated in dense hair that keeps them warm in the winter.

Both male and female goats have horns, with the male having a larger horn. The horns are curved or spiral in shape and can reach a length of 165 cm (5.4 feet). Male and female goats both use their horns to fight among themselves and to ward off predators (Nowak 1983).

Goats typically dwell in groups of 5 to 100 or more animals. Adult goats may live alone at times. The groups tend to move around a lot, which aids them in finding food in their scarce habitats.

Goats, like other bovids, have a digestive mechanism that allows them to live on abrasive, low-quality plant material like leaves and grasses. Goats may consume a wide range of foods.

Goats are regarded to be smarter than most other hoofed animals, with a natural curiosity. They will occasionally climb up into trees to nibble on the leaves (Nowak 1983; Voelker 1986).

A male goat is known as a buck or billy, and a female is known as a doe or nanny. T The young ones of goats are called kids.

Depending on the species, goats give birth to one or two kids after a gestation period of 150 to 180 days. Newborn goats, like the young of most other bovids, can stand and follow their moms practically immediately after birth. Goat milk is very rich, and young goats grow quickly. Mother goats are fiercely protective of their young ones and will fight to protect them (Nowak 1983).

Goat meat is higher in nutritional content and has more health advantages than other red meats. Goat meat, which is lower in calories, total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol than traditional meats, has higher iron levels when compared to a similar serving size of beef, hog, lamb, and chicken. In comparison, goat meat has a higher potassium level and a lower salt concentration.

Goat milk is easily digestible due to the smaller size of the fat globules and serves as a simple source of family nutrition. Goat milk is advised for children, the elderly, and the sick since it is easily digestible and may have medicinal properties.

Today, goatskin is still used to produce gloves, boots, and other items that require a soft hide. Kid gloves, which were popular in Victorian times, are still manufactured today. The Black Bengal breed, which is indigenous to Bangladesh, produces high-quality skin.

Cashmere goats produce one of the best fibres in the world, “Cashmere wool.” Cashmere fibre is extremely delicate and silky, growing beneath the guard hairs. Kashmir is known for pashmina (Persian pashmina, meaning fine wool) in South Asia, and these goats are known as pashmina goats (frequently confused for sheep). Because these goats are native to upper Kashmir and Laddakh, their wool became known as cashmere in the West. Kashmiri pashmina shawls are well-known for their exquisite needlework.

Goats have distinct social, economic, and biological benefits. They can be maintained on a small scale and can withstand a wide range of agro-climatic conditions. Goat meat (chevon) is one of the most popular types of meat among customers in numerous nations, including India. In India, both demand and production of goat meat have steadily increased over the last decade, and despite the rising production trend, the country will need to treble the number of goats to meet the predicted demand for goat meat from the growing human population in the next decades.

India has the highest goat population. The demand for meat, milk and fibre is gradually increasing and is predicted to climb more in the future due to significant increases in per capita income and people’s health consciousness. Consumers throughout the world desire products that are “clean, green, and ethical.” As a result, goat farmers are transitioning to animal husbandry approaches that do not jeopardise animal welfare. The medicinal characteristics of goat milk have boosted societal interest in employing it as a therapeutic health food neutraceutical; also, biotechnologists are focused on designer milk for human health.

There are male and female goats. A buck is a male goat, and a doe is a female. Young ones are called “kids.” But did you know that when a goat gives birth, it is called “kidding”?

Goats are social animals who become sad when they are separated from their friends. However, unlike sheep, goats are not flock-oriented.

A lot of people think goats are dirty. They are one of the cleanest animals, and they pick their food a lot more carefully than other animals, such as cows, sheep and even dogs.

Goats are very smart and curious animals. Their inquisitive nature is shown by their constant desire to explore and investigate anything that is new or different.

They communicate by bleating to one another. Mothers would frequently call to their children to ensure that they remain nearby. Soon after giving birth, mother and child goats recognise one other’s sounds.

Goats may be taught to respond to their names and to come when called.

They are extremely finicky eaters. They have extremely sensitive lips, which they utilise to “mouth” things to find clean and appetising food. They frequently refuse to eat hay that has been stepped on or that has been laying around loose for a day.

