Tips on How to Write Your ISB PGP Essays for 2021 – 2022 Intake (Released in July 2021) [Specific Frameworks and Tactics Inside]

2021 proved to be a great year for ISB. And here are the new ISB essay tips for you.

While other business schools struggled to place their MBA students, the Indian School of Business (ISB) experienced an increase of 8.32% in the average accepted CTC, at an all-time high of INR 28.29 lakhs.

The top hiring industries were Consulting, IT/ITES/Technology, BFSI, FMCG/Retail, and Pharma/Healthcare.

ISB’s robust placement stats continue to reinforce its position as the preferred choice for consulting firms.

With a unique faculty portfolio model, ISB is the only business school in India that brings the best of global faculty and curriculum to its students.

Who’s ISB looking for?

ISB seeks those with strong leadership potential and values.

Given its rigorous academic program, ISB places a lot of emphasis on academic performance and GMAT scores.

However, you can compensate for a poor academic record with a high GMAT score. This can considerably improve your application’s chances of being favorably assessed by ISB.

ISB PGP essays for 2021 – 2022 (Class of 2023)

ISB has retained the same essay prompts as last year. The short word limits for all the essays require you to strike a fine balance between conciseness and clarity.

ISB Essay 1 – Describe with examples the most important personal quality that you possess that significantly enhances your prospects of being successful as a leader. (400 words max)

ISB Essay 2 – What are your short-term and long-term career goals? How will Post Graduate Program at ISB assist you in achieving your goals? (400 words max)

ISB Reapplicant Essay – Please use this space to explain significant improvements in your profile since your last application to the ISB PGP (200 words max)

Tips for Writing ISB PGP Essay 1

First, let’s decode the part “the most important personal quality that will make you a successful leader”.

Simply stating that your leadership is your most important personal quality won’t be an effective response.

Instead, you need to specify your most important leadership attribute .

For instance, some of the prominent leadership attributes or skills are –

  • Strategic and Critical Thinking
  • Taking Initiative
  • Risk Taking
  • Communication
  • Authenticity
  • Planning and Delivery
  • Persuasion and Influence
  • Change Management and Innovation

Given this context, there are two ways you can approach this essay – choose the one that works best for you.

Approach 1 –

Start by listing out all your major accomplishments — this could be from your personal, professional, and/or academic life — where you demonstrated leadership.

Then identify the leadership attributes that appear prominently in each of your shortlisted achievements. There’ll be 1 or 2 attributes that will be more pronounced than the others. By this point, it’ll be easy for you to zero in on that ONE leadership attribute that’s clearly persistent in all your significant achievements.

Achievements —> One Leadership Attribute Common to All Those Achievements

Approach 2 –

You can first start by identifying an attribute that resonates with you the most and then choose the achievements where you demonstrated the particular leadership attribute.

One Leadership Attribute –> All the Achievements Where This Attribute Is Distinctly Visible

Once you’ve identified the leadership trait you want to elaborate in your essay, the next crucial step is to choose the number of achievements you want to showcase.

  • Elaborate on each achievement by explaining the context, highlighting the challenges, outlining the actions you took, and emphasizing the results you’d achieved.
  • If you are keen to include more than 2 achievements, then summarize the achievements at a high level without delving deep into the specifics of each case.

Finally, conclude this essay with

  • Your key takeaways from your experiences; how you have been transformed as a result.
  • And how you plan to further reinforce your particular leadership attribute at ISB.

Tips for Writing ISB PGP Essay 2

ISB Essay 2 – What are your short-term and long-term career goals? How will Post Graduate Program at ISB assist you in achieving your goals? (400 words max)

You can start by indicating the strengths and skills you’ve gained in your career so far. You can even include your motivation behind taking up specific roles.

Next, talk about the opportunities that you want to pursue.

Then specify your post-MBA goals – this will help you establish a logical connection between your current profile and your future role.

Here’s a quick framework to help you think more clearly about approaching your post-MBA goals essay, easily the toughest essay to write.

Framework about ISB Essay Tips

Here you can take two approaches –

  • Specify your short-term goals and then outline your long-term goals. Or,
  • Talk about your long-term goals first and then mention your short-term goals.

Make sure you highlight the weaknesses or limitations that you need to overcome in order to transition to your post-MBA goals, connecting those with the resources (such as courses, clubs, faculty, alumni network, and so on) at ISB.

This way you are clearly articulating to ISB why you want to do an MBA and why ISB and its resources are crucial to help you achieve your goals.

Specificity Rules

It’s important to be as specific about your post-MBA goals, especially your short-term goal.

Consider the following examples of post-MBA goals that can be construed as vague –

“I want to be part of corporate strategy.”

“I want to join management consulting.”

Now most MBA applicants want to get into consulting or strategy roles because that’s what business schools are well-known for.

However, when you state your goals without elaborating on why you chose those as your post MBA goals, the Admissions Committee is unable to clearly understand why  you  want to be in corporate strategy or management consulting.

An example of an effective goals statement would look something like this (assuming you have a background in healthcare or a related industry)

I aim to join as a strategy consultant with a leading management consulting firm like McKinsey or BCG, focusing on the healthcare sector, and help them set up operations in North India.

See how the statement clearly calls out your target role, industry, and company before outlining how you intend to leverage your experience in your post-MBA role.

