11th grade teaching tips
Eleventh-grade readers should be capable of understanding varying kinds of technical texts, including those used in other disciplines like science. To aid students in this endeavor, reading standards stipulate that learners should understand how to paraphrase technical readings in simple language, but using accurate terms at the same time. Furthermore, students should have the capacity for gleaning information from different types of mediums (i.e., lab reports, first-hand accounts, secondary sources) to answer a question or solve a problem. Use the following exercises with the worksheets below to help students work on these skills.
Teach Notetaking
Taking proper notes when reading is essential for the comprehension of the material. It’s also a necessary component of learning how to paraphrase the author’s words. Model for students common methods of notetaking, including the use of numbered and lettered entries to organize the material. Emphasize being accurate but succinct when outlining key details.
Use a Synthesis Matrix
A synthesis matrix is a visual organizer that helps students track key ideas, details, and themes from multiple sources. It enables readers to see connections between sources, similarities, and differences, which can then be used to summarize the readings and lead to new ideas and analysis of the texts. A simple matrix with the source name on the Y-axis and the key details on the X-axis is all that’s needed to organize information from multiple sources.
Use Questions to Zero in on Details
Before reading, have students review the section questions at the end of the passage. Then, as they read the section, have students take notes that will help answer the questions they’ve read. Numbering their notes to correspond to the questions they answer will help readers organize the information for later analysis.