The sneeze sound is used as an alert by goats. They sneeze to warn one other of impending danger, whether real or imagined.

Goats do not like water. They would rather jump over puddles and streams than step in them.

Goats, being mountain animals, are excellent climbers; they have been known to scale the tops of trees and even dams!

The kids of goats, like those of many other hooved mammals, are rectangular. This allows them to see 320 to 340 degrees (as opposed to humans’ 160-210) around them without moving, and they are known to have superb night vision.

Goats forage rather than graze. Grazing a goat on grass is essentially unnatural and increases the likelihood of them catching up  dangerous parasites. In their natural habitat, they roam mountaintops, reaching as high as they can to seek out tasty morsels of food.

There are four “stomachs” in goats. Their meal enters the rumen first (and is regularly regurgitated for more “cud-chewing”), then the reticulum, then the omasum, and finally the abomasum (which is most like a more sensitive human stomach).

The goats are burpers .This is because the rumen does this job. There are about four or five litres of plant material in a mature goat’s rumen. Cellulose is broken down there, and it also serves as a fermentation tank. There is no doubt that fermenting food makes gas. This gas comes out in the form of loud, healthy burps. Our goats often burp in the barn.

Facts About Goats

• According to archaeological evidence, goats are one of the oldest domesticated species of animal. Stone age farmers started herding wild goats to get easy access to milk and meat.
• Goats are a member of the animal family Bovidae and the tribe Caprini and are closely 
• Goats were brought to America by Columbus in 1493. 
• A goat that is well cared for can live between 15 and 18 years long.
• A large group of goats is called a herd.
• Female goats are called does or nannies, while young goats are called kids. Male goats are called bucks or billies.
• If a male goat is castrated, it is called a wether.
• The words “hircine” and “caprine” both refer to anything having a goat-like quality.
• There are over 300 different breeds of goats and well over 450 million around the world. 
• China is believed to have the most goats in the world.
• It is speculated that coffee was first discovered by goat herders when they noticed the animals having an unusual amount of energy after eating coffee beans.
• Goats readily revert to the wild (become feral) if given the opportunity. The only domestic animal known to return to feral life as swiftly is the cat.

Size, Anatomy, and Breeding

• Each breed of goat has specific weight ranges, which vary from over 140 kg (300 lb) for bucks of larger breeds such as the Boer, to 20 to 27 kg (45 to 60 lb) for smaller female goats.
• The smallest breed of goats are miniature breeds like the African Pygmy goat which is only 41 to 58 cm (16 to 23 in) tall at the shoulder.
• Most goats naturally have two horns, of various shapes and sizes depending on the breed.
• Their horns are made of living bone surrounded by keratin and are used for defense, dominance, and territoriality.
• The rumen, which is the largest compartment and is used for storage
• The reticulum, which is the smallest compartment, is known as the “honeycomb”
• The omasum whose main function is to absorb water and nutrients from the digestible feed.
• The abomasum, which is like the human stomach, is referred to as the “true stomach”.
• As with other mammal ruminants like cows , sheep , and camels , they are even-toed ungulates.
• Female goats have an udder consisting of two teats that provide milk for kids.
• Goat eyes have horizontal, slit-shaped pupils. 
• Goats have no tear ducts.
• Both male and female goats may have beards.
• Gestation is approximately 150 days.
• Single, twin and even triplet births are common.
• Birthing is known as kidding.
• Freshening (coming into milk production) occurs at kidding.

What Do Goats Eat?

• Goats are reputed to be willing to eat almost anything, including tin cans and cardboard boxes. 
• While goats will not actually eat inedible material, they will chew on and taste just about anything remotely resembling plant matter to decide whether it is good to eat, including cardboard, clothing, and paper.
• Aside from sampling many things, goats are quite particular in what they actually consume, preferring to browse on the tips of woody shrubs and trees, as well as the occasional broad-leaved plant. 
• Their plant diet is extremely varied and includes some species toxic to other animals.
• Goat-rearing is most often free-ranging since stall-fed goat-rearing involves extensive upkeep and is seldom commercially viable.
• Goats are released onto the tea terraces where they avoid consuming the green tea leaves (which contain bitter-tasting substances) but instead eat the weeds. 
• The goats’ droppings then fertilize the tea plants.