Tips for Writing ISB’s PGP Reapplicant Essay

ISB Reapplicant Essay – Please use this space to explain significant improvements in your profile since your last application to the ISB PGP (200 words max)

This is the place where you talk about the steps you have taken to improve your profile such as getting a higher score in your GMAT or GRE, taking up bigger responsibilities at work, contributing to a social cause, working on a side project, and more. Again, it’s important to talk about the impact that you’ve created and how you have evolved, personally, professionally, or both, since you last applied to ISB.

ISB PGP Application Deadlines

*Round 2 timelines are yet to be released.

Round 1 or Round 2

ISB explicitly mentions that “applying in any round does not impact your chances of securing an admission offer”.

However, applying to round 1 has advantages for those seeking scholarships – this is clarified by ISB as well on its website –

1) Full tuition fee waivers will be offered only to Round 1 applicants.

2) Up to 75% tuition fee waivers will be offered to Round 2 applicants.

This is what our client Mayank Arora (ISB Class of 2021) shares about his experience working with MBAEssayNation

isb essays 2022

Last year, I was rejected at my preferred business school. I wasn’t sure what went wrong because I thought my interview had gone well. I was utterly confused and wasn’t sure how to proceed. That’s when I came to know about MBAEssayNation from a colleague. On my very first interaction with Deepthi Ma’am, I felt extremely comfortable and knew that she was the right person to coach me with my applications. It was all thanks to Ma’am who whipped my essays and resume into such a fine form and then did numerous (not 1 or 2 but at least 10!) mock interviews to make sure I was really prepared for my final interview. In fact, when I went for my interview, the interview panel even complimented me on how well-written my essays were . I even got a scholarship at ISB. I highly recommend MBAEssayNation if you want the absolute best help with your applications. Mayank Arora

Another client Dimple Jain (ISB Class of 2020) says this about her experience –

isb essays 2022

Before meeting Deepthi, I was struggling with my essays. I had taken help from another admissions consulting company and I had struggled with lot of delays due to their consultants who were very unprofessional. A friend strongly recommended MBAEssayNation to me. And deciding to work with Deepthi and MBAEssayNation was one of the best decisions I took. Her personalized attention and astute feedback helped me refocus on my application with greater confidence. I worked with Deepthi on my ISB business school application and though I reached out to her with just a week before the submission deadlines, she was extremely patient in coaching me with my essays and was always available for a quick call. In fact without her help, I couldn’t have come up with strong post MBA goals. She has a strong industry background which she used to help me to gain more clarity about how my post MBA goals should be structured. All my essays looked brilliant thanks to her and MBAEssayNation . MBAEssayNation is the ONLY reason why I got admits from ISB, Michigan Ross and INSEAD. Highly recommended! Dimple Jain

ISB essays 2022 – 23 analysis, tips, and suggestions

isb ylp

ISB Essay 1: Peer Learning is a major building block of PGP at ISB. Help us in understanding how will you be able to add value to the PGP peer group through your personal and professional qualities/capabilities? (400 words)

The ISB essays 2022 have one surprise – a change in the first essay of the essay set. This essay had been used for the last two years, and so a change was due. The essay is on your personal and professional qualities and capabilities. The answer should be grounded in a concrete example of how you have added value to a peer group or team in the past, and how you can do it now.

Think about a time when you went above and beyond for a peer group or team. What did you do and what was the result? How did your actions benefit the group or team? What specific qualities or capabilities did you draw on in order to be successful? For example, maybe you stepped in to lead a project when the assigned leader was struggling. Or maybe you took on extra work in order to lighten the load for a team member who was going through a tough time.

Whatever the example, be sure to describe the situation in detail and explain how your personal and professional qualities helped you to add value to the group or team. What qualities or capabilities would you like to highlight? How did they benefit the group or team? What was the result of your actions?

The first sentence must be an engaging introduction that draws the reader in and gives them a sense of what the essay will cover.

Think about what you can contribute to your peers in terms of knowledge, experience, skills and/or insights that they do not have. You want them to learn something new from you during peer sessions, so think about what exactly that can be. Think about what you have done differently from others or what skills you possess that others may not have (e.g., leadership qualities). Your essay should reflect your personality and values. It should be based on experiences or ideas that are meaningful to you personally or professionally. You also need to tell us what sets you apart from other candidates and why we should choose you over others. The goal of this question is not just to see how well someone can write but also how they think!

When answering this question, you want to make sure that you are differentiating yourself from other applicants. What unique qualities or experiences do you have that would make you a valuable asset to the program? This is your opportunity to sell yourself to the admissions committee, so make sure to put your best foot forward!

Next, explain your ability to add value to your peer group by relating it to an experience you have had. For example, let’s say that you were on a team that was working on a project together. You could write: I was able to contribute my expertise in marketing strategy development to help my colleagues create a better product by creating a marketing plan for them based on their needs and goals. My ability to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to problems was a valuable asset to the team and helped us to achieve our goals.

Don’t try too hard to create a story out of nothing because it will come out as forced and unnatural. Just give examples from your life that can explain what kind of person you are and why you think ISB will benefit from having you as part of their program.

For example, you could talk about a time when you had to take on a leadership role in a project or situation. Describe what the situation was, what your goals were, and how you went about achieving them. Talk about the obstacles you faced and how you overcame them. Discuss what you learned from the experience and how it has helped you in your personal and professional development.

Your ISB application essay should be a reflection of your personality and values. Be honest and authentic in your writing, and let your unique voice shine through. ISB is looking for students who will add value to the school community and who will be leaders in their chosen fields. Show them that you are that person by sharing your stories and experiences in a way that is genuine, thoughtful, and insightful.

