Mechanical engineering articles from across Nature Portfolio
Mechanical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with moving machines and their components. A central principle of mechanical engineering is the control of energy: transferring it from one form to another to suit a specific demand. Car engines, for example, convert chemical energy into kinetic energy.

Micro- and nanorobots for biofilm eradication
Micro- and nanorobots present a promising approach for navigating within the body and eliminating biofilm infections. Their motion can be remotely controlled by external fields and tracked by clinical imaging. They can mechanically disrupt the biofilm matrix and kill the dormant bacterial cells synergistically, thereby improving the effectiveness of biofilm eradication.

Mechanism of plastic deformation in metal monochalcogenides
Metal monochalcogenides — a class of van der Waals layered semiconductors — can exhibit ultrahigh plasticity. Investigation of the deformation mechanism reveals that on mechanical loading, these materials undergo local phase transitions that, coupled with the concurrent generation of a microcrack network, give rise to the ultrahigh plasticity.
Adaptable navigation of magnetic microrobots
An article in Nature Machine Intelligence presents an adaptable method to control magnetic microrobots’ navigation using reinforcement learning.

Soft sensing and haptics for medical procedures
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) lacks sufficient haptic feedback to the surgeon due to the length and flexibility of surgical tools. This haptic disconnect is exacerbated in robotic-MIS, which utilizes tele-operation to control surgical tools. Tactile sensation in MIS and robotic-MIS can be restored in a safe and conformable manner through soft sensors and soft haptic feedback devices.

Propelling the widespread adoption of large-scale 3D printing
3D printing can be used to automate the manufacturing of building elements for large-scale structures such as skyscrapers, aircraft, rockets and space bases without human intervention. However, challenges in materials, processes, printers and software control must first be overcome for large-scale 3D printing to be adopted for widespread applications.

Exploration of truss metamaterials with graph based generative modeling
Optimisation tasks in the inverse design of metamaterials with machine learning were limited due to the representations of generative models. Here the author comments a recent publication in Nature Communications which generates a latent space representation that unlocks non-linear optimisations.

How to publish in this journal
The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.
The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.
Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.
This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.
Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.
Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.
International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.
Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.
Ratio of a journal's items, grouped in three years windows, that have been cited at least once vs. those not cited during the following year.

Geometrical Dimensional Effect on Natural Frequency of Single Layer Graphene in Armchair Configuration
Abstract: Graphene has remarkable strength, such as yield strength and elastic constant. The dynamic behaviour of graphene sheet is affected by geometrical variation in atomic arrangement. This paper introduced graphene with armchair atomic structure for estimating fundamental natural frequencies. The presented analysis can be useful for the possible high frequency nanomechanical resonator systems. The analytical formulation, based on classical plate theory and... More
About the Journal
Mechanical Engineering, as one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines, relies on fundamental science disciplines such as physics, mathematics, material science, but also on modern disciplines such as computation science, in order to design, analyze, optimize, manufacture and maintain a vast range of mechanical systems. Dissemination of the results achieved in this enticing field of engineering development is almost of equal importance as the development itself.
Reports in Mechanical Engineering (RME) aims at this important task by providing a venue for high-quality scientific papers that contribute significantly to the field of Mechanical Engineering. The material published is of high quality and relevance, written in a manner that makes it accessible to a wide-ranging readership. Papers reporting original theoretical and/or practice-oriented research or extended versions of the already published conference papers are all welcome. The scope of the journal covers the whole spectrum of Mechanical Engineering. Papers for publication are selected through a double-blind peer-review process to ensure originality, relevance, and readability. In doing that, the objective is not only to keep the quality of published papers high but also to provide a timely, thorough, and balanced review process.
General Journal guidelines for authors
Reports in Mechanical Engineering publishes research articles, reviews, short communications, and case studies. Research articles must include: motivation for the work, an adequate overview of the representative work in the field including up-to-date references, a clear statement of the novelty in the presented research, suitable theoretical background, one or more examples to demonstrate and discuss the presented ideas and, finally, conclusions. Short communications are usually 4-7 pages long, research articles and case studies 8-12 pages, while reviews can be longer. Page number limits are not strict and, with appropriate reasoning, the submitted articles can also be longer or shorter. Authors are requested to follow the RME guidelines and strictly format their manuscripts as per article template that is available here.
If extensions of previously published conference papers are submitted, Editors will check if sufficient new material has been added to fulfill the journal standards and qualify the submission for the review process. The added material must have not been previously published. New results are desired but not necessarily required; however, the submission should contain expansions of key ideas, examples, elaborations, etc. of the conference submission.
RME's acceptance rate is less than 30% of more than 70 manuscripts it receives annually. In 2021, the median time for an initial editorial decision for submitted manuscripts was 12 days; the median time from submission to acceptance for the accepted articles was 35 days, and 7 days from acceptance to online publication.
Aims and Scope : The principal aim of the journal is to bring together the latest research and development in various fields of Mechanical Engineering. We would like to highlight that papers should refer to Aims and scope , but they are not limited to.
Publication Frequency: One issue per year is published online, but processed and accepted papers, with full bibliographic data, are added to the issue continuously over the whole year.
Open Access : This is an open-access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles in this journal without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.