Goat Products and Uses

• Milk production varies with the breed, age, quality, and diet of the doe.  On average, a good quality dairy doe will give at least 3 kg (6 lb) of milk per day while she is in milk. 
• Goats produce about 2% of the world’s total annual milk supply.
• Goat milk has less cholesterol than cow’s milk.
• Goat milk is easily digestible and less allergenic than cow’s milk. 
• Goat milk is higher in calcium, vitamin A and niacin than cows’ milk.

Butter, Yogurt, and Cheese

• Goat butter is white because goats produce milk with the yellow beta-carotene converted to a colorless form of vitamin A. 
• Goat milk is commonly processed into yogurt, cheese, ice cream, and other products. 
• Goat meat is a great source of nutrients, including protein, iron, vitamin B12, zinc, and potassium. 
• It’s also low in total fat and saturated fat compared with other forms of red meat.
• The taste of goat kid meat is similar to that of spring lamb meat. 
• The Angora breed of goats produces long, curling, lustrous locks of mohair. The entire body of the goat is covered with mohair and there are no guard hairs. The locks constantly grow to four inches or more in length. The wool is shorn twice a year and used in the textile industry.
• Most goats have soft insulating hairs nearer the skin, which goes by the names down, cashmere, and pashmina and this is used for textile manufacture.

• The intestine of goats is still used to make “catgut” which is used as a material for internal human surgical sutures
• It is also used as strings for musical instruments.
• Historically, goat hide was used for water and wine bottles, in both traveling and transporting wine for sale.
• Also, goat bones, hair, and sinew were used for clothing, building, and tools.
• Their dung is also used as fuel.
• Goats have been used by humans to clear unwanted vegetation for centuries. They have been described as “eating machines”

• The goat is one of the 12-year cycles of animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac. Each animal is associated with certain personality traits; those born in a year of the goat are predicted to be shy, introverted, creative, and perfectionist.
• Goats are mentioned many times in the Bible. Their importance in ancient Israel is indicated by the seven different Hebrew and three Greek terms used in the Bible.

OK, I’ll just explain some words that are in today’s story.

Goats are a short, white animal that go ’Meeeh!’. Goats are very good at climbing mountains. Goats can be used to make milk, cheese and meat.

The eldest is the oldest brother or sister in a family. For example, my brother is older than me and my sister, so he is the eldest. In the past and in many cultures generally, the eldest child was often very important.

A middle child is a child who is not the youngest and not the eldest. I have an older sister and an older brother. My brother is the eldest, and my sister is the middle child – she is older than me and younger than my brother. There is a stereotype that middle children try to make peace between their older and younger brothers and sisters.

Someone who is greedy wants to have lots of food or lots of money. Children are often greedy because they want to eat lots of sweets. Maybe they steal food from other children because they are so greedy. Usually, when adults are greedy, it means that they want more and more money.

Water flows – it moves smoothly. If you have water in a sink, it doesn’t flow, because it is not moving, but when water is in a river, it flows down the river. Water in the sea doesn’t flow so much – it jumps onto the beach very dramatically. But if you pour water slowly from a glass, it will flow.

People who are silly say stupid things and like to make lots of jokes. Usually, young children are quite silly, because they like to have lots of fun and aren’t very serious. I think we should all be a bit more silly.

When someone drowns , they fall into water and die. If you can swim, then it is harder to drown, because you can swim out of the water. But maybe the water is very deep, or you are in the sea and the land is far away, or you are very hurt. In those cases, you might drown. You can also drown another person, but I don’t recommend it!

Narrow means not wide. Something can be narrow but very tall, or narrow but short. If a street is narrow, there might not be enough room for a car to drive down it.

One by one means one after the other. If you really enjoy M&Ms, you might eat them one by one, instead of eating five at once. If you are working on some very difficult mathematics, you will probably have to answer the questions one by one. When you go to the doctor’s, the doctor talks to patients, sick people, one by one.

Trolls are big, ugly monsters. Trolls often appear in stories from Northern Europe. An internet troll is someone who likes to make other people angry on the internet. Hopefully, none of you are internet trolls, because they are not nice people!