In the last paragraph, summarize why this experience makes you uniquely qualified for PGP at ISB.

ISB Essay 2:   What are your short term and long-term career goals? How will Post Graduate Program at ISB assist you in achieving your goals? (400 words max)

If you are a first-time candidate for the ISB PGP in 2022, it is essential to know that you can answer this question in two ways:

You can talk about your current career goals and how the PGP will help you achieve those goals. This makes sense if you have already made a significant decision about what you want to do with your life. You can be specific about your goals and why you have chosen them. You can also describe the steps you have already taken to achieve these goals. The ISB essays have usually included this goals essay for years now, and the ISB essays 2022 are no different.

You can describe your ideal career as it exists in your head, but not necessarily in reality. For example, if you want to be an entrepreneur or CEO of a company eventually, but don’t have any experience yet. It makes sense to talk about that ideal future job and how the program will help get there. You can describe your motivation for wanting this career, your qualifications, and your plans for making it a reality.

This essay needs to demonstrate that the applicant has a clear and concise idea of their long-term goals and how they plan to achieve them. It is not enough to simply state that the applicant wishes to be a leader in their field. The applicant must provide a detailed explanation of how they plan to get there, what kind of education and experience will help them achieve their goals, and how the ISB PGP fits into those plans.

The essay should provide a clear and concise explanation of the applicant’s goals, and how the ISB PGP will help them to achieve those goals. The applicant should detail their plans for their education and career, and explain how the ISB PGP will fit into those plans. The essay should be clear, concise, and well-organized, with a strong focus on the applicant’s goals and how the ISB PGP will help them to achieve those goals.

The question asks you to describe your long-term and short-term goals and how the PGP will help you achieve them.

You may have heard other students talk about their goal of starting their own company or becoming a consultant after graduation. But those are not necessarily realistic goals for everyone. The first thing to do is decide your long-term and short-term goals.

Start by thinking about what kind of work you want to do after business school. Do you want to work in a large corporation where you will have the opportunity to work on high-profile projects with experienced mentors? Or do you want to be an entrepreneur and be your own boss?

If you want to go into consulting or investment banking, the PGP will help you because it exposes you to many different industries and companies. You will learn about the different aspects of businesses and how they operate. If you’re going to start your own company, the PGP will help with all your entrepreneurial queries and give answers. The PGP will provide you with the resources and knowledge you need to be successful in your business venture.

You can also think about what type of companies interest you most. Do you want to work for a large multinational corporation or a smaller local business? If your interests are more towards multinationals, then again, the PGP will help because it will give you exposure to those kinds of companies through classes and elective courses. You’ll learn about the different business models and strategies that these companies use, and you’ll get a chance to see if that’s the kind of environment you want to work in.

You can further discuss how the PGP will help develop the interpersonal skills required by many companies when they hire new employees. This can be accomplished by discussing how the PGP will help build teamwork skills and leadership capabilities through group projects and networking events organised by ISB faculty members. These events will provide opportunities for students to work together in a team environment and to learn how to lead and motivate others. Finally, another way to approach this question is to discuss how the PGP will help develop soft skills such as communication skills through presentations made during classes and other activities organised by ISB faculty members. These activities will help students learn how to communicate effectively with others, how to present their ideas clearly, and how to listen to and understand the ideas of others.

ISB essay for 2024-2025 intake: How to write, Analysis, tips, and a winning framework

Admit expert.

  • ISB Admissions , MBA Essay Tips
  • August 4, 2023

The Indian School of Business (ISB) is one of the premier business schools in India, attracting top talent from around the world. The ISB admission process is highly competitive, and essays play a crucial role in the evaluation of applicants.

In this article, we will provide an in-depth analysis of the ISB essay questions for 2024 admissions, along with tips and strategies to help you craft a winning submission. With insights from ISB alumni and admissions experts, we will guide you through the essay-writing process and help you stand out from the crowd.

Whether you are a reapplicant or just starting your ISB PGP journey, this article will provide valuable insights to help you successfully navigate the ISB application process and help craft an impeccable ISB essay.

ISB essay tips and analysis

What does ISB typically ask in its essays?

Isb pgp questions for the 2024-2025 admissions, isb pgp essay 1 framework, isb pgp essay 1 analysis, isb pgp essay 2 framework, essay 2 analysis, essay 3 (optional), reapplicant essay.

Based on our analysis of previous years’ ISB Essay questions, we know that ISB typically asks four types of questions:

  • Why should ISB choose you?
  • What are the leadership qualities you possess which will help you become a future leader?
  • What are your career plans after ISB?
  • Why ISB? (based on your career goals)

For 2024 admissions, ISB has changed the essay topics. There are 3 essays and 2 of them are compulsory. You must answer those two essay prompts for the ISB PGP admissions for the 2024 intake (PGP). Both essays have a word restriction of 400 words. You must submit an additional reapplicant essay if you did not receive an admit in the ISB PGP 2023 intake or any previous admission cycle.

Essay 1: Provide an honest portrayal of yourself, emphasizing your strengths and weaknesses. Highlight the key elements that have shaped your personal journey. Give relevant illustrations as needed. (400 words)

Essay 2: Contemplate two distinct situations—one where you experienced success and another where you faced failure. Delve into the personal and interpersonal lessons you learned from these instances. (400 words)

Essay 3 (optional) Given your previous experience and future aspirations, how do you plan to use the PGP at ISB to fulfill your professional goals? Note: It is not necessary for you to write this essay. Please use this space only if there is something really significant that you would like us to know. (250 words)

Follow this 5-step framework to write a winning ISB PGP Essay 1:

  • Identify and list down what you think are your core strengths and unique qualities.
  • Identify and list down what you think are your major weaknesses or areas of improvement. This could come from feedback your received at work.
  • Identify and list down what you think have been significant influences/milestones in your life. This can be from personal, professional, extracurricular or social space.
  • Now go through the lists and pick those qualities or instances that stand out and you have an anecdote to share as a proof for those qualities.
  • Determine how you will use these strengths to enhance the ISB experience for everyone and how you will continue to work on your weaknesses at ISB.

The purpose of this essay is to get an idea of who you are as an individual. The admission committee wants to go beyond your academics and work experience and dive deeper into the person behind the application. They want to understand what has made you who you are today and contributed to your strongest values.

It is important to approach the essay prompt honestly and with self-awareness. This essay is a great opportunity to showcase your strengths and weaknesses and talk about key milestones/turning points in your life.

Here are 3 tips to write this essay effectively:

Reflect on your strengths

Identify and list down what you think are your core strengths and unique qualities that might set you apart from other applicants. Examples of such strengths could be perseverance, determination, leadership ability, analytical skills, team skills etc.

When listing down these skills, remember to try and align these for an MBA program. Ask yourself whether the quality you have will be of use in an MBA classroom.

To shortlist the best qualities from this list, pick those for which you have specific stories and examples to highlight the particular quality. Given that ISB has had an essay dedicated to leadership in the past, leadership is definitely a top quality that the admissions committee is looking for.

Some qualities that ISB looks for are: Clarity of thought, Leadership, Effective communication, Team orientation, Learning orientation, Industry knowledge, Problem-solving skills and Interpersonal skills.

Acknowledge your weaknesses

It is necessary to acknowledge your weaknesses honestly. That is why this essay prompt is there in the first place. Talking honestly about your weaknesses shows self-awareness and a willingness to grow.

You need to understand that it is okay to show that you have vulnerabilities and are not a perfect person. Again, try to choose weaknesses that are relevant to your MBA and explain how you are actively working to overcome them.

More importantly, the weaknesses you pick need to be logical. They must be something you can realistically overcome in the timeframe you mention. They must also preferably be related to your professional or academic experience.

For example, if you struggled with public speaking, you can mention how you have joined a Toastmasters club to improve your communication skills or how you take the effort to connect with diverse people to improve your communication skills.

As much as possible, in the weaknesses part of the essay, try to steer away from discussing a personality trait that ISB or MBA programs in general value. This could end up showing you in a negative light.

Share key elements that shaped your journey

For this, brainstorm the experiences, challenges or people that have significantly influenced your life in some way. These experiences can come from personal, professional or extracurricular life.

You need to dive deep into what impact the experience/person has had on you and how it has changed you. Emphasize how you have changed part.

Examples to address this part of the essay are business family background, economically backward background, working with an NGO, leadership experience in a non-professional setting, a startup venture, mentorship received from someone etc.

Lastly, once you’ve identified what to write to address the different parts of the essay prompt, it is important to tie everything together in a nice structure that is interesting to read for the admission committee.

They read hundreds of essays and therefore, you want to ensure that your essay has a high remembrance factor. Start with an engaging opening and try to identify a common thread to connect the strengths, weaknesses and learnings.

Make sure that your essay does not read as separate paragraphs. Use transitions between paragraphs to maintain a smooth flow. Finally, conclude by summarizing your main points and reiterating your commitment to growth at ISB.

ISB PGP Essay 2 analysis

Contemplate two distinct situations—one where you experienced success and another where you faced failure. Delve into the personal and interpersonal lessons you learned from these instances. (400 words)

Follow this 5-step framework to write a winning ISB PGP Essay 2:

  • Identify and list down life experiences, both professional and personal, and identify situations that align with success and failure
  • Now go through the lists and pick those instances that stand out and those that have a strong back story/example to cite
  • Review your reflections and observations from both success and failure situations. Organize them into logical sections, such as an introduction, success section, failure section and conclusion
  • Create the essay outline and organize the points to keep the narrative engaging
  • Determine how you will use your success to enhance the ISB experience for everyone and how you will continue to overcome setbacks and failures, if any, at ISB and beyond

The primary reason ISB has come up with such essay prompts this year according to us is the increasing similarity among applications and the resulting monotony in reading the essays. The admissions committee is attempting to make the essays more interesting and engaging through these prompts. This essay again is a great way to showcase your unique qualities and experiences and as a result, how you stand apart from other applicants.

You can approach this essay prompt by highlighting two significant experiences one where you achieved success and another where you faced failure.

You can choose a mix from your personal and professional life. Remember that ISB is still looking for the same qualities through this essay – Clarity of thought, Leadership, Effective communication, Team orientation, Learning orientation, Industry knowledge, Problem-solving skills and Interpersonal skills.

Here’s a potential structure for your essay:

Define Success and Failure

You can start with how you view success and failure or an interesting introductory statement that gives insight into what to expect in the essay.

Present situation or situations where you achieved success

Next, describe a situation in which you achieved success. This could be a professional accomplishment, an academic achievement or a personal milestone. Put this in STAR format, explaining the situation and context, the tasks you undertook, the challenges you faced, how you overcame them, what were the outcomes (quantify wherever possible) and most importantly, what did you take away from the situation.