When someone is annoying , they do lots of things you don’t like. For example, if your younger sister is very loud, steals your food and wakes you up in the morning, she’s probably quite annoying. In my opinion, people who have very loud phone conversations on the train are very annoying.

OK, so listen and enjoy!

Once, there were three goats. The three goats were sisters, and each sister was bigger than the other. The youngest sister was the smallest, the middle child was normal-sized, and the eldest goat was the biggest.

One day, the three goats were happily eating grass in the field. They had eaten grass there for many years, but now there was not much grass left.

‘Oh no!’ said the youngest goat. ‘There is no grass left. What will we eat now?’

‘It’s because you ate all the grass!’ said the middle child. ‘You’re such a greedy little goat. You think because you’re the youngest that you can eat all the grass.’

‘Stop!’ said the eldest goat. ‘This has happened before, but you two are probably too young to remember. There is another field we can go to, where there will be lots more grass. Follow me.’

The eldest goat took her two sisters through the field to a big bridge. The bridge went over a river, and the water under the river flowed quickly.

‘What’s that?!’ said the youngest goat. ‘That’s not grass!’

‘Ha, silly sister!’ said the middle child. But she also didn’t know what it was.

‘It is a bridge,’ explained the eldest. ‘It will take us to the other field where all the grass is.’

‘But why can’t we just swim?’ said the youngest.

‘Don’t be silly! Can’t you see how fast that water is flowing? If we went into that water, we would drown .’

‘Very true,’ said the eldest goat, who thought the middle goat was much sillier than the youngest. ‘Now, the bridge is quite narrow , so we must walk across it one by one .’

‘I’ll go first!’ said the middle goat.

‘No, no,’ said the eldest. ‘Let the youngest go first. If the bridge is broken, then she won’t fall in. But we are bigger, and we could easily fall in the water.’

So the youngest goat was the first to cross the bridge. The bridge was not broken, and she did not fall in. She walked across the narrow bridge, and soon she could not see or hear her sisters. But before she could cross to the other side, there was a horrible noise.

‘WRAAAAGH!’

A troll jumped out in front of the goat.

‘Ah!’ cried the youngest goat. ‘You’re not grass!’

‘No, I’m a troll!’ said the troll.

‘Oh,’ said the goat. ‘I’m glad. I wouldn’t eat you if you were grass.’

‘Uh, aren’t you afraid of me?’ said the troll.

‘Not really,’ said the goat. ‘Why? Should I be afraid?’

‘Yes, yes you should!’ said the troll. ‘I’m a big, hungry troll, and do you know what trolls eat?’

‘Grass?’ said the youngest goat. ‘We eat grass, and it’s very nice, so I think –’

‘NO!’ said the troll. ‘I eat goats .’

‘Oh. But you’re not going to eat me, are you? I’m so young! I want to live a long life!’

‘Well, too bad!’ said the troll. ‘Because I’m going to eat you, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.’

‘But really…’ said the goat. ‘You said you’re big and hungry, but I’m just a little goat. If you eat me, you’ll still be hungry. My sister will be coming soon, and she’s bigger than me, so you can eat her instead.’

‘And why don’t I just eat you and your sister?’ said the troll.

‘Well, that would be greedy! But also, if you try to eat me, I’ll make lots of noise and my sisters will know not to cross the bridge!’

‘Fine, fine,’ said the troll. ‘Hopefully, your sister is less annoying …’

‘Yay! Thank you, Mr. Troll!’

The youngest sister crossed to the other side.

Next, the middle goat crossed the narrow bridge. She worried that the bridge might break, but it didn’t. When the troll jumped out, she was quite surprised.

‘Oh! I thought the bridge was breaking, but it’s just a rabbit or something.’

‘A rabbit ?’ said the troll. ‘I’m not a rabbit!’

‘Alright, alright. Maybe a cat? Look, we live in a small field. I don’t know what other animals look like!’

‘That doesn’t matter!’ said the troll. ‘Because I’m going to eat you!’

‘Oh!’ said the middle goat. ‘Please tell me you ate my younger sister? She’s so annoying.’