Personal Lessons Learned

Reflect on the personal lessons you gained from this success in terms of skills, attributes or qualities that contributed to your achievement.

For example, you might have learned the importance of perseverance, adaptability or effective communication through a particular situation. Go on to explain how you improved and how you will continue to use your lessons going forward.

Interpersonal Lessons Learned

Reflect on the interpersonal lessons you gained from this success in terms of relationships, teamwork or leadership experiences that contributed to your achievement.

For example, you might have learned the importance of collaboration, trust-building, empathy or conflict resolution through a particular situation. Go on to explain how you improved and how you will continue to use your lessons at ISB and beyond to cultivate strong and meaningful relationships and maintain a positive environment.

Present situation or situations where you faced failure

Next, describe a situation in which you faced failure. Examples of this could be a project that did not meet expectations, a personal setback or an academic failure if it had a significant impact on you. Explain what led to the failure while acknowledging your role in the failure. Do not put the blame on others. Remember that the focus is on how you handle failure and emerge stronger. So emphasize that.

Reflect on the personal lessons you gained from this failure in terms of what went wrong, if in a similar situation now, what would you have done, the skills you lacked at that point etc. Now go on to show a growth mindset by stating what you learned from the failure and how you have been applying it in your life since.

Reflect on the personal lessons you gained from this failure in terms of conflicts, collaboration issues or team issues that you could have potentially avoided. Again, show a growth mindset by stating what you learned from the failure and how you have been developing your interpersonal skills since and how you believe that can add value at ISB.

For both personal and interpersonal learning, you can choose to give an example of recent situations in which you have applied your learning and emerged successful. Finally, summarize everything with a conclusion. Personalize the essay through your stories and examples and help the adcom remember you vividly through these.

Given your previous experience and future aspirations, how do you plan to use the PGP at ISB to fulfill your professional goals? Note: It is not necessary for you to write this essay. Please use this space only if there is something really significant that you would like us to know. (250 words max)

This is the first time that ISB has made the goals essay optional. Most likely because this is something that’s discussed in detail during the interviews anyway. However, you need to treat this as a mandatory essay and give it equal importance as the other 2 essays.

This essay is your opportunity to show how important ISB is to you and where ISB fits into your overall plan. Showcase your genuine enthusiasm for and alignment with the ISB PGP program in this essay. To craft a compelling narrative, we suggest following this framework:

Reflect on your previous experience: The skills, knowledge and accomplishments you have so far through your work experience

Define your future aspirations: What specific role or industry do you wish to work in? What impact do you want to make in the future? Be very specific about your short term goals at the very least

Identify gaps: Based on the above 2 points, identify your weak areas or areas you need to work on to reach your goals

Research the ISB PGP program: Curriculum, faculty, clubs, extracurricular activities, industry connections, network, experiential learning etc. Identify the key features and strengths of the program that align with your goals

Link program features to your goals: For example, if you wish to work in consulting, highlight how the program’s case study methodology, consulting clubs and access to industry experts will enhance your consulting skills and network

Highlight the fit: Emphasize why it is the ideal program to help you achieve your goals

To make the most of this limited space, it is imperative that you convey your sincere interest in joining ISB. Avoid formulating goals solely based on their popularity or appeal. Instead, focus on showcasing your authenticity. Discuss goals and career paths that genuinely resonate with you, allowing you to substantiate it during the interview.

You do not need to write the reapplicant essay if you applied through the Young Leaders Programme (YLP).

Candidates who applied to ISB in past years must produce an essay describing how their profile has improved during this time.

If you applied in R1 last year and are applying in R1 this year, you have almost a year to plan anew. Recapitulate all of your efforts to improve your profile.

If you applied in R2 last year and are now applying in R1, you have only had about 8 months, which may or may not reflect significant changes in your profile.

This is your best chance to show the school that you did some introspection to get a new viewpoint and that you improved your eligibility by upskilling or working on new projects.

Discuss new projects, new learnings from these projects, things you got to do for the first time, and interactions that impacted you and your career plans. Don’t forget to include experiences that helped you improve your core and soft skills.

If you presented a career goal last year that you were unable to justify in the interview, or if you have decided to pursue an alternative plan that you can validate, do not be afraid to make a statement.

Through this essay, you get a chance to prove to the ISB admissions committee that you were able to understand what went wrong the last time and that you made significant improvements in your profile based on those gaps in your profile.

ISB YLP Stage-1 Essay Question

Isb ylp stage-1 essay analysis & tips, isb ylp stage-1 sample essay structure, isb ylp stage-2 essay question, isb ylp stage-2 essay analysis & tips.

The Stage-1 Application Essay remains critical to one’s application, given that the essay is the only key component that the applicant is able to present to the admissions team, to communicate their best stories.

The following is the Stage-1 Essay Question for YLP 2024:

The question seems to have multiple parts and essentially, we need to focus on addressing these four components of the question through the essay:

  • What is the one thing that you are passionate about?
  • Current Efforts or activities that prove that interest/passion
  • Future vision/plan in the context of your passion
  • Efforts in the future that may be aligned with your plans

The YLP Stage-1 essay question can often be confusing, since, outside the academics, the things we are passionate about as college students, are often not what we want to pursue as a career. Especially when the question allows you to wander in the area of “extra-curriculars”, it may be very misleading to start talking about how you love organizing college the college fest, but don’t intend to be an event planner. One may be passionate about music, or sports, or other activities, but one may not always have a goal around that passion. The question, therefore, needs to be viewed from the lens of an MBA application, and a correlation needs to be developed between what you are passionate about and what your professional goals might be.