‘I did not!’ said the troll. ‘Because I am going to eat YOU! And I can see that you are bigger than your sister, and so I will not be hungry afterwards.’

‘Oh, you poor thing!’ said the goat. ‘You must have so little food. You think I will be enough food for you? You probably have been eating too little all your life. Listen, my older sister is coming after me, and she’s really fat. She’s the biggest goat I’ve ever seen! She would really make a better meal.’

‘And why can’t I eat you both?’ said the troll.

Right now, he was thinking that maybe he should start eating grass. Grass didn’t talk when you tried to eat it. Grass wasn’t annoying like these goats. And his stomach was so empty…

‘Well, first, that would be greedy. But also, my older sister is very fast. If you eat me, you’ll be tired, and my sister will be too fast for you. But if you wait for her, you’ll be able to catch her! Also, I ate some really bad grass earlier, so you really don’t want to eat me.’

‘Fine, fine ,’ said the troll. ‘Go on.’

‘Thanks!’ said the middle goat. She crossed over the bridge.

Finally, the eldest goat crossed the narrow bridge. The bridge made some noises, but it did not break. When the troll jumped out, the eldest goat was not surprised.

‘I remember you!’ she said. ‘It’s been years, hasn’t it?’

‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ said the troll. ‘I’ve never met you.’

‘Oh, silly me. It was your mother I killed, wasn’t it? You were just a little baby then.’

‘What are you talking about?’ said the troll.

But it was too late for him. The eldest goat jumped and hit the troll with her head. The troll fell off the bridge and into the river.

‘Ahh!’ cried the troll.

‘Bye!’ said the eldest goat. ‘Oh, and if you have any babies, I’ll kill them, too! I’ll drown them one by one!’

The waters flowed quickly, and the troll drowned. But at least his stomach wasn’t empty. It was full of water!

‘Gluggghghh…’

The eldest goat crossed the bridge and found her sisters.

‘Oh,’ said the middle goat. ‘What did you tell the troll? Did you tell him that another troll was coming?’

‘Oh, don’t worry,’ said the eldest goat. ‘I was very nice to him.’

‘Really?’ said the youngest goat. ‘Is he still on the bridge?’

‘No, no,’ said the eldest. ‘We decided that he should leave. He lives somewhere much… wetter now. Now come on, we’ve got all this grass to eat! You won’t grow up to be big and strong like me if you don’t eat your grass.’

Now there were no trolls on the bridge, so the three goats could cross it easily. When there was no more grass in the field, the three goats crossed the bridge one by one and went to the other field. And so they happily ate grass for the rest of their lives.

The Lion and the Goat Story

Introduction to the lion and the goat story.

The narrative is based on an Indian tale. In the past, amongst the other animals in the forest, there once lived a Lion and a Goat . Unfortunately, they were desperately in need of water while they were seeking refuge in the forest. After a thorough search, they were unable to locate any lakes or ponds in the forest. They could not withstand the heat and were in desperate need of water. They were worn out because of how hot it was outside.

The Lion and the Goat Reached a Pond

A Lion and the Goat were looking for water. They both arrived at a pond simultaneously to satisfy their thirst. I arrived at the pond first, so I will drink water first, the Lion told the Goat. The conversation continued as the goat said almost the same thing as the lion had said.

Flock of Vultures

To determine who will drink the water first, the Lion and the Goat start fighting. Vultures were circling above the pond in a group. They were holding out for the conflict to end so they could devour the defeated party. The vultures made a prudent decision and watched the two creatures battle quietly without interfering.

The Lion and the Goat Became Friends

The Lion and the Goat engaged in a protracted battle. All of them persisted. They eventually paused to catch their breath and saw two vultures perched on a rock. "The Lion and the Goat would fight and die," they overheard them saying to one another. Then we'll devour them. Let's stop fighting, Mighty Lion, the goat said to the lion. It is preferable to make friends and drink water than to quarrel and end up as vulture food. Lion concurred. Speaking with your adversaries might help you solve problems when they arise.

The Lion and the Goat who coexisted in a forest are the main characters of the tale. They were both looking for water one day when, after looking for a while, they came across a pond. They suddenly began to argue with one another about who got to drink the water. A bunch of vultures had gathered nearby and were observing the fight as it was taking on. They were joking that there would be enough food for everyone if the lion and the goat got into a fight and died. Soon after realising their error, the lion and goat made buddies and drank from the river.