How do you go about it?

Think about something you really enjoy doing. It can be things like football or sudoku or travelling, etc. The problem is that in an MBA Application context, it is difficult to connect the dots forward, by talking about football, sudoku, or traveling. It will therefore be essential to connect the dots looking backward, and first identify what drives your interests and energy. Recall times when you did something that really got you hooked and that also has a larger applicability to it.

E.g., Organizing College fest – and how planning, people management, etc. interested you and going forward you would like to work on complex projects that test your people and project management skills.

Or, working with data, the knack for which you may have developed in college or internship, etc., and how you are passionate about the power of data to solve complex business problems.

Or, some paper you read on Machine Learning and how you have been intrigued by the idea since then. Talk about the internship that you recently took up in the area and what you want to achieve in the near future.

Or, some community work that you took up and that spurred your interest in large-scale social impact.

Or, some committee in college that you have been a part of and how that influenced you and your future plans (along with the passion with which you have been serving in the community).

These are just a few ideas to largely communicate that one would rather pick things that may further be relatable with one’s future plans if required – especially while building the YLP Stage 2 essay.

Then talk about your efforts during college, outside of college, virtually, etc. that have been aligned with your passion/interest. This will go on to validate your interest or passion and prove that you are committed to where your heart lies, thus implying that you will do what it takes to achieve your goals.

Conclude with how you will look to grow in this field, with specific efforts that you plan to put in and in what direction these efforts will help you grow.

The 300 word limit makes it all the more challenging to answer all the questions, but if you prepare well to include all these details, you will be able to differentiate your essay from the larger pool of applicants really well.

  • Intro – Start with establishing your passion or area of interest (50-60 words)
  • Provide some more details about your passion and any activities or initiatives that may further prove your passion in that area. (80-100 words)
  • Build on the current passion to present a logically feasible future plan, preferably in the professional context. It’s ok to present a direction instead of a concrete destination, since all applicants are college students and are yet to explore everything so concretely. (70-80 words)
  • Talk about how you foresee achieving your plan, any interim steps that you want to take, any milestones that you may have marked for yourself – essentially, any kind of effort that you expect to put in before, during, and after the YLP to help achieve your goals. (80-100 words)

Business schools are known to ask applicants about their career goals. These could be short-term goals or long-term goals. And generally, these goals are to be linked with one’s professional background or experience.

The following is the Stage-2 Essay Question for YLP 2024:

In this essay prompt, ISB has given an interesting twist to the standard career goal question by asking candidates to relate their future plans with their past aspirations. This is interesting in that, while growing up, our aspirations are driven more by what we fancy doing than by what we may be skilled at. When asked by your parents what you wanted to do when you grew up, you probably picked professions such as pilot, doctor, policeman, scientist, or even cricketer or footballer. If you are writing your YLP Stage-2 essay, chances are high that you have pursued none of these streams.

  • Why is ISB interested in your childhood dreams then?
  • How does it matter if your dreams have translated to practical career plans or have evolved with time?
  • How important is it to have it all chalked out into the future?

Getting answers to these questions will allow you to present a coherent and a thorough career story.

The essay prompt has 3 parts – all interlinked, but each part is nuanced in its own way. Let’s dive deeper into each part and understand what you can write in your essay.

1. What is the ideal career which you always wanted to pursue?

To begin with, it’s completely justified to have fancied flying planes or becoming a scientist, but what’s interesting is that there are certain inherent passions and traits that drive our aspirations.

“ You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward…” Steve Jobs

This is your time to connect the dots looking backward. While you may not have pursued what you “always” wanted to pursue, talk about your core inclinations and qualities. Back them up with examples that present how you demonstrated these qualities. These stories can be used as the build-up to your future plans.

2. Do you still want to pursue the same or has it changed?

Honestly, as a college student, you aren’t expected to have complete clarity on your future plans, but “no clarity” isn’t a good idea either! Having pursued a degree program, and studied certain subjects, it is time you start assessing the feasibility of your childhood dreams.

  • Can you define them better?
  • Can you start thinking of industries or functions that you would like to work in?
  • Elaborate why and how you narrowed down your choices. Did you talk to industry professionals?
  • Was it influenced by an internship that you took up?
  • Are there any college projects that you would like to relate your plans with?

Logically present your career plans, without being too particular about them.

“ You are still in college and are yet to gain good exposure as you enter the corporate world. It’s completely alright, therefore, to also present a Plan B or “similar” options that you would be open to exploring. “ A.M.Kannan, Senior Mentor – ISBmantra, Former ISB Admissions Director

3. How do you plan to make your ideal career a reality?

Spoiler Alert: This is the least important of the three-part question.

As long as you have a plan, it’s acceptable to experiment, make mistakes, pick your lessons, and make amends to progress on your career path. Not having a plan is not acceptable! You cannot want to work with Google, not know how to get there, and just hope that ISB does some magic to get you your dream job. On the contrary, you have two important years to shape your career, even before you join ISB. You will, therefore, need to have a plan for the two years before ISB and at least two years after ISB.

  • What kind of roles do you expect to take up now?
  • What kind of roles would you like to take up after ISB?
  • How will ISB equip you to move from role-1 to role-2?

Answering these questions will convince the reader about your clarity of goals – even if they are expected to evolve with time. Do not end up writing a short fiction on your future plans. Nor is ISB looking to read a list of the best courses and professors that the program offers. Talk about what you want to do and what components of the ISB program will remain specifically relevant to your goals.

How to get into ISB YLP: Application essays, success story, fees, acceptance rate, placements

How to get into ISB YLP

Assuming you aren’t familiar with either of the two 3-letter acronyms, we’ll start with the basics. The full form of ISB YLP is ‘Indian School of Business Young Leaders Programme’. Quite a mouthful? Let’s break it down.

ISB YLP is the deferred MBA option for the Post Graduate Programme – the bschool’s flagship program equivalent to an MBA.

How to get into ISB YLP

Eligibility.

You need to be in your final or pre-final year in any undergraduate or postgraduate degree to apply. A successful admission would get you a guaranteed seat to ISB PGP when you’re still a college student.

ISB YLP Acceptance Rate

While ISB does not specifically mention the percentage, from anecdotal evidence one can assume that the acceptance rate for ISB YLP is in the 20% to 25% range.

But statistics such as the selectivity rate (even if authentic and accurate) don’t paint the full picture – since what applies to others may not apply to you.

The only aspect in your control is to understand the YLP application process and submit the best possible application. More on that later.

Application Process

There are 3 stages to complete. Here’s what you need to do in each stage and the deadline.

But there’s a lot of ground to be covered, so don’t wait till the last few weeks. We’d recommend you to get started several months before the YLP deadlines, to ensure you aren’t submitting a sub-optimal application.

How the ISB YLP process works

Once you get an admit, you’ll need to do two things:

  • Gain at least 20 months of work experience before you can join the PGP class.
  • Attend all the compulsory on-campus learning weekends. This would also help you interact with faculty, current PGP students and become familiar with the campus.

Application Fees

We’re not sure why the official site doesn’t mention this. But for anyone who’s curious – the application fee for ISB YLP is ₹3,000.

That’s lower than the application fee for their PGP (₹5,000 to ₹7,500 depending on the admissions round). Considering the target audience for YLP (students who aren’t earning yet), they may have decided to lower the entry barrier to encourage more applications.

Placements at ISB YLP

Many ask us about the placements and average package at ISB YLP. Recruitment happens at PGP, not after a YLP admit. YLP is just a stepping stone to the main program that attracts the top recruiters across industries ranging from consulting to finance, and everything in between.

For placement and compensation details, read this: ISB Placement Success Stories and Salary Statistics

Let’s move on to hear from Samdeesh Mahajan, who cracked the ISB YLP admissions process.

How I got into ISB YLP

By samdeesh mahajan.

I am a pathetic writer.

I fall short of words every time I try to pen down my thoughts. Hence, articulating my thoughts into essays (and even this de-brief) was not only a mammoth task but also a confusing challenge.

Hi everyone. My name is Samdeesh Mahajan. I graduated from KMC, Delhi University in 2021 having done my bachelors in Physics. I scored a 750 on my GMAT and was recently offered a place in the ISB YLP (Co’24). Here’s my story.

I have always been a practical, hands-on learning person. The type of person who would mount a table fan on top of his father’s car to see if a rotating fan can light up a bulb connected through a dynamo when he got to know about A.C. generators in his class 10th science textbook.

This pragmatic nature, coupled with the business case studies that my father (a businessman) brought to the dinner table every day, shaped my business acumen at a very young age.

Since I was highly interested in Physics, I chose a B.Sc. (H) degree at Delhi University over the coveted B.Tech. degrees at DTU, NSUT and other prestigious NITs and IIITs.

Apart from my aversion to engineering, another secret and subtle reason for this choice was that I understood how business schools value diversity.

Since I knew I had to eventually get into a business school to hone my business skills, I made a conscious decision not to be part of an over-represented category of applicants.

This still remains a very questionable decision to all my peers, but I went ahead with my gut. Saved me a year and a ton of money! :p

Ever since school, I was very actively involved in extra-curricular activities. I am a Hindustani classically trained vocalist, an avid debater and an amateur theatre enthusiast.

I started preparing for the GMAT in April 2020. I took GMAT prep services from Jamboree. My fundamentals in quant were already solid, but cracking verbal was a challenge.

I went through a repertoire of questions from OG, Advanced guide, Manhattan prep series and Veritas prep series, consistently solving 30+ questions a day for about 2 months.

Once I was convinced of my basics, I started writing mock exams on the Jamboree portal and eventually took the Manhattan and Veritas test series. Once I aced them with a 750+, I booked my slot for the GMAT.

On the day of my GMAT, I developed a mild fever. I ended up scoring 730. This was not my best.

This could not be the score I submitted to international business schools, especially with a lack of big names on my resume. Against my peers’ recommendation, I decided to re-write the exam.

I ordered a detailed report from GMAC to analyse what went wrong in the first attempt. Upon reviewing with my mentors, CR turned out to be the chink in my armour. I revisited my concepts and focused only on CR for a couple of weeks.

But as fate would have it, I developed COVID 3 days before my second attempt. The deadline for my first application was just a month away now. I needed to take the exam as soon as I could.

I took the exam just 7 days after testing negative for COVID. I remember taking paracetamol during the break given between the exam. I managed to score a 750.