Make the choice in your heart to love the person you currently view as your foe. Make the choice to show them kindness every day. The prospect of friendship is created by loving your adversary. Even on arid soil, love can bring life.

Max Thieriot Likes to Watch Things Grow, Including Himself

The “Fire Country” star talks about the road trips, the farm equipment and the family time that keep him grounded.

For Max Thieriot, one of the creators and the star of the CBS series “ Fire Country ,” all roads lead back to his roots.

He was raised on a vineyard off the coast of Sonoma in Northern California. And for a while, he lived nearby on 90 acres of his own with his wife and two sons.

But “Fire Country” — about prison inmates joining elite firefighters to battle the region’s blazes in exchange for shorter sentences — shoots near Vancouver, British Columbia. So Thieriot, 35, moved his family to rural Washington, where his kids could continue to run around with the chickens and the goats.

“I wanted to try and keep the same lifestyle for my wife and my boys, and not to totally upend their world,” he said.

Alas, Thieriot still has wine in his blood.

About 14 years ago, he and a couple of childhood friends started their own vineyard. The big lesson?

“It’s much faster to do, and makes a lot more sense, when you have an entire crew,” he admitted before discussing the tractors, the road trips and the grapevines that keep him grounded.

These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

I consider my closest friends my family, but certainly at the center of my universe is my wife and my boys. I can have an exhausting day and no matter what, when I come home and I get to see my wife and I get to see my kids, it makes all of the other stuff go away.

The Ruby Mountains in Nevada

Mount Jefferson is almost 12,000 feet and there’s this insane plateau on the top of it, this huge meadow mesa, and in the summertime it’s filled with bighorn sheep. There’s a lot of Native American artifacts up there. You can see these rock outcroppings where they would have their hunting camps and their tents. You can imagine what it was like 1,000 years ago to be sitting in that place.

Digging in the Dirt

Growing up on a vineyard, one of my favorite things to do was to ride on the tractor with my dad. So as soon as we bought our Sonoma place, I went out and purchased a couple of tractors. I got a Kubota Skid Steer because there was a lot of cleaning-up work to do. Then I got a vineyard tractor, a narrow New Holland. And up here I’ve got a utility tractor. The boys love being able to dig holes and have a bucket and all the fun attachments that I can put on it.

As soon as I had children, I suddenly became a terrible flyer. So when Covid happened, we started driving everywhere. We call it the Thieriot Family Adventures. Frankly, when you’ve got a 6- and an 8-year-old who can be best friends one moment and then going at it the next, when we’re contained in our car, our wild, crazy family stuff is just our stuff. We don’t have to share it with everybody in the airport.

My family’s been in San Francisco for something like six generations now. I have a Joe Montana jersey, signed, that my dad got me when I was a kid. My boys have grown to love the sport as well. They both play flag football. I’m not quite ready for them to start tackling.

Storytelling

I never felt that confident in my writing because English was not my strongest class. I didn’t have the same vocabulary as a lot of writers. But I eventually realized that I didn’t need to as long as I could make someone feel something.

Working Out

I was always a skinny kid, and I wanted to gain muscle. As soon as I became dedicated enough to it, and just through perseverance, I started to see this change. I realized, OK, if you really commit yourself to something, you can achieve pretty amazing things.

Farm to Table

We had a guy named Ulises Valdez who was one of our vineyard managers, and he said to me, “Max, when you work hard, the food tastes a lot better.” And that stuck with me. I feel like when I’m raising a beef cow, I’m watching the animal grow. I know what I’m feeding it. I have an appreciation for its life, where this meat has come from.

I think about music as I’m directing. What’s the tempo of the scene? And if I can imagine a song right now, what is the song that’s playing here and how is it motivating whatever the audience is supposed to be feeling at this point?

Lifelong Friends

I grew up in a small town where a lot of my friends I’ve known since childhood. I think it has kept me grounded in a way. It’s brought me back to my roots, brought me back to the people that know me for me and who I really am at my core and not the actor that they see on TV.