Application experience

I was quite confused at the beginning of the application process. No one in my close friends or family had applied to international business schools. I started researching the basic application process and eligibility criteria.

I was suddenly bombarded with a mountain of questions –

  • Will a three-year degree be acceptable at business schools?
  • How will I be able to afford an MBA?
  • Is getting an MiM a better option at the beginning of my career, followed by an MBA later?
  • Does my profile stand any chance with applicants having IIT and McKinsey on their resumes?
  • And most importantly – Is getting an MBA coherent with my long term goal of setting up my own venture?

I knew I needed help. So I started hunting for the best consultant for ISB YLP.

Best consultant for ISB YLP

There are many consultants who focus on ISB YLP. But how does one decide which one’s the best ?

Word of mouth referral from a trustworthy source can help here.

One of my acquaintances referred to Mr Shantanu Joshi from MBA Crystal Ball . Shantanu fitted my expectations just right.

In our first call, we had an elaborate discussion on my motivations to pursue an MBA. We brainstormed on the multiple possible career paths that I could carve with or without an MBA.

He asked me those right questions, which at the moment I had no answers to, but were essential in shaping up my MBA applications.

Why international business schools? Why not give CAT and get into IIMs?

Here’s the thing. I want to pursue a career in renewable energy. I’m fascinated by the process of generating energy and the impact it has on human civilization.

This, coupled with such magical theories as each building being a micro-grid generating enough electricity to power itself by Professor Jeremy Rifkin in his book “The Third Industrial Revolution” cemented my interest in working to provide equitable access to distributed renewable energy.

Now, renewable energy, and especially solar energy, is a particular nascent industry. There is a huge scope of learning from our European counterparts who have cracked strategies to execute this vision.

Hence, understanding successful policies and business approaches at European or American energy companies made a lot of sense.

At first, I tried my chances at international business schools. I understood that I had very slim chances. But I saw this as my first shot at my dream school, without having to pay the application fees (deferred MBA applications are generally free of cost).

For international schools, I decided to work with an international consultant, given that they had adcom members of my dream school in their strategy team.

Yet another questionable decision of my life – I jumped into getting expensive consulting based on the assumption that adcom members will help me draft a winning application without checking my compatibility with the mentors.

I applied to 8 international schools – HBS, Kellogg, Columbia, Booth, Darden, IESE, MIT Sloan and Yale.

Each application was a long, tiresome process of:

  • Going through the school’s website with a fine-tooth comb.
  • Figuring out what excites me about this particular school (clubs, special networks, alum network, curriculum, professors etc).
  • Connecting with the school alums and current students through LinkedIn or e-mail.
  • Scheduling meetings with them to understand particular resources at each school which will be beneficial in my career path.

But more than that, I wanted to understand the culture and environment of each school. I was more excited to know about the Tech Treks that Darden students organize, or the dance battles by the Hudson river organised by Columbia Business School students during their orientation week.

To my surprise, I got interview calls from Columbia, Booth and Darden. But after being waitlisted by Darden for 2 months, I was finally rejected at all 8 schools. (rejected by 4 schools on the same day!)

In retrospect, I believe there were two major reasons why my application didn’t make the cut.

Firstly, I had not done enough in the field of renewable energy at the time of my applications, hence I could not show my interest in the field that I was passionate about through my work experience.

Secondly, I fell prey to following a template in my interviews. I had answers prepared to – Why MBA? Why Columbia? What are your short term and long term goals?

Though these answers were not mechanical and were mostly conversational, I believe that pre-written answers limited the scope of opening up casual conversations with my interviewer.

The second round for ISB was in August. This gave me a much-required breather for 3-4 months.

I started working with a clean-tech startup where I learned a lot about the Indian Renewable Energy industry and the specific challenges that it faces based on the demographics, consumer behaviour and government policies.

Within 2 months, my co-founders started giving me leadership positions in the company, where I had to lead a team of 4 interns.

I doubled my company’s ARR within 2 months (it was not a lot, to begin with) and played a pivotal role in finding the product-market fit.

Tackling the ISB YLP essay and interview

I once again reached out to Shantanu from MBA Crystal Ball for his help with my ISB YLP essay.

I loved the way he refined my essay and helped me put a better structure to my writing. By answering the right prompts asked by Shantanu, I sailed through the second round of the admission process.

Now, during my ISB interview in February, I had a lot to talk about the Indian Solar Industry. Having led my company’s Business Development team for about 4 months, I had reasonable insights into team management and leadership qualities.

My interview revolved mainly around pitching the bright future of renewables in India to my interviewers and how my company would play an important role in this. The casual conversation ended with some humbling feedback from the interviewers.

A couple of months later, I was offered a place in the Young Leaders Programme at ISB.

What worked for me?

  • Having a clear, well-defined problem statement that I want to solve in my career. I am passionate about renewable energy and cleantech. I believe an energy revolution with renewables and smart grids will change the way we think about electricity. And I’m willing to put in the effort of building something that will facilitate this revolution. Show, don’t tell.
  • Research about the school – not only from the school’s website but also from its students and alums. I spoke with 30+ alums from 8 schools before I put in my applications. There are a lot of things I discovered during these conversations about the schools which made me feel that the school fits right with my expectations
  • Having an unconventional profile – A Physics honours undergrad, a Hindustani-classically trained vocalist and a theatre enthusiast, who is extremely passionate about Renewable energy (and not MBB!).
  • Shantanu Joshi and MBA Crystal Ball 🙂
